Twnety nine passengers on board a bus in Saudi Arabia have been burnt to death.

The bus, which earlier departed from the main bus terminal in Aziziyah, was clipped by a truck as it was passing the bus about 8:30 on Friday night. The bus caught fire and the electric locks jammed, trapping all 29 passengers on board.

Frantic efforts to release the passengers failed and all were incinerated. Fifteen fire engines attended the scene along with dozens of ambulances and scores of highway patrol police officers. However there was nothing anyone could do, the damage was done - all in a matter of minutes.

The driver of the bus and the truck both survived.

Twenty one bodies were recovered from the burnt out bus. Police said they believed the others passengers remains had been reduced to ashes. Most on board were Saudi nationals however the bus company said the passenger list revealed there were five Sri Lankans, three Indians, one Pakistani, one Egyptian, one Bangladeshi and two Sudanese nationals among the others.

The accident occurred about 30 kilometres from the capital Riyadh.
