Bayern Munich 1-1 Borussia Dortmund: Gotze earns champions deserved draw

    235433hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich retained their 11-point lead over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga by holding the champion to a thrilling 1-1 draw.

The first hour or so of the match was an even affair, with both sides registering some decent chances, but ultimately cancelling each other out. However, Toni Kroos put his side ahead on 66 minutes, only for Mario Gotze to equalise soon after.

The match started at a frantic pace, with Bayern desperately trying to notch an early advantage, as they had done when these two sides met in the Super Cup in August. Franck Ribery screwed a right-footed volley wide after Neven Subotic partially cleared a Kroos free kick to him inside three minutes.

Seconds later, though, Bayern almost went behind when a suicidal backpass from Holger Badstuber let Marco Reus put Manuel Neuer under pressure, but when the former Gladbach man collected the ball he could only find the heavily-marked Robert Lewandowski.

Ribery was involved once more a few minutes later, putting a lovely ball across the face of goal which Marcel Schmelzer tapped behind for a corner with a red shirt looming. Soon after, Subotic made a fantastic tackle to deny Thomas Muller, who may well have scored were it not for the Serb's block.

It seemed like a matter of time before the deadlock was broken, but barring a shot from Kroos which went high and wide, the openings became rarer and rarer, with a lengthy stoppage after an injury to Badstuber slowing the pace of the game.

Within seconds of the break, though, the visitors almost took the lead in superb fashion. Mats Hummels strode out of defence to collect the ball and sprayed it forward to Reus, who took it down superbly and unleashed a ferocious left-footed volley which Neuer did excellently to parry.

After the restart, Hummels had a golden opportunity of his own to put his side ahead. A quickly-taken free kick found the former Bayern defender unmarked and onside, and he attempted to pad it beyond Neuer, only for the keeper to pad it away.

Dortmund had started the second half with far more impetus than it had the first, and a perfect through-ball from Gotze found Reus, who was forced wide by Neuer, and could not quite force it across the face of goal.

The duo then combined once more, but this time Neuer was on hand to save the 20-year-old's close-range header after an excellent right-wing cross. At the other end, the closest Bayern had come to getting on the scoresheet was a Mandzukic volley which Roman Weidenfeller got himself behind with ease.

Gradually, though, they began to take control once more. Ribery attempted to scissor-kick a Philipp Lahm cross into the corner, only to scuff the ball, before Muller had credible appeals for a penalty denied after a goalmouth scramble.

Eventually, they got their breakthrough. Muller fed Kroos on the edge of the box and the 22-year-old sidestepped both Hummels and Subotic, before firing a crisp shot beyond Weidenfeller's outstretched palm.

The lead stood for just six minutes, though. Jakub Blaszczykowski bought a corner off Jerome Boateng, and the resulting set piece fell to Gotze, who drove a shot through a sea of bodies and into the bottom corner.

BVB spent much of the last 10 minutes defending for dear life, with Muller firing a great left-footed effort just wide, before almost fooling Weidenfeller with a cheeky shot that was disguised as a cross.

The 32-year-old keeper was forced into excellent saves to deny Kroos, who had been played in by Mario Gomez, and Javi Martinez, who met a corner with a fantastic header.

In the end, though, both sides held firm to secure a draw which suits the hosts far better than the visitors.

:love:Reading 3-4 Manchester United: Rooney & Van Persie fire visitors three points clear

    235425hp2.jpg

Manchester United pulled three points clear of rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table as goals from Anderson, Robin van Persie and two from Wayne Rooney secured a 4-3 victory against Reading.

All seven strikes came in a quite remarkable first half of football, with both sides swapping the lead before Rooney, with his second, and Van Persie both found the net to score the goals that ultimately secured the three points for the visitors.

The Royals, who were unchanged, took an early lead as Jobi McAnuff's in-swinging cross from the left was only partially cleared by Jonny Evans and Hal Robson-Kanu capitalised on the loose ball, hammering an effort high into the far corner past a helpless Anders Lindegaard.

United's response, however, was immediate and lethal. Just four minutes after Robson-Kanu's strike Anderson raced onto Ashley Young's through ball and lashed past Federici to pull Sir Alex's men level with a second to follow shortly after.

