Getafe 1-4 Barcelona: Messi nets double from bench in straightforward triumph

    210620hp2.jpg

Barcelona maintained its 100 percent start to the season as it defeated Getafe 4-1 at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

The Catalan giants labored during the early stages of the match but took a single-goal lead into the break through Adriano Correia. Second-half substitute Lionel Messi then netted a brace before a Javier Mascherano own goal robbed the visitors of a clean sheet, but David Villa rounded off the win.

A number of injuries meant that Barcelona's attack had an almost second-string look to it, with Pedro, Cesc Fabregas and Cristian Tello leading the line while Messi and Villa, who were lacking in fitness, started on the bench.

The Blaugrana controlled possession throughout the first half but did not use the wings effectively enough. A number of times Tello wasted the ball as he tried to beat defenders, only to over-hit his touch and run it out of play.

Therefore it was not until the 26th minute that Tito Vilanova's side eventually threatened the hosts' goal. Thiago Alcantara dribbled through the center of the park, riding two challenges before striking the ball, but his effort crashed off the bar and went behind.

Barca was lacking fluency up top but it was a swift break after Pedro Leon's scuffed volley was saved that enabled it to break the deadlock in the 32nd minute. Cesc skipped past Alberto Lopo before slipping the ball to Adriano and the Brazilian swept it under the keeper.

Thiago almost doubled the lead two minutes later as he controlled a cross on his chest in the area and volleyed the ball at goal. Moya, desperate not to be beaten again, dived down to his left and clawed the ball away from the bottom corner.

The momentum stayed with Barcelona after the restart but again it seemed limp in attack. Tello spurned two chances to add to his side's tally before the hour mark and so Vilanova brought Messi into the action.

The visitors were awarded a spot kick in the 74th minute as Pedro cut inside of Juan Valera and was brought down by the defender's trailing leg. Messi stepped up to take it and, although Moya got a hand to it, he converted straight down the middle.

Messi then added gloss to the scoreline by scoring his second in the 78th minute as he tapped in at the back post after Pedro's cross was deflected into his path.

Almost instantly Getafe pulled one back as Pablo Sarabia's shot took a double-deflection off of Adriano and Mascherano and flew in at the near post with Victor Valdes nowhere near it.

To atone for its errors, Barca continued to attack and it managed to score a fourth before time was out. Villa, emulating his feat of scoring from the bench for Spain last week, latched onto a ball over the top and slotted the ball under Moya.

Though the result may have been somewhat flattering for Barcelona it moved back to the summit of the league with a two-point advantage over its nearest rival, Malaga.

Rodgers insists he has no issues with 'first-class' Reina

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has insisted he has no problem with keeper Pepe Reina and believes him still to be a key player at the club.

"I've never had a problem with Pepe. He's been brilliant for me. He's a key member of the squad here," Rodgers told reporters.

The Spaniard has endured a difficult start to the season and has struggled for form, making high-profile errors against Hearts in the Europa League and Arsenal.

Reports suggested Reina could be set to leave Anfield, but his manager has stated he wants to keeper to remain at the club and is adamant he has no problem with him.

"He's been absolutely first class. He understands what it is I'm trying to do. He understands the philosophy and he's a really, really good guy," Rodgers said.

He added, "Off the field, he's important for the group, he's a big voice in the changing room, and I've had no feelings at all that he's ever wanted to leave. I've never felt anything like that whatsoever.

"I've good communication with him. I speak regularly with Pepe. He's one of the senior players."

Montpellier boss Girard: Arsenal will have to work for victory

    187609hp2.jpg

Montpellier manager Rene Girard has warned Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that his side will need to be firing on all cylinders to pick up three points at the Stade de la Mosson when the pair meet in the Champions League next week.

The 58-year-old made the comments ahead of Friday night’s Ligue 1 clash with Reims at the Stade Auguste Delaune.

The French Champions have begun the campaign in less than convincing style, though, did beat Sochaux 3-1 before the international break and Girard insists Arsene Wenger's men will have to be at their best when the pair spoke at a Champions League managers meeting earlier this week.

