Santos president: If Lucas is worth 44 million euros then Neymar is priceless

189000hp2.jpg

In the wake of Lucas Moura's huge transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, Santos president Luis Alvaro has declared that Neymar is "priceless".

The 19-year-old winger ended one of the summer's most intense transfer sagas by completing his move to the French club for a reported fee of 44 million euros.

With Lucas demanding such a price, the Peixe supremo has declared that the potential value of his side's superstar, Neymar, is incomprehensible.

"I am adamant in saying that Neymar is priceless," Alvaro told Lance!. "Millions and millions of euro, dollars and reais could not pay for him.

"He is a unique player. [He is] distinguished... [he] is the great idol of Brazilian football, [for whom it is] impossible to negotiate for.

"I also understand that the amount spent for Lucas is deserved. Both are players who represent a new stage of Brazilian football. Along with [Leandro] Damiao, they are impressing the world."

Neymar signed a new contract with Santos in December of last year that has a buy-out fee of 65 million euros. This could now be met by clubs such as Barcelona and Real Madrid but Alvaro remains unconcerned and is happy to have the mercurial forward tied down until 2014.

"I do not regret anything. On the contrary, I am even more convinced that the service paid to the history of Santos is priceless.

"We are seeing the affection of the fans, how important it was for the young fans to see Neymar remain at the [Vila] Belmiro. I am privileged to have secured Neymar until 2014, at the end of his contract."

Finally, the president offered his view on the transfer of Lucas to PSG, jokingly saying that he welcomes it.

"Sao Paulo has lost a player who always took great risks against Santos. His trip to Europe is a relief."

Cristiano Ronaldo confident Kaka will stay at Real Madrid

    201157hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo believes that Kaka will not leave Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian midfielder is continually being linked with a move back to AC Milan, but the Rossoneri's dire financial situation has so far held up a deal, and his teammate does not think the deal will materialize before the transfer window closes.

"Whether Kaka will leave the club or not is a decision he has to take himself, but I think he will stay here," Ronaldo told reporters. "For me he is one of the best players in the world, and all the best players have to be at Real Madrid."

The Portugal international then looked ahead to Madrid's Liga opener against Valencia, and stressed that the club wants to start the season on top form.

"We want to keep improving because it will be a long season," he said. "What we all want is to start the season in the best way. We are working well together and we want to start the league on form."

Madrid hosts Valencia at the Santiago Bernabeu on Aug. 19.

Liverpool manager Rodgers admits contact from Manchester City over Agger

    152838hp2.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Manchester City made contact about defender Daniel Agger, but says the Premier League winner's bid is some way off his own valuation for the center back.

There had been reports that Liverpool had rejected a bid in the region of 20 million pounds from Manchester City for Agger, and Rodgers says it would take "a ridiculous offer" for Liverpool to sell one of its prized assets.

"Daniel is one of the leading center halves in Europe," Rodgers told reporters. "There's been contact from City but it's nowhere near his value. You can only consider something like that if it is going to benefit you.

"Of course, you might lose a top player but if it benefits you going forward — and you can make two or three steps forward because of it — you may have to consider it. But we don't want to sell him so unless someone comes in with a ridiculous offer, there's no way I want to lose one of my best players."

The 39-year-old has reassured fans from Merseyside that Agger does not want to leave after speaking to him when he took over the helm at Anfield.

He added: "There's always rumor, particularly in this period. It's just a shame the window does not shut as the season starts.

"But Daniel and I have had a number of conversations so he knows where I am at, he knows where the club are at and he doesn't want to leave, which is great. In my first conversation with him at the Euros he made that quite clear.

"He loves the club, loves the fans, so that was music to my ears — but we'll see."

Juventus is hungry for success, warns Marchisio

    184950hp2.jpg

Claudio Marchisio is relishing Juventus' Supercoppa Italiana clash with Napoli at the weekend, and is determined to start the season on a high by winning another trophy.

The midfielder reckons the Bianconeri are the team to beat following last year's Serie A title triumph, and want to make their status as Italian champions count by enjoying continued success, starting with the new campaign's curtain-raiser.

"We need to show we are the strongest in our game against Napoli. We are playing for the first trophy of the season, we are the reigning champions and we want to display that on the pitch. Juventus are always hungry for success," Marchisio said at a press conference.

