Malaga 2-4 Barcelona (Agg 4-6): Blaugrana set up semifinal showdown with Real Madrid

    249416hp2.jpg

Barcelona belatedly broke Malaga's game resistance in the closing stages of an epic Copa del Rey clash at the Rosaleda, triumphing 4-2 on the night, and 6-4 on aggregate, to set up a mouthwatering last-four encounter with great rival Real Madrid.

Twice the Blaugrana went ahead, through Pedro and Gerard Pique, and twice they were pegged back, first by Joaquin and then by Roque Santa Cruz. However, the Catalans reclaimed the lead through Andres Iniesta before Lionel Messi sealed their progression to the semifinals with a late header.

Barcelona’s disappointment at having drawn the first leg at home had been compounded by the shock of losing in La Liga for the first time this season, Tito Vilanova’s men suffering a dramatic defeat against Real Sociedad. However, they looked in fine fettle early on at the Rosaleda, taking the lead with the kind of wonderful passing move which has become their trademark in recent years.

Dani Alves advanced down the right wing before slipping a pass inside that Pedro cleverly allowed to run on to Xavi. The playmaker, as his wont, took a moment before smoothly slipping the ball through to Alves, who had continued his run in behind the Malaga defense. The Brazilian then calmly assessed his options before deftly chipping the ball up for the supporting Pedro to head home.

Other sides may have folded after being seemingly put so firmly in their place by Barca’s bewitching brilliance, but Malaga, as it so wonderfully underlined at Camp Nou the week before, is well able to mix it with the self-styled masters of the beautiful game and they drew level less than four minutes later, Joaquin sweeping home from just inside the Barca box.

The visitors went close to restoring their one-goal advantage, both on the night and on aggregate, at the end of a truly enthralling opening quarter when Martin Demichelis gifted possession to Lionel Messi on the edge of his own area, but the talismanic No. 10 saw his low strike well saved by Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni.

At the other end, Roque Santa Cruz was unable to control his volley after getting on the end of an inswinging cross from the left-hand side, but it was Barca which was still carrying the greater attacking threat and Andres Iniesta struck the top of the bar following a sublime one-two with Messi.

As it was, the two sides went in at halftime still level on the night and on aggregate, but with Malaga head on account of the away goals rule. However, Barca reclaimed the lead within four minutes of the restart, Pique showing the poise of a center forward in controlling a precision pass from Iniesta before slotting past Kameni.

Iniesta opened up the hosts' defense again on 67 minutes, scooping the ball through for Messi, who, again, inexplicably shot tamely at Kameni. It proved a costly miss because Malaga immediately counterattacked and Joaquin, after cutting infield, laid the ball off to Santa Cruz, who angled a shot past Jose Pinto via the right post.

Barca was furious, with a number of its contingent having felt that Fabregas had been stamped on by Weligton before Malaga had broken upfield. However, it did not allow their rage to get the better of the club and simply went about reclaiming the lead, which it did with just 10 minutes remaining.

Iniesta again provided the inspiration, playing another wonderful one-two, on this occasion with Fabregas, before sliding the ball under the advancing Kameni. This time around, Barca made sure that it finished the job, with Messi atoning for his earlier misses by heading home another wonderful delivery from the right from Alves.

Buffon has 'no regrets' over Barcelona snub

    249072hp2.jpg

Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon has revealed he does not regret rejecting a move to Barcelona as he is pleased with the way his career has turned out.

The Italy shot-stopper had the chance to join Barca in 2001, whilst at Parma, but opted to switch to Juventus for 39 million euros, a record fee for a goalkeeper.

And despite the success that the Catalans have enjoyed recently, Buffon insists he made the right decision.

"I do ask myself what my career would have been like now and again," the 34-year-old told reporters. "But Barcelona only started winning in 2006. Five years without winning anything is a long time. "Seeing how my career has developed, I have no regrets."

Buffon signed an extension to his contract on Wednesday, which will see the goalkeeper stay with the Turin outfit until June 2015.

Manchester United legend Schmeichel comes to De Gea's defense

    248187hp2.jpg

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has come to the defense of under-fire David De Gea, after the young goalkeeper was criticized following his side's 1-1 draw with Tottenham.

