Spartak Moscow 2-1 Benfica: Jardel own goal puts Russians back into Group G contention

    221558hp2.jpg

Spartak Moscow kept their hope of qualifying for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League alive by deservedly edging out Benfica 2-1 in a Group G clash at the Luzhniki Stadium on Tuesday.

The hosts open the scoring with less than three minutes played, with Rafael Carioca finishing off a wonderful breakaway from deep inside their own half, but their Portuguese opponents leveled matters courtesy of a near-post header from Lima half an hour later.

Benfica's Jardel, under pressure from Ari, put the ball in the back of his own net shortly before halftime, and Spartak held on to its slender advantage in the face of incessant late pressure from Benfica to register the club's first points of the Champions League campaign.

Spartak, who had blown 2-1 leads in its opening two games against Barcelona and Celtic, made a storming start and could easily have been ahead inside a minute, with Ari picking out Diniyar Bilyaletdinov unmarked in the area only for Artur to parry the former Everton man’s towering header away to safety.

Still, the home fans did not have to wait much longer to see their side go ahead. Bilyaletdinov pounced on a loose pass from Nemanja Matic in Spartak territory and surged forward before moving the ball onto Jurado. The on-loan Schalke attacker held it up superbly, waiting until the last possible second before slipping the supporting Rafael Carioca in on goal. The Brazilian demonstrated just as much poise and composure in drawing out Artur before coolly prodding the ball past his compatriot.

It should have been 2-0 not even 20 minutes later, but Ari volleyed against the bar after being picked out at the back post by a terrific cross from Jano Ananidze. Almost inevitably, the striker’s profligacy was punished almost immediately, as Lima headed home an equally inviting delivery, this time from Salvio from wide on the right after Spartak had failed to fully clear a Benfica corner.

The momentum appeared now very much with the visitors but, credit to Spartak, the hosts reclaimed the lead when Jardel bundled a dangerous cross from Evgeni Makeev into his own net, after the latter had been released into space by a defense-splitting pass from his captain, Dmitri Kombarov.

Despite dominating territory and possession in the final quarter, winless Benfica would not go so close again to snatching a point, meaning the Portuguese side drops to the bottom of the group and must now triumph in its return clash with Spartak in Lisbon to retain any realistic chance of reaching the last 16.

    Besiktas denies scandalous Quaresma allegations

    214323hp2.jpg

Besiktas vice president Tamer Kiran has moved to deny claims that were made against winger Ricardo Quaresma by board member Ahmet Nur Cebi.

The Portugal international was reported to have showed his genitals to a female employee of the club and urinated on the club's kitman, leading to a disagreement with the club regarding wages, but Kiran has explained that these revelations have been blown out of proportion and are untrue.

"We have a contract with Quaresma and we should protect him," he told the club's website. "Some television channels have tried to turn the rumor mill and benefit from the situation between the club and Quaresma."

The 29-year-old had been in contract negotiations with the club throughout the summer, and media reports have suggested that there have been a number of disagreements between the two. Kiran, though, explained that Nur Cebi only told reporters that these incidents had taken place to stop them from asking questions.

"They asked some horrific questions to our vice-president Ahmet Nur Cebi. He couldn't refuse them and gave those answers just to get rid of them," Kiran said. "These reports saddened our board and Quaresma. This club will protect it's values."

Everton youngster Barkley extends Sheffield Wednesday loan by extra month

    112612hp2.jpg

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has extended his loan at Sheffield Wednesdayby a month after a string of impressive performances for the League Championship side.

The 18-year-old Barkley joined the Hillsborough outfit in September in a bid to gain greater first-team exposure and has since made seven appearances, scoring in a 2-1 defeat to Bolton.

"Ross has got better and better since he came here," Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones told the club's official website. "The lad has a very bright future and playing games in the Championship will certainly help his development."

Barkley, an England U-21 youth international, will stay at Hillsborough on a week-to-week basis that is authorized under a youth loan arrangement to boost Wednesday in its bid to avoid relegation. Jones' men are currently in the drop zone, sitting 22nd of 24 teams in the Championship.

