Juventus caretaker Massimo Carrera impressed with Paul Pogba

    108575hp2.jpg

Juventus caretaker manager Massimo Carrera has been impressed with Juve's summer signing Paul Pogba and the team's preseason preparation as they look to retain its Serie A crown.

Speaking to the club's official website after their annual preseason friendly at Villar Perosa, where they triumphed 5-1, Carrera praised the 19 year-old Pogba.

“He’s a good player and above all a young talent... and can improve a great deal by training alongside champions,” Carrera stated.

Touted as a future France captain by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the talented midfielder turned down a new Manchester United contract in order to complete his move to Turin earlier this summer.

“It was a good workout for us,” added the former defender. “We’re about 70, 80 percent there and we also showed a good engine against Napoli by striving all the way to the bitter end.

“Our next appointment is in the Berlusconi Trophy on Sunday against Milan. We’ll assess the lads’ condition first and then decide who to play.”

Carrera does not face too many injury problems ahead of the upcoming campaign, although he is cautious to rush club vice-captain Giorgio Chiellini back into action.

“Chiellini missed out as a precaution [yesterday],” Carrera said. “He warmed up, but we decided against risking him.”

Dempsey: The truth will come out soon

    200319hp2.jpg

Clint Dempsey has hit out at claims that he has refused to play for Fulham in an attempt to force a move away from Craven Cottage.

Manager Martin Jol told the media on Friday that last season’s top goalscorer is keen to switch to a Champions League-chasing club and has subsquently withdrawn from Saturday's matchday squad to face Norwich City. However, Dempsey has seemingly rejected these assertions via his Twitter profile.

"There are two sides to the story," Dempsey wrote. "The truth will come out soon."

The 29-year-old's future has appeared to be up in the air ever since he was left out of the club's preseason tour of Switzerland last month, even though a source close to the player has denied the claim that he pulled out of the tour.

Chelsea enters season with new players, a new attacking style and confidence

    187300hp2.jpg

Since being rebranded from the UEFA Champions Club Cup to the UEFA Champions League in 1992, no club has ever repeated as European champions - not even Lionel Messi's Barcelona.

But Marko Marin believes Chelsea is in a good position to make history after defeating Barcelona and Bayern Munich en route to winning Europe's top prize last season.

"Yeah, [I believe Chelsea can repeat]," the Blues' new midfielder told Goal.com. "The team changed a lot, but there's a lot of high quality here."

Marin is one of the major additions to Chelsea this summer, joining Eden Hazard and Oscar as the club's newest key members. But while the Premier League team certainly improved its roster, veteran Frank Lampard points out that other contenders have boosted their squads as well.

"Every year is very tough and we had an amazing year last season. We will try our best to do it and of course, it's a possibility but every other team will be stronger," Lampard explained. "Barcelona will be strong again, Real Madrid will be strong and you have the Italian teams so every year its very tough."

It isn't a blunder by the team's scouting department that Hazard, Oscar and Marin are versatile attacking midfielders, as Chelsea is looking to transition from a defensive style to an entertaining strategy that values ball movement and possession.

While previous managers have struggled in making Chelsea into an attacking side, Roberto Di Matteo appears set to change the way things are done on the pitch. The Italian, who coached the team last season on an interim basis after the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, gets offended when analysts point to Chelsea's negative tactics as the reason why it won the Champions League title.

"I think you need to correct your thinking on that," Di Matteo said during a press conference when Goal.com asked if Chelsea is transitioning from a defensive style to an offensive one. "Aside from a few matches, there were plenty of games where we put up a lot of goals."

Part of Matteo's feisty response is due to the fact that prior to his promotion as interim manager at Chelsea, he was known primarily as a offensive coach. A few years ago, he led his West Brom side to promotion with one of the most aggressive attacking styles in English football. In fact, Matteo was controversially fired from the club due to its midseason defensive woes.

Matteo clearly has a lot of pride in his offensive philosophy, and Chelsea players can already see that the team is looking to change its strategy this season.

"We have some young players with very good technical ability, very attacking with a lot of fair," Frank Lampard told reporters during Chelsea's recent U.S. tour. "Hopefully, if we can get the balance right and help them get into the team, we can have a successful season."

Gary Cahill agreed with Lampard and believes both Marin and Hazard have adjusted well to the team so far.

"I think they've bedded in really well and it can take a while you first come to a new club and get used to new players," Cahill told Goal.com. "They've looked really promising, really sharp. I think we'll just go from strength to strength."

Chelsea will need its newest signing to fill the boots of Didier Drogba, who left England for China following his Champions League-winning goal. Marin admits that it will take a while for the Blues to adjust after losing club legend.

