Manchester United - Real Madrid not all about Ronaldo, claims Evans

    209296hp2.jpg

The Red Devils center back believes there is more to Los Blancos than the Portugal star and that both clubs have a lot of expectations to live up to ahead of their clash this week Jonny Evans claims that Manchester United's game against Real Madrid is not all about Cristiano Ronaldo facing his former club.

The Northern Ireland international believes that the clash is the highlight of the round due to the history between the two clubs and not just the Portuguese star.

"I am sure one or two of the lads have kept in contact and Nani was on international duty with him," Evans told the club's official website. "I don't know if he has spoken to anyone, but I am sure he is looking forward to the game as much as we are.

"But I don't think it is just about Cristiano Ronaldo. It goes back further. There is the history of the two clubs. It is the glamor tie of the round. Everyone is looking forward to it."

Evans also warned that despite boasting Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho's side contains several other players who could damage the Red Devils on Wednesday.

"They don't just have Cristiano Ronaldo who can hurt you," Evans said. "They have a lot of different players who can cause you problems. He will be the one everyone will be looking to as the man to stop and we have to make sure we keep him quiet."

Evans did take the time to hail Ronaldo's improvement since leaving United, even though the Madrid star won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2008, when he was with the Manchester outfit.

"Cristiano has changed his game. He has adapted," Evans added. "When he was playing here, he was a right or left winger and expected to work back a lot. That was the way we played. I don't think Real Madrid play like that. He has adapted his game to suit them."

Neymar denies talking with Dante about Bayern Munich move

    253183hp2.jpg

The defender revealed he and the Santos star had held a conversation about what playing for the Bundesliga club is like, but the 21-year-old has contradicted his claim Neymar has denied talking to Brazil teammate Dante about playing for Bayern Munich.

The Santos starlet has been linked with a move to Europe for the past two years, with Barcelona and Real Madrid believed to be interested in signing the attacker, though he recently admitted he could see himself at the Bundesliga side.

After Brazil's 2-1 defeat to England, Dante had revealed that the Selecao forward had asked what life is like at the Bavarian side, but Neymar has denied having that conversation.

When asked about the claims by Kicker, Neymar responded: "No, no, we have not spoken."

Dante has secured a permanent first team spot in the Bayern defense after moving from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2012.

Neymar, on the other hand, has a contract with Santos until 2014, and is widely expected to leave the South American side following the 2014 World Cup.

Valencia 1-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Ibrahimovic red mars impressive win

Paris Saint-Germain edged towards the Champions League quarterfinal with a 2-1 victory against Valencia in the first leg of their round of 16 tie at the Mestalla on Tuesday.

A nightmare display from goalkeeper Guaita saw the hosts concede two eminently preventable goals from Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore in the first half as Ernesto Valverde's side, despite seeing the majority of the ball, failed to make many significant inroads in the attacking third.

PSG took further control of the game in the second half and in truth, should have won by a much larger margin after spurning a hatful of chances, and its profligacy would come back to haunt the French club as Adil Rami converted a potentially priceless stoppage-time goal.

And the Ligue 1 outfit would end the game in a complete shambles, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw an even later red card for a reckless challenge, ruling him out of a now finely poised second leg in Paris in three weeks.

Valverde fielded Jonas from the start on the left flank while for the visitors, Mamadou Sakho deputized for the injured Thiago Silva in defense, with January signing Lucas Moura making his Champions League debut ahead of Jeremy Menez.PSG was unlucky not to be ahead nine minutes in when Lucas Moura cracked a long-range effort off the inside of the post. But with its next attack, the Ligue 1 side would take the lead through a goal that owed as much to Lavezzi’s brilliance as it did to Guaita’s blunder.

The Argentine did fantastically play a one-two with Pastore and dribble past Ricardo Costa, but his shot from the right side, though powerful, should have been met by Guaita, instead of flying straight through his hands.PSG was certainly the better side throughout the first half as Valencia, despite holding the majority of possession, could not make it count in the attacking third as it failed to seriously test Salvatore Sirigu.