Girard said: “It was good to see him; we've known each other for a long time. He was in fine form, so I hope his team isn't doing as well as he is!”

“There's a lot of respect there. We spoke a lot about the upcoming match. He knows that we’re a good side and that his lads will have to be on the money to come out of it with the three points."

It is the first time Montpellier have reached Europe's most prestigious tournament and it will also see the return of Olivier Giroud who left the Ligue 1 side for the Gunners in the summer.

Nene: I was too expensive for AC Milan

    201536hp2.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain winger Nene has revealed Serie A giants AC Milan tried to capture his signature but fell short of of the club's valuation.

The fee demanded by Les Parisens was believed to be 7 million euros which was outside what the Rossoneri was willing to pay.
It's been a summer of transition for Milan but the former Espanyol player was not one of the players to make it to the Guiseppe Meazza as PSG's sporting director said its bid was not high enough.

“Leonardo told me that it was not possible because of the amount that PSG asked for me," Nene told L'Equipe.
The 31-year-old however, believes a move away in the near future could happen.“In January, leaving PSG is a possibility," he added.

"I think I can still play in Europe for another three years at a high level.”Milan also enquired about defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa according to Montpellier president Laurent Nicollin who told French radio station RMC that Milan tried to sign the 23-year-old at the end of the transfer window but was unsuccessful.

Nicollin said: “There was a desire for Mbiwa to stay and renew with us, then came Milan and that had created a bit of confusion.”

    Klose reveals late Tottenham interest

Lazio striker Miroslav Klose has claimed that Tottenham made a late move for him during the transfer window but that he turned down the switch in favor of extending his stay in Italy.

The 34-year-old, who has scored 64 goals in 124 appearances for Germany, moved to Vladimir Petkovic's side from Bayern Munich at the start of last season and underlined his desire to show "respect" by staying.

"Tottenham came looking for me, but I signed for Lazio until 2014 and I intend to respect that contract," Klose told sportal.it.

Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has just two strikers in his first-team squad at the moment, Jermain Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor, having loaned out Harry Kane to Norwich for the season.

Tottenham also failed to complete a late deadline day swoop for Porto playmaker Joao Moutinho, although it did manage to secure deals to sign Fulham duo Mousa Dembele and Clint Dempsey.

Vertonghen: Arsenal tried to sign me

    205474hp2.jpg

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he was also contacted by Arsenal during the summer transfer, but eventually opted to join the Spurs as they gave him 'a good feeling'.

The Belgium international signed a long-term contract with the White Hart Lane outfit over the summer, and has gone on to start two of the team's three Premier League matches so far.

His future was uncertain for a long time, however, and the former Ajax captain revealed he questioned Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp over both clubs.

"[Bergkamp] knows Tottenham are a very big club. He's a very good guy, and I get along with him very well," the 25-year old told Sky Sports. "I chose Spurs because they gave me a good feeling. I spoke to Daniel Levy and Rafael van der Vaart. Arsenal did try to sign me, but I'd already made my decision that I wanted to play [for Spurs].

"Thomas [Vermaelen] told me [the Arsenal and Tottenham rivalry] was like Ajax and Feyenoord. They're big rivals but when I walk down the street even the Arsenal fans have been very respectful."

Tottenham will look to secure its first victory of the season when the club travels to Reading on Sunday.

Vilanova thrilled with Barcelona victory over Getafe

    204663hp2.jpg

Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has praised his side's resolve after securing a 4-1 victory away to Getafe, a fixture that the club suffered defeat in last season.

Goals from Adriano, a double from substitute Lionel Messi and a solitary David Villa strike ensured a big win for the Catalan giant, which tops La Liga with a 100 percent record.

Vilanova was quick to point out that Barcelona had won both games away to the Azulones, as well as Osasuna, defeats which ultimately derailed the team's title hopes last season.

