Nurnberg 1-1 Dortmund: Kuba rescues point for champions

    207027hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund's uneasy start to the new season continued on Saturday, as it could only muster a 1-1 draw at Nurnberg in the Bundesliga.

Tomas Pekhart made Jurgen Klopp's charges pay for their scrappy start to proceedings on the half-hour mark with a bullet header, but Jakob Blaszczykowski's immediate reply ensured his side were entitled to a share of the spoils.

The opening stages of the match were extremely cagey, as both sides set their stalls for the afternoon. Nurnberg, who picked up a surprise win at Hamburg on the opening matchday last week, struggled to impose themseleves early on.

Meanwhile, Dortmund, who kicked off the new campaign with defeat in the DFL-Supercup and a slender victory over Werder Bremen, kept much of the ball in the initial spells, but lacked the final pass as Sebastian Kehl and Ilkay Gundogan came closest.

However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock inside the first 32 minutes. An outswinging corner from Hiroshi Kiyotake met Pekhart, who jumped highest in the box to nod Nurnberg into the lead against the reigning champion.

But its advantage was short-lived. Only eight minutes later, Marcel Schmelzer's cross caused all sorts of panic in the home side's box, as Robert Lewandowski's saved header and Ivan Perisic's crossbar effort allowed Kuba to sweep up the rebound.

The second half promised much more for Nurnberg, who did not let Dortmund's equalizer ruin its momentum, and it was they who provided the best of the opportunism.

Robert Mak was a thorn for the champions' defense for much of the latter period, as he tried hard to force a second. The attacker saw a strike hit the post after a mazy run, while a penalty appeal was turned down, despite Lukasz Piszczek seeming guilty of a foul.

Suddenly, Dortmund was presented with valid chances of its own. Firstly, Mats Hummels saw a goal-bound header cleared off the line by the dependable Javier Pinola, before substitute Julian Schieber let fly a stinging shot, stopped by Raphael Schafer.

Klopp threw on the likes of Mario Gotze and Kevin Grosskreutz in a bid to salvage all three points at Stadion Nurnberg, but it was not to be Dortmund's day. The Ruhmreiche, however, will be pleased to continue their unbeaten start.

Swansea City 2-2 Sunderland: 10-man hosts complete comeback after Fletcher double

    207033hp2.jpg

Swansea's winning start to the season was checked by Sunderland after the side's played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium.

After a dull opening half an hour, Steven Fletcher latched on to Ashley Williams' slack back-pass to strike on his league debut but Wayne Routledge's thumping effort equalized just six minutes later before the Scot bundled home a second just before the half-time whistle.

After intense second-half pressure the home side equalized through Michu and managed to hold on to a point, despite Chico's sending off.

Michael Laudrup's side were unchanged from their 3-0 win over West Ham last time out in the league while the Black Cats gave Premier League debuts to Steven and Adam Johnson.

The Swans dominated the early going without threatening, but were dealt a blow after 20 minutes as Neil Taylor was forced off with a nasty-looking ankle injury picked up in a challenge with Craig Gardner, and was replaced by youngster Ben Davies.

Both sides struggled to find a breakthrough and Sunderland were forced into a change of their own after 38 minutes as Lee Cattermole was replaced by David Meyler after picking up a dead leg in a clash with Routledge.

With the game meandering towards half-time the away side struck out of nowhere, Williams attempted a first-time back-pass to Vorm but only scuffed his effort into the path of Fletcher who raced towards goal and finished coolly past the Dutchman.

The game suddenly sprung into life and after James McClean volleyed over the Swans found themselves level. After a patient build-up on the edge of Sunderland's area, Nathan Dyer sprung into life, chipping a delightful ball into the path of Routledge who smashed past Simon Mignolet.

Six minutes of added time had been added on due to the game's injuries and it was enough time for the Black Cats to regain the lead. Chico looked to clear Sebastian Larsson's deep free kick to the back post but he was charged down by Fletcher and the ball was bundled in by a combination of the two players.

The Swans came out for the second half on the attack, Leon Britton hit an effort over from eight yards from a well-worked corner before Mignolet was called upon to keep out a fierce Dyer effort at his near post.

