Iniesta among the world’s best players, says Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos

    206125hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/spain/124/real-madrid-cf/newsReal Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has hailed Barcelona's Iniesta as one of the best players in the world.

The pair played starring roles in Vicente Del Bosque's Euro 2012 winning side and the 26-year-old has been able to observe his national teammate at close quarters.

“The UEFA award was presented to him because over the years he has proved to be one of the best in the World," Ramos told Spanish television.

The Barcelona midfielder was named the best player in Europe by UEFA during the Champions League group stage draw, pipping teammate Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the award.Ramos also spoke of the rumors surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's unhappiness at the club, and offered his words of support.

"I do not think that the problem with Cristiano Ronaldo is serious, we hope not," he added. "In good and in bad times, however, he knows he can count on me."

Costa Rica manager Pinto: 'The earthquake didn't shake me, Mexico won't either'

    145314hp2.jpg

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica -- Jorge Luis Pinto and his Costa Rica players will attempt to break a near two-decade winless streak against Mexico at home this Friday.

The three points would go a long way for Los Ticos, who have already drawn at the Estadio Nacional when El Salvador was able to hold them to a draw. Winning at home against Mexico would put further pressure on the Salvadorians, who currently sit third in the group after losing to El Tri at the Estadio Cuscatlan.

Despite the prolonged drought, Pinto was quick to point out that Costa Rica is not feeling overshadowed ahead of Friday's game.

"I didn't shake with the earthquake, Mexico won't make me shake either," Pinto responded angrily to a question asking whether the prospect of facing El Tri made his team nervous. "I want us to be seen respectfully and that was a very disrespectful question," he continued.

Pinto is currently undergoing his second stint as Costa Rica manager, as he first took the job on in 2004. Later, he was hired to be Colombia's national team manager in 2007 before vacating the post a year later.

Russia 2-0 Northern Ireland: Fayzulin and Shirokov secure first victory for Capello

    181231hp2.jpg

Russia began their http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/3841/world-cup-2014World Cup 2014 qualifying campaign with a routine 2-0 victory over http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/northern-ireland/441/northern-irelandN.Ireland at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow on Friday.

Viktor Fayzulin grabbed the only goal of the game in the first half after Alan Dzagoev had sprung Aleksandr Kerzhakov into space, the latter proceeding to pick out the goalscorer with a cut-back to the center of the penalty area.

Fabio Capello's team dominated the Italian manager's first competitive game in charge but the Northern Ireland defense, led by Jonny Evans, held firm to restrict their chances.

They could offer nothing in an attacking sense, however, as an isolated Kyle Lafferty cut a frustrated figure in attack, and the result was made safe when Roman Shirokov scored from the penalty spot after Craig Cathcart's foul on Aleksandr Kokorin.

The Russian team had a familiar feel, with Dzagoev and Aleksandr Kerzhakov leading from the front, but with Andrey Arshavin out of favor and Yuri Zhirkov injured, Dmitri Kombarov and Vladimir Bystrov came into the starting XI.

Cathcart continued in an unfamiliar role at left-back for Northern Ireland. Lafferty was the lone striker, with Jamie Ward, Corry Evans and Chris Brunt closest in support from midfield.

There was a swift tempo to Russia's passing from the off, with Northern Ireland pressed heavily when in possession, but the center back partnership of Gareth McAuley and Jonny Evans was able to disrupt the hosts' play in the final third. Their first clear sight of goal came when Bystrov scrapped the ball across to Kerzhakov, who pulled a poor shot wide from 10 yards.

It seemed the visitors were growing more comfortable and Russia's early enthusiasm fading when Capello's team found their first-half breakthrough. A loose ball that had ricocheted in front of the Northern Ireland defense was picked up by Dzagoev, and after the playmaker slipped in Kerzhakov he cut the ball back for Fayzulin to finish into the top corner.

Matters could have become worse when Shirokov found himself in space in the penalty area after a superb flick from Bystrov, but Roy Carroll made an excellent save to deny the midfielder and Kerzhakov headed the rebound wildly over the crossbar.

Northern Ireland were restricted to one or two Corry Evans forays from midfield and a long-range effort by Lafferty that was easily saved by Igor Akinfeev, with the Sion striker severely lacking help in the opposition half.