"We have 12 points out of 12 possible. The team has been controlled at all times, knowing how badly we had it last year," the 42-year-old told Sport. "We have had enough patience, and we can achieve more goals. It is good for everyone to know that we lost in Pamplona and Getafe [last season], and this year we won. There are never easy games, but there are many points at stake."

On the subject of Messi, who started from the bench, Vilanova insisted that it was as a result of jet-lag, with the Argentine coming on in the second half to score twice.

"I talked to him, he [played in] tough games, with a strong preseason," he said. "He came form a trip with the national team and [wanted to] start, but I thought he should be rested and so I used him in a more open game."

Club captain Carles Puyol suffered another injury setback after being replaced by Javier Mascherano in the 57th minute and the Barca boss expressed his disappointment at the latest injury.

"We will see tomorrow after further testing and the scope and timescale [of how long Puyol will be out for]," Vilanova explained. "It is a problem because we have issues in central defense and Puyol is very important to our team. [He is a] player that gives us a lot and we hope he returns as soon as possible."

Barcelona welcomes Spartak Moscow to Camp Nou as the club begins its quest for a third Champions League title in five years on Tuesday.

Roma coach Zeman slams modern attitudes

    207847hp2.jpg

Roma coach Zdenek Zeman has taken a swipe at the behavior of modern footballers, slamming their financial motives and contracts which endorse unsportsmanlike behavior.

The experienced manager took over the reigns at the Stadio Olimpico this summer and stated his belief that the lucrative contracts given to many top players are harming the image of the game.

"Football is simplicity? It should be," Zeman told Sette. "But many players complicate life. Football is becoming more and more of an individual sport. Players score more goals, become more famous, and earn more money.

"The character really does not matter. We need to learn to respect our opponents and the referees."

He went on to criticize the clauses often included in modern contracts, claiming they encourage actions on the field geared towards activating certain bonuses.

"There are players who receive bonuses depending on how many penalties they win," he revealed. "These contracts push players to simulate falls in the area, do they not?"

Roma faces Bologna on Sunday, as the club looks to build on its impressive victory over Inter in its last Serie A outing.

Marseille's Andre Ayew: We have the quality to win Ligue 1

    210668hp2.jpg

Marseille winger Andre Ayew believes his side now has the quality to win the Ligue 1 title this season.

The Ghanaian international was part of the les Phoceens side which finished in a mediocre 10th place last season, but managed to progress to the Champions League quarterfinals before losing 4-0 on aggregate to Bayern Munich.

However, under Elie Baup, the French giant has surged to the top of Ligue 1, winning four out of four games, a feat Ayew sees as a reflection of the quality at the club.

"No [I am not surprised by league start]. Most of our players were quarterfinalists in the Champions League, and also won the Coupe de la Ligue," Ayew was quoted as saying by RMC Sport. "It is true that we did not need anything, we know what we want to do together. Everyone wants to take responsibility and move forward.

"The president and other senior leaders have said that the goal was top five. But when you play at Marseille, [the goal] is to be top of the table. We have the players to go far and be on the podium.

L'OM travels to Nancy on Sunday.

Mourinho: Manchester City can't buy Real Madrid's trophies and history

    207442hp2.jpg

Jose Mourinho has taunted Manchester City before the club's Champions League battle with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday evening, declaring that, while Roberto Mancini's side may currently be winning trophies, no other club can compare when it comes to Madrid's glittering past.

The Portuguese coach is well-known for his mind games, and his latest comments could be seen as an attempt to protect his side should it struggle in the opening group stage game against the star additions at City.

"There are some things that money can’t buy - trophies and history," he told The Sun. "Real Madrid is Real Madrid, it's the real thing. A club no football result, no cup competition, no coach, no player can ever change. Quite simply Real Madrid is a club like no other. It's incomparable with any other club in the world.

"There is no team anywhere that can be compared with Real Madrid. None."

Mourinho contrasted the outlook of both clubs, suggesting that while City's owners will be desperate to announce themselves on the global stage with a Champions League crown, the pressure on him to deliver one at Madrid is tempered by the club's huge past trophy haul.

