Poland 1-1 England: Rooney opener not enough as Three Lions wobble in Warsaw

England's World Cup 2014 qualifier away in Poland produced a less-than-ideal performance from the visiting side and finished as a 1-1 draw.

Wayne Rooney's scrappy goal from a first-half corner was canceled out by Kamil Glik's reply from a corner of the hosts' own in the second period, in a game rescheduled from Tuesday due to a waterlogged pitch.

Both sides lined up with the same teams that had been named the day before, with Roy Hodgson deploying Tom Cleverley in an unfamiliar starting role on the left of midfield in a 4-4-2 formation.

After a damp start to proceedings Poland might have had the lead in the ninth minute. Jakub Wawrzyniak's low cross into the area reached Kamil Grosicki but the midfielder's first-time effort on his left foot was scuffed.

England was struggling to keep the ball past the halfway line with some lazy passes. The team's greatest threat – such as it was – in the first half-hour came through James Milner, getting forward on the right a little more than usual and nearly picking out Jermain Defoe at the near post.

England took the lead, though, through Rooney. The striker made up for an off-color opening 30 minutes by nodding in a Steven Gerrard corner. It came off his shoulder as much as his head but was still a vital break for the under-par visiting side.

Poland kept coming, Grosicki picking up a brilliant flicked pass forward from the dangerous Robert Lewandowski and firing his snapshot just wide in the area, but England's advantage held to halftime.

Immediately after the break, Glen Johnson bailed Phil Jagielka out when the Everton man's disastrous touch in the area nearly let Lewandowski in. Moments later, Joe Hart had to leap in order to deny Ludovic Obraniak's long-range thumper. England was defending deep and somewhat desperately, Lukas Piszczek spearheading sustained attacks.

Defoe, isolated in the second half, was robbed by Glik at close range shortly after the hour before being replaced by Danny Welbeck. The substitute looked to have teed up Rooney for a second as he drew Przemyslaw Tyton out of position but the Manchester United man blasted over messily.

England were suitably punished as Poland earned a corner at the other end and Glik, let in by Hart's ill-advised coming-out for the ball, headed home.

With the disappointing Rooney replaced by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the home crowd sensed a winner and Glik came up to try for a second at another corner but headed over.

England remained on the back foot but had moments of threat at the other end, Milner flashing another cross across the face of goal upon which Welbeck nearly pounced and Oxlade-Chamberlain offering some much-needed pace.

To sneak all three points would have flattered Hodgson's men, however, and the end of the match did indeed come without a further breakthrough for either side.

Kompany: Belgium squad is like a family

Vincent Kompany is hopeful that Belgium can reach its first international tournament since 2002.

Marc Wilmots' side is currently tied at the top of Group A with Croatia, after Tuesday's 2-0 home victory over Scotland.

Speaking to FIFA.com, the Manchester City captain praised the mental spirit shown by the so-called 'golden generation' of Belgian players.

"I can tell you one thing, and this is the great thing about this team - no matter how many good players we've got, the team spirit is unbelievable," he enthused.

"We are like a family and every time we come here, we are not even thinking about who is going to play the game. It's all about whoever is on the pitch just giving everything."

The abundance of talent in the Red Devils' lineup was evident as Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard was forced to settle for a place on the bench against Scotland.

"We've got five or six players who can play around those positions, and there are none of them who you can fault for effort, quality and talent," he added.

"Eden had the perfect attitude, the perfect response, and it just shows why he is a big player. For us, it's great to have so much quality. If you are in the stand or on the bench, the mentality stays the same and the enthusiasm stays the same. It's really a joy to be with this national team."

However, Kompany knows more than most that you cannot rule out anything in football and after what was dubbed as a must-win match for Scotland, the 26-year-old believes Craig Levein's side are not out of the race for Brazil 2014 just yet.

"I wouldn't know my history too well if I thought Scotland were out of it. We [Manchester City] had six games to play and we were eight points down, and we won the league last year. I just hope we are not going to make any mistakes and give them the chance to get back in it," he warned.

Group A appears to be a head-to-head fight between Belgium and Croatia to determine who takes the automatic qualifying position and Kompany is eager to make sure that Belgium does not slip up as is has done in past campaigns.

