    alberto_2962473.jpg

Liverpool have completed the signing of Spanish forward Luis Alberto from Sevilla. The 20-year-old signed a long-term contract with the Premier League side after passing a medical at their Melwood training complex. He spent last season on loan with Barcelona B, scoring 11 goals, and he proved to be a creative force as well, setting up 17 further goals in his 38 appearances.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers said: "We are all delighted that Luis has decided to join Liverpool."He has the correct footballing profile and mentality to be a Liverpool player."I look forward to working with him to develop his talent and he joins a group of young exciting players at our club."

Japan 1-2 Mexico: Hernandez double propels El Tri to victory

    290566hp2.jpg

Mexico ended its Confederations Cup campaign with a 2-1 victory over Japan at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte.

A double from Javier Hernandez in the second half propelled El Tri to a two-goal lead in a game initially dominated by its Asian opponents.

Shinji Okazaki tapped home with four minutes to go to ensure a nervy ending, while Hernandez failed to complete his hat trick, lashing a late penalty against the bar.

With both sides already eliminated from the eight-team tournament, both coaches opted for a couple of changes, with the likes of Guillermo Ochoa handed a start in goal for Mexico, and Hajime Hosogai coming in for the suspended Makoto Hasebe in midfield for Japan.

Alberto Zaccheroni's men might've suffered elimination in a classic encounter against Japan on Wednesday, but they started in the same attacking mindset with Shinji Kagawa forcing Ochoa into a smart save inside five minutes.

Moments later, the Samurai Blue also had a goal disallowed amidst a bright opening. Yasuhito Endo's long-range effort took a slight deflection off Shinji Okazaki and past Ochoa, though the German officials had correctly ruled out the strike.

El Tri took its time to find its rhythm in what was effectively a dead-rubber, but it too created a number of clear-cut opportunities towards the end of what had been up to that point, a rather disappointing first half for the CONCACAF champions. Jorge Torres' superb delivery picked out Andres Guardado, and the Valencia player's free header cannoned off the post, with Eiji Kawashima well beaten.

Jose Manuel de la Torre's men threatened to take a rather undeserved lead though Jesus Zavala's long-range effort, whose pinging effort saw Kawashima almost caught out as the first half ended in a late flurry of action.

El Tri began the second half much more positively and should've taken the lead. Giovani dos Santos cut in from the right and produced a stinging effort which would be brilliantly blocked by Hosogai. From the resulting corner, Raul Jimenez saw his header goalwards thwarted by the goalkeeper.

But Mexico continued the pressure, and was rewarded with the opener with Japan floundering. A fine delivery from the left by Guardado saw Hernandez capitalize on some lax defending to power home on 54 minutes.

Japan showed signs of intent following that setback, and was close to earning a reprieve. Ryoichi Maeda's left-footed drive flashed wide of the post, before Guillermo Ochoa hurriedly denied Shinji Okazaki, but they were to fall further behind once more. Another set piece was flicked on, towards Hernandez, who doubled his tally with an easy header on 66 minutes.

For all of its perseverance, Japan was not to be denied, as Okazaki made it 2-1 with five minutes to go. Kagawa and Endo combined, with the latter squaring for the forward to beat Ochoa finally.

Hernandez had the chance to seal a treble after being pulled down by Atsuto Uchida, but the Man United striker saw his penalty saved by Kawashima, before his rebound crashed off the woodwork in late drama.

Italy 2-4 Brazil: Fred fires Selecao to top spot in Group A

    290585hp2.jpg

Brazil sealed top spot in Confederations Cup Group A with an action-packed 4-2 victory over old rival Italy in Salvador on Saturday night.

The Selecao dominated the opening 45 minutes but only made the breakthrough in injury time at the end of the half, with Dante firing home. Italy drew level in emphatic fashion through Emanuele Giaccherini just after the interval only to see Brazil quickly reassert its supremacy with equally fine strikes from Neymar and Fred.

