Liverpool playing best football in the Premier League, insists West Brom boss Clarke

    212561hp2.jpg

The Baggies manager and former Reds coach believes the players signed by Kenny Dalglish during his time at Anfield are starting to show their real potential for the club West Brom manager Steve Clarke believes Liverpool are "playing the best football in the Premier League" with the signings made during his time at Anfield.

The former Liverpool coach takes the Baggies to the Merseyside outfit on Monday night - a ground where they triumphed 1-0 last season - in the hope of leapfrogging the Reds into eighth place. And Clarke, who worked under Kenny Dalglish when Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Jose Enrique were recruited, believes every Liverpool player is starting to show their true talent.

He told ESPN: "I'm not surprised now that some of the younger players are starting to flourish [at Liverpool], or some of the more experienced ones that Kenny signed. It can take a period of time for people to settle into a club the size of Liverpool.

"For Stewart Downing to be in the team and Jordan Henderson, as well as Jose Enrique, and doing really well, is good. Luis Suarez has really settled into the club now and, if you look at it at this stage, Liverpool are probably playing the best football in the Premier League.''

And Clarke also praised the influence of Dalglish’s successor at Liverpool, Brendan Rogers, for his tactical nous and positive impact on the current squad.

"I don't think there's anybody in football now who thinks you just turn up at a club and create a good team just because they're a great, historical club," added Clarke.

"You have to work at it. Every club in the league has to work hard to try to put a good team on the pitch and you have to work as hard as you can with your players.

"Brendan went in there with a different philosophy to Kenny but Liverpool have always tried to play good football. Brendan has slightly different ideas that maybe took a little bit of time to get across. But you can see now that the team is starting to gel and maybe starting to play the way Brendan wants them to play.

"They had a difficult start but they have picked up and are doing really well and it's going to be a tough night for us. But hopefully West Brom can get the same result as they did last year at Anfield.”

Giggs tips Manchester United for title as lead over City increases to 12 points

    254251hp2.jpg

The veteran scored in Sunday's 2-0 win over Everton to ensure his record of netting in every Premier League season continues. Ryan Giggs believes Manchester United has too much experience to let its 12-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the Premier League slip.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men conceded an eight-point advantage last season as their rivals secured a last-gasp title win on the final day of the season.
But Giggs, speaking after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Everton, insists the squad has learned from its mistakes of 12 months ago and has urged his teammates to remain focused for the rest of the campaign.

"I think we've got enough experience but never take anything for granted," Giggs told reporters.

"You've just got to keep playing and playing well. The strength of the squad should see us there if everyone stays fit but you never know what happens. We've just got to concentrate and make sure that we do our job.

Giggs grabbed his first Premier League goal of this season in the win over Everton - ensuring that he has now scored at least one goal in the league for the last 23 consecutive seasons.

"Obviously it's an important goal which is the main thing, it set us off and after that we played some good stuff - we had to really against a really good Everton team," Giggs told Sky Sports.

"The main thing was obviously to get the result and the performance wasn't really important but I think we played well."

Arsenal defender Santos 'excited' by Gremio loan move

    217877hp2.jpg

The Brazilian has been allowed to leave Arsenal and return to his homeland after a torrid run of form saw Spaniard Nacho Monreal purchased to cover the injury to Kieran GibbsArsenal left back Andre Santos says he is relishing the prospect of joining Gremio on loan. The Brazilian outfit's executive director Rui Costa revealed on Saturday that the 29-year-old was traveling to Porto Alegre to finalize the terms on the year-long move back to his homeland.

Arsenal has yet to comment on the move but the full back himself indicated a switch was close, with the Premier League outfit able to cut the deal short after six months if it wishesx.

"I have the best expectations," Santos told Lancenet. "[Gremio] are one of the biggest clubs in the country."I've come to Gremio to be a champion. I am very excited about this project. I have dreamed of working with Vanderlei Luxemburgo. He is a top manager in our football."

Santos admitted, though, that he would need time before reaching match fitness after a stop-start season at Arsenal."If there was a game today, I would like to play," he added.

"But I need to be match fit as I played a game one day, then not the next one. I'll need five or six games to be fitter. I'm anxious to know the squad."

