'We have started very well' - Alves salutes emphatic Barcelona start

    204183hp2.jpg

Barcelona right back Dani Alves praised a positive start to the La Liga season after his side ran out the 5-1 victor over Real Sociedad at Camp Nou.

"We have started very well, and in the league it is always important to start well. Our team was very organized from the first minute," he told Barca TV.

In Tito Vilanova's first competitive match in charge, the Blaugrana were quickly ahead through a Carles Puyol header, before being briefly pegged back to 1-1 by a fine Gonzalo Castro strike. But soon after, goals from Lionel Messi, Pedro and David Villa wrapped up a comprehensive victory.

"We reacted quickly to their goal and were able to put the game beyond reach, but the team will have to work on its physical shape as the season goes on," Alves added.

Commenting on Vilanova himself, Alves praised the consistency that the new coach has brought to the dressing room.

"We said we would not change anything, our philosophy is the same, just with somebody else giving the instruction," he said.

Having surrendered their La Liga crown to Real Madrid last year, Alves is clear on the team's objectives for the coming season.

"Last year we had many accidents, and we weren't competitive enough in the league. Tonight was an important moment and will boost the team's morale."

    Manchester United move for Buttner

    buttner_2790914.jpg

Vitesse Arnhem's Alexander Buttner has revealed that he is set to seal a 'dream' move to Manchester United. Southampton, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers have all made bids for the 23-year-old - but now it appears he is on his way to Old Trafford in a shock move.

Left-back Buttner, who was included in Holland's preliminary squad for Euro 2012, now appears to be closing on a move to England with the deal reportedly worth €5million (£3.9million).

Speaking to regional tv station Omroep Gelderland Buttner admitted he was about to seal his 'dream' move."This is really a dream come true," he said.

"It was all arranged very quickly and of course I am very delighted. Happily everything is coming to an end."Buttner has been in dispute with Vitesse over his attempts to seal a move away from the club, and had even taken his case to the KNVB (Dutch FA) - but now he looks to have got his wish of a move away from the Gelredome.

United had long been linked with a new left-back with Everton's Leighton Baines believed to be Sir Alex Ferguson's top target - but now it seems Buttner is the man he wants to provide competition for Patrice Evra.

The Old Trafford club are still to comment on the Buttner situation.

    Song completes Barca move

    Song completes Barca move

    alexsongbarcelonaarrival20120820_576x324.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Alex Song has completed his move to Barcelona, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Camp Nou.

Song, 24, underwent tests with the Barcelona medical team, which he easily passed, allowing him to complete a long-awaited move on Monday afternoon.

Barca doctor Ricard Pruna told the club's official website: "He has a very low level of body-fat and a very good muscular quality. I do not think he has had a muscle injury since he was 17 years old. That is good news. All the tests went well and he is available for the coach."The Cameroon midfielder has been at Emirates Stadium since 2005, but his desire for a new challenge has seen him lured to Barcelona for a fee of around €19 million.

He is expected to provide back-up for Sergio Busquets in defensive midfielder as new manager Tito Vilanova looks to strengthen the depth of his squad, while he can also play at centre-back and provide some creativity from midfield. The midfielder was delighted to complete his move, telling Barca TV: "Today is a very good day for me and my family. Very happy to be here, this is the best team in the world, playing at a club like Barga is something I wanted when I was young.

"I hope the team will continue to win, this is a winning team. They win everything. I will give my best on training and when I get the chance to play I will do it.''And Song believes former Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas will help him settle at the Nou Camp.

"I know Cesc very well, I slept at his house last night,'' he added. "He's a very good friend of mine, he will help me to integrate.''

Everton 1-0 Manchester United: Rampant Fellaini ruins Kagawa and Van Persie debuts

    204488hp2.jpg

Manchester United's Premier League campaign got off to a difficult start at Goodison Park as Everton took all three points with a 1-0 win courtesy of a second-half header from Marouane Fellaini.

