Torres wins 100th Spain cap in Saudi Arabia friendly

    195272hp2.jpg

Fernando Torres continued his resurgence by winning his 100th cap in Spain's friendly clash with Saudi Arabia on Friday night.

The Chelsea striker has become just the sixth player in Spain’s history to achieve the feat, after making his debut as a 19-year-old against Portugal in 2003.

Since making his bow, the 28-year-old has enjoyed an impressive goalscoring record for his country, grabbing 31 goals in his century of appearances.

After a mixed 18 months following his move from Liverpool to Chelsea, Torres scored three goals as Spain went on to lift the European Championship crown over the summer and he could be the first of several current internationals to win 100 caps over the next 12 months.

Carles Puyol is just one cap short of reaching the milestone, while Sergio Ramos is just seven caps away at just 26-years-old.

    1.Iker Casillas 138
    2.Andoni Zubizarreta 126
    3.Xavi Hernandez 115
    4.Xabi Alonso 103
    5.Raul Gonzalez 102
    6.Fernando Torres 100
    7.Carles Puyol 99
    8.Sergio Ramos 93
    9.Fernando Hierro 89
    10.David Villa 82

Finland 0-1 France: Diaby gives Deschamps first competitive victory

France made a winning but rather unconvincing start to its World Cup 2014 qualification campaign, defeating Finland 1-0 in Helsinki.

In a group with defending champions Spain, Didier Deschamps’ men could not afford to drop points in their opening fixture and would win the game thanks to a well-taken strike from midfielder Abou Diaby midway through the first half.

France, as strong favorites to win the encounter, quickly assumed the role of dominant side, yet they were unable to fashion an opening in a Finnish defense that looked solid and resolute.

Indeed, it was the home side who created the first big opening of the match, but after springing the offside trap convincingly, Kasper Hamalainen dallied just long enough over his shot to allowed Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to execute a fine recovery challenge with the home fans crying for a penalty.

When les Bleus created their first opening, they were more clinical. Karim Benzema weaved past three players having dropped into a surprisingly deep position, but Diaby made up great ground to break beyond the striker, latch onto an inch-perfect pass and then steer a shot across Niki Maenpaa and into the net.

Though controlling the match, France would not really threaten to break clear until after the break, when it forced Maenpaa into two fine saves in quick succession. First Yohan Cabaye tried his luck with a swerving shot from the edge of the box only for the goalkeeper to claw it clear, and from the resultant corner a Yanga-Mbiwa header had the custodian at full stretch to grasp the ball.

Still very much in the game with 30 minutes remaining, the hosts seemed to gain belief that they could unsettle the young duo at the heart of the France defense. Teemu Pukki was the recipient of the hosts’ best chance, but when neat work down the right presented him with virtually an open goal 12-yards out, Anthony Reveillere saved the day for the visitors by clipping the ball off his toes.

Although France rarely looked in serious trouble, some sloppy marking from a corner late on presented Tim Sparv with a free header, yet this effort was saved by Hugo Lloris and the danger thereafter scrambled away.

While victory was imperative for France, the performance as a whole lacked assurance, and Deschamps has a great deal of work to do if his side is to trouble Spain in UEFA qualifying Group 10.

    Congratulations Spain!

:love:Spain 5-0 Saudi Arabia: Villa nets comeback goal in thumping friendly win

    208636hp2.jpg

Spain warmed up for its opening 2014 World Cup qualifier with a predictably facile 5-0 friendly win over Saudi Arabia on Friday night.

Santi Cazorla opened the scoring and Pedro doubled the home side's advantage soon after. Substitute Xavi netted a third two minutes into the second half before Barcelona teammate David Villa announced his return to the international arena by converting a penalty shortly after entering the fray.

Pedro then put the seal on an impressive individual display when he tucked away a terrific through-ball from David Silva with 17 minutes remaining.

The reigning world and two-time European champions, who take their first step on the road to Rio against Georgia next week, fielded an experimental starting lineup, with Xavi and Andres Iniesta among those named on the bench. However, La Roja still had far too much class for a game but limited Saudi Arabia side.

