Barcelona 3-1 Zaragoza: Magical Messi maintains Blaugrana's brilliant start

    229597hp2.jpg

Barcelona's incredible start to the Liga season continued with a 3-1 victory over Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou on Saturday night.

With Lionel Messi in deadly form once again, the Blaugrana made it 11 wins out of 12 in the new campaign with a professional and clinical performance in front of their home fans.

Messi opened the scoring 15 minutes into the game with a delightful move and finish, but Montanes pounced on a momentary defensive lapse to steer Zaragoza level 24 minutes in.

But four minutes later, Messi was at it again, this time teeing up Alex Song to score his first ever Barca goal since his summer move from Arsenal.

Messi added another brilliant effort on the hour mark to put the result beyond any doubt, and rack up his 50th goal in the 33 league games he has played in the calender year 2012, while putting the Blaugrana six points ahead of nearest challenger Atletico Madrid.

Carles Puyol returned from injury to begin the match alongside Gerard Pique in the home side's defense, which was further changed by the inclusion of Martin Montoya instead of Dani Alves at right-back.

Barca needed only two minutes to carve out its first opening, when Jordi Alba delivered a low cross to the boot of Messi after a surging run down the left, but the Argentine drilled his first time effort wide of the post.

But on the quarter-hour mark, the pair would combine again to devastating effect. From out wide, Alba played Messi infield, whose first touch took Alvaro Gonzalez out of the equation, and allowed him the time and space to slot into the corner.

Zaragoza, to its credit, did not allow its head to drop after conceding, and forced Barcelona into a bit of defending by winning a succession of corners.

And on one such set piece 24 minutes in, a slightly weak clearance from Martin Montoya was pounced on by Montanes, who drilled past Victor Valdes from the edge of the box via a slight nick off Puyol.

But four minutes later, Barcelona was back in front. Messi was the provider this time, jinking past two defenders on the left before showing great awareness to cut back to the unmarked Song to sidefoot home from 12 yards out.

Andres Iniesta nearly added a third moments later when he slipped past the defensive line on a threaded pass by Messi, but with the angle diminishing by the second, he could only hit the side netting.

With one hour gone, Barca turned up the tempo just long enough to put the game out of reach of the visitors.

Messi started the move by releasing the unmarked Montoya down the right, and the full back returned the ball to the Argentine at the top of the box, who then curled a delightful effort into the far side of the goal.

Zaragoza was utterly floored by the setback, and Barca was able to kill the game off with long spells of leisurely possession in the opposition half, forcing the already tired visitors into even more hard work off the ball.

Barca was able to close out a professional performance with a deserved victory, while Messi moves ever closer to Gerd Muller's 85 goal record.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Cristiano Ronaldo is unbelievable but unbuyable

    223901hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says that although he would like Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the club, the Real Madrid winger is now "unbuyable".

The Portugal captain's disquiet at the Santiago Bernabeu was well-broadcast earlier in the season and he has recently declared his admiration for his former coach.

Ronaldo moved from the Manchester side to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 for 94 million euros, and has since scored an incredible 165 goals in 162 games for los Blancos.

Ferguson acknowledges that a return would be ideal but, given the amount of money involved, remains highly unlikely.

"I'd like to think it would be [possible], but I don't think it will be. You're talking about incredible amounts of money now," he told reporters. "What would you think his value would be? He's definitely unbuyable. Who could afford to buy him?"

He added: "He was definitely good value for Madrid, but he always wanted to play for them. It was his boyhood dream. I’m not saying he'll stay there forever, you never know ... How do you know we've not got a buy-back clause for him?"

The Red Devils boss proceeded to express his appreciation of his former protege, comparing him with the very best that United have had.

"He's an unbelievable player - one of the best. We have a pantheon of great players and Ronaldo definitely compares with any of them," he continued. "Although he had a natural talent, he is in many ways manufactured himself. He practiced and practiced. He had a bit of the Eric Cantona about him in that way. Paul Scholes is still the same."

'Messi does not win games on his own' - Vilanova praises Barcelona team effort in Zaragoza victory

    229571hp2.jpg

Tito Vilanova has lauded the collective efforts of his Barcelona players in Saturday's 3-1 Liga win over Zaragoza, insisting that they are not over-reliant on Lionel Messi, despite the forward's two goals.

The Catalans again had the Argentine to thank following his pair of strikes at Camp Nou, although Alex Song also got his name on the scoresheet shortly after Montanes' equalizer.

