Reina: I'm happy working with Rodgers

    251014hp2.jpg

The Liverpool goalkeeper says he has a great relationship with the manager despite reports suggesting that the Spaniard could be on his way out of the club in the summer.

Pepe Reina has praised the coaching of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and insists he is happy working with the Northern Irishman, despite speculation that he could be on his way out of Merseyside.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper has struggled in his eighth season at Anfield, suffering a dip in form that has coincided with rumors of his departure. Reina does not believe Rodgers’ methods have affected his form, though, and he has lauded the former Swansea manager’s tactics and approach to the game.

"I have a great relationship with him," Reina told LFC TV. "We have a lot of ideas in common and the way we see football is quite similar.

"Our understanding about tactics and feeling for football is very similar. I'm very happy with our manager.”

Reina was also full of admiration for the philosophy Rodgers is instilling, and believes the Reds, currently in eighth place in the league table, are capable of becoming great.

"It's about learning and he's certainly making sure we learn every day in training about ways to win,” Reina said. "That's important because at the end of the day, what you want to do is win.

"If you play good football, you'll definitely be closer to winning more games. That's where we are and my relationship with the manager is very good.

"If the players follow the philosophy we'll definitely become a great side - a difficult and strong side to beat and a competitive one."

Although Reina has always been adept at playing the ball out from the back, he still feels that the change to a more possession-based style of football has had an impact.

"There is no doubt that I am more involved with my feet than before, but so is the whole team," Reina said. "The amount of passes in every game is higher and higher compared to last season. It's a different style and I am happy with it."

Bartomeu: Barcelona waiting for Neymar's signal

    253183hp2.jpg

The Blaugrana official has made it clear the club are still keen to sign the forward, but will wait for the player to make a decision on his future.Barcelona vice-president Josep Bartomeu has revealed that the Catalans are ready to make a move for Santos sensation Neymar once he gives a signal that he is ready to leave his current club.

The Brazil international is continually being linked with a move to Europe, but he has repeatedly insisted that he is no rush to leave his native country before World Cup 2014 in his homeland.

Nevertheless, the Blaugrana continue to monitor Neymar's situation, and are ready to pounce when the 21-year-old decides to leave Santos.

"Neymar has to step up first and say that he's ready to leave Santos. When that happens, Barca will be ready to try and sign him, because the technical staff want him," Bartomeu told La Porteria.

"It is always good to sign an interesting player. We look at home first before we turn our attention to the transfer market."

Neymar has a contract with Peixe until after the 2014 World Cup.

Sevilla 2-2 Atletico Madrid (Agg 3-4): Visitors set up all-Madrid Copa final

The final of the 2012-13 Copa del Rey will be a capital affair in Spain, after Atletico Madrid booked its place against arch-city rival Real with a 2-2 tie with Sevilla, securing a 4-3 triumph on aggregate.

Diego Simeone's men again scored two in Andalucia thanks to strikes from Diego Costa and Radamel Falcao in the first half, while Jesus Navas and Ivan Rakitic's goals proved to be insufficient for the disappointed home support.

Having witnessed the Colchoneros take a narrow lead from the opening clash of the semifinal, fans of both Sevilla and Atletico were expecting a gripping clash as their men fought for a place in the Copa del Rey showpiece. Right from the outset, it was clear that they were not to be disappointed as Atleti raced into the lead.

Receiving the ball on the edge of the box, Diego Costa did fantastically well to simultaneously gain control while holding off the challenge of Alberto Botia. Turning the defender expertly, Costa was equally lethal in driving his shot low past the dive of Beto to open the scoring, earning the Brazilian his seventh goal of the cup campaign with just six minutes played.

Gary Medel had one of the Rojiblanco's best early efforts; having seen Jesus Navas slalom his way down the right flank and float in a cross. The Chilean was left with an almost empty net when Thibaut Courteois misjudged the flight of the ball, but nodded wide to squander the opportunity.

Atletico's retribution was swift. Falcao started his side on the offensive, taking the ball on the counter and opening up with a long pass to find strike partner Diego Costa. Costa flew down the left wing, and upon reaching the byline had the easy task of finding the Colombian in the penalty area, who barely broke stride as he converted coolly to complete the move.

