Chelsea 0-2 Swansea: Michu and Graham shine as Blues fans turn on Torres

Chelsea slumped to defeat in the first leg of its Capital One Cup semifinal as goals by Michu and Danny Graham were enough for Swansea to claim victory at Stamford Bridge.

Rafael Benitez selected a strong side for the tie, although opted to rotate his attacking options with Fernando Torres replacing Demba Ba and Oscar returning to the starting lineup.Swansea, meanwhile, made five changes, most notably Michu coming in with Danny Graham on the bench.

The hosts dominated the early exchanges and took just 10 minutes to carve out a great chace. A flowing move saw David Luiz and Eden Hazard combine beautifully to release Ramires into the area. The Brazilian took his time, but could only poke his shot tamely goalwards with an effort that did not trouble Gerhard Tremmel.

The goalkeeper was called into action again soon after, however. More slick approach work from the Blues saw Hazard again surging forwards before freeing Mata, but the Spain international’s side-footed shot lacked power and flew straight at Tremmel.

Minutes later and Mata was at it again, a clever backheel by Oscar left the Spaniard clean through on goal but he could only drag his shot wide when well placed.Yet Chelsea was made to rue its missed chances when Swansea took the lead seven minutes before the break.

A simple pass by goalkeeper Turnbull was not controlled by Ivanovic on the edge of the area, allowing De Guzman to chase the defender down. However, the loose ball instead broke to Michu, who took a touch before bending it superbly past the goalkeeper to open the scoring with a sublime finish.

The Blues were stunned but Ivanovic almost made amends just minutes before the break. The Serbian cut inside from the left before fizzing a shot goalwards which a diving Tremmel managed to push around the post. The chances continued to come for Chelsea after the break with David Luiz wasting two free kicks before slamming a fierce shot straight at Tremmel, just shy of the hour mark.

With time running out, Benitez sent on Frank Lampard for Ramires, much to the delight of the home fans. However, the midfielder will have been relieved to see the assistant referee's flag deny Michu a second, for offside, shortly after his arrival.
New signing Demba Ba was the next to arrive, for a home debut, with 10 minutes to go in place of Torres and the former Newcastle man had two great chances within minutes of his arrival but could not find the back of the net, heading straight at Tremmel before heading another chance over.

His night then proceeded to get even worse as after being sent clean through on goal, he tangled with Tremmel, and with the crowd howling for a penalty, inside found himself booked for diving.

Again, the misses were to prove costly as Swansea doubled its lead in stoppage time, again through a defensive mistake by Chelsea. For the second time in the match, Ivanovic was to blame. The defender's poor back-pass to Turnbull was pounced on by substitute Graham who rounded the keeper before calmly slotting home.

Yet there was still time for more drama, with just seconds left on the clock, Ba smashed the ball home, after good work by Lampard, only to be denied by the offside flag, to leave the Blues with a huge challenge ahead of them.

Barcelona 5-0 Cordoba (Agg 7-0): Doubles from Villa and Alexis help holders stroll into quarterfinals

    245600hp2.jpg

Barcelona romped into the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey with an effortless 5-0 victory over Cordoba at Camp Nou on Thursday.

The Blaugrana were simply too good for their Segunda Division opponents, and progress by a 7-0 aggregate scoreline, setting up a date against Malaga in the last eight.

Thiago Alcantara opened the scoring 17 minutes in, before a pair of strikes of the highest quality from David Villa put the dominant hosts out of sight by halftime.

Alexis Sanchez would add two further goals in the second half, and Barca played out the rest of the match in complete control - without ever needing to call on the watching Lionel Messi from the bench.

Stand-in coach Jordi Roura looked to rest a few of his first-team regulars, with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba joining Messi on the bench, as Villa was handed a start in attack.

Cordoba keeper Mikel Saizar could do nothing to stop Thiago in the 17th minute, as the midfielder was released by a deft touch from Alex Song, and bent a fine finish into the back of the net.

It should have been 2-0 within moments when Sanchez broke clear and attempted to lob Saizar, but the keeper stood his ground and was able to smother the effort.
But the second goal was always on the cards, and it arrived via a moment of brilliance from Villa. The striker collected the ball on the byline, slipped past two challenges effortlessly, and chipped his finish home.

The dust had barely settled before Villa struck again. Sergi Roberto’s nifty touch teed up the Spain international on the edge of the area, and his shot was drilled in low via the post.

Thiago had a chance to make it 4-0 shortly after the half hour mark, but after taking aim superbly just outside the box, he was unlucky to see his shot ricochet off the woodwork.

