Roy Keane poised to take over as manager of Turkish side Kasimpasa

    197227hp2.jpg

Roy Keane is set to be named as the new manager of Turkish Super Lig club Kasimpasa, according to the club's vice president.

The former Manchester United midfielder has been working as a pundit for ITV since he was sacked by Ipswich Town nearly two years ago.

Hasan Hilmi Oksuz told AA, "We reached an agreement with Keane. He will be in Istanbul tomorrow if nothing extraordinary happens. We will benefit from his experiences right into our vision. We believe he can lead this club to the glorious results."

Kasimpasa is in Turkey's top flight for just the eighth season in its 91-year history and currently sits second in the Super Lig table behind giant Galatasaray.

The Istanbul-based club sacked former manager Metin Diyadin, despite him leading them to promotion from the second tier last season and to the lofty position this term.

Evra: Manchester United deserved Tottenham defeat

    212432hp2.jpg

Patrice Evra insists that Manchester United deserved its 3-2 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday evening.

The win was Spurs' first at Old Trafford in 23 years and came after being 2-0 up at the break courtesy of goals from Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale. Evra bemoaned the Red Devils' performance in the opening 45 minutes.

"The result is what happens when you only play for 45 minutes," Evra told reporters. "The game is 90 minutes long, and we deserved to lose, because we only played for 45. To concede three goals at Old Trafford is not good enough."

United rallied in the second half, with Nani and Shinji Kagawa netting goals, but the Red Devils were left with too much to do as Clint Dempsey hit a third and Andre Villas-Boas' side claimed the points in a scintillating encounter.

"The problem is in our heads," Evra said. "It looked like we stayed in the hotel. The first 45 minutes had no speed, no focus, we didn't win a lot of challenges and we conceded some silly goals. Maybe I am hard with myself and the team but we only showed the United face in the second half. This is not enough if we want to win the title."

Redknapp: Signing of the summer Cazorla as good as Fabregas

    212934hp2.jpg

Harry Redknapp believes that Arsenal's capture of Santi Cazorla is the best signing in the Premier League this season, and that the Spain international can be as good as Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates Stadium.

The ex-Tottenham boss also revealed that he wanted to sign the 27-year-old playmaker when he was in charge at White Hart Lane, but he was unable to finalize a deal.

“Cazorla is a superb footballer, and I think Arsenal have got a real diamond,” Redknapp told The Sun. “However much they got for Cesc Fabregas, 40 million pounds or whatever it was, they have managed to replace him for less than half the money.

“I am a huge fan of Cesc, but I honestly don’t think there is anything between the two of them. They’re both top Spanish internationals — and Cazorla will be a truly great signing for the Gunners. Probably the best one any side made this summer, in my opinion.”

Cazorla was brought into the Emirates with Robin van Persie facing an exit. The Dutchman eventually moved to Manchester United, and Redknapp believes Van Persie could be a difference-maker in this season's title race.

“If you had to put your life on one man putting the ball in the net, you’d be hard-pressed to come up with someone better — and he will be worth another eight, nine or 10 points to United this season," Redknapp said. “In my book, that could be the difference between winning the title and not.”

The 65-year-old also hailed Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen, who arrived at White Hart Lane shortly after Redknapp's departure.

“He’s a hell of a player — one of the growing number of Belgians who are tearing up the Premier League,” Redknapp said. “One of the things which has really impressed me about Vertonghen is his mentality — he is such a strong character.

“He’s an established international and is already proving that he’ll have no trouble adapting to the English game. Even if he had cost 12 million pounds, he would be a real steal.”

Gerrard: Winning title with Liverpool 'will be a miracle'

    213232hp2.jpg

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted he needs a "miracle" to lead his side to a Premier League title before the end of his career.

The Reds finished second in 2008-09 with a points total of 86 that would have won the league in several other seasons, but they have never come as close in Gerrard's tenure as skipper.

With the Manchester clubs and Chelsea all strengthening in the summer, the 32-year-old realizes his hopes of bringing the title to Merseyside are unlikely to happen, especially with other up-and-coming rivals also hungry for success.

"It will be a miracle if I now realize my dream of winning the title with Liverpool," Gerrard said in his recently published autobiography My Liverpool Story. "I say that because of my age and where we finished in the league the past couple of years. And also the situation we're in with the rivalries.

