Downing no longer transfer candidate considering recent form, says Rodgers

    232777hp2.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says has praised Stewart Downing for his recent play and says he could stay at the club "for a number of years yet."

The winger's struggles since joining for 20 million pounds in the summer of 2011 had prompted the Reds boss to suggest that he could be sold in January but the England man has improved his performances of late and is keen to remain at Anfield.

"Over the last six or seven weeks, his consistency has been outstanding and he has been asked to play in a number of different positions," Rodgers told reporters. "I was delighted for him, because it was a top performance against Fulham [on Saturday]. He scored a goal, he created a goal and he was a threat. He played really well against Aston Villa at fullback.

"He's at an age where he can be at the top of his game. He is an outstanding player and, mentally, he is really in tune with the team and the work. When he is playing like he was [against Fulham], there are not too many players who can play on the sides better than him. Hopefully he can continue with his form."

Downing's play has impressed Rodgers to the point that he has expressed his desire to keep him at Anfield for the long haul, even after his current deal runs out.

"He's still got a few years left on his contract here. We don't want him to go anywhere - all we have ever asked is that every player can be at the top of their game and be as good as they can possibly be," Rodgers said. "If he continues along the lines that he currently is, he'll be here for a number of years yet.

"Confidence is the key to everything and there's no doubt that his confidence levels are very high at the moment but he knows that to maintain that he has to continue to work hard and keep doing things consistently well."

Liverpool manager Rodgers refutes claims of Sturridge contract clause

    241757hp2.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is adamant no January signings have attempted to dictate what position they will play in contract negotiations.

The Anfield club has been heavily linked with Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge, who is expected to complete a move to Merseyside when the transfer window re-opens next month. It has been reported Sturridge, 23, wanted a clause written into his contract specifying that he will be used as a center forward by Rodgers.

But, while the Liverpool manager would not confirm that the England international had completed a medical ahead of the transfer, the former Chelsea coach insisted that there had been no request for a clause.

"No one will come into this football club and demand where they play, that's for sure," Rodgers told reporters. "It has been - as any sort of negotiations with any clubs with any players [are] - it isn't straight forward."

Rodgers also denied that Stewart Downing would be leaving the club in January after a string of improved performances.

"I see these reports about him going out and leaving. We don't want him to go anywhere," Rodgers said.
"All we've ever asked is that every player is at the top of their game and be the best as what they possibly can be every day and in the games. And if he continues along the lines that he is, as I say, he'll be here for a few more years yet."

Alves: 'We are here to help Vilanova'

    231043hp2.jpg

Dani Alves has said that every member of the Barcelona team is there to help Tito Vilanova through his battle with cancer.

The Blaugrana boss recently suffered the relapse of the disease, which kept him from taking his place on the bench for part of last season, and subsequently underwent surgery to remove the tumour.

"We are here to help him be," the Brazilian told O Estado de Sao Paulo. "That's why every victory is dedicated to him. Football comes second now, because he is struggling for his life."

Vilanova had led Barca to its best-ever start to a Liga season, and although the club holds a 16-point lead over reigning champion Real Madrid, Alves is adamant that the title isn't decided.

"The gap is more than considerable," he explained. "But we should remain grounded as we still have many games left and the championship is far from over. I'm not surprised by our results so far.

He added, "We are reaping the fruits of our labour. We worked hard, and the results are following."

The former Sevilla man has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou in recent weeks, but is adamant that he has no intention of leaving.

"Those are interventions made to destabilize us. I feel good and I want to stay," Alves said.

Barcelona gets back to action after the winter hiatus by entertaining Espanyol on January 5.

Del Bosque: Casillas is the pride of Real Madrid

    241739hp2.jpg

Iker Casillas is the "pride of Real Madrid", according to Spain boss and former Blancos coach Vicente del Bosque.

The 143-cap international was controversially left out of Jose Mourinho's starting lineup for the trip to Malaga recently in favor of Antonio Adan.

The Spanish champion went on to lose 3-2 in Andalusia but the 61-year-old has backed his skipper to bounce back.