"There's also a lot of good guys who left like Didier Drogba," Marin said. "We are a younger team now and we'll likely have to beat Barca. They are a good team too but we will do our best."

Chelsea's lack of chemistry could be partially seen in its 3-2 loss to Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend. The team's newfound focus on offense led to several mistakes in the back including right back Branislav Ivanović's clumsy tackle that saw him receive a red card. Still, even in that loss, Chelsea had some promising signs.

Fernando Torres looked confident in Chelsea's opening match, no longer being in Drogba's shadow and scoring the opening goal. It also looks like the team's young English players in Daniel Sturridge and Ryan Bertrand will provide spark off the team's bench.

So if it all comes together, Chelsea's ambitions don't look misguided.

"It would be nice [to win Champions League again]," Cahill said with a slight laugh. "It was a fantastic achievement last year and obviously the game was huge because we needed the game to be a part of the competition this season.

"It was massive and obviously a great moment in the club's history. So yea, we'll try hard for sure. "

Team's starting goalkeeper Petr Cech states that the club's players have to live up to the ambition of the club and its big spending owner.

"Everything is possible in football," Cech told Goal.com. "We will try to go after every competition that we are in this year. We are going to aim for every trophy we can possibly get. So we are looking forward to the season and so far, it's been going great. "

Universidad de Chile confirm Manchester United move for Angelo Henriquez

    170420hp2.jpg

Universidad de Chile striker Angelo Henriquez is set to join Manchester United, the Chilean club has confirmed.

The 18-year-old will complete the move before the end of August, after undergoing a medical earlier this week, to become the first Chilean ever to play for the club.

Henriquez is one of the most sought-after players in South American football having notched up an impressive 10 goals in 15 league games, while he has also been prolific for Chile at Under-20 level.

"Angelo Henriquez will join Manchester United this month," Universidad de Chile said in a statement.

"The player is physically and mentally prepared to take this determining step in his career."

President Jose Yuraszcek added: "Manchester United's representatives told us that it was fundamental for them to take him now."

Henriquez, who made his debut for the club earlier in the year, confirmed the move earlier in the week, describing it as "a dream".

"I am coming to stay at Manchester United and I'm going to play to obtain that objective," Henriquez told La Tercera.

"They are giving me this opportunity and I can't let it go, it is something that I have searched for my whole life. It's a dream I have always had and I can't afford to not want to be here.

"Everything is spectacular here in Manchester. For me it is all a dream. Imagine it, just to be able to play and share a dressing room with people like Wayne Rooney. It's a dream."

Henriquez is believed to have rejected an approach from Manchester City to sign for United.

Hugo Sanchez: Guardado is perfect for Valencia

    202416hp2.jpg

Former Mexico player and coach Hugo Sanchez has expressed his delight at the move of fellow countryman Andrés Guardado from Deportivo La Coruna to Valencia on a four-year contract.

"Valencia is one of the great and important teams in Spanish football," Sanchez told a press conference.

"I am convinced that Valencia will have a very good performance this season because the strong personality and leadership of Andrés," he added.

Guardado represented his country in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, scoring 13 goals in 82 international appearances.

Sanchez is certain that the winger will be an immediate success at his new club, praising his playing style and talent: "He is going to shine, like he has always done."

The former Real Madrid striker also commented on the future of Manchester United's Mexican poacher Javier Hernandez, whose game time is likely to be reduced by the arrival of Robin Van Persie from Arsenal.

"Javier has many qualities that he will continue to show and what he will need is continuity because when they gave it to him, he showed that he was effective," he claimed.

Guardado is likely to make his Valencia league debut away at Spanish champions Real Madrid on Sunday evening.

    Tevez primed for title defence

    carlostevezteamceleb20120812_576x324.jpg

Carlos Tevez says he has never felt in better shape as Manchester City prepare to defend their Premier League title.
Tevez was AWOL for much of City's first league triumph in 44 years, but returned to play a key role for the club in the closing stages of the season. After scoring in City's Community Shield victory over Chelsea last weekend, Tevez insists he will be firing for Sunday's clash against newly-promoted Southampton.

"This is the best I've felt ahead of a new season," Tevez told the Sun. "For the first time in four or five years I've had a full month of pre-season training. "This has not happened in previous years because of national team commitments so I'm feeling in good shape. I did all the pre-season and the truth is I feel great."

Earlier this week, Tevez stated he once again feels "valued" at City and confirmed he is now in a positive frame of mind and focused on achieving back-to-back titles with the club."The pre-season games went well, I was pleased with how I played," he said. "I'm feeling good here, all the problems are the past and the truth is I'm happy.

"Now I feel settled, I feel good in myself and I'm working hard, the main aim is to be champions again."