Referee Mark Halsey then pointed to the spot after Evans was bundled over in the area by Jay Tabb and Rooney stepped up and duly answered his manager's call for more goals by slamming the ball into the far corner, sending Federici the wrong way.

This astonishing first half witnessed a further twist, however, as the pendulum swung back in Reading's favour courtesy of two quick-fire goals from corners.

Nicky Shorey's pin-point deliveries from the right-hand-side were powerfully headed home with, firstly, Adam Le Fondre getting on the scoresheet a day before his 26th birthday before Sean Morrison climbed above Evans to make it 3-2 Reading.

The first-half drama ceased to reach a conclusion there, though, and United once again hit back to equalize. Young and Patrice Evra linked up superbly well on the left-hand-side before the latter squared for Rooney to bury from close range.

And, to the astonishment of everyone in the ground, the goals kept on coming. Sir Alex's side once again regaining the lead as, after 34 minutes, Van Persie latched onto Michael Carrick's through ball and slotted home his 10th league goal of the campaign with supreme composure.

The Dutch striker was unfortunate not to add to his tally before halftime as his close-range effort was cleared from underneath the crossbar but replays suggested that the ball had, in fact, crossed the line.

A comparatively dull start to the second half saw United slow the tempo although there were shouts for a penalty from the home support as Adrian Mariappa fell to the ground under a challenge from Patrice Evra but the Frenchman got just enough of a foot on the ball and no spot kick came.

Van Persie then wasted a glorious chance to grab his second of the match as he amazingly fired wide after robbing Federici.

The former Arsenal striker closed down the Reading goalkeeper and looked certain to make it 5-3 although, almost replicating Fernando Torres' infamous miss against the Red Devils, smashed his shot off target with Ferderici scrambling and the goal gaping.

Reading continued to pour forward in search of an equaliser although rarely troubled Lindegaard in the second period, with Tabb firing over before Morrison forced Lindegaard to tip over in stoppage time.

The result moves Sir Alex's side three points clear of City with next weekend's Manchester derby looking increasingly pivotal while the Royals remain in the drop zone.

Moyes plays down top four credentials after 1-1 draw with Manchester City

    220943hp2.jpg

Everton manager David Moyes has played down his team's chances of finishing in the top four after the Toffees surrendered a winning position to draw with Manchester City.

Marouane Fellaini gave the visitors a well-deserved lead before conceding a penalty after pulling down Edin Dzeko in the box and the Scot feels that their seventh draw in nine games is evidence of a lack of cutting edge.

"I think it will be hard for us to make the Champions League. It'll be a big thing for us," Moyes told the Daily Mirror.

"I think we've got confidence and the players are playing really well. We're just lacking maybe getting over the edge."

Moyes hinted that injuries and lack of depth in the forward position will likely play a factor in Everton's results. Everton has drawn its past three matches.

"We're missing Kevin Mirallas, Victor Anichebe and we're just short of other forward options at times to maybe win us the games, that's why getting so many draws," Moyes explained.

"I don't want to be a manager who keeps saying, 'We're playing well and not winning', because I'd rather be a manager whose team weren't playing well and winning.

"But the facts are there to see and we have to hope that good performances eventually lead to good results."

Moyes believes in his side's ability but has questioned whether they have the capability to match their top performances in a consistent manner over the course of the season.

"When we play over 90 minutes against someone we've always got a good chance. But can we do it over 38 games,"he asked.

"We should have more points. It's not been this point or the point against Arsenal; it's a couple of games before that where we've let winning positions slip to draw them."

"We're certainly not a million miles off them and we can be quite close to them."

    Arteta: Arsenal fans deserve better

    227015hp2.jpg

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta believes that the fans are right to be critical of the players after the Gunners' 2-0 defeat to Swansea City at the Emirates Stadium that saw them slip to 10th in the Premier League.

"They've got all the right to be upset with us," Arteta told reporters. "We can't keep asking them to be behind us if afterwards we don't give them back what they deserve. So it's up to us."

He added, "We have to respect what they do. We will get criticized, and it's part of our job, but the main thing is everyone gives 100 percent and that's what we're trying to do."