Laudrup's side continued pushing on and went close again on the hour. Mignolet could only palm Jonathan de Guzman's free kick into the path of Angel Rangel but the Belgian recovered well to keep the right-back's follow-up out and the ball was cleared.

Michu was then guilty of wasting a gilt-edged chance, the Spaniard heading into the ground and over from 10 yards when it looked easier to score, but the former Raye Vallecano man soon made up for his miss.

De Guzman was given too much room deep in midfield and swung a perfect ball onto the head of Michu who planted his headed effort past Mignolet for a richly deserved Swans equalizer.

Martin O'Neill responded by replacing the tiring Fletcher with Louis Saha and the Frenchman was immediately into the thick of the action as Chico made a wild, head-high lunge at the Frenchman, and was sent off, despite making minimal contact with the Frenchman.

Michael Laudrup brought on Alan Tate for Routledge in order to shore up the defense, with just under 15 minutes remaining in the match.

The Swans controlled the game out for much of the rest of the match and could have snatched a point as Michu scrambled an effort in the six-yard box but the Black Cats held out for a point.

Tottenham 1-1 Norwich City: Dembele debut strike not enough due to Snodgrass stunner

    207034hp2.jpg

A debut goal from Mousa Dembele wasn't enough to claim three points at White Hart Lane on Saturday as Robert Snodgrass' late goal pegged back ten-man Tottenham and claimed a much deserved point for Norwich in a 1-1 draw.

Spurs improved on a flat first half performance to take the lead through an excellent Dembele strike but Norwich, who hit the bar in opening stages, found the resolve to hit back with five minutes to go – dramatically equalising. The hosts found further woe as Tom Huddlestone received his marching orders for a foul on Steve Morison.

Andre Villas-Boas named the same starting XI that drew 1-1 with WBA last weekend as Dembele took his place on the bench, while Chris Hughton also stuck with the same side that claimed its first point of the season against QPR.

Tottenham's late transfer window additions Clint Dempsey and Hugo Lloris were left out of the lineup against Norwich.

Though Norwich were pressing for the crucial opening goal, it was a moment of brilliance from Dembele that put Villas-Boas' side in front.

The Belgian initially sent Defoe too wide with his pass but was found by the striker on the edge of the box. A clever stepover and turn later, Dembele had the ball on his left-foot and enough space to fire low and hard into Ruddy's far corner.

But that was not enough to suppress Norwich and the introduction of Morison for Jackson almost yielded an immediate response as Assou-Ekotto tangled with the Welshman in the box. Mark Halsey was perhaps a little lenient to wave play on.

This did not deter the Canaries though and with five minutes to go, they drew level. A deep cross was headed back into the middle of the box by Martin and kept alive by Holt, whose header fell at the feet of the impressive Snodgrass. The summer signing guided the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to record his first goal in a Norwich shirt and send the away fans into raptures.

With time ticking away, Huddlestone, who had come on just before the equalizer for Defoe, lunged into a 50/50 challenge with Morison on the halfway line. Although the tackle was late and did not appear overly dangerous, Halsey deemed it worthy of a red-card, reducing Spurs to ten men for the final stages.

With four minutes added on and Tottenham surprisingly pressing for a winner, Hughton's side almost sucker-punched the hosts as the ball fell to Johnson on the edge of the box. Fortunately, Fridel was alert enough to parry to safety, closing a dramatic and ultimately fruitless half for Spurs.

The Canaries played with a confidence and intensity that set the tone for the game. Spurs, meanwhile, looked as if they had spent last night alongside chairman Daniel Levy trying to conclude early morning deals. It was a lackadaisical and stale performance and in truth, they were fortunate to emerge with a point.

Wigan 2-2 Stoke City: Crouch rescues point for Pulis's side

    207031hp2.jpg

Stoke twice fought back from a goal down to claim a point against Wigan after a tremendous 2-2 draw at the DW Stadium.

Shaun Maloney's penalty gave Wigan an early lead after Robert Huth handballed James McCarthy's goalbound effort inside the first five minutes.

Despite dominating the first-half, Stoke were handed a way back into the game after Maynor Figueroa blatantly handled in the area, and Jonathan Walters tucked away the penalty five minutes before half-time.

