Atalanta 0-1 Juventus: Matri ensures Scudetto celebrations continue

    278622hp2.jpg

Newly-crowned Serie A champion Juventus continued its stellar domestic run of results with a narrow 1-0 win over Atalanta at Stadio Atleti Azzurri d'Italia on Wednesday.

The Bianconeri had little left to play for after clinching the Scudetto against Palermo on Sunday, but picked up their ninth straight league win thanks to Alessandro Matri's well-worked first-half goal.

With the title wrapped up over the weekend, Antonio Conte opted to give some of the less-heralded names in his squad a chance to shine, as Marco Storari, Luca Marrone and Simone Padoin all started.

The opening goal came in the 18th minute courtesy of good work from Andrea Pirlo who clipped a sublime pass between the center backs for Matri, who controlled superbly before lashing into the far side.

The goal seemed to coax the home side out of its shell, but it was Juve which nearly struck again less than 10 minutes later. Mauricio Isla’s fantastic cross was begging to be met and Paolo De Ceglie obliged, but his stooping header was just wide.

But just when it seemed like matters on the pitch were picking up, events in the stands ground proceedings to a halt. Flares and smoke bombs were thrown, forcing the referee to stop the game, with Conte and Juve defender Giorgio Chiellini making frantic appeals for the away fans to behave.

When play resumed Martin Caceres gave the ball away and German Denis pounced from a quick cross, smashing the ball towards goal from inside the box, only to see the base of the post deny him.

Atalanta continued to look dangerous after the restart, but it was Juve which carved out the better opportunities. Emanuele Giaccherini blasted over the bar at the end of a counter, before Matri missed a gilt-edged cross from Isla yards out.

The game exploded back into life in the 81st minute. Federico Peluso avoided a penalty call for a clear handball and Juve was swiftly down the other end of the pitch, with substitute Arturo Vidal seeing a close-range effort denied by Andrea Consigli.

That was the last meaningful action of the match, but Atalanta perhaps was not too disappointed in the final score, as results elsewhere confirmed the club'a survival for another campaign.

Inter 1-3 Lazio: Stramaccioni's sorry side fall to yet another defeat

    278632hp2.jpg

Inter's hopes of competing in European competition were ended as some lackluster defending helped Lazio to a 3-1 win at San Siro.

Andrea Stramaccioni's men began well but were pegged back by a defensive mix-up which saw Samir Handanovic turn into his own net. Ricardo Alvarez equalized for the hosts before Hernanes capped his 100th Serie A appearance with a goal from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime.

Inter resorted to shooting from range in the second half but none could provide the sort of effort that Ogenyi Onazi did to grab the third for Vladimir Petkovic's men, consigning the hosts to a record 15th league defeat in one season.

In a lively start to proceedings which saw both teams on the attack, the best chance of the early exchanges came in the 10th minute.

Mateo Kovacic wriggled away from a group of Biancocelesti shirts, surged forward and slipped perfectly-weighted through-ball to Tommaso Rocchi who saw his shot beaten away by Federico Marchetti.

The Nerazzurri continued upon their positive start but some shambolic defending saw them fall behind in the 22nd minute.

A lack of communication was evident as Handanovic failed to claim Antonio Candreva's cross, instead deflecting the ball into the back of the net with the help of Andrea Ranocchia.

Candreva could have then added one himself two minutes later as Lazio countered but he dragged his shot wide when one-on-one with the keeper.

Inter fought back and after Handanovic had denied Candreva from an acute angle, the hosts restored parity.

Alvaro Pereira worked enough space on the left to send a cross into the area and Alvarez towered over Lorik Cana to head the ball in off the underside of the crossbar.

There was little Marchetti could have done to stop that effort, but two minutes later he proved his quality with a tremendous save to send Esteban Cambiasso's shot onto the post and behind.

Stramaccioni's men could have added to their tally further before the break but Lazio was gifted the chance to go take an advantage into the break as Ranocchia felled Floccari in the area. Hernanes took responsibility from the spot, stuttering on his run-up before lashing the ball into the corner.

Fredy Guarin had been extremely quiet in the first half but emerged as a different player after the restart, but the Colombian failed to convert from a trio of great chances before the hour mark.