Inter 3-1 Chievo: Nerazzurri snap winless streak to move fourth

    254334hp2.jpg

Inter leapfroged city rival AC Milan in Sunday's Serie A evening kickoff, beating Chievo 3-1 at San Siro, which takes Andrea Stramaccioni's men into fourth place in the table.

Goals from Antonio Cassano, Andrea Ranocchia and Diego Milito contributed to Inter's commanding victory, allowing Nerazzurri to capitalize on dropped points over the weekend from Napoli, Lazio and Milan. A solitary goal from Luca Rigoni wasn't enough for the visitors, and without Christian Puggioni in goal, the deficit could have been far larger.

Inside the opening two minutes, Inter grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. Javier Zanetti drove down the right, winning a corner. The resulting set piece was swung towards the back post by Cassano, and after both Andrea Ranocchia and Juan Jesus failed to head home, the ball found its way back to the corner taker. On the half volley, Cassano smashed a drive towards the near post and the ball wriggled its way into the back of the net, following suspect goalkeeping from Chievo's Christian Puggioni, giving the home side a dream start.

The early setback aside, Chievo gave a good account of itself, pressing high and forcing extra men forward at any opportunity. On 12 minutes however, Francesco Acerbi was left with his head in his hands, as the former Milan defender somehow failed to equalize.

The center half found himself in acres of space in the Inter penalty area, following a well-weighted free kick, and seemingly just had to get some firm contact on the ball to turn it home. Such simplicity escaped him, and his deftly flicked header skipped off the turf, going centimeters wide of Samir Handanovic's back post.

On 21 minutes however, the away side was not ruing bad luck anymore. After taking a throw in short and receiving the ball back, left back Bojan Jokic was given too much space, as he was permitted to whip in a near post cross. Chievo captain Luca Rigoni found himself totally unmarked from eight yards out, nodding the ball past the helpless Handanovic, as Inter's defensive frailties reared their head once more.

Esteban Cambiasso almost put the home side back ahead minutes later, as the Argentine drove powerfully through the heart of the Chievo defense, forcing Puggioni to race out and meet him, diverting the ball wide excellently with his outstretched foot.

Inter did indeed manage to poke itself back in front from the resulting corner, though. Cassano whipped in a great delivery once more, and Ranocchia rose highest giving the keeper no chance, heading the ball into Puggioni's top right-hand corner.

Gargano went close in quick succession, the latter from a free kick on 37 minutes, as Chievo conceded a set piece due to handball 25 yards from goal. The Inter midfielder lifted the ball over the wall and sweetly struck the inside of the post, with no teammates in black and blue stripes available to turn the rebound home.

After a sparkling first 45 minutes, everything seemed set in place for Inter to match into the European qualification places at halftime. Offense reigned, opportunities flowed, as the defensive side of the game was willingly neglected.

Merely five minutes after the restart, Diego Milito thumped Inter's third into the back of the net. Cambiasso broke down the right, before picking out Milito with a great pass. The Argentine swiveled elegantly from eight yards out, before thrashing the ball into the bottom corner with his first opportunity of the game. Nagatomo and Cambiasso were denied moments later, but Puggioni was at his best to deny Inter.

After the frantic first half, chances became few and far between after Inter's third goal. Both sides traded half chances, with the best falling to Chievo, as Jokic continued to deliver quality balls into the box from the left.

Stramaccioni's men leave San Siro with their morale sky-high, as the mercilessly put Chievo to the sword, and with the full-time return of Dejan Stankovic and Diego Milito in the offing after injury, the Nerazzurri seem poised to push on in Serie A.

Mourinho talks up Real Madrid-Manchester United clash

The Portuguese has expressed his excitement at the upcoming Champions League fixture while also re-affirming his "fantastic relationship" with counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson Jose Mourinho has described Real Madrid's mouth-watering Champions League clash with Manchester United as "the match the world is waiting for".

United travels to Madrid for the first leg of their last-16 tie in midweek, and the los Blancos boss was seen at Old Trafford to watch the current Premier League leader defeat Everton 2-0 and extend the gap between the club and Manchester City to 12 points at the top of the table.

Despite the attractions of Bayern Munich taking on Arsenal and AC Milan facing off against Barcelona in the same round of the competition, Mourinho believes the tie between his own side and United is the main lure for spectators.