Indeed, the only surprise was that it took so long for them to break the deadlock, although that was primarily down to Fernando Torres' wayward finishing. The Chelsea man, who was making his 100th appearances for his country, wasted two fine through-balls inside the opening 10 minutes.

As it was, it was left to another member of Spain's Premier League contingent, Cazorla, to open the scoring. The Arsenal schemer tapped home from close range after Waleed Abdullah could only parry a shot from Pedro.

The latter made no mistake five minutes later, finding the back of the net with a delightful chip just moments after Nasser Al-Shamrani had gone close with a header for the visitors.

Cazorla, who had teed up Pedro for the second, then very nearly conjured a third goal for the home side but his sublime curling effort cruelly came back off the woodwork.

Still, Spain did put the outcome beyond all doubt when Xavi, who had replaced Cesc Fabregas during the interval, found the top corner with a free kick that saw the ball not only find its way past Abdullah - but also through a hole in the net.

The game now won, La Roja boss decided to make more changes and substitute Villa, who has only just recovered from the horrific leg break he suffered last December, made it 4-0 from the penalty spot, after Sayyaf Al-Beeshi had felled Monreal in the area.

Pedro then heaped further misery on the beleaguered Saudis when he latched onto a defense-splitting pass from David Silva before coolly dinking the ball over Abdullah, putting himself in real contention for a starting berth in Tuesday's Group I clash with Georgia in Tbilisi.

Moldova 0-5 England: Lampard double sets up dominant win for Hodgson's men

    208625hp2.jpg

England began their World Cup 2014 qualification campaign with a dominant victory away in Moldova.

Frank Lampard buried a penalty within just three minutes before heading in a second and Jermain Defoe's threaded finish put Roy Hodgson's men 3-0 up at half-time.

Coasting in the second half, James Milner and Leighton Baines both nonetheless scored their first international goals to complete a comfortable performance.

Hodgson followed through on his pre-match suggestion of pairing Lampard and Steven Gerrard in the centre of midfield, with Tom Cleverley pushed further upfield to play off lone striker Defoe. Leighton Baines made his first competitive start in place of the injured Ashley Cole.

With England immediately taking control of the game, they were handed a rather fortunate opportunity to secure an immediate lead.

Three minutes in, Cleverley’s shot hit the arm of Semion Bulgaru for a penalty, though the right-back had been so close to the Manchester United man that he could hardly have moved out of the way any quicker.

Lampard stepped up to score his eighth penalty in national colours, becoming the Three Lions’ most successful spot-kick-taker in the process, and the visitors were already comfortable.

Moldova looked in for a long evening, Defoe missing from close range after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s enterprising run and cut-back before goalkeeper Stanislav Namasco saved well from both players.

The hosts got hold of the ball enough to go forward for the first time on 18 minutes, Artur Patras picking up possession around 25 yards out and firing while he had the chance. His effort flew just close enough to warn England that the job was nowhere near done.

Another handball allowed England a promising free kick in the 24th minute but Gerrard’s keeper-bypassing swerve inclined just over at the last second.

Glen Johnson advanced for Hodgson’s flowing side and, being left unchallenged, took the opportunity to cut inside and shoot low with his left foot. Namasco let it slip but Moldova cleared just in time.

The putting-down of Moldova’s mini-resurgence in confidence was sealed when Johnson spotted Lampard’s trademark late run into the box and picked the midfielder out with a fantastic cross, which the Chelsea man headed in with no trouble for his second.

With a sense of inevitability now blanketing proceedings, Cleverley flashed inches wide as he aimed to open his international account, but Defoe had better luck moments later when he ran intelligently into the path of an Oxlade-Chamberlain pass to fire home, though Namasco should have done more than let it slip through his hands.

As England coasted and broke out the tricks, Moldova arguably should have struck back just before half-time. From a rare set-piece, Igor Armas rose strongly above the defence but headed barely wide.

With Gerrard withdrawn for Michael Carrick at the break, England were made to raise an eyebrow when Igor Picusciac held off his marker in the box to shoot, though it was easily off target.

England were relaxed and Patras was allowed space into which to run after 53 minutes but, frustratingly for the hosts, his attempted through-ball was into the path of the defenders rather than Picusciac.

