Bolton 2-2 Sunderland: Wickham and Gardner secure a replay for Black Cats

    244337hp2.jpg

Connor Wickham made the difference off the bench as Sunderland came back from 2-0 down to earn a third-round replay against Championship side Bolton.

The hosts opened the scoring after a catastrophic error from Carlos Cuellar gifted Chung-Yong lee the opener on 12 minutes, before Marvin Sordell doubled their lead minutes after the break.

However, Sunderland had Connor Wickham to thank for pulling a goal back on the hour mark, before Craig Gardner fired in a long-range equalizer 15 minutes later.

Responding to Bolton’s 1-0 New Years Day defeat at Leeds, Dougie Freedman restored David N’Gog to the starting lineup in place of Kevin Davies, while keeper Adam Bodgan was replaced by Adam Lonergan and midfielder Jay Spearing also dropped to the bench.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill, meanwhile, was without defenders John O'Shea, Wes Brown and skipper Lee Cattermole, but selected an otherwise full-strength side in his bid to give Sunderland a fourth straight win at the Reebok Stadium.

And the omens looked good for the Black Cats early on; Bolton hadn’t won in eight previous meetings against them, while Danny Rose and Aaron McClean began by linking up effectively down the left-hand side.

But the home side quickly shattered Sunderland’s game plan as Chung-Yong Lee pounced on a horrendous pass across his own box from Cuellar to drill home his shot and put Bolton 1-0 up.

The visitors looked shell-shocked but soon established a foothold, although Danny Rose was forced off after pulling a hamstring and was replaced by Jack Colback.

Not for the first time this season, it was the Sunderland wide men who caused the most problems, with McClean making run after run and Adam Johnson coming close with an in-swinging free-kick on the half-hour mark.

Lonergan did well to tip the ball wide but it did not stop Johnson persisting, with the England winger shooting wide again shortly after.

But the visitors could not force an equalizer before half-time and looked more at risk of conceding a second when Titus Bramble ran into Mignolet after 40 minutes before finally heading the ball out for a corner.

And shortly after the break, the visitors failed to clear a corner and Sordell was given space to convert from close-range.

Steven Fletcher led a quick-fire response but was first denied by a fantastic save from Lonergan and then by the referee when he was brought down in the box, appealing for a penalty.

However, the introduction of Wickham soon after swung the pendulum back in Sunderland’s favor and sparked the away side into action.

The 19-year-old pulled Sunderland right back into the tie on the hour mark, beating Lonergan from close-range to make it 2-1.

And 15 minutes later, Bolton failed to clear its lines and Gardner was there to punish them, unleashing a fantastic strike from range that had Lonergan beaten from the moment it left his boot.

It was all Sunderland from thereon in and the visitors almost snatched a winner, but ultimately had to settle for a replay at the Stadium of Light.

QPR 1-1 West Brom: Dramatic late Dyer strike forces replay

    244327hp2.jpg

West Brom forfeited a late lead at Loftus Road against league strugglers QPR as Keiron Dyer’s late goal kept the R’s in the FA Cup.

QPR played extremely competently but Shane Long’s late deflected effort looked to have consigned it to defeat until Dyer grabbed a late equalizer.

Harry Redknapp handed a debut to new signing Tal Ben Haim, lining up at left back, while captain Ji-Sung Park made a long-waited return from injury. DJ Campbell, returning from a loan spell with Ipswich where he scored 10 goals in 17 games, was picked to lead the line.

Steve Clarke made three changes to the side that lost against Fulham on New Year’s Day, with Boaz Myhill deputizing for the rested Ben Foster, 19-year-old George Thorne replacing African Cup of Nations-bound Youssouf Mulumbu, and Shane Long partnering Romelu Lukaku up front.

The home side started the match well, with Esteban Granero, Adel Taarabt, and Park all dropping into pockets of space to receive the ball. There was a measure of authority and confidence about QPR’s play, typified by a back-heel from gritty stalwart Ryan Nelsen.

But for all the Hoops’ slick possession, it was West Brom – looking a threat on the break – which came closest to opening the scoring as Thorne rifled a shot just wide of Julio Cesar’s far post.

As the Baggies grew into the game, and with play hampered by a lengthy stoppage due to an injury to Zoltan Gera, the match – and QPR – began to lose a lot of its early fluidity.