Platini: UEFA is doing everything in its power to eradicate racism from the sport

    156586hp2.jpg

Michel Platini has backed UEFA to continue its fight against racism after disciplinary proceedings were opened against the Serbian FA following the reports of abusive shouts aimed towards England's Under-21 players in Krusevac.

The president of the European governing body has backed the organization's disciplinary committee to investigate the matter thoroughly and hand out the necessary punishment to anyone charged with racial abuse.

"Concerning the U-21 game between Serbia and England, we will receive the report from the delegates, the report from the officials and from the people who were there," Platini said at a press conference. "We have television images. The disciplinary committee will deal with it."

Platini also revealed that he received a letter from British Sports Minister Hugh Robertson asking for tough sanctions against the Serbian FA.

"The Sports Minister asked me to do something," Platini said. "I answered him as I've just said, which is that we are fighting racism. We are doing a lot of things. The disciplinary committee will decide."

UEFA has been criticized in recent years for not punishing those who have been found guilty of racism with big enough sanctions, but the former France international believes that the organization is doing all it can to combat the issue.

"We have a lot of associations that we finance and that we help to fight racism. It's not an easy issue, but we are doing everything in our power to eradicate racism in our stadiums," Platini said. "We often have important cases in quite a few countries. We try and fight against that. It's a real fight that we've been leading for many years."

Platini did explain that UEFA has watched some countries more closely than others, and that Serbia's history with racism could count against the nation in the current investigation.

"More than a year ago we gave a serious yellow card to Croatia and to Serbia, and we will see what the disciplinary committee decides," Platini said. "But it's true that it's a problem that concerns us enormously. It's difficult to remove all of that from the stadiums. It's not easy, but we're doing what we can."

Allegri: Malaga match won't be my last

    214674hp2.jpg

AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has vowed that Wednesday's CUEFA hampions League match against Malaga will not be his final one in charge of the Rossoneri.

The 45-year-old has been coming under increasing pressure after his side's poor start to the season, with recent defeats to rivals Inter and Lazio seeing the traditional power drop to 15th in the Serie A table, but he revealed he knows his position at San Siro is still secure.

"Will this be my final match with Milan? I do not think so," Allegri told reporters at a press conference. "[Silvio] Berlusconi has not called me since last week, but my situation is very clear. I talk with [Adriano] Galliani everyday.

"All I know is that we lack the points we deserved. We must acknowledge the league position is bad, but I'm very sure that the team will get out of this situation."

Despite backing himself to turn things around, the former Cagliari coach admitted his team must not dwell on the situation and try to move back toward the top of the table.

"We have to remain calm," Allegri said. "Thinking about it too much makes us crazy. We need to think less and act more. It is years since Milan were so low in the table and it's a bad thing."

The San Siro outfit goes into its Group C match in Spain in second place in the group, two points behind Malaga, and Allegri admitted some key players will be missing while he still has some decisions to make regarding who will make the starting XI.

"[Christian] Abbiati has still a respiratory infection, [Ignazio] Abate is still not fit and has remained in Milan for special training. [Nigel] de Jong, instead, has a problem with his hip," Allegri said. "I still have to choose who to put behind the striker. [Kevin-Prince] Boateng is not in great form. For him it's a moment when things don't come easily. We should not think at what happened in the past two years, when we had players with certain characteristics."

Ajax boss De Boer criticizes Manchester City's philosophy - 'Buying players is a lot easier'

    215365hp2.jpg

Ajax manager Frank de Boer has hit out at Manchester City's transfer policy, preferring his club's style and philosophy because "buying players is a lot easier."

The two sides face off in the Champions League on Wednesday night and the Dutch coach, while praising the talent at Roberto Mancini's disposal, insists that his approach is preferable.
"City is a club who spend a lot of money," De Boer told reporters. "We don't have that kind of money so we have to be creative.

He added, "I like our style better because buying players is a lot easier. Their attack is worth more than our entire budget. I thought their attackers cost 142 million euros or something."

