Di Matteo looking forward to working with Moses at Chelsea

    204434hp2.jpg

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed that Wigan attacker Victor Moses is on the brink of a move to Stamford Bridge.

The two Premier League clubs have agreed a fee, reported to be around 9m pounds, and the midfielder will now undergo a medical at the club.

Di Matteo is looking forward to working with the 21-year-old after four previous failed attempts, and has praised his progression at the DW Stadium since joining from Crystal Palace in 2010 – praising the guidance of Wigan manager Roberto Martinez.

"The clubs have agreed terms now. The player will have a medical. Subject to that he might become a Chelsea player," Di Matteo told reporters. "Roberto Martinez has done a wonderful job with this player since signing him. He's really developed him.

"He had a very good season last year and hopefully we can progress his development.

Di Matteo talked up the ability of the young attacker and highlighted Chelsea’s determination to acquire Moses’ talent as evidence of his future potential.

He added: "He can play on either wing and will give the team width. He has good dribbling ability, has pace and is powerful.

"We've tried very hard to get this player. We like him very much. He's young and hopefully he'll be the future of the club.”

Ki, who becomes the most expensive player South Korean football history following the move with the fee a reported 5 million pounds, revealed that the club's philosophy attracted him to the Swans.

Paris Saint-Germain introduces 'integral' Thiago Silva

    205226hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser El Khelaifi says the signings of Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will prove "integral" to the project he is undertaking in the French capital.

Silva and Ibrahimovic completed the transfer to France from AC Milan earlier this summer as the Paris club looks to build one of the strongest squads in the world.

"One of the best forwards in the world and the best defender in the world makes up the foundation of this project," El Khelaifi said.

The 27-year-old Silva had been unable to participate in the cash-rich Parisians' preseason preparations due to his involvement at the Olympic Games with Brazil after the transfer deal worth 42 million euros was done.

Now bearing the title of the world's most expensive defender, Silva admits his head was turned after speaking to PSG sporting director Leonardo and head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

"After speaking with Leonardo and [Carlo] Ancelotti, I was more interested [in joining PSG], and now I am here, very happy, and I believe in this project," Silva mused.

"I'm happy to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world. If I wasn't completely convinced of the quality of this team and this project I wouldn't have come here."

Silva spoke passionately about competing at London 2012, revealing that it was difficult to concentrate on Olympic matters at first while negotiations were ongoing.

"The negotiations were not easy," he said. "The situation was complicated refusal to Berlusconi. I remained quite disturbed by the negotiations at the same time I was focused on the London Games. I am not worried. There was a second negotiation and I am delighted. I'm thrilled, happy to be here with my family and hopefully have the same success in Milan."

    Chelsea confirms Moses signing

    140552hp2.jpg

Chelsea has competed the signing of Victor Moses from Wigan , bringing to an end the club's summer-long pursuit of the 21-year-old winger.

The Latics are believed to have accepted a bid in the region of 10 million pounds for the Nigerian international, with Roberto Di Matteo showing no let-up in spending during the current transfer window.

The Blues also confirmed the signing of Marseille fullback Cesar Azpilicueta earlier on Friday, and he joins Eden Hazard, Oscar, Marko Marin and Thorgan Hazard amongst this summer's new recruits at Stamford Bridge.

While Moses' switch to west London had stuttered due to Latics chairman Dave Whelan playing hardball in negotiations, the 75-year-old eventually relented to allow the Nigerian striker a move away from the DW Stadium.

Moses was snapped up by Wigan in January 2010 after he had established himself in the Championship with Crystal Palace.

Manchester United coach hails Buttner potential

    204752hp2.jpg

Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has hailed the club's latest acquisition Alexander Buttner.

"We see him as an aggressive player who knows himself. He looks always at the future," he told Voetbal International.

The 23-year-old full-back signed a five-year deal with the Old Trafford club on Tuesday, after completing his move from Eredivisie side Vitesse.

And Meulensteen believes the Dutchman's potential will see him prove to be a shrewd buy for the Red Devils.

"We brought him in because of his potential. It's not without reason that he is on the brink of playing in the Dutch squad," Meulensteen said.

He added, "That's why I said: Buttner, that's not a bad player, when Ferguson asked me about him. United is three, four or five steps higher then Vitesse. On the training ground we will see quickly if he can cope with a higher level."