The Nerazzurri ramped up the pressure on their visitors and Guarin's persistence eventually reaped rewards as he drew a foul from Cana inside the area. Alvarez stepped up to take the spot kick but lost his footing as he struck the ball and sent it well off target with 20 minutes.

It took a top save from Handanovic to keep out Hernanes but there was no chance that the Slovenian was going to get anywhere near a thunderous effort from Onazi that arrowed into the top corner with 13 minutes left.

The goal all but ended hopes of a comeback for Inter, which will not feature on the continent next season following Udinese's win over Palermo. Lazio, meanwhile, has every chance of playing European football next term.

Chelsea 2-2 Tottenham: Late Sigurdsson strike keeps three-way fight for fourth alive

Gylfi Sigurdsson scored a late equalizer to earn Tottenham a 2-2 draw at Chelsea and keep the race alive for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea took an early lead when Oscar turned in a corner from close range at the back post before Spurs drew level through a superb 25-yard strike from Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Blues again went ahead six minutes before the break as Ramires broke through and produced a toe-poked finish into the bottom corner.

Rafa Benitez’s side had chances to seal the victory after the re-start but Spurs substitute Sigurdsson scored the visitors’ second equalizer of the game 10 minutes from time with a curling low shot.

The result means third-placed Chelsea is not yet assured of a place in the top four while qualification for the Champions League is out of Tottenham’s hands as it sits one point behind Arsenal with two matches to play.

Both sides made three changes to the starting line-ups that won their weekend matches, with Fernando Torres selected as Chelsea’s lone striker and Frank Lampard dropping to the bench as he chases Bobby Tambling’s club scoring record.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas was dealt a blow as Mousa Dembele missed out with a muscle injury as Scott Parker and Lewis Holtby came into the side.

Villas-Boas spoke before the match of his belief that an attacking style of football is crucial as he returned to Stamford Bridge for the first time since being sacked in March last year - and both sides went on the attack during an open first 45 minutes.

Chelsea had the first chance of the game when Juan Mata fired over the crossbar in the seventh minute, but it only had to wait three more minutes to break the deadlock.

Mata swung in a corner from the right that Gary Cahill flicked on as he nipped in front of Michael Dawson and Oscar was on hand to head the ball home from close range.

In the 26th minute, Tottenham cleared a Chelsea corner and Scott Parker played the ball to Adebayor deep in his own half. The Togolese striker, so off form all season, ran at the Chelsea defense before curling a wonderful strike into the top corner past Petr Cech.

Six minutes before halftime, Chelsea once again took the lead. Fernando Torres did well to escape from Spurs defenders on the right touchline and slipped in Ramires, who at full speed toe-poked an unstoppable finish into the far corner.

Chelsea started the second-half with more purpose than the visitors and should have extended the advantage. Eden Hazard fired over from a tight angle before Ramires slipped when he looked certain to score after being played in by Mata.

But Tottenham took control as the second half wore on and Adebayor was again at the heart of the move as he produced a sublime first-time flick for substitute Sigurdsson to curl low into the corner from 12 yards out.

Real Madrid 6-2 Malaga: Ronaldo reaches 200 goals in romp

    278639hp2.jpg

Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid efficiently dispatched nine-man Malaga 6-2 at Bernabeu, in La Liga's re-arranged fixture on Wednesday, putting four first half goals past the helpless visitors.

Goals from Raul Albiol, Cristiano Ronaldo, Mesut Ozil, Karim Benzema, Angel Di Maria and Luka Modric wrapped up the win for Los Blancos, who showed no signs of letting up despite Barcelona securing the league title.

Albiol gave his side a dream start after merely three minutes, heading home a Modric corner at the back post, but initial good work was undone when Malaga replied with its own set piece conversion twelve minutes later, as Roque Santa Cruz escaped his marker at the back post to tap home a flick-on.

On 21 minutes, Ronaldo was tugged down by Malaga's Sergio Sanchez in the visitors' box, resulting in a penalty for Real and a red card produced for the Spaniard. Despite stepping up assuredly, Ronaldo saw his penalty effort saved brilliantly by the toe of Willy.

The mood inside Bernabeu was to change only minutes later, as Ronaldo made no mistake from an indirect free-kick from ten yards, blasting the ball into the top right corner - despite debatable positioning from both the Malaga wall and goalkeeper.