"It doesn't matter who plays at City because all the players have a lot of quality.
De Boer explained why City's attack is so dangerous, claim it is a versatile offense.
"There is a difference in their players because [Edin] Dzeko and [Mario] Balotelli are more target men, [Sergio] Aguero plays around the striker's position," De Boer said.
“[Carlos] Tevez works really hard for the team. He's always busy and running around, so that's hard to defend."

Both teams are in desperate need for three points from the Amsterdam ArenA clash, with Ajax losing both of their opening group games and City boasting just one point after a last-gasp equalizer against Borussia Dortmund on matchday two.

And De Boer is backing his side to pick up a good result against City, declaring: "I think we can manage to get a result if we have the good form.

"Against Real Madrid we didn't play well but against Dortmund it was good. We really need a good result or else it's as good as over for us in Europe."

Nike wins lawsuit against Real Madrid's Ozil

    190090hp2.jpg

Real Madrid man Mesut Ozil faces a 150,000 euro daily fine if he continues to wear Adidas branded boots on the pitch, a Dutch court ruled on Tuesday, as it interferes with fine print in his last contract with Nike.

The attacking midfielder has been spotted multiple times this season wearing Adidas football boots, but without the iconic three stripes on the side.

Although Ozil is no longer being endorsed by Nike, the company has the right to equal any offer made by potential rival sponsors before the Germany international can legally switch brands.

According to the 24-year-old and his representatives, no contract has been agreed with Adidas. However, the court in Amsterdam has questioned Ozil's motives to start wearing Adidas, finding it unlikely that he would switch boot brands without another deal already being in place.

The court has ruled in favor of Nike and decided that the Los Blancos star must outline any offer presented to him, which would allow Nike to come back with a new offer in return. Failure to do so would result in the daily fine.

Hamsik: Juventus defeat will spur Napoli on

    217084hp2.jpg

Napoli forward Marek Hamsik believes that the Azzurri's defeat to Juventus in the top-of-the-table-clash on Saturday will inspire the team to perform better for the remainder of the season.

The Slovakia international admitted he felt the Serie A leader was slightly fortunate to run out a 2-0 winner in Turin and that a defensive error for Martin Caceres' goal cost the team at least a point.

"Juve had a lot of the ball but never looked dangerous," he told Tuttosport. "Unfortunately we left Caceres alone at the corner, and we were punished."

Walter Mazzari's team remains second in the table despite the loss, and Hamsik feels that the team must take the disappointment out on its next opponent after failing to take the chance to move to the summit of the league.

"This defeat will give us the right sort of anger for the next games. We start next weekend against Chievo, and that will be important," he said. "We then go to Bergame [to play Atalanta] and that will also be tricky.
    “We have to work hard.”

Soldado: Valencia has great respect for BATE Borisov

    174083hp2.jpg

Valencia's Roberto Soldado has revealed that the Spaniards will not be taking BATE Borisov lightly when they face off in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Mauricio Pellegrino's team is currently second in Group F with three points from its opening two games, and Soldado believes Los Che must respect their less glamorous opponents after the Belarusian outfit beat group favorites Bayern Munich in their last outing to sit top of the table.

"We have great respect for BATE. They are a team that knows exactly what tactics work well for them, as we saw against Bayern," he explained to Marca.

"We want the three points and to match them in the group so that we gave ourselves more opportunities to qualify for the next round.

"The win over Lille gave us life in the competition. Beating BATE would be a big step towards qualification."

Some have asked whether the 2001 Champions League finalists will be ready for the match in Eastern Europe after it scored two late goals to beat Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, but Soldado believes that result will be a boost ahead of Tuesday's encounter.

"Morale is high in the squad after the Athletic Bilbao match, especially because we had to work tirelessly the whole 90 minutes," Soldado explained.

"The players never gave up and worked as a team. This meant that we won the match and we must carry that attitude into the next game."

Asprilla: Falcao will never win Ballon d'Or at Atletico Madrid

    214064hp2.jpg

Former Colombia star Faustino Asprilla believes that Radamel Falcao will have to leave Atletico Madrid if he wants to win the Fifa Ballon d'Or at some point in his career.

