Cavani admits to Real Madrid 'dream'

    280104_heroa.jpg

The Uruguay international has spoken of his desire to wear the jersey of los Blancos before repeating that he will make a decision on his future after the Confederations Cup. Napoli star Edinson Cavani has once more admitted that a transfer to Real Madrid would be a dream come true, as he continues to flirt with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Uruguay international's mother recently revealed that Cavani is in talks with Manchester City as well as Madrid, while Chelsea recently had a formal offer turned down by Napoli.

The 26-year-old's preferred destination seems to be La Liga, though, with a move to Madrid a childhood dream for the prolific attacker.

"I am very calm about my future. Madrid are a great club and every player dreams of playing there," Cavani told Cadena COPE. "I am a Napoli player for now, though, and I am focused on the Confederations Cup. It is not only up to me what the clubs decide. There are other factors that must be taken into account.

"There's a lot of talk about Madrid's interest, so we will see what happens. Nobody has said anything officially."

Cavani has a contract with Napoli until June 2017.

Heynckes: Bayern should sign 'class act' Isco

The recently retired coach thinks his former club ought to buy the Spain Under-21 international ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.Former Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has suggested the treble-winning side enter the race and make a move for Malaga star Isco in the summer transfer window.

The attacking midfielder is continually being linked with a move to a bigger club following his fine performances in 2012-13 and revealed earlier this week that Manchester City and Real Madrid are keen to lure him away from his current club ahead of next season.

Bayern has already secured the services of Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund and Jan Kirchhoff from Mainz for next season, and if it were up to Heynckes, the Spain Under-21 international would continue his career at the Bundesliga giant as well.

The 21-year-old has a contract with Malaga until 2016, but he has a 35 million euro buyout clause.

"Who should Bayern sign? There are some very interesting players out there, like Malaga star Isco. He's a class act in midfield," Heynckes told Kicker.

Heynckes announced his retirement from coaching after guiding Bayern to a historic treble this past season. The Bavarians had previously already appointed Pep Guardiola as his successor.

Verratti: Spain U21s are worthy winners

    289591_heroa.jpg

The Paris Saint-Germain star has offered his congratulations to La Rojita following their victory over the Azzurrini, cementing their second European U-21 title in a row.Marco Verratti says Spain is a worthy winner of the European Under-21 Championship following Tuesday's 4-2 victory over Italy in the final of the competition.

Thiago netted a first-half hat trick for the Spaniards before Malaga star Isco added a fourth from the penalty spot midway through the second half, with Ciro Immobile and Fabio Borini's goals 10 minutes from the start and end of the match, respectively unable to impact the result.Verratti, who played 75 minutes of the showpiece, believes La Rojita - who were defending their title - are deserved victors of the tournament.

"It was always going to be a difficult game, but we knew that right from the start," Verratti told Rai Sport. "We took to the field with a desire to win, but unfortunately did not succeed."Spain were superior to us and we must congratulate them."

Italy Under-21 coach Devis Mangia went on to praise his team for its efforts throughout the tournament and believes inexperience is the reason why it fell at the final hurdle."I had to thank the lads and the staff. They achieved something important and I hope everyone can recognize their merits," Mangia said. "The only flaw today was inexperience and that was not their fault. It can only arrive with playing time at the top level and experience.

"I must compliment the team, as not many would've tried to stay in the game right to the end with that result."
Spain collected its fourth title following the victory, but Italy still boasts the highest number of European Under-21 Championships with five.

Italy 4-3 Japan: Giovinco settles all-time classic Confederations Cup encounter

    290017hp2.jpg

An incredible clash at the Itaipava Arena Pernambuco saw Italy book its place in the Confederations Cup semifinals with a 4-3 defeat over Japan, which was eliminated from the tournament in heartbreaking fashion.

Needing a win to stand a chance of making the last four, Alberto Zaccheroni's men got off to an incredible start, racing into a two-goal lead through Keisuke Honda's penalty and Shinji Kagawa's neat finish.

But a spectacular 11-minute turnaround either side of halftime saw Italy score three to retake the lead, through Daniele de Rossi's header, Atsuto Uchida's own goal and Mario Balotelli's penalty.

Shinji Okazaki then drew Japan level with 21 minutes remaining, but despite a late rally by the Samurai Blue, they were finished for good with four minutes remaning by Sebastian Giovinco's strike, as Italy joins Brazil as Group A's representatives in the last four.

Cesare Prandelli made two changes to the side that beat Mexico 2-1 Sunday, with Christian Maggi and Alberto Aquilani coming in for Ignazio Abate and Claudio Marchisio, while Japan saw Ryoichi Maeda return to lead the line.

