Van Persie: 'I'm surrounded by champions'

    241913hp2.jpg

Robin van Persie has lauded his Manchester United teammates in the wake of Tuesday's 4-0 win over Wigan, insisting he is "surrounded by champions" at the club.

The Dutch striker scored twice in the victory, with fellow forward Chicharito also grabbing a double at the DW Stadium as the Red Devils maintained their seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

As Sir Alex Ferguson's side looks to bring the title back to Old Trafford, van Persie has hailed the work ethic and "special" quality of his new team.

“This is a special team,” van Persie told MUTV. “Everybody wants to help each other. Everybody's keen for everyone to score. Defenders are working their socks off for the midfielders, the midfielders are working for the strikers... everybody wants to run and everybody has one target in their mind.

“We have to look at it game-by-game, but everybody wants to be champions. I feel that I'm surrounded by champions. They know how to win and that makes it really easy for me.”

The 29-year-old reserved praise in particular for Mexican strike partner Chicharito, who played a key role as Van Persie took his tally to 16 Premier League goals this season.

“[Javier and I] scored two goals each, and he gave a really good pass for my first goal," he added. "It was a good goal because every single touch was the right touch, in my opinion. The first one was a little behind me and I had to drag it onto my left foot. That was a good touch. Then I waited for the guy to slide in, had a good touch inside and then a quick finish. Three touches but all good touches.

“It was a very good performance we scored the goals at the right time. We've played Wigan twice this year and won 4-0 both times, so that's good for goal difference. Everybody's helping each other and everybody wants to share the goals. Look at the last goal – Danny wanted to give the ball to me so I could score. Everybody's like that. I'm like that, Chicha is like that... everybody wants to share the goals and that, in my opinion, is the way to score heaps of goals.

“Hopefully we can keep it going. We’ve had a couple of games where we've had high scores but we want to score even more goals because that could be vital come the end of the season.”

Balotelli set for Manchester City comeback

    242782hp2.jpg

Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli could return to the side for the FA Cup clash with Watford on Saturday, assistant manager David Platt has revealed.

The Italian has been out of action over the festive period through illness, while his agent Mino Raiola has recently insisted his client will remain with the Premier League champion, with Goal.com revealing AC Milan is preparing a bid to sign the former Inter man.

City was hampered by hamstring injury picked up by Sergio Aguero in the 3-0 win over Stoke on New Year's Day which could see him ruled out for a couple of weeks and Yaya Toure played in his last league game before departing for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Platt told reporters: "Mario’s been back on the training pitch for the past two or three days, it looks as if he’s shifted the illness off. He trained this morning.

"The problem Mario had was he was ill, came back, trained, had a relapse with his illness and went back down again.

"It looks as though he’s got past that now and he’s had three days on the training pitch and he’ll have another three days before the game at the weekend so there’s every chance that he’ll be available for selection come the weekend.

“It’s irrelevant whether Yaya disappears or not, the challenge is to keep winning football games.

“We have a squad of players that we’ll have to choose 11 from them and whichever 11 we put on the park we would expect to go and take the points."

Platt was speaking on behalf of Roberto Mancini following City's win over Stoke, a result, and performance, that delighted the former England international.

"[I’m] happy with the result and the performance," he said. "We’ve just got to continue to win football matches. We’ve been producing chances in games over the last month or so, we lamented a bit at Sunderland but fortunately we’re getting our ratios up.

“I think you’ve got to give us credit, we didn’t give any silly fouls away that would’ve enabled them to put dangerous balls into our box.

“We stopped them from having a platform to come forward as well. We got the second and third goals in quick succession which basically killed them.”

Stoke boss Tony Pulis refused to criticize his players, despite slipping to a defeat at the Etihad Stadium, insisting he was satisfied with the work rate displayed by his team.

"No complaints, they were the better team,” he admitted. "Don’t take anything away from City, they’re a good team, they played well today and they were better than us.

"If you ask me what the difference was it’s about £220m, for us to come here we have to bring our ‘A game’ and City have to be off it and that wasn’t the case today.

"But you have to open your eyes and look at the reality of everything and they’ve got a bit of a headstart on clubs like us.

"I’m not going to criticize the players, they’ve worked their socks off. There are certain clubs in this league that are ahead of us, and City are [one of them].

"For us to come and play against them and do well, it’s the same with four or five other clubs, we have to be at our maximum, we weren’t today."

Villas-Boas reiterates Tottenham interest in Leandro Damiao and Willian

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that he is still interested in bringing Shakhtar Dontesk striker Willian and Internacional forward Leandro Damiao to the club. The pair, who both featured for Brazil at international level, were linked with Spurs during the summer, and Villas-Boas has reinstated his admiration for the duo, with the January transfer window now open.

"We contacted Willian and he is one of the players in which we had an interest. I like his style but we could not reach a deal with Shakhtar in the summer," Villas Boas told Lancenet. "Shakhtar are a tough club to negotiate with. They don't need the money, they can keep their players."

Fellaini: I am living in Manchester now, because in Liverpool, the women were crawling for me

    235336hp2.jpg

Everton star Marouane Fellaini has revealed he has been forced to move from Liverpool to Manchester due to his popularity with the women of Merseyside.

