Liverpool have concluded the transfer of England international Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.

The 23-year-old striker had a medical at Melwood last week and completed the formalities on a long-term contract earlier on Wednesday.Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had made Sturridge his priority signing for January, and will be delighted to get the deal done so quickly.

"I am humbled and happy to be here," said Sturridge."Brendan Rodgers said he sees me here for a long time - and I also see myself here for a long time. I've not signed here to play for a couple of years and then move on.

"I've signed to be here for as long as possible. It's a humongous club - for me, one of the biggest in the world - and to have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing."

Sturridge will wear the number 15 shirt at Liverpool, the club have confirmed.

    Chelsea trigger Ba clause

    dembabacelebnewcastlevwestbrom_576x324.jpg

Newcastle United have confirmed Chelsea have been given permission to speak to Demba Ba after meeting the striker’s release clause.
Ba has been withdrawn from the Newcastle squad for Wednesday night’s game against Everton as a result.

A statement on the Magpies’ official website read: “Newcastle United can confirm that Chelsea Football Club has made an official offer for Demba Ba which has triggered the release clause in the player’s contract.“The club has given the player permission to speak to Chelsea FC and therefore he will not be included in the squad for tonight’s game against Everton.”

Chelsea, who have now confirmed the sale of Daniel Sturridge to Liverpool, have been eager to add a further striker to their squad to assist Fernando Torres.

Interim manager Rafa Benitez said on the Blues’ official website on Tuesday that he was keen to rotate in attack as Torres has made more appearances for the club this season than any other outfield player.

Benitez said: “We are trying to manage the team so as soon as I can change Fernando, I have to do it obviously, but I couldn't at Everton because you have to score and he is the centre-forward - but we will try to manage him and do things properly.

“He wants the team winning games so he will understand that is the way and he will accept this. All of the players want to play every game but I think they can understand now that if we want to achieve something important then we have to use the squad. They know that is the way.”

The Premier League's bottom side broke the deadlock when Wright-Phillips fired home from the edge of the area after a corner was only half cleared.
Chelsea, chasing a fifth straight win, dominated throughout but could not break down QPR's packed defence.
Frank Lampard had a goal ruled out for offside and the Blues' best effort saw Julio Cesar deny Fernando Torres.

Liverpool 3-0 Sunderland: Suarez sparkles again for Rodgers’ improving Reds

    243625hp2.jpg

Liverpool produced a dominant display to comfortably beat a desperately disappointing Sunderland side 3-0 at Anfield on Wednesday evening.

The hosts raced into the lead through Raheem Sterling, who produced a fantastic lob to beat Simon Mignolet in the Sunderland goal after racing through to Luis Suarez's fantastic pass.

The Uruguayan forward doubled his side's advantage before the half hour mark after bursting past a cynical challenge from Carlos Cuellar near the touchline, with referee Phil Dowd waving play on, before finishing with aplomb with the outside of his right boot past the goalkeeper.

Some exceptionally poor defending allowed Suarez to find himself in acres of space after latching on to Steven Gerrard's brilliant long pass into feet before calmly slotting home to make it three.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers made two changes to the side that beat QPR last time out, with Andre Wisdom and Lucas coming in for Jose Enrique and Joe Allen.

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill meanwhile made just the one change to the team that lost to Tottenham at home at the weekend, with the injured John O'Shea replaced by Danny Rose.

After a bright opening from the hosts, Stewart Downing forced Mignolet into a fine save at his near post as he tipped the winger's free kick from a promising position outside the area behind for a corner.

They didn't have to wait much longer to take the lead in the 18th minute through Sterling, though, after he latched on to Suarez's looped pass over the back four and coolly lobbed the ball over the onrushing Mignolet.

The visitors should have grabbed an equalizer shortly afterwards following a flowing move involving Steven Fletcher, Stephane Sessegnon which resulted in James McClean screwing his effort well wide with the goal gaping.