Just after the half-hour mark, it was three for Los Blancos, as Malaga fell victim to the trademark Real Madrid counter attack. Mesut Ozil was threaded through on goal by Gonzalo Higuain, before chopping nicely inside Antunes and sliding the ball past Willy.

Malaga was not be be counted out of the game before the half time whistle, however, as Antunes found the net from a surprisingly advanced position. After being laid off by Javier Portillo, the left-back cut inside before unleashing a right footed drive into the top corner, leaving Diego Lopez with no chance.

A forced change of goalkeeper proved to make no difference to the first-half onslaught of Jose Mourinho's men, as Ronaldo toyed with substitute Carlos Kameni, before squaring the ball for Karim Benzema to tap home unmarked in first half stoppage time.

The second half started in a different vein to the first, as Real began to press and exert its dominance as a result of its extra man, but goals and clear-cut opportunities were not forthcoming.

Despite a 20-minute lull, the away side couldn't stay resilient, and it was five for Real on 64 minutes. The tireless Modric picked up a goal for all of his good work, finding the inside of the post with a long-range strike.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors in the 73rd minute, as Martin Demichelis was shown a second yellow for bringing down Ronaldo, halting the Portuguese international's mazy run, meaning that Malaga had to battle on with only nine men.

Di Maria ended the rout in style in second half stoppage time, firing a low drive into the bottom corner, despite Kameni's best efforts to get down to his right.

Mourinho reaches the 80 point mark in style, and his Real Madrid side moves ten points ahead of rival Atletico with only three league games left to play.

Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez: A 'blessing' to work with Sir Alex Ferguson

    126074hp2.jpg

With Ferguson set to retire at the end of the season, Chicharito paid his compliments to the man who brought him to Europe. Manchester United striker Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez heaped praise on outgoing manager Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the affection he clearly holds for the 71-year-old Scot. Ferguson announced Wednesday that he will retire following the current Premier League season.

“When I retire, it will be satisfying to say that I was one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s boys,” Mexico international Hernandez told TV Azteca. “More than an anecdote for me, I see it as an achievement and a blessing.

“It’s a source of pride to say I was with one of the best coaches in history."

Since Hernandez joined Manchester United in summer of 2010, the 24-year-old has won two Premier League titles under Ferguson and has regularly earned the praise of arguably Britain’s greatest ever manager for his attitude and goal-scoring ability.

Chicharito is reciprocal in his praise of Ferguson, describing him as a “gentleman” and adding that he lives up to the title of “Sir.”

“He treats everyone equally. He’s always helping you,” Hernandez said. “Something that impresses me is that he never lost his competitiveness; in spite of everything he won, he continues to be hungry. He’s a winner.”

Whether Ferguson’s departure will affect Hernandez’s position at the club is not yet known, although the player has never given any indication that he wants to move on, despite rumors linking him with other clubs.

Everton chairman Kenwright hints at Moyes departure to Manchester United

    278393hp2.jpg

The Toffees' chairman admits that the manager has a decision to make, stating that he had "served the club wonderfully well", but confirmed he would be in charge against West Ham Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has hinted that David Moyes will succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as the next manager of Manchester United, stating that the 50-year-old "has a right to make his own decisions".

The Scot will replace his compatriot at Old Trafford, with the Toffees lining up a move for Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.

Moyes, who is out of contract this summer, met Kenwright in London on Wednesday. However, while the 67-year-old says he is unaware of any deal between United and Moyes, he concedes that the decision is Moyes' to make.

"I don't know about a deal being done. David had a meeting scheduled with me and we had a good meeting," Kenwright told Sky Sports News. "I think at the end of the day, David's contract is up in six weeks' time and he has a right to make his own decisions. He's served this club wonderfully well and he has a right to make his own decision.

"It's 22:45 BST and you've been waiting for me all day, I really just want to go home now, see the dogs, have a cup of tea and go to bed. I don't know anything about [reports of Moyes leaving]."

Kenwright also confirmed that Moyes would be in charge of the Toffees' Premier League game against West Ham this weekend.