Sevilla looked sunk 4-1 down on aggregate, but there was to be one beam of light in the first half; Navas turned in a delightful looping shot from the edge of the area as the match approached the midway stage, giving his side the slightest of lifelines for the remaining 45 minutes.

Sevilla continued playing positively after the interval, immediately forcing a save from Courteois who had to get down low to save Alvaro Negredo's free kick. A delightful pass from the forward then teed up Manuel del Moral, who drove straight at the keeper.

The efforts continued, as Sevilla refused to give up its quest for the final and Atletico failed to close the game down. Falcao went agonizingly close with a header that should really have hit the target, while minutes later it was Negredo's turn to take his head into his hands after seeing his own chance go wide.

But whatever opportunity Sevilla had of getting back into the game, with 15 minutes left it evaporated when Medel was expelled from the field for a second bookable offense. The ex-Boca Juniors and Universidad Catolica star had to be dragged away from the action as he was incensed by the decision.

And the Chilean's exit was the final straw for the hosts as they went out of the Copa del Rey in the penultimate stage, Ivan Rakitic's late strike too little to change the course of proceedings.

Atletico will now have the chance to win its second trophy under the direction of Diego Simeone, after lifting the Europa League title in 2012. Sevilla, meanwhile, misses out on the chance to challenge for the cup it last lifted in 2010.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Marseille: Zlatan the man once more as Ancelotti's side goes through

    259058hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain has advanced to the Coupe de France quarterfinals after a 2-0 win over Olympique de Marseille in their round of 16 clash at the Parc de Princes on Wednesday.

The hosts were the better team throughout, and replicated their margin of victory from Sunday's Le Classique meeting in Ligue 1, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as ever, making the difference with a goal in either half.

The Swede finished off Clement Chantome's long pass to open the scoring 35 minutes in, before doubling his tally from the penalty spot shortly after the hour mark to seal his side's progression into the last eight.

David Beckham started to make his full debut for the capital outfit, as one of eight changes made by Carlo Ancelotti from Sunday’s fixture. Marseille, meanwhile, remained unchanged, with Joey Barton lining up in midfield against his former England teammate.PSG generally looked the more likely to score in the early going, and with half an hour gone, Ibrahimovic forced the first real save of the game from Steve Mandanda, who spread himself well to push away the Swede’s attempt from outside the area.

It was a sign of things to come, and only minutes later, the home side was ahead. Chantome’s sublime searching pass was chased down by Ibrahimovic, who barged past the stumbling Lucas Mendes and slotted home despite a touch from Mandanda.

Marseille attempted to change its fortunes shortly after the restart, when Andre Pierre Gignac turned Zoumana Camara on the edge of the area, and forced a fine save from Nicolas Douchez with a low drive. From the resulting corner, Lucas headed narrowly over.

But as the second half wore on, PSG began to re-assert its superiority. Mendes had to turn away a dangerous cross from the toes of Kevin Gameiro, and from the corner, Gignac nodded away Camara’s header off the line. And with 64 minutes on the clock, the breakthrough would come again. Jeremy Morel, already left for dead by the power of Ibrahimovic, stuck out a late leg to trip him up inside the area.

The referee was left with little choice but to award the penalty, and Ibrahimovic stepped up to send Mandanda the wrong way from 12 yards out.The tie seemed done and dusted, with Marseille showing little up to that point that suggested it could find a way back into the contest.

With the game nearing its end, tempers finally boiled over, as a late challenge from Jordan Ayew on Beckham sparked a confrontation between both sets of players, with the original instigators both seeing yellow for their part in the incident.

Middlesbrough 0-2 Chelsea: Lackluster Blues set up Manchester United showdown

Chelsea set up a FA Cup quarterfinal tie against Manchester United with a 2-0 win against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

The hosts managed to hold the Blues until halftime but could do nothing about Ramires' deflected effort which gave the visitors the lead on the hour mark.

Victor Moses made sure of Chelsea's progress with his sixth goal of the season midway through the second half.