"Napoli have developed greatly over the last few years and have made some quality purchases. However, they are also aware they will be facing a tough team that wants to continue winning."

Marchisio then went on to discuss the Scommessopoli scandal that has rocked Italian soccer in recent weeks, and is adamant the match-fixing probe will not pose Juventus a distraction.

"We are just thinking about the game. We have got thick skin and seeing the coach so focused can only rub off on us. We are not affected by events going on around us, if anything it gives us a boost to do well."

Antonio Conte reportedly faces a 10-month ban for his role in the ring, though Leonardo Bonucci and Simone Pepe could be acquitted.

Jose Mourinho doesn't think La Liga's champion will reach 100 points again

    201163hp2.jpg

NEW YORK -- Jose Mourinho believes that Real Madrid's run in the 2011-12 season will go down in history as one of the best individual campaigns ever.

"First of all I don't think that the champion will reach 100 points again," Mourinho said in the post-game press conference after beating AC Milan 5-1 in a preseason friendly. "I don't think the champion will score 120 goals. I think these are numbers that will stay in history for a long time."

Referring to a new battle between Real Madrid and Barcelona for the La Liga crown in the upcoming season, the Portuguese manager was well aware that his old rival will ramp up its pursuit of the championship.

"Everybody knows it will be a close fight between, in my opinion, the two best teams in the world," the former Chelsea boss said. "Because in the previous season we had so many points and Barcelona had [almost as many], people probably think the league is not so strong."

But Mourinho added that people should look beyond the Merengues and Culés in the Spanish league, noting that the Europa League final was contested by two Iberian teams.

"I remember that the Europa League final was between Atletico Madrid and Atheltic Bilbao. The league is very, very strong," he said.

After a policy that had seen every player get a half of play each, Mourinho allowed for some of his players to see more time on the field this time around.

"Today, I wanted some players to play more than the usual 45 minutes because we don't have much more time to prepare for the season," the Portuguese coach said. Mourinho also noted that the fan experience weighed on his mind in his decision to allow certain players to have more minutes.

"I think Cristiano was part of the show. He’s part of what the people want to see but, more importantly than that, it was a very good training session for us and I’m happy with that. And no injuries," he said.

Vilanova: It would be disrespectful for Barcelona to talk about Song

    201859hp2.jpg

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova refused to comment on the Catalans' alleged interest in midfielder Alexandre Song, as he feels it would show a lack of respect towards Arsenal.

Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta recently voiced their admiration for the Cameroon international when asked about his qualities, but the newly-appointed trainer chose to avoid being drawn in on discussing a rival team's player.

"I prefer to not talk about players that are not part of the Barca team. I think it is disrespectful to other teams if we talk about players that are not part of Barcelona," Vilanova told reporters. "Whoever comes must be a good player, that is what is important. There is no rush."

Song, now 24, has developed into an important first team member at the Gunners since joining from Bastia in August 2005.

His contract with Arsenal runs until the summer of 2015.

Sergio Ramos: We already want La Liga to begin

    201599hp2.jpg

NEW YORK -- It's safe to say Sergio Ramos has been impressed with the fan support for Real Madrid on their tour of the United States.

The Spanish defender noted that Los Angeles, Las Vegas and now New York have received the Merengues with open arms this summer.

"It's nice coming to this country and being accepted with warmth and love," the two-time Euro champion told Goal.com after the 5-1 rout of Milan. "We have to be thankful for that. It's notorious the way people react to what Real Madrid means in the soccer world and we have to give thanks for that."

Once again, the issue of a long preseason before an intense calendar of official games was presented as an issue by the press, a notion that Ramos was quick to shoot down.

“These tours are helpful because we can have some experiences as a team that we cannot have during the season and that makes us a better team,” Ramos said. On their preseason friendly tour in North America, Los Blancos have won all three matches against the LA Galaxy, Santos Laguna and now AC Milan.

And despite the potential difficulty being ramped up by facing the Serie A giant, it is clear that this version of the Rossoneri is quite diminished with the offseason departures of stars Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Motta, among others.