"Iker arrived at the age of 10," he was quoted as saying by Marca. "His parents deserve a lot of merit, having brought him to the training center, and I don't think they were made of money.

"Iker is the pride of Real Madrid. He is the only one to have come through the youth team, and it would be good to recognize what he was done as he's done a lot. He carries the values of Real Madrid."

Taarabt: My agent is in talks with AC Milan

    242035hp2.jpg

QPR star Adel Taarabt has claimed that his agent is in talks with AC Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani regarding a potential move to San Siro.

The Morocco international has impressed at Loftus Road this season and has consequently been linked with a move away from the struggling west London club.

Taarabt says that only a move to AC Milan would tempt him to turn down the advances of top English clubs as he sees the Serie A side as a potential stepping stone to a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

"I would only refuse offers from the big English clubs if Milan made me an offer," Taarabt told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"My agent is in talks with Galliani, but it depends on what happens with Robinho and [reported AC Milan target Javier] Pastore.

"Milan aren't going through a glorious period now, and they're no longer a part of the top clubs. However, if I joined Milan then it would open up the doors for me to great clubs like Real Madrid and Barca."

Taarabt believes that the success of Kevin-Prince Boateng in Milan is proof that he could succeed with the Italian giants.

The 23-year-old played with the Ghana midfielder at Tottenham but both struggled to make an impact on the first team at White Hart Lane before being sold.

"My friend Boateng is also at Milan," he added. "When we were at Tottenham he was often in the stands, so I think that I have a chance too."

Rodgers set to offer Gerrard new Liverpool deal

    241731hp2.jpg

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has announced that captain Steven Gerrard is set to be offered a new contract with the club.

The 32-year-old, who has 18 months remaining on his current deal, has been hampered by niggling injuries over the past few seasons – ankle and groin specifically – which have seen him struggle to feature in more than half of his team’s games over the past two years.

However, Gerrard has featured in every Premier League game under Rodgers so far this season, and the new boss is keen to tie his skipper down on a long-term deal.

"Steven is vital to us and I recognize that." Rodgers is quoted as saying by The Guardian. "I know he has 18 months left on his contract but I would want him to go beyond that for this club and this team. What I would say with Steven is he has a real hunger to succeed. He may be 32 years of age, but he's still got so much left. He applies himself right, he eats well, he recovers well, he works well, he does everything right.

He added, "This is a guy who has led his life right as a football player and that allows you to play well into your 30s. I would want him to stay beyond his current contract and extend it. There is absolutely no question about that. He has played every minute of every league game for us which shows what an incredible figure for us he is."

Rodgers’ comments come after Liverpool’s 4-0 demolition of Fulham on Saturday, in which Gerrard nabbed a goal and an assist in arguably his most impressive performance this season.

    Ibrahimovic: Verratti has surprised me

    215646hp2.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has praised his Paris Saint-Germain teammate Marco Verratti, and hailed the starlet’s "immense talent".

Both players arrived from Italy over the summer and have helped PSG stay in the running for the Ligue 1 title.

"Marco is the guy who has surprised me the most," Ibrahimovic admitted to the French club’s official website.

"Though I played in Italy last season, I did not know anything about him because he played in the second division.

"I am in agreement with all the positive things being said about him. I would say he is even better than you think.

"By recruiting him, PSG have made a very good investment. He has immense talent. You just need to give him time to progress at his own pace. Nobody should forget that he just turned 20."

Les Parisiens saw off Stade Brestois 3-0 on Friday night to go into the winter break top of Ligue 1.

Bojan rules out Barcelona goal celebration

    237012hp2.jpg

Bojan Krkic insists he will not celebrate if he scores against Barcelona.

His current side, AC Milan, has been drawn against the Catalan giants in the last 16 of the Champions League, having qualified by finishing second in its group behind Malaga.

But after coming through the ranks at Camp Nou and the club's famous La Masia academy, he told Mundo Deportivo it would be "impossible" to celebrate should he score in either leg of the knockout tie.