The Azzurri, though, should have snatched a draw, with an unmarked Christian Maggio heading against the bar shortly after Giorgio Chiellini had dragged Cesare Prandelli's men back into the game, and they were punished for their profligacy by Fred, who netted his second of the game in the dying minutes.

Italy had initially picked up where it had left off against Japan: in complete disarray defensively. Indeed, Brazil twice went close to opening the scoring inside the opening three minutes, with Chiellini making a desperate last-ditch challenge to stop Oscar, before Gianluigi Buffon had to get down well to keep out a low, angled strike from Hulk.

Italy did its utmost to weather the early storm and even carved out an opening on 18 minutes when Claudio Marchisio drove forward down the left wing before pulling the ball back for Mario Balotelli, who badly scuffed his shot, resulting in the easiest of saves for Julio Cesar.

However, Italy was still being overrun in midfield and Cesare Prandelli unsurprisingly elected to make a first-half substitution for the second game in succession, sending Emanuele Giaccherini on in place of Riccardo Montolivo, with the dynamic Marchisio dropping back into midfield alongside Alberto Aquilani.

Sadly, the Azzurri were forced into a second change before the half-hour mark, with Ignazio Abate suffering a shoulder injury after being cynically taken out by Neymar, who, just moments beforehand, had been felled by the AC Milan fullback.

Even the crowd began to get tetchy the longer the half wore but the tension was broken just before the break, with Dante, on as a replacement for the injured David Luiz, exhibiting impressive composure in coolly slotting home the rebound, after Buffon had pulled off a terrific save to keep out a close-range header from Fred.

The second half looked set to continued in much the same vein as the first, with Brazil bossing possession and territory, and the hosts could even have doubled their advantage within a minute of the restart, but Oscar shot too tamely at Buffon, after the ball had dropped for the Chelsea ace on the edge of the area.

However, Italy then leveled out of nowhere. There appeared to be no danger when Buffon punted the ball long, but Antonio Candreva headed it on before Balotelli acrobatically flicked into space for Giaccherini. The much-maligned utility man appeared to hesitate for a second but he then unleashed a blistering drive from just inside the area that gave Julio Cesar no chance.

Order was restored almost immediately, though, with Neymar deceiving Buffon with a terrific free kick, after the Brazilian No.10 had himself been taken down on the edge of the Azzurri box.

Balotelli almost replied in kind on the hour, but his long-range set piece was fumbled away to safety by Julio Cesar. As it was, it was Brazil which struck next in an increasingly chaotic encounter, with Fred finishing in style, after his run in between Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci was expertly picked out by Marcelo.

Italy was not done yet, though, and it set up a frantic finale when the ball dropped for Alberto Aquilani in the six-yard box, allowing him to tee up Chiellini, who scuffed the ball into the bottom left corner of the Selecao goal.

Maggio then crashed a header against the bar as Italy finished the stronger but it was caught cold on the break late on, with Fred on hand to convert after Buffon had been unable to hold onto a shot from Marcelo, meaning the Azzurri will most likely face Spain in the semis.

Del Bosque hails difference in opinion with Xavi

    288027_heroa.jpg

The 62-year-old values his veteran's conflicting views highly, insisting it to be a sign of strength from the midfielder.Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has played down the differences in opinion shared with midfield star Xavi ahead of Sunday's match against Nigeria.

The Barcelona playmaker was believed to be disgruntled with his trainer's decision to rotate the squad for encounters with Uruguay and Tahiti. But Del Bosque insists Xavi did not overstep his authority, declaring he was not at odds with the 33-year-old.

"Unanimity is impossible and it’s quite normal for someone to object or disagree with what we do," Del Bosque said to Onda Cero. "We had made certain plans for the Uruguay game, so we have nothing to worry about.

"Regarding Xavi, we have spoken with him and we have had some disagreements, but he has never named names. It’s not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. The person in charge should have the humility to listen to others."

Del Bosque's words were in line with his assistant Jose Grande's, who earlier told Diario de La Roja: "He [Xavi] has never used his authority at the expense of another player.