Asprilla is of the opinion that only players from "big clubs" have a chance to win the prestigious individual award, and feels Atletico could face a tough task to hold on to Falcao.

"Winning the Ballon d'Or with Atletico Madrid is impossible. Only players from big clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan and Juventus win," Asprilla told Cadena SER.

Asprilla explained that with Falcao's quality, he needs to be playing in the Champions League to earn respect.

"Falcao was born to score; he's a great finisher, the best around at the moment, like Alan Shearer used to be in my days," he said.

He added, "Radamel is a player that should be playing in the Champions League so Atletico Madrid are going to have big problems hanging on to him. He'll have to go to another club to break records."

Falcao has so far netted nine goals in seven Liga appearances this term.

Ribery: I was too small for Lille

    221155hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has revealed that Lille felt he was too small to make it as a professional footballer, ahead of the Champions League meeting between the two sides.

The France international trained with the northern club as a teenager but was released before signing with Boulogne, and he has admitted that the coaches wanted to get him off the books even before a serious injury eventually brought an end to his time with les Dogues.

"I am very happy to return to Lille and the smell of the north," he told reporters at a press conference. "There was only one problem. I had broken my elbow and that is why I was released. But before that, they wanted to release me because I was too small."

He added, "I was good on the ball but too small for them. I am someone who never gives up on anything. I am very happy to have succeeded through other paths."

Bayern goes into the Group F encounter on the back of a surprise 3-1 defeat to BATE Borisov in its last European outing, and the 29-year-old has admitted that Tuesday's match is crucial.

"It is very important to get a result here against Lille," he explained. "It is well known that they want to play a very good match and win against us.

"There is a little more pressure with only three points after two matches. If we ever have a bad result, it is not good for us."

The former Olympique de Marseille man did praise his opponents, though he admitted that he has no problems about having not made the grade with them as a youngster.

"No, it's not a regret. I'm still at one of the biggest clubs in the world," he stated.

"I am very happy to see how Lille has grown. They have very good players, although many have now gone abroad. I am very happy for the fans."

Heynckes: Bayern always gets good results against big teams

    215627hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes is brimming with confidence ahead of Tuesday's Champions League match away against Lille, and has little doubt the Bavarians have what it takes to get a good result.

The Bundesliga giant cannot afford to spill points versus the French side after losing its previous Group F match against BATE, but the veteran trainer is confident his side will once again perform on the big stage.

"The Champions League is the most prestigious competition in football and we are going to give everything for a victory," he stated at a press conference. "When I look at our statistics I can see that we play well when we need to, and we win and get good results when we have to, even against big teams like Villarreal, Manchester City or Real Madrid."

Heynckes then went on to stress that Lille will not be a pushover in Tuesday's Champions League encounter.

"Our scouts went to watch LOSC's weekend game against Bordeaux, and I saw it on television. They are one of the best teams in France, regardless of the league table," he said. "They are well organized and have a good structure. We are going to give everything we have and I am happy to have a number of experienced players."

Bayern has collected three points from two games, but Rudi Garcia's side has lost both of its European encounters this season.

Carroll: Liverpool never gave me a fair chance

    215276hp2.jpg

Andy Carroll has aired his dissatisfaction with the way he feels he has been treated by Liverpool, revealing that his dearth of prospects at the club prompted him to accept a loan move to Premier League rival West Ham.

As things stand, Carroll remains a Liverpool player, but the 23-year-old disclosed how West Ham manager Sam Allardyce offered him the regular first team football that was not on the cards for him at Anfield.

"I haven’t really had a fair chance at Liverpool," Carroll told ESPN. "I was really told that I should move on to keep playing regular football, and obviously then Sam wanted me here and told me I would be playing regular games. So, for me it was a no-brainer coming here and to play.

"Obviously, I didn’t really get a chance there."

Despite holding the title of Liverpool’s record signing at 35 million pounds, the former Newcastle icon was never able to hold down a regular starting spot on Merseyside, a situation that was exacerbated by the arrival of Brendan Rodgers in the summer.