Sanchez had another chance to score seven minutes into the second half, but after rounding Saizer, he could not find the target with his finish. But the Chilean would come good almost instantly, rising highest to nod home Thiago’s corner from six yards out.

Vila then spurned a glorious chance to seal his hat trick when he fired harmlessly over the bar from an unmarked position yards from goal, with Sanchez doing well to set up the chance. It took Cordoba 66 minutes to register its first real chance, as substitute Pedro forced Jose Pinto into a close-range parry after breaking free down the right.

Jonathan Dos Santos fired just wide from just outside the box, before Thiago came close again with a dipping shot that bouced onto the roof of the net.

With only minutes left, Sanchez bundled home a rebound after Tello's shot was saved, to put the finishing touches on an enjoyable night for the hosts at Camp Nou.

Aston Villa has made an approach for Inter starlet Coutinho, says agent

    215993hp2.jpg

Aston Villa is interested in signing Inter midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to the player's agent.

The Brazilian was loaned out to Espanyol last season and has made just five Serie A appearances for the San Siro club this term.

The 20-year-old's representative, Cacau Barbosa, has now revealed that his client is on the radar of Villans boss Paul Lambert.

"I can confirm Aston Villa made an enquiry," he told FC Inter News.

"They want him, but with all due respect for the proposal made to Philippe, at this moment there is still nothing concrete to suggest an exit from Inter.”
Coutinho scored on five occasions during his 16-game spell in La Liga last season.

Manchester City goalkeeper Hart unconcerned by critics

    227423hp2.jpg

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has dismissed criticism regarding his recent patchy form.

The England international has come under fire for some costly mistakes this season, including recently conceding a soft goal at his near post as Sunderland beat the reigning champions 1-0.

However, Hart insists he is unconcerned by the views of pundits and believes his high profile means he will always be scrutinized. He told Sky Sports: "If you weren't doing well, and winning things, then people wouldn't be interested in what you're doing.

"People are paid to make comments and do punditry but you've got to be strong and confident that you can turn up week in, week out and give the best you've got.
"Of course. I work hard, but sometimes I don't save it, it's as simple as that, it's not through lack of effort or concentration.

"You'd like to be perfect and make every save but, as much as we try to be, it's not going to happen."

Roberto Mancini's side has been accused of defensive instability this term, but Hart does not think the arrival of new players is to blame. He added: "That's definitely not the case. We know each other well and we all know how each other plays. We're a close group.

"We train hard and plan different scenarios, so it never feels foreign when someone comes in."

Tottenham not looking to bring Holtby in during January, Villas-Boas says

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that the club is not looking to bring Schalke midfielder Lewis Holtby in during the January transfer window.

The 22-year-old has signed a pre-contract agreement to join Spurs on a free transfer at the end of the season, but the Bundesliga side’s managing director Horst Heldt revealed that a move this month was still an option.

Villas-Boas told reporters: "When you reach an agreement with a player that is a free transfer in the summer, there is always that possibility, but it is not something we are looking to do."

Concerning possible outgoings, Villas-Boas insisted that it was "impossible" for William Gallas to leave in the near future after the defender was sent to a French clinic in an attempt to solve a persistent calf injury.QPR are thought to be interested in light of Ryan Nelsen’s imminent departure to take over as manager of MLS outfit Toronto FC.

Rs boss Harry Redknapp did, however, confirm his interest in Spurs midfielder Jake Livermore, and Villas-Boas was more forthcoming with a potential loan move.

The one-time England international made 38 appearances for the north London side under Redknapp last season, but has fallen behind Sandro, Tom Huddlestone and summer arrival Mousa Dembele this season, with fellow midfielder Scott Parker also recently returning to full fitness – with Livermore restricted to just 10 outings this term.

"There is a couple of possibilities for Jake to get a loan deal," Villas-Boas said.
"We are pretty happy with how he trains and how professional he has been but he hasn't had a lot of [playing] time. He is aware of these conversations. We just have to wait and see."

Casillas ready to prove Mourinho wrong

    241962hp2.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas says he is determined to show Jose Mourinho was wrong to leave him on the bench for recent matches against Malaga and Real Sociedad.

The 31-year old came off the bench on Sunday to replace his deputy, Antonio Adan, who had been sent off after just five minutes for a clumsy foul.

He subsequently made several key saves in the 4-0 win over Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, and wants to prove his worth.

"I'm not going through a bad spell, but I have to train more and better and show that I deserve to be in the team. I have to show Mourinho that he made a mistake," he told reporters at a publicity event.

"I don't mind him saying that I was too comfortable in the team, because he is in charge of the team, and it's what he believes."

