Barcelona aims to overturn Vilanova ban

    204663hp2.jpg

Barcelona is readying an attempt to overturn Tito Vilanova's touchline ban, following the coach's red card in Sunday's 2-1 win over Osasuna in La Liga.

Vilanova had been sent to the stands in the 70th minute of overseeing his third consecutive win in charge of the Catalan giants, after what he claimed to be a misinterpreted altercation with a lineman.

The match referee had reported that the 42-year-old "angrily protested a sequence of play during the match after being warned by the assistant referee".

Pep Guardiola's former assistant claimed otherwise however, protesting his innocence in that he was only calling for a foul. The Primera Division runner-up has until Tuesday to submit an appeal.

Late goals from talisman Lionel Messi saw out Barcelona's victory, despite suffering an early scare, ensuring his side extended its lead over Real Madrid to five points.

Tax problems made re-signing Kaka impossible, admits Galliani

    199463hp2.jpg

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has poured cold water on the club's purported bid to re-sign Kaka from Real Madrid, following his consultation with a tax accountant to ascertain the financial validity of a move.

The Rossoneri have embarked on a summer-long search for a high-profile signing in order to pacify irate fans over the sales of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to Paris Saint-Germain, only to see their attempts to bring back the Brazilian stopped in their tracks.

Gazzetta dello Sport claims the feedback received when Galliani consulted a financial professional's opinion earlier on Monday morning was negative, and his latest statements have confirmed those claims.

"The tax problem? It's all true," the official admitted to Milan Channel. "It's impossible. We asked the opinion of a tax accountant who said it was 'too risky'."

Milan could now turn its attention to M'Baye Niang in order to reinforce Massimiliano Allegri's options, after talks of a crisis grew widespread following the side's 1-0 home loss to newly-promoted Sampdoria on Sunday.

Kaka completed a move to the Santiago Bernabeu for a fee of 68.5 million euros in 2009, but has struggled for playing time following Jose Mourinho's appointment as coach.

http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/9/en...completes-42m-real-madrid-move-from-tottenhamThe arrival of Luka Modric in a €42m move from Tottenham is only expected to further blunt the 30-year-old's prospects.

Laudrup hoping Swansea can build on impressive start

    110061hp2.jpg

Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup has underlined his desire to see the Swans continue its good start to the season in the League Cup.

The Danish boss has enjoyed an impressive start to life in the Premier League, overseeing convincing victories over QPR and West Ham which has taken the Welsh side to second in the table.

And the former Real Madrid forward is hopeful that his side can replicate that form when it takes on Barnsley on Tuesday.

Laudrup told reporters: "We want to win on Tuesday, we want to get on in the cup and then get a good win against Sunderland on Saturday so we can really enjoy our start to the season."

The ex-Mallorca coach also hailed the strength of his squad, insisting that Swansea can maintain their good run even with a heavily changed side.

"Of course it is always nice to play at Wembley but I think the most important thing is not if you make changes, it is that you always field a competitive team," he added.

"All the players know our style and after these opening games there is a lot of confidence, and the players coming in will have that confidence, and that is so important in football and we have to take advantage of where we are right now."

Fullback Ben Davies, a substitute against West Ham, is one player likely to benefit from any rotation and the 19-year-old has revealed the positive vibes currently around the club.

"I'm just very excited to be a part of what's going on at the club at the moment, especially after the wins against QPR and West Ham," he enthused. "Hopefully I can be involved on Tuesday.

"It's been a different start with a new manager. It was tough to come to terms with Brendan Rodgers leaving but Michael Laudrup has been great in training and tactically he's very easy to understand."

Giovinco sidelined with ankle injury following Juventus' win over Parma

    201264hp2.jpg

Sebastian Giovinco appears set to be ruled out of Juventus' upcoming Serie A fixture against Udinese, after tests conducted on the diminutive forward uncovered an ankle injury.

The 25-year-old, whose co-ownership status with Parma was resolved in favor of the Italian champions over the summer, picked up the knock in the Old Lady's league opener against the Gialloblu.

A medical examination has revealed a first-degree sprain combined with damage to the anterior ligament of Giovinco's left ankle, after he was stretchered off during the match following a strong challenge from Graziano Pelle.

Recent diagnosis has slated the recovery period to revolve around a two-week span, ruling the Italy international out of Cesare Prandelli's plans ahead of the Azzurri's next World Cup qualifying fixtures against Bulgaria and Malta.

Giovinco is now expected to return to action in time for Juve's meeting with Genoa on the third matchday of Serie A.

Johnson set to play for Sunderland in League Cup tie with Morecambe

    201865hp2.jpg

Martin O'Neill has revealed that new Sunderland signing Adam Johnson will feature against Morecambe in their League Cup tie on Tuesday.