Wigan was back in front just three minutes after the break though, with Franco Di Santo's fine finish capping an excellent move from the Lancashire club.

Stoke, however, would not give up and deservedly hit back for a second time through Peter Crouch, who headed home after being set up by Walters.

Charlie Adam almost made the headlines after his free-kick was horribly deflected goalbound by Gary Caldwell, but a fine save from Ali-Al Habsi saved a point for The Latics.

Wigan was keen to build on its impressive 2-0 victory at St Mary's last weekend, and started brighty as it sought to control possession in the early stages, stroking the ball around the back four.

But with their first real attacking move of the game, the deadlock was broken as The Latics edged ahead after just four minutes.

Franco Di Santo received the ball on the left and played into the Stoke area to the arriving James McCarthy, who struck a powerful effort which hit the outstretched arm of Robert Huth, and despite Stoke's protest that it was unintentional, referee Martin Atkinson had no choice other than to point to the spot.

Shaun Maloney stepped up for the penalty, and coolly slotted it into the bottom right-hand corner, sending Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic the wrong way to give the hosts an early lead at the DW Stadium.

Wigan received a slight blow with Beausejour seeing his afternoon cut short after going down on the left and landing awkwardly, with Martinez forced to replace him with David Jones just before the half-hour mark.

Stoke did then have the ball in the net a few minutes later but the whistle had already gone, with Jonathan Walters adjudged to have fouled Wigan keeper Ali Al-Habsi as the ball rolled into the net, meeting with a sarcastic cheer from the home fans who were enjoying the afternoon.

Just minutes later, Figueroa was again in the limelight for the wrong reasons, and the Honduras international will be disappointed with his part in Stoke's equalizing goal.

The ball came to Peter Crouch in the area, and the former Tottenham striker juggled the ball before looping it in the air. Figueroa's feeble attempt to block the pass from Crouch was then to prove costly as it struck his arm, with Atkinson again showing no hesitation pointing straight to the spot.

Walters stepped up for the spot-kick, and despite Al-Habsi choosing the right way, the Irish international's penalty was well-struck into the bottom right-hand corner to draw Stoke level.

Stoke's change in tactics looked to give them a new-found belief, and defender Marc Wilson had two golden chances to give Stoke an unlikely lead.

First, his well-struck volley was deflected onto the crossbar, and from the subsequent corner, met the ball at the front post, narrowly heading over as a pulsating end-to-end first-half came to a close.

The second-half started the same way as the first, with a goal for Wigan after some excellent play from Arouna Kone and Di Santo.

Di Santo broke down the right-hand side after Wigan cleared Stoke's set piece, and played a brilliant ball down the line to Kone. The Ivorian came under pressure and the chance looked to have gone but kept his composure to square to Di Santo, who placed an incisive finish past the helpless Begovic to put Wigan back in front.

Stoke were shellshocked by Wigan's goal and immediately searched to equalize for a second time, with Walters threatening to add to his tally, firing just past the post.

After fading slightly towards the end of the first half, Maloney sprung into action, dribbling well down the left-hand side before finding Jones. His shot was deflected towards Boyce, but couldn't direct his effort on target as Wigan looked to consolidate their lead.

Stoke, however, had other ideas, and Michael Kightly spurned a brilliant opportunity to level when Crouch found him unmarked in the box, but the summer signing from Wolves didn't connect well with the volley. The North East outfit were starting to get back into the game.

And after scoring from the penalty spot in the first half, Walters turned provider to hand Stoke a deserved equalizer after stepping up a gear.

A flick on from substitute Cameron Jerome played in Walters down the left-hand side of the penalty area, and his floated ball found the towering Crouch, who nodded past Al-Habsi to set up an exciting final 15 minutes.

The Potters could've got in front the first time when Jerome broke through on goal bursting with pace, striking a low effort which Al-Habsi did well to parm away, and Caldwell made a heroic block to deny Crouch.

Without doubt chance of the game then fell to debutant Adam as he lined up the free-kick from 25 yards out. The Scot curled an effort which took a wicked deflection and looked to be heading towards the goal, until the wrong-footed Al-Habsi flung himself to make a sensational save to keep the scores level.

