Beckham signing would be a 'fantastic statement' from West Ham, says chairman

    224109hp2.jpg

West Ham chairman David Gold believes the club could make a "fantastic statement" by securing the services of David Beckham upon his departure from LA Galaxy.

The 37-year-old will play his last match for the club on Dec. 1 and has been the subject of much speculation as Paris Saint-Germain and Melbourne Heart reportedly consider a deal for the former England captain.

But Gold feels that Beckham would favor a return to Premier League football and move back to the east end of London, where he grew up.

"He was an ambassador for the London 2012 bid and it would be a fantastic statement if he came to us," Gold told reporters. "He's an East End boy and it would be a fitting end to his career. We've also been mindful of his value as an ambassador to help us secure the Olympic Stadium."

Rafa Benitez confirmed as new Chelsea boss

    rafaelbeniteztouchline_576x324.jpg

Rafael Benitez has been confirmed as Chelsea's new manager, after the club sacked Roberto Di Matteo following Tuesday's 3-0 Champions League defeat to Juventus.

The 52-year-old Spaniard takes charge of the European champion on an interim basis until the end of the current campaign after spending almost two years out of work following his dismissal at Inter Milan.

A statement on the club's official website read: "The owner and the Board believe that in Benitez we have a manager with significant experience at the highest level of football, who can come in and immediately help deliver our objectives.

"The 52-year-old Spaniard is due to meet the players at the training ground in Cobham tomorrow [Thursday]."

Benitez will take charge of his second Premier League club after a successful six-year spell at Liverpool between 2004 and 2010.

His time on Merseyside led to success in Europe as he won the club's fifth European Cup in his second season in 2005, while he also secured the FA Cup a year later.

Roman Abramovich relieved Di Matteo of his duties on Wednesday morning despite the Italian guiding the club to its maiden Champions League trophy and a seventh FA Cup last season.

Di Matteo signed a two-year deal in the summer, but has seen his position questioned almost continually since with Pep Guardiola thought to wanted by the Russian oligarch to lead the club.

Benitez becomes the ninth Blues manager in nine years in the Abramovich era.

Ajax 1-4 Borussia Dortmund: Gotze guides German champions into knock-out stages

Borussia Dortmund recorded a 4-1 win over Ajax in Wednesday's Champions League Group D fixture at the Amsterdam ArenA.

BVB needed only eight minutes to open the scoring via Marco Reus, before Mario Gotze doubled the lead with a fine finish. A somewhat fortunate Robert Lewandowski strike then put the match to bed shortly before the interval, with Lewandowski making it four after the break. Substitute Danny Hoesen pegged one back for the hosts in the closing stages of the game.

The Bundesliga champions started the match the better side of the two, and grabbed the lead in the eighth minute. Reus set up Gotze down the right, then continued his run into the Ajax area, and calmly slotted home after receiving the ball back.

Sloppy defending after a BVB free kick in midfield resulted in the guests' second goal of the evening. Gotze was left unmarked after Mats Hummels' pass from midfield, and cut inside from the left before jinking past Ricardo van Rhijn and beating Kenneth Vermeer with a low shot at the near post.

Things would only get worse for Ajax in the remainder of the first half. Gotze tried his luck with a volley from outside the area in the 41st minute after Daley Blind's poor clearance, only to see his deflected shot parried away by Vermeer. Lewandowski was quick to pounce on the rebound, though, and tapped home from close range.

Ajax started the second half with attacking intention and came close in the 51st minute. Eriksen beat the offside trap after a pass from Boerrigter, but good positioning from Roman Weidenfeller prevented the 3-1.

Dortmund once more proved to be much more clinical in front of the goal in the 67th minute. Gotze sent in a delightful cross for Lewandowski, who superbly controlled the ball before firing home from a narrow angle.

The Amsterdam side would eventually get a goal. Eriksen set up Hoesen after a fine piece of skill and the former Fulham youngster found the net with a deflected shot off Neven Subotic.

Ajax remains Group D's number three with four points from five games. It travels to Real Madrid on Dec. 4 in its last Champions League game of the season.

Dortmund sits first in their section with 11 points, and hosts Manchester City on Matchday 6.