"There's not just United and Arsenal now but City, Chelsea and Tottenham. Newcastle coming as well. The Premier League has become a lot more difficult to win for everyone."

Despite Liverpool's fine 5-2 win at Norwich on Saturday, the club's poor early-season form has already led to an 11-point gap between the Reds and league leaders Chelsea, which may prove to be too large a deficit for Brendan Rodgers' side to overcome.

Even so, Gerrard claims that, with improvements, the club will be capable of challenging for a UEFA Champions League qualifying position by the end of the season.

"We were eighth last year. If this season goes well, we get a bit of luck and improve, we have an outside, no, a 50-50 chance of being in the top four. That's being realistic. It's achievable," Gerrad said.

Sherwood: Blackburn links are just rumors

    214321hp2.jpg

Tottenham technical coordinator Tim Sherwood has dismissed reports that he is set to join Blackburn as manager following the departure of Steve Kean on Friday, insisting the stories are "just rumors."

The 43-year-old former Blackburn player has a proud history with Rovers, having captained them to the 1995 Premier League title, and he would surely command a high level of respect from the supporters after their concerted campaign to force previous boss Kean out of his role following the club's relegation to the League Championship.

Sherwood, though, has stated that he is happy at Spurs and looking forward to the future in London.

"I've got a great job where I am. There ain't nothing to consider. It's just speculation," he told reporters. "That's all they are - just rumors. That's all I know about it. I love what I do. I'm happy at the football club - it's a great project."

Sherwood has been a part of the back-room staff at Spurs since 2008, and he is heavily involved with the youth team. In addition to that, the current instability at Rovers would represent a potentially unstable introduction to club management.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas did not seem fully opposed to Sherwood potentially taking on the job if were he to make himself available for the position.

"I can't comment on the Blackburn situation, because I have Steve Kean as a friend and I respect him," the 34-year-old Portuguese said. "But if Tim is a candidate, he has to make a personal decision and speak to the club."

Terry treated miserably by courts and FA, blasts Eriksson

    196551hp2.jpg

Sven Goran Eriksson has leapt to the defense of Chelsea captain John Terry, suggesting both the FA and the civil courts have handled their respective cases against the former England international in a "miserable" way.

The 31-year-old defender was cleared of using racist language against Anton Ferdinand by Westminster Magistrates' Court in July this year, but the FA subsequently brought its own investigation and slapped him with a four-game ban and a 220,000-pound fine for using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behavior in reference to Anton Ferdinand.

Eriksson believes Terry should face punishment if he did express racist language, but he insisted the whole incident has been handled poorly

"It is obvious John should be punished if he’s expressed himself so inappropriately," Eriksson told reporters. "I refuse to believe [Terry] is a racist. What makes me upset is the FA punishment has come after a year. I honestly think the FA – and civil courts – have handled it in a miserable way."

Terry quit the England national team on Wednesday night before the FA concluded its case on Thursday, with Eriksson suggesting Terry did so to protest the possible guilty verdict.

Terry is still deciding whether to appeal the FA's verdict, and he will not be banned until either he accepts the decision or the 14-day appeal window expires.

Failing that, he could take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, although the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson have suggested that he is "lucky" to have escaped with a four-match ban, considering Luis Suarez received an eight-game ban last season for using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behavior towards Patrice Evra.

Vilanova hails Barcelona's fighting spirit after comeback victory over Sevilla

    207397hp2.jpg

Tito Vilanova has hailed Barcelona's resolve after the club overcame a two-goal deficit to beat Sevilla 3-2 at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday.

Piotr Trochowski and Alvaro Negredo put the home side ahead before a double from Cesc Fabregas and a stoppage-time winner from David Villa completed the turnaround. Vilanova insisted that the victory was deserved, and opined that the spirit shown by Barca to bounce back from the jaws of adversity is testament to their
    winning mentality.

"A draw would not have been the fairest result," Vilanova told club's official website. "[We] created enough chances to win the game. It would've been better to not suffer, but it's important to have the ability to sacrifice yourself in order to continue competing. That is what my team did throughout the match. A team that fights back proves that they want to keep on winning."

Vilanova also spoke about Alex Song's performance on the night, holding praise for the former Arsenal man as he continues his transition to his new side.