"I guess it will look like that just now until the next game. If we don't win the next game, it's all back open again. We're not going to focus on that too much," the former Anderlecht man explained. "We've got two games against Macedonia and they are massive for us. Personally, I just hope that we don't give anybody the feeling that they can get back in it."

Brazil star Juninho could face ban after drug allegations

    218733hp2.jpg

Juninho Pernambucano, capped 47 times by Brazil, is the most high-profile name facing punishment this week for an alleged drugs offense.

The incident in question involved the player visiting his side's changing room prior to providing a sample to doctors. The World Anti-Doping Code demands that when a player is randomly selected for a drugs test they go directly to the collection room from the playing field.

Juninho of Vasco da Gama, Juan of Santos and Ricardo Berna of Fluminense are all alleged to have breached the rule, with the potential punishments ranging from a warning to a two-year suspension.

Vasco doctor Albino Pinto has defended Juninho, saying that players need to make time-saving arrangements after games to ensure their clubs are able to make their connecting flights home.

"It's normal [for a player] to pick up their bag [first] to get ahead in time to go," Pinto told Globo. "It was a younger doctor that day," added Pinto, who was present in Campinas for the game against Ponte Preta on September 23, when the incident involving the free-kick specialist took place.

"I found it strange because Juninho apologized and he said it was okay."

The 37-year-old will be judged on Friday along with goalkeeper Berna, while Juan will be the first to be tried as his case is on the agenda of a disciplinary committee due to meet this Thursday.

The players' clubs also face possible fines of up to 76,200 euros.

Ronaldo honored by UEFA after winning 100th Portugal cap

    219700hp2.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has been honored by UEFA after racking up 100 games for Portugal.

Prior to the 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland in the latest World Cup qualifier, the Portugal captain was awarded a special plaque and cap by UEFA officials.

In his 100 matches, Ronaldo has scored 37 times; his first goal coming in a 2-1 group stage defeat to Greece in Euro 2004.

At 27-years-old, Ronaldo became the third youngest player to achieve the landmark after Germany's Lukas Podolski and Estonia's Kristen Viikmäe.

The Real Madrid star issued a statement on his Facebook page, reflecting on his 100 matches.

"I remember it was on August 20 2003 against Kazakhstan that I first pulled on the Portuguese jersey in a senior international," he remembered. "It was one of the most memorable moments of my life and began a journey that I have been proud to make. I would like to thank everyone who helped me along the way to reaching this milestone. "As the teams were coming onto the pitch last night the Portuguese fans at the stadium unfurled a banner that read "100 games, the best player in the world".

Eleven more international goals will see Ronaldo surpass Pauleta as Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer and he needs 28 more caps to beat the appearance record set by Luis Figo.

Portugal is currently five points adrift of Group F leader Russia in the race for automatic qualification to World Cup 2014.

Martinez ready to answer Arsenal goalkeeping crisis

Argentine youngster Damian Martinez is hoping that he can solve Arsenal's goakeeping crisis after Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski both suffered fresh injury setbacks.

As Goal.com revealed on Wednesday, the Polish No.1 has been wearing a protective boot for around 10 days as he steps up his recovery from the ankle injury which has kept him out for month but he is still two to three weeks away from a return to training.

Fabianski, meanwhile, will be out for up to three months after he ruptured his ankle ligaments in training on Tuesday just weeks away from his first team comeback.

Arsene Wenger is likely to stick with 27-year-old Vito Mannone but Martinez is hoping that he can capitalize on his teammates' ill fortune.

"The English Premier League is the best in the world. I have adapted very well here and it truly is amazing," he told Goal.com. "The best thing is the high level of football, pitches here are perfect. It's unbelievable and I hope to stay in this league for as long as I can.

"[At Norwich City on Saturday] I think I'm going to be on the bench, but the possibility of playing from the start is always there. I'm prepared for that. I have shown that I can play at the top level even at my age. It is the manager's decision and I have to wait for that moment to come. Despite the fact that I've just turned 20, I think I'm progressing well and I'm taking solid steps forward. I hope to keep playing here."

Wenger is known for placing his trust in youth - indeed, he entrusted Szczesny with the number one position in his early 20s - and Martinez has nothing but admiration for the French manager.

"Wenger is a great manager, very professional and very demanding, but he also gives youngsters a lot of freedom. He treats every player the same. I have a lot of admiration for him as a manager and as a person," he continued.