And it was West Brom which relished the increasingly scrappy contest. First Long rushed on to a Lukaku flick-on, stinging the palms of Cesar, before the Belgian picked up the loose ball and fired a low shot into the clutches of QPR’s Brazilian shot-stopper.

Morrison’s influence on the match was growing; first he crossed to the back-post for Lukaku to thump a head towards goal that was well saved by Cesar, before the Chelsea loanee returned the favour, squaring the ball for the Scot who prodded the ball inches wide.

West Brom flew out of the traps after halftime, with Lukaku bursting onto a though-ball and fizzing a shot wide of Cesar’s far post, but QPR was presented with a great opportunity of their own when Park crossed into the box for Campbell who, unmarked, headed over from close range.

Though Granero was withdrawn at the break, replaced by Jay Bothroyd, QPR continued to enjoy a large amount of possession and territory with Park excelling in a deeper role. Despite its superiority, QPR never tested Myhill in the West Brom goal.

West Brom seized the initiative through Thorne; the youngster attempted a shot from range, which rebounded back into his path, before scooping a pass to Long. The Irish forward took a touch and stroked the ball towards goal, with a deflection from Nedum Onuoha wrong-footing Cesar.

But QPR rallied late on, and clung onto its FA Cup hopes when Dyer arrived unmarked at the back post to pass a delicate left-footed shot into the back of the net from a deep cross.

Southampton 1-5 Chelsea: Ba debut double keeps holders marching on

    244336hp2.jpg

FA Cup holder Chelsea came from a goal down against Southampton to progress from the third round of this year's competition with a 5-1 win at St. Mary's.

Rafa Benitez's men bell behind midway in the first-half when Jay Rodriguez beat Ross Turnbull in a one-on-one, but were soon on level terms through a debut goal from Demba Ba.

Just before the break Victor Moses but the visitors ahead and then, soon after, goals from Branislav Ivanovic and a second for Ba confirmed the victory, before a late Frank Lampard penalty put the icing on the cup-cake.

The result will go some way towards making up for a poor defeat at the hands of Premier League bottom-boys QPR on Wednesday.

Ba made his first start for the Blues in one of five changes from the defeat to QPR. Ashley Cole, Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Ramires also returning in a strong line-up. Nigel Akins, meanwhile, rested Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez, bringing in James Ward-Prowse and Jay Rodriguez in his two changes from the Arsenal draw.

After a subdued opening 20 minutes it was the home side that opened the scoring with a decisive breakaway. Jack Cork's venture forward was cut-out but the ball fell to Jason Puncheon who found Rodriguez with a superb first-time through ball, the striker finishing calmly with the Blues' defense nowhere to be seen.

Hazard curled narrowly wide soon after as the visitors came back, but it wasn't long before they were level. Victor Moses, Hazard and Mata were involved in the build-up before Mata lifted the ball over Artur Boruc. The ball was already on its way but Ba was determined to open his Chelsea account, and did so by pipping Steven David to the ball right on the goal-line.

And then, right on the stroke of halftime, with Rafa Benitez's men buoyed and the Saints deflated, Ashley Cole found Moses in a crowed penalty box with the Nigeria international's effort finding its way past Boruc to put the Blues ahead.

Chelsea then pushed on after the break, Mata again the conductor at the heart of the Blues' attack. The Spain international worked himself some space on the left flank with some nice play, before crossing for Ivanovic to head home.

A fourth soon followed and it was Ba who doubled his tally. Ramires started the move by finding Hazard, who then sent a cross into the path of the former Newcastle man who had no trouble in beating Boruc.

A fantastic double save by Blues' keeper Ross Turnbull denied Saints from pulling a goal back, the stopper firstly blocking a Steve De Ridder strike when he looked certain to score before he got up quickly to again save from Steven Davis. Then, at the other end, only the feet of Boruc stopped Ba from heading in for a debut hat trick.

There was time for one more Chelsea goal late on, Frank Lampard coming off the bench to win and take a penalty to bag the Blues' fifth, becoming the joint-second all-time goalscorer at the west London club. Ba will perhaps feel aggrieved he wasn't allowed the kick to try and bag his debut hat trick. Nevertheless it is Chelsea which moves on to the next stage.