The Spaniard added: "It will be extra special for me. God willing I hope to be lucky enough to face Barca."

Bojan left the Catalans for Roma in 2011, but is currently on loan at Massimiliano Allegri’s Rossoneri.

Following Milan's defeat to his parent club on Saturday night, the 22-year-old said: "We are in a state of transition. Milan want to get the stability back and I think we can do it.

"We have good players, a good team and we will keep improving."

    Tottenham close on Sneijder

    wesleysneijderceleb20120826_576x324.jpg

Tottenham could be set for a major boost in the January transfer window after reports in Italy claimed Inter Milan midfielder Wesley Sneijder has agreed terms on a move.

Sneijder, 28, has been out of the Inter first-team for three-months, with Nerazzurri head coach Andrea Stramaccioni insisting Dutchman's absence from his team is a tactical decision, while others at the club have suggested it is because he has not signed a new deal.

With the situation looking increasingly unsure, reports have moved Tottenham to the head of the queue if the London club can agree a fee – believed to be around £12 million - for the transfer window.

Sniejder starred at the 2010 World Cup and was an integral part of the Inter side that swept to an unprecedented treble under Jose Mourinho that season, while his friend and countryman Rafael van der Vaart revealed in the summer that he would be happy to move to the Premier League.

"Of course he would like to play in England, it's the biggest league in the world," Van der Vaart said of Sneijder in the summer. "He is a good friend of mine and we have contact almost every day. He knows what to expect in the Premier League."

Andre Villas-Boas has been tracking Portuguese compatriot Joao Moutinho to fill the attacking hole at Spurs, but the Porto midfielder’s high price has prevented an agreement and saw a move collapse at the end of the summer window.

    Rooney vows to bounce back

    waynerooneyback20121110_576x324.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has fired an ominous warning to Newcastle ahead of their Boxing Day clash, claiming he will "relish" the opportunity to atone for his "off day" against Swansea.

Rooney failed to fire in last Sunday's 1-1 draw at the Liberty Stadium, proving uncharacteristically wasteful in possession and ineffective in front of goal. One stray pass in particular, which should have teed up Javier Hernandez for a winner but was easily intercepted by Chico Flores, was the final straw for furious United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, and Rooney was hauled off shortly after.

The England striker now views the packed fixture list over the holiday season as a chance to play himself back into form - starting with Newcastle's visit to Old Trafford on Wednesday.

"I could feel it [was not going to be my day] on the pitch," Rooney said. "Some days you have an off day I could feel that and I couldn't complain at being substituted.

"I think the thing about football, and especially over the Christmas period, is that you have games and this game has gone for me and it is certainly not one I will remember, but I will relish the next one."The position we are in at the minute, it is a great opportunity to make that gap at the top of the table even bigger."

United hold a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League table after their first draw of the season. And Rooney is targeting back-to-back wins against Newcastle and West Brom as they look to break clear of title rivals Manchester City.

"We are still in a good position with two home games coming up," Rooney added. "We need to make sure we take maximum points from them. We know it's early days and there is a long way to go, but we are in a healthy position at the moment so we need to try and keep on."

Newcastle, who finished fifth last season, have found results harder to come by this time round and currently languish in 14th place in the table. Ferguson does not believe Pardew's men have become a bad side, but feels increased scrutiny of their style of play and some key injuries have hindered their cause."The second time around clubs are starting to analyse them a little bit differently, plus the fact more importantly they have had some injuries," Ferguson said.

"(Yohan) Cabaye is out until the new year, (Ryan) Taylor is out until next year. He has had one or two important players injured and that does make a difference when you don't have as strong a squad as the likes of ourselves, City and Chelsea.
"I am not entirely surprised but I am surprised how low down the table they are."

QPR 1-2 West Brom: Green own goal hands Redknapp second straight defeat

    242370hp2.jpg

A number of controversial refereeing decisions helped West Brom inflict a 2-1 defeat on Harry Redknapp's QPR as the hosts saw a late penalty appeal rejected at Loftus Road.