    Dempsey refuses to play

    clintdempseyusa20120608_576x324.jpg

Clint Dempsey has been fined for refusing to play for Fulham this weekend, but ESPN understands that the American does not want to play for the club ever again.
Dempsey, 29, has been at Craven Cottage since 2007 but, with his contract due to expire next year, has signalled his intention to move on this summer and wants to test himself in the Champions League.

The USA international was left out of the club's pre-season training camp in Switzerland amid speculation about his future and will not feature in Fulham's Premier League opener at home to Norwich City on Saturday. Manager Martin Jol confirmed that Dempsey wants to leave, but said the forward will only be sold if the club receives a suitable bid.

"Clint was not involved over the last four weeks, so he is not going to be in the squad," Jol said. "He is not committed to the club. He wants to leave. I would like to keep him, but I think it's impossible. It's a sad and an almost embarrassing situation."However, an ESPN source has confirmed that Dempsey's desire to leave means he is refusing to play for the club again."The player is refusing to play for the club," the source revealed. "He has refused to play in the opening game tomorrow, and he is refusing to play because he wants to go.

"It is very embarrassing for the club but the club is working hard to find a solution, but it is a difficult one. Clint has been linked to Liverpool all summer but Fulham have not received an offer from Liverpool for him or indeed an offer for him from any club.

"What action, if any, the club is taking will remain private, but the priority is to find a solution, rather than confirm or deny the club plan to fine the player."Liverpool have been the club most strongly linked with Dempsey, with manager Brendan Rodgers having confirmed an inquiry was made.

At one stage, the website for the Massachusetts-based news channel New England Sports Network (NESN), owned by Fenway Sports Group, published a story suggesting the deal was done, but it was removed soon afterwards."That was very disappointing," Jol said. "There was never an offer. Clint himself told everyone he was going to Liverpool before he came back, so we really thought there was quite a firm interest in him.

"Even [Rodgers] told everyone he was interested in Clint Dempsey, but our people never had an offer on the table, so it's almost embarrassing. If you have shown interest in a player, especially in England, you have to follow it up with an offer. They didn't."

He added: "Maybe Liverpool will come back. I can assure you that our chairman is strong enough. At first we didn't want to get rid of him, later on we had to change our position - but our view is that we won't let Clint Dempsey go on the cheap, that's for sure."

Jol was also quick to express his disappointment at the recent conduct of Moussa Dembele's agent, denying that there had ever been interest from Real Madrid. Jan de Visser, Dembele's representative, had made comments to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf indicating that a bid had been made by the Spanish side. The Fulham boss said: "I spoke to his agent and I said to him it's not the cleverest thing to do, to speak about players. There was no offer on the table (from Madrid) and hopefully the situation will stay as it is. Hopefully Dembele will stay here.

"There was one low bid from one Premier League club, very low. Moussa is quite happy here. He wants to play here and if something happens, we will have to wait.''

Ligue 1 is on the up, says Paris Saint-Germain's Claude Makelele

    161040hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain assistant coach Claude Makelele believes that the increasing number of foreign players plying their trade in Ligue 1 is improving the quality of the league.

The former Marseille midfielder, who also earned 71 caps for France, feels that the gap is closing between Ligue 1 and the likes of La Liga and the Premier League.

'''For a time it [Ligue 1] was at the same level as Spain or England,'' Makelele told Ligue1.com.

''The level dropped a little bit because a lot of players, the best French players, moved to another country like Spain or England. I think now it’s different. The big players are coming back to the country and that's making the level stronger.

'Buy him instantly' - Krul reveals his advice to Pardew over new signing Anita

    198298hp2.jpg

Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul has revealed that manager Alan Pardew sought his advice before signing Ajax midfielder Vurnon Anita.

The Mapgies signed the 23-year-old Netherlands international for 6.6 million pounds on Thursday as they aim to improve on last season's superb fifth-place Premier League finish.

And Krul revealed that when Pardew turned to him for his opinion of Anita, the advice he gave was pretty simple.

"When the manager asked me about Anita, I said ‘buy him instantly'," Krul told Algemeen Dablad.

"He gives us a lot of quality in midfield. England is known for kick and rush, but he's the man who can connect defense and attack perfectly."

Krul, who enjoyed a very successful season between the posts for the Magpies, is also delighted that his compatriot's arrival has doubled the Dutch contingent plying their trade on Tyneside.

"I'm really glad that he came to Newcastle, I still know him from the Under-15 Netherlands team," he added.

"After the club went on a French tour, I'm glad there is another Dutchman in the team now."

Arsenal 0-0 Sunderland: Defiant Black Cats frustrate new boys Cazorla, Podolski and Giroud

    203735hp2.jpg

Arsenal started life without Robin van Persie with a 0-0 draw against Sunderland as the Gunners couldn't find a breakthrough against a resolute Black Cats defense.