Miyachi then raced into the Stoke penalty area and looked to have a chance on goal until Ryan Shawcross executed a perfect challenge, and despite the appeals of the young Arsenal loanee for a penalty, Atkinson was not prepared to point to the spot for a third time.

With three minutes added on, both sides looked to clinch a late winner, but after a pulsating encounter at the DW Stadium, both sides were content to come away with a point.

West Brom 2-0 Everton: Long and McAuley keep Baggies' early season run going

    207038hp2.jpg

Shane Long and Gareth McAuley grabbed second half goals for West Brom to secure a 2-0 victory over Everton at the Hawthorns.

Long, who had hit the bar in the first half, converted Peter Odemwingie's low cross from the left to put the Baggies ahead.

The points were sealed when McAuley, who played a big part in an outstanding defensive performance by Steve Clarke's team, then beat Tim Howard to a corner in the latter stages to end the Toffees' 100 percent start to the campaign.

Neither side included any new signings made in the final days of the transfer window in their squads, with Everton completing a deal for the versatile Copenhagen player Bryan Oviedo too late for him to feature.

West Brom was missing the bench threat of Romelu Lukaku, but were able to include Odemwingie, who had also been an injury doubt, among their substitutes.

Everton exerted most of the early pressure, with the powerful duo of Marouane Fellaini and Nikica Jelavic pinning back the West Brom defense. Ben Foster remained untested, however, despite the crosses aimed into the box and referee Jon Moss rightly waved played on when Jelavic appealed for a penalty under the challenge of Claudio Yacob.

It was West Brom who eventually had the first real chance of the contest having grown into their passing game as the half hour mark approached. Shortly after Graham Dorrans' through ball had just escaped James Morrison, Long rattled the crossbar with a header from Liam Ridgewell's excellent cross.

The substitution of Darron Gibson, who suffered an injury, was a factor in the deterioration of Everton's performance and control of possession in the first half but even when they did reach the penalty area, West Brom center backs McAuley and Jonas Olsson competed strongly with Fellaini and Jelavic and permitted headed attempts only from unthreatening areas.

Their defensive solidity was nearly rewarded when Morrison found space in the center of the pitch to advance at goal, rounding Sylvain Distin on the way, but Tim Howard made an excellent save to deny the Scottish midfielder.

Everton continued to edge the possession stakes in the second half and finally created a chance of note when substitute Kevin Mirallas rolled in a cross from the right that Fellaini clumsily blazed over the crossbar with his left foot when unmarked at the back post.

West Brom had introduced a wide forward of its own from the bench in Odemwingie, and the Nigerian created the first goal of the same in much the same way as Mirallas had laid on that gilt-edged chance for Everton. Escaping the attention of Hibbert down the left, he fired a low cross into the box that evaded Phil Jagielka and was tapped in by Long from close range.

Victor Anichebe was added to the Everton attack as Moyes attempted to find a spark of inspiration but McAuley, Olsson and company held firm.

Indeed, it was West Brom who looked more likely to exploit the space left by Everton's raids forward, with Yacob and Mulumbu going close from distance.

And when the latter's shot was palmed behind by Howard, McAuley stole in front of the goalkeeper from the resulting corner to seal the points and continue the Baggies' superb start to the season.

West Ham 3-0 Fulham: Carroll makes instant impact in dominant win for hosts

    206993hp2.jpg

West Ham was absolutely dominant as it beat Fulham 3-0 in the Premier League with all three goals from Kevin Nolan, Winston Reid and Matthew Taylor coming in the first half.

New signing Andy Carroll was an attacking force for the hosts, playing a part in all three goals before leaving the pitch with a tight hamstring in the second half.

With the transfer window closing less than 24 hours before kick off, there were new signings in the match day squads for both sides.

For West Ham, Carroll started up front, with Yossi Benayoun's loan move from Chelsea coming too late for him to be selected.

And for Fulham, Kieran Richardson made his full debut, with Dimitar Berbatov restricted to a place on the bench, while Hugo Rodallega, who was signed before the season began, made his first start for the club.

With less than a minute on the board, the Hammers took the lead after James Collins' clearing header was flicked on by Carroll to Ricardo Vaz Te. The Portuguese then laid the ball off for the on-rushing Nolan, who drove a volley into the bottom corner, giving Mark Schwarzer no chance.