A first-half strike from Chris Brunt and a Robert Green own goal gave the visitors a convincing lead - one that they would hold onto despite a Djibril Cisse goal that briefly inspired the home side.

The hosts began the game positively as Stephane Mbia curled a shot from 20 yards just wide of Ben Foster's post, but that turned out to be the only moment of danger either side posed in the early going.

West Brom had barely threatened Robert Green's goal, but the excellent Mulumbu, reinstated to the side following suspension, was afforded too much time in the hosts' half, allowing him to feed the ball into Chris Brunt. The Northern Irishman had ample space to steady himself and rifle a powerful low drive from 25 yards past Green to hand the visitors the lead.

West Brom carried the momentum into the second period and although Anton Ferdinand was fortunate to see his chested clearance rebound behind goal and not past Green, the Rs were not as fortunate moments later.

Armand Traore's skyward header from Brunt's corner caused consternation in the box, allowing Marc-Antoine Fortune the time to back into Green on the goal line. As the two players jostled, it was Green's touch as he tried to palm the ball over his bar that saw QPR fall 2-0 down. The hosts felt aggrieved but referee Chris Foy adjudged the tangle to be legal.

As QPR chased the game Harry Redknapp introduced Junior Hoilett and Samba Diakite and although Lukaku trundled through on goal only to be denied by Green once more, it injected new life into the Rs.

Mbia, who had been one of the hosts' better players, found room to slide a ball into Cisse. With the pace just right, the Frenchman did not need to break stride as he lifted his finish over the onrushing Foster to provide QPR with some hope.

Though QPR grew in confidence, the Baggies remained resolute, though they had to rely on a superb save from Foster in the dying stages to prevent Hill's header equalizing.

A seige on the West Brom goal yielded plenty of half-chances but by the final whistle the Midlands side survived, preserving its place in the Premier League's top six.

Reading 0-0 Swansea City: Boxing Day stalemate keeps hosts in bottom three

    242375hp2.jpg

Reading ended a seven-game losing streak as it picked up a 0-0 draw at home to Swansea City on Boxing Day.

It was the Swans who had most of the better chances, Michu somehow missing from six yards in the first half and Nathan Dyer being denied by an excellent Adam Federici save after the break.

But the home side improved as the game wore on and almost nicked a priceless victory when only a headed goal-line clearance from Chico denied Adam Le Fondre.

It was not the result either side would have hoped for, although the hosts move off the bottom of the Premier League table. Swansea remain in mid-table but have now gone four games without a win.

Reading had no fresh injury concerns for the game, with Jason Roberts, Sean Morrison and Alex McCarthy all still out. Ki Sung-Yueng returned to Swansea’s starting XI, although an anticipated return for winger Pablo Hernandez from his thigh injury did not materialize.

Swansea made a bright start to proceedings, but there were no early openings until both side had golden opportunities at either end of the pitch. Pavel Pogrebnyak was played through on goal but lost control at the vital moment to squander the chance.

Then, at the other end, the usually reliable Michu somehow failed to open the scoring with an even better opening. Chris Gunter failed to play the ball back to Federici but as the ball fell at the feet of the Spaniard with the goal gaping from six yards, he somehow fired his shot over the crossbar.

Swansea continued to have comfortably the better of the first half, dominating possession without creating too many clear-cut chances. Nathan Dyer missed the target with two long-range efforts before the halftime whistle was blown with the score still goalless.

The home side started the second half slightly better and Jobi McaNuff missed the target on 54 minutes after the ball deflected into his path after Pogrebnyak took a tumble in the box.

Swansea was unhappy when the big striker escaped with only a booking for making two fouls in a matter of seconds. Reading responded with a double change, taking the Russian off along with McAnuff as Hal Robson-Kanu and Le Fondre came on after an hour.

The visitors were still looking most threatening, though, and only a stunning reaction save from Federici denied Dyer from a close-range header after good work from Wayne Routledge out wide after 65 minutes.

The Royals’ goalkeeper had to get down smartly again to deny Ki before Reading had the ball in the net. The lively Le Fondre rose to divert a free-kick past Michel Vorm but the goal was rightly disallowed and the striker booked for using his hand.