Despite waxing lyrical about the former Netherlands Under-21 international, the Dutch coach admitted that Patrice Evra will prove tough to budge from the first team.

"Patrice Evra is a very experienced left back. [Evra] will not let him play in the first team very soon," he insisted.

United is still without defenders Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Johnny Evans for their game against Fulham on August 25.

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Werder Bremen: Supersub Gotze strikes late winner

    205314hp2.jpg

Mario Gotze came off the bench to earn Borussia Dortmund a hard-fought 2-1 victory against a spirited Werder Bremen at Signal Iduna Park.

Marco Reus got the hosts' Bundesliga defense off to a flying start with a goal on his league debut, before Theodor Gebre Selassie threatened to spoil the party with a 75th-minute header.

But Gotze was on hand to save the day for BVB, which never really looked in control of the match and was often troubled by Bremen's direct running down the flanks.

It was a glaring error from left-back Aleksandar Ignjovski that gifted the champions an early lead. Jakub Blaszczykowski played a poor pass towards Reus, but the Serbian defender tripped over his own feet and allowed the former Borussia Monchengladbach to collect, bare down on goal and dispatch a fine finish into the far corner.

After a brief period of goal-inspired dominance, BVB was almost caught out twice in a matter of minutes by Eljero Elia. First, the Dutch winger got the better of Oliver Kirch but scuffed his shot wide, before latching on to a sliding Aaron Hunt pass and firing straight at goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller when well-placed to equalize.

But the club went even closer after 24 minutes when Marko Arnautovic struck the base of the post with a fine volley after the hosts failed to clear their lines from Zlatko Junuzovic's corner.

Ignjovski provided a decent cross moments later, but his torrid evening at the back continued when he was booked for a last-ditch lunge on Blaszczykowski, who had the goal in his sights following a fine team move from Jurgen Klopp's men.

At the back, however, Neven Subotic and Mats Hummels looked susceptible to direct, pacey attacks and Dortmund relied on its full backs for help on several first-half occasions.

Subotic forced Sebastian Mielitz into a fine one-handed save five minutes into the new half with a powerful header from Marcel Schmelzer's in-swinging corner, while Sebastian Prodl wasted a gilt-edged chance to level the scores seven minutes later when he glanced Aaron Hunt's free kick wide.

The game opened up as the clock ticked towards the hour mark, with the visitors threatening through a couple of dangerous Arnautovic crosses, while Robert Lewandowski's direct running and aerial prowess threatened to put the game to bed for BVB.

Ignjovski was put out of his misery with 25 minutes to go when he was substituted for Nils Petersen, but the game lost none of its pace as Sebastian Kehl registered a tame shot on target among a frantic if impotent spell for both sides.

Despite never really threatening with clear-cut chances, the energy and willingness of both sides suggested that there was to be another goal before the night was out, and indeed it was Thomas Schaaf's side who drew level with just over 15 minutes remaining.

Arnautovic, this time floated a delicate cross towards Theodor Gebre Selassie, who rose highest to glance a header every bit as gentle as the cross into the far corner.

Klopp responded by throwing on Gotze for the ineffective Kevin Grosskreutz, and he was rewarded almost immediately. Following another direct run from Blaszczykowski, Poland team-mate Lewandowski turned the ball around the corner for the young German, who steadied himself and slotted a cool finish inside the post.

Petersen almost drew Werder level yet again, but yet another Arnautovic cross bounced off the substitute's hip and wide of goal.

It was a somewhat shaky start to their title defense, but Dortmund will be thankful that it has the requisite strength in depth to be able to handle such scares. For Bremen, it will have no doubt been buoyed by its resilient showing and can look forward to improved performances, despite not winning in its last 10 league outings.

AC Milan CEO Galliani to travel to Madrid for Kaka talks

    200230hp2.jpg

AC Milan remain hopeful of securing the services of Real Madrid playmaker Kaka, as CEO Adriano Galliani is set to travel to the Spanish capital to discuss a potential summer move.

The Brazil international has long been linked with a return to the Rossoneri, but the Serie A outfit's dire financial situation has made a potential transfer complicated.

Nevertheless, Milan has not given up hope of re-signing Kaka just yet, and will re-open talks in the upcoming days.

"I will travel to Madrid in the next few days. We will have to wait and see what is possible," Galliani commented to Sky Sport Italia when questioned on a potential move for Kaka.