And the Jubilo Iwata forward could have made an instant impact after only five minutes, but did not direct his header well from Kagawa’s inch-perfect cross, as Gianluigi Buffon saved comfortably.

Zaccheroni’s men were the brighter side throughout the opening exchanges, and with 20 minutes on the clock, were handed the chance to take the lead when Buffon conceded a penalty after upending Okazaki inside the area.

The keeper escaped with only a yellow card, but was powerless to stop Honda’s low strike to the bottom right corner from 12 yards, despite guessing correctly.

Balotelli was then incredulous that he was denied a penalty of his own after tussling with Maya Yoshida, but in truth, it was an unlikely claim for an increasingly desperate Italy, which was struggling to match the intensity of Japan.

And with just over half an hour gone, the Samurai Blue made their superiority count once again. Italy failed to clear a ball into the box, and Kagawa was quickly on it, planting a fine half-volley into the corner.

In fact, Honda could have made it 3-0 moments later from a free kick, but Buffon was on hand this time to make a smart double save to keep the deficit at two.

Italy finally began to wake up as the half neared its end, and it was Andrea Pirlo, as ever, leading its revival, coming close with a wicked free kick that whistled just over the top.

But the Juventus midfielder was deadly accurate with his delivery from a corner in the 41st minute, picking out De Rossi at the near post, who thumped home with his head.

Japan was stunned, and nearly capitulated at the end of the half when Emanuele Giaccherini’s bit of trickery saw him evade his marker but crash the ball off the frame of the goal.

But its resistance lasted little more than five minutes after the restart, as Giaccherini’s pass across the face of goal to Balotelli was reached first by Uchida, who ended up turning the ball into his own net.

And two minutes later, it got even more painful for Japan, when Makoto Hasebe conceded a penalty for an extremely harsh handball call, from which Balotelli, as ever, converted coolly from the spot to put Italy in front for the first time.

Eiji Kawashima was then called into action twice in quick succession to deny Giovinco and De Rossi, and his efforts were rewarded at the other end in the 69th minute, when Okazaki headed home from Yasuhito Endo’s free kick.

But not for the first time, Japan was left cursing its luck when an almighty scramble inside the box saw Okazaki hit the post, before Kagawa's headed follow-up bounced off the floor and smacked off the crossbar.

And in the 86th minute, just when Zaccheroni's men looked like stealing the winner, Italy put the game to bed when De Rossi released Marchisio, who in turn squared for Giovinco to stab high into the back of the net.

Yoshida then had a goal disallowed for offside, and Buffon was forced to tip away from Honda as Japan fought or their lives, but time was no longer on their side as the final whistle signalled the end of its campaign.

Brazil 2-0 Mexico: Neymar's early goal, late assist too much for El Tri

    neymargoalmexico_576x324.jpg

Mexico is out of the FIFA Confederations Cup after a 2-0 loss to host Brazil at Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza on Wednesday.

Neymar's 9th-minute goal and second-half stoppage-time assist to Jo helped increase Brazil's unbeaten streak in competitive matches on home soil to 54 matches.

With two losses in two games, El Tri has been eliminated with a game still to play in the group stage, as Italy's 4-3 victory over Japan sealed Mexico's fate and ensured that both Brazil and Italy will emerge from Group A.

Brazil came out on the front foot and applied early pressure, with Fred's layoff pass deep in the Mexico box having to be dealt with by Gerardo Torrado and Marcelo following that up by winning a free kick deep in Mexico territory. Hulk played the free kick short to Marcelo at the top of the area, but he rolled a low shot right at goalkeeper Jesus Corona.

Moments later, Brazil had a goal waved off, as Neymar was offside prior to playing a cross to the far post for Oscar at the doorstep.

Mexico's first chance came in the 6th minute, with Giovani Dos Santos lofting a left-footed shot from 20 yards but right at Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

Neymar delivered the opener minutes later to recapture the early momentum, as Maza Rodriguez's attempted header to clear Dani Alves' cross landed for the new Barcelona signing inside the area, and he thumped a left-footed volley past Corona for his second goal of the competition.

"I'm happy to have played well again," Neymar said. "But what was more important was that the team had a good performance. We are improving game after game and we are getting better. This gives us more confidence for the next matches."

Alves nearly caught Corona off his line to make it two with a cheeky chip from a right-side angle outside the box in the 14th minute, but the goalkeeper recovered in time to tip it over the bar. Neymar then almost added a second of his own in the 23rd minute, latching onto a ball, taking a touch to round Hiram Mier and then lacing a shot from the edge of the box just over the target.