Guaita was a bundle of nerves in the hosts’ goal, and did not look comfortable handling a curled effort from Lavezzi with 38 minutes gone. And moments before halftime, the Valencia keeper embarrassed himself with another howler.Lucas beast Andres Guardado expertly on the flanks and cut back to Pastore at the top of the box. Again, Guaita should have at least made contact, but instead let the ball ricochet through his legs and into the back of the net.

The chances continued to fall PSG’s way in the second half. Guaita’s poor parry saw Lavezzi miss from point blank range, before the Argentine again fluffed his lines from in close, firing straight into the Valencia keeper’s arms from Marco Veratti’s feed.

Ibrahimovic narrowly missed poking home a one-two with Lavezzi, and Clement Chantome had a goal ruled out for offside before finally, with the game entering its closing stages, Valencia managed its best chance.Tino Costa’s diagonal ball picked out Nelson Valdez in the area, who did well to evade the attention of Alex, but blasted into the side netting from a position where he really should have hit the target.

But just when all seemed lost, Valencia surged back into the tie as Rami struck from Costa's free kick in injury time before, with one of the last kicks of the match, Ibrahimovic was given his marching orders for a poor challenge on Guardado, leaving all to play for in the second leg.

Celtic 0-3 Juventus: Italian champions a class apart in Glasgow

Juventus has one foot in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after recording a 3-0 victory over Celtic in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash in Glasgow.

Alessandro Matri opened the scoring with less than three minutes played, and Claudio Marchisio and Mirko Vucinic gave the hosts a steep mountain to climb in the second leg with two late strikes to account for the goals.

Having already beaten Barcelona, the Bhoys went into the game quietly confident of toppling another European giant; however, the hosts were left reeling after less than three minutes of action.

Efe Ambrose, who had only just returned from African Cup of Nations duty with Nigeria on the morning of the game, appeared to be suffering the effects of a long-haul flight when he made a mess of an attempted header back to Fraser Forster. That allowed the in-form Matri to steal in and lift the ball over the advancing keeper for a crucial away goal for the Bianconeri.

The scrambling Kelvin Wilson looked to have pulled off a remarkable last-ditch clearance, but replays showed that the ball had crossed the line. Even if Wilson's clearance had stood, Marchisio had put the issue beyond all doubt by calmly burying the rebound.

The concession of such an early away goal undoubtedly came as a hammer blow for Celtic, but the hosts quickly cleared their heads and set about hammering away at the Juventus goal. Buffon was twice called into action to deal with well-struck drives from Victor Wanyama and Kris Commons, before the latter volleyed over when well placed in the middle of the box.

Juve was struggling to exert its customary control over the middle of the park, with Andrea Pirlo growing increasingly frustrated by the roughhouse treatment he was receiving from Scott Brown, in particular. After becoming embroiled in an unsightly outbreak of handbags, the peerless playmaker began to express himself in a far more positive fashion, prising open the Celtic defense with a sublime throughball. Vucinic managed to get on the end of pass, but the Montenegrin’s first touch forced him too far wide and the chance to double Juve’s lead passed.

The home side did its best to sustain the frenetic pace it had set in the first half, but the Bianconeri stubbornly refused to break. Ambrose had a glorious opportunity to atone for his earlier error on the hour mark but he hit an unmarked header from close range straight at a grateful Buffon.

The visitors, as a consequence, became increasingly adventurous the longer the game wore on and Marchisio doubled Juve's advantage with just more than 15 minutes remaining. The midfielder fired past Forster after turning sharply inside Scott Brown.

The Serie A champions then put the game - and effectively the tie - out of reach when Marchisio slipped Vucinic through to score a third goal with just seven minutes to go, thus killing what little fight Celtic had left in them. The Bhoys must overturn the three-goal deficit in Turin during the return leg or else their Champions League run will come to an end.

Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris eyeing victory against former club Lyon

    216870hp2.jpg

The 26-year-old departed the Ligue 1 giant last summer to join Spurs and is looking forward to facing his old teammates when the two sides meet in the UEFA Europa League.Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris insists that he will be focused entirely on winning when he faces his former club Lyon in the first knockout round of the UEFA Europa League.

