Rooney slams 'nonsense' Manchester United exit rumors

    185906hp2.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has slammed reports claiming that he wishes to leave the club, dismissing them as "nonsense".

The 26-year-old was left on the bench for United's 3-2 win over Fulham last weekend as new signings Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie were handed forward roles.

The former Everton striker also sustained a gash to his right thigh when appearing as substitute in the win and is expected be out for four weeks.

However, Rooney has been quick to quell any talk of him leaving Old Trafford, taking to social networking site Twitter to calm the fears of United fans.

He tweeted: "Read the nonsense in the papers and heard what people have to say. Absolute rubbish. #heretostay"

As a result of his injury, Rooney is expected to miss England's World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine next month.

Vilanova: One of my proudest nights with Barcelona

    206447hp2.jpg

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has hailed the character of his side, despite a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in the second leg of the Spanish Supercopa on Wednesday.

A poor start for the Catalans saw them fall two goals behind early on, before Adriano was shown a straight red card to leave the club on the brink of defeat after only half an hour. However, Lionel Messi reduced the arrears with a free kick on the stroke of halftime, and Barca recovered to give Madrid a run for its money during the second half, an improvement that was not lost on the coach.

"The first half was not like us, but the second half was one of my proudest nights with the team," Vilanova told reporters after the match. "With 10 men we controlled the game and had five clear chances. We never sit back, defend with 10 and try to hit on the counter. With our players, we always play the same way and did so in the second half."

Vilanova also offered his compliments to Madrid for their victory, saying: "I would like to congratulate Madrid on winning the [Supercopa] title."

In the 221st meeting between the two sides, Los Blancos' triumph sees them move ahead of Barcelona 88-87 in the all-time ranking for Clasico victories.

Del Piero mulling over Sydney FC deal after snubbing Sion bid

    187528hp2.jpg

Sydney FC expects to know within 48 hours whether Alessandro Del Piero will accept a contract offer from the club, with the former Juventus striker having reportedly rejected a move to Swiss club Sion.

The A-League club's CEO Tony Pignata had two video conferences with Del Piero's representatives on Wednesday, lasting around two hours, and he has reportedly offered the 37-year-old a deal worth $2 million to join Sydney FC.

Del Piero had been involved in negotiations with FC Sion earlier this week but has reportedly rejected a move to the Swiss Super League club, putting Sydney FC in a much better position to lure the Italian striker to Australia.

"We spoke about football, as well as the Sydney lifestyle and the ability for him to leave a lasting legacy in the game," Pignata said on Thursday. "We presented him with what we think is a good package and we should get an answer within 48 hours."

Sydney FC has only come into the market for Del Piero after former marquee player Nicky Carle was allowed to leave the club on loan to play in the United Arab Emirates with Baniyas.

That move opened up a marquee spot, which would allow Sydney FC to pay Del Piero outside of the club's salary cap. Pignata moved quickly, confirming the club's interest in the veteran forward on Wednesday.

Del Piero would arguably become the highest-profile marquee the A-League has ever had, surpassing Dwight Yorke, Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell.

"Alessandro Del Piero is one of the true legends of football and there is no doubt that if he was to come to Sydney FC it would be huge, not only for our club and the Sydney football community, but for the whole A-League," Pignata said.

Even though Del Piero has seemingly rejected Sion, Sydney FC still has rivals for his signature, with Tottenham Hotspur and Celtic both having offered him contracts, according to the Italian media.

Del Piero played 513 league games for Juventus in 19 seasons with the Serie A club, scoring 208 goals. He also scored 27 times in 91 appearances with the Italian national team.

Messi becomes Barcelona's all-time Clasico top scorer with free kick against Real Madrid

    204184hp2.jpg

Lionel Messi is Barcelona's all-time top-scorer in Clasico clashes after netting his 15th goal in the fixture on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Argentine curled home a stunning free kick just before halftime to level the scores on aggregate at 4-4, although Real Madrid won due to netting two away goals in the first match at Camp Nou, which ended 3-2.

Messi's strike saw him overtake the previous Barcelona mark, set by Cesar Rodriguez. The 25-year-old also surpassed the forward's club record of 232 strikes last season.

Fellow Argentine Alfredo Di Stefano, who starred for Madrid in the 1960s, holds the overall record with 18 Clasico goals to his name.

    Berbatov heads to Fulham

    dimitarberbatovmatchball20111226_576x324.jpg

Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov is undergoing a medical at Fulham and is closing in on a reunion with manager Martin Jol.

