Villas-Boas: Dawson will come good at Tottenham

    204683hp2.jpg

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has backed Michael Dawson to put forward a compelling case for his inclusion in Spurs' first team.

The former Leeds defender was handed the club captaincy this summer following Ledley King's retirement but was the subject of interest from QPR toward the end of the transfer window. However, that move failed to materialize and Villas-Boas has now expressed his belief that the 28-year-old can still fight for a starting berth, especially with Younes Kaboul out with a long-term injury.

"We have chatted. There is extreme competition for that central defense position," the Portuguese boss told reporters. "Younes' operation will take him out for three to four months and it is up to Michael to compete.

"I'm sure he will come good. He is an extremely good professional and a club captain. He is looking forward to getting back into the team."

Dawson joined the north London club from Nottingham Forest in 2005 and has made 242 appearances for the side in all competitions.

Iniesta: UEFA prize belongs to everyone in Barcelona

    207387hp2.jpg

Barcelona's newly-crowned UEFA Best Player in Europe Andres Iniesta praised team mates and supporters after being honored in front of the Camp Nou before Sunday's victory over Valencia.

The midfielder started from the bench as Barca held on for a narrow 1-0 victory against Los Che, Adriano scoring the only goal of the game in the first half with a long-range effort. The win gives the club a maximum haul of nine points from their first three games, leaving it two points clear at the top of the table.

Accompanied by his wife and daughter, Iniesta made the symbolic gesture of handing his award to the Camp Nou crowd before kick off. Speaking after the win, the humble star explained what the prize meant to him and everyone at the club.

"It is another moment to remember. The fans have seen me grow here for a long time and I have a very special affection for them," he told reporters at the final whistle. "But it is now in the past. We have to continue in this fashion. The most important thing is to be there for this type of prize. It is a prize for all the players who have always been there."

Turning to Sunday's triumph, Iniesta lamented the chances missed by his team and urged them to be more ruthless in front of goal.

"The key was to take the game. We could have won more comfortably, above all in the first half. We are pleased because we still have the advantage. When you have the chances you have to take them because if not, you will suffer," he pointed out.

Iniesta beat Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate Lionel Messi to the title, the two tied in joint second behind the Fuentealbilla native.

'A psychological problem' - Stramaccioni unhappy with concentration in Roma defeat

    206316hp2.jpg

Andrea Stramaccioni' believes Inter's 3-1 defeat to Roma was the result of a 'psychological problem.'

Goals from Alessandro Florenzo, Pablo Osvaldo and Marquinhos did the damage for the Nerazzurri, with Zdenek Zeman's side leaving Milan with a deserved three points.

"I did not like the second half, we had a great first half and then the goal by Osvaldo, on a long ball from Totti, found [us] a little unprepared - [It was] a lightning [quick] restart," the manager told reporters after the game."

"Following the second goal, [we were] not good. This should make us reflect. Something has not gone right on a psychological level tonight."

Inter stalwart Javier Zanetti gave credit to Roma, but was disappointed with the lack of organization from himself and his teammates.

"We knew that our opponents would be good at taking advantage of the space we would leave from time to time. It’s just that tonight we did it too frequently," he explained to the club's official website.

Sir Alex Ferguson: De Gea lost Manchester United place for Fulham error

    150624hp2.jpg

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that goalkeeper David de Gea lost his first-team place for Sunday's clash with Southampton due to his error against Fulham in the previous match.

The Spanish shot stopper was replaced by Anders Lindegaard between the sticks as the Red Devils narrowly defeated Nigel Adkins' men 3-2 at St. Mary's Stadium.

And the Scot confirmed after the game that De Gea's spill against the Cottagers, which allowed them to get within a goal of earning a point at Old Trafford, cost the former Atletico Madrid man.

"I think young David made a mistake last week," he told Sky Sports after the win on the south coast. "He knows it. With the form he's been in, he's been making some fantastic saves, but one error like that could have cost us the game.

"It's just a learning process for him and he'll be back in a couple of weeks' time after the international break. Anders had his first game. I thought he was a little bit nervous at points but he's a very good keeper also. I don't think it's a big issue but it's something you have to deal with."

'I didn't celebrate because I'm unhappy' - Cristiano Ronaldo makes shock claim after Madrid win

    207344hp2.jpg

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo made the shock claim that he was unhappy with the club after he refused to celebrate his 149th and 150th Los Blancos goals in the win over Granada on Sunday.

The Portuguese was the catalyst behind his side's first win of the new La Liga season but his lack of elation on the back of two landmark strikes was the main talking point after the game, a storyline he expounded on after full time.

"I'm sad because of a professional issue and the club know why. That's why I didn't celebrate the goals, because I'm not happy. The people [at the club] know why." he told reporters after the match.

"It's nothing to do with Iniesta [winning European player award]. I won't talk about this any more and I will concentrate on Portugal for now. There are more important things [than this]."

"The people at the club know about this. I can't say any more."

Vilanova unconcerned by Cristiano Ronaldo's problems

    207397hp2.jpg

Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova refused to be drawn on the furore surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's post match comments on Sunday evening.

After Real Madrid'sconvincing 3-0 demolition of Granada, in which he scored his 150th goal in a Madrid shirt, the Portguese international told reporters of his unhappiness with a 'professional issue' that the club was aware of.

Vilanova was then asked for his opinion on the events unfolding at Santiago Bernabeu, but preferred to focus on the players under his guidance.

"I have enough to worry about seeing how my own players are, let alone worrying about Cristiano Ronaldo's situation," the 42-year-old told reporters in his post-match press conference.

The Blaugrana manager went on to discuss his side's fine start to the season, emphasizing the importance of gaining an early advantage in the race for the La Liga crown.

"It's important to finish a game to zero, but during the first half we could have scored one more goal to be keep [Valencia] quieter.

"It's very important to start with nine points. I'm sure the [playing] level will increase during the year. I do not think any team is at optimum level yet."