"He didn't give me an explanation when he dropped me, but I don't think he has to say anything to me. It was a decision he took and that must be respected."

Real Madrid is well adrift of a rampant Barcelona in La Liga, and Casillas offered his insight on the situation.

"It's a team game, not for individuals. Last season it was very hard work to win the league, but well worth it," he continued.

"Certainly we have had some bad games, and we know it is practically impossible to win the league, but we must continue fighting as much as possible."

Sergio Ramos handed five-game ban for insulting referee

    245398hp2.jpg

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has been handed a five-match ban by the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

The 26-year-old was sent off against Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night and then unleashed a volley of abuse at referee Ayza Gamez.

He has been banned for one game for the red card, and a further four for repeatedly accusing the referee and his assistants of being "shameless crooks" and continually giving poor decisions against los Blancos.

The ban will start this Saturday, meaning he will miss league games against Osasuna, Valencia and Getafe, as well as both legs of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals against los Che.

Gamez recorded the incident in his post-match report, and although Ramos apologized afterwards, the RFEF has taken a dim view of his actions.

With Pepe out for over a month due to ankle surgery and Fabio Coentrao and Marcelo working their way back to fitness, Jose Mourinho will be short of defensive reinforcements in the coming weeks.

Tottenham unlikely to sign Damiao, admits Villas-Boas

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed the club is "extremely unlikely" to sign Internacional striker Leandro Damiao this month.

After Saturday's Premier League fixture against QPR, Jermain Defoe will be Spurs' only recognized first-team striker as Emmanuel Adebayor will travel to South Africa to join Togo's Africa Cup of Nations squad, with the tournament ending on Feb. 10.

Damiao has been previously linked with a move to White Hart Lane, but the Tottenham manager insists the 23-year-old won't be brought in to bolster his attacking options during the January transfer window.

"Leandro is a player we've always appreciated, that this club appreciated before I arrived, but it's extremely difficult that he's going to join Tottenham," said Villas-Boas.

"He's a player that is highly rated in the market, and it's unlikely that he will play for Tottenham."

Damiao has also reinforced his intention to stay at Internacional this month but the Brazil international concedes he could move clubs in the future.

"My agent told me that there is no offer, everyone around me knows that I want to stay," Damiao told Zero Hora.

"But I can't say that I'll stay forever, maybe there will be an offer in the long term and (my future) depends on the president too".

Messi is unmatched and deserved the Ballon d'Or, says Neymar

Santos forward Neymar has praised Barcelona star Lionel Messi, believing nobody can be compared to the Argentine.

Messi walked away with his fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or and the Brazil international is certain that the award went to the right man.

"Nobody can match Messi at the moment. He deserved the prize for what he did last year," Neymar told the press.

The highly-rated 20-year-old, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to join Messi at the Camp Nou, denied speculation suggesting he has already a pre-contractual agreement with Barcelona.

"I have nothing of the kind with Barcelona or any other club. I signed with Santos a contract that will see me stay here until 2014 and I am happy because this is a great club," he continued.

"My aim is to help Santos and the Brazil national team. When my time comes to leave, I promise I will warn everyone. But, its not the right time.

"I have no particular preference for any one club. There are many good clubs around the world."

Terry plays 45 minutes for Chelsea Under-21s

    227330hp2.jpg

Chelsea captain John Terry made a return to action by featuring for the club's Under-21 side against Fulham on Thursday night.

The 32-year-old played for 45 minutes as the Blues beat their local rival 2-0 thanks to goals from Islam Feruz and Lewis Baker.

Terry has been out of action since straining his knee ligaments in a collision with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez during a Premier League clash back in November.
Earlier this week, interim boss Rafael Benitez expressed hope that the center back might make a return in time for Saturday's meeting with Stoke.

He told reporters: "It depends on his reaction. Obviously Thursday will be a different kind of game but we will see how he feels.

"If he can feel okay and train the day after, at least we can start considering him as an option."

    Galatasaray expects imminent Sneijder deal

Wesley Sneijder is extremely likely to become a Galatasaray player, according to Abdurrahim Albayrak, who expects the playmaker to give the club an answer by Friday night.

The Super Lig holder agreed a fee with Inter to engage in talks with the Netherlands international earlier in the week, and the sporting director admits that his side expect to announce the midfielder's arrival soon.

"Sneijder transfer is one of great interest, especially the president's. All that is left is for the player to agree to the move," Albayrak told Sporx. "His wages are too high for Inter, and right now, it is most likely that the player will accept our terms."