The Frenchman spent four years with the Ligue 1 outfit before departing for North London last summer but is set for a reunion with his old teammates in Thursday's Round of 32 first-leg clash at White Hart Lane.

Lloris says that despite still having a number of close friends on the French side, he stressed that he will give his all to try to help his current club progress.

"I received a lot of calls and messages! I have a lot of friends there still," Lloris told Spurs' official website. "It's not easy for me because I have a good relationship with all my ex-teammates, but that is football, that is the life. On the pitch there are no friends. We play for our team and give all the best for our team.

"The objective is to be in the next round. We have ambition in this competition – we want to win."

Klopp: Guardiola will find it tougher at Bayern Munich

The 45-year-old believes having the world's best players meant the former Barcelona coach's job was easier at Camp Nou, while likening his side to the Liga leaders Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp says Pep Guardiola will not find things as easy at Bayern Munich as he did in his time at Barcelona.

The 45-year-old will go head-to-head with the former Blaugrana boss when he takes over at the Allianz Arena ahead of next season, but Klopp believes he must now prove he can work with lesser players before he can be judged.

"Most impressive is how Barca play in attack. [Lionel] Messi scores and shouts for joy as if it is the first time," Klopp told El Pais. "Xavi gets every ball like it were the first of his life. And you get the feeling that he would take the ball and caress it and just keep playing. The same with [Andres] Iniesta. [Sergio] Busquets anticipates in midfield, responsible for the work.
"[Carles] Puyol is incredible, a shocking hairstyle but a super player, a human being first, with a big heart. He breaks his elbow and is back playing in two weeks.
"With that motivation they fight for victory. That is a model. I read an interview with Xavi. They asked if he wanted to coach and he said ‘I am not in such a hurry, let me enjoy my playing days.’"And you think ‘You have played football every other day for 20 years and you still want to continue?' That says it all about the game, but also about Xavi.

"They are the best in the world. And that was prompted by Pep, that is clear. He did an excellent job.

"But he will not always have players like that at every club and he knows it. Now he has to teach us how to do it when the players are somewhat less good."

Klopp is one of a number of coaches who have been tipped to replace Jose Mourinho when he leaves Real Madrid, but he revealed his belief that his Dortmund side is more similar to Barcelona than its Liga rivals.

"We’re closer to Barca for the pressure. For the high defense," Klopp said."Everyone wants to play like Barcelona, but it is not possible. Barca could not do it without Xavi, Iniesta and Messi. But their defensive plan is perfect. "Maybe that’s also the problem for [Jose] Mourinho - that although he has thought a lot more defensively, they have been years without signing a defender, because no-one is interested in who plays at the back.

"We want to be very, very fast with the mind and the legs. Everything at full speed. There is no defending against what you do quickly and accurately."

Ancelotti fumes at 'unfair' Ibrahimovic red card

The Italian boss was unhappy after the full-time whistle at Estadio Mestalla, despite watching his side emerge with a vital victory.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti vented his frustration following his side's 2-1 UEFA Champions League win against Valencia, after a late goal for the hosts and a red card for Zlatan Ibrahimovic ended the night on a sour note.

Goals from Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore had put the visitors in a commanding lead, but a stoppage-time strike from Adil Rami and the dismissal of the Sweden striker gives the Spanish side hope ahead of the second leg.

"Ibrahimovic's red card was not deserved. I don't understand it. It's unfair," Ancelotti told Canal+. "We conceded a goal and Ibrahimovic got a red card, and I don't think that he deserved it because it was a normal tackle. And so, because of this, we are really disappointed because the play was really good, we played really well, focused on the game, and for this we have to be happy but the end of the game was not good for us.

"I think it was a normal tackle, nothing special, I was surprised to see a red card."

The Italian boss also admitted that his side could not afford to fall victim to complacency when Valencia visits Parc des Princes in the second leg of their Round of 16 tie.

"Valencia are a good team and we have to know that we have played just the first half of this game, and we have to play the second half at home," Ancelotti added. "It will be better for us, but we have to pay attention."