"We’ve asked a lot of him [Song] lately, because he was forced to play in a three-man defense," Vilanova said. "I think he had a great game."

Frank Isola: Thierry Henry is a true superstar

    211086hp2.jpg

It ended with one final moment of genius from Thierry Henry and with the crowd waving their arms as if to tell the Frenchman “we’re not worthy, we’re not worthy.”

This was the type of night MLS commissioner Don Garber dreamed about when Henry decided to trade fame and fortune in Barcelona for relative anonymity and fortune in Manhattan. Red Bull Arena was sold out on a mild September night in Harrison, NJ and Henry was at the top of his game. This is precisely what the league needed and exactly what Henry can do.

“Thierry,” said Red Bulls manager Hans Backe, “was phenomenal.”

Henry contributed to all four goals in New York’s 4-1 win over road-weary Toronto FC last Saturday. The final tally was three assists and one absolutely sublime goal in the stoppage time when he finessed a chip shot over Freddy Hall, Toronto’s helpless goalkeeper. Henry has now scored 14 goals in 21 starts and on this night he was simply playing at a different level.

Kenny Cooper scored two of the easiest goals you’ll ever see because of Henry’s brilliance. On two separate occasions, Henry out-foxed multiple defenders by playing perfect passes to Cooper, who was left unmarked 10 yards from goal.

While everyone was expecting Henry to shoot, he showed excellent vision and unselfishness by making the extra pass.
“If I see a guy in better position I’ll try to pass it,” said Henry, whose first assist came when Markus Holgersson headed home his corner kick. “It’s as simple as that.”

Henry can be the easiest and toughest superstar to play with. Easy because his play-making ability transcends the game and makes those around him better and more confident. Tough because he wears his emotions on his sleeve and has an annoying habit of raising his arms in frustration when his teammates don’t perform up to his standards.

There are times when Henry needs to be reminded that he’s no longer playing with the likes of Robin van Persie and Lionel Messi. A little patience every now and again wouldn't hurt. Henry’s frustration got the best of him in the closing minutes of a loss to Sporting KC on Sept. 19 when he head-butted an opposing player. Henry was suspended one game for his foolish and embarrassing outburst. That transgression was fresh in everyone’s mind when Henry took to the pitch on Saturday against Toronto FC, and Henry more than redeemed himself.

“When he shines like this, you could say he’s the best player in the league,” Backe added.

Even David Beckham and Landon Donovan realize that Henry is the premiere player in MLS, but Beckham and Donovan own the title that has eluded Henry and the Red Bulls. Ultimately, Henry will be judged on how many trophies he delivers to championship-starved New York. He’s won just about every medal available except for an MLS Cup.

The Red Bulls brought him here to accomplish just that. They brought him here for moments like last Saturday when Henry showed that even at 35 he’s still very much a world-class player. He’s a true superstar who needs to cap his career in the United States by doing exactly what Beckham did last season.

Karanka: Kaka has role to play at Real Madrid

    214105hp2.jpg

Aitor Karanka has insisted that Real Madrid wants to keep Kaka and plans to play him this season.

The Brazilian - who was handed a recall to the national side last week - was brought on for Mesut Ozil at halftime in Los Blancos’ 5-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

“The improvement of Kaka has been seen all over the world,” Karanka said to reporters after the match.“We were the first to tell him that he would have games here if he stayed with us at the close of the market. It is what we all want and what we had in previous years."

Jose Mourinho made four changes to the Madrid team which comfortably beat Rayo Vallecano last weekend and Karanka said the club's rotation policy will continue throughout the season.
“We want players who are 100 percent,” Karanka continued. “We do what we see as best for the team and I think that at that time the change was the best option.“We believe that [Sami] Khedira has excelled above all, he has had a great, multifunctional game and defended strongly. It was a great game for him.”

Karanka also revealed he has no concern about the prospect of playing Barcelona, which is currently eight points ahead of Madrid in the league, next weekend, after clashing with Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“This [league] gap is how it is for the points earned,” he added. “We are thinking only now towards Ajax [in midweek] and Barca [on Sunday].”

Ronaldo: Real Madrid cannot lose another match

    214955hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has stressed Real Madrid cannot lose another point this season on the back of the club’s 5-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

The 27-year-old scored a hat-trick - including two penalties - after Los Blancos’ went a goal behind in Sunday evening’s clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.Jose Mourinho’s men face Barcelona next Sunday and Ronaldo is pleased the side could record a victory in the lead-up to the big clash.