"He is thinking about giving us an answer this evening. Perhaps he has yet to talk to other clubs, but Inter have agreed a deal with us for a fraction of his market value."

However, Albayrak stopped short of giving the transfer his seal of approval, adding: "There is no signature without the agreement so I cannot say much more.

"I've got to be very cautious and represent my club's interests."

West Ham completes Wellington Paulista loan deal

West Ham has completed the signing of Cruzeiro forward Wellington Paulista on a six-month loan deal.

The 29-year-old striker makes the move from South America with the option of a three-year permanent deal come the summer, and he becomes the second attacking reinforcement of the transfer window following the loan acquisition of Marouane Chamakh from Arsenal.

Paulista has revealed his pleasure at completing his transfer to London, but was also keen to state his desire to prove himself.

"I am really happy to be here at West Ham," he told the club’s official website. "Everyone has been very kind to me since I have been at the club this week. I think I can do my best here and I am coming to England to prove to everyone that I am one of the best strikers in Brazil and to get better and better."

Joint-chairman David Sullivan welcomed Paulista to Upton Park, adding that the Brazilian can go on to prove to be an "excellent acquisiton" for the club.

"He is another exciting player to add to our squad and although he may not be that well known on these shores, he comes with an excellent track record in Brazil," Sullivan said. "His arrival is similar to some of the other 'wildcard' players we have signed before like in Demba Ba and Ilan. They both made significant contributions and if he can match their efforts he will be an excellent acquisition for West Ham."
Paulista has enjoyed a prolific career across Brazil and also had a spell in Europe with Spanish side Alaves.

Moyes 'not concerned' by Fellaini transfer speculation

David Moyes has insisted that he is "not concerned" about reports suggesting Marouane Fellaini could be on the verge of an Everton exit.

Goal.com revealed in September that the versatile midfielder was regarded by Chelsea as a long-term replacement for Frank Lampard, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge when his contract expires in the summer, before confirming the Blues’ interest in triggering Fellaini’s release clause.

Reports have suggested that a fee upwards of 25 million pounds will be required to avoid negotiations with Everton, but Moyes believes there is no need to panic about the 25-year-old’s future, and he is hopeful the Belgian will stay at Goodison Park beyond the end of the current campaign.

"I'm not concerned [about Fellaini]," Moyes told reporters. "I'm quite cool with it, I think that's what they say nowadays. I'm quite comfortable. Hopefully Marouane will be here much longer than this season, even longer."

Fellaini has notched eight goals in 16 Premier League appearances so far this season, equalling his best return since arriving at Everton in 2008.

    Sneijder agent rubbishes Galatasaray claims

    245091hp2.jpg

Soren Lerby, the agent of Wesley Sneijder, has refuted suggestions that the Inter midfielder is on the verge of completing a transfer to Galatasaray.

The Super Lig leader was given permission to speak with the Netherlands international after they negotiated a fee with the Nerazzurri, and it was reported on Friday that the 28-year-old would "most likely" arrive at the Turk Telecom Arena within the next few days.

However, in quick response to the remarks made by the Turks' sporting director Abdurrahim Albayrak, Sneijder's representative insists he is unaware of an agreement between the two sides and is waiting on other teams to put their cards on the table.

"That's impossible," Lerby told Voetbal International. "We didn't even talk with Gala, so there couldn't be an agreement. I have no idea [about an agreement between the two sides]. Inter haven't told me about it. I don't expect Sneijder to sign a contract just yet.

"Anything is possible. Over the next few weeks we will consider every offer that comes our way. It's the choice of Wesley and his wife Yolanthe. Until then, Wesley needs to rest so he can make the right decision."

Barton: Media intrusion in England is excessive

    232621hp2.jpg

Marseille midfielder Joey Barton has hit out at what he believes is "excessive" intrusion from the press in England.

The Englishman, who is on a season-long loan with the French side from QPR, highlighted the recent furore over diving as evidence of unfair coverage.

He also insisted Gareth Bale has been targeted by journalists for his part in the controversy.

"The media follow the game to an almost excessive point in England. We have to adjust accordingly," Barton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Kicking Off. "The players need to take responsibility for their actions. We know what comes with the territory. I come onto the pitch carrying all the baggage. Gareth Bale has been a victim of the media baggage recently.

"Referees and linesmen read newspapers as well. They're not oblivious to what's going on. But it comes with the territory and you have to be cuter and a little cleverer in what you do. People make personal judgements on what they read in the newspaper. I don't hold any grudges about it though. I know I'm flawed and that I make a lot of bad decisions but I try to see the lighter side of things."