Jol gave Berbatov his big break in the Premier League when he signed him for Tottenham in 2006 and the Dutchman is banking on his former player taking a wage cut to join the Cottagers. The Bulgarian international is reported to receive £100,000-a-week at United, a figure way beyond what Fulham can afford to pay.

If the deal, believed to be worth as much as £5million, is completed without any issues, Jol hopes to include the Bulgarian in his squad for Saturday's trip to West Ham.Berbatov was heavily linked with a move to Serie A with Fiorentina and Juventus both interested, but the 31-year-old is eager to remain in England for family reasons.

The former Bayer Leverkusen striker joined United from Spurs for £30 million in 2008, but has since slipped behind Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

    Man City agree Sinclair fee

    scottsinclairteamgb_576x324.jpg

Manchester City have agreed a transfer fee of £8 million with Swansea for winger Scott Sinclair.
Sinclair, who represented Team GB at the 2012 Olympics, said this summer that he would not sign a new contract at the Liberty Stadium and was looking to leave.

Swansea rejected a £6.2million offer from Premier League champions City on Tuesday. However, a restructured offer of £6.2 million with add-ons that could see the fee rise to over £8 million has now been accepted.

Sinclair, 23, will now head to Manchester to undergo a medical and hold talks over personal terms ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.Want-away Sinclair came on as a substitute and scored in Swansea's opening day 5-0 destruction of QPR a Loftus Road, but was omitted from Michael Laudrup's squad as the Swans followed that up with a 3-0 cruise against West Ham.

Reports suggest Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has already reinvested the money from the sale of the former Chelsea winger in Spain international Pablo Hernandez, after agreeing a fee of around £5.5 million with Valencia.

Hernandez had spoken of his desire to be reunited with Laudrup, who he worked under at Getafe.

Walcott will stay at Arsenal, insists Wenger

    200252hp2.jpg

Arsene Wenger insists contract rebel Theo Walcott will still be an Arsenal player when the
    transfer window closes on Friday.

Walcott has yet to sign an extension to his current contract which expires next June, alerting the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.

Arsenal faced a similar scenario earlier this summer and eventually chose to sell Robin van Persie to Manchester United, rather than risk losing him on a free next summer.Wenger, however, is adamant that the England winger will not be sold to the highest bidder before Friday evening’s transfer deadline and is hopeful that a resolution to the contract negotiations that collapsed last week can be found.

“Theo has one year to go. We want to extend his contract. I think Theo loves the club." he said.

“He is not obsessed by money, there is just a little difference [in the negotiations].”

QPR agrees fee with Real Madrid for Esteban Granero

QPR has reached an agreement with Real Madrid to sign midfielder Esteban Granero, the west London club has confirmed.

The two clubs have settled on a fee, and all that remains is for Granero to agree personal terms and complete a medical ahead of a permanent switch to Loftus Road.

Ian Taylor, the Rs press officer, tweeted: "#QPR have reached agreement with Real Madrid for the permanent transfer of midfielder Esteban Granero ..."The deal is subject to (Esteban) Granero agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. Further updates to follow on @OfficialQPR."

Should the deal be completed, the Spaniard could become the 10th new arrival of a busy summer for QPR, which is looking to seal the signing of Stephane M'Bia from French giant Marseille.

Boss Mark Hughes is also believed to be interested in Granero's Real Madrid teammate Ricardo Carvalho, who has been told by Jose Mourinho that he is not in Los Blancos' plans for this season.

Xavi: Barca could have beaten Madrid with 10 men

    205227hp2.jpg

Xavi has insisted that Barcelona had every chance of beating Real Madrid on Wednesday, despite the fact that the club was reduced to 10 men even before the halftime whistle due to Adriano's dismissal.

The Catalans were beaten 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu, meaning that their arch-rival pipped them to the Spanish Supercopa on away-goals following Barca's 3-2 win in the first leg.

Nevertheless, the influential midfielder saw plenty of positives in his side's defeat after a much-improved showing in the second half.

"The two errors and the red card were key in our loss. Nevertheless, we bounced back well and we could have won the Supercopa even when we were reduced to 10 men," Xavi told reporters. "We kept on playing football and we were true to our style of play, despite the fact that we were down a man. In the second half we created enough chances to win the trophy."

The influential midfielder then urged his teammates to forget about the Supercup loss and focus on La Liga again.