"It is the match the world is waiting for," Mourinho told MUTV. "The world is not waiting for other matches in the Champions League, so I hope we can give the world what they are waiting for."Mourinho and Sir Alex Ferguson are known to enjoy a good relationship and the former, who has won the Champions League on two occasions with both Porto and Inter, was quick to praise his managerial counterpart.

"I feel privileged about that because he is such an important person in the world of football and, more importantly than that, he is good person," Mourinho added. "I have always had a fantastic relationship and I am proud of it. We have had so many matches between us which started with Porto. We had some with Chelsea, Inter and now Real. At all of my clubs I have met Manchester United and Sir Alex.
"Of course, I want to win and he wants to win, but I believe the loser will have a little bit of space to feel a little bit happy because of the friendship, but I want to win."

Gomez: Lewandowski does not worry me

    253927hp2.jpg

The striker has brushed off reports that his position could be under threat if the Borussia Dortmund star arrives at the Allianz Arena Mario Gomez says he has "no fear" over rumors linking Bayern Munich with a move for Robert Lewandowski.

After reports in the media suggested the Bavarians were interested in recruiting the Poland international, Lothar Matthaus then claimed on Saturday that a deal was almost complete.

But on the back of scoring in his side's 4-0 victory over Schalke, Gomez laughed off suggestions he was concerned over the prospect of increased competition for a starting slot.

"I have no fear of anyone," he told reporters. "The club must commit themselves clearly and tell us what's going on. If it is so, then it is so. But it's not my job to comment on speculation.

"I can only say that all the strikers feel very comfortable here in Munich. We will see what happens."

Saturday's win means Bayern is now 15 points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Liverpool 0-2 West Brom: McAuley and Lukaku make Reds pay after Gerrard penalty miss

Liverpool was stunned as a combination of poor finishing and superb goalkeeping from Ben Foster saw West Bromwich Albion come away with a 2-0 win its second consecutive victory at Anfield, a result that surely marks the end of the hosts’ top-four challenge.

Gareth McAuley and Romelu Lukaku put West Brom on the board after Steven Gerrard missed a penalty.

Brendan Rodgers was forced into making one change from the XI that took a point away from Manchester City, with Jonjo Shelvey coming in for the injured Daniel Sturridge while for West Brom, Liam Ridgewell and Yousouff Mulumbu returned to stiffen up the visitors.

The early stages were far from frenetic but as usual it was Suarez who was the first to threaten with a flashed volley that drifted wide of Ben Foster’s right-hand post before Shelvey stroked home a rebound only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

The hosts were in control and could have taken the lead when first a free header from Daniel Agger was tipped over the bar well by Foster before Stewart Downing, an impressive performer throughout, saw a fierce left-footed effort from long-range sting the hands of Foster.

Opportunities for the out-of-form Baggies to break were few and far between with Agger next to threaten on the half-hour mark, failing to make contact with his head despite having the freedom of the West Brom box.

Steven Reid then came close to an embarrassing own goal when he horribly sliced a drilled Shelvey cross that only just cleared the top of his crossbar as the two sides closed out a poor first half on level terms.

The second half began in much the same vein as the first ended with Foster making a sprawling blocked save to deny first Downing and then Gerrard from breaking the deadlock. Minutes later, Jordan Henderson’s improvised back-flick finish brought good reactions from the excellent former England goalkeeper.

On the hour mark Rodgers reacted by bringing on Fabio Borini and youngster Raheem Sterling as he looked to find more of a cutting edge and with just over 20 minutes on the clock, Borini went close to scoring his first Premier League goal for the Merseysiders but again found Foster equal to the effort.

The Baggies again had Foster to thank when the keeper made a super one-handed save from a drilled Gerrard effort, with the follow-up put wide of the post by the onrushing Borini. The best was still to come from the former Manchester United shotstopper when Liverpool was awarded a penalty after Olsson was adjudged to have felled Suarez with 15 minutes to go. Gerrard stepped up but saw his spot kick superbly stopped by a diving Foster.

That miss would come back to haunt the home side when first Mulumbu’s daisy-cutting long-range strike was tipped wide by Pepe Reina before from the resulting corner, McAuley thumped in a header off the bar.