Milan is reportedly looking to sign the 30-year-old on a free one-year loan deal, and is willing to pay 50 per cent of the Brazilian's annual 10 million euros salary.

Javi Martinez's parents urge Athletic Bilbao to agree Bayern sale

    203437hp2.jpg

The parents of Javi Martinez have urged Athletic Bilbao to let their son join Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga giants have been constantly linked with a move for the Spain international over the summer, but the Basque side's president Josu Urrutia has remained firm in his belief that the 23-year-old will only move for 40 million euros.

That fee, which meets Martinez's release clause, has proved too much for the Bavarians, but, according to German newspaper Bild, the player's parents have now implored Bilbao to let their child departed for Germany.

President Urrutia, however, has remained steadfast in holding out for 40m euros, telling Basque TV station ETB: “We rely on our players from an early age, we want them to try and end their careers here.

“We do not do business with our players. It is a part of our history. In order for a player to leave Bilbao, he has to resolve his contractual arrangements.”
Bayern president Uli Hoeness has stayed firm on the other hand, saying: “A normal market value of Martinez is only 20-25 million euros."

I had to leave AC Milan, admits Cassano

    205427hp2.jpg

Antonio Cassano has issued a damning critique of his time at AC Milan following his move to city rivals Inter.

The 30-year-old Italy international was in fiery form, slamming the influence of the Rossoneri hierarchy, while also accusing the club of being disloyal.

“When I joined Milan, I said that if I got it wrong there I ought to be locked up,” he said in a specially arranged press conference.

“Well, this time, I was not the one who got it wrong. I had to leave. There was someone above the coach who did something wrong, and I can't stand it when people take me for a ride.

“When I was ill, my teammates were very close, but this person promised so much. It was all smoke and no fire.

“The promises Milan made? Ask this other person, who is so good at turning the situation around. He gets on only with those who suck up to him, but that’s not my style.

“This time I want to deal with men who let me know when things are right or wrong. I want to be told face-to-face what the real situation is. Elsewhere, they say some things and do others instead.”

Although he pulled no punches in regard to his time in the red side of Milan, Cassano did have plenty of positive things to say about new club Inter.

“I want to thank the president, but also [head of technical staff] Marco Branca and [sporting director] Piero Ausilio. I want to thank them because they had faith in Antonio the man," he added.

“Massimo Moratti told me many things, but I won't reveal them. He wanted me here back in the days of [former boss Roberto] Mancini. However, as I was completely crazy at the time, it was right of them not to sign me.

“There was steam coming out of my ears, but now I am relaxed and calm, so it's a good decision to bring me to Inter. I am happy here.

“I had a good offer from Qatar, which I would like, but I’d love to be at the World Cup with Italy and that means playing in a real league.

"I’ve always supported Inter and everyone wanted me here, while I really wanted to work with Yuto Nagatomo. Will I debut tomorrow against Pescara? The coach will decide.”

Inter omits Maicon from squad for Pescara clash

    198544hp2.jpg

Maicon appears to be on his way out of Inter as head coach Andrea Stramaccioni has opted not to include the full-back in his squad for this weekend's Serie A opener against Pescara.

The 31-year-old is continually being linked with a move away from the Nerazzurri, with his agent claiming interest from Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea earlier this week.

Maicon did feature in the Europa League win over Vaslui on Thursday, but his exclusion from the squad for Sunday's encounter suggests a summer move could be on the horizon for the experienced defender.

Nevertheless, if it were down to new signing Antonio Cassano, Maicon would be going nowhere this summer as he hopes the right-back will stay put.

"I would be a happy man if Maicon remains at Inter," the former AC Milan forward said at a press conference on Saturday.

The defender joined Inter from Monaco in the summer of 2006 and has since made over 200 official appearances for the Giuseppe Meazza outfit.

Song included in Barcelona squad for Osasuna clash

    204510hp2.jpg

Alex Song is in line to make his Barcelona debut in Sunday's La Liga match away against Osasuna, as head coach Tito Vilanova has included the midfielder in his 20-man match squad.

The Cameroon international completed his move from Arsenal to the Catalan powerhouse earlier this week, but did not feature in Thursday's 3-2 Spanish Supercopa win over Real Madrid.

Nevertheless, all formalities have now been completed and Song is set to make his first official appearance for the Blaugrana on Sunday.