Arsene Wenger's sides's best chances of the game fell to new boy Olivier Giroud who somehow fired an effort past the post with only Black Cats keeper Simon Mignolet to beat from inside the box. Santi Cazorla also had a few decent efforts but couldn’t find a way past the Belgian international.

The Wearsiders best opportunity fell to James McClean in the opening minutes but he was denied by a good save from Wojciech Szczesny. Arsene Wenger’s side pressed late on but couldn’t force a winner as both sides settled for a point.

Wenger handed Premier League debuts to summer signings Podolski and Cazorla. The German international was part of a three pronged attack alongside Gervinho and Theo Walcott while the Spaniard joined Abou Diaby and Mikel Arteta in the center of midfield.

Alex Song wasn’t named in the squad while Thomas Vermaelen took the captain’s armband replacing Van Persie as the Gunners' third captain in three years.

The visitors started the game in confident fashion and could have taken the lead through McClean in the opening minutes as he was played through one-on-one with Wojciech Szczesny but the Irishman couldn’t beat the Gunners keeper who made a good save with his feet.

Arsenal went straight on the counter attack and Cazorla jinked past several Black Cat defenders before firing a vicious left-footed shot at goal which was turned away brilliantly by Simon Mignolet as the ball was swerving away from him.

Brilliance from Gervinho nearly carved out a goal for the Gunners, as he beat Gardner with a swift turn and jinked past O’Shea before crossing for Cazorla whose left-footed shot went just past the post of Mignolet.

Arsenal was becoming more threatening as the half progressed and Mignolet had to be at his best to deny it as Diaby raided forward from midfield and looked to place the ball in the bottom corner but the 24-year-old stopper was there to turn the effort past the post at full stretch.

The second half started in the same way as the first ended as the Gunners dominated possession but struggled to break down a resolute Sunderland defense with O’Shea in particular good form at the heart of the rearguard action.

The Gunners kept knocking at the door and pressing forward and thought they’d had found their way through at last when Cazorla found Giroud in the box with a lovely pass leaving him one-on-one with Mignolet but he somehow blazed his effort past the post.

Arsenal continued to press but couldn't find a breakthough as Sunderland held onto the claim a point at the Emirates Stadium.

West Brom 3-0 Liverpool: Lukaku seals victory as Agger sees red to cap miserable day for Rodgers

    203774hp2.jpg

Steve Clarke has begun his career as West Brom manager with an emphatic 3-0 win over Liverpool at the Hawthorns on the first day of the new Premier League season, with Daniel Agger seeing red for the visitors.

Zoltan Gera, Peter Odemwingie, Romelu Lukaku all scored in West Brom's dominating performance.Liverpool was the better of the two teams in the first-half but fell behind late in the first period as Zoltan Gera fired a sensational half-volley into the top far corner.

The second-half followed a similar pattern and although Pepe Reina saved a Shane Long penalty, he could not stop Odemwingie's spot kick or Lukaku's late header as Bredan Rodgers endured a miserable start.

Despite bringing in a number of players over the summer, only one new signing started for the Baggies as Claudio Yacob sat alongside Youssouf Mulumbu in midfield, while the likes of Yassine El-Ghanassy and Romelu Lukaku started on the bench.

Both of Liverpool’s summer signings had places in Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI at the Hawthorns, as Fabio Borini partnered Luis Suarez in attack, and Joe Allen sat deep with Lucas Leiva in midfield, while in defence Glen Johnson started at left-back due to the unavailability of Jose Enrique.

The match started in a lively fashion and fairly end-to-end, with Luis Suarez having a good opportunity on the break, then seconds later Shane Long was fouled on the edge of the Liverpool area after springing his own counter-attack, but Steven Reid wasted the free-kick.

Suarez was involved again a few minutes later as he cut inside and into the penalty area from the left-hand side, but just as Steven Gerrard was able to fire the forward’s cut-back goalwards, West Brom debutant Yacob was in the right place at the right time to make the block.

Suarez was certainly looking the most likely player to create something for Liverpool and he went close on 26 minutes. Borini flicked the ball on with a header and the former Ajax man surged into the area before shooting for the bottom corner, but he could only find the side netting.Glen Johnson did brilliantly down the left, beating Reid with consummate ease before crossing left-footed to the back-post, but Suarez headed over from six yards out, and the hosts remained level.

Johnson was looking typically effective going forward for Liverpool, but at the back he was as suspect as ever and conceded a free-kick in dangerous area in the final moments of the first period as he brought Peter Odemwingie down from behind, and Liverpool were punished.Reid’s free kick was put behind, but from the resulting corner the ball was headed out as far as Gera who half-volleyed a wonderful strike into the top corner of Pepe Reina’s goal from 25 yards out, and the hosts went into the break one up.