Capello's comfort was outlined by the way he withdrew Dzagoev not long into the second half in order to give 21-year-old striker Kokorin a run-out on the left side of attack.

Kerzhakov very nearly put the game to bed with a free-kick from the edge of the box which hit the post after Chris Baird had been harshly adjudged to have fouled Bystrov, but when Cathcart barged over Kokorin in the box there was less surprise when the referee pointed to the spot.

Shirokov stepped up and passed the ball to Carroll's left to end the game as a contest and secure Capello's first victory as national team coach.

Northern Ireland finally showed some attacking spark in the latter stages, however, with McAuley twice going close. The West Brom defender's header from a corner was cleared off the line before he saw a goal-bound volley similarly stopped.

We are out for revenge, says Barcelona star Lionel Messi

    207853hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/argentina/8012/lionel-messiMessi says that http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/spain/125/fc-barcelonaBarcelona is relishing the challenge of competing on all fronts this season, while bemoaning its failure to land either La Liga or the Champions League last term.

Barca appeared on course to retain both trophies as the previous campaign drew to a close, before being knocked out of Europe's premier club competition by Chelsea in the semifinals and losing their domestic crown to Real Madrid.

"Obviously I would have liked to win the Champions League and as always win everything," said Messi. "Not beating Chelsea and reaching the final was painful for us, and for me especially having missed a penalty. But this year we will go for it all again, we are prepared."The Argentine went on to say that although new coach Tito Vilanova has a different personality than Guardiola, his approach to football is the same.

"They are different personalities, but the philosophy is identical. The same people are working with Tito. Everyone has their own way of seeing things, to transmit. And yes they are different," he concluded.

Rooney: Handing in transfer request at Manchester United was the biggest mistake of my career

    172158hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/england/97/man-utdManchester United striker http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/england/1681/wayne-rooneyWayne Rooney has stated that the biggest regret of his career to date was when he asked to leave the club in 2010 due to what he perceived was a lack of ambition.

Rooney has admitted that he felt frustrated at the direction that the club was taking around that time, which coupled with his own injury problems and lack of form only served to cloud his judgement over his future, something he has since seen in a different light.

"In September 2010 my ankle puts me on the sidelines. I get frustrated with myself, my game, my injury, and everything around me. I'm stuck in a cycle of bad form but I can't get out of it. And that's when I make the biggest mistake of my football career," Rooney recalls in his new autobiography currently being serialized in the Daily Mirror.

"In October, I release a statement which publicly questions my happiness at Old Trafford. Am I better off elsewhere?

"Everyone makes a fuss. There are discussions inside United to sort out the issue, people outside United chuck their opinions around, but the thing is, nobody really knows what's going on in my life."None of them understand where I am in my career. They don't know where my head's at. The only person who really knows what's going on in there is me, but even I'm not sure what I want."

After discussions with manager Sir Alex Ferguson, though, Rooney performed a dramatic U-turn and he went on to explain how the 70-year-old boss convinced him to extend his stay at Old Trafford.

"Then the manager has his say. 'Sometimes you look in a field and you see a cow and you think it's a better cow than the one you have in your own field. And it never really works that way'," he explained.

"He's saying the grass isn't always greener, and he's right. I like what's in my field. I'm wrong. United want the same as me: trophies, success, to be the best."

Barton's 12-game ban to be upheld while at Marseille

    207297hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/england/1928/joey-bartonBarton is set to miss nine Olympique de Marseille domestic fixtures as the Disciplinary Committee of the Professional League Football France has applied his ban picked up at the end of the 2011-12 Premier League season to his new surroundings.

The English Football Federation forwarded the suspension to its French equivalent and they used Article 12 of the Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players from FIFA, which means that the ban is applicable in a differing country.

Having already served three games of the ban while waiting for the loan move to go through, the new ruling will see Barton miss nine games in either Ligue 1 or the Coupe de la Ligue; however, he could still play in the Europa League.

The ban was initially imposed by the FA after the midfielder was found guilty of two counts of violent conduct for the incident surrounding his sending off against Manchester City during the final game of last season.