"He's only been training a few days but we've explained to him a couple of moves and we'll decide if he has to play. He's adapting quickly and he comes from a club with similar methods to Barcelona," stated Vilanova at a press conference.

Andreu Fontas, Jonathan Dos Santos and Ibrahim Afellay have been left out of the squad for the match, and Vilanova hinted that the trio could be headed for the exit door.

"I've left three players out. Until August 31 there are chances that one or other could leave but also that they could stay.

"I have to draw up a team sheet for each game. This isn't a social club, if there are people that are extra they have to be on the sidelines."

    Heynckes hints at Bayern exit

    200770hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has hinted that he could leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 67-year-old took over the reins at the Allianz Arena in 2011 after Louis van Gaal's exit, and led the club to a Champions League final in May, only to see his side lose to Chelsea.

However, he has now admitted that his age means that he will most likely leave the club in 2013, with the board set to look for a younger option.

"Let's be honest, I have a two-year contract which ends on June 30 2012," he explained to Suddeutsche Zeitung. "And then another stage of life comes to an end. I am no longer 37 years old.

"Ultimately, it's also whether they want a young or an old coach here. At Bayern one thing is important: success."

Several names have been linked with the job, and it was revealed in June that the Bavarians had already made an approach for former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

Lucien Favre, who led Borussia Monchengladbach to a fourth-placed Bundesliga finish last season, has reportedly been a long-term target for the club, but signed a new contract with his current employers in July.

Meanwhile, Bayern legend Franz Beckenbauer has admitted that he expects his former side to make a move for 38-year-old coach Thomas Tuchel.

"I imagine that [president Uli] Hoeness would consider him," he commented to Sport1.

Heynckes, who has had two previous stints with Bayern has also coached the likes of Real Madrid, Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach.

Lahm looks ahead to 'vital' Bundesliga opener against Greuther Furth

    179609hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has looked to invigorate his teammates ahead of the opening game of the season by claiming that the side must beat Greuther Furth.

The Germany international captained the Bavarians to second in the Bundesliga last season, but having seen their failure to overcome the challenge of Borussia Dortmund for the past two campaigns, the defender is now keen to wrestle back the league title.

"We have failed to win the league for two years, this year we want to focus on the Bundesliga and being Champions again," Lahm told reporters.

Ahead of Saturday's clash, Manuel Neuer echoed his captain's sentiment, adding: "We will look to beat Greuther Furth on Saturday.

"We know that we need to start well, that we need three points from the opening game. We want to show everyone, from the outset that we are strong.

"We have to prove that we are the number one team in Germany."

Swansea City 3-0 West Ham: Michu and Graham help maintain Laudrup’s perfect start

    205410hp2.jpg

West Ham was the architect of its own downfall as two defensive mistakes contributed to a 3-0 loss to Swansea City on Saturday lunchtime.

First Jussi Jaaskelainen allowed Angel Rangel’s attempted drive across goal to slide underneath his body and into the net, before Michu was able to pounce on James Collins’ weak backpass to slide in a score the Swans’ second before half-time.

Danny Graham added a third just after the hour mark to round off a thoroughly convincing win for Swansea.

Michael Laudrup named the same starting XI who trounced QPR 5-0 last weekend, but forward Scott Sinclair was absent from the bench amid reported interest from Manchester City
In one of two changes from last time out, Sam Allardyce’s new signing Matt Jarvis was given a starting berth following his move from Wolves on Friday, with Matt Taylor dropping to the bench. Elsewhere, James Tomkins replaced Ricardo Vaz Te to bolster the defense.

Swansea was jittery in the opening stages, seemingly finding it difficult to get into the rhythm of the game, and West Ham we close to taking the advantage when Jarvis nearly produced an immediate impact on his debut when his whipped delivery from the left lofted flew mere inches over the head of Kevin Nolan with his 90 seconds on the clock.

The scare woke the hosts up were soon at their fluid best, causing Allardyce’s charges havoc down the wings with Rangel particularly impressing with marauding forward runs.

And it was the right back’s adventurous nature that handed Swansea the lead after delayed his retreat back to defense to allow Jonathan de Guzman to find him just inside the area. A quick dart forward was followed by a low, driven drive by Rangelwhich West Ham goalkeeper Jaaskelainen really should have prevented from bouncing up and into the net.