The second half started significantly quieter, but with within five minutes Liverpool was in control of the ball, and Suarez almost found the top corner with a free-kick, but his effort sailed just wide.

Liverpool’s final ball was letting them down, particularly their crossing, and soon West Brom had the perfect opportunity to double their lead. Shane Long latched on to a clearance and his pace helped him get the better of Daniel Agger, who was forced to bring him down in the area, with the Dane subsequently sent off.Long stepped up for the spot-kick, but his woeful effort was not hit much harder than an average back-pass, and Reina easily got down to his right to make the save.

Barely three minutes later however, Long made amends as he won another penalty for the hosts, this time being brought down by Martin Skrtel as he stole the ball from the Slovakian, and Odemwingie buried the kick to make it 2-0.

Following a few crazy minutes and the goal, Liverpool were back in control but still finding it hard to break West Brom down, with their midfield providing virtually no cutting edge and they almost found themselves 3-0 down.

Yacob played the ball forward to substitute Lukaku who brilliantly spun his marker before marching towards goal with just Skrtel to beat, and then instead of shooting he squared it to James Morrison in the area, but the midfielder skied his effort from 12 yards out.

However, they did not have to wait much longer before their third goal of the day as Liam Ridgewell dinked a lovely ball to the far post, and Lukaku towered above everyone else to nod in and seal the three points for the hosts with 14 minutes to play.

Lukaku nearly made it four two minutes later as he beat Jamie Carragher before shooting, but it was deflected wide, while Suarez headed just past the post seconds later down the other end, but Ben Foster’s cleansheet was still intact.

The young Belgian striker was looking like a man with something to prove following a quiet campaign last year and he was combining excellently with his new teammates as he probably could have got himself a hat-trick in the final 20 minutes.

Liverpool continued to press for late goals, even introducing the apparently unwanted Andy Carroll, but they could not find the net and the Baggies recorded an eye-catching victory.

West Ham 1-0 Aston Villa: Nolan strike secures three points for promoted hosts

    203755hp2.jpg

It was a happy return to the Premier League for West Ham and Sam Allardyce as Kevin Nolan's close-range effort secured three points against Aston Villa.

Allardyce and West Ham will make no apologies for their means of securing Premier League survival this season as free kicks and set pieces look to be the focal point of attacks at Upton Park. It was a dead ball situation which helped provide the only goal of the game as Villa's reliance on an offside decision which was never awarded was punished by Ricardo Vaz Te, who pulled a pass from the byline for Nolan to sweep home five minutes before half-time.

Despite the defeat, Paul Lambert would take pride in his side's opening to the game as his new recruits seamlessly interlinked in midfield to dominate possession. A cause for concern for the Aston Villa manager will undoubtedly his team's inability to fashion clear-cut chances for Darren Bent, along with the manner of their conservative second half showing which failed to fully test the rigours of West Ham's back line.

In spite of the electric atmosphere created by the Upton Park faithful, Allardyce's men were timid in the opening exchanges as Aston Villa dominated possession. Brett Holman spurned the first chance of the afternoon to test Jussi Jaskelainen after he found a pocket of space outside West Ham's area but blazed his right-footed effort wide of the goal.

Villa continued its dominance in possession and looked transformed from the languid unit which limped to an uninspiring 16th-placed finish in the league last year under Alex McLeish. Karim El Ahmadi was tidy in possession in central midfield alongside Fabian Delph, who mirrored the Morocco international superbly, while Stephen Ireland showed a neatness and vision on the ball which has seemed to desert him since his days at Manchester City.

West Ham was a contrast to their opponents. Aside from Mohamed Diame, who offered composure on the ball in central midfield, the hosts showed little intricacy in attack, the extent of which reduced Carlton Cole to fruitlessly chase a series of aimless long punts into the final third.

But as a set-piece brought West Ham its best chance of the game after 36 minutes as Kevin Nolan's free kick whistled low past Shay Given's goal, it was a dead-ball situation which provided the hosts with the lead four minutes later.

A Mark Noble free kick was swept into the box and as James Collins flicked the ball on, the Villa defence stood on ceremony for an offside decision which never came. Ricardo Vaz Te collected the ball on the byline and pulled a pass back to Nolan who calmly slotted past Given.

West Ham started brightly after halftime and saw a penalty shout turned down after Cole raced onto Guy Demel's superb threaded pass on the right flank and was hauled down by Ron Vlaar.

The hosts continued its positive opening to the second half and were able to quash the spells of possession which made Aston Villa a force before the interval. Both Delph and El Ahmadi struggled to replicate their interplay, while Darren Bent was starved of service in attack as he played on the shoulder of Winston Reid.