"This [City] is a team being created to lift the Champions League, that's their aim," he said. "A lot of top managers and clubs have never won a Champions League. So if I have won it twice and Real have won it a record nine times... well we should say 'Thanks to God'. And if a third comes for me and a 10th title comes for Real Madrid this season - amazing.

“We will accept it all with a smile. But there is no pressure on us. There is no obsession to win it here. There are great clubs but the pressure and the expectation is the greatest here at Real Madrid. It is huge but it is an enjoyable pressure, not a suffocating one."

Mourinho did have praise for Mancini's team, however, describing it as "a powerful side", and singled out Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli as City's danger men for the tie.

"I don't like to speak about opponents individually but it's no problem to say that we respect Carlos Tevez a lot," the manager went on. "I also know Mario Balotelli and the player he is because we were together at Inter for two years and so he certainly has nothing to prove to me."

Rodgers defends 'outstanding' Suarez after booking for diving

    210537hp2.jpg

Brendan Rodgers has defended Luis Suarez after the striker was deemed to have dived during Liverpool's draw with Sunderland.

The striker recovered from the controversial yellow card in the first half to pull his side level after the break.

Suarez was adjudged to have dived following a John O’Shea tackle and entered the referee’s book for the incident, but replays have since shown that contact on the Reds forward was made.

"I have not seen that [replays]," Rodgers told ESPN. "The only side I know is he is a real good guy, a wonderful football player and a very good man.

"He comes in and works very hard. I have not seen anything [bad]. His finish was outstanding. He always causes problems, he's had to play in a couple of positions, but I though overall he was outstanding."

Liverpool found itself a goal down following an impressive Steven Fletcher strike, but Rodgers is pleased with his club’s strong response from conceding.

"We are disappointed with the goal, we dominated the first half and then conceded the first goal against the run of play. But our reaction, we upped the tempo; the speed of passing and movement was much better and our aggression was much better. It was the least we deserved.

“We will take a point, although we are disappointed not to take all three. It bodes well for us going forward."

Vilanova hails Fabregas' influence on Barcelona victory

    208041hp2.jpg

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has highlighted the role midfield lynchpin Cesc Fabregas played in his side's 4-1 demolition of Getafe, praising the former Arsenal man's performance.

The 25-year-old has reportedly has been at odds over his stance regarding remarks made toward the tactics employed by former boss Pep Guardiola, with sources claiming an exit from Camp Nou was a possibility. Based on the playmaker's performances however, everything is fine and good with the club's La Masia youth product, after his displays in the center wore his opponents thin, according to his coach.

"We came out very well from the beginning, and controlled the game at all times. We might even have scored one more," Vilanova said at the post-match press conference. "Fabregas showed great gusto and played very well.

"It's really not surprising though, given how well he has trained recently. He enjoyed a really great match alongside Xavi."

David Villa, who came off the bench to score, lent his voice in unison to his coach.

"Fabregas was euphoric after the game. I suppose that's why he had that grin on his face," the Spain international told Radio Catalunya.

"We have a very versatile tactical set-up, with players who can feature in many positions," continued Gerard Pique to Canal Plus. "We may employ different schemes, but always with the same philosophy, to dominate."

The latest Primera Division success ensures Barcelona heads off to begin its Champions League campaign on the right note, something Xavi was eager to highlight.

"We face the Champions League with high hopes and eagerness. We'll be leaving for Russia with the intention to win," the veteran told the press conference.

Puyol's injury proved to be the only sour note on the night, with the Barcelona captain joining a lengthy injury list including Andres Iniesta, Alexis Sanchez and Jordi Alba.

"We'll see how bad it is when we conduct more tests tomorrow," Vilanova signed off as saying. "He is an important player, and hope he can be back soon."

The 34-year-old is believed to have strained knee ligaments, with an initial prognosis suggesting the recovery period could be as long as six weeks. Puyol is therefore likely to miss his team's crunch Primera Division tie against Spain champion Real Madrid.