The former Manchester City midfielder completed his move to the Stadium of Light on Friday for a fee understood to be around 10 million pounds, with the Black Cats also capturing Steven Fletcher from Wolves earlier on the same day for a reported figure of 12 million pounds.

The Black Cats' manager revealed the winger tried to complete the move in time for their clash with Reading on Saturday, before it was postponed due to a water-logged pitch, but instead indicated he will make his debut in the League Cup second-round clash.

"After playing for England, Adam is a lot fitter than Steven Fletcher," O'Neill said. "In fairness, Adam wanted to get things sorted on Friday, but the timing for Saturday just beat us.

"I think it would be a great opportunity for him. He will be playing."

O'Neill will be hoping that the duo can add goals to a frontline which managed just 45 last season, although Louis Saha has already been brought in as well with Asamoah Gyan leaving the club for Al Ain. The former Aston Villa boss is looking forward to seeing his new men in action, while suggesting they have more creative quality in their ranks this term.

"Fletcher gives us a bit of a new dimension. I would love to promise that we will score a lot more goals with those two in the team, but I do get the impression we will create more chances," he said.

"Johnson is a very exciting player. He just needs more encouragement to keep going. He is the type of player I love - someone who takes opponents on. I used to do it myself - without great success."

Although Johnson is in line to play for the Black Cats, O'Neill will most likely use the fixture as an opportunity to rotate his squad, just as many other managers do. However, the former Aston Villa boss insists he is taking the competition seriously, and hopes his team can put on a show for the home crowd.

"The cup tie is very important for us," he added. "We had a taste for the cup last year and the atmosphere that night against Everton in the replay was extraordinary.

"It showed just what it means to the people here. We would love to do well."

Hamsik agent rules out Napoli exit

    175423hp2.jpg

The agent of Marek Hamsik has confirmed that the midfielder will not be leaving Napoli this summer.

The 25-year-old’s future has been the subject of much speculation, with reports linking him with a move to either Chelsea or Manchester City, but his representative Juraj Venglos has quashed the rumor mill surrounding his client.

“Hamsik is excited to play for Napoli and be a talisman of the group,” Venglos told Radio Crc. “For several years, Marek has been here and he is happy because he has gained a lot of experience.

“This year, Napoli are stronger, the club have bought reinforcements since the departure of [Ezequiel] Lavezzi and [Walter] Gargano.“They will fight for the Scudetto this year.”

Hamsik was on the scoresheet, along with Christian Maggio and Edinson Cavani, as the Neapolitans kicked off their Serie A campaign with a convincing 3-0 win away to Palermo on Sunday.

Baup: M'Bia could switch Marseille for Premier League soon

    51822hp2.jpg

Marseille boss Elie Baup has revealed Stephane M'Bia's proposed move to the Premier League could progress during the coming week.

The French outfit's president, Vincent Labrune, told Canal+ on Sunday that the defender has played his last game for the club, adding that the English top-flight is his likely destination.

The club's manager has re-enforced those claims, stating that the player no longer wants to play for Les Phoceens, while also suggesting a move could be closer by the end of the week.

"Things could progress during the week for M'bia." The Marseille boss told RMC. "It's clear for me and for him: he's shown his desire to leave.

"He is still available all the same because he had a good game at Montpellier. As long as he's here, he needs to do his best. But we need to find the best solution for the club."

The Cameroon international has been linked with QPR this summer, with Mark Hughes already having brought in a number of new faces as he aims to turn the London club's fortunes around after they narrowly avoided relegation last term.

Speculation also remains over Rangers' midfielder Joey Barton's potential loan move to the Ligue 1 side, which may be part of any transfer.

If any deal was to be done, M'Bia would be the second high-profile defender to leave the club for the Premier League this summer, with Cesar Azpilicueta's move to Chelsea being officially confirmed on Friday.

Thiago returns to Barcelona first-team training after injury

    160402hp2.jpg

Barcelona starlet Thiago Alcantara is close to returning to full fitness after a lengthy injury lay-off that ruled him out of Spain's poor Olympic tournament.

The gifted youngster joined in with first-team training on Monday, being coached by new boss Tito Vilanova, as the Barca squad begin preparations for the Spanish Supercopa match against rivals Real Madrid.

The international has not featured for the Catalan giants since injuring his tibia during the Copa del Rey final last season.

Thiago has made 41 first-team appearances for Barcelona, scoring on five occasions. The 21-year-old midfielder has also represented his country three times at senior level.

Hernandez happy to learn from new Manchester United signing Van Persie

    202976hp2.jpg

Javier Hernandez is looking forward to working with Robin van Persie, insisting the competition for places will help Manchester United raise its game.

