    Ronaldo: Let me go

    56_ronaldo_1577672a.jpg

CRISTIANO RONALDO put Manchester giants City and United on red alert after admitting he wants to quit Real Madrid.

A source said: “Yes, Cristiano told president Florentino Perez he wants to leave the club.”

It follows the Portugal superstar’s bombshell on Sunday after scoring twice against Granada. Ronaldo, 27, did not celebrate either of his goals and said afterwards: “I am sad and the people at the club know about it. “It’s about professional issues. I can’t say any more.”

Megabucks City and his old club United will keep a close eye on developments – along with Chelsea.

Manchester City plan £95m move for Cristiano Ronaldo

Madrid, Sept 4: Premier League champions Manchester City are preparing a blockbuster world record £95m move for former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, according to reports in Daily Star.
Cristiano Ronaldo 'unhappy' with Real Madrid
Ronaldo had earlier revealed that he was unhappy at Real Madrid and cited professional issues for not celebrating his 150th goal at the Bernabeu.
"I am sad and the club knows it, that's why I didn't celebrate the goals. The people in the club know why," Ronaldo said.
City are now pondering a move to bring the Portuguese back to Manchester with a sensational four-year contract next summer. The 27-year-old, who is paid around £250k weekly, has a buy-out clause of £100 million.
Roberto Mancini would have to clear his squad in order to raise funds for Ronaldo who still has three years left on his contract with the La Liga champions.
The former Red Devil, who was brought for a record £80m, led Real to the La Liga title scoring 46 goals in 38 league appearances and City cannot refuse to sign a player of his calibre who has scored 150 goals in 149 appearances for the Los Blancos.
Moreover, Ronaldo will have to accept a huge cut on his wages when Spain imposes higher income taxes from 7 per cent to 52 per cent.

    Owen set for Stoke move

    michaelowen20110913_576x324.jpg

Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen is set to join Stoke City on a one-year deal.

Owen, 32, is a free agent after being released by United at the end of last season, with the former England international linked with a host of clubs, but should now move to the Britannia Stadium.Tony Pulis has been given the all-clear to sign Owen by Stoke chairman Peter Coates.

A Stoke insider told ESPN on Tuesday: "The possibility of taking Michael Owen is now being made. We are talking about a pay-as-you-play arrangement, there will be no other offer put on the table.

"If the terms are right, it is a possibility, and the manager wants to take him but the club have a lot of strikers and would have liked to have moved at least one on before the transfer deadline."

Stoke are believed to be ready to offer Owen a basic one-year deal, with a host of incentives, including the possibility of a second year if he proves his fitness after playing just four games last season for Manchester United.

Pulis is convinced Owen, who scored 40 goals in 89 England appearances still has the pedigree to make an impact at the Britannia Stadium.Owen plans to announce a decision this week, and his advisors have told ESPN that he plans to stay in the North West, another indicator he will sign for the Potters.

The former England striker has made it clear, via his Twitter account, that he still feels he can perform at Premier League level and maintains his poor appearances record at Old Trafford was largely due to being overlooked by Sir Alex Ferguson, rather than a catalogue of injuries.Speculation has grown since Liverpool failed to sign a striker before the close of the transfer window, while Sunderland, Everton and Australian club Melbourne Heart have also linked to Owen.

The 32-year-old has been in discussions with unnamed clubs and fuelled speculation a decision might be imminent by tweeting a picture of his boots and shin pads with the message: "The tools of my trade are stacked and ready to go!"Marseille's Joey Barton responded with, "Where u off mate?", to which Owen eventually replied: "I will tell you on Wednesday!"

One place Owen won't be ending up is Anfield after the Reds informed ESPN on Tuesday that they are no longer pursuing a move to bring their former striker back to Anfield.

    PSG dismiss Ronaldo speculation

    cristianoronaldoscores20120902_576x324.jpg

Paris St Germain sporting director Leonardo has dismissed speculation that Cristiano Ronaldo, who has said he is unhappy at Real Madrid, could be on his way to the big-spending French club.

Ronaldo, 27, refused to celebrate either of his two goals in the Spanish champions' victory over Granada at the weekend and said after the game: "I am sad, and the people at the club know about it. It's about professional issues. I can't say any more."

Leonardo, though, was quick to refute speculation that PSG could move for the seemingly unsettled Ronaldo, saying that, in summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Paris club already had "the best striker in the world".Speaking to radio station RMC, he said: ''We're very happy with our transfer market dealings. Many things are said about PSG - too many, maybe. "Ronaldo is a Real Madrid player. We don't talk about others teams' players - that's respect.