AC Milan's Allegri: I'm a little bit worried, it's not good enough to be playing like this

    207834hp2.jpg

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has shrugged off criticism in the wake of overseeing the club's worst home start to the season since 1930, claiming his side requires patience after succumbing 1-0 to Atalanta.

Despite dominating the match for large spells, Luca Cigarini struck the sucker-punch for the away side, leaving Allegri with the unenviable record of having only collected three points from as many fixtures, while speculation continues to mount over the security of his position as coach.

"We only had one more point at this stage last season," argued the 45-year-old at a press conference. “The team has certainly changed a great deal."

"I admit to being a little bit worried, because it’s not good enough to be playing like this. We need to be more positive and carefree. The lads have to grow up and realize playing with nervousness will not allow us to progress.

“We definitely have to get back on track, but more on a psychological level rather than a technical one. There are some young lads here and they need to grow up quickly."

The last time Milan slumped to consecutive defeats at home in opening fixtures occurred over 80 years ago, with the consecutive San Siro losses to Sampdoria and Stefano Colantuono's Orobici condemning its only win of the season, against Bologna, to distant memory.

Allegri's men will have the opportunity to redeem themselves on Tuesday, when they host Anderlecht in Champions League action.

AC Milan 0-1 Atalanta: Cigarini heaps more San Siro misery on Rossoneri

    210634hp2.jpg

Atalanta condemned Milan to its second straight home defeat in the Serie A after the Rossoneri went down 1-0 thanks to Luca Cigarini's second-half strike.

Max Allegri gave new signing Nigel De Jong his first start of the season while Andrea Consigli reached a landmark as he made his 200th appearance for Atalanta.

The host started the better of the two sides as it dominated possession in the early exchanges. However, it could not translate it into chances. In fact, it was the visitors that came closest to opening the scoring when Germain Denis lashed the ball onto the post.

By this stage the Orobici were growing in confidence at they carved out two more opportunities within minutes of each other. It was Denis again who had a glimpse on goal but his shot missed the target altogether this time. Then Maxmilliano Moralez fired in from 25 yards. However, he also failed to test Cristian Abbiati in the Milan goal.

After a nervy spell, the Rossoneri finally had their first goal scoring opportunity. A surging run through midfield by Urby Emmanuelson created a chance for Stephen El Sharaawy, whose low drive Consigli could only parry.

Moments later Massimo Ambrosini's powerful shot from outside the box proved too hot for Consigli to hold but Giampaolo Pazzini was just beaten to the rebound by Thomas Manfredini.

The two teams traded blows before half time, Moralez drawing a save from Abbiati before El Sharaawy's neat turn and volley forced Consigli into another save.

Milan began the second half in dominant fashion yet it continued to struggle to create chances. Again, like in the opening period, it was Atalanta which created the first scoring chance when Davide Brivio unleashed a stinging shot that Abbiati could not hold.Allegri then introduced Antonio Nocerino into proceedings as the Italy international replaced Massimo Ambrosini who picked up a knock.

Up front E Sharaawy was proving to be Milan's best hope of breaking the deadlock and it was he who had the next chance for the hosts when his powerful effort on 57 was only punched away by Consigli.

The breakthrough did eventually come, but it was the visitor that went ahead. After some good play, Germain Denis teed up Luca Cigarini, who slotted the ball home into the bottom corner.

Milan responded well by pushing forward. In an attempt to get back into the game, Bojan was introduced for El Sharaawy. Stefano Colantuono responded by bringing on Michele Ferri for Brivio.

Pazzini was then presented with a terrific chance after some great work by Urby Emmanuelson but the former Inter man could not get a touch on the Dutchman's shot-cum-cross. Boateng then had a chance to pull the host level, but, after beating his marker, his left-footed attempt flew over the bar.

While the Rossoneri pushed more and more forward, Atalanta almost doubled its lead five minutes from time and perhaps should have when Moralez had only Abbiati to beat but his shot missed the target completely.Allegri's side pushed forward in desperation in the closing stages. However, it ran out of time as the match ended 1-0 to the Orobici.