The fans booed the team off the pitch after two late goals by the Michu sunk the north Londoners, whose poor form has seen some supporters call for manager Arsene Wenger to be sacked, with them trailing league leaders Manchester United by 15 points, but the 30-year-old midfielder thinks that the blame should rest with the players.

"We can't keep asking the fans to stay behind us. They will be very frustrated and it's up to us to put it right," Arteta said.

"When there are bad results, obviously everyone will be criticized. Not only the manager but the players and the staff, we are no different. It's our fault if we haven't done it."

El Shaarawy: Cassano and Ibrahimovic exits have helped me

    235115hp2.jpg

Stephan El Shaarawy feels that the departures of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Cassano in the summer transfer window have helped his development at AC Milan this term.

The 20-year-old forward has been one of the revelations of the 2012-13 campaign so far, and has become one of the undisputed stars of Serie A following his fine performances for the Rossoneri.

"With the departures of Ibrahimovic and Cassano, two great strikers left and I've more space now. I started the season in the best way possible personally; I grew a lot," El Shaarawy told the official UEFA website.

The Italy international then went on to thank Massimiliano Allegri for the faith shown in him since his arrival at the club in the summer of 2011.

"I felt a lot of faith from his side, especially last season when I made 28 appearances," El Shaarawy explained.

"This year I've felt even more faith, because the first two matches in Serie A didn't go well and he still continued to pick me. I have to thank him a lot for that."

El Shaarawy has netted 12 goals in 15 Serie A appearances this season.

'I want to stay' - Shawcross ready to commit future to Stoke

    202969hp2.jpg

Stroke defender Ryan Shawcross is ready to pledge his future to the club after revealing that talks are ongoing regarding a new contract.

The 25-year-old joined the Potters permanently in 2008 after enjoying a successful loan spell with the club, and went on to be named captain by manager Tony Pulis in 2010.

And Shawcross believes that the faith and support he has recieved from his boss over the years has contributed massively to his desire to remain at the Britannia Stadium.

"I want to stay and they want to keep me," he told reporters. "The talks are ongoing. I’m happy, the club is happy.

"But the main reason I want to stay is the gaffer. He’s been great to me throughout my time here and made me captain at a young age. I’ve told him I want to stay here.

"He’s improved me as a player every year — and he got me into the England squad because that was a goal of mine.

"I don’t want to go — even if a top four club comes in for me — but it’s all down to the people above me now."

Swansea win over Arsenal was 'like a dream', says Michu

    222833hp2.jpg

Swansea City attacker Michu has described his two-goal performance in Saturday's 2-0 win over Arsenal as "like a dream".

Michael Laudrup's men edged possession and the chances against the Gunners and were rewarded as the Spaniard struck in the 88th and 90th minutes to seal victory.

"It was like a dream," the 2 million pound summer buy from Rayo Vallecano told the club's official website.

"The defense was good, in attack we had 12 attempts on target, so we were very good all through the team.

"For the goals, it was a great pass from Luke [Moore] for the first and Nathan [Dyer] did a lot of good work for the second. I was very happy to take my chances and score. I'm very happy here with my teammates, the gaffer and the club. I hope it continues like this."

The 26-year-old, who has scored in each of his side's last three wins, believes that the seventh-placed Swans can get even better.

"This team can go up and up," he continued.

"I'm very happy we are on 23 points, but we need to keep it going. But we have to continue working hard. If we don't work hard we will lose for sure.

"We have more tough games coming up, and we have to keep the same attitude that we have shown recently."

Bayern Munich confirms Holger Badstuber will undergo surgery on Monday

    235416hp2.jpg

Bayern Munich has confirmed that central defender Holger Badstuber will undergo surgery on Monday after tearing the cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The German international suffered the injury tackling Mario Gotze in Bayern’s 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday at the Allianz Arena, and is expected to be out for at least five months.

The timing of the injury is even more unfortunate for the 23-year-old, as he only returned from a muscle injury 11 days ago.

“It’s a bitter blow,” coach Juup Heynckes told the official Bayern Munich website. “The players were very shocked. He was just getting back up to speed. It’s a real choker for the lad.”