There was a concerning sight for away fans in the latter stages as Michu hobbled off the pitch with what looked like an ankle injury.

Reading almost snatched a late winner, but Chico brilliantly prevented a goal from a sweetly-struck Le Fondre effort.

Everton 2-1 Wigan: Osman and Jagielka sink Wigan

    242376hp2.jpg

LIVERPOOL -- Everton moved up to fourth in the Premier League and sunk Wigan into even more trouble with a 2-1 win at Goodison Park on Boxing Day.

Leon Osman's deflected strike gave the home side the lead early in the second half before Phil Jagielka's header doubled the advantage for a dominant Toffees. Wigan had been second best for much of the match but almost launched a comeback as the tireless Arouna Kone struck late on.

Everton and Wigan both made one change apiece from their last outing, with Johnny Heitinga replaced by Thomas Hitzlsperger for the home side while Franco Di Santo made way for Gary Caldwell in the visitors’ lineup. Darron Gibson featured for the Toffees despite his red card against West Ham due to his hearing with the FA being delayed until Thursday.

The Latics almost rued that fact immediately, as the former Manchester United man crossed for Nikica Jelavic with seconds on the clock only for Victor Anichebe to blast the Croatian’s layoff over the bar.
That chance set the tone for the opening stages, as Everton dominated and went close again when Sylvain Distin failed to get clean contact on Hitzlsperger’s corner, inadvertently deflecting it wide.

Wigan seemed buoyed by its ability to resist that string of attacks but undermined its own chances of carving out a lead with some poor decision making. Arouna Kone and Shaun Maloney worked hard to carry the ball up the pitch but were easily snuffed out due to a lack of support from the midfield.

Despite seeing its grip on the match loosen, Everton still looked the most likely to break the deadlock and went within inches of doing so when Jean Beausejour’s excellent block in the box trickled inches wide of the post.

That chance was as near as either side went before the end of the half and a frustrated Everton was dealt a blow when Gibson was forced off with injury during the break. However, the Toffees quickly recovered, with Hitzlsperger striking the bar with a wonderful left-footed drive from 35 yards out.

David Moyes’ side might have felt unfortunate not to take the lead through such a brilliant strike, but was soon handed a sizable slice of good fortune to make up for it. Osman ducked inside Beasejour far too easily on the right side of the box before releasing a weak, left-footed effort but the Englishman’s strike fooled Al Al-Habsi thanks to a deflection off the hand of Gary Caldwell and landed in the back of the net.

The home side was understandably buoyed after the goal but missed a chance to double the lead when Nikica Jelavic inexplicably dithered on the ball when clean through on goal. Everton was nearly made to pay for that moments later when Osman appeared to fell Maloney in the box but referee Lee Mason waved away claims and was subsequently proven right by replays.

The game had few real chances from then on and it was perhaps inevitable that the next goal would come from a set piece. Phil Neville provided the cross from substitute Bryan Oviedo's short corner and Jagielka rose highest to nod into the top corner.

The Toffees’ dominance appeared to have led them to believe the game was over after that goal, but they were soon given a reminder that Wigan would not lie down as Kone capitalized on poor communication between Baines and Distin to toe the ball home inside the box.

However, Everton held firm against a late fightback to move itself into a Champions League qualification place and heap yet more misery on Wigan.

Fulham 1-1 Southampton: Lambert saves Saints from the spot

    242357hp2.jpg

LONDON -- A late penalty from Rickie Lambert rescued a point for Southampton against relegation rival Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The Saints striker kept his cool to slam high into the net five minutes from time after referee Phil Dowd had pointed to the spot for a handball from Fulham defender Chris Baird.

Fulham thought it was set for all three points after Dimitar Berbatov’s eighth minute strike, but Martin Jol’s side has now recorded just one victory in its last 11 matches and is increasingly being dragged towards the bottom three.

Southampton remains 17th in the table and now faces a season-defining run of games, with four of the next five fixtures against sides in the current top six.