"I have been working here for the last three years and I'm in a great mood. I play like I've always played, only here pitches are different and football is faster, but my job is the same and I have to defend my goal."

The highly rated Argentine goalkeeper proved a safe pair of hands between the posts for Neil Banfield's reserves last season, making 13 appearances for the second string to build on a solid debut campaign after his arrival from Independiente in August 2010.

Martinez was rewarded for his consistency with first team squad call ups against Shrewsbury and Leeds last season, although he did not feature in either match, and finally made his first team bow in the 6-1 demolition over Coventry City in the League Cup this campaign.

"That 6-1 win over Coventry was emotional, it was the perfect match for me to make my debut," he added. "The League Cup is important. Arsenal lost the final two seasons ago. In two weeks we have to play Reading in that competition.

"Leaving Independiente was tough, all my friends were there. I played four years there. It was difficult but I wanted to build my career in Europe at one of the best clubs in the world. Luckily for me, I didn't get it wrong. I'm seeing the results now and I want more. I left when I was very young, without having the chance to play for Independiente in the First Division, but before I retire, I'm going to return to the club that gave me everything."

Martinez was an ever-present in the youth setup at international level and was even been called up by former Argentina manager Sergio Batista to represent the senior squad, although he is yet to make his debut.

"Oscar Ustari got injured and they called me up as an emergency replacement," the youngster recalled. "The Premier League season was over and I was on vacation at home. They called me up to play against Poland and Nigeria. Everything happened very fast but it was beautiful too. Being considered to play for your country is always a great thing.

"I know, playing for Arsenal, I'm going to get more chances to play for Argentina. That's why I have to work hard here and one day, Alejandro Sabella will see me."

    Paraguayan linesman explains Messi photograph

    219776hp2.jpg

Paraguayan linesman Nicolas Yegros insists he does not understand the controversy surrounding him having a photograph taken with Lionel Messi.

The official was seen posing with the Barcelona star during the halftime break of Argentina's 2-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Chile.

Yergos was asked to explain his decision after the photo went viral, but remained confused by the surprise generated as a result of the exchange.

"I really don't know why it is being talked about so much," he told reporters. "The referees, we are a part of the footballing environment and I do not see why there is a problem.

"I also had a photo with Alexis Sanchez, who is also a Chilean international idol, Barcelona player and teammate of Messi."

The Ballon D'Or holder was once again among the goals as Argentina moved three points clear of Ecuador in the race for Brazil 2014.

Xabi Alonso laments defensive injuries at Real Madrid

    202217hp2.jpg

Xabi Alonso has been left to lament the international round of fixtures after leaving Real Madrid with a catalogue of injuries to its first-team squad.

Los Blancos have suffered heavy setbacks in the full back areas with Marcelo ruled out for up to three months, as well as Fabio Coentrao and Alvaro Arbeloa among the casualties. Sami Khedira and Gonzalo Higuain are also in need of treatment.

With the international break coming to a close, Alonso admitted the situation looks bleak with the Celta Vigo clash coming up this weekend.

"It is very bad. It is amazing that in just seven days three players have fallen," Alonso told reporters.

"But I am sure that [Mourinho] is already working on it, it’s not my job to speculate on [possible solutions]."

In addition, Spain's No. 14 went on to address why he felt a lack of control allowed Les Bleus to come back and score a very late equalizer on Tuesday night in World Cup qualifying in Madrid.

Alonso added: "I think last night saw a lack of control as a collective. The team broke down and a goal was our punishment."

When reporters asked why Alonso did not take the penalty, which teammate Cesc Fabregas ultimately missed, he said: "We do not have a designated penalty taker. There were several of us yesterday and Cesc was confident."

Liverpool striker Borini facing three months out after foot surgery

    213176hp2.jpg

Liverpool striker Fabio Borini is facing three months out of action following upcoming surgery on a fractured foot, the club has confirmed.

The former Roma striker had to be substituted at halftime after sustaining the injury during the Reds' recent 2-1 defeat to Manchester United and further aggravated the blow while on international duty with Italy.

And the club has now confirmed that the 21-year-old will go under the knife after being assessed at Melwood and is set to be absent for some time.

The blow leaves Liverpool with just one senior striker, Luis Suarez, available following its failure to capture Clint Dempsey from Fulham during the summer transfer window.