“We went a bit lethargic [early] in the game,” the former Manchester United man admitted to reporters after the match. “But after the Deportivo goal we woke up and we got a good comeback.

“Our team is good and we know we cannot lose more points. We have achieved an important victory [tonight].”On the topic of squad rotation, Ronaldo insists he is not bothered by Mourinho’s alterations because of the length of their campaign.

He said: “We have to accept the decisions of the coach because he knows to do best for the team. The season is very long and you have to make changes.”With a clash at Camp Nou next up, the Portugal international admitted it would be tough to get all three points but remains positive that Madrid can get something from the match.

“We know it will be very difficult and complicated,” Ronaldo continued. “We have to stay focused and confident that we will play a good game.”

Inter 2-1 Fiorentina: Milito and Cassano earn Nerazzurri first home win

    214950hp2.jpg

Inter ended its San Zero hoodoo by storming to a 2-1 home victory over Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina on Sunday thanks to goals from Diego Milito and Antonio Cassano, although the match should have finished a landslide victory to the home side, save for some profligate finishing.

Searching for the team's first win of the season in Milan, Andrea Stramaccioni sent out the same three-man back line that served himwell against Chievo earlier during the week. The Nerazzurri's formation mirrored the 3-5-2 sent out by the visiting team.

Philippe Coutinho, handed a rare start in place of regular playmaker Wesley Sneijder, appeared to particularly relish his chances early on, some promising play down the left with Yuto Nagatomo allowing the Brazilian to deliver Inter's first ball of the night into the Violabox, only for stopper Facundo Roncaglia proving equal to the task, solidly heading clear.

Cassano had been looking bright after making a summer switch over from cross-town rival AC Milan, this time bombing down the left flank to create an opening for Coutinho, although Gonzalo Rodriguez stood strong in the middle to intercept play. The 28-year-old signing from Villarreal was to go from hero to villain shortly after though, as a cross from compatriot Javier Zanetti came off the Argentine defenders arm, leaving referee Antonio Giannoccaro‎ with no hesitation in pointing to the spot.

Evergreen striker Milito stepped up to bury the ball into the bottom left corner of the net with aplomb, sparking wild celebrations from Zanetti and company in the 17th minute.

The goal visibly eased the home side's nerves, as Inter began looking increasingly likely to seize on mistakes conceded by Fiorentina's creaking defense every time the club lost the ball in the center. Viola talisman Stevan Jovetic kept opposing custodian Samir Handanovic on his toes with a free kick that came off the post in the 21st minute however.

Straightforward, one-way traffic was summarized as Milito conspired to miss not one, but two, easy chances to double his team's lead. The 33-year-old flicked a searching Cassano pass over the head of Roncaglia only to volley against the crossbar, then had the San Siro faithful gasping in disbelief as he fired straight at the imposing Viviano after being slipped through one-on-one by his strike partner.

Cassano ensured his teammates would not have to wait long though, as his 90th Serie A goal, and fourth in his five Nerazzurri appearances, sparked emphatic cheers from onlooking spectators. A beautifully executed dummy from midfield lynchpin Esteban Cambiasso allowed the ball to roll across to the Euro 2012 finalist, who made no mistake by wrong-footing Viviano from close range.

A consolatory header from Romulo in the 41st minute, finishing from David Pizzaro's cross, proved scant distraction from the fact the season's surprise package so far had been comprehensively outplayed, as Fiorentina headed down the tunnel with a temporary respite to whistle up a fightback. Montella subsequently introduced Matias Fernandez in place of the ineffective Adem Ljajic.

The substitution appeared to galvanize the visitors, as they controlled the opening minutes of the second period in vice-like manner. Only a silly second booking on the part of Rodriguez, and the customary sending-off, undid the visitors good work, as they contained their more illustrious counterparts in ways more effective than those seen earlier during the evening.

Milito missed another sitter after heading a cross straight at Viviano from six yards out, as Inter begin shoring up the lead with the introduction of workhorse Gaby Mudingayi. As Fiorentina begin running out of steam, in the acknowledgement that they were one man down, the match slowed to stolid, dour tactical proceedings, neither team opting to undertake risks of similar nature that so set the initial 45 minutes alight.