Jol made three changes to the Fulham side that lost 4-0 at Liverpool, bringing Philippe Senderos, Steve Sidwell and Hugo Rodallega into the starting lineup. Southampton made just one change to the side that was beaten by Sunderland as Steven David replaced Emmanuel Mayuka.

Jol would have hammered into his players the importance of the festive period as Fulham looks to escape from a potential relegation fight, and the home side started brightly.

The Cottagers could have taken the lead just three minutes in when, after good work from Rodallega, Sidwell picked up the ball and fired a powerful effort just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

In the eighth minute, Fulham did score the goal that calmed nerves around Craven Cottage. Sascha Riether whipped in a low cross from the right that the Southampton goalkeeper could only palm into the path of Berbatov. The Bulgarian made no mistake in turning the ball into a virtually empty net for his first goal in seven appearances.

He removed his shirt to unveil a message - ‘keep calm and pass me the ball’ - and referee Phil Dowd calmly booked him for the celebration.

Southampton settled down and showed fighting spirit without particularly threatening in the final third. Jack Cork forced a save from Mark Schwarzer with a shot from 25 yards before the break before Nigel Adkins’ started to control large portions of the game after the break.

Jason Puncheon skimmed an attempt wide of the post two minutes after the restart but the Saints struggled to break down Fulham’s stubborn defense.

Twelve minutes from time, the Saints came close to an equalizer but Lambert volleyed a yard over the bar from Luke Shaw’s cross.

Then, Baird stupidly handled as he attempted to clear a corner. Lambert stepped up to slam his spot kick into the top corner.

All of a sudden, the game opened up. Gaston Ramirez forced Schwarzer into action with a dipping strike from 20 yards before Sidwell whipped a curling shot just off target.

Sunderland 1-0 Manchester City: Adam Johnson hits winner to punish former club

Former Manchester City midfielder Adam Johnson upset his former employers by scoring the only goal in Sunderland’s surprise 1-0 win over the Premier League champions.

Johnson’s goal earned the Black Cats a deserved victory, but City goalkeeper Joe Hart will be bitterly disappointed that he was unable to keep his shot out.

City had the first real chance of the game after 10 minutes, when fit-again captain Vincent Kompany headed against the crossbar from a David Silva corner, with Yaya Toure’s subsequent effort scrambled clear by the home defense.

Sunderland was then grateful to in-form goalkeeper Simon Mingolet for denying Spain attacker David Silva after excellent build-up play from Argentine pair Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero.

The former freed Aguero down the left flank, and the ex-Atletico Madrid man reached the byline before finding Silva who connected well on the edge of the six yard box, but he was denied by a superb reflex save from Mingolet.

Next up it was the turn for City keeper Hart to be the hero, as he denied Steven Fletcher as he flew full-stretch to his bottom-right to deny the Scotland striker an opening goal.

A couple of wasted free-kicks aside, that was the nearest the hosts came to scoring in the first half, but just 10 minutes into the second period, they took the lead.

Ex-City midfielder Johnson picked up the ball on the right-hand side of the penalty area and drilled a shot low towards Hart’s near post, which the England man let slip under his out-stretched hand and into the corner of the net.

It was terrible mistake from the usually reliable Hart, but his manager and teammates were furious that a foul on Pablo Zabalata seconds before was not punished by referee Kevin Friend.

From that point on, however, all the pressure was coming from the away side, and it took a fine save from Mingolet from an Aguero drive on the right side of the area to keep the Black Cats in front.

And the Belgium number one was also equal to subsequent efforts from Edin Dzeko and James Milner, before up the other end Hart went someway to redeeming himself with a fine save from Sessegnon after the Benin international was played through one-on-one by substitute Fraizer Campbell.

Sunderland was soaking up City’s pressure well, and trying to hit on the counter-attack. James McClean went close to doubling the lead, but his shot from the left-side of the area was only good enough for the side netting.

And that was the final chance of the game for either side, as City was unable to break through the stubborn wall of Sunderland's defense.