"We lost a title, but there are more important ones still to play for. Now we have to change our mentality and think about the Liga match this Sunday."

Barcelona hosts Valencia on Sunday evening.

Tottenham defender Kaboul out for four months after knee surgery

    197310hp2.jpg

Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul has confirmed that he will be sidelined for around four months after undergoing knee surgery.

Kaboul was initially ruled out of Euro 2012 after aggravating an existing knee injury while playing for Spurs in the final game of last season, before playing a full 90 minutes against Newcastle United on the opening day of the new campaign only for the decision to go under the knife on Thursday to be made.

After Tweeting that the operation was a success, the former Portsmouth star revealed that he was hoping to be back in action in four months' time.

The France international Tweeted: "Morning all, surgery done with success..Now looking forward for my rehab.I thank you all for your great support as usual!#comingbackstronger.

"Sorry I forgot to mention how long...Should be 4 months."

Kaboul now looks certain to miss high-profile Premier League matches against the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Fellow center back Michael Dawson looked on course for a move away from White Hart Lane after the club accepted an offer rising to a possible 10 million pounds from QPR for the 29-year-old.

However, this latest development could see Andre Villas-Boas pull the plug.

Terry and Gerrard return to England squad for World Cup qualifying campaign

    191309hp2.jpg

England manager Roy Hodgson has recalled John Terry and Steven Gerrard to the Three Lions squad for the World Cup qualifying matches against Moldova and Ukraine.

Terry is currently facing a Football Association investigation regarding allegations that he racially abused QPR defender Anton Ferdinand last season, and had been left out of the squad for the friendly against Italy.

The Chelsea captain, along with Liverpool skipper Gerrard, returns to the fray, but Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand miss out due to injury.

Goalkeepers Jack Butland and John Ruddy, who both made their senior debuts against Italy, are included in the squad once again behind regular No.1 Joe Hart.

In defense, youngsters Ryan Bertrand and Kyle Walker join established internationals Terry, Ashley Cole and Joleon Lescott, while in midfield Tom Cleverley retains his place in the 24-man group after impressing against Italy.

Michael Carrick retired from international football, Hodgson claimed, ruling him out of involvement at Euro 2012, but has returned to the national team since the conclusion of the tournament and will travel with the Three Lions again here.

In attack, Andy Carroll has been selected despite his limited game-time for Liverpool alongside Jermain Defoe, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge.

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Sunderland), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Forwards: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).

AC Milan yet to agree fee with Manchester City for Nigel de Jong

    204504hp2.jpg

AC Milan continues to target Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong but has so far failed to agree a fee with the Premier League club.

The Premier League champion value the Dutch midfielder, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, at around 8.2 million euros, but the Rossoneri are currently willing to pay only 3.7-5m euros for his signature.

Milan has secured deals to bring strikers Bojan Krkic and M'Baye Niang to San Siro and regard De Jong as an ideal replacement for his compatriot Mark van Bommel, who joined PSV this summer.

Last week, Massimiliano Allegri's team overtook rival Inter in the race to sign the 27-year-old, with the Nerazzurri having sealed the transfer of Uruguayan midfielder Walter Gargano from Napoli.

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani is considering a variety of bonuses and incentives that could balance a potential offer to De Jong, who is expected to command a salary in excess of 3.8m euros per season if he does complete a move to Italy.

A move for Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra, in addition to interest in Kaka, has been abandoned, with the former Arsenal and Chelsea player set to join Fenerbahce for 5.5m euros per season for three years.

Djamel Mesbah, Edoardo Pazzagli and Adria Carmona, meanwhile, could leave the Italian club as it looks to trim its squad numbers.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Barcelona win is a confidence boost

    206512hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has voiced his delight with Real Madrid's 2-1 home win over Barcelona in the second leg of the Spanish Supercopa encounter, and stressed that winning a first title of the season at the expense of Madrid's arch-rival is a real confidence boost.

Los Blancos were beaten 3-2 in the first leg, but early goals from Gonzalo Higuain and the Portuguese winger put the Santiago Bernabeu side 4-3 up on aggregate.

Lionel Messi then pegged one back from a free kick, but it was not enough for Barca as Madrid came out victorious on the away-goals rule.

"We started well and we scored two quick goals that gave us confidence," Ronaldo was quoted as saying on the club's official website. "We played well and created many chances. In the second half we slowed the tempo because we were tired, but we deserved to win.