The 25-year-old has been in magnificent form this season to help David Moyes’ side mount a meaningful challenge for a Champions League qualifying position in the Premier League.

Fellaini’s goalscoring exploits, not to mention his unmistakable hairstyle, have cemented his position as a Goodison Park cult hero, but the Belgium international admits the attention he now receives from adoring fans has become too much.

“I am living in Manchester now, because in Liverpool, the women were crawling for me," Fellaini said. “It was too much. In Manchester, people don’t recognise me that much and tend to treat me in a more respectful way.

“I don’t want to be a star. I just want to play football.”

Fellaini has missed Everton’s last three games, including Sunday’s damaging defeat against Chelsea, through suspension after his headbutt on Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross, but is due to return against Newcastle on Wednesday.

“Normally I am an honest player but that was just frustration at Stoke,” he said. "Shawcross was pushing and pulling me the whole game and, in the end, I just exploded. But I shouldn’t have, and I’m sorry for what I did.”

The future of the former Standard Liege star has been the subject of intense speculation with the likes of Chelsea reported to be considering a January raid for the powerful midfielder. But Fellaini insists he is happy to honor the contract he signed until 2016.

“I have a contract with Everton until 2016, and, if the club want, I will see that out," he said. "I know I am hot, and I want to move forward one day, but I will finish my Everton contract if they want me to.”

Southampton 1-1 Arsenal: Own goal saves point for frustrated Gunners

    243458hp2.jpg

Southampton held an out of sorts Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at St. Mary's to move out of the relegation zone.

Gaston Ramirez gave the Saints the lead just past the half-hour mark after some abject defending from Arsenal, but Guly do Prado gifted the Gunners an equalizer when he put Theo Walcott's free kick past his own keeper.

Arsene Wenger named an unchanged team from the demolition of Newcastle last time out. Whereas Nigel Adkins made three changes; Steven Davis and Ramirez returned to the side while Artur Boruc made his first start since October.

Boruc made a shaky start to the match and almost handed the Gunners an early lead when he fumbled a routine catch from an Arsenal corner.

The home side, though, was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty when Thomas Vermaelen brought down Maya Yoshida inside the area after 8 minutes.

Ramirez made the breakthrough for Southampton in the 35th minute when he capitalized on some poor defending from the visiting team. Jason Puncheon laid the ball off to the Uruguayan, after mishitting his initial shot, allowing him to sweep past an unsighted Szczesny.

But the Saints were only ahead for seven minutes as Do Prado turned the ball into his own net from a Theo Walcott free kick. The midfielder slid in at the near post but inadvertently put it past a helpless Boruc.

The sides went in level at the break but Southampton had the better of the half and perhaps should have gone in ahead.

Southampton started the second half brightly as well. Do Prado almost made amends from his earlier own-goal with a fine turn and shot to test Szczesny in the 55th minute, but the Gunners' stopper did well to turn his effort past the post.

The Poland international was called upon again from the resulting corner, when the ball struck Sagna on the knee forcing Szczesny into a fine reaction save to keep the visiting team level.

It took 70 minutes before Arsenal managed its first shot on target. Walcott found space down the right side but his low shot was easily kept out by Boruc.

The Saints' reply was instant and should have resulted in a goal. Ramirez's beautifully taken volley was harshly ruled out for a push on an Arsenal defender in the build up.

Arsenal finished the better side, as Mikel Arteta came close with a long range effort in the 80th minute before Gervinho dragged his shot wide of the near post moments later.

But Puncheon almost claimed all three points for the home team when he ended his penetrative run with a fierce shot which was well blocked by Szczesny.

The Gunners had their own chance to win the game when Gibbs was played in behind the Saints' defense but the left back's low cross was cut out by Yoshida.

Angelo Henriquez has joined Wigan on loan from Manchester United

    AngeloHenriquez_2880713.jpg

Wigan have added to their resources up front by signing young Chilean international striker Angelo Henriquez on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season.

And Henriquez is poised to make his Latics debut in the FA Cup third round tie at home to Bournemouth this Saturday.

The 18-year-old arrived at Old Trafford last summer, having signed from Universidad de Chile, and he made his international debut in November, coming off the bench to score Chile's only goal in a 3-1 friendly loss to Serbia.Wigan boss Roberto Martinez said: "We're really excited about Angelo because he is a very young man with huge potential. He's a goal-scorer with clever movement inside the box and had a very successful time with his former club Universidad.

"We hope to have a good partnership in terms of allowing Angelo to develop as a footballer and learn the demands of the English game, because I feel he can bring us something different in the forward line.

"I'm sure the fans will give him a great welcome on Saturday and it will provide him with the perfect opportunity to begin his experiences on the pitch in English football, which is very exciting."And Henriquez added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am really excited the manager has given me this chance to prove myself. Now I need to work to try and earn my place in the team."

He becomes Wigan's second mid-season recruit, the Latics having already confirmed the signing of Honduran midfielder Roger Espinoza, who is waiting to obtain a visa.