The 30-year-old could now make his debut for his new club on September 20, when the French outfit faces Fenerbache in its Europa League opener.

Ancelotti: UEFA not critical of Paris Saint-Germain transfer policy

    202253hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/france/74/paris-saint-germainPSG boss Carlo Ancelotti has denied that UEFA is against the French club's extravagant transfer policy.

It comes only a week after the president of European football's governing body, Michel Platini, sent out a warning to all clubs that there will be problems for anyone who fails to comply with financial fair play rules.

“I think that UEFA wants to have control [on expenses] of all clubs in Europe,” said the http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/france/74/paris-saint-germainPSG coach, after spending vast sums of money on a host of marquee names over the summer.

According to Ancelotti, the issue of financial fair play was not discussed by Platini at a meeting of major European club coaches in Nyon, which he attended.
“There was a technical meeting and I was comfortable,” he added.

:angry:Zenit targeted both Nani and Joao Moutinho before the close of the transfer window

    206178hp2.jpg

"The transfer of Nani failed mostly due to this reason, as he asked for an enormous salary and we would not pay him."Manchester United winger http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/portugal/10351/naniNani and long-standing Tottanham transfer target Joao Moutinho were both in talks with Zenit St Petersburg on deadline day, the club's director-general has revealed.

The reigning Russian champion still managed to make a big splash in the market before the window closed by completing an 100 million euro combined double signing of Porto forward Hulk and Benfica midfielder Axel Witsel.

However, it has since emerged that they also tried to make another double swoop altogether, with the Portuguese pair of Nani and Joao Moutinho pursued if the aforementioned move failed to materialize.

"We really have been negotiating Nani and Moutinho, but Hulk and Witzel were top priorities," explained Zenit chief Maxim Mitrofanov.

"It must be understood that any transfer campaign is based on the list of players, ranked by priority."

Mitrofanov also stated that a move was possible for the Manchester United man until they spoke to the player and realised that his salary expectations were beyond even their resources.

"If Hulk had demanded 8m-10m euros a year, these conditions would have been unacceptable for Zenit," Mitrofanov explained.

Nani has just two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, while Moutinho was reportedly just minutes away from completing a switch to Andre Villas-Boas' Tottenham Hotspur before the window closed.

Hazard needs to work on his defending, says Belgian FA vice president

    205507hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/england/96/chelseaChelsea winger http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/belgium/23040/eden-hazard/nationalEden Hazard needs to work on the defensive side of his game if he is to become as good as Lional Messi, according to Belgian FA vice president Philippe Collin.

Despite his tender age, Hazard has already represented Belgium 29 times at international level, but in order to reach his full potential, Collin argues that he must improve his all-round game.

"He has technique, explosiveness and positioning. At some point he will have to work on defending, and he has no choice with that," told Nieuwsblad. "But I have confidence that (Belgium coach) Marc Wilmots will occasionally give him a kick up his a**.

"The learning process is slow but good. If Messi should work for the team and defend, then I see no reason why Hazard should not do likewise."

There were some words of encouragement for the 21-year-old, though, with Manchester City captain and international team-mate Vincent Kompany impressed with how quickly Hazard has slotted into life in the top flight so far this term, adding that everyone needs to be patient with the youngster.

"People always talk about how difficult it is to adapt to the Premier League because it is physical and quick," Kompany told reporters. "It just takes some time usually so it's remarkable for him to show so much in such little space.

"Players like Eden only make our team stronger which is a good thing and the crazy thing is I still think he has much room to progress."Hazard was linked with a move to City all summer, but the talented playmaker opted to join Chelsea instead and Kompany believes that as long as he keeps up his form up at his new club, then that can only benefit the national side in the future.

He added: "I wish him the best. If he does well for his club and if it is the club which is best for him, then I know he will do well for the national team and that’s the most important thing for me."

Mourinho: Madrid fans will love Modric

    207329hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/portugal/2852/josé-mourinhoJose Mourinho is confident that Luka Modric will become an instant hit at Real Madrid following his summer arrival from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Croatia international signed a five-year deal with los Blancos in August to complete his move to the Liga champions, and his new head coach has little doubt that the gifted midfielder will become a fans' favorite at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I am convinced that he fits right in and that the fans will love him. We signed Modric because he can help us win more trophies," Mourinho stated to AS. "He's a very talented player and tactically strong. Additionally, he's a real team-player who's always looking to help his team-mates. He adds quality and a certain magic to the team. The people at the Bernabeu will appreciate him."

