Rennes confirm Premier League bid for Arsenal target M'Vila

    187133hp2.jpg

Ligue 1 club Rennes has received a bid from a Premier League club for defensive midfielder and Arsenal target Yann M'Vila, the club's chairman confirmed.

An as yet unnamed club put forth an offer for the 22-year-old in an attempt to bring him to England's top-flight. M'Vila has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in recent times, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger ruled out any chance of the Amiens-born player making his way to the Emirates back in July.

Chairman Frederic de Saint-Sernin has confirmed an official bid for the France international has been received by Rennes, but a decision on the youngster's future has yet to be decided.

"He has a very concrete offer from England," Saint-Sernin told Canal+ after his side’s opening day loss to Lyon on Saturday.

M'Vila joined the Ligue 1 outfit aged 15, and has made 110 first-team appearances for the French club since making his professional debut in 2009.

Ibrahimovic: Paris Saint-Germain will only get better

    201910hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain's two-goal hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic is convinced there is more to come from him and his teammates, after his late penalty rescued a last-gasp point at home to Lorient.

The visitor had surged into a healthy lead inside the opening 45 minutes, but was pegged back by the brilliance of the mercurial Swede, who capped a debut to remember when he netted his second of the night by firing home an 89th minute penalty to salvage a point.

"It's just the first match with a new team," he told the media at the post-match press conference. "There's still plenty of time to get better organized and do well."

In evidently more buoyant mood was Carlo Ancelotti, who nevertheless still lamented the loss of two points that would have given his side the advantage over French champion Montpellier, which was also held to a draw on Friday.

"Ibrahimovic turned in a fantastic shift," gushed the coach. "We put in a better performance in the second half. Unfortunately, we lacked balance in the first period. While we displayed characther to fight back, we have to work better as a unit."

French fullback Debuchy tells Lille: I still want to go

    200882hp2.jpg

Lille right back Mathieu Debuchy has insisted that he remains determined to leave the club despite the Ligue 1 side putting its foot down with regards to his potential transfer to Newcastle.

The Magpies had a fresh bid for the France international rejected rejected in early August, with Les Dogues boss Rudi Garcia declaring that "the club has made a decision and he has to deal with it." But the 26-year-old, speaking to Canal+ after his side's 2-1 victory over Saint-Etienne, stated: "I don't want to talk about my future. I heard what the chairman said. The transfer window is open until Sept. 4 [in France]. I still want to go. We will see."

Newcastle is pursuing Debuchy after enjoying great success with the capture of Yohan Cabaye from the 2010-11 French champion last summer, with the midfielder proving a key man in its fifth-place Premier League finish.

Lille is understood to be holding out for a fee of around 8 million euros [6.3m pounds], which Alan Pardew's men have not yet been willing to match.

"It was important to start the league with a victory and make a good start to the campaign," the defender added of the match itself, his club’s first of the domestic campaign. "To win here is never easy. We produced good football, we stepped back a little in the second half but we did well at the end."

Liverpool legend Hyypia would 'rather play against Carroll than Suarez'

Former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia says that he would have preferred to play against Andy Carroll rather than Luis Suarez when he was a player.

Carroll's future is in doubt at the Reds after scoring just 11 goals since moving to Anfield for 35 million pounds in January 2011 and he has been the subject of bids from former club Newcastle United as well as West Ham. Hyypia, who returns to Anfield as manager of Bayer Leverkusen for a preseason friendly on Sunday, admitted that he was not one of the 23-year-old's admirers.

"I can't say that I'm a fan of Andy Carroll but I can't say anything against him," Hyypia told reporters. "If I was thinking I had to play against a striker I would rather play against Andy than Luis Suarez. The type of player Andy is, that would suit me better than Suarez.

"Suarez is a very good player. I think I would hate to play against him!"

Despite his lukewarm assessment of Carroll, Hyypia believed that top talent remained in the Reds' ranks, with the 38-year-old identifying Manchester City target Daniel Agger as one of Brendan Rodgers' best players.