Tottenham 3-0 Coventry City: Demspey bags a deuce for dominant Spurs

    244321hp2.jpg

Gareth Bale and Clint Dempsey combined to help Tottenham cruise into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 victory over Coventry.

Dempsey opened the scoring with a simple close range finish from a Gareth Bale flick-on.

Bale doubled the lead, lashing home a deflected Dempsey shot in the penalty area to leave Joe Murphy with little chance of making a save.

And the USA international made it 3-0 in a blistering opening 45 minutes with a looping header from the Welshman’s corner.

Andre Villas-Boas made a handful of changes as Bale was welcomed back after suspension, while Benoit Assou-Ekotto made his long-awaited return from injury and Scott Parker was handed a start.

But Spurs showed no signs of finding it hard to gel and took the lead after just 14 minutes, when Sigurdsson’s curling free kick was nodded on by Bale and poked in by Dempsey at the back post.

Tottenham continued to dominate and went close again through Kyle Naughton, who saw his shot saved by the outstretched palm of Joe Murphy, before Bale flashed a shot across goal after gliding beyond a handful of Coventry players.

The Welsh winger went close again shortly after, taking the ball on his right foot and shooting wide, and Dempsey saw a half-volley blocked en route to goal by Emmanuel Adebayor as the League One side struggled to get to grips with Premier League opposition.

Bale was on target just minutes later though, blasting a deflected Dempsey shot beyond Murphy after the visitors had given the ball away cheaply in their own half.

And Bale and Dempsey combined again for the third goal, as the American rose to meet the winger’s corner at the back post, looping a header over the Coventry defence to hand Spurs a well-deserved advantage going into half time.

Tottenham continued to press for more goals after the interval and went close twice in quick succession.

A low Sigurdsson cross skidded across the six-yard box as Adebayor failed to connect for what would have been an open goal, before Steven Caulker met a Tom Huddlestone free kick but thundered wide.

Caulker would make amends though, blocking a Carl Baker shot as Coventry enjoyed its best spell of the game.

From the resulting corner, Richard Wood tested Brad Friedel with a header, but the American got down low to palm the ball away.

Spurs started to labor and Villas-Boas made a double substitution, replacing Sigurdsson and Scott Parker with Tom Carroll and Mousa Dembele.

And the home side would hold on to keep a clean sheet and book a comfortable path through to the fourth round.

Manchester City 3-0 Watford: Tevez, Barry, and Lopes see hosts progress with ease

Manchester City booked its place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 2-0 win over Watford at the Etihad Stadium.

Goals from Carlos Tevez and Gareth Barry gave the hosts a commanding halftime lead with Fernando Forestieri missing a golden chance for the Hornets.

City bossed the second half but failed to add to their goal tally until deep into injury time when Marcos Lopes bagged a goal on his debut but City's progress was never really under threat from Watford.

Roberto Mancini dropped Mario Balotelli to the bench after their training ground bust-up during the week. Joleon Lescott partnered Vincent Kompany in defense while Tevez came in to partner Edin Dzeko up front. Gianfranco Zola, meanwhile, recalled Matej Vydra and Troy Deeney to his starting line-up.

Watford impressed in the opening stages of the match; Zola's side attacked with freedom and saw two decent shots blocked in the first few minutes but Manchester City soon had the Hornets pegged back into their own half.

The pressure looked to have paid off when Dzeko turned in Kompany's scuffed shot after 20 minutes but the Bosnian's celebrations were cut short by an offside flag.

City was not to be denied for long though as Tevez drove home a free kick five minutes later, the Argentine's blistering shot went straight through Watford's four-man wall leaving Jonathan Bond with little hope of keeping it out.

Costel Pantillimon then had to make a save straight from the restart to keep the hosts ahead as Forestieri beat the offside trap but couldn't find a finish past the City shot-stopper.

Mancini's side didn't threaten much for the rest of the half but managed to double its lead just before the break when Barry ghosted in to the box to nod in James Milner's cross after fine work from David Silva in the 42nd minute.

The second half was very one-sided with Watford rarely enjoying possession in Manchester City's half.

Tevez came close to finding a third for the hosts but missed the ball by inches when he tried to slide in Milner's low ball across the six yard box.

Balotelli came on for Dzeko with 20 minutes to go, suggesting he has buried the hatchet with manager Mancini, and had a fierce shot well saved by Bond.