Rafa Benitez made eight of changes from the defeat to Manchester City last time out. John Terry returned in defense, while Yossi Benayoun made his first start in over two years and Nathan Ake made his full debut for the Blues in midfield.

Tony Mowbray, meanwhile, made three changes to the side which lost 2-1 at home to Millwall on Saturday, with Mustapha Carayol, Faris Haroun and Scott McDonald coming in.

A packed Riverside Stadium saw the hosts get off to a shakey start as Chelsea scuppered a number of early chances.

Paulo Ferreira was inches away from getting on the end of a cross from Oscar at the far post before Fernando Torres fizzed another fine pass across the Boro box with no teammate there to meet it.

The hosts survived another scare moments later when Victor Moses picked out Oscar in the box after a powerful run, but the Brazilian's first-time finish was well blocked by Jason Steele.

But Mowbray's side managed to get back into the tie midway through the first half with the help of the home support. McDonald wasted a glorious chance when he headed inches wide of the post after meeting Nicky Bailey's cross in the 26th minute.

Boro continued to grow into the game and almost had a chance when Petr Cech spilled Mustapha Carayol's long-range shot five minutes before the break but Terry reacted first and was on hand to clear the danger.

Benitez would have had some stern words for his players at the break as their bright start quickly dissipated allowing the hosts to gain the impetus.

Chelsea came out for the second half with visible intent and the club was immediately rewarded as Ramires curled home a right-footed shot from the edge of the area which took a deflection off Torres on it's way into the top corner, just six minutes after the break.

The visitors could have doubled their lead on the hour but Torres' shot whistled over the bar after he managed to beat Boro's offside trap.

The game was eventually wrapped up in the 72nd minute when Oscar and substitute Eden Hazard picked apart the Boro defense before Moses capped off a fine move with an easy tap in from close range. The Belgian had transformed the game after coming on from the bench.

Oscar wasted a chance to get Chelsea's third and Middlesbrough came close through Seb Hines in the closing stages.

Another chance went begging for Boro when Miller sliced his left-footed shot into the side netting at the death but at that point the visitor's progress into the sixth-round was already secure.

Bayern Munich 1-0 Borussia Dortmund: Robben cracker brings treble dream into focus

Bayern Munich kept its dream of winning the treble alive by beating Borussia Dortmund 1-0 to claim a place in the DFB-Pokal semifinal.

An Arjen Robben strike just before halftime was all there was to separate the two teams in a tense match, which saw Roman Weidenfeller make a string of key saves to keep the Bavarians at bay.

With the hosts in superb form, it was Jupp Heynckes' side which showed all of the early initiative. In just the fourth minute, Dante lifted the ball over the top, but neither Bastian Schweinsteiger nor Thomas Muller's outstretched legs could reach it.

Shortly afterwards, Robben forced a great save from Roman Weidenfeller after being played in by Toni Kroos, who later had a great chance of his own after the keeper pushed a deflected cross into his path, but could not adjust his body in time.

At the other end, Dortmund had very little to show for its efforts. Only Mario Gotze looked to be capable of producing anything of note, but all of his efforts were eventually in vain, as the Roten defense stood firm.

Bayern began to exert its dominance on the game more and more as the half wore on. An heroic header from Felipe Santana stopped Dante from reaching a left-wing cross and Dante produced a fine save from Weidenfeller from close-range after a superb ball from Schweinsteiger, before Robben's moment arrived.

The Dutchman had missed two superb chances to open the scoring, sending one over the bar from close range, and forcing the busy Weidenfeller itno another stop, but in the 43rd minute, some hesitant defending from Marcel Schmelzer allowed Philipp Lahm to feed Robben, who lifted the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.

Within seconds of the start of the second half, Muller had a chance to double the advantage, but could not get the ball out of his path, allowing the BVB defence to come back in numbers.

And so it remained. Bayern continued to dominate possession, and while Dortmund had a couple of bright moments on the break, it had little to show for its efforts, save an Ilkay Gundogan effort from distance which Manuel Neuer stopped with ease.