"Steven Gerrard has been a top player for years now and he is getting a bit older and wiser," he continued. "Daniel Agger is a very, very good center half. Hopefully he can stay fit and play the whole season without injury. He can then show how good a player he really is."

The giant Finn, who played 464 times for Liverpool between 1999 and 2009, said he was glad to return to Merseyside and hasn't ruled out the possibility of a role at the club in the future.

Hyypia would not be drawn into offering an opinion on the club's latest managerial change, but hoped to see the club return to title contention in the Premier League.

"It's good to be back at Anfield, and hopefully I will get a good reception from the Liverpool fans," he added. "I would like to come back here but I haven't really thought about it.

"Kenny (Dalglish) has a special place with Liverpool but difficult to say if it was a good or bad decision to fire him. In football that can happen and everybody has to accept the decision. Hopefully Liverpool can return to the state of 10 years ago."

Marco Fabian likens Mexico gold to dream come true

    202373hp2.jpg

LONDON -- With Olympic gold draped around his neck, Mexico midfielder Marco Fabian could barely contain his emotions following the 2-1 win by El Tri over Brazil.

"I can't describe how I feel. We dreamt about this every night. It's unbelievable," said Fabian, holding back tears as he spoke after the game.

With celebration already raging in Mexico over the London 2012 gold medal (Mexico's first in any sport during these games), Fabian offered his thoughts to fans back in the North American country.

"We did this for all of Mexico and I know that this is a day where we can all celebrate," he said.

Mexico's youth ascension in the past decade found an exclamation point with the U-23 championship in London, just one year after El Tri won its second U-17 World Cup as well as placing third in the U-20 World Cup a month later.

Asked if Mexico's Olympic win can place it within the elite of world football, Fabian was clear.

"Mexico is a big team. We're a big team and this proves it," he finished.

Brazil legend Romario criticizes Mano Menezes for Olympic failure

    202397hp2.jpg

Brazilian legend Romario has heavily criticized national team coach Mano Menezes after his side's shock 2-1 defeat to Mexico in the final of the men's football tournament at the Olympic Games.

Menezes' side was tipped as heavy favorite after a relatively straightforward passage to the final, but was undone as early as the first minute when Oribe Peralta netted a quickfire opener, before doubling the advantage with 15 minutes to go.

Though Hulk reduced the deficit in injury time, the Mexicans held on to claim the gold medal, and consign Brazil to misery, as the Olympic title remains to be the only one to have eluded the five-time world champions.

Romario, who participated in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, lambasted the current coach after yet another failure in London, following on from last year's Copa America, before indicating that Menezes' time may be up.

"He is a coach who cannot pick the correct selection and does not call-up the right players. Thankfully we are seeing today his last match [in charge] of the selection," the former international told TV Record.

Brazil faces Sweden in an international friendly on Wednesday.

Porto expects Chelsea target Hulk to stay

    171644hp2.jpg

Porto president Pinto da Costa expects Chelsea target Hulk to remain with the Portuguese club and has claimed that he will not be allowed to leave unless his release clause of 100 million euros is activated.

The 26-year-old scored in Brazil's 2-1 Olympic Games final defeat to Mexico on Saturday and has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge to replace the recently departed Didier Drogba.

Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Zenit St Petersburg are also thought to be interested, but now Da Costa has played down the possibility of the striker leaving the Estadio do Dragao.

"Hulk is a player with a buyout fee and if any club want him, they just need to pay that," da Costa is quoted as saying by Sporting Life. "He will only leave if it interests both Porto and the player.

"But so far nothing has happened to make me think we'll reach that point. Therefore, I expect that for this season he will remain a Porto player."

The player's agent, Teodoro Fonseca, however, insists that there is still a chance his client could move on in the near future.

"Hulk has a contract. He likes Porto but at the moment everything has a question mark," Fonseca told Radio Renascenca.