And that howler was a sign of things to come for the Hammers as Collins, under minimal pressure, managed to fluff a backpass to his keeper and allow Swans striker Michu to nip in and coolly prod the ball under the advancing Jaaskelainen to nab his third goal in just two games.

West Ham was struggling to assert any sort of pressure on the Welsh outfit, with many aimless balls being pumped forward in the vague direction of lone frontman Carlton Cole.

Jarvis, however, continued to shine on his debut, as he combined well with the experienced Nolan to power a half-volley towards Michel Vorm’s goal – only to see it blocked by Chico – before the new-boy turned attempted provider once more as the winger’s flick-on saw Cole’s header cleared off the line by Neil Taylor.

Tomkins was replaced by striker Vaz Te for the start of the second half as Allardyce reversed one of his prematch changes to try and give his side more impetus.

Swansea was in cruise control after the break. They were two goals to the good and can pass the ball all day. And that is what they did.

Boasting over 70 percent possession on the hour mark, Danny Graham – otherwise quiet in the game – was set free by Leon Britton after typically patient play from the midfielder and aided by typically dire defending from West Ham, only to bend his shot the wrong side of the post with his Jaaskelainen to beat.

But Graham did not have to wait too much longer for his goal when Collins was again exposed at the back by De Guzman’s clever ball into the box towards Wayne Routledge. The winger turned quickly and dinked a smart cross towards the far post for the striker to sweep home.

The remainder of the game was played out with relative ease, despite West Ham’s attempts in vain to spark a revival, with a special moment of note for Swansea youngster Ben Davies who was handed his senior debut by Laudrup with just over five minutes remaining.

Norwich 1-1 QPR: Jackson and Zamora on target as spoils shared at Carrow Road

    205458hp2.jpg

Norwich will be disappointed it could only manage a 1-1 draw with QPR after a dominant display at Carrow Road.

Simeon Jackson gave the hosts the lead just after 10 minutes, meeting a cross from Robert Snodgrass with a header to hand the Canaries an early lead after an excellent team move which delighted the fans.

Their lead was cut short, however, when QPR equalized in controversial circumstances just seven minutes later, with Norwich debutant Sebastian Bassong bringing down Djibril Cisse in the penalty area despite replays showing minimal contact. Keeper John Ruddy then saved Cisse's weak effort, but Bobby Zamora knocked in the rebound.

The Canaries had several chances to go back in front, with the best coming from Russell Martin after the right back met Anthony Pilkington's cross, but saw his header loop onto the crossbar. But they could not find the winner against a QPR side which was largely on the back foot for the majority of the game.

It didn't take long for the deadlock to be broken after a delightful team move from the home side. Jonny Howson played the ball into Jackson, who then flicked it on to this strike partner Holt. A neat exchange between Bradley Johnson and Anthony Pilkington saw the former Huddersfield winger cross to the far post, with Jackson there to head home.

Norwich began to enjoy some comfortable possession, with Garrido looking composed at left back, and forming a well-working partnership with Pilkington on the left. However, Norwich soon found itself picking the ball out of the net after a dubious decison from Mark Clattenburg.

Junior Hoilett ran at Snodgrass down the left, twisting and turning before cutting inside and rolling a pass into Cisse. The Frenchman didn't seem to have the ball under control and went down under pressure from Bassong, and despite not appealing for a penalty, Clattenburg pointed to the spot, much to Norwich's dismay.

However, when Cisse stepped up, Ruddy did brilliantly to tip his penalty onto the post, but unfortunately for the England international, Zamora was alert to pounce on the rebound, although replays showed the former Fulham striker was in the penalty area when Cisse made contact with the ball.

At the break, Mark Hughes did the wise thing to bring off Cint Hill after enduring a frustrating first half, with Nedum Onuoha replacing him at the heart of the defense, while Hughton opted to keep things as they were, with the East Anglian club unfortunate not to be in front after an impressive first-half showing.

Norwich was happy to keep possession and Jackson again mustered a decent chance for the hosts. The 25-year-old received the ball on the edge of the box before unleashing a left-footed effort, but saw it whistle over the bar to keep the scores level.

The contest was slowly turning into an end-to-end spectacle and QPR was lucky not to concede when Onuoha and Green were caught in two minds attempting to clear a long ball. The goalkeeper was then fortunate not to be sanctioned by Clattenburg when he appeared to handle outside the area.