"As one of the high-ranking members of the squad, he is able to suggest preferences for certain systems or a way of playing but he has always been respectful. As a player, he is always worried about these kinds of things and has a keen interest in tactics. He would never single out any one player to his detriment."

Victor Valdes will be confirmed between the posts ahead of Iker Casillas in Spain's final Confederations Cup group match, but Grande has reiterated his faith in the Madrid skipper.

"Iker has achieved everything there is to achieve in soccer. Despite his limited number of playing time, an expert player like him is good enough for us," he concluded. "He is going to continue guarding the goal with the same confidence as he always has done. What he has been through has only made him stronger."

Liverpool in complete control of Suarez's future, insists Rodgers

    288665_heroa.jpg

The Anfield boss claims there is "no change" in the Uruguayan's situation and says the club is still in contact with the striker, who is currently at the Confederations Cup.Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant that the club is in complete control of Luis Suarez's future.

The 26-year-old is currently at the Confederations Cup with Uruguay and has publicly voiced his desire to quit the Premier League this summer due to his negative portrayal in the British media. Suarez, who has also claimed he is disturbed by Liverpool's failure to secure Champions League soccer, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but Rodgers says he is relaxed over the Uruguayan's demands.

“It’s quite simple. The club is in complete control of the situation," Rodgers told talkSPORT. “For me there is no real change in it. He’s away with the Uruguay squad at the moment and we’re messaging and what not. I will always listen to players. I always work closely with players and listen to their point of view but the biggest word is with the club.

“Sometimes interviews get put out there and highlighted, but parts of Luis’ interviews have been about how much he loves Liverpool, but of course that doesn’t get highlighted. It’s something that happens. I’m quite relaxed about it.”

Rodgers reiterated that Suarez is a vital part of Liverpool's progression and believes the Uruguayan appreciates the backing from the club's supporters.

“What I know is that the support Luis has had from the people here in Liverpool, the city and the football club, has been phenomenal and I know he feels that and respects that," Rodgers said. “We’re in a situation where we’ve got a player who we don’t want to lose.

"We’re trying to build something here and he’s a very important part of that and because of the type of player he is he will always give his best."

Monreal: Isco has already signed for Madrid

    266339_heroa.jpg

The left back thinks his former club mate has joined the Bernabeu outfit and possesses everything needed to succeed in the capital.Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal believes Malaga star Isco has finalised a deal to join Real Madrid.

The young attacker is the subject of a transfer tug-of-war between los Blancos and Manuel Pellegrini's Manchester City, with both teams vying for his signature to rebuild following failed title bids.

And Monreal, who played alongside Isco between 2011 to 2013 at La Rosaleda, says his compatriot has snubbed Pellegrini's approaches for a move to the Bernabeu.

"Isco has succeeded wherever he has gone. I believe he has already signed for Real Madrid and I'm sure he'll do very well because he is a great player," the 27-year-old told Marca. "He may cost them, but together they will have opportunities and they will seize them."

A likely victim of los Blancos' revolution will be Gonzalo Higuain who has been tipped to join Arsenal this summer, with Monreal welcoming the striker to the Emirates with open arms.

"I would love it. Higuain is a part of soccer, and I always loved how he played for Real Madrid. He is a scorer and would be a reinforcement that we could really use," he continued. "Arsenal is one of the biggest teams in England and this summer it is working towards good signings to break that [trophy-less] streak."

Despite not being a permanent fixture under former coach Jose Mourinho, Higuain still scored 16 goals in 28 Liga appearances as Madrid finished second last term.

The Argentine's goal record is also understood to have made him a target of Juventus.

Dante: I dreamed I'd score against Italy

    290575_heroa.jpg

The Bayern Munich defender was thrilled to net on his return to Bahia and is optimistic of the Selecao's chances of retaining the Confederations Cup Brazil defender Dante was delighted to get on the scoresheet on the return to his hometown as he helped Luiz Felipe Scolari's side finished top of Confederations Cup Group A with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Italy.

