AC Milan 0-1 Inter: Samuel header secures derby spoils for 10-man Nerazzurri

    217040hp2.jpg

A frantic Derby della Madonnina was settled by Walter Samuel, who scored the only goal of the game as Inter defeated AC Milan 1-0 at San Siro. The Argentine headed home from Esteban Cambiasso's cross with one of the first attacks of the match, and Andrea Stramaccioni's charges shrugged off the expulsion of Yuto Nagatomo to keep their rivals at bay and take all three points.

Needing a victory to move within four points of Serie A leader Juventus, Inter could not have asked for a better start. Barely four minutes were on the clock when Esteban Cambiasso's free kick eluded Christian Abbiati, who had come out rashly. Walter Samuel was waiting at the far post, and did very well from an acute angle to steer the ball into the open net and put his team into the lead. Compatriot Diego Milito could have doubled the advantage moments later, but failed to capitalize on Abbiati's poor clearance and was denied twice by the goalkeeper.

Struggling to create openings with Bojan as a solitary forward, Milan looked most likely to create something from distance. Riccardo Montolivo sent Samir Handanovic sprawling with a venomous long-range effort, but the midfielder sent his shot inches wide of the post. Kevin Prince Boateng also had the chance when the visiting side was robbed in defense, but the Ghanaian failed to hit the target to squander a great opportunity for Milan.

As the first half was coming to a close, the Rossoneri thought they had drawn level. Handanovic's punch landed squarely at the feet of Montolivo, who this time powered the ball into the net. Celebrations were short-lived, however, as play was brought back for a marginal foul on the goalkeeper after clearing the ball. Bojan was also denied by the shot-stopper in the period's closing stages, meaning that Inter went into the break with a slender lead.

Inter's task was made more difficult just after the restart when Yuto Nagatomo was sent off, reducing the away team to 10 men. The Japan international had been booked in the first half and, although his handball in the middle of the pitch seemed innocuous enough, referee Valeri had no hesitation in showing the Inter man his second yellow to the disgust of coach Andrea Stramaccioni.

Massimiliano Allegri brought both Ignazio Abate and Robinho into the action to try and take advantage of the numerical superiority, but despite enjoying extended periods of possession Milan had few clear-cut openings to force its way back into proceedings. A couple of chances by Montolivo from distance failed to test Handanovic, while Bojan also fired wide. Another Montolivo thunderbolt then forced Handanovic to parry, and Boateng spurned his chance on the volley when he had time to control the ball in the area.

Bojan was the next man to fluff his lines when Montolivo presented the opening. The former Barcelona man was onside when the midfielder once more blasted the ball from deep, but having collected the rebound he slipped at the last moment and allowed Handanovic to recover and end the danger. Inter once more on edge 15 minutes from the end when Robinho's well-placed cross looked destined to end at the feet of Giampaolo Pazzini. The striker threw himself at the ball, but at full stretch failed to connect and the Nerazzuri started again with a goal kick.

Milan threw everything forward in the last moments, but Inter held firm and, thanks to the flawless keeping of Handanovic, was left to celebrate victory in the Derby. The win moves the club onto 15 points from its opening seven games, level in third with Lazio. Milan, meanwhile, remains mired in mid-table obscurity having been condemned to its fourth defeat in seven.

Massimiliano Allegri blasts referee after derby loss to Inter

    216978hp2.jpg

AC Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri has criticized referee Paolo Valeri, blaming him for his team's defeat to Inter on Sunday night in Serie A.

The Rossoneri conceded early in the first half and despite playing with a man advantage for the best part of the second, following Yuto Nagatomo's red card, they could not find an equalizer.
Allegri has put much of the blame for his side's fourth loss of the season on the shoulders of Valeri, who he believes made many mistakes on incidents that were "really obvious."

"I never talk about referees. But, I have to now. The referee got it wrong in this game," Allegri was quoted by Corriere della Sera.

"In the first half he made a technical error. He blew the whistle for halftime 12 seconds early. Then there was a last-man foul on [Urby] Emanuelson which was given against him.

"There was maybe a penalty on Robinho, the Nagatomo red card was obvious as he couldn’t not give him another yellow for that.

"This is not an excuse and perhaps today the referee was unlucky, but the incidents were really obvious."