Bassong then had a golden chance to put Norwich in front again. Snodgrass won a free-kick on the right-hand side after being tugged by Ji-Sung Park, and the Scot's whipped delivery found the Cameroonian, but somehow headed wide from 10 yards out.

A magnificent chance then fell to Snodgrass to put Norwich back in front. A great delivery from the left by the excellent Garrido found the unmarked Snodgrass, who glanced his header narrowly over the bar to miss the best chance of the half, with The Canaries hoping they wouldn't be punished for missing their chances.

Minutes later, a frantic phase of play then saw Norwich muster a brilliant chance from the short corner. Pilkington was once again at the heart, with a superb cross from the left finding Martin, who aimed his header back to the far post but was so unlucky to see it bounce of the top of the crossbar.

It was starting to look like one-way traffic as Norwich continued to press on, and Hughes identified that his side was on the back foot, making his final substitution with veteran midfielder Shaun Derry coming on for Malian enforcer Samba Diakite in an attempt to see out the draw.

With three minutes added on, the game slowed as Hoilett went down after a clash of heads, frustrating for Norwich who then lost momentum. Cisse, not for the first time in the match, was then caught offside as QPR looked for an unlikely winner, but it would be the Norwich manager who will be unhappy that his side could not find a goal to steal all three points.

Aston Villa 1-3 Everton: Pienaar, Fellaini and Jelavic compound Lambert’s miserable start

    205467hp2.jpg

Everton continued its impressive start to the season with a dominating display which saw it defeat Aston Villa 3-1.

Despite not having won at Villa park since 2005, a stunning opening goal from Steven Pienaar, a powerful header from Marouane Fellaini and a characteristic first time finish from Nikica Jelavic seemingly put Everton out of sight before the break.

With a quarter of an hour to go, new Moroccan midfielder Karim El Ahmadi claimed a consolation goal for the hosts, but Everton ran out deserved winners.

Aston Villa was looking to put some points on the board after losing their first game of the season to West Ham. Paul Lambert taking charge of his first game at Villa Park, but was still without key players Richard Dunne, Marc Albrighton and Gabby Agbonlahor, who are all out injured.

The Villans manager made three changes to his side, with Barry Bannan, Chris Herd and Nathan Delfouneso replacing Stephen Ireland, Brett Holman and Fabain Delph.

Everton has handed new signing Steven Naismith his first start since his move from Rangers, coming in for Tony Hibbert who missed the game with a neck injury and is the only alteration from their hard fought opening victory over Manchester United, with new attacker Kevin Mirallas having to wait a little while longer for his debut.

The match got off to a blistering start, with Pienaar putting Everton ahead in the opening minutes. The visitors displayed some patient build up around the Aston Villa box, before the ball found it’s way to Naismith, who teed the South African who took one touch to set himself and then curled the ball past Shay Given from 25 yards out.

Everton remained in command for the opening quarter of an hour, with Lambert’s men not quite getting over the shock of going down so early. However the home side grew into the game and soon showed a more intent.

Despite earning more possession, it was the Toffees who once again threatened to further their lead, with Darron Gibson attempting a looping volley from 30 yards that flew close over the bar.

Everton continued its dominance of the game, and just after the half hour mark, Feillani consolidated his side’s lead with a powerful header. The central midfielder got rose above the Villa defense to meet Phil Jagielka’s first time cross with a commanding header past the recently retired Republic of Ireland keeper, who despite getting a touch, could have done more to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net.

The Toffees further increased their lead just before half time, when Leighton Baines stormed past the full back on the left wing and pulled the ball back perfectly to Jelavic on the edge of the six yard box, who places one of his trademark one touch finishes into the back of the net.

As the sides came out for the seconds half, Villa made the only change bringing Delfouneso off for Australian Brett Holman.

The visitors began the second half as strongly as they finished the first, with Jelavic threatening Given’s goal early after the break, but a brave Nathan Baker block sent the ball out for a corner.

Aston Villa enjoyed a short spell of pressure five minutes into the half, and threatened with a low drilled Matthew Lowton cross, before Bannan had two attempts on goal blocked by the Everton defense.

In the 58th minute, Gibson performed the pass of the match so far to put Jelavic through on goal, however Ciaran Clark brought down the Croatian striker, and was sent off for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity and in turn made Aston Villa’s afternoon much more difficult.