The game was open, with Richardson testing Jussi Jaaskelainen from long range, before another Carroll header set up Mohammed Diame, who crashed an effort off the bar via the hand of Schwarzer.

Schwarzer was in action again, making a low stop from Vaz Te's effort after a good move down the left from the hosts, who were looking effective in the opening stages.

Nolan was in the thick of it again, this time attempting a chip from the edge of the box that just missed the target, landing on top of the net.

The Hammers were on top, and made it count half an hour in, when Taylor's corner was thumped home by Reid after Schwarzer made the decision to try and clear the ball, but got nowhere near it.

And just before halftime, the hosts made it three. Another free kick pumped into the box from deep, and this time Brede Hangeland beat Carroll in the air, but his header only reached the edge of the box where Taylor crashed it home into the bottom corner to cap a perfect half for Sam Allardyce.

Halftime saw Berbatov's introduction for the ineffective Mladen Petric, but it was more of the same as West Ham dominated. The Bulgarian striker oozed class when on the ball, but it was Carroll who dominated proceedings, with his movement causing probelms for Hangeland.

Taylor came close again with a free-kick, as his low, swerving effort almost caught out Schwarzer, who just did enough to keep it out.

Goalmouth action was at a bit of a premium, and with a little over 20 minutes remaining, Carroll was forced to leave the pitch after injuring his hamstring while jumping with Hangeland, and was substituted with Carlton Cole taking his place.

At the other end, Berbatov was linking well with his new team-mates, creating space for fellow sub Alex Kacaniklic to cross, and again laying off to Rodallega, but his shot was weak and straight at Jaaskelainen.

The Hammers keeper was forced into a late save, pushing Rodallega's effort onto the post, but there was little from Fulham as Allardyce's side strolled to victory.

Klopp wants Borussia Dortmund to focus on league encounter

    201348hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to focus on this weekend's Bundesliga encounter versus Nurnberg rather than think about their upcoming Champions League campaign.

The German champions were paired with Real Madrid, Manchester City and Ajax during Thursday's draw in Monaco, but Klopp has insisted that their focus should lie on the Nurnberg clash for now.

"It is an incredibly tough yet incredibly attractive group," the BVB coach stated at a press conference.

"However, Nurnberg were and still are the dominant issue this week. They are, unfortunately, on a roll."

Borussia Dortmund recorded a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen on matchday 1, while Nurnberg beat Hamburg 1-0 last week.
The previous Bundesliga encounter between both sides ended in a 2-0 win for the reigning champions.

Owen still confident of finding new club

    184996hp2.jpg

Former England international Michael Owen remains unattached following the end of the transfer window, but the striker still remains hopeful that he will return to Premier League action soon.

The 32-year-old, who made 89 appearances and scored 40 goals for England, was released by Manchester United in the summer and, thus, has no time restriction on when he can join a team due to being a free agent.

And the player remains confident that he will find a new team sooner than later, and has hinted that negotiations with possible suitors will be easier now the transfer window has closed with managers being able to assess the layout of their squad without the pressure of deadline day.
"Nothing to confirm just yet, will be an interesting few days now that the transfer window is closed,” Owen wrote on his Twitteraccount.

Stoke City and Everton were reportedly keen on signing the former Liverpool and Real Madrid forward, who has had a career blighted by injury.

Euro 2020 could be held in more than 10 countries, says Platini

    194948hp2.jpg

Michel Platini has revealed changes could soon be made to the structure of the European Championship held every four years.

The Frenchman, who captained France to glory in the 1984 edition of the tournament, also expressed his personal opinion and preference regarding the competition's organization.

"In a few months we will discuss the matter with the national associations. Before the end of the year, a decision will be made," the 57-year old told The Guardian. "I would prefer the Euros be played in 13 countries."

"The semifinals and final would be played in the same country. 12 other countries would be assigned four other matches each," he concluded.

The former Ballon d'Or winner also reiterated his views on goal-line technology: "Technology is not good for football. I simply oppose it and I won't change my opinion [at my age]."