Kick It Out 'reassured' by FA's Clattenburg investigation

    223408hp2.jpg

English soccer's anti-racism campaign Kick It Out says it is "reassured" by the levels the Football Association have gone to in investigating matters of abuse in the game, after the governing body found cleared referee Mark Clattenburg of racism charges.

The 37-year-old Clattenburg had a formal complaint made against him by Chelsea after the Premier League clash between the West London club and Manchester United, after allegedly abusing midfielder John Obi Mikel; however, after taking all evidence into consideration, the FA have found that the referee has no case to answer. Kick It Out has praised the governing body for taking the time to launch a thorough investigation into the matter, as it did in incidents involving Luis Suarez and John Terry.

"Kick It Out is reassured by the willingness to investigate matters, as seen in three high-profile incidents spanning the past 13 months, once it has all the evidence to consider," Chair Lord Herman Ouseley said. "Irrespective of today's outcome, the message remains clear: report perceived abuse, whether seen or heard, to the relevant authorities for the required process to take place."

Rubin Kazan 3-0 Inter: Karadeniz & Rondon condemn Nerazzurri to runners-up spot

    231926hp2.jpg

Inter Milan settled for second place in the UEFA Europa League's Group H after the Italians crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Rubin Kazan on Thursday.

Karadeniz Gokdeniz's second-minute strike, which came about courtesy of a defensive mistake, and Salomon Rondon's pair of finishes in the latter stages highlighted the gulf in experience between the two teams in Russia.

With qualification already wrapped up, Andrea Stramaccioni opted to field a youthful XI for the trip to the Tsentralnyi Stadion, handing the likes of Andrea Romano, Marco Benassi and Isaac Donkor their Nerazzurri debuts.

It was one of their first-team stars that was guilty of gifting Rubin their first goal, though. In just the second minute, Alan Kasaev's cross was guided onto the post by Juan Jesus, allowing Karadeniz to tap home the rebound.

Philippe Coutinho was given another chance to stake his place in the Inter side, but he failed to piece together an opening for the visitors in the first half, while Marko Livaja again failed to prove his credentials as an able deputy for Diego Milito.

A scrappy initial period soon came to an end, with little in terms of enterprise being demonstrated by either outfit, and Stramaccioni threw on captain Javier Zanetti and European goal hero Rodrigo Palacio in an attempt to shake things up.

It looked like an inspired pair of substitutions as Inter began to take control of the match, as the Argentine forward interchanged with Andrea Ranocchia in a probe towards the Rubin box, but he saw his lot shot cannon off the post.

Unfortunately for the Italians, the hosts had an ace of their own up their sleeves in Rondon. Berbas Natcho's hooked pass over the Inter defense was latched onto by the former Malaga striker, and he outmuscled Donkor to net to make it 2-0.

Rubin Kazan finished off Inter, as Karadeniz drifted into the box from the right-hand side and drilled in a low cross for Rondon to tuck home from a matter of yards out.

The result leaves Rubin top of Group H and three points clear of the Serie A giant with one round of matches remaining, but the superior head-to-head record means the Russians progress as leaders of the pool.

Manchester United starlet Joshua King joins Blackburn on loan until January

    137563hp2.jpg

Manchester United youngster Joshua King has joined Blackburn Rovers on loan until January to bolster the League Championship side's attacking options over the festive period.

The forward is highly rated at Old Trafford but has been given the chance to seek out regular minutes and continue his development under new manager - and former Red Devils player - Henning Berg. The 43-year-old coach secured the deal for his 20-year-old Norwegian compatriot on the final day of the Football League loan window, and will strengthen the club as it looks to climb from sixth position in the table.

The Oslo-born player was signed by United as a 16-year-old in 2008, but has struggled to break into the first-team squad at Old Trafford; however, he played in the final five minutes of United's 1-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday evening as Sir Alex Ferguson sought to experiment having already qualified for the last 16.

King has had loan spells at Preston North End, German side side Borussia Monchengladbach and made 18 appearances for Hull City last season. If the forward wants a spot in Berg's starting XI, he will have to edge out Colin Kazim-Richards, Jordan Rhodes, Ruben Rochina and Nuno Gomes.