The defeat means Milan has only picked up three points from a possible nine so far this season while the visitor will be delighted to have recorded its first three points.

Sevilla 1-0 Real Madrid: Trochowski strikes to heap misery on Mourinho's men

    210652hp2.jpg

Real Madrid's stuttering start to the defense of its Liga crown continued as it fell to a 1-0 defeat to Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

The Rojiblancos had not beaten the club from the capital since October 2009 but got off to a great start as Piotr Trochowski put them ahead inside two minutes. But in a highly-charged encounter Los Blancos were unable to equalize, hitting the woodwork twice in the second half as they succumbed to their second league defeat of the season.

The match started at a frenetic pace with the hosts taking the game straight to Jose Mourinho's men. A shot from the edge of the box inside the first minute was spilled back into the danger area by Iker Casillas but he recovered to stop Alvaro Negredo from tapping in the rebound.

Ivan Rakitic took the resultant corner and he dropped it on the penalty spot where it was met by Trochowski, who had escaped the loose marking of Angel Di Maria, and he volleyed into the roof of the net with aplomb.

Clearly aggravated at going behind, the visitors' tempers began to flair and Gonzalo Higuain was fortunate to remain on the pitch after kicking out on Fernando Navarro despite winning a free kick for his side.

He confronted the left back again moments later, but in the 10th minute attentions were turned back to the goal mouth. Cristiano Ronaldo thumped a free kick over the wall from 20 yards but his effort was too close to Andres Palop who dived across and turned it behind. The 'keeper then denied the Portuguese seconds later following a speculative attempt from deep.

Madrid began to assert themselves as the game went on and with 20 minutes played Mesut Ozil fed Higuain at the top of the box. The striker did superbly to spin his marker but he could not add an equally impressive finish, slicing his shot high and wide.

In an attempt to bring his side back into the match Mourinho replaced the disappointing Di Maria and Ozil with Luka Modric and Karim Benzema at half time.

The Croatian had an immediate impact as within just seven minutes he almost drew the visitors level. From long range, Modric caught the ball superbly but Palop again got an important touch, tipping the effort onto the post.

With Sevilla unable to retain the ball, the reigning Liga champion hit the woodwork again on the hour mark. Palop failed to clear a free kick from the left and Benzema controlled the ball at the back post. He volleyed it across goal but Sergio Ramos headed onto the bar from inside the six-yard box.

Madrid continued to search for an equalizer but its efforts proved in vain as the host remained compact at the back despite dropping deeper and deeper in the closing stages. Ronaldo saw his free kick in the final minute of stoppage time fly over the bar in what proved to be the last chance of the game.

Victory moves Sevilla up to third in the table, but it may fall from there depending on Sunday's games. Real Madrid meanwhile sits eight points behind arch rival Barcelona in a lowly 12th position, and it could see that worsen if this weekend's remaining results go against them.

Clint Dempsey made his Tottenhan debut on Sunday, playing the final 12 minutes in his new team's comfortable 3-1 road victory over Reading.

The American slotted in at midfield, playing in a wide left role for Andre Villas-Boas' side.

The appearance was Dempsey's first of the EPL season, as he did not play for Fulham while his protracted transfer saga was resolved, finally ending with a last-minute transfer to north London on Aug. 31, the final day of the transfer window.

Jermain Defoe scored a brace in the match, while Gareth Bale also added a goal in Tottenham's first win of the season and first win under Villas-Boas. Hal Robson-Kanu scored a late consolation for the home side.

dJozy Altidore got back in the swing of club play quickly after the international break, scoring three times for AZ as the club ran out to a 4-0 win over Roda JC.

Altidore opened the scoring just 13 minutes in before Erik Falkenburg put the team up 2-0 just under half an hour into the game.

Altidore put the score out of reach just before halftime with his second of the day, giving his team a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the break. In the 65th the big American rounded out his day with a third and gave the game its final scoreline.

The big striker now has seven goals at this early stage of the season, putting him well on pace to top his career-best numbers from last season.