The Portuguese coach then went on to discuss the situation of Kaka, and insisted that the attacking midfielder still has a role to play at Madrid.

"Lots of players have encountered the same problems Kaka is experiencing now. He was plagued by physical problems when he arrived here and that's hindered him ever since.

"He has done many good things for Madrid, though, and I have already previously stated that it would not be a problem if he stayed here.

"He is working hard in training and he will get his chance again at some point. I'm convinced that he will do his utmost once called upon."

Kaka appeared to be on his way back to AC Milan in the summer transfer window, but the move eventually fell through due to the Serie A side's dire financial situation.

    Rooney - United for life

    waynerooneyback20120825_576x324.jpg

Wayne Rooney has spoken to Sky Sports to reveal he wants to see out his career at Manchester United and how his recent horror injury was only a millimetre away from an artery. Rooney was interviewed for Sky Sports News by Andy Burton ahead of the launch of his new book - My Decade in the Premier League - and gave a unique insight into his time with the Red Devils and Everton.

England's star striker burst onto the scene as a precociously talented 16-year-old in 2002, fully justifying all the hype over his potential with a stunning strike against Arsenal as he beat Gunners great David Seaman from outside the box to secure a 2-1 triumph for the Toffees.

He made the move to Old Trafford in August 2004, with the £20million invested in his services by Sir Alex Ferguson worth every single penny following a return of 181 goals from his 367 appearances - taking him to fourth place on the club's all-time record goal scorers' list and with Sir Bobby Charlton's legendary tally of 249 within his sights. The 26-year-old is under contract with United until June 2015 after signing a new and improved five-year deal back in 2010 following an unforgettable few days when he asked to leave the club - a moment he regards as his biggest mistake - before performing a dramatic U-turn.

    History

And, despite further speculation over his long-term future with United surfacing again in the opening weeks of the season, Rooney insists his commitment is unwavering and that he would happily see out his playing days at the Theatre of Dreams. He told Sky Sports: "When you first join a club you want to do well and you want to be successful. I've managed to do that with Manchester United. Being here for eight years, it's like a family club, you get to see all the history and how big the club has grown over the years."You feel part of it; you are part of that history. I love playing for Manchester United and as long as I am wanted to play for this football club I will be here for a long time. It is a great football club and, let's be honest, where else can you go from this football club; it is probably the biggest team in the world."

When asked if he would stay at Old Trafford for ever, he replied: "I hope so. I want to be successful here, I want to still be playing here in the next 10 years and be successful.

"You look at Giggsy and Paul Scholes, how successful they have been, they are an example to us all. That is the idea, that is the plan, and hopefully that will be the case."

    Lucky

Rooney is currently on the sidelines after suffering a frightening injury in the recent victory over Fulham when an attempted block by Hugo Rodallega led to the Colombian forward's studs opening a large gash in his thigh.Although the United star is yet to begin running again, he remains hopeful of being back in action before the end of the month, although it was terrifyingly close to the problem being significantly more serious.

He admitted: "I was quite lucky, to be honest. It somehow didn't hit my muscle. It was a millimetre away from my artery so it could have been a lot worse than it was. I have to thank God I am quite fortunate."The doctor said a lot of players would have fainted. They tried to cover it up in the dressing room when they were treating it to stop it becoming infected, but I told them I wanted to see it.

"It is feeling good at the minute and is healing quite well, but it is basically down to the doctor. You have to be careful and I don't want to come back too soon because I could get a bang on it and it would open up again."We said at the time there was a four-week scale and that would be the case, I imagine."

    Redknapp returns to Bournemouth

    harryredknapp20120415_576x324.jpg

Harry Redknapp is set to return to Bournemouth, the club where his managerial career began, in an advisory role.

The former Tottenham boss had said he was eager to make a return to football after being sacked from his job at White Hart Lane in June, with a return to the Premier League his priority. He will not have an official title at Bournemouth's Goldsands Stadium but will offer his advice and expertise to all aspects of the club.