Phil Neville in running for Man United and Everton coaching roles

    270682hp2.jpg

The Toffees captain has announced he will leave Goodison Park at the end of the season, but could quit playing altogether with the chance to follow David Moyes to Old Trafford Phil Neville is being considered for a senior coaching role by both Manchester United and Everton, Goal understands, with David Moyes set to be announced as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Old Trafford later this week.

Neville, who turned 36 in January, is still considering his options over whether he wants to retire from playing and move into coaching, but is being lined up for a backroom position by both clubs.

Moyes, who will be confirmed as Ferguson's replacement after the 71-year-old announced his stunning retirement on Wednesday, is keen to harness Neville's experience in the dugout at the Theater of Dreams next term.

There have also been suggestions on Merseyside that Neville could be Moyes' shock successor at Goodison Park next season, but Goal understands that Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright has earmarked Wigan boss Roberto Martinez as the club's number one target.

Moyes had publicly offered Neville a coaching role at Everton after the defender announced he would leave Goodison Park in April, stating: "If he wants to be part of my staff here he is more than welcome, he really is.

"He has been a big, powerful influence here for eight years and a big help to me in my job."

And despite Neville having insisted that he wants to continue playing at the highest level, it is thought by sources close to United that the chance of returning to Old Trafford, where he made 386 appearances under Ferguson, could make him reconsider.

Neville will join the England Under-21 coaching staff ahead of this summer's European Championships in Israel, having worked with Stuart Pearce's backroom team ahead of a qualifier against Belgium in February 2012.

Tottenham boss Villas-Boas hoping for a favor in top-four battle

Spurs picked up a crucial point at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night as Gylfi Sigurdsson struck late on, but they must now rely on other clubs to secure a Champions League berth Andre Villas-Boas says Champions League qualification is no longer in Tottenham’s hands following its 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Chelsea took the lead through Oscar before Emmanuel Adebayor equalized with a tremendous strike, but Ramires re-established the one-goal margin until Gylfi Sigurdsson rescued a point for Spurs with 10 minutes to play.

The result means that with two matches left to play, Chelsea remains in third place with 69 points, two ahead of Arsenal and three in front of Spurs, meaning Villas-Boas’s side must now rely on other teams if it is to finish in the top four.

He told Sky Sports: “Obviously with a point we don't depend on ourselves any more, people have to drop points, but our focus is on doing our job in the remaining fixtures and in the Premier League anything can happen, so let's keep the faith.

“We wanted to win obviously, [but] the feeling is that a point is not bad. Our focus will be to do our job and with the teams that Arsenal and Chelsea have to play, us too, fighting for survival, hopefully something can happen.

“The Premier League is completely unpredictable. Wigan have to go to Arsenal, Chelsea have a difficult game against Villa on Saturday. We have a difficult game against Stoke who are also fighting. These next fixtures before the emotions of the final day of the season can be decisive.”

The first half saw Chelsea generally control the match and the hosts took a 2-1 lead into the break, but Villas-Boas believes his side reacted well in the second period as Chelsea became more aggressive.

“It was good for us to get back into the game," he continued. "In the second half we increased the tempo and played really, really well. It was difficult to control all of Chelsea's creativity, but we had great determination at 2-1 to hold on to their attacking strength and create our own chances.

“Chelsea became very, very aggressive in the second half so that's why we thought of strengthening our midfield. We put Sig [Sigurdsson] on the left coming inside and then [Clint] Dempsey on to increase our options in the middle to link up with Adebayor.

“With that I think we managed in the last 20 minutes to avoid Chelsea's pressure, started finding a lot more spaces and had the control of the last 20 minutes, but Chelsea on the counter looked extremely dangerous.”

Villas-Boas went on to praise his two goalscorers as he endorsed Adebayor’s selection as Man of the Match before highlighting Sigurdsson’s persistence at getting into good positions this season despite luck rarely going his way.

“[They were] great goals,” he said. “Ade's [Adebayor] first goal is absolutely unbelievable, for him to score in such a decisive place. He had a great great game, [and] really linked up the game well for us and we saw that finishing touch that he has. I think he was a fully deserved man of the match.

“Gylfi [Sigurdsson] did ever so well. He gets into these goalscoring positions a lot. He's been extremely unlucky this season because he's been in deadly positions before, [but] he hit the post and hit the bar, but today it was a deadly finish.”