Euro 2016, the first edition to feature 24 nations, will be held in France, where current holders Spain will look to claim a third consecutive crown.

Chelsea asked us not to include Mata in Spain squad, says Del Bosque

    202218hp2.jpg

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has revealed that Chelsea asked him not to call up Juan Mata for the upcoming matches against Saudi Arabia and Georgia, as the club feels the attacker needs rest.

Mata featured at Euro 2012 with the Spanish national side before traveling to London to take part in the summer Olympics, and Del Bosque feels omitting the 24-year-old was the right thing to do given the circumstances.

"Mata's absence may be conspicuous but there is an explanation. Chelsea rang us to request that we do not call him up because he has hardly had any time off this summer," Del Bosque stated at a press conference.

"We obviously have a duty to do what's best for our squad, but there are situations like this that just make common sense."

The Spain boss then went on to say that Bayern Munich head coach Jupp Heynckes also contacted him with the request not to call up Javi Martinez.

"Javi Martinez wouldn't have come with us anyway but yes, I have to say that Heynckes called me with concerns about the length of time he has not played for and the difficulty of getting used to German football. While there is no league competition, this time will be very useful for just that."

The reigning European and world champions first take on Saudi Arabia before starting their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign against Georgia on September 10.

Santi Cazorla is one of the best, says Liverpool defender Enrique

    203733hp2.jpg

Liverpool defender Jose Enrique labelled Arsenal star Santi Cazorla as "one of the best" ahead of the Premier League encounter between the two sides on Sunday.

Enrique moved to Newcastle United from Villarreal the season Cazorla arrived at El Madrigal, but the Reds defender has seen enough of Arsenal's new signing from his La Liga days to know what he is capable of.

Spain have an endless list of quality midfielders but Enrique claims that the 27-year-old playmaker is among the finest around.

"Santi Cazorla is a great player and one of the best," he told Liverpool's official website. "Arsenal are an amazing team. They have sold a few players like Robin van Persie this year, and the year before they sold Samir Nasri, but they bring in new players and still finish in the top four."

The Reds have picked up a point from their opening two games of the season but Enrique isn't panicking just yet. He feels a win against Arsene Wenger's can change things very quickly.

"We have just one point in the league at the moment, but Real Madrid have started the same way - it doesn't mean anything (yet)," he added.

"If we win it will be a positive message for everyone. Four points in three games, two of which were against Manchester City and Arsenal, is okay I think."Liverpool has tended to improve its level of perfomance for the big matches at Anfield and Enrique hopes they can carry on the trend against Arsenal on Sunday.

"I think we play better against these types of teams," he explained. "We'll play at Anfield, which is good for us, and if we play as we did against Manchester City we can beat them [Arsenal].
"We have a good squad. Some players have left and some have come in, and we have a very good squad."

Former Italy international Alessio Tacchinardi has questioned Juventus' decision to sign Nicklas Bendtner from Arsenal on a one-year loan deal.

The Serie A champions completed the signing of the Denmark international on Friday, but Tacchinardi feels the towering striker does not add anything to the team.

"I will not say that Bendtner is a bad player, but he does not help improve Juventus either. He is not the player that helps them make the step up in quality," Tacchinardi stated to Sky Sport Italia.

"I will not deny that he is a decent striker, but I would have preferred to see another attacker join Juventus this summer."

Gianluca Vialli, who led the line for Juventus from 1992 until 1996, has plenty of doubts about the former Gunners striker as well, but feels his physicality could prove helpful.

"Bendtner is very convinced of his own qualities and is not afraid to try something difficult. His courage and physicality will be a weapon in Italy.

"Nevertheless, he will not stand out for his skills. He has chosen the wrong league if that's what he's aiming for."

Bendtner could make his official Juve debut on Sunday against Udinese.

Anzhi signs Lassana Diarra on loan from Real Madrid

Real Madrid has announced on its official website that they have reached an agreement with Anzhi Makhachkala over the one-season loan of Lassana Diarra, pending a medical.

The Russian outfit were keen to add some more experience to their squad in order to fight for top honors, and Guus Hiddink sees Diarra as the ideal addition to his midfield.