They were made to pay for this profligacy in front of goal in the 26th minute when Suarez doubled Liverpool's tally after out-muscling Cuellar wide on the right before driving into the box and slotting home through Mignolet's legs.

With the game becoming increasingly open, Matt Kilgallon wasted an excellent chance at the back post after a superb ball to the back post from Adam Johnson, with Pepe Reina saving well with Steven Fletcher lurking before Downing went close after another breakaway move after a great piece of improvisation from Henderson.

After the break, Suarez once again played Sterling through with a sublime pass around the corner, but Mignolet pulled off a smart stop down low to his right to push the ball away.

With the visitors struggling to get any sort of tempo going, though, after a sustained period of possession, Suarez bagged his second of the game in the 52nd minute after collecting Gerrard's fabulous 50-yard pass before burying the ball into the bottom corner.

It took a flying save from Mignolet to tip Gerrard's deflected volley over the bar, before saving well with his legs to deny Suarez his hat trick moments later.

Glen Johnson and Joe Allen then both saw goals correctly disallowed for offside as the game entered its dying stages and despite carving the visitors open seemingly at will, Liverpool couldn't add to its tally any further, going on to claim all three points with a marvelous team display.

Chelsea 0-1 QPR: Wright-Phillips strikes against former club to earn famous victory

    243656hp2.jpg

Queens Park Rangers stole a shocking win against Chelsea as former Blue Shaun Wright-Phillips scored the only goal of a game dominated by the home side.

The away team barely troubled all night but Benitez's men were unable to capitalize on their possession as, without Eden Hazard and Juan Mata, they struggled to create against a stout QPR defense all game long.

The relegation strugglers managed to make Chelsea pay for its profligacy as, after a corner broke to Wright-Phillips on the edge of the area, the winger made no mistake and fired an effort into the bottom corner.

Rafa Benitez's penchant for squad rotation continued as the manager made five changes from the team that beat Everton 2-1. Marko Marin replaced Ramires to make his first Premier League start of the season, while Ross Turnbull, Ryan Bertrand, Victor Moses and Oscar all also started in place of Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, the visitors also made four changes from the side that succumbed to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at home to Liverpool, as Fabio, Shaun Derry, Esteban Granero and Junior Hoilett replaced Armand Traore, Djibril Cisse, Samba Diakite and Wright-Phillips.

Just three minutes in, Chelsea could count itself lucky to still have 11 players on the pitch after Marin, clearly eager to impress after being awarded a rare start, put in a dangerous challenge on Stephane Mbia. But fortunately for the German, Lee Mason deemed it worthy of just a booking.

The intensity of that opening incident was, however, not often replicated in the remainder of the first half as, with the away side sitting deep and Chelsea without Mata and Hazard, chances were few and far between for either side. The only real chance of the first half came just two minutes before the break as an Oscar shot deflected on its way by Lampard required a smart save from Julio Cesar to keep the first half goalless.

After that fairly tepid start to the game, the opening of the second half brought a welcome increase in tempo as Chelsea began to create clear-cut chances. First, Moses was unable to meet a delightful Marin cross and then minutes later an Ivanovic header from a Marin corner clipped the bar on its way over.

The early second-half onslaught reached its peak with an excellent chance for Fernando Torres. A deflected David Luiz effort fell to the striker ten yards out but the Spaniard could only fire straight at Cesar.

The home side's pressure almost told after 65 minutes as the ball fell to Lampard, who after duly firing into the bottom corner was deemed just offside by the linesman.

As Chelsea was unable to capitalize on its pressure, the second half wore on and, with 10 minutes remaining a rare corner led to a shock opener for the away side. After the corner was cleared at the near post, Taarabt deftly laid the ball into Wright-Phillips' path and the former Chelsea player found the corner of the goal from 25 yards out.

Chelsea's response was frenetic but chances remained hard to come by, the best chance falling to Ivanovic as he headed a Mata cross just over the bar.

    Chelsea complete Ba signing

    dembabawaves_576x324.jpg

Chelsea have signed Newcastle striker Demba Ba on a three-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee.