"We won an important trophy. It gives us confidence and we have to celebrate it. We cannot slip up in La Liga because we know that Barcelona are very strong."

Fullback Alvaro Arbeloa was equally pleased with Madrid's display and urged his teammates to show a similar attitude in La Liga.

"I’m very happy, we played an amazing match. We should have won by more because we created many chances; the important thing was to win the match and give our fans something to cheer about, which they deserved.

"This is the attitude everyone wants and we are the first to know it, not just against Barcelona, but every week in the Liga."

Madrid locks horns with Granada on Sunday.

Pardew ends Newcastle's pursuit of Carroll

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew appears to have ended speculation linking Liverpool striker Andy Carroll with a return to Tyneside during the current transfer window.

The striker left the Magpies in a 35 million pound deal in January but has been linked with a return to the club this summer and was the subject of a rejected loan bid. West Ham have also expressed interest in Carroll.

Pardew is not expecting Newcastle to push through a move for the target man.

"Not as far as I'm aware, no," he told reporters when asked if a deal could be done.

Pardew went on to reveal that Newcastle is waiting patiently for possible opportunities to present themselves over the course of the final two days of the transfer window.

The 51-year-old did concede, however, that the players that they were interested in appeared settled at their current clubs.

"We are just watching the market and seeing if anything pops its head up that's appealing to us," he explained. "Agents keep ringing me and giving me all sorts of names - they must think we don't scout - but we are aware of the ones we are watching and if they decide to move on, then we might trigger ourselves.

"But at the moment, the targets we have are all very much secure at their clubs."

Jol: Fulham in discussions with more than one club for Dempsey

    183268hp2.jpg

Fulham manager Martin Jol has once again commented on the ongoing transfer saga surrounding Fulham and USA star Clint Dempsey.

Jol told the club's official site that while there still weren't concrete offers on the table, Fulham had more than one club interested in bringing its star player away from Craven Cottage.

“There is still nothing on the table but discussions are ongoing with more than one club,” said Jol. “I expect a few things to happen soon. We are talking to several clubs but it is up to him and his desire to go to a Champions League club.

“Maybe that won’t happen but certainly I expect a few clubs to be in the mix for him. Sunderland is one of them but I think that will be difficult. There are different clubs with different scenarios and different ideas but we know exactly what we want and if other clubs come up with the right deal then we’ll do it.”

Dempsey has been linked with a move to Liverpool for most of the summer, but Jol's words lend weight to the idea that there may be a few clubs in England eyeing up a late move for the midfielder.

Real Madrid 2-1 Barcelona (Agg: 4-4): Madrid wins on away goals

    206441hp2.jpg

Real Madrid has claimed the 2012 Supercopa after a gripping 2-1 second-leg victory over Barcelona in their Santiago Bernabeu clash on Wednesday.

Los Blancos triumphed on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate, but it should have been a much wider margin after a shambolic defensive start from Tito Vilanova's men.

A missed clearance from Javier Mascherano saw Gonzalo Higuain gifted the opener, and an outrageous move from Cristiano Ronaldo on Gerard Pique put him in position to make it 2-0 after 19 minutes.

Adriano's red card just before half an hour seemed to signal the the end of Barca's hopes, but Lionel Messi dragged the club back to its feet with a fantastic free kick on the stroke of halftime.

The second half was far more tense as a much-improved Barca had chances to score again, but there was no way back for the visitors as Madrid hung on to claim the first trophy in Spain this season.

Pepe returned from a concussion to start alongside Sergio Ramos in defense, but there was no place for new signing Luka Modric, who began the game on the bench.

An injury to Dani Alves during the warmup forced Tito Vilanova to draft Jordi Alba in at left back, with Adriano shifting to the opposite flank. Carles Puyol was another notable absentee after fracturing a cheekbone in the 2-1 win over Osasuna on the weekend.

The Barcelona captain may have well had a thing or two to say after a dreadful defensive opening that saw Madrid storm into a two goal lead after 20 minutes.

Mascherano had already allowed Higuain to slip past him for an early one-on-one that was saved by Victor Valdes, and the Argentine gifted his compatriot an even greater chance in the 11th minute, when his missed attempt at a clearance allowed the striker to steal in and slot home the opener.