The Red Devils paid 24 million pounds to bring the Dutch forward to Old Trafford after the former Arsenal man, who netted 30 league goals for the Gunners last season, expressed a desire to leave the Emirates Stadium.

The Mexican stated that he is always keen to learn from his teammates and that Van Persie, who scored his first goal in a United shirt in his home debut against Fulham on Saturday, will give everyone a boost.

"I think in life you never stop learning, no matter what age you are. I try to learn from all my teammates, but obviously it’s great to watch the other strikers in particular," Chicharito told the club's official website.

"They have all helped me a lot and I know I will learn a lot off Robin because he is a world-class striker who has a lot to give to the team and a lot to teach us all."

The 24-year-old was left to watch from the bench as Sir Alex Ferguson's men beat the Cottagers 3-2, while the Holland forward and fellow summer signing Shinji Kagawa stole the show, both finding the net.

Hernandez, who saw his season goal tally drop from 20 to 12 last term, remained confident that he will be given a chance to impress in one of the many competitions United will feature in, stating that having to wait is nothing out of the ordinary.

"The great thing about this club is you know you will get opportunities because we play so many games in different tournaments," he continued. "There is competition for places but you always have that.

"I had that in youth teams when I was growing up and we have it here now because you need a big squad of players. There are only 11 places each week and you need to do your best to get one of those places, but it's great to have that competition because it means every player will have to raise the level of their game."

Enrique: Liverpool is aiming to emulate Barcelona

    140709hp2.jpg

Liverpool defender Jose Enrique believes the team can look replicate the style of play of Spanish giants Barcelona under new manager Brendan Rodgers.

The Reds' boss received plaudits for leading Swansea to an impressive 11th position in the Premier League table last season while staying true to his passing football philosophy, before switching Wales for Merseyside.

The Northern-Irishman's former club even earned the nickname 'Swansealona' due to their fluid attacking style, and now the left back thinks the Catalan outfit are a great example for his new side to follow.

"The best team in the world is the best example: Barcelona," the 26-year-old told ESPN. "You could see against Real Madrid a few days ago, how when they have the ball it is amazing and when they lose it, within three or four seconds they have it back.

"This is the way we try to play. We can't compare with Barcelona they are different, but we are trying to play like this. We are starting to learn but we are learning well."

Liverpool has yet to really hit top form under the 39-year-old this season, losing 3-0 to West Brom in its opening game before struggling to overcome Hearts in a Europa League playoff.

However, the Reds were unlucky not to gain all three points at home to reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday, with an individual error from Martin Skrtel handing Carlos Tevez an equalizer.

Enrique insisted that the players need to keep faith in the new system, indicating after time they will successfully adapt into the sort of side that Rodgers is trying to mold.

"I think this is the way we have to play this year," he explained. "Because there is a new manager, we need time, but if we can play like this I think we will get many points. It is like the manager wants.

"He wants the team, when we have the ball, to try to keep it but when we don’t have the ball, to do better than when we have it, press and try to take the ball."

Afellay set to leave Barcelona on loan, says agent

    201181hp2.jpg

Ibrahim Afellay's agent, Rob Jansen, has revealed that the Netherlands international is likely to leave Barcelona on a temporary basis this summer.

The former PSV star appears to be surplus to requirements at the Catalan side and was left out of the squad for the 2-1 win over Osasuna at the weekend.

Therefore, Afellay is keen to move on in order to get regular first-team football elsewhere, and a loan move seems to be on the horizon.

"He has the qualities to succeed at Barcelona, but endured a setback with his injury. It might therefore be better to try and get more playing time elsewhere. We're currently in the process of looking into the possibilities," Jansen stated to Studio Voetbal.

"We are talking about a loan move here. It all depends on Barcelona, though. They decide where their players are going. There are a number of clubs that are very concrete. We are in talks with several clubs."

Afellay joined Barcelona from PSV in January 2011, but a serious knee injury prevented him from making an impact last season.

Galliani: I never promised Cassano anything

    196215hp2.jpg

AC Milan CEO Adriano Galliani has hit back at Inter attacker Antonio Cassano following the latter's accusations that he did not keep his promise to offer the Italy international a new and improved deal.

Cassano left the Rossoneri for their arch-rival last week in a player-exchange deal also involving Giampaolo Pazzini, and stated that Galliani's behaviour was one of the main reasons for his exit after completing his move to the Nerazzurri.

Nevertheless, the Milan director has insisted that he never promised the attacker anything.

"Cassano? It's the first time that such a thing happens to me, and I also hope that it's the last time. I will only say that if I had made a promise then I would have kept it," Galliani stated to Sky Sport Italia.

"I've never made any promises when it comes to extending contracts. Especially not if we were in 2011 and then to extend a contract that doesn't expire until 2014. I wouldn't do that. Anyone can understand wherein the truth lies, but I don't want to make further comments."