The 22-year-old was widely blamed for failing to deal with a cross into the United penalty area that allowed Clint Dempsey to fire in a last-minute equalizer from close range, but Schmeichel feels it is wrong to point the finger at the No. 1.

In fact, the former Old Trafford favorite believes Tottenham would have won the game convincingly were it not for De Gea’s contribution.

"It is very easy to claim De Gea is to blame," he told Sky Sports.

"I disagree. I think if De Gea had not played the way he did we would have lost 4-1.

"We played in a way that required the goalkeeper to make saves. He did that. He did his job. Nobody is highlighting that.

"My point is that if you are not that deep, we are not conceding those chances. That is the thing I would work on. In general, the way to win championships is not by defending as deeply as we did for the final hour on Sunday."Schmeichel not only highlighed the Spaniard's contributions throughout the game, but also insisted that he was not to blame on Dempsey's late equalizer.

"For the goal, David does all the right things. He got a fist to it under pressure but, unfortunately, the ball ends up with a Spurs player.

"We should be further up the pitch. If that starts with the goalkeeper, he needs to work on that, but we need them to be brave enough to take them out."

Newcastle sign Nancy left back Haidara on five-and-a-half year deal

Newcastle has confirmed the signing of Nancy left back Massadio Haidara on an five-and-a-half year contract.

The 20-year-old France youth international has been unveiled as the Magpie's fourth recruit from Ligue 1 of the transfer window, with Toulouse midfielder Moussa Sissoko also on his way.

The youngster joins a club currently sitting in 16th place in the Premier League, but he insists that he had no hesitations in making the move to the St. James' Park outfit.

"It was the desire of the club to sign me up which was the most important factor," Haidara toldthe club's official website. "It was nothing to do with the league position.

"It was really all about the club's desire and willingness to sign me up. Also, I like the club's ambition to strengthen the whole team so we can improve our league position. That's what appealed to me so I didn't hesitate."

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was delighted with his new recruit, saying, "Massadio is very highly thought of in France and he's somebody who our scouting team have been greatly impressed by.

"At the age of 20, he will only continue to get better but he's already played a lot of games in his country's top division and represented France at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 level.

"He's strong and quick and we're looking forward to seeing him develop here."

Haidara joins Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Yoan Gouffran and Moussa Sissoko in leaving France to join a club with an already healthy contingent of French players, such as Yohan Cabaye, Hatem Ben Arfa, Romain Amalfitano, Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux.

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda set for Stuttgart loan switch

    198231hp2.jpg

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda is set to join German side Stuttgart on loan until the end of the 2012-13 season.

The Premier League leaders have reached an agreement with the side currently 10th in the Bundesliga, with the 21-year-old currently in Germany to finalize the deal.

The Italian striker is leading the Under-21s goalscoring charts at United this season, and has made three appearances for the first team.

Macheda has had previous loan spells at QPR and Sampdoria, though in both instances the clubs parted company with their managers a short time after his arrival, and Macheda says he is happy to make the move.

"I have followed the Bundesliga and naturally know about Stuttgart," Macheda told the club's official website. "I am glad that I can now play for the club.

"For me, it is about getting to know the team and what I can bring because we have a lot of interesting games in three different competitions in front of us."

Macheda will wear No. 14 for Stuttgart.

AC Milan president Berlusconi claims no moves coming for Balotelli or Kaka

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has claimed that the club will not be making moves for Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli or Real Madrid midfielder Kaka.

Speculation has linked the club with a move for the out-of-favor Balotelli, and the Italian side was also in talks with Real Madrid about the possibility of bringing Kaka back to the San Siro, but Berlusconi revealed that his club may not have the finances to pull off either move."Neither Balotelli nor Kaka will arrive at Milan. These are impossible deals in times like this," Berlusconi said speaking on Radio 2 in Italy.

The Rossoneri are currently attempting to downsize financially, having allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thiago Silva and Alexandre Pato to leave in the past few months, but the club had been strongly mooted as a destination for the unsettled Balotelli, who is a lifelong fan of the club.