Ahead of the game the big team news concerned the visitors with Robin van Persie named on the bench but Shinji Kagawa handed his Premier League debut. Elsewhere defensive problems were evident with Antonio Valencia at right back and Michael Carrick partnering Nemanja Vidic in central defense.

Everton, meanwhile, also named one of its summer signings in the starting lineup and another on the bench. Steven Pienaar was given the nod in midfield, with Steven Naismith having to wait for his first Premier League start.

An entertaining first half at Goodison Park saw plenty of chances for both sides with the hosts enjoying the better opportunities and ensuring David de Gea had a busy evening in the United goal.

Marouane Fellaini was at the heart of all of Everton’s best play and the Belgium international went close just after the 10 minute mark, controlling a throw from Leighton Baines, turning past Valencia and surging past Carrick but unable to beat De Gea who touched his effort onto the post.

Ten minutes later and Everton went close again. Some quick, one-touch passing proving too good for United and finding Nikica Jelavic inside the box and at a tight angle but again unable to beat De Gea.

From the ensuing corner, De Gea managed to punch clear but only as far as Pienaar on the edge of the box and his firm header was touched over again by the Spaniard.

The pressure from the home side was increasing and De Gea was once more called into action just after the half hour mark. A curling Baines effort forced the Spaniard to dive low, but he could only parry the ball which fell to Fellaini who fired the ball across goal and wide.

However, United was creating chances of its own and Rooney twice forced Tim Howard into saves. Firstly from a low free kick that beat the wall and was heading for the bottom corner before the American tipped it wide and then with a snap shot after a good cross from Evra. Unfortunately for the England international, it was straight at the former Manchester United goalkeeper who collected it gratefully.

As the half drew to a close Everton again went ramped up the pressure and almost managed to take a lead into the break. With five minutes left on the clock Leon Osman, on the turn, forced De Gea into another superb save before a Baines free kick again saw the goalkeeper turning it away impressively at full stretch.

The second half began in much the same vein with the hosts rattling United’s crossbar within minutes of the restart. A cross from Tony Hibbert was knocked down by Fellaini to Osman who thundered a shot onto the crossbar.

With the woodwork still shuddering, United broke quickly down field, working the ball swiftly to Danny Welbeck on the edge of the box, and about to shoot, until he was denied by a perfectly timed tackled from Jagielka.

However, just minutes shy of the hour mark, the goal Everton had been threatening all night finally came. A corner from the right found Fellaini, who out-jumped Carrick and thundered a header past De Gea, for a goal his performance had fully merited.

The visitors responded by sending Van Persie out to warm up, but minutes later Fellaini was tormenting the United defense again, heading straight at De Gea who was able to hold onto his effort.

Back came the visitors with the increasingly lively Kagawa teeing up Cleverley in the box, with Howard out of his goal, but his shot was hacked off the line by Jagielka.

That miss saw the introduction of Van Persie on 67 minutes, replacing Welbeck as the Red Devils chased an equaliser and he was swiftly followed by Ashley Young, on for the disappointing Nani.

With 10 minutes to go Van Persie slid in an enticing low cross for Kagawa, that had the United fans on their feet, but he was just beaten to the ball by Howard at his near post.

With time running out the visitors continued to press, inevitably, but Everton held firm, even allowing Fellaini to depart late on to a standing ovation, to pick up a deserved three points and leave Manchester United with plenty to ponder.

Barcelona 5-1 Real Sociedad: Villa returns from injury with a goal

    204185hp2.jpg

The Tito Vilanova era at Barcelona began with help from a familiar face, as Lionel Messi led the Blaugrana to a 5-1 win over Real Sociedad in its Primera Division season opener at Camp Nou on Sunday. Mexican international Carlos Vela played 25 minutes in the loss.