"A new manager came in and I wasn’t part of his plans," Carroll claimed. "For me to play football, that was my chance to do that. That is why I am here at Upton Park.

"I think I could fit into every system. I believe in what I can do. Obviously [Rodgers] has his beliefs and he didn’t think that. But for me, obviously, it was better to move on instead of waiting for my chance - which he told me might not come."

Carroll also spoke of his happiness at scoring for Roy Hodgson’s England at Euro 2012, and of his determination to use his chance at Upton Park to prove himself as a striker of international pedigree.

"The work I put in over the season, I deserved that goal," he said. "I kept my head a lot when I could have lost it at Liverpool. I got my chance at the Euros and I took it. Coming here, I have got a great chance to start games and score goals, which I haven’t really had many of last season.

"I don’t think I have got a point to prove, that is the wrong way to put it. I know what I can do and the ability I have got. I know what I am capable of. If other people don’t believe it, that is fine. I just get on with it. But at the end of the day, I know what I can do."

    Robben: I considered retiring

    221425hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich attacker Arjen Robben has admitted that he has had moments where he considered hanging up his boots due to his ongoing injury problems.

The Netherlands international has endured a number of serious injuries throughout his career, and the 28-year-old seriously thought about quitting the game just to put his physical issues behind him.

"I have had so many injuries throughout my career. It occasionally makes me a bit sad," Robben was quoted as saying by NOS.

"To be honest, I have thought about hanging up my boots more than once. It's a rather rigorous thought, but it's a consideration I've had, and not only at this point."

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal recently stressed that Robben is a regular for Oranje if he is fit, and the Bayern star is pleased with the faith shown in him.

"That really was a boost for me. Those are the kind of things that really help you when you're going through a difficult period.

"I personally thanked the coach for the faith shown in me. It feels really well."

Robben has made six official appearances for Bayern this term, but is yet to find the net.

Ferguson: Rafael is maturing into a great player

    192434hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has showered praise on his Brazilian youngster Rafael da Silva, after a string of strong performances at the start of this Premier League season.

Currently without Phil Jones and Chris Smalling due to injury, and with twin brother Fabio sent out on loan at QPR, Rafael is the only right-sided fullback available to United at the moment and has staked his claim for a first-team place with a level of consistency which had been lacking in previous seasons.

"He is maturing and learning all the time," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "Rafael has all the ingredients of a great player. He is blessed with great enthusiasm, skill and speed. He was quite impulsive and tended to over-commit himself. We have gone over it a few times but, bit by bit, it is all coming together and he was easily our best player Saturday."

Rafael himself also revealed that his maturity has improved greatly from last season - a time in which he was at fault for sloppy goals conceded against Everton and Athletic Bilbao, as United finished the season without any silverware.

"I do think they look at me differently now," Rafael said. "The way I play for United has changed a little bit and I have scored some goals as well. But mature is the word. I always want the ball. Now I read the game more and know what the opposing player is going to do."

The 22 year-old also emphasized the importance of playing for his country, and the wave of excitement and expectation that has swept over Brazil.

"It is a big time for me. The World Cup is the big competition for Brazil and all the fans expect us to win. I am really looking forward to being there," Rafael said.

Fabregas happy with position in the center of the Barcelona team

    220685hp2.jpg

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has stated that he is happier playing in a more central role for his club.

Blaugrana coach Tito Vilanova trusted the 25-year-old with a pivotal position in the middle of the pitch against Deportivo on Saturday, which the Catalan giant won 5-4 following an eventful match, and the former Arsenal man was happy with how he fit into the Barca team.

"I felt at home in the position I was playing in, I had more space, I had more of the ball and more passes reached me," he told reporters.

Vilanova now faces the dilemma of who to play in central midfield for the club's next match, whether to stick with Fabregas or bring back playmaker Xavi.

Barcelona is currently preparing for its Champions League fixture against Celtic, which takes place at Camp Nou on Tuesday.