Aston Villa struggled to replicate the dominance they displayed in the first half, while West Ham continued to probe. Vaz Te offered a glimpse of his talents which a dazzling dribble on his side's right flank which left Nathan Baker in a spin.

West Ham had the chance put the tie beyond doubt 12 minutes from the end as Cole fired his header wide of Given's post from Matthew Taylor's free kick, while the man who came on to replace the striker for his home debut, Modibo Maiga, saw his effort cleared off the line in injury time.

Reading 1-1 Stoke: Late Le Fondre penalty rescues a point for Royals on Premier League return

    203748hp2.jpg

Reading salvaged a late point on its return to the Premier League after late drama at The Madjeski Stadium saw 10-man Stoke throw away two points.

Debutant Michael Kightly opened the scoring on 35 minutes after some poor goalkeeping from Adam Federici, saw his deflected shot squirm through the hands of the Australian.

Stoke dominated for large periods of the game, but when the lively Gareth McClearly was clumsily brought down by Dean Whitehead, who was sent off for the challenge, Adam Le Fondre coolly slotted home his first Premier League goal to snatch an unlikely point for The Royals a minute from time.

Reading welcomed three new signings into their starting lineup, with Chris Gunter, Danny Guthrie and Pavel Pogrebnyak taking their bows, while Kightly, recently signed from Wolves, was the only new face in a settled and experienced Stoke team.

Veteran left back Ian Harte quickly appeared to be the Royals’ main source of creativity, delivering a number of decent crosses using either foot in the opening minutes as he sought to find the towering Pogrebnyak in the penalty area.

The hosts had started out on the front foot, with the occasional sign that the Russian was to pose problems for the Potters’ back line, but there were few clear-cut chances in the opening 20 minutes.
Indeed, it was Stoke which came closest when Jonathan Walters, perhaps frustrated at a lack of possession, seized his chance from the far left to curl an ambitious effort over the bar.

It looked like the opening goal was most likely to come aerially but it was Guthrie, rather than Harte, who nearly carved it out from a corner as the midfielder swung one out with his right for Kaspars Gorkss to find space and head not far wide.

Walters then went even closer as he was afforded too much space in the box to run and meet a Stoke free kick, nodding it just wide of the far post.

The Ireland international was perking up and followed his near miss with a canny snapshot from deep that was saved by Federici. The Australian goalkeeper, though, lost his concentration a few minutes later.

Reading had given itself a problem with Gorkss’ poor header in the box falling straight to the unchallenged Kightly but, despite initially saving the winger’s shot, Federici inexplicably let it drop into the net under him to give the visitors the lead 10 minutes before half-time.

Stoke was keen to build on their one-goal cushion as they pressed on, and Walters went close again. Begovic had launched a free-kick far up the field, and after receiving a flick on, the former Ipswich striker fired from a tight angle, but this time Federici was equal to it.

However, Reading was keen to fight back after going a goal down and after doing so well to latch onto the ball on the right hand side of the penalty area, Adam Le Fondre would’ve been disappointed to see his low shot sail wide of the goal.

With three minutes of added time still to be played, Reading were keen to snatch a goal to make Tony Pulis tear up his halftime team talk notes, and it was that man Le Fondre who again had a decent chance to level the score.

Guthrie crossed into the box after the Royals won a throw-in, and his ball found Le Fondre, but the 25-year-old headed wide from only six yards out.

Neither manager decided to make a change at the break, with Reading needing to attack more after seemingly being on the back foot in the first half.

And after a slow start, Stoke could’ve extended their lead had it not been for the heroics of Reading defender Gorkss. Whitehead played a magnificent crossfield ball to Crouch, who nodded it across the goal to Walters, but the 28-year-old couldn’t sort out his feet and Gorkss cleared the danger excellently.

Pogrebnyak grew into the game and just after the hour mark used his height to knock the ball forward in between Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross, he went down rather easily under the challenge of Huth on the edge of the penalty area, but Kevin Friend was not interested and correctly waved play on.

New signing McClearly replaced Hal Robson-Kanu for the game's first change, with Brian McDermott looking to inject some more pace into the game and possibly grab an equalizer.

However, Stoke moved up a gear and started to dominate possession, with Pogrebynak being frustrated up top and chances at a premium.

Pulis opted to bring off goalscorer Kightly, applauded as he left the field, and replaced him with Cameron Jerome, and as a result, the danger man Walters moved out to the right-hand side as Stoke chased a goal that would seal their victory.

But it was The Royals who had a decent chance. Harte's corner was headed back across goal by Pearce at the byline, and Pogrebynak misjudged his header as it went harmlessly towards Begovic.

And it was to be the former Fulham striker's last involvement, with McDermott opting to haul off his new striker in favor of bringing on Noel Hunt.