It became clear that the visitors had slowed with complacency and Moldova had time to build. They were unlucky when a prolonged catalogue of poor passes from either side ended in Serghei Covalciuc miscontrolling and letting England off the hook.

The visitors now sat and waited to counter, the impressive Oxlade-Chamberlain substituted for Theo Walcott to add more threat down the right, but increased possession at the back did little for Moldova’s penetration up front.

Cleverley reminded them of England's superiority by cutting a shot wide from the left in the 66th minute but Hodgson's men were now assuredly quiet.

As the away side coasted, Danny Welbeck was introduced for Defoe and his patient combination with Cleverley and Walcott forged space for the latter to pull it back for Milner, who thumped home a fourth.

The pressure off, Moldova kept coming forward and won the occasional corner, Patras looking useful in the delivery and Joe Hart even having to make a routine save, but hope was long gone.

A torrid night for the hosts was compounded by Baines' 83rd-minute free kick taking a huge deflection off the shoulder of a man in the wall before dropping into the net, the streakiest of first international goals for the nonetheless-delighted left-back.

Perhaps England's only concern of the evening was when John Terry, having tried to shake off an injury, gave up and came off to leave them with 10 men for the final moments. Questions now will surround his fitness to face Ukraine but it will have been one of the only questions after a comprehensive victory was confirmed by the full-time whistle.

Mourinho wary of Dortmund threat in Champions League

    207440hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/spain/124/real-madrid-cfReal Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has labelled Borussia Dortmund a threat to his side's progression from Group D of the Champions League, which also features Manchester City and Ajax.

The Portuguese praised the progress exhibited by the German champion over the past couple of seasons, and maintained Los Blancos would have to be wary of their opponent's capabilities.

"I'm not sure [if Manchester City are our biggest opponents]. Borussia Dortmund have been champions of Germany twice in a row," cautioned the 49-year-old to AS. "They are well organized and very experienced, with many international-caliber players from Germany, and the top two from Poland. Their stadium and fans are impressive too."

Mourinho then aimed a sideswipe at Roberto Mancini's Premier League winning side, claiming all the money in the world would not necessarily buy the club European success.

"The Abu Dhabi investors have invested so much, because they want to ensure the European Cup does not slip out of their hands," the former Chelsea boss added. "Nevertheless, the tradition of clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich cannot be bought. The best players in the world will always go there."

    Oxlade-Chamberlain buoyed by England support

    191635hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/england/16/englandEngland and Arsenal starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has hailed the advice and support that he has been given by his international teammates.

The teenager starred in the Three Lions' comfortable 5-0 win over Moldova on Friday and is hoping to have done enough to face Ukraine at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

"I get endless advice on all sorts of things offensively and attacking," the 19-year-old told the Daily Mirror. "It's more team, tactical advice. Not being as experienced as everyone else, they can always help me out on that side of the game and then everyone just says: 'When you get in the attacking third, do your stuff'.

"That gives me the license to know they are backing me and have confidence in me to let off the handbrake and do what I can do.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the past 12 months since moving to Arsenal from Southampton, bursting into the Gunners' first team before making an impression on the international front, featuring at Euro 2012 for England, but the midfielder insists that he is only getting started.

"I've got a long way to go, so I just make sure I work hard and take every training session and game day by day, and push on from there," he added.

"This is just the start of my career and I've got to keep working very hard day in, day out to keep making sure I get in the team. It's not going to be easy for me, but I need to try to make it happen.

"I try to be very hard working, but when I get on the pitch I just rely on my ability and trust in myself. That's all I can do."

Hoilett calls for time to settle at QPR

    204436hp2.jpg

Junior Hoilett admits that it will take time for him and his teammates to fully click at new club QPR.

The Canadian joined the Loftus Road outfit from relegated Blackburn this summer but has only managed to make one appearance for Mark Hughes' side so far this campaign.

Hoilett's arrival at QPR was one of 11 new signings by the London club in the summer transfer window.

The winger is aware that he will need to be in top form to compete for a regular place in the Hoops' starting line-up this season but believes that Hughes is the right manager to bring the best out of him.

He told the Daily Mirror: "One of my aims is to get the ball in the back of the net and create chances for others.