Ba, 27, has scored 13 Premier League goals already this season leading Chelsea to activate a release clause in his contract reported to be around £7 million and end an 18-month spell at St James’ Park.

The Senegal international will be eligible for Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round-tie with Southampton on Saturday and for the Capital One Cup semi-final against Swansea on Wednesday but will be unable to play in the Europa League having already represented Newcastle in the competition this season.

“It feels good to be here, I'm very happy and very proud,” Ba told the club’s official website. “It was important for me, and for Newcastle, to get my future sorted and now we can move on. Now they have the whole month to buy someone and for me as well, the sooner the better. Now I am here I just need to get settled in.

“When the club who won the Champions League wants you, the decision is very easy. This club is massive and that's something that helped the decision a lot. It was not a hard one.”

Inter Milan announced that its has completed the transfer of Tommaso Rocchi from Lazio for an undisclosed fee, with reports indicating the forward has signed until the summer.

The Nerazzurri were keen to add some more depth to their attack this winter, and head coach Andrea Stramaccioni has now received the reinforcements he was after. The 35-year-old was eager to move on, and he will now be looking to get his career back on track at Inter. The veteran attacker started his professional career at Juventus, but failed to break into the first team at the Turin giants. He also played for clubs such as Pro Patria, Fermana, Saronno, Como and Treviso over the years.

West Ham completes signing of Joe Cole from Liverpool on a free transfer

    226363hp2.jpg

West Ham has completed the signing of Joe Cole from Liverpool on a free transfer, bringing the veteran back to East London. The 31-year-old Cole spent nine years with the Hammers before moving to Chelsea for 6.6 million pounds in 2003.

The England international with 56 caps signed an 18-month contract with his childhood club, where he will hope to rediscover the form that led to him being named Hammer of the Year in 2003.

"It is a great move for me," the London-born midfielder told West Ham's official website. "Coming back here brings back all the memories of the pitches I learnt how to play on. This is where I learnt my trade and I'm happy to have another chance to be here.

"I've always loved West Ham and I hope I can give the club a few memorable seasons. The timing was right for me to come back and I'm happy. I'm back in London and I'm delighted to be here."

Cole played sporadically for the Reds this season after being on loan with French side Lille last season. He had been limited to 10 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool in 2012-13, scoring two goals, and he joins a West Ham side that has fallen to a mid-table position after spending the early months of the season in top form.

"I want to be here and I want to make an impact," Cole said. "The place has not changed much to look at, but I think Sam (Allardyce) has done a great job with the team. A few years ago, the club was in a bad way and Sam has done brilliantly.

"All in all, it will always be West Ham and the history will always be here and everywhere I go around the world, people love West Ham. Everywhere I go, people know me for having started here. Sam didn't have to sell me the club for me to come back. For me, I have had 18 months as Liverpool where I haven't played much football and Sam wants to play me.

"I'm going to need games to get back to my best, but I want to play football and come here and help the team to make an impact. I could see from the outside what a great bunch of lads we have here and there is a great spirit. I'm excited."

Gurpegui: We hope Llorente will help us until the end

    210839hp2.jpg

Athletic Bilbao player Carlos Gurpegui has said that he hopes the Fernando Llorente "saga" will end soon.

The 27-year-old midfielder said he hoped his teammate would remain with the club until the end of his contract in the summer.

“The club have said [that he will stay], at least until somebody pays his release clause. In that respect we are calm," Gurpegui told a press conference on Thursday. "We know that he belongs to Athletic until that day and the only thing that I ask of Fernando until June 30 is that he can be at the highest level and help us score as many goals as possible."

Italian giant Juventus has begun negotiations with the striker who has spent nine seasons at the Liga club.

Llorente had previously rejected a new deal and stated that he would see out the remainder of his contract.

“Hopefully the soap opera is over,” added Gurpegui. "It is good for everybody that there is peace and that together we can only think of Athletic, which is where we are and we all want the best."