A move for former fan-favorite and 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year Kaka would likely be welcomed with open arms by the fans, but it now also looks unlikely in light of Berlusconi’s comments. AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani also claimed recently that negotiations with Real Madrid over Kaka broke down because of the finances involved.

Falcao: I am not thinking about a transfer

Radamel Falcao has again insisted he is not thinking about leaving Atletico Madrid and says his sole focus is lifting silverware at the Vicente Calderon.

The striker has been linked with clubs such as Chelsea and Real Madrid over the past few months, but even though he can see himself playing in another league at some point in the future, he says that is not at the forefront of his mind at present.

"I’m really at home with Atletico and I’m still under contract here," the Colombia international was quoted as saying by FIFA.com. "I’m sure that I’ll taste life in another league at some point in my career, but right now I’m only thinking about my club, in growing as a player and doing my bit to help us keep winning trophies."

The 26-year-old also had his say on the title race in La Liga, and admitted that Atletico is in for a tough task if the club is to leapfrog Barcelona.

"We’re aware that it’ll be tough to claw back the lead Barcelona have, though as long as there’s still a mathematical chance we’ll keep on fighting," he added. "Our main objective is securing a place in the Champions League. We’re very clear on that.

"It’s hard to compete because of the budget some of Spain’s most powerful teams have. They’ve got the best players in the world, while we’re just gradually growing stronger as a team."

Los Rojiblancos currently sit second in the Liga table, trailing Barcelona by eight points.

Arsenal target Diame: I want to stay at West Ham

West Ham midfielder Mohamed Diame insists he does not want to leave the club in the January transfer window.

The Senegal international has been linked with a move away from the club, with Arsenal interested in signing the 25-year-old, but Diame says he wants to stay at Upton Park

"I know there are people out there saying things about me, but I have spoken with the manager and told him that I want to stay here," Diame told the club's official website. "I know the club want to keep me too, so I will continue to give my best for them. I knew when I signed that West Ham were going to make their mark on the Premier League.

"Since I came here I am enjoying every game I play on the pitch. I think I made a good choice because I'm very happy at this club."

Manager Sam Allardyce also confirmed that the club has not received any bids for Diame and that he is expecting the midfielder to stay at West Ham.

"We've had no bids from any of the clubs that have been rumored in the papers. He's our player and hopefully come Feb. 1 he will still be our player," Allardyce said. "Players become unhappy by rumors that are spread. In the build-up to the transfer window, I spoke about the one thing that can upset your players is speculation that people want them.

"They think it could be the club talking about them in the press but it isn't. All I can say is that there have been no bids from clubs that I've seen in the press like Arsenal or Tottenham for Mo Diame."

'Lewandowski must do what is right for him' - Klinsmann

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann believes Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski should listen to what he wants rather than worry about what supporters or other dissenting voices might think.

The Pole is one of the most sought-after players in Europe, and now faces the option of whether to stay at BVB or move elsewhere.

And having been in a similar position himself, Klinsmann has advised the 24-year-old to ignore outside pressure and make his own decision.

"I think the most important perspective to look at it from is his own. If he's happy at Dortmund, and enjoying it, then keep enjoying it," he told reporters. "If he's hungry for another adventure, then go. He should do what he feels is right.

"If he decides to go to another league, whether it's the English, Italian or Spanish, then it is his decision.

However, the 48-year-old concedes that if Lewandowski was to leave BVB, then German football would be losing one of its brightest stars.

He added: "He's a special player and is fun to watch. Obviously Dortmund fans love him; German fans in general love to have a player like him."

Coloccini to stay at Newcastle and remain as captain, confirms Pardew

    241799hp2.jpg

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has confirmed that skipper Fabricio Coloccini will remain at the club until the end of the season and retain the captain's armband.
The Argentine defender was previously reported as being unhappy at the Magpies, with a move back to South America his preferred solution. Pardew said that the 31-year-old will stay at St. James' Park until the end of the season, though, while he will also keep the captain's armband.

