Real Madrid agree €37m Modric deal

    lukamodriccroatia20110810_576x324.jpg

Tottenham have confirmed that they have accepted an offer from Real Madrid for Luka Modric, with the Croatian set to undergo a medical on Monday.
Reigning La Liga champions Real have been chasing Modric all summer and now finally look set to land their man after agreeing a deal with Spurs, which ESPN understands will total €37 million. The transfer also includes a "partnership agreement" that will see future player and coaching exchanges between the two clubs, as well as friendly matches.

Real Madrid confirmed the news on their official website, saying: "Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the transfer of the player Luka Modric, who will remain attached to the club for the next five seasons. Both clubs have also formalised an agreement of collaboration."

After months of negotiations, a Tottenham source told ESPN that the North Londoners were pleased with the final details of the deal.

"It might not have been a stipulation but the club were very keen not to sell to a Premier League club and are very happy he is going abroad and won't be playing against us for one of our Premier League rivals," the source said.

Spurs will use the money from the Modric transfer to fund an improved bid for Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Willian, though the club may not be willing to go as high as the Ukrainians' asking price of £20 million.

The Tottenham source added: "We are going to replace Modric and the money is available. We are looking for a creative player and Willian at Shakhtar is someone who interests the manager Andre Villas-Boas."

Villas-Boas is also understood to be keen to sign one of his former players at Porto, Joao Moutinho, though the two clubs are believed to be some way apart in their valuation of the player.

Meanwhile, Jermain Defoe will remain at the club amid interest from QPR, with Villas-Boas content with having the England striker, Emmanuel Adebayor and Harry Kane as striking options. The North Londoners are also happy to keep hold of centre-back Michael Dawson despite accepting a bid from QPR for the player.

A Spurs source told ESPN: "The club are not desperate to sell him and would be happy if he stays but he understands the position that he is no longer first choice and might not get many games. QPR made a good offer, a very good one for a 28-year old. It is now up to Michael to see whether he goes or not."

Modric: I'm at the world's best club

    lukamodricrealmadridshirtwave_576x324.jpg

New Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric declared that he was honoured to have finally signed for the club after a frustrating summer saw his move from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur drag on

Modric, who was unveiled at the Bernabeu on Monday following the completion of his €37 million transfer, said making the move had been an easy decision on his part.

"When I first heard Madrid were interested, nothing else mattered," Modric said. "I just wanted to come here, this is the best club in the world, with the best coach, and great players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Xabi Alonso, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria ... so many great players. I am looking forward to playing with them. It is an honour to be here and my desire is to win trophies with Madrid."

The Croatia international said that spending most of the summer training alone as talks between Spurs and Madrid continued had been frustrating, but he was now delighted with how things had ended up.

"Everything started before the Euros," Modric said. "It was hard as I wanted to be here (Madrid) as soon as possible, but sometimes negotiations go on longer than expected. Now I am very happy to be here. Of course it has been a tough time, almost one month without training fully with a team, but finally it has been done."
Modric, 26, said he had no complaints about how the transfer had been handled from any side, and was grateful for the support he and his family had received during their spell in the UK.

"I want to thank all the people at Tottenham. I had four great years there, and I enjoyed every moment. I want to thank everyone who made my life enjoyable in London. There are no hard feelings on my side, this is a new page in my life. I am looking forward."Modric said that he was now focused on winning a place in Madrid's starting XI, preferably in central midfield.

"My challenge of course is to win a place in the team. To do that I must work hard, it will be difficult, but I am ready for that. This is the biggest challenge of my career. I know I have the quality to play here. My position at Tottenham was in the centre of midfield, and I have played there for Croatia, I feel I am best there. I hope to play there (for Madrid), but I can play in other positions on the pitch, the coach will decide."

After signing a five-year deal with the La Liga title holders - with a reported annual salary of €4.5 million - Modric revealed he had been following his new team's disappointing start to the season on TV but stressed it was far too early yet to make any judgements.

"I watched all three of Madrid's games. I have to say that it is not important how you begin a season, but how you finish. There is still a lot of games left in La Liga, the Champions League and the Copa del Rey. The most important thing is how the season ends."Madrid and their new No. 19 can kick-start their season by overcoming a 2-3 first leg deficit when they face Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa decider on Wednesday.

Modric said he was looking forward to training with his new team-mates and was available to play immediately, although his disrupted pre-season meant it would be a few weeks before he was at his best.

"I feel I am ready to play, but the coach will decide. I have to be honest, I have missed games. I trained with the fitness coach at Spurs, worked hard and the 25 minutes with Croatia will have helped me. I will need a couple of games to be at the high level Madrid expect of me."