Youngsters Samed Yesil and Jerome Sinclair have both recently featured in the League Cup and could now be handed further opportunities.

Bale is good enough for Real Madrid, says former Spurs teammate Modric

    199179hp2.jpg

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has urged former Tottenham teammate Gareth Bale to join him at the Bernabeu, saying the Welsh winger is good enough to play for the Spanish champions.

The 23-year-old has been a revelation for Spurs since being converted from a full back to play further forward by Harry Redknapp, and Bale's eye-catching displays in Europe have attracted the attention of top clubs.

Now Croatian star Modric - whose side beat Bales' Wales 2-0 on Tuesday night - feels the speedy winger would be a fantastic signing for Jose Mourinho's team.

"I agree [Bale] should play for Real Madrid and I hope he'll come", he told BBC Radio Wales. "It would be amazing and I think he can [play for Real Madrid]. He's a good enough player."
Real currently trails bitter rival Barcelona by eight points in La Liga after a stuttering start, but the acquisition of Bale could drive the club on to a successful defense of its league title - although it is extremely unlikely Andre Villas-Boas will let his star leave in the January transfer window.

Bale led Wales to victory against Scotland on Friday night with a late penalty and a stunning solo strike, and after showing impressive form for Tottenham this year, the highlight being a powerful run and finish as Villas-Boas' side won 3-2 away to Manchester United in September, the Welsh winger is a wanted man.The winger won the PFA Players' Player of the Year award for his performances during the 2010-11 campaign, including a hat trick at the San Siro against Inter which won him widespread acclaim.

Spurs have a partnership scheme with Real which allows the two clubs to work together regarding players, coaching and commercial relationships, which could tip any future move in favor of the Madrid side.

Villas-Boas could recall Friedel against Chelsea

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas has hinted at the possibility of goalkeeper Brad Friedel starting against Chelsea this weekend.

The American shot stopper saw his record run of 310 consecutive Premier League appearances ended as summer signing Hugo Lloris was chosen to start against Aston Villa earlier this month.

However, Villas-Boas has suggested the 41-year-old could be handed a return to action when the Blues visit White Hart Lane on Saturday.

"They compete for a position," he told ESPN. "In the end, we have made Brad the No.1 for the beginning of the season and we still see Brad as No.1, a player who has been tremendous in goal for us. We respect that. Hugo has been tremendous for us in exactly the same manner. It is obviously a decision I have to take, which I will take [on Friday] and in the future.

"Certainly, Brad has been tremendous, we respect that, he is looking in form, as Hugo is. He has done brilliantly this week for France. So competition will continue between the two. The decision will be left before the game."

The Portuguese manager went on to admit that Friedel was bitterly disappointed to see his eight-year run of games ended.

"We spoke about it before," he said. "In the end, it was difficult for him, not because of the consecutive run - he was looking good. It was not on performance that we made the switch, that's for sure.

"We had the opportunity to give Hugo a consecutive run of four games - including the two national team games like it happened. We are extremely happy about the fact we did. It gave him the first impact of Premier League football. But, as a great professional, he has to move on from that."

Bonera: Pato return is a boost for us

    199272hp2.jpg

AC Milan center back Daniele Bonera expects the return of Pato to give his team an extra edge in attack while defensively he says improvements have been made over the international break.

The injury-plagued Pato has not seen a minute's action so far this term, as a result of an injury he picked up while representing Brazil at the London Olympics. However, he has since recovered and is expected to make his first appearance when Milan take on Lazio this Saturday, and Bonera believes the attacker rejoins the squad at just the right time.

"It is important that Pato now returns. He is a great player and will definitely be an extra weapon in our attack," he was quoted as saying by Sky Sport Italia.

Massimiliano Allegri's side has been disappointing in its Serie A campaign so far, managing just seven points from seven games. However, Bonera believes that the club has progressed.

"The team have improved a lot. We have had some good games but we've paid for some mistakes," he continued. "As for the Scudetto? Perhaps not, but the team is getting better and I believe this is clear to everybody."

One area where Milan has suffered this term has been from set pieces with every one of the team's goals conceded in Serie A having come from a set play.

"We have suffered in regard to man marking. We have not defended the area well from dead ball situations. We have studied where we have gone wrong in previous games over the international break and I believe we are now better prepared," he added.