"Coloccini will stay and will remain captain," Pardew told reporters at a press conference on Friday.Coloccini was initially believed to want a move back to Argentina to deal with personal matters, while it was recently reported that he told club officials he would not play another game for the Magpies. San Lorenzo was touted as a possible destination for the center back, but the Argentine club recently announced that Coloccini would not be joining their ranks despite "long negotiations."

It is believed that Coloccini will re-assess his situation at the end of the current season.

Isco set to sign new five-year deal at Malaga

    223828hp2.jpg

Isco is on the verge of signing a new five-year deal with Malaga, according to Mario Husillos, the club's director of football.

The 20-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, and although he was a target for Chelsea and Manchester City, it now appears that he will remain at the Spanish Liga outfit.

"Isco's contract renewal is in its advanced stages and should be signed shortly," Husillos said. "We will be here presenting Isco very soon. We will be here shortly to announce the renewal of his contract.

"It's not renewed as yet, but I think it will be very shortly. We understand it is virtually a done deal."

Goal.com understands the new contract will place Isco on approximately 58,000 euros per week, while he will pen a contract until 2018 that includes a buyout clause of 35 million euros.

"There are no sure things in football. Everything can change in an instant," Husillos said. "The club's intention and what Isco has stated is that he is going to stay here; he's going to renew his contract. Life can also throw up a lot of surprises. That is the most conclusive statement that the club can make on the issue."

The youngster has played a key part in the Andalusians' fine season to date, with his six goals helping the club advance to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and to fifth place in La Liga, with Husillos admitting a move away from La Rosaleda could happen in the future.

"Isco has really taken off. He's a great player and they want him at a number of clubs," Husillos said. "He's a Spanish international. We intend to keep him at Malaga for as long as possible.

"Everyone wants to improve, and if he continues growing like this, he'll have to go to a legendary European club. That's understandable."

Sanchez: Mourinho future was not discussed

    235478hp2.jpg

Real Madrid general director Jose Angel Sanchez has insisted the future of head coach Jose Mourinho was not discussed during Tuesday's meeting.

Marca reported on Thursday that captains Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos had demanded the departure of the Portuguese and had threatened to leave if Mourinho were to stay put, a claim that was vehemently denied by club president Florentino Perez during a press conference.

Even though the Spanish paper continue to stand by their story, Sanchez has once again refuted suggestions Mourinho's future at Madrid is in doubt.

"I can assure you that at no point did we discuss the future of Mourinho," the Madrid director told AS.

"Speculation that we did talk about it is nothing but a big lie. You cannot speculate about something this serious."

Mourinho has an ongoing contract with Madrid, but several publications continue to claim that he will leave the club at the end of this season.

'Tom is a good kid' - Liverpool academy chief McParland keen on Ince return

    244206hp2.jpg

Liverpool academy director Frank McParland has expressed excitement over the potential return of former Reds trainee Tom Ince.

The Blackpool wideman, who has scored 13 goals in 26 Championship appearances this season, has been strongly linked with a January move back to Anfield.

And, though McParland remained coy over whether the 20-year-old is a target for Brendan Rodgers, he had kind words for the winger.

"The first team is not really my domain and there's a lot of paper talk on so many players," he told Goal.com.

"I don't know whether the first team are interested in Tom Ince or not but he is a good player. He did great when he was here, he's a really good kid and we wish him well wherever he's going to be."

Goal.com exclusively revealed that Liverpool youngster Michael Ngoo is set for a loan spell with Hearts, and the agent of Jack Butland feels that his current club Birmingham is pricing the Reds out of a move for the goalkeeper.

Barcelona to meet Real Madrid in Copa del Rey semifinals for seventh time

Barcelona meets Real Madrid in the semifinals of the Copa del Rey for the seventh time in the history of the competition following a 6-4 aggregate win over Malaga in the quarterfinals.

The Santiago Bernabeu side had already booked its ticket for the final four earlier this week after proving too strong for Valencia.

The head-to-head record between the two sides stands at three victories apiece, with Madrid coming out victorious the last time they met in the semifinals in 1992-93.

The Spanish cup has gone through four name changes throughout its history (Copa Alfonso XIII, Copa Presidente, Copa Generalisimo and Copa del Rey) and 31 Clasicos have taken place in the competition during this time. Barca won 15 of those games, six ended in a draw and the Blancos bagged victory on 10 occasions.