"You always need a bit of time to settle in to your new club. It won’t be long before we are all up to speed. Working with a manager like Mark Hughes is great for a young player."

Simeone: Falcao on par with Hugo Sanchez

    208098hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has hailed the recent goalscoring form of striker Radamel Falcao, labeling his exploits as on level with those of Mexico icon Hugo Sanchez.

The Colombian notably netted a double in Los Rojiblancos' Europa League success over Primera Division counterparts Athletic Bilbao last season, while his hat trick in the first half against Chelsea during the European Super Cup stole the show.

Also scoring for his country on Friday in their World Cup 2014 qualifier against Uruguay, the 27-year-old left Simeone with only one player to compare his club's talisman with.

"For me, Falcao is as good as Hugo Sanchez, or even better," applauded the Argentine to AS. "While Hugo was very much Hugo, Falcao has the great virtue of trying to come out better in every match compared to the previous one."

"He has voracity and an intuition in the area that I've only seen in Hugo Sanchez. As a finisher he's like Hugo, but he's even more complete. I've known Radamel since his time at River Plate, and I'm sure that he'll keep on growing; that he'll become a world No.1. I have complete faith in him."

The striker has already repaid his coach's trust by netting three goals in two appearances for Atleti in the Spanish top flight thus far.

Posting on the social networking website Twitter, Aguero confirmed he has not managed to shake off his knock in time to feature for his country.

He said: "It seems I won't be able to make it to the Peru match - but the effort was still worth it, I'll continue the recovery work at Manchester.

Recent rumors have claimed the 34-year-old and former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka have been caught up in a boardroom dispute over wages at the Chinese Super League outfit in the past few weeks, ultimately sparking speculation over the duo’s future.

The Cote d'Ivoire international was linked with a shock move to Liverpool as well as Spanish giant Real Madrid during the transfer window, but remains with Shenhua.

Drogba has claimed that he will remain in China, in order to maintain his fitness ahead of his country's Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

Falcao's father's comments are not important, insists Atletico president

The Colombian has been in fine form in recent weeks, netting back-to-back hat-tricks in his side's recent wins over Athletic Bilbao and Chelsea.

The 26-year old's father subsequently claimed his son was keen to make a move to city-rivals Real Madrid, while Goal.com revealed that Manchester City was preparing a 60 million euro bid for the South American.

"I don't consider it important if a player does not confirm his intention of leaving," the Vicente Calderon supremo is quoted as saying by AS.

"A father can talk about his sons, of course, but Falcao has already explained he is very happy here and he still has four years remaining on his contract."

"We are in a great moment now, very happy. We have to keep calm: Falcao is not leaving."

Atletico Madrid will return to domestic duty when it welcomes Rayo Vallecano on Sept. 16.

Scotland 0-0 Serbia: Hampden Park stalemate provides the far from perfect start for Levein's men

    208790hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/scotland/434/scotlandScotland began its 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign in disappointing fashion as it was held to a 0-0 draw against Serbia at Hampden Park.

The Serbs, who had won just one of their last 10 matches, were worth their point but Craig Levein will be sure to reflect on a largely wasteful afternoon in front of goal for his side.
Steven Naismith was the main culprit as he missed a golden chance to secure all three points when he was put clean through, but his indecision cost him dearly as his effort sailed wide of Vladimir Stojkovic's post.Serbia created numerous chances, as its technical superiority often told, but found Allan McGregor in top form as he served up fantastic stops to deny Aleksandar Kolarov, Danko Lazovic and Dusko Tadic.

In what was a frantic opening at Hampden Park, both sides looked to kick-start their qualifying campaigns and it was the hosts who carved out the first meaningful opening of the match.New Everton signing Naismith escaped down the Serbia left but when he shifted the ball onto his right foot, as he sought to narrow the angle, his low effort was blocked.

Just minutes later, the Scots could have been behind. McGregor had to have his wits about him early on to deal with Kolarov's low free-kick. The Besiktas keeper produced a superb stop low down to keep out the Manchester City wing back's bending strike around the

    wall.