Albiol: There is an objective behind recent Casillas criticisms

    201162hp2.jpg

Real Madrid's Raul Albiol claims that there is a campaign against Iker Casillas to prevent him from claiming this year's Ballon d'Or award.

The Spanish press has been particularly critical of their national team captain over apparent mistakes he has committed in recent games and Albiol believes that it is not being done without reason.

"When these types of criticisms are made, there is an objective. This campaign is to give those who choose the Ballon d'Or one less problem," the defender told EFE. "It is clear that to win the award as a goalkeeper is very difficult but, if anyone can do, it is Iker. Last year, he won trophies with Spain and with Real Madrid. He had a great season."

While Casillas has received criticism, other candidates for the award, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi have received praise. Albiol believes that all four players are worthy of winning and suggested one way of deciding who wins the accolade.

"The most just thing would be to give a Ballon d'Or to Cristiano, Messi, Iker and Iniesta too. There is only one, but many players would deserve it," he added.

Albiol recognized that it is harder for a goalkeeper to win the award, but insisted that this should not change anything if he deserves it.

"A keeper should have the same chance as an outfield player, and he has given a lot to Spanish football, the national team and Real Madrid," he continued. “He has been number one for many years and now everyone wants to destabilize him. Iker has long proven to be the number one and he still is. Some people want to remove him from this position. He is very calm. He’s young for a goalkeeper, despite the years and the titles that he already carries." Casillas has been criticized for the goals conceded in recent ties against Manchester City and Barcelona, particularly from set pieces. But Albiol dismissed it all as unwarranted.

"I imagine that when he goes home it affects him – that is normal," he said. "He is always demanding of himself, and gets angry. He wants to stop everything. There is a lot of talk in the last weeks that he could have done more or less with different goals. It is normal that they expect a lot from him, but we know he is safe between the posts."

Liverpool boss Rodgers not considering Carroll recall

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers claims that he has not considered recalling Andy Carroll from his loan spell with West Ham to alleviate the club's striking crisis.

Fabio Borini is set to be out for around three months following an operation on a fractured bone in his foot, meaning that Luis Suarez is the only senior front man on the Reds' books. But the Northern Irishman insists that he has not given thought to bringing Carroll back, despite Hammers co-owner David Gold admitting on Thursday that the 23-year-old could be recalled in January.

"It isn't something I have considered, to be honest," Rodgers told reporters. "Andy has obviously gone out to get games. We have people watching when he plays and they report back on how he is doing. But with Fabio's injury just coming up we will assess it from there."
The Reds boss went on to underline the importance of keeping Suarez fresh, despite the Uruguayan forward's desire to play every game.

"I've rested him a couple of times knowing the squad we have and the games we have, looking to prioritize, but, like most footballers, he wants to play every minute of every game," he explained. "It is something I need to assess. The most important thing is winning games - that is what we need to do and in order to do that as often as we can I need the best players on the field.

"Luis will absolutely love playing three times a week but I need to try to nurture him because there are still many games to play between now and January. And even in January if we bring someone in it may not be January 1, so that is something which, over time, I need to assess and we'll look to manage the squad."

The former Swansea City boss also refused to criticize his superiors over the failure to land striker Clint Dempsey in the summer transfer window, before expressing excitement over the young attacking options at his disposal.

Casillas: I'm surprised Barcelona would make those videos

    203660hp2.jpg

Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has revealed he is surprised to hear of the rumors that Barcelona has put together a video of teammate Pepe's bad tackles on its players.

The Portuguese star stoked accusations between the clubs recently when he criticized Blaugrana players by saying that they went down theatrically under challenges in the last Clasico and Casillas admitted he was shocked to hear of the news.

"I'm surprised that Barca would make those videos," Casillas was quoted as saying by Marca. "It's normal for them to make them to analyze an opponent, but I don't think this type of video is like Barca."

The 142-capped Spain international also discussed recent claims that his side is interested in signing Radamel Falcao, who plays for Los Blancos' city rival, Atletico Madrid.

"He's a great forward, but they're just rumors. He showed that at Porto and Atletico as well as now," he said. "It's just part of football. Falcao can't really help us this season.

"The ones I think about are [[Gonzalo] Higuain, [Karim] Benzema and [Alvaro] Morata. It's not up to me to decide which players Real Madrid should sign."