Cassano made his official Inter debut in the 3-0 win over Pescara on Sunday, and provided the assist for Diego Milito's strike.

Higuain: Madrid must bounce back against Barcelona

    205846hp2.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain has voiced his disappointment with Real Madrid's 2-1 La Liga loss against Getafe on Sunday, and has urged his teammates to bounce back in the Spanish Supercopa return at home versus Barcelona.

The Argentina international gave the Blancos a 1-0 lead in the opening 45 minutes, but goals from Juan Valera and Abdel Barrada eventually helped the minnows to a surprise win.

"The coach is completely right by saying that we didn't deserve to win. This was not the game we were hoping for. We should have killed off the game while we were ahead," Higuain stated to reporters.

"We have already shown in the past that we can turn things around, though. We have to get some rest now and look ahead to the future.

He added, "We have to show on Wednesday that we are a great team. We have to bounce back against Barcelona. It will be a completely different game. We have to stay calm, because a win will probably give us our first title of the season."

Madrid was beaten 3-2 at Camp Nou in the first leg last week.

Eric Gomez: Opportunity knocks once more for Javier Hernandez

Behind the ever-present smile, the bubbly attitude and the almost annoying aura of positivity that Javier Hernandez seems to always be displaying, we can make a more than fair assumption that all the transfer talk, roster turnover and press speculation in the past few weeks has Chicharito more than a little worried.

At merely 24 years of age, Hernandez has gone from toast of Manchester to an also-ran struggling to gain minutes behind the likes of Danny Welbeck, Wayne Rooney, and yes, Robin van Persie. The wild rollercoaster ride has been a harsh introduction to the rigors of top-shelf European club football: Produce your best form all the time or find yourself on the bench...or searching for a new job.

While a sizable amount of press and fans following Manchester United reckoned that a change of scenery would be best for the Mexican international following Van Persie's arrival, Hernandez clings to the idea that fighting for minutes in one of the world's most storied clubs will pay dividends.

Just two matches into the season, it looks like his gamble will pay off.

Wayne Rooney suffered a nasty gash to this thigh that will keep him off the pitch for at least a month according to doctors, giving Sir Alex Ferguson one less high-priced toy to play with. The tactical flexibility offered by Rooney will be sorely missed by United, forcing Fergie to shuffle his pieces and potential strategies for the upcoming Premiership and Champions League (group play starts on Sept. 18) matches.

That stretch is crucial for Hernandez's future with Manchester United, if only because he is assured a larger share of minutes than he would have had with a healthy Rooney still featuring. It is then imperative for Hernandez to snap out of the summer funk that has carried over into the beginning of the 2012-13 season, most evident to those of us who saw him struggle for 90 minutes against the United States earlier this month at the Estadio Azteca.

After scoring 20 goals over all competitions in his debut season with United, Hernandez has steadily fallen off the center of attention, becoming a fringe player in one of the most stacked offensive units in the world. In Van Persie, Rooney, Welbeck and even Dimitar Berbatov, Hernandez has to wade through four national teamers every day in order to eventually crack a starting eleven. However, Chicharito is well aware that he needs to display some of that 2010-11 form that made him into a Manchester media darling.

"There is competition for places but you always have that," Hernandez told The Mirror recently. "I had that in youth teams when I was growing up and we have it here now because you need a big squad of players," notes Chicharito, who even at Chivas had to overcome established players such as Omar Bravo, Jared Borgetti, Alberto Medina and Carlos Ochoa before blossoming into the player that made the vaunted European jump.

Surely Ferguson is looking to the upcoming Southampton and Wigan Athletic matches to give Hernandez the necessary minutes to get back into form. Whether he does so supporting Van Persie or alongside Welbeck remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain: the Mexican striker needs to make his presence felt on the scoreline and hurl himself back into the manager and the press' eye for later consideration.

Even then, it seems almost irresponsible to think that Hernandez is auditioning for his own job just weeks into the Premier League season. It's common knowledge that United wants to push itself back into the fold of Europe's top teams following a disastrous Champions League/Europa League campaign, coupled with a domestic run that fizzled and left rival Manchester City hoisting its first league title since 1968.

This is not the last opportunity Hernandez will get, with or without injuries or suspensions to others. Ferguson needs all the firepower in the world to compete with the Blues and the Citizens at home as well as the Merengues and Culés abroad. This is, however, a great chance to secure bigger minutes in the future for a player whose biggest virtue is that of scoring goals in tight situations.

If that doesn't happen for Hernandez this season, we might very well see him this time next year smiling and talking highly of his situation, his manager and his teammates.

It just won't be at Old Trafford.