"We sometimes want a player to stay, but the conditions aren't the best. Everything is possible in the world of football."

Chelsea 2-3 Manchester City: Tevez, Yaya Toure and Nasri down 10-man Blues

    202559hp2.jpg

Manchester City produced a swashbuckling second-half display to beat 10-man Chelsea 3-2 in the Community Shield and warn the rest of the Premier League that the club is ready to retain its title.

Roberto Mancini may believe Manchester United is the favorite to win the league this season, but his City side was in fine form at Villa Park and dominated this feisty match despite falling behind to Fernando Torres’ 40th minute strike.

Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri struck three superb goals after the break as City took advantage of space in the Chelsea defense created by the red card shown to Branislav Ivanovic in the 42nd minute for a horrible studs-up challenge on Aleksandar Kolarov.

Ryan Bertrand grabbed a late goal back for Chelsea but City held on comfortably to complete a successful day following the news that the club had agreed a fee with Everton to sign Jack Rodwell.

    mancitycelebshield20110812_576x324.jpg

There was certainly nothing charitable about the traditional season curtain raiser as fierce challenges flew in with almost the same ferocity as the rain pounding down in the west Midlands.

Nigel De Jong set the tone with a lunging foul on Frank Lampard, while City defender Stefan Savic was booked as he took out his frustration on Eden Hazard’s ankle.

Thousands of supporters arrived late due to traffic on the M6, but they missed little action of note in the early stages as the champions of England and Europe cancelled each other out in a congested midfield.

In the third minute, Tevez forced the first save of note from Petr Cech with a free kick from the corner of the penalty area that curled over the wall but lacked the power to beat the Chelsea goalkeeper at his near post.

City looked rather uncomfortable defensively with the 3-5-2 formation deployed by Mancini, but they began to take control of proceedings, Nasri coming close but seeing his effort from a tight angle smothered by Cech.

Hazard, the only summer signing to start the match for either side, showed glimpses of his quality, taking the ball under pressure and using his skill to move the City defenders.

The 32 million pound Belgian is certainly confident in his own ability - but his first game on English soil is likely to be remembered for the moment in the first half when he fell flat on his face when attempting a back heel.

On 28 minutes, it was Hazard who drifted inside and fizzed a low shot towards the bottom corner of Costel Pantilmon’s goal, the first shot in anger from a Chelsea player.

Against the run of play, however, the Blues took the lead in the 40th minute, with Torres making a clear statement of his intent for the new season after winning the Golden Boot at Euro 2012.

Ramires did all of the hard work for the Spaniard, taking the ball on the edge of the penalty area and executing a neat reverse pass. Torres’ finish was masterly, a perfect first touch with his right foot and a deadly clipped finish with his left from eight yards.

Yet Chelsea’s celebrations were short-lived as Roberto Di Matteo’s side was reduced to 10 men less than two minutes later as Ivanovic was sent off. The Serbian’s studs-up lunge on Aleksandar Kolarov was dangerous, reckless and completely unnecessary and the fullback will now be suspended for three matches.

The extra man told as City dominated from the whistle after the re-start and drew level eight minutes into the second half. Yaya Toure, always the man for the occasion, collected a poor clearance from John Terry and swept the ball low into the corner from 20 yards, making the difficult look simple.

In the 58th minute, City took the lead with a goal that was as inevitable as it was brilliant. There seemed little danger when Tevez collected the ball on the left of the Chelsea box, but he cut across, past the dangling leg of David Luiz, before smashing a missile into the top corner.

Cech could only stand motionless as the striker wheeled away in celebration, the man who spent most of last season in Argentina dedicating his goal to the Fuerte Apache area where he grew up in Buenos Aires.

By now, there was no doubt of the outcome of the match, but Nasri added the finishing touch with a first-time volley on his left foot to turn in Kolarov’s cross following a sweeping move.

Chelsea substitute Ryan Bertrand grabbed a goal back for the Londoners in the 78th minute as he turned in a rebound from close range when Pantilimon made a mess of his attempt to save Daniel Sturridge’s shot.