Nonetheless, the coach was quick to highlight the efficiency of his team's performance on the night in light of the recent midweek internationals, in which many of his squad members were involved.

"They've worked hard today, I acknowledge the strains of midweek internationals," Vilanova said at a press conference after the match. "Leo was decisive and great teams have great players, but he does not win games on his own."

The result leaves Barcelona eight points clear at the top of the Primera Division.

Lloris: Adebayor red card made Tottenham explode at Arsenal

    224213hp2.jpg

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris believes that Emmanuel Adebayor's sending-off against Arsenal was the difference between the sides after a 5-2 defeat at the Emirates.

The Togo striker opened the scoring in the 10th minute but was given a straight red just seven minutes later for a lunge at Santi Cazorla.

Despite conceding five times, Lloris was happy to get an outing for Spurs, just his second in the league since moving to the club in August.

"It was difficult. With the red card, we exploded in mid air," Lloris told Canal+. "It is never easy to concede five, but it sure feels good to be on that pitch."

Lloris, who admitted earlier in the week that it is difficult to accept being second choice at White Hart Lane, was diplomatic about his chances of playing in future.

"Will I play in the next few matches? It is the manager you need to ask that question to," he continued. "I always give my best in training."

Cabaye could be out until January, admits Newcastle boss Pardew

    175392hp2.jpg

Yohan Cabaye’s groin problem may keep him out until January, Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has revealed, as he struggles to cope with a plethora of players absent due to injuries and suspensions.

The Magpies will be without Ryan Taylor and Haris Vuckic for the remainder of the campaign and are currently missing a whole host of midfielders. Jonas Gutierrez, Dan Gosling and James Perch are all currently on the treatment table after a series of injuries, and heavy suspensions for key men Fabricio Coloccini and Cheikh Tiote have left the Toon Army crippled in the middle of the park.

These absentees have affected results, too, as Newcastle is without a win from its four games in November, with back-to-back home defeats to West Ham and Swansea epitomizing the club's woes.

"It could be we run all the way to the end of January before I have my first team to pick from," Pardew told The Shields Gazette. "When Cabaye comes back, Cheick will be gone. It is tough for us at the minute."

Pardew also confirmed Cabaye could require surgery, raising the possibility that his midfield orchestrator may miss the rest of the year.

"Cabaye might possibly have to have a little surgery on that groin. You have seasons when you lose players, and you have to be able to cope with it," Pardew added. "If I had everybody available, then losing Cabaye would not be such a blow. At the minute we cannot afford to lose anybody."

A former midfielder himself, Pardew feels fortune has not favored his team this season, and says he needs his best players back in his "stretched" side as soon as possible.

"We have been unlucky this year," Pardew continued. "We have lost Ryan Taylor and Haris Vuckic for more or less the season. One is bad and to lose two is tough to take and we have had suspensions. I can only think of one occasion when I have had everyone to pick and that was at Sunderland when I had all my senior players. I know that is what we need to do. We need our best players back. We are stretched this week and we have two big games and really that squad is only going to be added to by Jonas Gutierrez."

Rooney, Van Persie and Ferdinand among big names rested for Manchester United against Galatasaray

    227381hp2.jpg

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has opted to rest Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Rio Ferdinand for the Red Devils' Champions League trip to Galatasaray.

United has already secured its place in the knockout phase of the competition, as a 3-1 win in Braga almost a fortnight ago made it four wins out of four so far.

With his side looking to maintain its place at the top of the Premier League table, Ferguson has opted to rest a number of senior names - including Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Antonio Valencia and David De Gea - in favour of some of the club's younger players.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and defender Tom Thorpe are both yet to make a senior appearance for the Old Trafford outfit, have featured at Under-21 level for the club and are capped at England Under-19 level.

Canada to face Denmark in January friendly

    230575hp2.jpg

In its first action since being eliminated from World Cup qualification, the Canadian men's national team will face Denmark in an exhibition match in Arizona.

The game will take place on Jan. 27 at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson, and will be the first meeting between the two sides since 1995. The Danes are currently second from the bottom in Group B of UEFA's World Cup qualifying tournament, and the match will serve as part of Denmark's preparation for when that competition resumes next March.

With Brazil 2014 no longer in the picture, Canada is looking ahead to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and the friendly against Denmark will be the first step towards that tournament. The Canadian Soccer Association has yet to name a head coach to replace the departed Stephen Hart, and there has been no timeline set for such an announcement.