Eventually, though, the club began to craft out better sights of goal. The Germany midfielder had another strike blocked, before Marco Reus, who had been a quiet presence for much of the game, flashed another shot wide of goal.

Bayern, though, was still capable of testing Weidenfeller time and time again, with Kroos having two strikes, one from close range and one from distance, beaten away by the BVB keeper, before Martinez saw an effort an effort tipped over.

Daniel Van Buyten missed the target with a header from a corner, and Dante had two efforts saved by Weidenfeller from another set piece. The keeper was in action late on to deny Mario Mandzukic

Time was rapidly running out for Dortmund to grab an equalizer, and although it pressed and probed, Bayern's defense remained firm and impregnable. Its best chance arrived deep into stoppage time when Lukasz Piszczek crossed for Julian Schieber, who headed over from close range.

In the end, there was no dramatic twist in the tale, and the Bundesliga leaders held on to claim their place in the last four.

Meanwhile, Freiburg has also made the semifinals by producing a superb late comeback to beat Mainz 3-2 after extra-time, with Daniel Caligiuri scoring twice, former Bayern man Ivica Olic found the net as Wolfsburg triumphed over Kickers Offenbach, and Stuttgart claimed a 2-0 win over Bochum.

Falcao proud despite 'ugly' Copa win

    258234hp2.jpg

The prolific Colombian was thrilled and relieved after his goal helped Los Colchoneros edge a bad-tempered clash with Los Rojiblancos to book their place in the final Radamel Falcao has spoken of his sense of achievement after helping Atletico Madrid reach its second Copa del Rey final in four years with a 4-3 aggregate win over Sevilla.

Falcao's 29th minute strike was crucial as it sent the away side into a 4-1 aggregate lead, which proved unassailable despite the hosts' comeback.

"Being in the final is very important for Atletico, [so] we are pleased and we are proud," Falcao told reporters after the match. "The end of the match was ugly, but it doesn't matter," he added, referring to Gary Medel's incensed reaction to being red-carded as the match drifted away from the Andalusians.

Former Porto striker Falcao also admitted that Atletico's first-leg advantage and its opponents' increasing attempts to chase the game played into its hands.

"We had a good strategy. We knew they would try to win and that would give us chances, and we took advantage.

"I'm happy because we put in a lot of work and effort."

Beckham: I feel at home at Paris Saint-Germain

    259093hp2.jpg

Coach Carlo Ancelotti was equally thrilled with the 37-year-old's full debut, but hinted that they may appeal UEFA's "incredible" two-game ban imposed on Zlatan Ibrahimovic David Beckham was thrilled to have made his full debut for Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night, claiming that he feels "at home" with his new squad.

Beckham played 85 minutes of PSG's 2-0 Coupe de France win over Olympique de Marseille at Parc des Princes, and the former England captain was full of praise for the way his teammates have helped him settle.

"It's always good to start a match," he told RMC. "It was a pleasure. I feel at home, I'm playing with super players in a super team. I felt good, but I cannot always play 85 minutes immediately."

Beckham was harshly booked shortly before being substituted after a confrontation with Jordan Ayew, but he insists such incidents are par for the course in big games.

"The coming together with Jordan Ayew? This happens in big matches like this. The tension is high. I'm not complaining," he said.

Sporting director Leonardo added that Beckham's display was evidence that the former Real Madrid star has not simply been signed for commercial reasons.

"He did not arrive just so we could take pictures, press conferences and sell jerseys. Today was the confirmation of that," he said.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti also praised Beckham's contribution in his post-match press conference, but revealed his frustration at UEFA's decision to hit Zlatan Ibrahimovic with a two-game Champions League ban following his red card against Valencia.

"Beckham had a very good game," said Ancelotti. "As usual, he delivered good passes, and played well in the axis with [Blaise] Matuidi. He showed he could play, even though he is 37.

"It was a different game to last Sunday. Marseille used different tactics. They played deeper to prevent us from playing. In fact, it was easier for us to keep the ball.

"Ibrahimovic's Champions League suspension? I was surprised when he got the red card. To see UEFA impose a two game ban is incredible. I hope they will reconsider their decision."