Barton was forced to serve a 12-game ban at the start of the campaign after being found guilty of violent conduct for his actions in the final game of last season.

The 30-year-old saw red after clashing with Manchester City duo Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, and attempted to headbutt Vincent Kompany as he was dragged from the pitch.

However, he has now admitted to feeling remorse over the situation, adding: "The way I handled the last day of last season wasn't right. But the power of hindsight is a great thing. We'd all do things differently with a bit of time to think about it.

"For me, I tend not to act well instantly; I get in a lot of trouble when I let my emotions get the better of me. I'd love to go back and alter the course of events and I'd try not to react to [Carlos] Tevez.

"Albeit, he hit me in the face. I can't condone what I did and I accepted the ban. Somehow I've ended up in the south of France and I've had a new lease of life."

Paris Saint-Germain 0-0 Ajaccio: Thiago Motta off as 10-man PSG held on Lucas’ debut

    245785hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain suffered frustration in its opening Ligue 1 match of 2013 as it were held to a scoreless draw against Ajaccio on the evening that Lucas Moura made his debut for the club.

Aside from a fine performance from the Brazilian on his Parc des Princes bow, the main talking points were a first-half red card for Thiago Motta, which left his side down to 10 men for the duration of the second period, and an injury to Thiago Silva that forced the center back off injured.

Depleted due to injuries and players on international duty, Ajaccio set its side up in a defensive fashion, as expected. Although it came under intense pressure, PSG was generally well restricted by the packed defence.

Thiago Motta might have given the hosts the lead when he caught the visitors sleeping from a Zlatan Ibrahimovic free kick, yet he allowed his shot to squirt wide. Blaise Matuidi was then the first of several home players to be denied by athletic visiting goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Matuidi would be les Parisiens’ dynamo throughout, but after bulldozing his way through the Corsican defence the Mexican was again there to deny him.

Until Frederic Sammaritano was crudely fouled by Thiago Motta on the stroke of halftime, earning the midfielder a red card, Ajaccio had been largely anonymous as an attacking force, despite the best efforts of Adrian Mutu, whose over eagerness to shoot was typified by a free kick from a ridiculously tight angle being fired into the side netting.

For a period following the red card, the dynamics of the game changed as Ajaccio looked more confident, but ultimately its backs-to-the-wall approach returned as PSG sought a winning goal.

Alex was a real threat aerially for Carlo Ancelotti’s men, yet Ochoa produced an incredible save to deny the Brazilian after a wicked Lucas cross, before Matuidi fired the rebound wastefully high.

The former Sao Paulo man impressed the home fans immensely, but he could not cap his debut with a goal, despite fashioning space for a shot after beating several defenders. His effort was ultimately deflected wide.

Ochoa, though, would be the hero of the hour for the visitors, blocking well from Zlatan Ibrahimovic after the Swede escaped the clutches of the visiting defence.

Ultimately, PSG would be stifled by its opponent, whose stuffy determination must be admired, even if some of the home finishing left much to be desired.

Under the charge of new boss Albert Emon, this was a fine response from the Corsicans after being dumped out of the Coupe de France last weekend by amateur opponents, while PSG faces the prospect of dropping to third in the league if Lyon and Marseille win their fixtures over the course of the next two days.

Reading signs Fulham defender Stephen Kelly

Reading has completed the signing of defender Stephen Kelly from Fulham for an undisclosed fee.

The fullback has penned a two-and-a-half year deal with the Royals but, with the move awaiting ratification, will be unable to make his debut in Saturday's clash with West Brom.

Kelly has made just two Premier League appearances so far this term for the Cottagers but his new manager, Brian McDermott, is confident he will make an impact.

“I’m delighted to have Stephen here,” he told the club's official website. “He has played a lot of games in the Premier League and more than 30 times for his country.

"He’s the kind of player I’ve been talking about – someone with great experience, but at 29 still young in football terms and at a really good stage in his career.

“I’ve always liked him as a player, and the first time I met him was at Kevin Doyle’s wedding a while ago now and I thought he was a top guy. I know he’s going to fit into the dressing room here really well. He’s up for the fight, up for the battle, he’s hungry, he wants to do well and I know he’ll be successful for us.”

The club's chairman, John Madejski, has also hailed the arrival of the defender - who will take the No. 27 shirt at the Berkshire club.

“It’s a great signing for Reading Football Club. He’s a proven international and Premier League player and he seems like a lovely guy as well," he said.

"We’ve had some great success stories with players from Ireland in recent years and I’m sure the signing of Stephen will be no different. I’m delighted he has signed and we all wish him very well during his career at Reading.”