Robert Snodgrass was proving a constant thorn to the Serbian defense and after a free-kick was taken quickly, following a foul on the Norwich winger, he escaped his man with ease but could not quite apply the finishing touch with teammate Miller crying out for it in the middle.

Manchester City's new signing Matija Nastasic was enduring a torrid time at center half, looking nervy in a very suspect Serbian backline and received the first booking of the game for a reckless tackle on the onrushing Alan Hutton, with the Aston Villa man looking set to escape down the right flank.

The Scots' tempo had increased throughout the match but the Serbs offered a timely reminder that they were still part of the contest as a powerful strike from Lazovic from the edge of the area forced McGregor into a low stop.

After a fairly insipid opening to the second half, Aleksandar Ignjovski tried an ambitious shot from the edge of the area, with a powerful, swerving effort as he looked to make the breakthrough and secure what could be a crucial win for his nation on the road.

The pace of the game began to slow, with both sides looking tentative but Mihajlovic sought more creative impetus up front and reacted by throwing on Tadic for Lazovic on the hour mark.

Miller's superb movement caused Serbia trouble from a few corners with Morrison's lofted passes finding the veteran striker, but he was unable to turn in the best opportunity he mustered for himself with Stojkovic blocking his dinked shot. Then, within a matter of minutes, the two best chances for both sides came, and sadly, went.

Kolarov was the first to come close to breaking the deadlock, as he gathered a fizzed ball into his path and rifled in a low strike which flew just inches beyond McGregor's far post.
But it would be the hosts who would miss an absolute sitter to seize the lead they craved on the break.

Naismith was the beneficiary of some superb play from the excellent Caldwell, but after being released by the Wigan stalwart, he clipped harmlessly wide of the post with just the keeper to beat in what would be the best Scottish chance all afternoon.

There was still time for both sides to try and find that elusive opening, and surely winning, strike but when McGregor dealt with Tadic's low effort well and Stojkovic denied a hurried low shot from substitute Forrest, the time was up for both.

For both sides, it can be seen as a hard-fought point, but after Levein insisted that his side was capable of winning every game in the group, it may well be the Scots that will go home the more frustrated with this result.

Injury rules Ashley Cole out of England clash with Ukraine

    194037hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/england/16/englandEngland defender Ashley Cole has been ruled out of the Three Lions' World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday with an ankle injury.

Cole has been struggling with the problem that he picked up in Chelsea’s 4-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup, and missed England’s 5-0 win over Moldova on Friday.

Leighton Baines deputized for Cole at left back against Moldova, and scored his first international goal, and England's fifth of the game, from a free-kick.

John Terry, meanwhile, is a doubt for the clash with Ukraine at Wembley.

The Chelsea captain is receiving treatment for his own ankle injury that he picked up against the Moldovans.

Terry limped through the final 20 minutes of the game in central midfield as manager Roy Hodgson had used all three substitutes.

However, speaking after the game the England manager was optimistic about his prospects claiming the injury was not long-term.

Messi urges Argentina teammates to keep up the pace

    208695hp2.jpg

http://www.goal.com/en-us/teams/argentina/208/argentinaArgentina forward http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/argentina/8012/lionel-messi/nationalMessi has praised his side's showing in its 3-1 World Cup qualifying win over Paraguay.

The Albiceleste took the lead minutes into the tie courtesy of a Angel Di Maria effort, with Gonzalo Higuain and the 25-year-old also finding the net to help the Argentines move to the top of their group, but the Barcelona star has warned his teammates that their task is far from complete.

"Being top of the table is not important. We have to do as well as we can," the Barcelona ace told reporters following the match.

"I messed up my first header and it hit the post. The first free kick was also an unlucky one, but luckily I was able to score [my third chance].

"We knew they would close it up at the back, how they would come and play and what was at stake. We made a quick opening, then they scored a penalty but we recovered and put in a good game."

Messi's compatriot Angel Di Maria, has also expressed his delight at the victory, and believes his nation is on course to reach the tournament.

"We wanted to make the fans happy," the Real Madrid forward explained.

"The team is good. We have to keep it up and improve on some things, but we are on track to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil."

The Seleccion will look to build on its recent win it takes on Peru on Sept. 12.