"Ibrahimovic is the best striker in the world. So why hire Ronaldo? Zlatan is unique. When we talk about the best players, there is Ronaldo and Messi - but they are not strikers. The best striker, that's Zlatan."Meanwhile, widespread reports in the Spanish sports media suggest a combination of more money and "more love" from Real are required to lift Ronaldo's spirits.

As he arrived to join Portugal's squad in Obidos, he told reporters: "I am not going to say anything" - but later that night a message was filtered through to the media that suggested "everything has a solution".Portugal keeper Beto backed his national captain, saying: "He is a model professional. Nobody could doubt his performances." The Portuguese FA said Ronaldo would be fit for the Brazil 2014 qualifiers in Luxembourg on Friday and against Azerbaijan in Braga four days later despite suffering a slight thigh strain against Granada.
Tuesday's Spanish sports papers were filled with speculation about what had sparked Ronaldo's 'sadness', with Marca suggesting he wanted more backing and protection from the club.

The paper says Ronaldo feels he does not have the unanimous recognition of his team-mates, believes he deserves a significant contract improvement and is very concerned about a "strictly personal" problem. Of these issues, AS believes finance is the most important. The paper says Ronaldo's €10 million-a-year deal was the biggest in world football when he signed for Madrid in 2009, but has since been overtaken - Samuel Eto'o, Zlatan Ibrahmovic, Wayne

Rooney, Didier Drogba and Lionel Messi all earn more now. Marca's lead article argues that "Cristiano's sadness cannot be cured with money", with its report claiming Ronaldo does not feel he gets the respect his goalscoring record of 151 strikes in 149 games deserves from either the boardroom or the dressing room.

Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, has denied reports that he had been surprised by his client's comments at the weekend, saying: "Cristiano's statement was based on reasons I was aware of, and it is Cristiano's right to share them [his concerns] or not, as he himself sees fit. "What he said did not surprise me or, even less, cause me any discomfort. Anyone who knows my relationship with Cristiano knows that he will always have my total solidarity."

    Hugo upset with Villas-Boas

    lloris_1577873a.jpg

TOTTENHAM new boy Hugo Lloris is upset with manager Andre Villas-Boas — just four days after signing for him.

The French international goalkeeper joined from Lyon on transfer deadline day in an £8million deal. His arrival prompted a star performance by current first-choice stopper Brad Friedel, 41, in the 1-1 draw with Norwich at White Hart Lane.

And boss Villas-Boas responded by saying the pair would now battle it out for the No1 shirt. That does not appear to have gone down too well Lloris, who linked up with the national team yesterday. Speaking at their base in Clairefontaine, France coach Didier Deschamps said: “Hugo has not appreciated the statements of his coach.

“I am not going to create a problem that I do not need today. “But if it were to happen then it would need some consideration. “I do not want Hugo to find himself in this situation.”

Defoe: My extra experience means I must perform for England

    203214hp2.jpg

Jermain Defoe has admitted to feeling a heightened level of responsibility ahead of England's clash with Moldova in its opening World Cup 2014 qualification match thanks to the youthful nature of the striking options around him.

The 29-year-old has been selected alongside Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck in his squad – with Andy Carroll having to withdraw through injury - comfortably making the Tottenham man the most experienced forward available to Roy Hodgson.

And Defoe has admitted that he feels added pressure, but is keen to make the most of any opportunities afforded to him.

“Yes [there is more responsibility]. There is more responsibility on the whole squad. We don't know what the team is going to be yet,” he told reporters.

"It's a case of training well, working hard and if you're selected you have to take the opportunity with both hands.

"At this level every game is difficult. [Moldova] will make it hard and sit behind the ball and try to frustrate us.

"I have played in a number of games against the so-called smaller countries and it's difficult to get the first goal. It will be a difficult game, when we get the first goal we can go and get the second."

The Tottenham striker, who has recently penned a new three-year deal at White Hart Lane, was delighted to score in England’s 2-1 win friendly win over Italy last month, adding that it gave him more confidence when pulling on an England shirt.
“When you play for your country, you always want to score goals,” he continued.

“It was important to win the game against Italy. It was the first international game of the season so to get off to a winning start was important and it was nice to get the goal.

"Everything changes now you play for points but even in friendlies you need that winning mentality. Even though you're not playing for points you still want to win the game because at this level every game is going to be difficult."

Essien: I want to help Real Madrid win titles

    207077hp2.jpg

New Real Madrid signing Michael Essien has claimed that he wants to help the club defend its league title and win the Champions League.

The former Chelsea man was quick to show his ambition for Los Blancos, and was on-hand to praise his teammates at Santiago Bernabeu.