The Bayern Munich star replaced David Luiz, who suffered a dead leg in the first half, and opened the scoring for the South American nationon the stroke of halftime.

Speaking to reporters after the game, the 29-year-old expressed his happiness at scoring in front of his family.

He said: "It seems like a joke, but it isn't. I was dreaming about this [scoring against Italy, in Bahia].

"I bought 60 tickets for my family, so there's a lot of people there who came here to see me. I wanted to show them something, show something to my family and to everyone else who came here to see us."

Dante produced a solid defensive display to keep AC Milan forward Mario Balotelli at bay and was complimentary towards his opponent.

"Balotelli is one of the greatest center forwards in the world. He gets out of the box a lot, so we had to watch out for him. But the important thing is that the team played really well."

Brazil will most likely face Uruguay in the semi-finals and Dante is convinced that the Selecao can retain their Confederations Cup title.

"The most important thing is that we're well aware that we need to beat everyone if we want to be champions. So we don't choose who we want next," he continued. "We have to continue the way we are, with our heads held high, working hard in order to get more victories."

Fred: I am so happy to end drought

    290372_heroa.jpg

The Fluminense striker was delighted to end a barren run with two goals as Brazil rounded off Group A of the Confederations with a resounding victory over Italy
Nobody will have been as relieved as Fred following Brazil's 4-2 Confederations Cup win over Italy on Saturday, as the 28-year-old netted two goals - his first of the tournament.

His second-half brace helped Luiz Felipe Scolari's team to a deserved victory which sends the Selecao through as Group A winners, in a tournament which could offer to take some pressure of the national team's shoulders, if it can succeed.

"I have to thank God, in the first place, and my teammates, Felipão, to the physiotherapy guys, who were really tough on me and got me 100 percent fit again," Fred admitted to reporters. "I was really bothered with the lack of goals, but I kept on working hard and I always felt the trust the lads passed on to me. Thank God everyone worked out, with the victory and the goals."

"When i said that [that I wanted to score one goal per game] it was because I wanted to score lots of goals. To a center forward, it is always important to play well. If you can't score, then at least assist, and today I got this present of a great match. I'm really happy," he said.

Fred also was keen to admit how he relished participating in such a fixture, as Brazil looks to be getting more clinical and cohesive as the tournament progresses.

"I love important games. The more decisive, the better. With the love from the fans, the support of our family, everyone here to watch us, it was really special for us," he beamed.

Tottenham reaches deal with Corinthians to land Paulinho
    289417_heroa.jpg

The Brazil international will join Spurs after the Confederations Cup on a four-year deal, with the club holding the option for a one-year extension Tottenham has agreed on a 20 million euro deal to sign Brazilian midfielder Paulinho from Corinthians.

The Brazil international will join Spurs after the Confederations Cup on a four-year contract, with the Londoners holding the option for a one-year extension.

Spurs will pay 17.6m euros for the 24-year-old with a further 2.4m euros in potential add-ons for the powerful midfielder, who has a 20m euro release clause in his Corinthians contract.

Paulinho will not put pen to paper with Tottenham until after the Confederations Cup and is still to complete a medical, but the transfer is now considered a formality by those involved in the deal.

Inter and Shakhtar Donetsk had also shown a strong interest in Paulinho but Spurs emerged as Paulinho’s preferred destination and were the only club to meet Corinthians’ demands.

Corinthians director of football Edu, the former Arsenal player, confirmed on Friday that negotiations were “well underway” between the clubs after a week of talks, with an agreement being reached on Saturday morning.

The player’s former club, Audax-SP, will receive 50 percent of the transfer fee and have also approved the transfer.

Paulinho has expressed a desire to move to Europe and will join up with international teammate Sandro in north London, while he is understood to have personally spoken to Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas.

Goal revealed on Tuesday that Tottenham was confident of landing Paulinho, who is also highly regarded by Franco Baldini, the club’s newly appointed technical director.