The credible victory for the San Siro outfit now lifts them to third, just four points behind front-runners Juventus and Napoli, while Fiorentina remain in a respectable eighth position.

Real Madrid 5-1 Deportivo: Ronaldo hat trick continues Los Blancos revival

    214938hp2.jpg

Real Madrid continued its La Liga resurgence after their early season struggles thanks to goals from Angel Di Maria, Pepe and a hat trick from Cristiano Ronaldo.

With one eye on the Champions League clash with Ajax in midweek, Jose Morinho made four changes to the side that claimed Los Blancos’ first away win of the season against Rayo Vallecano last week.

Sami Khedira returned to the midfield in place of Xabi Alonso and the German showed his early joy at a recall by out muscling his opponent in midfield to play in Cristiano Ronaldo for the first real chance of the game after 10 minutes.

Alvaro Arbeloa dropped to the bench as Sergio Ramos went to right back to make way for Raphael Varane, and the young Frenchman will be disappointed with how easily he allowed Riki to skip away and poke past Iker Casillas to give Depor a shock lead after 15 minutes.

However the home side was level less than 10 minutes later when Di Maria beat Manuel Pablo on the right before the veteran brought him down right on the edge of the box. Referee Miguel Angel Ayza Gamez deemed the incident to have taken place inside the area, and Ronaldo stepped up to calmly stroke home the equaliser.‎

36-year-old Pablo was made to endure a torrid time, with Di Maria and Ronaldo swapping flanks as Madrid repeatedly hit long diagonal passes in behind the former Spain international. It was a ball inside the fullback that saw Di Maria put the home side ahead.

With Mesut Ozil coming returning to the side for the injured Michael Essien, Luka Modric took up a deeper role than he did last week and the two combined before the Croatian played a perfectly weighted pass inside Pablo for Di Maria. The Argentinian saw his initial effort come back off the post, but followed up to head home from close range.

Ronaldo grabbed his second goal of the evening five minute later, heading into an empty net after Ramos saw his shot parried up into the air by Aranzubia.

Kaka also returned to the squad after netting a hat trick in a midweek friendly against Millonarios on Wednesday, and he replaced Ozil to make his first appearance league of the season at halftime after the German’s work rate was deemed unsatisfactory by Mourinho. It wasn’t a vintage performance from the Brazilian but the recall will no doubt be a confident boost for the 30-year-old who looked to be on his way out of Madrid, especially when coupled with his return to the international fold this past week.

Xabi Alonso, who was the only outfield player at Madrid to have played every minute of the season so far prior to this evening, replaced Modric on the hour mark, and less than 10 minutes later the Spain international’s free kick found Pepe unmarked to make it four.

Ronaldo completed his hat trick with eight minutes remaining, converting his second spot kick of the night after Kaka’s attempted cross had struck Evaldo’s hand inside the area.

Gary Neville dampens chances of an England recall for Rio Ferdinand

    214715hp2.jpg

Gary Neville has dampened Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand's chances of playing for England again.

The 37-year-old Neville, who is part of England manager Roy Hodgson's coaching team, has claimed that Ferdinand will probably never feature for the national team again unless he can definitely hold down a spot in the starting XI.

The central defender's form was put under scrutiny after the Red Devils' defeat to Tottenham over the weekend, and despite the absence of John Terry from the national team set-up, it is unlikely that Ferdinand will get the call.

Neville, while working as a pundit for Sky Sports, said, "Roy Hodgson has never said that Rio will no longer play for England. Rio Ferdinand has never said he won’t play for England again. But how many games has Rio Ferdinand played for Fabio Capello in the last 18 months? Three. He has not been playing regularly for England for the past two years. Roy Hodgson is looking to 2014, and I don’t see a big issue with this.

"He is a class defender, [but] Roy Hodgson has said many times that he won’t pick 34- or 35-year-olds with 70 or 80 caps just so they can sit in the stands. It will be divisive in the squad, divisive in the dressing room. If he gets picked, then it will be with him having to be one of the first names on the team sheet. He hasn't played regularly for the past 20 months, it’s not just a Roy Hodgson thing."

Hodgson will select his squad for England's World Cup Qualifiers against San Marino and Poland on Thursday.