Liverpool was stunned and its misery was complete in stoppage time when substitute Lukaku ran through and slotted past Reina.

Huntelaar winning race to face Galatasaray in Champions League

    238330hp2.jpg

The former Real Madrid striker has been out with an eye injury but hopes to play some part in Schalke's match against Mainz on Saturday before traveling to Istanbul.

Schalke forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has revealed he should be fit to face Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League next week after suffering from a burst blood vessel in his eye.

The Netherlands international was forced to pull out of his national side's match against Italy last Wednesday, but he hopes to be able to play some part against Mainz in the Bundesliga this weekend ahead of the European tie in Turkey.

The striker admitted he faces a race against time to be fit for the domestic fixture, but he revealed his recovery is going well.

"It's not that bad. The recovery will take a bit longer though. It still has to improve. That always takes a while with these kinds of injuries," Huntelaar told Voetbal International. "I would like to get going again. I'll try to be there when we face Mainz on Saturday and play if I can, but it will be tight. It will be a race against the clock."

The 29-year-old scored four goals in the Champions League group stage and has 11 goals in 27 matches across all competitions for Schalke this season.

The 22-year-old joined the Magpies back in Aug. 2011 from Inter and has impressed this season - with his sparkling displays earning him a recall to the Italy national squad.

'QPR has lost its mind' - Anzhi director blasts Rs over Samba's big-money move

    251753hp2.jpg

The defender left the Russian outfit during January, but German Tkachenko says the relegation-threatened side is foolish to be paying the center back such a high wage.

Anzhi Makhachkala director German Tkachenko says QPR has "lost its mind" with its big-money move for Christopher Samba.

Samba signed for the Premier League bottom club side for 14.5 million euros, with boss Harry Redknapp claiming the 28-year-old took a significant wage cut to complete the switch. However, Tkachenko says QPR is paying Samba - who he rates as "one of the top five defenders" in Europe - a similar wage to what he was receiving in Russia, and revealed he cried when leaving for London.

"At QPR he will earn almost as much as he did at Anzhi," he told sports.ru. "In my view QPR have lost their minds.

"Everybody says that he ran away from the club, but that's not true. He didn't put any pressure on the club until we received an offer from QPR for 12.5m pounds, the amount required by his contract. When they agreed to pay his release fee we wept. He wept."

Tkachenko says Samba's move back to England is less surprising given the apparent threat in Russia to the safety of his family, with billionaire Suleyman Kerimov's team based in the volatile region of Dagestan, but hopes he will one day return to the club.

"[The move] was linked to the threat that he would lose contact with his children. That was a big blow," Tkachenko said. "He was a guy who loved all of us. And besides, he is a very good defender. I think he is one of the top five defenders currently playing in Europe.

"If we are successful and playing in the Champions League, I dream that Samba will become an Anzhi player again."

Schmeichel: Mourinho will never manage Manchester United

    245589hp2.jpg

Despite praising the Real Madrid boss' management abilities, the legendary goalkeeper believes the Portuguese coach is too controversial to take over at Old Trafford.Peter Schmeichel believes Jose Mourinho will never take over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United as he attracts controversy.

With Sir Alex Ferguson approaching his 72nd birthday and Mourinho's future at the Bernabeu coming under increased scrutiny after disappointing form in La Liga, speculation is mounting that the Portuguese is eying a role at Old Trafford in the near future.

However, despite retaining a good relationship with the Scot, it is looking increasingly unlikely that the Madrid manager will make the move to Manchester.

The legendary goalkeeper feels 'The Special One' is not the man to provide stability at United, pointing out the short time he has spent at some of Europe's top clubs as evidence of his volatile nature.

"[Mournho] will not be the successor," he told El Mundo. "I don't think the club would be happy with everything Mourinho brings with him.

"He's a great candidate for his qualities as a manager but the club doesn't want all the things that come with him. Chelsea, Inter and now Real Madrid - he doesn't last more than three years."

United faces Madrid at the Bernabeu in the first leg of its last-16 Champions League tie on Wednesday, and Schmeichel is surprised the Spanish side is being touted as the favorite by many given its current domestic form.

"Almost everyone in the world considers Madrid to be favorites - that's strange. We should beat them because we're having a good season," he stated.