Tim Cahill keen on Everton loan return

    225648hp2.jpg

New York Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill has expressed his desire to return to Everton on loan in the January transfer window.

MLS players have often used the North American close season to join European clubs on loan in recent years, with LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan enjoying two spells at Goodison Park.

Cahill has pitched the idea of making a short-term comeback at the club with which he spent eight years in the Premier League.

"I know I have a lot more to offer," Cahill said in an interview with Sky Sports. "The main thing is that I get to enjoy MLS but I also get the chance of joining back up in the Premier League and playing in the best league in the world.

"There is no shadow of a doubt, I am eager to come back. Hopefully something can be done [with Everton]. It would be nice but it is not down to me. I have to respect that sometimes the ship has sailed."

Cahill was delighted to see the Toffees emerge once more as a contender for Champions League qualification, with David Moyes' team currently sitting fifth in the table.

The Australian admitted that the match he most missed taking part in is the Merseyside derby.

"I am so happy for Everton and nobody more than the chairman and manager whose rewards are starting to show," he enthused. "The biggest thing I miss is the derby. There are two great teams in one city and when I watch the derby it gives me goosebumps."

Szczesny confident Tottenham victory can inspire Arsenal to Montpellier success

    211142hp2.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny says that the Gunners are "buzzing" ahead of their important Champions League match against Montpellier on Wednesday.

Arsene Wenger's team emerged triumphant from the north London derby on Saturday, beating rival Tottenham 5-2.

And Szczesny says that the result has put the side in the perfect frame of mind for its home match against the defending French champion.

"We couldn't get a better time to play that game [against Montpellier]," he told Arsenal's official website. "We are buzzing today, we can't wait for the next game. We're confident.

"We've had a couple of poor results recently, but we're back on track and we're confident that we can get the three points and qualify for the knockout stages, which is the least you can ask from us. We want to make sure we do the job properly and qualify."

Arsenal currently sits in second place in its group behind Schalke, which came from behind to draw 2-2 when the two sides met in Gelsenkirchen.

It remains on course to qualify for the next round, however, and Szczesny hopes that the victory over Spurs will prove the catalyst for a change in the club's recent patchy form.

"I know that over the last few weeks the fans might have been frustrated, and we understand that completely," he said. "I think the team and the fans work as a unit, and they were fantastic [against Tottenham], they helped us to get a boost before the game and helped keep us going.

"They deserve a lot of credit for the result as well. We're certainly hoping that they can keep it the same and help us to win all the fixtures coming up. Obviously, all Premier League games are as important as the next one but I think the fans enjoy it just that little bit more [against Tottenham] - when we won you could see how much they were buzzing after the game.

"At the final whistle there were still 60,000 people there - the only fans who left were the Tottenham fans. It was fantastic."

Jurado: Barcelona has the best players in the world

    173174hp2.jpg

Spartak Moscow midfielder Jose Manuel Jurado feels that Barcelona has the best players in the world on its books and fears his side could be in for a tough game on Tuesday.

The Russian powerhouse was beaten 3-2 at Camp Nou earlier this Champions League campaign, and will be gunning for revenge when both teams meet again this week.

"Barcelona have not really changed much since Tito Vilanova has taken over. They still have the best players in the world and it will be very difficult to beat them," he was quoted as saying by EFE. "We will obviously try to beat them, but it will be very tough. They are one of the best teams in the world and play some great football.

"We have some great players as well, though, and we have been in fine form in the league."

Gallas: Banned Adebayor a big loss for Tottenham

    200997hp2.jpg

Tottenham defender William Gallas fears Emmanuel Adebayor’s three-match ban following his red card on Saturday could cost the team dearly in the coming matches.

Adebayor, who scored the opener, was given a straight red card early on after a reckless lunge on Santi Cazorla and then watched from the sidelines as his side capitulated to a 5-2 defeat.

"I think it will be a big loss for us because Adebayor has a lot of quality," Gallas told the Hackney Gazette. "He can keep the ball, he can score and we can play long or short."

The card came after Adebayor went in two-footed on Cazorla, but Gallas says it wasn't as clear-cut as it seemed.

"From the pitch it [the red card] was difficult for the players to accept," he said. "We spoke with the referee. We said to him ‘it’s not fair’, but some people on the TV said he deserved the red card.

"I think he [Adebayor] was sorry, even if he didn’t say anything. He was really sorry, we could see that on his face. Now we have to forget that game because it was painful."

The defender went on to explain that Adebayor's ejection was the clear turning point in the match.