And after a period of stop-starting, with free-kicks and yellow cards becoming more frequent, the Reading equalizer arrived Friend was forced into action.

The impressive McCleary darted towards the Stoke area, playing a nice exchange with Noel Hunt, and as he got into the 18-yard area, Whitehead hauled him down, and despite Reading taking the shot, the referee had no option but to point to the spot. Former Sunderland man Whitehead was then red-carded as Begovic faced Le Fondre.

The former Rotherham man stepped up and struck a neat effort just under Begovic as he dived to his left to give The Royals what could be a vital point.

There was still time for more chances as Danny Guthrie was brought down 20 yards out from goal by Shawcross. And with Reading chasing victory, free-kick specialist Harte's effort whistled agonizingly just over the bar.

With five minutes added on and a man down, Stoke looked to waste some time, with Begovic booked for running down the clock. And despite looking so dominant for most of the game, Stoke would've been relieved to leave Berkshire with a point. United States international Geoff Cameron did not dress for Stoke in the match.

QPR 0-5 Swansea: Michu and Dyer on the double as Laudrup gets off to dream start

    203734hp2.jpg

Swansea delivered a dominant and hugely impressive display to run out 5-0 winners against a deeply out-of-sorts QPR side at Loftus Road, which saw Michu and Nathan Dyer both strike doubles.

With a quick tempo to the opening few minutes, it was Swansea which struck the first blow, with Michu's strike from the edge of the box finding a way past Robert Green in the opening 10 minutes for a rapid start.

QPR bossed proceedings from then on, but in what was quickly turning into a clinical display, in the second period, Nathan Dyer grabbed a goal on the break after some good work from Wayne Routledge, before Michu got another goal shortly after, with Routledge again the provider.

The game became more stretched from then on and the hosts were beginning to tire in the heat, but there was just enough time for Dyer to control an excellent Kemmy Agustien ball over the top before slotting home to make it four, while substitute Scott Sinclair made it five with a neat finish after a misplaced pass from Nedum Onuoha.

QPR manager Mark Hughes rang the change as he seeks to make his mark on the team after a busy summer off the pitch in the transfer market, with Robert Green, Fabio, Junior Hoilett and new captain Park Ji-Sung all handed their competitive first-team debuts, while Samba Diakite started in midfield having made his move from Nancy permanent in the summer.

Swansea boss Michael Laudrup handed Chico his debut at the heart of the back four alongside of Ashley Williams, after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham at the end of last season.

Elsewhere, Jonathan De Guzman came into midfield alongside Leon Britton, replacing Liverpool's new signing Joe Allen, while the exciting Michu, scorer of 16 goals in La Liga last summer with Rayo Vallecano started at the tip of a midfield trio. The surprising news of the day saw Scott Sinclair start the game on the bench.

With both sides enjoy some of the ball in the early stages, it was the visitors who struck first as early as the eighth minute, with new boy Michu putting Laudrup's side ahead.

After repelling a flowing Swansea attack, courtesy of a sliding tackle from Hill, the ball popped out on to the edge of the box to the top goalscoring midfielder in La Liga last season, who drive an effort first time with his left foot which slid underneath the body of Green, with the goalkeeper culpable.

The hosts responded well, though, and went close just moments later when Hoilett picked the ball up on the right flank and ran at Chico, twisting and turning him inside out before curling an effort just wide of the right-hand post with Vorm well beaten, while Taarabt had a few efforts blocked from distance.

A rare error from Vorm almost gifted QPR an equalizer, when after a spell of concerted pressure in the opposition's half, Fabio clipped a delightful ball over the top which Hoilett got in between Vorm and Taylor, but his diving header just fell wide, with the Dutch goalkeeper in no-man's land.

With Swansea struggling to get out of its own half, it took a lovely De Guzman free-kick from 30 yards out to force it up the pitch, which Green did well to tip round the post for a corner.

Wit Swansea providing a real threat from set-pieces, just a minute before half-time, Green had another error of judgement, refusing to come out for a ball in his six-yard box, and with the hosts struggling to get it clear, Michu struck the bar for the second time in quick succession with a toe-poked effort before it was hacked clear.

The second half began in the same vein, with end-to-end action on a hot, sunny afternoon at Loftus Road. Hoilett had a penalty claim in the opening minute of the period turned down, after he went down very easily under pressure from Rangel, while Michu's diving header at the other end went close.

But it was Swansea which got the crucial second goal, though, and that man Michu again popped up with the strike in the 53rd minute, in what was quickly turning into a dream debut for the Spaniard.

After Cisse's poor lay-off up the other end of the pitch, the visitors broke at pace, with Routledge driving at the heart of the back four before laying the ball inside the box to Michu on the run, who hit it first time, bending it brilliantly into the top left-hand corner.