The former Cagliari tactician expressed his disbelief as to how Riccardo Montolivo's goal was disallowed for an apparent foul on Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

He added: “I have no idea what the referee whistled for on the Montolivo goal. Let’s just say he was unlucky on the decisive incidents, as the goal would’ve been crucial. There was also a penalty and [Walter] Samuel was last man too. “It’s not as if the referee did us a favor with Nagatomo’s red card, as he obviously stuck his arm out for an intentional handling offense.

“It’s a shame we are running into some decisions that go against us, but we can’t do anything about that. Maybe the referees are on as bad form as we are."Despite his tirade at the match official, Allegri did admit that his side needs to improve in certain areas, especially in defending set-pieces.

“We have to look at the performance and improve some things. It’s a shame to lose this way, but we have to accept the result and look at where we got it wrong. At the moment we have conceded seven goals from set plays and that should be avoided. We’ll work on it over the break," he said.

The loss now sees Milan sit in 11th place with only seven points from seven games played.

Everything still to play for, insists Barcelona's Messi

Lionel Messi insists all is still to play for after Barcelona draw 2-2 with Real Madrid at the Camp Nou on Sunday night.

The Catalans remain eight points clear of their closest rivals and it was Messi who scored both Barcelona goals while Cristiano Ronaldo also helped himself to a double for Madrid.

The Barca forward believes a draw was a fair result in what was an exhilarating Clasico but the match will have no bearing on the final league standings come the end of the season.

“It was a beautiful game, we could have won, and they also could have won,” said Messi.“We seek to win but it's not easy. We played against Madrid and we knew it would be very complicated. We were close to ending [only] five points above.“We went to look for the result but we knew we had in front a very good Real Madrid team, with very good players. We're still eight points clear but we know that there is still much to play for.”

The Argentina international was however, reluctant to speak on either his or Ronaldo’s personal performance.

He added: “I'm not speaking individually, no one is special. These games motivate everyone to play, not only Cristiano Ronaldo and me."Ronaldo became the first player to score in six consecutive Clasico’s when he opened the scoring after 23 minutes.

Messi evened things up eight minutes later before curling a superb free-kick beyond Madrid keeper Iker Casillas just after the hour mark with Ronaldo equalizing for Jose Mourinho’s side five minutes later.

Barcelona travels to Deportivo on Oct. 20.

A statement on Barcelona’s official website said:“Dani Alves will be out of action for three weeks. The Brazilian picked up a hamstring injury in his left leg in the match against Real Madrid. Martín Montoya came on in his stead on the 27th minute.”

Ronaldo sprains his shoulder in draw at Barcelona

    217018hp2.jpg

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo may be set for time on the sidelines after spraining his shoulder in his side's 2-2 draw with Barcelona on Sunday night.

The former Manchester United man was in fine form bagging a double to ensure his team did not leave the Camp Nou empty-handed. But the night ended in disappointment for the 27-year-old after picking up an injury.

Early in the second half, Ronaldo fell to the ground and was visibly left in pain but the Portuguese star did finish the match though tests after the game revealed the injury.

The extent of the damage to his shoulder is not yet known with further scans expected.

The Portugal captain may now miss his national team's upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Russia and Northern Ireland on Oct. 12 and 16, respectively.

Atletico chairman Cerezo 'calm’ over Falcao transfer talk as Mancini watches Colombian score against Malaga

    217068hp2.jpg

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini may have been in attendance as Falcao scored in Atletico Madrid's victory over Malaga on Sunday, but Atleti's chairman insists there is nothing to worry about regarding his prized asset moving away.

The striker, who has been linked with a possible January switch to the Premier League champion or Chelsea, scored after just six minutes, heading in an Emre cross as his side moved level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

The Colombian has recently indicated his desire to one day play in England, but Atletico chairman Enrique Cerezo is not worried about the future of the prolific 26-year-old, despite being aware of Mancini's presence in Madrid.

"We know that Mancini has come to watch the game but we are calm with the topic of Falcao," Cerezo told Cadena Ser.

"I guess Mancini came here to search for a home in Malaga," he also later joked to Canal+.

Falcao has already scored 11 goals this season, including a breathtaking hat trick against Chelsea in a 4-1 European Super Cup win.