The host’s afternoon almost got worse when Sylvan Distin got on the end of a beautifully whipped in corner, but luckily striker Darren Bent was on the line to head the ball away.

Everton almost won a penalty soon after, when Jelavic went down on the edge of the box, however referee Michael Oliver gave the free kick, with replays confirming he made the correct decision.

With twenty minutes to go, David Moyes gave Mirallas his first taste of Premier League football, bringing him on for Gibson, and the Belgian almost scored with his first touch of the ball, nearly getting on the end of a fizzing cross across the box, but defender Ron Vlaar got there before the attacker to put it out for a corner.

With fifteen minutes to go, new signing El Ahmadi drove at the Everton defense through the middle of the park, and from 30 yards hit a forceful shot which Tim Howard couldn’t parry, but once more, the keeper probably should have done better.

Mirallas almost had his dream start when he got on the end of wonderful Seamus Coleman cross in the 87th minute, but the attacker had drifted half a yard offside, and the goal was disallowed.

In the last minute of the game, Aston Villa almost made the scoreline less flattering towards the visitors, when Andreas Weimann’s thumping shot hit the post, and Bent almost scored from the rebound but for Leighton Baine’s block.

Southampton 0-2 Wigan: Di Santo cracker and late Kone strike leave Saints pointless

    205473hp2.jpg

Franco Di Santo and Arouna Kone handed Wigan its first three points of the new season in an uninspiring game against newly-promoted Southampton.

Aside from Jack Cork, who was still unavailable for the hosts after picking up an ankle knock in preseason, Nigel Adkins had a full-strength squad to pick from, and decided to make a couple of changes from the side that lost 3-2 to Manchester City last Sunday.

The two goal-scorers from the game with the reigning champions, Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis, both came into the starting lineup, with youngster James Ward-Prowse and Jason Puncheon making way as the manger decided to go with a slightly more attacking shape.

Wigan was without one of its key men last term, Victor Moses, after it was confirmed that the player has signed for Chelsea, who beat the Latics on the opening day of the season. Roberto Martinez did, however, give the nod to new signing Arouna Kone after the former Levante man featured as a substitute last time out.

Elsewhere, Shaun Maloney and James McArthur both kept their places in the starting lineup after being brought off as a precaution against the Blues, while Jean Beausejour recovered from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of that defeat, but started on the bench.

There was plenty of anticipation from the home crowd down on the south-coast, after a seven year wait to see their team compete in the Premier League, but in truth the game took a little while to get going, with both sides struggling to penetrate the other's area in the opening exchanges.

Saints had the better of the possession early on though, and nearly got a breakthrough just before 15 minutes had elapsed. Lallana created a yard for himself with a neat turn before smashing a shot towards goal, and was only denied by a brilliant save from Ali Al-Habsi who tipped the ball onto the bar.

The home side continued to press after going close as Jose Fonte picked out Lambert with a long ball, the big striker getting a header on target but it proving comfortable for the Latics' keeper.

Lallana continued to be the danger man in the first-half, as he was played through on the right-hand-side by Nathaniel Clyne, however Gary Caldwell did very well to recover and knock the ball out for a corner before the Saints' youth product could get his shot away.

Again, Lallana was at the focus of the hosts' next attack. The skipper stood over a free-kick on the far side, which he whipped in at pace, the ball evaded everyone as it swerved inwards but Guly Do Prado failed to make contact at the far post, you feel he could have made more of an effort, though.

Wigan had its first chance of the game just after the half-hour mark as Maynor Figueroa blasted a first-time volley at goal from the left-hand-side of the box after Emerson Boyce's cross. Jose Fonte was in the right place at the right time as he blocked the effort without ever knowing anything about it.

As the game approached halftime, and the rainfall thickened, chances became few and far between. Franco Di Santo wasted a rare good position as Wigan counter-attacked, his shot, that may have been a cross, going wide. Then, after some decent linkup between Lambert and Jay Rodriguez, Lallana saw his attempted chip collected by Al-Habsi.

Wigan came out firing after the break and got the opening goal within five minutes. Shaun Maloney threaded a neat ball past the hosts' back-four as he turned sharply on the edge of the area. Di Santo was then clear of the back-line and smashed a strike past Kelvin Davis.

Southampton looked to hit back instantly. Minutes later, though, Lambert nearly grabbed an equaliser. The big striker turned before unleashing an effort from range, the ball looked destined for the bottom corner but Al-Habsi stretched to get a fingertip on it and push it wide.