    :(Roo out for 2 months

    ROONEY2_1573266a.jpg

WAYNE ROONEY could be out for up to TWO months. And that means the Manchester United ace may miss 14 games.

Shocked medics said the horrific gash on Rooney’s right leg was among the worst of that type. The cut went through to the bone injuring the muscle in his thigh.

Boss Alex Ferguson had thought it would only sideline Rooney, 26, for a month.
Now he could miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine, United’s first three Champions League matches and crunch league games against Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea. Rooney needed 10 stitches to pull his skin together.

Another long weaving stitch will have been inserted inside his leg the length of the cut to repair the damage caused when Fulham striker Hugo Rodellega inadvertently stood on him.

Rooney, who had been axed after his poor performance at Everton, now has a fight on three fronts: To get fit, back in the team and have a future at Old Trafford.

Stoke 0-0 Arsenal: Gunners frustrated in bore draw

    205700hp2.jpg

Stoke City held Arsenal to its second consecutive goalless draw as the Gunners continued their uninspiring start to life without Robin van Persie.

The North London side dominated large periods of the game, with Santi Cazorla prominent in every attack but despite looking resolute in defence, the visitors' cutting edge in the final third deserted them at the vital moments.

Chances were few and far between throughout the encounter with new signing Olivier Giroud volleying over the best of Arsenal’s and a Jonathan Walters’ scuff the best moments of a lethargic 90 minutes.

Tony Pulis made two changes from the side held to a 1-1 opening day draw against Reading. Jermaine Pennant had recovered from a slight knock to take his place on the wing with new signing Geoff Cameron making his debut in central midfield. Dean Whitehead and Matthew Etherington were the players to make way.

Arsene Wenger also made two changes to his Arsenal side which appeared to have more than a hint of physicality about it.

The big team news came in goal, with regular number one Wojciech Szczesny missing out with a rib injury, allowing Vito Mannone to make his first appearance of the season. 6’3 new signing Olivier Giroud was given his first start for the club at the Britannia.

Much of the pre-match buildup centered around discipline, with Pulis claiming Arsenal to be a ‘dirtier’ side than the Potters.

It was Arsenal however, which used Pulis’s words as inspiration, settling into its trademark rhythmical passing game from the outset and moving the ball around with confidence and precision, with new signing Cazorla pulling the strings.

Stoke did provide a reminder of its aerial threat within the first five minutes, with Peter Crouch knocking the ball down for Walters to net from an offside position.

But the game’s first real opening fell to Lukas Podolski, the German breaking into the penalty area only to see his left-footed shot deflected wide, seemingly by the outstretched hand of Andy Wilkinson.

Podolski was involved again shortly after; his slaloming run was cynically ended by a Robert Huth block, with the resulting free kick tamely fired into the wall and then wide by Cazorla.

And Arsenal could have broken the deadlock a minute later, with Kieran Gibbs’ clever overlapping run undermined by his misplaced clip across the 6 yard box with Giroud well placed for a simple scoring chance.

The match was starting to fall into a similar Stoke-Arsenal pattern with the home team happy to soak up any pressure through two rock solid banks of four and allow the Gunners to pass the ball around in front of them.

And Cazorla and Podolski were the epitomes of Arsenal’s approach, looking lively and enterprising in their link up play, with little end product to show for it.

Despite the Gunners’ monopoly of possession, Stoke remained dangerous on the break with a strong run from Walters resulting in a Michael Kightly drive stinging the palms of Mannone.

Five minutes later, it was Stoke’s custodian Asomir Begovic’s turn to be tested, having to push behind Cazorla’s rising 25-yard drive.

And it almost came a s a relief when referee Lee Mason brought an end to a turgid first half.

It was a similar story at the start of the second period, with the match largely being played in the Stoke half.

Pennant felt he should have had a penalty when his driving run into the area was theatrically halted by Gibbs but the appeals were rightly waved away by referee Mason.

At the other end, Giroud had Arsenal’s best chance of the half, spectacularly bouncing the ball over Begovic’s crossbar from Cazorla’s beautifully flighted corner.

The introduction of England international duo Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain briefly injected some life into a tired looking Arsenal side, with first Arteta blazing over when well-placed and Abou Diaby skewing wide after getting his legs in a tangle in the six-yard box

But Walters could have nicked all three points for Stoke at the other end, scuffing a tame shot through to Mannone when set clear.

Giroud was agonizingly close to doing similar for the Gunners when his audacious 35-yard chip landed inches over Begovic’s bar.

But a 0-0 draw was the right result for a solid Stoke performance and a muted Arsenal display as both sides continue their search for a first Premier League win of the season.