With the onus now on Mark Hughes' side to come out and try and get a goal, Swansea broke on the break again, with Routledge once again setting up Dyer to coolly slot home past Green in the 61st minute after being put through one-on-one with the QPR back four all over the place.

With the heat really getting to the hosts, Swansea soon made it four, with Dyer again among the goals, after latching on to substitute Kemmy Agustien's chipped ball over the top, before bringing it down superbly and slotting it home past Green in the 71st minute.

But the away side wasn't done there and it delivered an emphatic finish to cap an astonishing game, with Sinclair, on as a sub, pouncing on yet another self-inflicted defensive error from QPR at the back to finish with an accurate left-foot finish into the far corner in the 81st minute.

With Hughes seething on the sidelines, Danny Graham went close to making it six with a deft header after a neatly worked corner, but the final whistle spared them any further embarrassment on what represented the worst possible start to the season.

Fulham 5-0 Norwich: Petric marks dream debut with a double as Hughton endures nightmare start

    203729hp2.jpg

A magnificent opening day performance from Fulham saw it run out 5-0 winners against at Craven Cottage, with debutant Mladen Petric bagging a brace against a dismal Norwich City.

Damien Duff and Petric had the hosts 2-0 up at halftime, before Petric, Alexander Kacaniklic and substitute Steve Sidwell completed the rout in the second half.

Martin Jol's side began the season without the wantaway American international Clint Dempsey amongst its number, but there were debuts for Croatian striker Mladen Petric - partnering Bryan Ruiz - and new right back Sascha Riether. Alexander Kacaniklic was also named in midfield.

Chris Hughton's Premier League debut as Norwich manager saw him hand debuts to new recruits Robert Snodgrass and defender Michael Turner, whilst left-back Marc Tierney returned for his first league match in nine months after injury.

The Canaries, with Grant Holt playing as a lone striker in a 4-5-1 formation, looked to ease themselves into the game against a Fulham side looking to circulate the ball with patience. Nonetheless, when the first chance did arrive in the 18th minute, it was via a mistake from Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy.

A simple pass back to the keeper was poorly cleared, straight to the feet of Bryan Ruiz, but the Costa Rican forward, an 11 million pound signing from Twente for the Cottagers last season, could only lob harmlessly over the crossbar.

Five minutes later and the story of the match again involved Ruddy, but this time it was him showing his best, with a smart save down to his right to deny John Arne Riise's angled drive, before some 90 seconds later he was forced into a smart save from Petric.

With Fulham starting to dictate the play a goal seemed like only a matter of time, and in the 26th minute the home side obliged to open the deadlock, but Hughton will have been furious with his side's defending.

The Fulham backline was allowed to keep possession, and when left back Riise wasn't pressured on the halfway line, the Norwegian hit a superb cross-field pass over his opposite number Tierney, sending clear Duff, who, having broke the offside trip, flicked the ball past Ruddy for the first goal.

Fulham was comfortably in charge of proceedings and doubled the lead in the 40th minute, with a debut goal from former Hamburg striker Petric.

Initially, his sublime through pass put through Ruiz, only for him to be denied by an excellent challenge from Ryan Bennett, but from the resulting corner Petric headed past Ruddy - despite the best efforts of a man on the line - to double the home sides advantage.

Unquetionably dissatisfied with his sides opening 45 minutes to the season, Hughton sent on striker Steve Morison for Andrew Surman at halftime, and switching his formation to 4-4-2 in an attempt to disrupt Fulham's rhythm.

In the 54th minute the game was over as a contest, thanks to a second goal for Petric.

Another neat passing move involving Diarra, Dembele and Ruiz, allowed Petric to find space 30 yards from goal, and when the ball arrived at the Croatian's feet, he rifled a left-footed shot goalwards, which deflected off Turner, and nestled in the back of the net.

Twelve minutes later, and Petric turned from scorer to provider as Fulham cut the Norwich defense apart once more to make it 4-0.

The imperious Dembele again found space and attacked the Norwich defense before feeding Petric, whose terrific backheel freed Kacaniklic, who converted coolly.

With the damage done, Martin Jol replaced the outstanding Petric, and introduced another new signing, the former Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega.

The Cottagers, in front of former manager Roy Hodgson, looked extremely impressive, terrific movement off the ball ensuring that the man in possession always had several options, and the away side simply didn't have any answer.

Steve Sidwell replaced Bryan Ruiz with 10 minutes remaining and the former Aston Villa midfielder got his name on the scoresheet in the 86th minute from the penalty spot.

Another wonderful pass from Dembele found Rodallega, who was cleaned out by Turner, who had endured a torrid debut, and Sidwell smashed the spot-kick past Ruddy, into the roof of the net.