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the CEO of the Bavarian giants, also expressed his sympathy.
“Naturally, it’s put a real dampener on our evening," he said. "He said his studs got stuck in the turf and he felt it go immediately.”

Die Roten are currently top of the Bundesliga table, eight points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, and will face BATE Borisov in the Champions League on Wednesday, having already qualified for the next stage.

Soldado: Players to blame for Valencia struggles

    226096hp2.jpg

Roberto Soldado has admitted that Valencia's squad must take the blame for the club's poor performances, not former boss http://www.goal.com/en-us/people/argentina/1211/mauricio-pellegrinoMauricio Pellegrino.

The 41-year-old coach was sacked following Los Che's 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Real Sociedad, leaving the club languishing in 12th place, but the striker has claimed it is the player's fault.

"When things go wrong we look to the sidelines and not at ourselves," Soldado told AS. "But now we have to think about what we [the players] can do to improve the situation.

"It is the players who have to admit the responsibility for our current situation. After what happened yesterday [Saturday] I want to apologies to all the fans."

The Spain international was reluctant to discuss Pellegrino's sacking, however, and believes the club must now move on and show the necessary desire to turn the season around.

"I do not want to be the one to asses whether it [the coach's sacking] is fair or not. The decision has been made," he added. "There has been a change and we need to get to work. We are a small team, but we need to show heart and character on the field."

Benitez uncertain over futures of Lampard and Cole at Chelsea

    234445hp2.jpg

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez has denied claims that Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are certain to leave the club at the end of the season.

The England duo's contracts expire in the summer and Benitez appeared to suggest that the west London outfit would not offer them new deals in a recent press conference.

However, the Spaniard has described the confusion as a "misunderstanding", though he did admit uncertainty over whether the pair will stay.

"When I was asked the other day, maybe it was a misunderstanding or maybe my English was not good enough, but the situation I know is that they are finishing their contracts [in the summer]," he told reporters. "Past that, I do not know. I know that Frank is happy here and he is a player that is part of the leadership, he is one of the important players, but I do not know about his future.

"So I cannot say yes or no, he will stay or he will leave, in January or even at the end of the season. At this moment, I do not know."

Benitez also refuted claims that his meeting with the club board on Friday had concerned anyone leaving Stamford Bridge.

"We didn't talk about any players going," he continued. "The board were asking me about players coming but not about any players leaving."

Norwich City 2-1 Sunderland: Pilkington and Bassong pile pressure on O'Neill

    235677hp2.jpg

Goals from Sebastien Bassong and Anthony Pilkington secured a fourth successive home win for Norwich at Carrow Road, as Sunderland’s second half fightback was not enough after a meek opening 45 minute display.

The Canaries went into this match on the back of a seven game unbeaten streak, while Sunderland was sitting just above the relegation zone thanks to just one win in its previous eight games.

This contrast in fortunes was evident from the beginning, as the home side started with more far confidence.

It was therefore no surprise when the Norwich took the lead on eight minutes, when a fine piece of interplay between the influential Wes Hoolahan and Steven Whittaker resulted in a free kick on the right hand side of the box thanks to a clumsy challenge by Danny Rose.

Robert Snodgrass duly stepped up and delivered a wicked ball into the area with his left foot, which deflected off Carlos Cuellar to leave Bassong to gleefully tap home from two yards out with Simon Mignolet stranded.

Spurred on by a raucous home crowd, Norwich continued to dominate possession, and were rewarded with a second goal after a fine passage of patient passing play when Bradley Johnson played a precise long ball over the top to find Pilkington just onside and racing through on goal.

The former Huddersfield Town man made the finish look easy, jinking inside Cuellar’s challenge before striking the ball emphatically into the far post for his second goal in successive home games.

Things were looking ominous for Martin O’Neill’s men, but they were thrown a lifeline when Craig Gardner’s long-range effort squirmed through the hands of Mark Bunn and into the far post to halve the deficit just before the break.

Former Ipswich Town striker Connor Wickham replaced the injured Steven Fletcher at halftime, entering the Carrow Road field to a chorus of boos from the home crowd.