“I think this was a good game to tune up the team before the season. It will start with a title at stake [the Supercopa] against Barcelona. We already want La Liga to begin,” noted the center back.

    Milan is targeting Giuseppe Rossi

    144626hp2.jpg

AC Milan's rebuilding process might not take as long as some expect.

Goal.com has learned that Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi is a target for the Serie A club as it looks to rebuild itself after selling both Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Paris Saint-Germain for 62 million euros.

Rossi was in attendance for Milan's brutal 5-1 loss to Real Madrid in Yankee Stadium. After the match, he was seen speaking with several of Milan's players and head coach Massimiliano Allegri outside of the team locker room. Another reported Milan target, Kaka, was also inside Milan's locker room for over 30 minutes and he walked out hugging his Brazil teammate Robinho and talking to players.

Neither Kaka nor Rossi made themselves available for comment, but a potential future teammate of both players, Urby Emanuelson, is looking forward to the possibility of playing with both.

"Yea, those guys are two great players. I think they will make the team a lot stronger. We will see what will happen," Emanuelson told Goal.com.

He added, "We still have three weeks for us to rebuild. We will see what happens. I think the club obviously wants to bring in some players, so we'll see."

Reds may sell Anfield naming rights

    liverpoolanfield20120809_576x324.jpg

Liverpool's principal owner John W Henry says he is prepared to consider selling the naming rights to Anfield to raise funds.
Henry also called upon the Premier League to implement Financial Fair Play properly - accusing some of the Reds' rivals of ignoring UEFA regulations designed to try to make clubs balance the books.

The American revealed he and his Fenway Sports Group are looking to the overseas market to boost Liverpool's income and that a rebranding of Liverpool's historic home could be on the cards.

"This club should be able to significantly increase its revenues but it won't be easy," he told the Tomkins Times. "But I don't see it happening at the local level - the vast majority must come from our global agenda."A naming rights deal at Anfield could occur if the partner were right. We haven't [yet] pursued it."

Henry said Liverpool are looking to be self-sufficient and criticised clubs who overspend. Manchester City posted losses of £197 million for the 2010-11 financial year while Chelsea have already paid more than £60 million to recruit new players this summer.UEFA has the power to bar clubs who declare losses of more than €45 million over a three-year period from European competition, but Henry doubts that will happen and called upon the Premier League to act.

"The mandate of Financial Fair Play in Europe is for clubs to live within their means," Henry said. "Recently I was told that half of the clubs in the top divisions within Europe are losing money and 20% are in straits of varying degrees.

"We believe the league itself may have to adopt its own rules given that clubs seem to be ignoring UEFA's rules, which may be porous enough to enable clubs to say that the trend of huge losses is positive and therefore be exempt from any meaningful sanctions."

Liverpool have been criticised for paying excessive transfer fees for players since FSG's 2010 takeover, with almost £130 million having been spent, but Henry said: "It's up to LFC to invest properly in players going forward so that the club can not only be sustainable but a powerhouse."Liverpool were Carling Cup winners and FA Cup finalists last season but Kenny Dalglish was sacked after they finished eighth in the league, with Henry outlining that a 19th title is the long-term aim at Anfield.

"Our goal is to win the Premier League. It's not going to happen this year, but that is what we are building for - first and foremost. That's only going to happen if our league performance turns around substantially."

:yes:Fergie: Paying €45m for Lucas is crazy

    siralexfergusonpre-seasonlaugh20120803_576x324.jpg

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed Paris Saint Germain's decision to shell out €45million on Lucas Moura suggests the "game's gone mad".

United had looked in pole position to land one of the brightest stars in Brazilian football, but they were trumped by a huge offer from cash-rich PSG that persuaded Sao Paulo to sell.
The arrival of Lucas will take the Ligue 1 club's spending this summer well over the £100 million mark, with Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also brought in for huge fees, and Ferguson has suggested there is no way United can compete until UEFA steps in.

"I find it quite amazing that a club can pay €45 million for a 19-year-old boy," Ferguson said. "To make a mark on everyone - to tell everyone that PSG are here - they've signed Thiago Silva from Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

"They must have spent about €150 million in the last month. As you know, the only deterrent to that is UEFA. "When somebody's paying €45 million for a 19-year-old boy you have to say the game's gone mad."