Chances were few and far between until halftime from then on, save for a ball that Dos Santos nearly put in the far corner from long range in stoppage time.

Brazil had a second goal waved off not even a minute after the restart, as Thiago Silva's tap-in off of a free kick was ruled offside. Paulinho was a step ahead of the back line when laying a short ball off for the PSG center back off Neymar's set piece.

Hulk then missed a glorious opportunity in the 55th minute after a give-and-go combination with Neymar put him alone inside the area. Hulk could have cut a square ball across the six-yard box to one of two wide open attackers or slotted a ball by Corona, but he fired a left-footed blast wide of the mark instead.

Mexico looked to capitalize on the miscue and find the equalizer, but David Luiz came up with an important sliding intervention to prevent a cross from Andres Guardado from reaching Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez by the far post.

In the 65th minute, and with Dos Santos down injured trailing the play, Brazil looked to strike again, as Paulinho completed a 40-yard run down the center of the field before spraying a pass wide left for Neymar, who struck a low shot that Corona saved.

Mexico's last great chance to equalize came through Guarado, who was found by the left post after a tantalizing cross from substitute Pablo Barrera. Alves came up with a deflection to prevent Guardado's close-range shot from being redirected on goal, though, and Neymar came up with the final blow soon after. The Barcelona-bound star split two defenders, carried into the box, and crossed for an unmarked Jo, who capped off the victory with his second goal of the competition.

"Neymar has the skills and he created problems for the players from Mexico the entire match," Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said. "He did what we needed him to do to help us break through the Mexican defense."

Prandelli: Italy did not deserve to win against Japan

    290024_heroa.jpg

The Azzurri boss did not attempt to take many positives from his team's performance, explaining that Italy struggled to cope with the weather and the play of its opponents.Italy coach Cesare Prandelli admitted that his team was fortunate to escape from their Confederations Cup clash against Japan with a 4-3 victory, which wrapped up its spot in the semifinals.

The Azzurri came back from a 2-0 deficit to earn the triumph, but they were lucky to be awarded a penalty after a harsh handball call against Makoto Hasebe, and Japan had a host of near misses in carrying the action for much of the encounter.
Prandelli was left under no illusions as to his side’s good fortune throughout the match, telling reporters: “Against Mexico we deserved [to win], but not today.

“We deserved that game against Mexico, but tonight we [were dealt] a crazy hand. In the first 25 minutes we did not understand what we had to do. There were times we did not play, and we were in trouble.”The Italy boss did pin some of the blame for his team’s display on the sweltering conditions in Recife, Brazil, which he felt prematurely fatigued his team.

“It is really hard to play in this climate,” Prandelli said. “Here it is 80 percent humidity and crazy hot. We recovered [from the opening 25 minutes] but had no gas left.”With the victory, and a place in the last four in the bag, Prandelli chose to focus his attention on preparing his team for the final group game against Brazil, the winner of which will finish in first place in Group A. Brazil would emerge as group winner with a draw by virtue of a better goal differential.

“Now you just have to recuperate ahead of the clash with Brazil,” Prandelli said.

Scolari: Fast start key to victory

The Brazil boss believes his side struggled for long periods against Mexico on Wednesday but prevailed thanks to an early goal.Luiz Felipe Scolari has hailed Brazil's fast start to its 2-0 win over Mexico as they edge ever closer to a place in the Confederations Cup semifinals.

The Selecao were made to work hard for their victory over the North Americans, with Neymar's early goal being followed by a period of Tri dominance before Jo wrapped up all three points late on.

"Our start was fantastic. Then, Mexico turned it around and dominated us for a bit,” Scolari told reporters after the match. "I would say we did very well. The entire team. I believe that the atmosphere from the fans here in Fortaleza spooked Mexico at the beginning of the match."

The former Chelsea coach admitted that the brief loss of David Luiz to injury set the wheels in motion to a sloppy spell at the end of the first half.

"When David Luiz came off, we had problems. There was about a 25-minute stretch where we did not play well,” he added. "In the second half, we adjusted and it was a balanced game. Mexico risked more up front and we did not play as well as we did against Japan."

Brazil wraps up its group campaign with a clash against Italy on June 22.

The new Barcelona signing registered a goal and an assist at the Castelao, but he was in a modest mood, instead hailing the impact of the supporters.Brazil forward Neymar was pleased to have given fans something to cheer during his side's 2-0 FIFA Confederations Cup victory over Mexico on Wednesday.