Paris Saint-Germain 0-0 Girondins de Bordeaux: Ancelotti's men record third straight draw

    205837hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain is still seeking its first Ligue 1 victory of the season after once more being frustrated to a 0-0 draw, this time at the Parc des Princes against a Girondins de Bordeaux side which was seeking its ninth-successive top-flight win.

Opportunities were at a premium over the course of the match, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic providing much of the inspiration for the hosts. The visitors, meanwhile, offered menace on the break but were rarely allowed to trouble the home goal.

Bordeaux traveled to the capital with the aim of stifling their opponents, and for much of the first period their five-man defence was unmoved against an attack that was often too static and too disjointed.

Ibrahimovic was a threatening presence at the head of the home side’s attack, hinting at his class after only five minutes when he clipped an effort just too high.

PSG struggled to get in behind the visiting defense, but on the one occasion they really achieved this, Javier Pastore had an effort brilliantly turned over by Cedric Carrasso.

There was a flourish from the hosts just before the break, with Nene having a fierce drive from range pushed wide and then Alex heading narrowly wide from the resultant corner.

If Francis Gillot’s side was content to play a containing game in the first half, there could be little doubt that it was somewhat more expansive after the break as its confidence steadily grew. Landry Nguemo fizzed an effort wide of Salvatore Sirigu’s goal, but its big opportunity came when Ludovic Obraniak and Mariano combined down the right to set up Cheikh Diabate. Despite a good first touch, though, he was denied by a fine block from Mamadou Sakho.

Despite more positive intentions from the Garonne side, though, it did start to be pinned back in the final quarter of the game. Ibrahimovic, who had fired a terrific free kick just past in the opening moments of the half, nearly proved to be the matchwinner with a fine turn-and-shot following a corner.

Although for a period the passing of the home side became sharper and more intricate, it largely lacked incision in the final third. Substitute Jeremy Menez did offer some promise, but his best efforts inevitably flew straight into the midriff of Carrasso, who has now gone 11 career games without losing against PSG.

With only three points from their first three matches, the pressure will now start to mount on Ancelotti, particularly ahead of a trip to Lille next weekend that will be anything but simple.

Bojan is a player Allegri really likes, reveals Galliani

    188133hp2.jpg

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has fueled speculation that the club could soon make a bid for Bojan Krkic after admitting coach Massimiliano Allegri was keeping an eye out for the Roma forward.

This claim comes on the back of the discovery that a deal to bring former Rossoneri talisman Kaka back to Serie A would prove financially impossible, just the latest twist in a long-running saga.

The quest to sign a high-profie replacement in light of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's and Thiago Silva's departures has now led Galliani to keep an eye on Bojan, who endured a difficult first campaign at the Olimpico following his 12 million euro loan arrival from Barcelona.

"Bojan is a player liked by Allegri," Galliani confirmed to Sky Sport 24 after revealing a return for Kaka was not plausible.

It remains unclear whether Milan will win the race to sign the Catalan youngster however, with Liga outfit Malaga touted as the favorite to secure the services of the striker.

With that in mind, Galliani alluded to a deal bringing in-demand Caen prospect M'Baye Niang to Milan, following fruitful talks with the 17-year-old's agent, Oscar Damiani.

"For the moment, Niang is a Caen player, but we'll see," the official continued. "I'm hopeful for a positive outcome."

"The boy seems a good player, which explains why we have been watching him for several years. If we sign him, he'll go into the first team, despite his tender age."

Bayern target Martinez delighted to be subject of German attention

    203437hp2.jpg

Javi Martinez has admitted that he is enjoying basking in the attention of Bayern Munich's fans, as the Bundesliga giant prepares to tie up a deal with Athletic Bilbao for his signature.

The Euro 2012 winner has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him with a 40 million euro move to the Bundesliga runner-up, although the stop-start nature of the switch has led to recent pessimism whether a transfer can occur before Friday's deadlne.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old Spain international insists that despite being flattered by the rumors, he remains unconcerned, and is just going about his daily routines as per usual.

"I know the German press and fans are very interested in who I am," Martinez enthused. "It's truly great to have so much interest from Germany."

"I can’t say much else [about a transfer] though. I’m just relaxed and training training, trying to stay in shape and wait for a decision. I cannot do more than that.”

The versatile midfielder has amassed over 200 Primera Division appearances for Los Leones, reaching the Europa League final last season, only to see his side capitulate 3-0 to Spanish rival Atletico Madrid.

Coach Marcelo Bielsa has opted to leave both Martinez and Juventus transfer target Fernando Llorente out of his squads for recent Liga matches.