Lazio hit with UEFA fine for fans' racist conduct

    212065hp2.jpg

Lazio has been fined 40,000 euros after some of their fans were found to have been involved in racist chanting during the side's UEFA Europa League clash with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in September.

The punishment relates to abuse directed at two of Spurs' players on the night, Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon. The announcement, which was made on UEFA's website on Thursday, also stated that the Italian capital club has three days to lodge an appeal against the decision.

Both teams opened their group stage campaign in the match, which ultimately ended goalless, with both Clint Dempsey and Steven Caulker having goals disallowed. Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas spoke to reporters about the alleged chanting after the Group J tie.

"UEFA is very active on this kind of situation, and our overall objective is to kick racism out of football," Villas-Boas said.

Iniesta: We've never seen any Pepe video

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta has rejected the notion that his side put together a video of Real Madrid defender Pepe's bad challenges.

The Portuguese star has become infamous among Camp Nou fans due to a number of robust challenges during clashes between the two sides. However, Iniesta has denied any knowledge of a tape cataloging the player's fouls against his team.

"I want to be clear, we've never seen a video on a specific player, not of Pepe or any other colleague," the 28-year-old told reporters. "The most recent Clasicos are what Clasicos should always be like."

This echoed recent comments from Barca's Director of Institutional Relations, Pere Gratacos, who was quoted by Europa Press as saying: "relationships are very good [with Madrid,] without any problem."

Iniesta also spoke of his connections to Catalunya, after causing controversy in mid-week by claiming that he felt like a local, despite growing up in Albacete.

"It's logical that I feel Catalan, if you don't want to understand, you simply won't. I've been living here for 16 years," said the Spain international.

The Euro 2012 player of the tournament also talked about the Blaugrana's upcoming Copa del Rey clash with Alaves, as well as his willingness to fill in wherever necessary in the side.

"We have to [be] wary of Alaves. In theory we are the superior side, but we still have to play," he said. "It's no secret that my favorite position is in the midfield, but I'm at the team's service."

Southampton midfielder Gaston Ramirez ruled out for six weeks

Southampton's club-record signing Gaston Ramirez has been ruled out for up to six weeks with a thigh injury.

The Uruguay international, who arrived at St Mary's from Bologna for 12 million pounds in August, missed Southampton's 2-2 draw with Fulham on Oct. 7 after suffering a dead leg in training.

The 21-year-old has been ruled out of Southampton's trip to West Ham on Saturday by manager Nigel Adkins, who also confirmed the dead leg resulted in the swelling of the midfielder's thigh.

"I think six weeks is probably about right, but we'll see how he progresses through the rehab stages," Adkins told reporters. "If the time is from the medical department, it is from the date of original injury. He is showing good signs of recovery at this moment of time, but he won't be fit for the weekend."

Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has lavished praise on striker Radamel Falcao, believing his effort and commitment has helped him become the best No. 9 in the world.

The 26-year-old has scored eight goals in six league matches, allowing Los Colchoneros to share a spot with Barcelona at the top of La Liga table. The Colombian's eye-catching performances have captured the attention of some of the biggest clubs in Europe, leading to Simeone to laud the attacker for his efforts.

"Radamel has worked for this moment, everything that is happening is a consequence of what he gives to football," he told AS. "I hope he can continue along this line because his best virtue is his character and his desire. He is definitely the best No. 9 in the world."

Falcao has also been excelling for his country, netting both goals against Paraguay in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win on Friday. He could leave Atletico Madrid in January if the60 million euro buy-out clause in his contract is activated.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has been unveiled as the new vice-chairman of the Football Association.

The 55-year-old will replace Sir Dave Richards after the FA Board approved appointment of Gill, who was put forward for the role by the Professional Game Board. Gill, who has been on the FA Board for the past six years, joins Roger Burden as a second vice-chairman, and is relishing his new role at English football’s governing body.

“I’m delighted to have been appointed Vice-Chairman of The Football Association,” he said in a statement on the FA’s website. "The health and success of The Football Association is vital to the future of the game in England and I hope to justify the Board’s faith in me by helping to shape discussions and actions to deliver that.”

Gill has also been put forward to represent the FA in the UEFA Executive Committee, with elections taking place in May at the UEFA Congress in London.