The 19-year-old almost silenced the Canaries faithful within a couple of minutes, as Stephane Sessegnon’s driven cross was brilliantly blocked by Ryan Bennett with the England Under-21 international lurking inside the six yard box.

Sunderland was certainly playing with more urgency after halftime, and should have pulled level when Gardner’s swerving free kick from all of 30 yards came back off the post to the feet of Matthew Kilgallon, who somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar with the goal gaping.

The Mackems came close twice within the next few minutes, with Javier Garrido first clearing Gardner‘s shot off the line after Bunn’s weak punch from a corner, before the goalkeeper redeemed himself with a fine save from Sessegnon‘s shot after the Benin international was put through on goal by Rose.

The offside flag denied Wickham a dream goal when he was on hand to tap in Bunn’s fumble from Rose’s stinging volley after a half-cleared corner, as the guests continued to press.

However, despite the second half renaissance, the Sunderland was unable to get that crucial second goal, and left Carrow Road empty-handed with Martin O’Neill surely wondering why it took his players 45 minutes to show any ambition.

Carrick: Manchester United can improve on strong start

    211734hp2.jpg

Michael Carrick feels Manchester United can perform to a higher standard despite leading the Premier League by three points.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side edged to victory in a 4-3 thriller against Reading on Saturday but the midfielder was disappointed with his side's defensive display.

"That's the standards we set," Carrick told the Manchester Evening News. "We're not happy until we know we're playing to our potential. The pleasing thing is there's a lot more to come from us.

"There's a lot more room for improvement in certain aspects of our play but at the same time we're sitting on top of the league and we've won again. We can't get too down about things, there are a lot of positives."

The Red Devils fell behind early at the Madejski Stadium but came back twice before netting what turned out to be the winner in the 34th minute of a frantic first half with Robin van Persie's 10th league goal of the campaign.

Although United showcased defensive frailties, the England international maintained that he always had faith in the club's ability to come back, explaining: "Even if we do go a goal down we always feel we've got the firepower from different people.

"That's the strength in depth of the attacking options and that's what keeps driving us on and we never give up. Personally I always felt confident, even when we were going goals behind, that we could still get back in the game and win the game, and that obviously proved the case."

Neymar: I want Robinho to join Santos

Neymar says he is desperate for Robinho to join him at Santos.

The AC Milan forward has endured a frustrating campaign to date and failed to find the form which saw the Rossoneri spend 18 million euros on his signature back in 2010.

Rumors have continued to linger about his future at San Siro, with the 28-year-old persistently linked with a move back to his homeland and his former club.

Neymar admits he would be delighted if his club could tempt Robinho back home, and partner him with his international teammate.

"I am biased because he is my idol," Neymar told Xinhua."To have an idol back at the club would be something special.

"If the fans want him then I want him here too. But ultimately it's the president [Luis Alvaro Ribeiro] who decides. I always want the best players to come to Santos, the doors are always open to good players."

Cazorla: Arsenal must cut out inconsistency to challenge for title

    217957hp2.jpg

Santi Cazorla says that he and his Arsenal teammates must cut out their inconsistency if they are to challenge for the Premier League title.

A late capitulation to Swansea City on Saturday saw the Gunners drop to 10th place, 15 points off leaders Manchester United, after they were frustrated by draws with Fulham and Aston Villa.

"We don't know exactly what the problem is," Cazorla remarked to the Mail on Sunday. "It's true that we're inconsistent. I believe that, to challenge for the Premier League, these games can't get away from us.

"Take the Fulham game, we were 2-0 up. You can't then be drawing within five minutes. Those points aren't coming back. And the other day, against Aston Villa, there's a game which I believe we really had the desire to win, because these are points that we can't let get away.

"Then you see City, [Manchester] United winning on those days. That's the difference. To fight for the title, it's about taking points from those teams.

"It's a little bit frustrating. We're a good team, good players, training well but there are moments in those games when we don't know how to control them. There's a significant gap between us and United and City. They've got away a bit. We have very little margin for error."

Hodgson: Rooney and Gerrard have unfinished England business

    195153hp2.jpg

Roy Hodgson believes Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard have "unfinished business" for England at major championships, and feels the pair have the quality to lead the Three Lions to glory in Brazil at World Cup 2014.