Cherries chairman Eddie Mitchell said he was delighted with the coup and believes Redknapp has a wealth of experience to offer the club."I met Harry for a chat and he offered to come in on a voluntary basis," Mitchell told Bournemouth's official website."He still has a passion for the club and for football, and he's got too much to offer for us to let him slip through our fingers. It's been in my mind for quite some time to get him involved, and the timing seems to be perfect for us to tap into his knowledge."

The new arrival will pile pressure on inexperienced Bournemouth manager Paul Groves, but Redknapp told the club's website last month he is a big admirer of the man who worked under his guidance during his time as Portsmouth boss.

"Paul is a great football man with good knowledge of the game and I'm sure he will do a great job for Bournemouth this season," Redknapp said. "It's fantastic to see the club moving forward and the owner has done an amazing job here."

Redknapp had a spell as Bournemouth manager from 1983 to 1992, achieving their highest-ever league placing in 1989."I had a great time at Bournemouth and it will always be a special club to me. I was manager for ten years and had some great times and got the club into the second tier of English football for the first time," Redknapp added last month.

He will travel with the squad to Huish Park on Saturday for their League One fixture against second-placed Yeovil.

Jamaica 2-1 USA: Americans suffer shocking World Cup qualifying defeat on the road

    208692hp2.jpg

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- The United States beat Italy for the first time earlier this year. Then the Americans earned their first-ever win in Mexico last month.

Now they have another first. But it's not the kind they would want.

The U.S. team suffered its first loss to Jamaica in 19 games between the two teams after the Reggae Boyz bounced back from an early deficit to hand Jurgen Klinsmann's squad a 2-1 defeat at National Stadium in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.

Clint Dempsey set an American qualifying record by scoring 36 seconds into the match, but the visitors would go the rest of the 89-plus minutes without a goal. Jamaica scored twice on free kicks, from Rodolph Austin and Luton Shelton on either side of the half for the comeback win.

The U.S. entered the match with 10 wins and eight draws in the all-time series between the teams.

The U.S. (1-1-1) now sits behind Jamaica (2-0-1) in Group A after entering the match in first place due to better goal differential. The two teams will meet again on Tuesday in Columbus.

The Americans couldn't have asked for a better start while playing in a party-like atmosphere on the Caribbean island as their star player stepped up in the opening seconds.

Dempsey was supposed to be rusty after a summer of transfer drama at Fulham before moving to Tottenham in the closing hours of last Friday's transfer deadline, but he was in Klinsmann's starting lineup, which turned out to be the right decision.

Dempsey opened the scoring after Maurice Edu found Herculez Gomez down the right side. Gomez had a path to the goal but saw his first shot saved by keeper Dwayne Miller and the second blocked by a defender before Dempsey put the rebound into the back of the net.

Dempsey, who scored 53 seconds into the match against Barbados in the previous World Cup qualifying cycle, set a U.S. qualifying record by scoring 36 seconds into the match. He also moved into a tie for fourth all-time in the U.S. with eight World Cup qualifying goals.

Dempsey has scored in three straight qualifying games, but Klinsmann's men could have used one more.

Just as the case after Dempsey scored in the first half against Guatemala in the United States' previous qualifier last June, the Americans would concede the tying goal in an unlikely circumstance. Unlike their match in Guatemala, they couldn't walk away with a draw.

Jamaica couldn't get close to the U.S. net throughout the night, but perfectly taken free kicks by Austin and Shelton from well outside the box had Klinsmann's men, and the nearly sold-out crowd, completely shocked.

In the 24th minute, Austin drove a low shot through the U.S. wall, leaving Howard with no chance to make a play. In the 66th minute it was deja vu for the U.S. as Shelton beat Howard from distance.

Klinsmann entered the night looking for a positive result and did not view the match as a must-win with plenty of qualifying games left to play. But he may have to reevaluate his thinking heading back to the United States next week.

The U.S. was riding high after defeating Mexico at Azteca in August, but that was just a friendly.