But it was not enough and City deservedly saw the game out to land a psychological blow more telling than any of the physical combat on the pitch.

Liverpool 3-1 Bayer Leverkusen: Sterling, Lucas and Carroll seal perfect end to preseason on Hyypia's Anfield return

    202565hp2.jpg

Liverpool ended its preseason campaign in style by cantering to a 3-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen on an emotional return to Anfield for opposition manager Sami Hyypia.

The host made four changes from the Europa League victory over FC Gomel, with Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel dropping out in defence to be replaced by Martin Kelly, Sebastian Coates and Jamie Carragher. Fabio Borini failed to make the squad despite his goalscoring heroics in midweek. Latest signing Joe Allen missed out on making his Liverpool debut due to his participation in an upcoming Wales friendly.

Former Red Hyypia, meanwhile, named a strong lineup with the Bundesliga kickoff imminent, with the likes of Germany internationals Stefan Kiessling and Lars Bender handed starting berths.

Teenage prospect Raheem Sterling opened the scoring with just seconds on the clock, jinking inside his man to curl in, before Lucas doubled that lead before half-time from close range.

A flurry of substitutions took place at the interval including the arrival of Andy Carroll, who made his mark with a drilled finish midway through the second period.

But it was to be the Bundesliga side which finished up the scoring as Sidney Sam fired in brilliantly late on to put a respectable gloss on the scoreline for his team.

The send off for Hyypia which followed the full time whistle certainly proved that the club's fans are in fine voice ahead of a return to domestic action.

FC Koln 0-4 Arsenal: Podolski hits double against former club

    202584hp2.jpg

Arsenal concluded its preseason preparations with a dominant 4-0 win over German side FC Koln. A Lucas Podolski double and a Thomas Vermaelen header gave the Gunners a 3-0 lead at half time, with Gervinho making it four after the break.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger opted to start with new signing Santi Cazorla alongside fellow summer recruits Podolski and Olivier Giroud in the first half, with unsettled striker Robin van Persie introduced for a 20 minute cameo in the second period.

The Premier League side took little time seizing the initiative as Vermaelen consolidated a positive start by powering home Cazorla's corner after seven minutes.

Podolski - featuring against his former club in a friendly arranged as part of the deal that brought him to the Emirates - doubled the visitors' lead from the penalty spot soon after when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was brought down in the box.

Koln goalkeeper Timo Horn made a couple of saves to prevent Arsenal further extending their lead, first denying Giroud at point blank range after Cazorla piked him out, then tipping over a Per Mertesacker header. However, Podolski grabbed his second moments before half time after Kieran Gibbs powered down the left flank and cut back for the German to slot home convincingly.

Wenger made a host of changes for the second half, introducing Gervinho, Alex Song and Wojciech Szczesny among others. Ivorian Gervinho took little time to settle into Arsenal's fluid attack and nudged the ball along to Podolski who was denied his hat trick by a last-ditch sliding challenge.

Matthias Lehmann was unfortunate to see his driven effort from 30 yards out cannon off the bar as the hosts searched for a way to get back into the game but Gervinho settled matters on the hour mark, surging down the left and cutting in from the byline to fire in at the near post.

Podolski was withdrawn after 70 minutes to rapturous applause from both sets of fans, with the German replaced by Van Persie. The change of personnel led to Arsenal suffering difficulties building momentum as the visitors played keep ball for the last 20 minutes.

A little more care from Andrey Arshavin could have led to a Van Persie tap-in at the death but the Russian miscued his pass with the goal gaping.

The Gunners begin their Premier League campaign next Saturday when they host Sunderland at home.

Everton accepts Manchester City's bid for Jack Rodwell

    197625hp2.jpg

Everton has accepted a bid from Manchester City for the transfer of midfielder Jack Rodwell.

The Toffees have revealed that an undisclosed fee has been agreed with the Premier League champion and the 21-year-old is set to have a medical on Sunday prior to a move.