Once Paulinho’s arrival is complete, Spurs will turn their attention to bolstering their strike force as they look to mount a challenge for a top-four finish next season.

Barcelona star David Villa is the north Londoners’ top target while they are also considering a move for Valencia forward Roberto Soldado.

Villa’s wage demands of 164,000 euros a week have been a stumbling block but Spurs believe they are in a strong position to land Spain’s all-time leading scorer after the Confederations Cup.

The 31-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract at the Camp Nou and Tottenham is hopeful of persuading Barcelona to reduce its 14m euro asking price.

Villas-Boas: I'm friends with Paris Saint-Germain's president but I'm staying at Tottenham

    278347_heroa.jpg

The 35-year-old, who says he is looking forward to facing Jose Mourinho next season, snubbed a lucrative offer from the French champions to remain at White Hart Lane Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas admits he regularly speaks with Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi but insists he will remain at White Hart Lane this summer.

Goal revealed in June that the 35-year-old rejected a lucrative approach from the French champions, who were prepared to meet a 11.7 million euro buyout clause in the Portuguese's contract in order to secure a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Carlo Ancelotti.

"I have had a friendship for some time with the president of PSG. He is a friend, [we] speak regularly but my commitment is with Tottenham," Villas-Boas told A Bola. "It was the club that allowed me to return to the Premier League and I feel good there."

Villas-Boas, who nearly guided Tottenham to Champions League football last season, expects to be backed in the transfer market this summer but another reason for his stay is due to the anticipation of facing Jose Mourinho, who he worked under at Porto, Chelsea and Inter.

"It will be special to play against Chelsea, particularly against a person who was instrumental in my career. It will be great to meet Mourinho," said Villas-Boas.

Giggs calls Barcelona midfielder Thiago is a 'big talent'

    289475_heroa.jpg

The Welshman claims he has watched the Barcelona midfielder in several games but is unsure whether the 22-year-old will be arriving at Old Trafford this summer
Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has labelled Thiago as a "big talent" but remained coy over reports linking the Barcelona player with a move to Old Trafford.

Goal revealed in May that the 22-year-old is one of David Moyes' transfer targets this summer, while United goalkeeper David de Gea has admitted he would love his fellow Spaniard to join him in the Premier League.

"I've seen him in several games," Giggs told Marca. "He's a good player. But there's always a lot of speculation with United and good players. We'll see if it happens in the end, but he's a big talent."

Giggs went on to praise Spain's dominant national side, and believes the Under-21s triumph over Italy in the European Championship this month demonstrates that the country's run at the top could be extended for a number of years.

"The Spain team is full of great players like Fabregas, Iniesta and Xavi," he continued. "They're great when they have the ball at their feet.

"They've been a top team for the last six or seven years. Then the Under-21s are the ones who will come next. There is quality at every level and I think the success will continue for a long time."

Giggs has now been at Old Trafford for 26 years and, as he approaches 40, is now contemplating his future after he retires.

"A mixture of things [help prolong your career]," the 39-year-old added. "Firstly hard work, then being managed by a great manager for such a long time and then being surrounded by good players. You also have to look after your body and be mentally strong. You have to be motivated.

"Yes, [the end of my career] is very close. I still haven't decided what I want to do when I retire. Coach, manage the youngsters, become a manager - who knows. I want to be better prepared. I will decide in two or three years, when I'm ready."

    Soldado dreaming of Brazil-Spain final

The Roja striker wants to keep working hard and help his side reach the Confederations Cup final at the Maracana to fulfill a childhood dream
Spain striker Roberto Soldado says he is eager to face host Brazil in the Confederations Cup final at the Maracana.

The Roja have won both of their games to date, edging out Uruguay 2-1 before thrashing Tahiti 10-0 and the Valencia skipper is already thinking of the tournament's showpiece.

"A cool thing would be facing Brazil in the final," he told Marca. "I think we all dream of experiencing that moment on the Maracana pitch when you are a child.

"We have not done anything yet in this tournament. We have to work hard to work hard to reach the final."