"During my time here I hope to help Real Madrid win titles," he told the club's official website.
"I want to work hard and do everything in my power to return the team to the top of the league."

"Our Champions League group is tough, but with these players we can go far," he added.
The Ghana international has suffered with injuries over the past few season, but has moved to the Spanish capital on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

Moggi: Inter made a mistake selling Pazzini

    135589hp2.jpg

Former Juventus managing director Luciano Moggi has claimed that Inter made a mistake selling Giampaolo Pazzini, and that the Serie A champions should have signed the in-form striker instead of AC Milan.

Moggi, who has a lifetime ban in football due to his role on the 2006 Calciopoli scandal, insisted that the Nerazzurri should have kept hold of the former Sampdoria man, and that he would have been well suited to the Bianconeri.

“It is a well-trodden path at [Massimo] Moratti's Inter that they can't find a suitable partner for [Diego] Milito,” he told newspaper Libero. “But Inter's cast-off is now shining for Milan.“He was recommended to Juve, but instead they tried to get that unobtainable 'top player'. Pazzini would be a brilliant partner for [Mirko] Vucinic, but instead they have opted for [Sebastian] Giovinco."

And reflecting on the Giovinco transfer, the former Juve chief was also unhappy with the cost of the deal.

“[His former club] Parma wanted a high price for a player who was already black and white in their heart, and I think the situation could have been handled a lot better,” he said.

Podolski delighted after first Arsenal goal

    207222hp2.jpg

Lukas Podolski believes he has what it takes to become Arsenal’s new talisman after notching his first for the club in a 2-0 win over Liverpool.

The Gunners opened the season with back-to-back goalless draws against Sunderland and Stoke City, prompting suggestions they were struggling to cope following Robin van Perise departure, but grabbed their first win of the campaign at Anfield.

Podolski impressed in the game, scoring the opening goal, and is confident that he is capable of producing match-winning display on a more regular basis for his new side.

"When I'm on the pitch, I can win matches,” the 27-year-old told the club’s official website. "I'm very happy to score my first goal at Liverpool with their amazing fans and stadium.

"I'm also very happy that we won and got the three points. You must always work hard in matches. You must fight, you must run and you must score goals."

The Germany international is happy with the club's first three performances and is ready to give his all as he settles into life in England.

"We played very well in the first two matches,” he added. “But when you don't have the three points, the press write that you play no good. But I think we played very well - we just didn't score a goal. This is the Premier League and you must fight and run. This is my style of football. I like the style of Arsenal."

Xabi Alonso and Higuain react to Ronaldo affair

Xabi Alonso and Gonzalo Higuain have reacted to Cristiano Ronaldo's comments that he is unhappy at Real Madrid, by claiming that they know nothing of his dissatisfaction.

Los Blancos duo were coy when asked about the news that their teammate could be moving away from Santiago Bernabeu in the near future, and in turn confirmed that they were content in the Spanish capital.“I speak for myself when I say I am happy here,” Alonso told AS. “Each person feels as each person wants.

“I think many of us are in a fortunate position where we are part of a group that has made history, but we don’t want to rest on our laurels. We just want to have the chance to win more trophies.”

Argentina international Higuain also commented on the situation surrounding his forward partner, saying: “I cannot speak about it because I know nothing. Cristiano has not said anything in the changing room, and what I've learned is only from the press.”

Vertonghen proud to win Eredivisie Golden Boot award

    206613hp2.jpg

Tottenham new boy Jan Vertonghen has expressed his delight at winning the Eredivisie's 'Golden Boot' award.

The trophy is presented to the best player in the Dutch league for the previous season and is an incentive set up by De Telegraaf, the country's biggest newspaper, and television station Eredivisie Live.

Vertonghen was awarded the trophy at a special gala event following impressive displays for former club Ajax, which led to his move to White Hart Lane.

"I often hear that you must receive a prize like this from someone out of the sports world," he said. "But I never had an idol so I will receive it from my mother. She's always been there for me, in my career and in a personal way. "

He added, "My mother gives me this award on behalf of my family; my brother and my father. I want to thank my family, my girlfriend, Frank de Boer, the people at Ajax and the parents of my girlfriend."

Ajax coach De Boer took to Twitter to congratulate Vertonghen, stating on his official account: "That's why football is so beautiful. Jan Vertonghen is a top guy. Good luck in London."

Vertonghen was the clear winner and was followed by Jordy Clasie of Feyenoord who took the Silver Boot and Christian Eriksen, who was awarded the Bronze Boot.

AZ Alkmaar's Adam Maher was presented with the Johan Cruyff award for Talent of the Year.