Malouda blasts 'petty' Chelsea for first-team exile

    188569hp2.jpg

The 32-year-old left winger was not included in the 25-man first-team squad and has been forced to train with the Under-21s, but insists it only serves to motivate him.Chelsea winger Florent Malouda has branded the club as "petty" for exiling him from the first-team squad - but insists it simply motivates him for the future.

The 32-year-old winger has not featured for the Blues at all this campaign are being left out of the 25-man first-team squad for the 2012-13 season and being forced to train with the Under-21 squad with his contract expiring this summer.

However, while the France international says the club has attempted to make him "break mentally", he is still driven to succeed and will reveal all when he is "free" from the west London side.

"The details I'll explain when I'm free, but the strategy they use is to make me look like a player seeking substantial compensation," he told France-Guyane. "It's petty but more than anything else it makes me smile because it shows how these people regard me."

Malouda has played 149 times for Chelsea, scoring 35 goals, but was frozen out after a move away from the club fell through last summer following a transfer request.

Malouda says he has been able to stay strong and is looking forward to playing again, despite the drastic reduction in his on-pitch minutes.

"If you are excluded for one year, it is very, very long. You must be armed mentally," he added. "All this is done to break me mentally, but in reality it motivates me enormously."

West Brom hero Foster: Liverpool win could be a turning point

    171121hp2.jpg

The Baggies goalkeeper put in a Man of the Match performance against the Reds, saving a penalty and keeping a clean sheet, despite his side being outplayed for most of the match Ben Foster believes West Brom's 2-0 victory over Liverpool is a turning point for the club's season, as the win saw the Baggies leapfrog the Reds to eighth in the Premier League table.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper was the Baggies' star player, keeping a clean sheet and saving a Steven Gerrard penalty, before Gareth McAuley and Romelu Lukaku hit late goals.

West Brom had not won a game in 2013, despite putting in some good performances, and the 29-year-old shotstopper believes the result was a great way to end the club's poor run of form and could prove to be a turning point in their season.

"Today could be a turning point for us," Foster told Sky Sports. "We haven’t had the best of times recently so it was important to get a result today if we could.

"We’re just taking it one game at a time, but we’re obviously pleased with tonight at Anfield.

"It’s great to be back up above Liverpool, we’re not really looking at other teams but after the run we’ve been on it’s a great feeling.

"We needed that [win], we have been on a poor run, performances have been decent. We knew if we kept our performances up we’d always have a chance."

Foster came up big with a diving save on Gerrard's penalty, diving to his left and extending his arm low on the ground after Luis Suarez had controversially earned the spot kick.

"I did know a little bit where Gerrard was going to go [when he took the penalty]," Foster said. "I had a look before the game and knew to go the left hand side, but I also went with my instincts on it. It was an important save at an important time."

McAuley was also delighted with the team's display but believed that the Reds' penalty given against defensive partner Jonas Olsson, should not have been awarded.

"I thought the pen was a bit harsh but he gave it but Ben saved it so that’s great," the said McAuley, whose header off a corner kick gave West Brom the lead. "I’m always delighted to score, it was an important goal at an important time."

The Australian goalkeeper says he is not considering hanging his gloves up any time soon and has entered talks with Fulham in the hope of extending his Craven Cottage stay Mark Schwarzer has entered talks with Fulham over extending his deal at Craven Cottage.

The Australian veteran, who has 104 international caps, is out of contract in the summer but is hopeful of staying with the West London side. The 40-year-old joined Fulham in 2008 after 11 years with Middlesbrough and has been a key member of the squad ever since.

"I feel really good and don't think the age thing is hindering my performance in any way," Schwarzer told The Fulham Chronicle. "I've had some initial discussions, and the intentions are there at the club to keep me."

Schwarzer also insists he wants to remain as a first-choice goalkeeper in order to secure his spot in the Socceroos squad in next year's World Cup in Brazil.

"I want to be playing each week - that's key for me," Schwarzer said. "I love playing and don't want to be No. 2 anywhere.

"The World Cup is also a huge priority, and the reality is if I am not playing I don't think it would be possible to be a part of the national team.

"I just want to be out there and enjoy every minute - especially at this stage of my career. If that means I have to move on at the end of the season, then that's fine also. Let's just see how we go."