Deeney had two decent chances as Zola's side made a late push for a goal but the 24-year-old failed to find the target with either effort.

Lopes capped off a great day for City with a debut goal in the closing stages. The young Portuguese calmly dispatched a side-footed finish from close range.

Fulham 1-1 Blackpool: Karagounis keeps Cottagers in the cup

    244279hp2.jpg

A fine effort from Giorgos Karagounis was not enough to earn Fulham a win against Blackpool as a 60th minute strike from Ludovic Sylvestre was enough to consign the Cottagers to a replay against the Championship outfit. After a goalless and relatively chance-free, first half, Sylvestre opened the scoring with a right-footed strike from the edge of the area, as Fulham appealed vehemently, and unsuccessfully, for a handball against Kevin Phillips.

Karagounis spared the Premier League side's blushes with a stunning finish from the edge of the area before Bryan Ruiz almost won it right before the death, only for his header to be cruelly denied by the crossbar.

Jol decided to forgo rotation as he made no changes to the side that beat West Brom 2-1, meaning the Blackpool defense had to contend with the dual threat of Bryan Ruiz and Dimitar Berbatov all afternoon.

Perversely, the Championship outfit was the team that rang the changes, as it brought in Bob Harris, Kevin Phillips, and Nathan Delfouneso with Stephen Crainey, Gary Taylor-Fletcher, and Wes Thomas all departing from the side that drew 0-0 to in-form Hull earlier this week.

After a fairly even, albeit fairly eventless, start, the first clear-cut chance fell to to Blackpool's Thomas Ince; after good work from Chris Basham down the left, the diminutive winger fired at goal from ten yards out but David Stockdale was equal to his effort.

Fulham started to assert themselves on the game with the twenty minute mark approaching, as two chances fell to the Premier League side in quick succession; Bryan Ruiz first forcing a good save from Matt Gilks from a free-kick and Dejagah then spurning a chance after good wingplay from Alex Kacaniklic.

In spite of the Cottager's mounting pressure, the next chance fell again to Thomas Ince, who tested Stockdale with a powerful right-footed effort but, once again, the Fulham goalkeeper produced a good save to keep the tie goalless.

From then on, the game evened out with half-chances falling to either side, Phillips and Briggs missing chances for both teams before the interval.

The second-half carried on much in the same vein up until the 60thminute when, controversially, the away side took the lead. With Fulham still appealing for a handball from Phillips, Delfouneso attacked down the left, cut inside and laid the ball off to Ludovic Sylvestre. The Blackpool midfielder made no mistake in finishing from just outside the area, striking into the bottom corner with zest.
With Fulham struggling to mount a potent response to the goal, Blackpool still seemed more likely to score as Tom Ince very nearly managed to get himself on the end of a dangerous Eardley cross.

It took Fulham until the 80thminute to finally respond accordingly to the one goal deficit, but it did it in some style as Giorgios Karagounis levelled proceedings with a stunning effort. The Greek international picked the ball up on the right flank before cutting on to his left foot and curling a fine finish over the helpless Gilks to cancel out Sylvestre's earlier effort.

Fulham's Premier League status began to tell following the goal as Kieran Richardson went mightily close with a right-footed effort; after cutting in from the left flank, he dragged the ball just wide with five minutes remaining.

Bryan Ruiz went even closer two minutes later as, following a cross from Frei, his stooping header flew past the goalkeeper but was denied by the crossbar as, ultimately, the Cottagers were unable to capitalize on their pressure as they prepared for the imminent replay.

Brighton 2-0 Newcastle: Orlandi and Hoskins stun Magpies

    244239hp2.jpg

Brighton secured its spot in the FA Cup fourth round after beating Newcastle United 2-0, thanks to a goal in either half from Andrea Orlandi and Will Hoskins.

Gus Poyet named a strong looking lineup for the third round tie at the Amex Stadium - with on loan Manchester City man Wayne Bridge starting at left back and highly-rated Craig Mackail-Smith leading the line upfront.

As for the visitors, Alan Pardew made five changes from the team which lost 2-1 at home to Everton earlier in the week - with key men Fabricio Coloccini and Papiss Cisse missing out through injury.