Despite bringing trophies to Manchester United and Liverpool during their club careers, Rooney and Gerrard have failed to replicate that success on the international stage, to the disappointment of England fans.

However, the 65-year-old coach states while the Anfield captain will be 34 at the next tournament, he has "world-class ability" - and says his Red Devils rival is a player who can "decide games."

"Wayne [Rooney] is a great player, a player who decides games," he told the Daily Mail. "Yet he would be the first to admit that he has unfinished business for England at a major championship - Steven Gerrard comes into that category, too."

"[Gerrard] will be very important, because of his playing ability, because of his tournament experience, which he can pass on to younger players, and because of his captaincy qualities."

Hodgson believes the Anfield skipper still has a lot to offer the national side, and can be a boost in terms of both his skill and temperament: "In his best moments, he has world-class ability, which he has shown for the national team on many occasions. With 19 months to go before the World Cup, we have to hope he can keep fit and retain his great athleticism."

Hodgson continued: "If so, it's going to be fantastic to have him with us. He would be 34 but that's not a great age for a footballer any more and Liverpool are managing him well.

"He is a captain who cares, one willing to spend time with other players, and he is not part of any clique. He transcends, to some extent, all of that."

England are currently second in their World Cup qualifying group, with six more matches to negotiate successfully in order to reach Brazil in 2014.

And Hodgson stated it was important to "dispel the myth that players don't care" after taking the job earlier in 2012 amid accusations of the squad being content to fail for England: "I could have been tempted, especially after the criticism that followed some major tournaments, to believe that the players didn't care that much about England and that their thoughts were elsewhere.

"But it was really pleasant to find that nothing could be further from the truth. I know I cause disappointment when I leave anyone out of a friendly as I take the opportunity to look at other players," he added.

Ashley Young: I am versatile enough for Manchester United

    227191hp2.jpg

Ashley Young has said he is versatile enough to play wherever Sir Alex Ferguson decides to use him for Manchester United, suggesting he can cope with the manager recently switching to a diamond midfield formation.

With Antonio Valencia and Nani both injured, the 70-year-old boss has started experimenting with three central midfielders - but found space for Young on the left as United beat Reading 4-3 on Saturday evening.

However, the 27-year-old attacker has said he is not worried by his manager's recent preferences - especially as he is relieved simply to be playing again after a spell out through injury.

"I wasn't worried when the diamond formation emerged. It was fine," he told reporters. "I'm a versatile player who can operate in a number of different positions so I'm comfortable with whatever formation the manager picks."

The winger missed six Premier League games this season with a knee injury, but was on hand to set up a goal against Reading as United went three points clear of champions Manchester City.

And Young revealed it has been a new challenge being out on the sidelines at Old Trafford, as his injury record at Villa Park was exemplary: "When I was at Villa, I barely missed a match so I’ve found these periods when I've been out very difficult to take."

He continued: "As a footballer you always want to be playing. It is never nice when you are on the sidelines.

"I never realised how hard it was to keep yourself motivated when everybody else is out training and you are stuck inside doing rehab."

Sir Alex Ferguson remains coy on Vidic starting role in derby

    219082hp2.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson is renowned for his mind games, and appeared to be playing them again when asked whether or not Nemanja Vidic will start in the upcoming derby game against crosstown rival Manchester City.

The Serbian defender is back in full training after suffering a knee injury against Galatasaray in the Champions League in September, and after a successful operation he is expected to start against Romanian side Cluj in Wednesday's final Champions League group game, with United having already qualified for the knock-out stages.

That has sparked speculation that Vidic may well go on to lead the Red Devils out against Manchester City on Sunday at the Etihad in the Premier League, but Sir Alex was quick to rule out that possibility.

"No, no, no, but Wednesday is a good starting point, although it depends on the lad himself," the manager told The Sun. "It will be a big bonus to have him back."

The fact that he hasn't ruled out his captain entirely though, by stating it is down to the player himself, suggests he could be involved on Sunday.

The United rearguard has been distinctly porous in Vidic's absence, notably conceding three first half goals to Premier League strugglers Reading in a 4-3 win on Saturday.