As Real Madrid stumbled to an early 1-1 draw against Valencia earlier, Vilanova picked up where predecessor Pep Guardiola left off, dominating the beleaguered visitor for large periods to clinch an emphatic home victory.

Carles Puyol's header gave Barca the lead after four minutes, only for Chory Castro to restore parity with an opportunistic finish moments later. But then Messi took over, scoring a pair of poacher's efforts in the 11th and 16th minutes to give the Catalans a lead they would never relinquish.

Pedro added the fourth just before half time, and Barca's perfect beginning to the season was completed by the return of David Villa from injury, who scored the fifth and final goal six minutes from the end.

    davidvillamo.jpg

Vilanova was not the only debutant for Barca, as Jordi Alba, the 14 million euro signing from Valencia, was handed a start at left back. Sociedad’s own new recruit Chory Castro began up front, but fellow summer signings Carlos Vela and Jose Angel had to settle for a place on the bench.

It took the Catalans only four minutes to break the deadlock, though the goal came, for them, in somewhat unconventional fashion. A corner from Xavi was thumped in by the head of Puyol to send the hosts in front.

Sociedad was straight back down the pitch. Asier Illarramendi slipped a clever pass just in front of Dani Alves, putting Castro through, where he had the time to take a touch and bury his finish high into the roof of the net after.

But just as Sociedad was able to hit back after conceding, so too did Barcelona, which regained the lead within two minutes of restarting the match. Messi’s uncharacteristically poor touch spilled a decent cross from Tello, but Pedro worked the rebound back into the Argentine, who wriggled through his markers and slotted home.

Messi’s instincts came to the fore moments later, the forward reacting quickest to a Tello center to drill the Blaugrana into a 3-1 lead, all after 16 minutes. With a two goal cushion, the hosts settled into their typical monopolization of possession, suffocating Sociedad in its own half with large periods of metronomic passing.

Barcelona was always in control, and, with four minutes to go until half time, it added a fourth in emphatic and enthralling fashion. Messi, Xavi and Fabregas were all involved in a build-up that split Sociedad in two, with the decisive ball worked to Tello on the left, who centered to Pedroto stroke into the far corner.

Sociedad set up for a damage-limitation exercise in the second half, though Antoine Griezmann snatched at an early opening as he fired wide from a good position.

However, the focus was always at the other end of the pitch, and an outstanding one-touch sequence between Messi and Pedro ended with the former blasting his finish into the side netting when he should have hit the target.

The home fans were in jubilant spirits, which were kicked up a notch by the introduction of Villa for Pedro with a quarter of an hour to go, the Spain striker making his long awaited return from a broken tibia last December. And Villa did not miss a beat, finishing a mazy run from Iniesta with aplomb in the 84th minute to round off a picture-perfect start to the new season for Barcelona.

AC Milan and Inter agree terms over Pazzini-Cassano swap

    204549hp2.jpg

AC Milan and Inter have reached an agreement over a player-exchange deal involving Giampaolo Pazzini and Antonio Cassano, Goal.com can confirm.

On top of the inclusion of the 30-year-old Cassano in the transfer, Milan will also pay their arch-rivals a fee of 7 million euros for the services of former Fiorentina star Pazzini.

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani recently revealed that both clubs were in talks, and they have now come to a conclusion after further meetings on Monday.

Galliani met with Pazzini's agent Tullio Tinti in the afternoon to discuss a three-year deal worth 2.8m euros per season plus bonuses, before visiting Inter chiefs Massimo Moratti and Marco Branca in the early evening to iron out the exact details of the moves.

Beppe Bozzo, Cassano's agent, will meet with Inter on Tuesday to talk about a contract until June 2014, worth 3m euros per annum.

"We have to yet finalize the deal, but who wouldn't like a player such as Cassano?" asked Moratti when questioned by reporters on the imminent transfer.

Pazzini, 28, will travel to Milanello on Tuesday afternoon to undergo his medical at the Rossoneri, and the deal could be concluded by the end of the day.