The hosts started brighter than their Premier League opponents and came close to braking the deadlock in the eighth minute when David Lopez got forward well and delivered a cross which was met by the head of Gary Dicker whose effort went dangerously across the face of goal only to be headed to safety by James Perch.

Former Valencia man Lopez continued to cause problems as he pushed forward from his right-back berth, and forced Rob Elliot into a smart save after drilling in another cross with Mackail-Smith ready to pounce.

It took until the mid-way point in the first half for the Magpies to get going and a smart move ended in Mehdi Abeid stinging the gloves of Casper Ankergren in the hosts goal.

The opening goal arrived in the 33rd minute. Gordon Greer played a diagonal ball which Bridge did well to reach before picking out Orlandi in the middle of the box. The chance looked to have got away from the ex-Swansea midfielder but he turned well and hit a firm shot past Elliot.

Falling behind failed to spark Newcastle into life and they continued to struggle to get going, and it was the home side who looked the most threatening and went into the half-time break holding their one-goal advantage.

Magpies boss Pardew made a double change for the start of the second half - bringing on Paul Dummett and Nile Ranger in place of Perch and Abeid as he searched for a way back into the tie.

However, their opponents continued to look the most likely to get strike again - with Orlandi firing over from just outside the box as he looked to double his goal tally.

Ex-Newcastle man Kazenga LuaLua arrived off the bench on the hour mark to greeting from both sets of fans as a replacement for goalscoring hero Orlandi.

Things went from bad to worse for Newcastle in the 63rd minute after they were reduced to ten-men when captain for the day Shola Ameobi was given his second yellow card for a late tackle on Lopez.

Despite playing with a man less Newcastle still posed a threat going forward and almost equalized in the 75th minute. The ball broke loose to Sylvain Marveaux who fired in a powerful effort which Liam Bridcutt did superbly to block.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 87th minute after Hoskins got on the end of a through ball and steadied himself before calmly slotting the ball past Elliot.

Championship side Brighton will be looking forward to see who it draws in the fourth round draw on Sunday, while next up for Newcastle is a Premier League game away to Norwich.

West Ham 2-2 Manchester United: Van Persie to the rescue for Ferguson again

    article-2257558-16C4BAD7000005DC-321_634x407.jpg

Robin van Persie rescued a replay for Manchester United with a dramatic late equalizer in a 2-2 draw with West Ham in the FA Cup third round.

Substitute Van Persie lashed a superb right-footed finish into the bottom corner in added time to force a replay at Old Trafford just when West Ham looked to have booked its place in Sunday’s fourth round draw.

Tom Cleverley swept United ahead in the 23rd minute but Welsh defender Collins had the final say in the third round tie with two almost identical headers, both from crosses delivered by Joe Cole on his return to his boyhood club.

Van Persie’s goal was his 20th of the season in all competitions for United and the Dutchman revelled in the celebrations in front of United’s 5,000 travelling fans after once again saving Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce certainly will have been pleased with the impact made by Joe Cole, who went straight into the starting line-up after re-joining the Hammers from Liverpool during the week, while Manchester United rested van Persie as Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck were paired in attack.

The flavor of the occasion was set by the presence of David Beckham in the stands while rapper Lethal Bizzle performed on stage before kick-off as the Hammers looked to make best use of their home advantage.

It may have fired up the home crowd but the home players started the game at pedestrian pace as United - and Paul Scholes in particular - dominated the early exchanges as it played with slick passing and movement.

West Ham almost broke the deadlock in the 12th minute but Alou Diarra’s header from a corner was cleared off the line by Scholes, before West Ham youngster Daniel Potts made a similar clearance to deny Nemanja Vidic at the other end.

In the 23rd minute, United scored the goal its play deserved. Rafael and Javier Hernandez linked up well before the Mexican squared for Cleverley to sweep a lovely finish into the far corner from 10 yards.

The midfielder’s strike appeared to finally wake up the West Ham players and out of nowhere the hosts drew level four minutes later. Collecting the ball on the left, Joe Cole whipped in a vicious cross and Collins timed his run perfectly to rise high and glance his header into the far corner.

West Ham’s most likely route to goal always looked to be from a set-piece or a cross and it took the lead in the 59th minute with an almost exact copy of the opener. United failed to put any pressure on Joe Cole, who swung in a superb delivery that Collins powerfully headed into the far corner after getting in front of Nemanja Vidic.