The goals have continued to flood in for the former Porto man, who struck 36 times in all competitions for Atletico during the 2011-12 campaign, his first season with the Spanish side.

Ozil: I have nothing to prove

    209873hp2.jpg

Real Madrid playmaker Mesut Ozil feels he has nothing to prove in the wake of recent criticism in the Spanish papers.

The Germany international impressed against Barcelona on Sunday after a number of relatively disappointing outings earlier this season, but Ozil has insisted that his performance against the Catalans had nothing to do with the negative words in the press.

"I don't need criticism to improve my performances. I don't play football to try and prove someone wrong. I have nothing to prove. I play football because I like doing so," Ozil stated to Bild. "Thecriticism was undeserved. I have to get used to it, though. The choice of words from Spanish journalists tends to be a bit harsh."

The Germany international also briefly discussed the alleged interest of Manchester United, and stressed he has no interest in leaving Real Madrid.

"I don't know anything about that [Manchester United's interest]. There is absolutely no reason for me to leave Real Madrid."

Ozil has a contract with Madrid until June 2016.

Casillas: I would pick Cristiano Ronaldo over Messi

    215793hp2.jpg

Casillas has made it clear that he would pick Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo over Barcelona attacker Lionel Messi if he had to make a choice between the duo.

Jose Mourinho stated after this weekend's 2-2 Clasico draw that people shouldn't compare the two as they're both from another planet, but Casillas has insisted that he prefers the Portugal star over the Argentine forward.

"I'd choose Cristiano over Messi because he's a player who gives us so much every season and he's a player I spend time with every day," Casillas told Cadena Cope. "I know him, know who he is, know how he trains, know what he wants and where he wants to get to."

The shot-stopper also had his say on the difficult relationship between Sergio Ramos and Jose Mourinho, but refused to side with either of the two parties.

"Whose side was I on? On Sergio's, supporting a teammate who was going through a hard time. And the boss' because he's looking out for the team," he explained. "It's not a question of siding with Sergio or the boss but supporting everyone equally."

Ramos was benched for the Champions League win over Manchester City, but has since returned to the Madrid starting XI again.

Rivaldo: Neymar must leave Brazil for Europe

    117862hp2.jpg

Former Barcelona star Rivaldo has urged Brazil international Neymar to leave his native country for Europe in the not too distant future, to gain valuable experience ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

The Santos attacker has been linked with clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United and Juventus in the past few months, but a transfer seems to be far away at this point as Neymar is ready to stay at his current club for now.

"We all need some changes every now and then. Neymar must leave Brazil and his familiar surroundings. He should come to Europe in order to gain experience," Rivaldo was quoted as saying by Terra.

He continued to explain,"We were already talking about the same matter in relation to players like Ganso and Lucas a year ago. They will be there for the World Cup and need to move as well.

Ganso recently left Santos for Sao Paulo, while Lucas will make the move from Sao Paulo to Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window.

"You need experience at the World Cup and the best way to gain experience is to play against the best, which is the case in Europe," Rivaldo said. "These players have to make the move to Europe as soon as possible."

Neymar, however, has so far stressed that he intends to stay at Santos until after the 2014 World Cup.

Capello finding life tough in Russia

    181233hp2.jpg

Russia boss Capello has admitted that he's finding it difficult to adapt to his new surroundings, but is determined to overcome any obstacles as he tries to guide the national team to World Cup 2014.

The former England coach replaced Dick Advocaat at the helm after a disappointing Euro 2012 campaign, but he has so far struggled to settle.

"Everything is written in Cyrillic, and it's difficult to read and to learn the Cyrillic alphabet," Capello stated to UEFA.com. "I always need a translator, and it makes it a bit more difficult to say what I want to say. Sometimes the right expression, the right word, helps you a lot. So I would say it's really difficult.

He added, "But as with all difficult challenges, I like to take them on.

"I have just arrived and I am living in a hotel. Moscow is a beautiful city. Russia is a nation full of development. You see many nice things. For example all the stadiums are built for the World Cup, the infrastructure, so it's really a nation worth living in."

Russia is currently preparing for the World Cup 2014 qualifiers against Portugal and Azerbaijan.

Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone targeted by Napoli

    217353hp2.jpg

Napoli has identified Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/italy/16100/vito-mannone as a possible long-term replacement for veteran Morgan De Sanctis and is willing to pay around 5 million euros for his services next summer, Goal.com has learned.

The Italian has been propelled into the Gunners' first team this season following injuries to both Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski, and received plaudits for his displays against Manchester City and Liverpool in recent weeks.

After first-choice target Mattia Perin opted to join Pescara on loan from parent club Genoa, Napoli has now pinpointed Mannone as a potential signing.

Mannone's current contract expires in 2014, and confirmed on Saturday that no talk of an extension has currently been broached.

“Neither myself nor anyone from my family or friends have spoken about any deal,” he said. “At the moment I am really happy and just focusing on training and playing well. I am trying to be the No.1 for this club and win trophies. That is my only concern and I would like to make that clear."

Inter is also thought to be showing an interest in the 24-year-old, who Wenger recently confirmed had been available for purchase during the summer - though no club submitted a concrete bid.

"When I sent Mannone to Hull, I watched him every single game and all the reports I had were very positive. I was quite surprised no club went for him because I would have let him go," the Arsenal boss told reporters.

Falcao: I enjoy fight for Pichichi title with Messi and Ronaldo

    217068hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao is pleased to have scored as many goals in La Liga as Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo at this point, and is hopeful of being able to keep up with the duo for the remainder of the season.

The Colombia international netted once in Sunday's 2-1 win over Malaga to take his league tally for the 2012-13 campaign to eight, and Falcao is relishing the prospect of challenging Messi and Ronaldo for the Pichichi title.

"Everything's still very close, but I am enjoying fighting with them for the top-scorer title," Falcao was quoted as saying by El Tiempo.

"I'm already proud to have been ahead of them at some point this season. Hopefully I can keep this up and continue challenging them. I want to replicate last year's goalscoring numbers."

Meanwhile, former Barca and Madrid midfielder Bernd Schuster has voiced his opinion that Falcao is at the same level as Messi and Ronaldo following his impressive performances in recent months.

"Right now the Colombian is like Messi and Cristiano. They're from another planet," the German told Marca.

Phil Jones targets Manchester United return for Chelsea clash

    172643hp2.jpg

Phil Jones is set to return to training during the international break and hopes to be fit for Manchester United’s away clash against Chelsea on Sept. 28.

The defender is yet to play this season having undergone surgery in September on a cartilage tear in his knee.

Jones, 20, is on course to return in line with the eight-week lay-off anticipated by United when he went under the knife and has been running at the club’s Carrington training ground for the last two weeks as he strengthens his knee.

"Phil has been working hard, he's slightly ahead of schedule and is looking at the Chelsea game at the end of the month for his return," a United source told Goal.com.

United kept just its third clean sheet of the season in the 3-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday amid a number of injury problems.

However, with Chris Smalling closing in on a return and Jones also making good progress, Sir Alex Ferguson is set to receive a huge boost in the next few weeks.

Jones, who can play at center back, right back or central midfield, made 41 appearances for United last season and has been a success at Old Trafford since arriving from Blackburn for 20 million euros in June 2011.

Ashley Cole available for England selection after apologizing to FA chairman for Twitter rant

    192510hp2.jpg

Ashley Cole will be available to play for England against San Marino on Friday evening after apologizing to FA chairman David Bernstein for his foul-mouthed Twitter rant.

The Chelsea left back took to the social networking website on Friday after governing body's called his reliability into question when supplying evidence on behalf of John Terry in a recent independent regulatory commission's hearing into the alleged racial abuse towards Anton Ferdinand.

Cole wrote on his Twitter account: "Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFT****."

Cole, who later deleted the tweet and apologized "unreservedly" in an official statement, has been included in the Three Lions squad to face San Marino and Poland in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and remains a part of Roy Hodgson's group for the two fixtures.

And Bernstein, talking on BBC Radio 5 Live, confirmed that Cole has personally apologized to him on Monday night and is now "free to play for England" again, with only Roy Hodgson able to decide against his selection.

He said: "He apologized immediately on Friday and he came to see me last night and apologized to me personally," said Bernstein.