As Saints pushed forward in search of a late point, Wigan punished them on the counter-attack as Kone got in behind the back-four after stealing the ball from Fonte, he then proceeded to smash the ball past Davis with ease, giving Martinez's men their first three points of the season, and leaving Adkins' on zero.

Tottenham 1-1 West Brom: Last-gasp Morrison equaliser denies Villas-Boas a first victory

    205485hp2.jpg

A last gasp equalizer from James Morrison earned West Brom a dramatic point at Tottenham in an enthralling contest at White Hart Lane.

The home side controlled much of the first half but was unable to find an opener. Steve Clarke's West Brom produced a much improved display in the second period, but they fell victim to a superb strike from Benoit Assou-Ekotto, which proved to be enough to hand the Lilywhites all three points.

Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas made two changes to the side that was defeated by Newcastle last week. Jan Vertonghen made his debut at center back, coming in for the injured Younes Kaboul, while Rafael van der Vaart replaced new signing Gylfi Sigurdsson in the midfield. Emmanuel Adebayor, who finally completed a permanent to the club earlier in the week, started from the bench.

Baggies' boss Steve Clarke also opted to tinker with his side, as he made a pair of changes to the team that beat Liverpool so comprehensively in the opening weekend. Marc Antoine-Fortune and Graham Dorrans replacing Peter Odemwingie and Zoltan Gera respectively.

Spurs dominated much of the opening period, with Gareth Bale causing the visitors a myriad of problems down the left hand side. However, despite the home side's superiority, clear cut chances were at a premium. Still, Villas-Boas' men should have taken the lead just after the quarter of an hour mark, as van der Vaart hit wide from close range after latching on to a Aaron Lennon pull back.

The best chance of the game came minutes later, as former Ajax man Vertonghen marauded into the Baggies' half, combining well with Gareth Bale, whose low ball into the area was deflected into the path of the Belgian defender by Claudio Yacob, however the 25-year-old could only lash his volleyed effort high and wide of the goal.

Tottenham continued to press with vigor and artistry but West Brom - who offered little as an attacking force - was able to repel their advances with increasing ease as Spurs laboured to try and find the opening goal that their play deserved.

In spite of all their industry, Tottenham failed to create many real goalscoring opportunities, van der Vaart curled a free-kick over the bar and Jermain Defoe hit an effort straight at Ben Foster, but in truth West Brom was able to hold their own and hang on till half time with relative comfort.

Spurs continued in the ascendancy early in the second half, and they were denied the lead once more as Foster produced a fine save from a Assou-Ekotto free-kick.

West Brom had spent little time in Tottenham box throughout the contest, but they almost fashioned a goal from nothing as Dorrans broke into the area before forcing a near post save from Brad Friedel.

With the home fans growing in frustration, Adebayor was thrown into the fray by Villas-Boas as he replaced insert name. Romelu Lukaku came on for Shane Long for the visitors and those two changes seemed to ignite the contest.

First Jermain Defoe had an effort disallowed for offside after he had volleyed home at the near post after latching on to a lofted ball from insert name, while at the other end Lukaku forced a fine save from Friedel, the Belgian striker firing a low strike towards goal after shrugging off compatriot Vertonghen which the American keeper could only tip away for a corner.

The introduction of Lukaku seemed to spark West Brom into life as an attacking force, and they should have grasped the initiative when Dorrans played in Fortune, however Friedel again performed heroics to deny the Frenchman from close range.

Indeed the visitors had begun to look like the more likely winners, however, they fell behind on 74 minutes when Gylfi Sigurdsson - who had just replaced Sandro - lifted a corner into the box, Jonas Olsson cleared, but only as far as Assou-Ekotto, whose long range effort deflected past Foster and into the top corner.

West Brom responded well and almost leveled minutes later when Fortune turned past Assou-Ekotto before firing a shot towards goal from a difficult angle, however Friedel stood firm and palmed the ball away from danger.

The Baggies continued to cause Spurs problems, with Lukaku tormenting Vertonghen at every opportunity. Garteth McAuley thought he had won a point for his side as he saw an effort cleared off the line. However, in the first minute of injury time they did get their reward, as Morrison pounced a poor William Gallas clearance to slot past Friedel and earn Clarke's men a richly deserved share of the spoils.