Los Leones continue to ask for the payment of the termination clause in the player’s contract which would enable him to leave the club during the winter transfer window.

Lampard's agent denies saying he will leave Chelsea at end of season

    243273hp2.jpg

Frank Lampard's agent has denied saying the Chelsea midfielder will leave the club at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old's contract expires in the summer, and speculation has circulated over whether he will be offered a new deal.

"At this moment, Lampard is exclusively thinking about the present, in other words Chelsea," Steve Kutner was quoted as saying by cittaceleste.it.

"As for the future, the only certainty is that he will change teams at the end of the season."

Later, Kutner denied the interview took place, and said that the quotes surrounding the midfielder's future are false.

Kutner told BBC 5Live that he "hasn't spoken to anybody about Lampard's future and hasn't given any interview about it."

I would walk off the field again even against Real Madrid or Barcelona, says Milan's Niang

AC Milan striker M'Baye Niang has backed his teammates' decision to leave the field of play following racists taunts from the crowd.

The Rossoneri were playing a friendly against regional side Pro Patria when, after just under an hour's play, Kevin Prince-Boateng reacted angrily by kicking the ball into the stands after tiring of repeated racist chanting from a small section of fans.

Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini decided to lead his side from the field and Niang applauded his captain's decision and has warned that he and his teammates would do it again should the need arise.

“We are ready to do this again in Serie A or the Champions League, even if we are playing against Barcelona or Real Madrid,” Niang told Tg1.

“Our captain Massimo Ambrosini did the right thing by taking the team off the field. I’d never seen anything like this in France.”

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has also praised the Milan players for the action taken.

"A great team, a great coach and a great man," Prandelli told Tg1.

"Massimiliano Allegri understood the problem. We are all tired of this. We are all fed up. Milan were fantastic, as all together we can probably manage to ruin the plans of these few people.”
Injured Milan star, Nigel De Jong, was equally impressed by the actions of his side and took to Twitter to applaud them.

"A great gesture today from my mates who supported Boateng in leaving the field of play," he tweeted.

M'Vila open to move after Premier League links

    204677hp2.jpg

Rennes midfielder Yann M'Vila says that "there is no doubt" that he will leave the club if it receives a good offer, following links with a move to the Premier League.

The 22-year-old was strongly linked with a transfer towards the end of last season, with Arsenal and Tottenham thought to be interested at various stages of the summer.

And while there have been no approaches for his services thus far in the January transfer window, the midfielder says he is open to all offers.

"I am at Rennes at the moment so let's see what happens," M'Vila told reporters.

"If the club receives a good offer and I like the destination then I will go, there is no doubt about that.

"Until that happens, nothing can be said."

The French club is currently fourth in Ligue 1 at the halfway stage of the season, with M'Vila playing in 14 of its 19 games so far.

It is totally untrue that Falcao has an agreement with Real Madrid, claims Cerezo

    237947hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has quashed speculation linking Radamel Falcao with a move to Real Madrid.

Falcao's impressive performances this season for the Colcochones has led to many clubs reportedly showing interest in his services, including Los Blancos.

However, Cerezo has made it clear that there is no substance to the suggestions made on Punto Pelota that his star player is set for a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.

"I want to say that it is false that Falcao has an agreement with another team. I say it is false because I have [not] spoken to anyone regarding this subject," Cerezo told Marca.

"It is absolutely false and a lie. It is one thing to joke but it is another to make a something out of nothing. Above everything, I don't like having words put in my mouth that I have never said.

"Like [club general manager] Miguel Angel Gil said, Falcao is our player and he has won the right to make his own decision. He has a contract with us and there is no need to talk nor invent anything else."

Cerezo also spoke of his coach Diego Simeone and revealed that the club is preparing to offer him a new contract but that it will do so with calm and patience.

"The renewal of his contract will be done with tranquility and will occur over the course of the year," he continued.

"There is no date nor day nor place by which it needs to happen. There is no problem and it will happen when it can. We do not know if he has