"He showed real contrition. He said he was really sorry."He is free to play for England over the coming matches. It is up to the manager to decide whether he plays or not."

Kaka delighted to make 'fresh start' with Real Madrid and Brazil'

    214105hp2.jpg

Kaka has revealed he is delighted at being handed a clean slate by both Real Madrid and Brazil, as he looks to re-establish himself on the world stage.

The 2007 Ballon d'Or winner had been consigned to the fringes of the Blancos first team after failing to secure a transfer away from the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer, while his international prospects also seemed bleak.

However, he was called up by the Seleccao for the first time in two years for the upcoming friendlies against Iraq and Japan and made his long-awaited return for his club side against Ajax in the Champions League last Wednesday.

"It's a fresh start and I'm pleased to be back," he said. "I feel good physically and technically.

"I've been injury-free for almost a year now and I'm training well and getting more chances in the first team at Real Madrid."

As Kaka prepares to make his Brazil debut under Mano Menezes, he admitted the squad has changed much from that of its predecessor, but is determined to stay grounded about his country's chances of success at World Cup 2014.

"I don't know many of the players personally; Neymar, for example," he added. "It's different now than when I played for the first time when some of my idols were still playing.

"You can't get carried away, I'm not even thinking about the World Cup right now."

Roma legend Totti plays down retirement speculation

    213935hp2.jpg

Roma forward Totti has played down suggestions that he is winding down his playing days, saying he is happy to take each match as it comes.

The former Italy international has spent the entirety of his career with the Giallorossi, racking up more than 500 appearances for the club since 1992 and becoming its all-time top goalscorer in the process. He seemed to have dispelled fears he was close to retirement after penning a new five-year contract in 2009, but has only two years remaining on his deal. Even so, Totti is refusing to look too far ahead into the future.

"For me, it's just football," he told TV Sorrisi e Canzoni. "I always think about the next game. Maybe when I retire, I will figure something out to warmly greet everyone for their support, but now it is too early to think about it."

Totti then recollected on his nickname 'Il Gladiatore' and the time he met Pope John Paul II.

"It's true, I have been called Gladiator in Rome, but I think our courage is not linked to our roles or fame," Totti said. "Rather, we work for the things we believe in and do our best for ourselves and our loved ones everyday. The most real and intense encounter of my life? Meeting Pope John Paul II. I cannot forget his gentle eyes and the feeling of peace that he seemed to exert."

Manchester United star Van Persie faces no FA action over Cabaye elbow incident

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie will not receive any retrospective FA punishment for allegedly elbowing Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye at the weekend.

Magpies boss Alan Pardew criticized the Dutch forward after the game in an incident he described as 'unsavory', hinting that past clashes between the pair may have led to Van Persie deliberately attempting to foul the Frenchman.

Nevertheless, Newcastle looks to have been dealt a reprieve of its own with combative midfielder Cheikh Tiote caught stamping on Manchester United's Tom Cleverley in the same fixture, and no charge has been brought against him either.

It would seem as if Stoke central defender Robert Huth will also escape further action after appearing to stamp on Liverpool striker Luis Suarez during the 0-0 draw at Anfield.

The club's manager Tony Pulis was vocal after the game about the Uruguayan's penchant for going down easily under minimal contact, but his team's physical approach saw it finish the game with six yellow cards.

Mancini plays down presence at Atletico Madrid match as Falcao scores double

    214364hp2.jpg

Manchester City coach Roberto Mancini watched Atletico Madrid run out 2-1 winners over Malaga on Sunday, but has insisted that he was not scouting Radamel Falcao.

Speculation in Spain was rife when Mancini appeared at the match, with the local media claiming that he was at Vicente Calderon to keep tabs on the Colombian and Malaga stars Isco and Eliseu. Falcao, who has also been linked with Chelsea, has enjoyed a blistering start to the campaign, hitting 12 goals in just seven games so far. Mancini has claimed that he was in Spain to watch his son, Andrea, though.

"I am here to see my son who played in Valladolid," he told reporters.

Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo, also played down Mancini’s presence at the match, while insisting that his side is not panicked over the interest its star player is garnering.

"We know that Mancini has come to watch, but we are calm on the subject of Falcao," Cerezo told reporters before joking, "I suppose Mancini is here to look for a house in Malaga."