Rodwell came through the ranks at Everton and has made over 100 appearances since making his breakthrough under David Moyes.

However, his career has been blighted by injuries thus far and he was restricted to just 14 league games last season.

Rodwell had been widely expected to make Stuart Pearce's Team GB squad this summer but was forced to withdraw after suffering yet another injury blow prior to the tournament.

The Southport-born midfielder was handed his first England cap by Fabio Capello in Nov. 2011, making a substitute appearance during a 1-0 friendly victory over Spain.

The former Under-21 international is set to become Roberto Mancini's first purchase of the summer transfer window should the move be confirmed.

Mancini warns Rodwell he is not ready for Manchester City's starting XI

    183067hp2.jpg

BIRMINGHAM - Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has warned new signing Jack Rodwell he must improve to play at the highest level and remains eager to sign new players before the start of the Premier League season.

City announced on Sunday that the club had agreed a fee with Everton, believed to be around 18 million pounds, to lure the 21-year-old to the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking after City's 3-2 win over Chelsea in the Community Shield at Villa Park, Mancini talked of the incoming midfielder as a player for the future who must get used to competing for trophies.

"Jack Rodwell is a young player who needs to improve to play at this level," said Mancini. "He's a good player for our future, I hope. I liked Jack last season and for this reason we bought him.

"He's doing a medical at this moment. I think he's a good player, he's young and it's the first time he'll play to win things. It will be difficult for him but I am sure in a couple of years he will be a top midfielder because he's strong."

Rodwell will become the first summer arrival at City following the club's Premier League title triumph and Mancini admits he remains frustrated by the lack of progress in the team's pursuit of transfer targets, including Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.

"I'm unhappy, it's normal," added the Italian. "Every manager is unhappy if one week from the season they haven't bought any players, but we are working this week.

"We are looking for other players. I'm waiting at this moment and I think tomorrow we will talk about other players."

Reus and Klopp scoop German writers' awards

    184092hp2.jpg

Germany attacker Marco Reus has officially been named as the best player of the 2011-12 Bundesliga season thanks to his performances for Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 23-year-old led the Foals' surprising charge to a fourth-placed finish with 18 goals and a further 11 assists, earning a move to Borussia Dortmund in the process.

Reus won a total of 217 votes from the German Association of Sports Journalists, beating his now Schwarzgelben teammates Mats Hummels, who received 108 votes, and Robert Lewandowski, who got the nod from 95 writers.

Despite Gladbach's excellent campaign, Lucien Favre was unable to secure the award as the best coach, finishing second with 138 votes, with Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp scooping the accolade with 496.

The Ruhr giant put together a 28-match unbeaten run to retain their Bundesliga title ahead of Bayern Munich, and completed a domestic double by beating the Bavarians 5-2 in the DFB-Pokal final.

Borussia Dortmund will have the chance to get its 2012-13 campaign off to a winning start when they face Jupp Heynckes' side in the DFL-Supercup on Sunday.

Arsenal target Yann M’Vila in no rush to leave Rennes

    155512hp2.jpg

Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila has said he is in no rush to leave the club after chairman Frederic de Saint-Sernin revealed the player had received a “concrete offer” from England.

Arsenal has repeatedly been linked with a move for the France international for some time, despite manager Arsene Wenger having previously ruled out signing the 22-year-old.

However, M’Vila has now given his thoughts on the saga, saying he is happy to stay at Rennes but refusing to rule out the possibility of a move.

“For the moment, I am here, I am well, I'm not complaining, I play,” he said. “I must play good matches. While I am here, I am [at] the disposal of the coach and I must do the best possible. The transfer window ends on September 4, so I will not lose my head.

“If I must stay another year or more, I will stay. If I must go, that's life. But if I stay here, I will be 100 percent concentrated.”

Arsenal has enjoyed a busy summer in the transfer market already, bringing in Lukas Podolski, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud, although captain Robin van Persie’s future at the club still remains in some doubt.