The 27-year-old joined Madrid from Portsmouth in January 2009, and quickly developed into an important first-team member at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, he has since lost his spot in the starting XI and was deemed surplus to requirements by head coach Jose Mourinho.

Diarra had also attracted the interest of AC Milan, but the Serie A side eventually opted to sign Nigel de Jong instead.

Manchester City striker Balotelli set to undergo eye surgery

    205755hp2.jpg

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has confirmed that Mario Balotelli is set to undergo eye surgery on September 4.

The 22-year-old is no longer able to wear contact lenses and requires surgery to correct the problem.

Mancini revealed the Italian striker will soon go under the knife and consequently is not ready to feature in City's match against QPR this weekend.

"Mario is not ready to return to the pitch yet. He no longer seems to tolerate contact lenses. He's feeling alright now, but the problem can return any time," Mancini told reporters.

The City manager is already without key forward Sergio Aguero for the next couple of weeks after he picked up a knee injury in the opening game of the season.

He had asked Balotelli to step up to the plate during the Argentine's injury layoff, but now the Italian has joined Aguero on the sidelines.

The 47-year-old will therefore have to rely on the combination of Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko to lead the line in the absence of Aguero and Balotelli.

Premier League clubs dominate summer spending as most of Europe cuts back

    206888hp2.jpg

Premier League clubs spent a massive 490 million pounds in the summer transfer window, an increase of 4m pounds from the same period last year, according to analysis by business advisory firm Deloitte.

A frenetic final day of transfer activity saw a number of big-money deals completed before the window closed, with Manchester City signing Javi Garcia for 18m pounds, Fulham bringing in Dimitar Berbatov and Tottenham snapping up both Hugo Lloris and Clint Dempsey.

While this summer's spending did not reach the record of 500m pounds spent in 2008, it came very close, with the newly-promoted clubs also not afraid to heavily invest, as evidenced by Southampton smashing their club record with the 11m pounds capture of Gaston Ramirez from Bologna.

The analysis also revealed that Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal have all exceeded 30m pounds in gross transfer spending, while a busy final day saw Premier League clubs conclude deals totalling around 110m pounds, approximately 9m pounds more than the equivalent deadline day figure for summer 2011.

Overseas, Spanish clubs kept relatively quiet, with Real Madrid making one big signing in Luka Modric, while Barcelona spent 14m euros on Jordi Alba, and another 15m pounds on Alex Song.

The chasing pack, meanwhile, spent relatively modest sums; Valencia's spending was dictated by how much they received, while Atletico Madrid was more focused on keeping hold of Radamel Falcao.

Malaga, experiencing financial troubles, took Roque Santa Cruz on loan and let go of Santi Cazorla and Salomon Rondon.

The rest of La Liga barely spent any money whatsoever, as has become the norm in recent seasons.

Juventus were the biggest spenders in Serie A as it secured the services of players such as Mauricio Isla, Kwadwo Asamoah and Sebastian Giovinco, while Inter did not hesitate to spend big on Alvaro Pereira, Samir Handanovic and Rodrigo Palacio.

AC Milan was pillaged by mainland Europe's biggest spenders, while Fiorentina made some impressive purchases, largely financed by the late sale of Matija Nastasic to Manchester City.

On the whole, it is estimated -not by Deloitte, however - that the 20 clubs earned more money than they spent transfer-wise.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich paid a record fee of 40m euros to lure Javi Martinez away from Athletic Bilbao, while champions Borussia Dortmund splashed the money it received from Manchester United for Shinji Kagawa on Marco Reus.

Hamburg splashed out on Rafael van der Vaart to boost its spending, but it was a similiar story for the rest of the Bundesliga.

The remaining 15 clubs spent no more than an estimated 7m euros net on transfers, with the biggest spenders, Bayer Leverkusen (around 5.6m euros net) and Borussia Monchengladbach (around 6.5m euros net), benefiting from Champions League income.

However, the unrivalled champions when it comes to spending in mainland Europe are Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain.

Les Parisiens parted with over 100m euros in order to sign Ezequiel Lavezzi, Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Carlo Ancelotti's side apart, however, French spending was extremely low; Lille, Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais all posted estimated transfer-related profits of at least 10m euros, while no club - PSG aside - had a higher net spend than 5m euros.