After playing Euro 2012 with midfielder Cesc Fabregas filling in up front, Spain have been using an orthodox striker in Brazil.

Soldado started the first game against Uruguay, opening the scoring early on, with David Villa and Fernando Torres playing the Tahiti fixture and the 28-year-old is delighted at the tactical switch.

"The debate is difficult to forget. I'm sure that we'll return to playing as a false No.9 because it has worked," he continued. "Last year I had the misfortune of staying at home. Now I've have the chance to experience the national team from within, to start in the first game and enjoy it.

"I'm calm and eager to continue doing well. I always want to show what I've got in me. It's what I do at Valencia and what I try to do with the national team. I hope more goals will come."

David Villa's agent: Fiorentina has an interesting project

    283704_heroa.jpg

Recent reports have linked the Barcelona forward with a move to Tuscany and his representative says that his client would not be averse to a Serie A switch Fiorentina has an "interesting project", according to the agent of Barcelona forward David Villa.

Reports in Spain have suggested that the Viola are looking to bring the 31-year-old to the Artemio Franchi along with Blaugrana youngster Jonathan Dos Santos.

And while Victor Onate has stressed that there is no concrete interest from the Tuscan side, he is a keen admirer of the club's recent work.

"I think it is excessive to say there is formal interest from Fiorentina but we know the type of interesting project they have in mind," he told Tuttomercatoweb."I worked with current Fiorentina technical director Eduardo Macia at Valencia. We are friends and in constant communication. Fiorentina had a good season and their intention is to grow even more."

"David is focused on the Confederations Cup. Leaving a club like Barcelona is not easy and it depends on many factors, including next year’s World Cup, as clearly he wants to approach it as a protagonist.

"If he does leave, we are looking for an important project that will allow him to play at a high level. England or Italy makes no difference, as long as the project is good."

Villa has one year left on his contract at Camp Nou.

The creative midfielder has revealed that he has already discussed a potential summer move to the Portuguese champions with fellow Brazilian Hulk Brazil international Bernard has admitted that he is flattered by Porto's interest, but has stressed that he does not have a preference as to his next destination.

The Atletico Mineiro midfielder is continually being linked with a move to Europe, with clubs such as Borussia Dortmund, Tottenham Hotspur and the Portuguese champions all closely monitoring his situation, and a move to the Dragao could prove to be too tempting to turn down.

"I do not really have a preference. The European transfer window is open at the moment and I have also been linked with other good clubs," he told A Bola.

"But Porto are a very good club, with a great structure and are always in the Champions League. I am proud to be linked to a club like that.

"When I heard about Porto's interest, the first name that came to mind was Hulk. I have spoken with him and he's told me all about Porto.

"He's assured me that Porto are a big club who are run very well. He said nothing but wonderful things."

The 20-year-old has a contract with Atletico Mineiro until 2017.

Cazorla tips Arsenal for trophy haul next season
    257808_heroa.jpg

The Spaniard is confident the Gunners can keep improving following their stunning end of season form that saw them secure Champions League football for the 16th consecutive season Arsenal playmaker Santi Cazorla believes the club is on the cusp of ending its eight-year trophy drought and has backed Arsene Wenger's side to push on and secure silverware next season.

The Gunners are moving quickly to strengthen ahead of the new campaign and are on the verge of sealing a move for Gonzalo Higuain having already activating Marouane Fellaini's release clause.

Cazorla believes the future is looking bright for the north London outfit and sees no reason why the club cannot stop the slide of recent years and challenge for honors following their stunning form in 2013.

"When the team does not win and we do not get the results we want, the collective confidence does drop a little and that is natural," the Spain international was quoted in the Daily Star. "Now we have put in a spectacular run-in and you can see the difference in mentality. We have great players. I am sure we will be a better team and improve.

"This season we hope we can be even better and win trophies and the supporters can enjoy it. That is what Arsenal really wants."

Cazorla scored 12 goals and added a further 12 assists in his maiden season in the Premier League following his 19 million euros move from Malaga last summer.