The first leg of the semifinal will be held next week, and the return is scheduled for the last week of February.

Additionally, another Clasico takes place on March 2 as both arch-rivals meet in La Liga.

The Blaugrana and Madrid have already met on three occasions this season.

FA charges Eden Hazard with violent conduct following Swansea ball boy incident

    249338hp2.jpg

The Football Association has charged Chelsea forward Eden Hazard over the incident in which he appeared to kick a Swansea City ball boy.

Charlie Morgan, 17, attempted to prevent the Belgian from taking back the ball as the Blues desperately pushed for a comeback in Wednesday's second leg of the Capital One Cup semifinal. The 22-year-old was then red-carded for violent conduct after he kicked at the ball, which the ball boy had trapped under his body.

A statement on the FA's official website explained: "It is alleged that Hazard's behavior ... constituted violent conduct whereby the standard punishment that would otherwise apply was clearly insufficient."

The former Lille star has until Tuesday to respond to the charge.

While charging Hazard, the FA statement indicated that the ball boy's behavior would also need to be addressed.

"The FA will remind all clubs of their responsibilities in ensuring ball boys and other personnel around the pitch act in an appropriate manner at all times and will liaise with competitions accordingly," the FA wrote.

West Brom rejects Odemwingie transfer request

West Brom has confirmed that it has rejected an official transfer request from Nigeria international Peter Odemwingie. The 31-year-old forward, who has scored five goals in 18 Premier League appearances this term, has been the subject of strong interest from QPR.

Goal.com revealed last week that Odemwingie was on the verge of handing in a transfer request, and the forward has now made his stance clear to the club. The Baggies' sporting and technical director, Richard Garlick, has insisted the Hawthorns outfit will not consider losing its "core" players, though.

“Peter is hugely popular with our supporters, and it is disappointing that he has decided to hand in a transfer request," Garlick told the club's official website. "It was immediately turned down and has done nothing to change our stance during January. Peter is under contract until the summer of 2014, and we have no need or desire to sell our core players.

“We want to keep the squad intact to enable us to build on an encouraging first six months of the season."

    Atletico Madrid seals Insua deal

    247734hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid has announced the signing of Emiliano Insua from Sporting Lisbon for a fee of 3.5 million euros on a three-and-a-half year deal.

The Argentina international will act as competition for the left back spot for Filipe Luis, but he will be unable to play in the Europa League, having already represented the Portuguese side in the competition.

Insua won the 2007 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Argentina and had been with Sporting Lisbon since the summer of 2011, making 60 appearances and scoring six times.

Xavi: Casillas is the heart and soul of Real Madrid

    241742hp2.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has said that Iker Casillas will be missed by Real Madrid during his spell on the sidelines with a hand injury.

The Spain captain and goalkeeper broke a bone in his thumb during Real Madrid's Copa del Rey match with Valencia and is expected to be out for 6-to-8 weeks, which Xavi feels could prove costly to the champions.

"It's one more problem for them, he is the heart and soul of Real Madrid and their captain. He's a huge loss for Madrid and for Spain,” Xavi told reporters. The Blaugrana midfielder also spoke of his shock at Jose Mourinho's decision to drop Casillas for the league matches against Malaga and Real Sociedad either side of the winter break.

"I speak with [Casillas] a lot, we send each other messages," Xavi said. "I sent him my best wishes as soon as he was left out of the Madrid team; I was taken by surprise by that.

"It was a shock to me that a player who has spent so many years as the No. 1 and who was always in the team could suddenly be left out, but that's their problem.

Casillas' injury means he will miss Real Madrid's Copa del Rey semifinal tie against Xavi's Barcelona, but that, coupled with the internal drama at the Bernabeu, does not mean the veteran midfielder is expecting an easy path to the final.

“It's a complicated situation, and it's not for me to give my opinion on. I read the news and I can see that the club is not in the best shape at an institutional level," Xavi said. "But they will be very difficult opponents in the [Copa del Rey] semifinals and it will be very for us to beat them."