Netherlands 2-0 Turkey: Van Persie and Narsingh seal Oranje victory

    208633hp2.jpg

Louis van Gaal's Netherlands squeezed past Turkey at the Amsterdam ArenA, securing a 2-0 win in its opening World Cup 2014 qualifier.

The game represented the new Dutch boss' first victory in an official match and while the scoreline looks good, the performance may suggest otherwise.

Turkey began at pace, attacking Netherlands and pressing them when not in possession. Their intent was clear right from the first corner, won in the first minute off the body of Kevin Strootman, as the visitors went close with a header.

Oranje took time to settle, but after 10 minutes started to impose themselves on the game. Crosses were fizzed in and corners were won, but the Turkish defense didn't seem too troubled and mopped them up with ease.

The first scare of the night came for Tim Krul and and Martins Indi, as some miscommunication nearly led to an own goal, and just as the Turks seemed to be reasserting their control, Netherlands struck to take the lead.

Robin van Persie continued his new-found trend of scoring with his head by nodding in from Inter star Wesley Sneijder's corner.

The 19th minute goal gave van Gaal's men temporary hope, but it was Abdullah Avci's side who came away from the restart stronger.

Sercan Yildrim and Arda Turan both went desperately close for The Crescent-Stars, while Luciano Narsingh should have done better when he found himself in a great position.

As the first half wore on, it became clear the Netherlands midfield weren't coping with the physicality of the game. Umut hit the bar with a header just before halftime, leaving Oranje counting their blessings at the interval.

Van Gaal introduced Richardo van Rhijn at half-time and replaced Jordy Clasie with Leroy Fer shortly after.

The changes allowed the Dutch to grab a hold of the game more efficiently and they proceeded to dominate the opening 10 minutes of the second-half.

Turkey, now resorting to the counter-attack in the face of a much-improved Oranje, went close to an equaliser when Hamit Altintop forced Tim Krul into a first-class save with a long-range effort.

On 60 minutes, there were chances at both ends. Van Persie got in the way of Arjen Robben's chipped effort for the hosts, while Sercan should have scored after beating van Rhijn to a header at the far post.

Sneijder and Robben began to combine well down the left side and produced a number of chances for their side to extend their lead, but the Turkish defence stood up to the challenge.

With the Dutch in control, van Gaal's men actively began to protect their lead rather than go all out for a second, while Turkey struggled to grab hold of the game despite the introduction of new Liverpool signing Nuri Sahin.

Ron Vlaar came on late for Jonny Heitinga to add solidity to the back line, and Narsingh scored late on with a chipped finish as Turkey piled forward in search of an equalizer.

The Dutch have opened their campaign with a much-needed confidence-boosting win after a dour Euro 2012 campaign, while Turkey will feel hard done by after an impressive showing.

First place in this group is far from assured on this showing for Oranje, who failed to control the game as they may have hoped before the encounter.

Germany 3-0 Faroe Islands: Ozil inspired in routine triumph

Germany put its recent run of poor results behind it getting a 3-0 win over Faroe Islands to start 2014 World Cup qualifying in Hannover.

Joachim Low's side dominated the match from start to finish, but a mixture between poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping from Gunnar Nielsen limited them to one goal, scored by Mario Gotze at the break.

The second half was a slightly easier affair for the hosts, who extended their lead through a Mesut Ozil double and ran out comfortable winners.

Unsurprisingly, it was the hosts who made all the early running after the match started. Thomas Muller's charge into the box was unceremoniously ended by Rogvi Baldvinsson, but Mesut Ozil could only lift the ball into the wall.

The Faroes had been resolute at the back, but going forward, they had offered next to nothing, with their only moment of note in the first half coming on 13 minutes when the ball dropped to Simun Samuelsen just inside the Germany box, but the 27-year-old miscued his volley, letting the opportunity slip.

The Faroese defense remained resolute to make goal-saving blocks to deny Schurrle, Lukas Podolski and even Lahm, before Podolski's first touch let him down in a promising area.

Neuer remained aware enough to block Christan Holst's long-range effort and gather it at the second attempt and deny the visitors a consolation goal.

And that was just about the end of the action. Germany coasted through the remaining minutes of the game and ended its two-game losing streak. The nation makes the short trip to Austria on Tuesday.