"It is very difficult to accept [the result]. At the beginning of the game we played very well and we scored the first goal. I thought we controlled the game but after the sending-off of Adebayor it was really difficult for us," he went on.

"We were unlucky because we were down to 10 men and that’s hard, especially when you play away and when you play against a team like Arsenal, who play really good football. It’s really difficult to keep that score so I think we were unlucky. In the Man City game, and against Chelsea, I think we missed something but we have to work again and try to come back.

"The season is still long. We have to work hard and we know how hard it is to qualify for the Champions League."

Tottenham has the chance to put the derby defeat to one side as the club faces West Ham next Sunday and Gallas believes victory is crucial to end a recent run of successive defeats.

"I know it’s not easy sometimes but we have to come back to training, work again and try to have confidence because it’s true that confidence can be low," he added. "We lost 5-2 so the confidence can be low, but we will be okay.

"Every game is very good because it means you can forget about the game you have played before. West Ham will be one more difficult game but we have to carry on. We have a target, we have to keep working in training and it will come."

Lewandowski: Henry was an example to follow

    229448hp2.jpg

Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has revealed that he was a keen admirer of Thierry Henry during the Frenchman's time at Arsenal.

The former France international was widely regarded as one of the best players around in his heyday, and the 24-year-old kept a close eye on his performances for the Gunners.

"I didn't have one particular idol, but there was a player I tried to follow. It was Henry in his time at Arsenal," Lewandowski told UEFA.com. "I liked the way he played and moved on the pitch. I think he was a great player."

The Poland international also had his say on BVB coach Jurgen Klopp, and praised the 45-year-old's passionate approach.

"You can see on television how happy he is when we score, and how mad he gets after a failed move – but not with us, but rather with the ball not going into the goal," he said. "I think he lives and breathes not only the matches, but also the training."

Dortmund is currently preparing for Tuesday's Champions League match away against Ajax.

    Shevchenko rejects Ukraine job

    209159hp2.jpg

Andriy Shevchenko has turned down the chance to become Ukraine's new national team coach as he feels he is not ready for the job just yet.

The Ukrainian Football Federation (FFU) is in the market for a new coach following Oleg Blokhin's decision to leave for Dynamo Kiev earlier this season, and it had earmarked the former AC Milan star as the ideal candidate for the position.

Nevertheless, the 36-year-old believes taking charge of the national team would not be the right start to his coaching career.

"I believe that leading the national team of Ukraine today is a somewhat premature step for me,"he was quoted as saying on the governing body's website website. "I hope the leadership of the football federation can understand my decision."

Ukraine currently sits fifth in Group H of the 2014 World Cup qualification with two points from three games.

Arbeloa: Benzema is out of this world

    201159hp2.jpg

Alvaro Arbeloa has taken the time to praise Karim Benzema in the wake of Real Madrid's 5-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend.

The France international was directly involved in three of Madrid's five goals, and caused the Athletic defense all kinds of trouble with his impressive performance.

"You have to give him credit for a 10 out of 10 game. Benzema is out of this world, a very classy and talented footballer," Arbeloa was quoted as saying by Marca. "He had a really good game in which he played spectacularly and took advantage of goalscoring opportunities.

"He's a great striker who's getting his form back and who you have to acknowledge does extraordinary things."

Benzema has netted two goals in 10 La Liga appearances this term.

Puyol: Elbow injury the most painful experience I've had

    230379hp2.jpg

Barcelona defender Carles Puyol has revealed that his recent elbow injury was his most painful experience he has ever endured as a footballer but insists that it will not force him to alter his approach to the game.

The center back, who dislocated his elbow during the Catalans Champions League clash with Benfica in October, resumed match action in this weekend's 3-1 win over Zaragoza, and Puyol was delighted to make his comeback after his excruciating blow.

"I’m pleased to be back and I’m pleased that we won, I’m happy that I’m getting back into the rhythm of things," Puyol told Barca TV. "The elbow injury was my worst experience as far as injuries go. It was very painful. I didn’t think it would be that bad.

"The only positive thing about an arm injury is that you can start physical training sooner. I just need to gain a bit of mobility and strength."

Although Puyol has had his share of injuries, the defender has insisted that he will never back down on the pitch.

"You can’t think about what has happened to you in the past," he said. "If I stop myself from heading the ball or making tackles, it’s time to leave the sport. I always try to help the team, that was just an unfortunate play."

Puyol has made only four La Liga appearances so far this term due to injury.