It went from bad to worse for Barca eight minutes later, as Madrid struck again after pouncing on another lapse at the back. Pique was left bamboozled by a heel flick from Ronaldo, who advanced on goal and had time to steady himself before blasting in via the leg of Valdes.Valdes was called into action once more to deny Higuain, who was again able to get behind the defense, while Madrid saw a third goal questionably disallowed for an infraction after Pepe nodded in a free kick.

The visiting side was all at sea, and the chances seemed to be virtually extinguished just before the half hour mark when Adriano was shown a straight red card for pulling down Ronaldo on a clear break towards goal for the Portuguese.

Vilanova was forced to throw on Martin Montoya for Sanchez in a bid to shore up his defense as Madrid continued to dominate. Sami Khedira’s volley was thwarted from point blank range by Valdes, before a last ditch challenge from Mascherano halted Higuain as he bore down on goal.

However, there were a few signs of life from Barca as the first half drew to a close. Montaya came within inches of connecting with Andres Iniesta’s low cross, and then, in stoppage time, a moment of magic from Messi gave the visitors a fighting chance.

The Argentine took charge of a free kick after Xavi was felled 30 yards from goal, and bent a breathtaking effort around the wall, past the outstretched arm of Iker Casillas and into the back of the net.

Still, Madrid nearly responded in the dying embers of the first half. Ronaldo’s 35-yard drive bounced inches wide, and Higuain also narrowly missed, after cutting onto his left foot deep inside the area.Barca headed into the break knowing that it still had a lot of work to do, and looked to wrest control from the home side as the second half unfolded.

Madrid seemed content to sit back and protect the advantage, which allowed the Blaugrana the chance to dictate proceedings with their famed tiki-taka football.

Their improved endeavor was almost rewarded on the hour mark, after a searching ball from the back by Mascherano was taken in stride brilliantly by Pedro, who saw his shot met by an equally fantastic save from Casillas. The Spanish forward had another opening moments later after sneaking in on the right, but Casillas was again alert to stop him from poking home at the near post.

Madrid was far from ruthless, but still harbored a significant threat on the break. Khedira nearly scored a third after beating multiple defenders en-route to goal, but Valdes was able to block strongly.

Alba was thwarted at the last by a great challenge from Ramos, before Higuain was allowed through on goal for the umpteenth time, but could not finish the chance as his effort bounced off the base of the post.

Late openings appeared for both sides, but no more goals were forthcoming as Madrid held on to claim the Supercopa, and set the pace for what is sure to be a enthralling season in Spain.

Valencia confirms Pablo Hernandez move to Swansea

    203585hp2.jpg

Swansea City has agreed a fee with Valencia for the transfer of Pablo Hernandez.

The 27-year-old winger will now travel to Wales in order to undergo a medical and agree personal terms.

Hernandez, who has been capped four times by Spain, made 30 La Liga appearances for Valencia last season, scoring three goals and providing the same amount of assists.

The midfielder becomes Michael Laudrup's third arrival from La Liga this summer after the signing of Michu from Rayo Vallecano and the loan arrival of Jonathan de Guzman from Villarreal.

"Valencia CF have reached an agreement with the Swansea City for the transfer of Pablo Hernandez, who has traveled to Wales to pass a medical. The club wishes to thank Pablo for his professionalism and involvement throughout his career on our team and we wish him all the luck in his new career," a statement on Valencia's official website read.

Hernandez has been targeted as a replacement for Scott Sinclair, who is likely to secure a move to Manchester City before the close of the transfer window.

Sunderland winger Johnson has no regrets over his stay at Manchester City

    172247hp2.jpg

Adam Johnson has stated he has no regrets over moving to Manchester City over his new club Sunderland two years ago.

The England winger had a choice of the two clubs after Middlesbrough accepted bids from both teams, and the 25-year-old opted to join high-flying City.

Despite his move not working out at the Etihad Stadium, he still feels he made the right choice at the time.

"I had the choice of going to Sunderland or City, and I probably made the right decision with the medals and the experience I have had," he told reporters. "Looking back, I would probably do it again - I suppose any young lad would in my situation then."But it's worked out now that I am here."

Johnson feels his first-team opportunities were restricted at City by boss Roberto Mancini, but admits he enjoyed the success of winning trophies, in particular the Premier League triumph last season.

"You can always look back and think," he said. "It was a slightly disappointing end, but I won the Premier League, FA Cup and the Community Shield and played in the Champions League, so it wasn't all bad.

"But it was a little bit disappointing I didn't play as much as I was capable of. I owed it to myself to go and play football again and enjoy playing."