United responded by bringing on Robin van Persie as it piled the pressure on West Ham, but the host appeared to be standing firm as the atmosphere reached fever pitch.

Then, as the clock ticked into added time, Giggs played a marvelous pass to van Persie, who took it in his stride and lashed it low and underneath Jussi Jaaskelainen to earn a replay

Lazio president coy over Lampard link

    243274hp2.jpg

Lazio president Claudio Lotito has remained coy over the club's link with Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard but insists his side would be "ready to sign" any player who will improve his squad.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer, and reports have suggested the Serie A club are heavily interested in signing the midfielder.

When questioned on his club's link with Lampard, Lotito replied: "We are ever ready on the market, on all of those players that can enhance the value of our squad.

"I don't say nothing, but in general, what we try to get we reach. We believe we have a squad that can compete with everyone, but if we'll have the opportunity to increase the value of the roster, the club will not say no.

"Anyway the team already has a balanced structure and a good number of substitutes, so there is no lack of players."

Lampard is now joint second with Kerry Dixon in Chelsea's all-time scoring chart with 193 goals following his strike during Saturday's 5-1 victory over Southampton in the FA Cup third round.

Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez has urged the midfielder to break the club's record but admits he is in the dark over any potential contract negotiations.

“I would love to see Frank score 10 more goals this season to break the record," the Spaniard told reporters. “But I do not know about contract talks, but I know there are sometimes conversations between players and their agents. My job is to keep Frank playing well; he is a very good professional.”

Manchester City rocked by Aguero torn hamstring blow

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has confirmed he has suffered a torn hamstring and is currently undergoing specialist treatment in Italy.

The Argentina international picked up the injury during the second half of City's 3-0 victory over Stoke in the Premier League on Tuesday and is now set to be sidelined for approximately four to six weeks with the problem.

"The studies confirmed I have a torn muscle. We have to keep on thinking positive and try to recover in the best way possible" Aguero posted on Twitter. "For that, I've traveled to Italy where a specialist is treating me. I'll keep you up to date in how the injury evolves."

Aguero is likely to miss around five Premier League matches for City, including fixtures against Arsenal next Sunday, and a home tie against Liverpool on February 3.

Roberto Mancini's side is seven points behind Manchester United in the Premier League, while a bust-up between the Italian and Mario Balotelli on Thursday has put the forward's future at Eastlands in doubt.

AC Milan to display anti-racism slogan against Siena

    233527hp2.jpg

AC Milan will be sporting shirts featuring a slogan to showcase its solidarity in the fight against racism, when it hosts Siena at San Siro on Sunday.

The gesture has been taken following the fracas emanating from the club's recent friendly against Pro Patria, where a number of players were the victims of racist abuse from the home crowd, including attacker Kevin-Prince Boateng.

"Tomorrow [Sunday] afternoon during the warmup before the match against Siena, Milan will wear a shirt specially designed for the occasion with an anti-racism slogan," a statement issued by the Milan giants read.

"The initiative has been strongly backed by president Silvio Berlusconi, the club and the team."

Boateng spoke out after the incident suggesting a stronger stand should be taken and his actions have since been praised by other players within the football community.

The 25-year-old has also admitted the racist abuse he suffered has made him Question his Future in Iyaly.

Antonetti: Rennes will accept right offer for M'Vila

    214417hp2.jpg

Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti has revealed the club will not oppose the departure of midfielder Yann M'Vila, provided his suitors were to make the right offer.

The France international remains one of the most sought-after targets in the transfer market despite failing to secure a move to the Premier League last summer, with Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly keen to renew their interest in the new year.

Following M'Vila's recent comments that he would welcome a move, Antonetti has conceded he would be powerless to retain the 22-year-old's services against his will.

"I want to keep him, but if Rennes were to receive a suitable bid then he would leave," he lamented to RMC Sport. "He is better and more mature, and will go. It is part of the club's policy that he will leave if he has to, only, who will replace him?"

The defensive midfielder has made 14 appearances in Ligue 1 so far, helping the team to fourth place.

'I'll be back to my best', vows Joe Cole after West Ham return

Joe Cole has promised to return to his best form, after making his first appearance back at West Ham in Saturday's 2-2 FA Cup draw with Manchester United.

The Upton Park academy graduate assisted both of James Collins' goals in the draw, as the Hammers were denied a win by Robin van Persie's 91st-minute equalizer.

Cole told ITV Sport: "It was a nice return, I didn't like all the fuss and everything, I just wanted to get out there and play football.

"It was nice to get involved and get the minutes under my belt. It's been a long time since I've played properly.

"Like I said, three or four games and I'll be back to my best. It it was a great start on a personal note, but it still feels like a missed opportunity."

The former Liverpool man highlighted the Red Devils' greater quality as being crucial in their comeback, but backed his new teammates to go and grab a good result in the replay at Old Trafford.

"They're a quality side and have done that countless times," Cole continued.

"When you've got world-class players like Van Persie and Giggs, they can combine like that. I thought we defended really well, good concentration, good heart, good discipline and we were unlucky not to win, but it's a good start."

Benitez: Torres and Ba could play together for Chelsea

Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez has insisted that new signing Demba Ba could play alongside Fernando Torres, following forward's two-goal debut display against Southampton.

The Senegal international netted twice in the 5-1 win at St Mary’s, as his £50 million teammate watched on from the bench, but the temporary boss cited Ba’s former partnership with Papiss Cisse at Newcastle as evidence of his ability to work as part of a front two.

The 52-year-old told reporters: "It's always important for a striker to score goals but more than just the goals is the contribution for team and the movement and his understanding of what we wanted to do was really good. He was very clever.

"I prefer this problem than [having] to be careful just with one [striker]. It's important for the team to have these different options. [They're] good players and they can compete, or maybe we can manage them together.

"They could play together, Ba was playing with Cisse last month. They can play because he is a clever player, but it depends on the players around them."

Frank Lampard came off the bench to win, and convert, a late penalty to become the club’s joint-second in the west London club's all-time scoring chart, leaving him ten behind Bobby Tambling.
The midfielder has just six months left to run on his current deal, with speculation pointing towards a summer exit from Stamford Bridge, and Benitez remained coy on the vice-captain’s future.

Benitez added: "Frank is a good professional. He is under contract and doing well. The main thing for me is that you have to bring the best from him."

Saints boss Nigel Adkins, meanwhile, admitted that his side were outplayed by the visitors after the break, but he bemoaned the nature of Chelsea’s equalizer just before the halftime break.

"I thought we started very brightly and got a good goal from Jay Rodriguez," he said. "The big killer blow for us comes just on halftime with the goal they score. It's fair to say in the second half Chelsea demonstrated the good players they've got. I thought they were very good."

Michael Owen in talks over A-League move to Perth Glory

    210433hp2.jpg

Australian A-League side Perth Glory are in talks with Stoke City striker Michael Owen over a potential move.

The 33-year-old signed for Tony Pulis' side on a free transfer in the summer but has yet to make a Premier League start this season. A hamstring injury has hampered the number of opportunities Owen has had to break into Stoke's side, but the striker is now considering a move to the A-League.

"Michael Owen's agent has inquired about Michael playing in the A-League," a Perth Glory spokesman told the West Australian.

"Perth Glory are interested but are yet to find out Michael's terms and conditions. Until these are known, Perth Glory will not enter any further negotiations."

Signing for Chelsea was an easy decision, insists Ba

New Chelsea signing Demba Ba has revealed opting to move to Stamford Bridge was an easy decision to make.

The Senegal international was preparing for Newcastle’s clash against Everton last week when he was made aware of the London club’s offer for him.

Ba has admitted he was eager to join Chelsea because of the club’s size and its squad of "world-class players".

“When you know a club like Chelsea wants you the decision is going to be easy,” he told TalkSport. “With all due respect to Newcastle, because Newcastle is a big club with a big history.

“I woke up on Wednesday and prepared myself to play against Everton, I got a text from the manager to tell me I need to come and see him and from that moment I knew that everything was fixed for me to go.”

Ba made 54 first-team appearances for Newcastle since joining them from West Ham in 2011, scoring 29 times.

“I’m very happy, very pleased to play with these players [at Chelsea].” Ba continued. “They’re world-class players and when you play with them it’s something different, they’re really intelligent in the game.

“I just want to enjoy my football here and that’s what I do.”