The Ligue 1 club's director, Leonardo, also gave his view on the late dismissal of Ibrahimovic and suggested the red card was as a result of a pre-meditated view of his character on behalf of officials.

"Ibrahimovic's red card was a bit severe," Leonardo told beIN Sport. "It was because of his reputation."

Walcott confident Arsenal will finish in the top four

    253857hp2.jpg

The 23-year-old winger says that the Gunners are hopeful of securing Champions League qualification after a confidence-boosting away win against Sunderland on Saturday Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is confident that the Gunners can secure a top-four finish in the Premier League this season.

The Emirates Stadium outfit currently lies in fifth place, just four points behind fierce north London rival Tottenham, and has picked up 10 points from a possible 12 in its last four league games.

"We're very confident [of finishing in the top four]," Walcott told the club’s official website. "We can battle through any sort of situation. The teams around us are winning as well but we've just got to make sure we look after ourselves and try to win as often as we can."

Arsenal ground out an invaluable 1-0 win away at Sunderland on Saturday and Walcott believes that the confidence gained from the victory, plus the chance to rest players in the FA Cup against Blackburn, can propel the Gunners towards Champions League qualification.

"It was an important win; the three points have us on a high and we've got a nice week now without any midweek game," the 23-year-old continued. "A lot of players are back from international duty and need a bit of a break. Some may be rested for the FA Cup game but that's just as important as we want to go far in that competition. If we lost [at Sunderland], we would have been dwelling on it for so long, so I'm glad we didn't.

"We'll see where we are at the end of the season but we've got to show the belief we did at Sunderland. I felt there were a lot of winners in that dressing room and the boys were fantastic."

Celtic boss Lennon slams 'pro-Juventus' referee

The Hoops manager was critical of official Alberto Undiano Mallenco, believing he should have awarded at least two penalties to the home side as it slumped to a 3-0 defeat.Celtic manager Neil Lennon has described referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco's performance as "pro-Juventus" following his side's 3-0 defeat to the Italians champion in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg matchup.

Lennon insisted the Hoops were denied two clear penalties for grappling in the box as they were ruthlessly swept aside by Antonio Conte's men at Parkhead.

"I thought [the referee] was poor," Lennon told reporters. "I thought he was very pro-Juventus. I was disappointed with his performance to say the least."Every time one of my players was moving or trying to lose his man he was fouled, time and time again. He should have given a penalty on at least two occasions for us."

Lennon went on to claim his side deserved more, and he lamented the performance of defender Efe Ambrose, who was risked upon his return from a victorious Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Nigeria.

"I think the scoreline flatters Juventus. I thought for the best part of the game, 70-odd minutes up until the second goal we were by far the better side - but we can't give away the goals we gave away. It was sloppy," Lennon said. "We took a gamble [on Ambrose], I thought he was poor for the first goal, but we had a great opportunity to equalize and we had some great chances to be fair. We played ever so well for long periods of the game, and we switched off defensively for the second goal and the third goal was poor.

Lennon remained realistic about his side's chances of progression to the quarterfinals considering the hill to climb at Juventus Stadium in the return leg.

"We'll need a miracle. It’s the harsh reality of Champions League football," Lennon said. "Some of our young players will have learned a lot tonight."

    Zidane: Beckham is class

    254890hp2.jpg

The France icon has lauded his former Real Madrid teammate's professionalism and hunger for the game as he embarks on another European adventure at the age of 37.Real Madrid and France legend Zinedine Zidane has paid tribute to David Beckham as his former teammate prepares for a spell with Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Manchester United midfielder and England captain is due to start working with Les Parisiens on Wednesday, and Zidane has lauded him for his professionalism and longevity in the sport.

"Beckham is someone who comes 45 minutes early to training and leaves a half an hour after everyone has left," Zidane told Canal+. "He is truly a great professional. Some players today could benefit from his level of professionalism.

"Now he 37-years-old, he does not play every game for 90 minutes, but is still capable of influencing any match in the 20 or 30 minutes he has. This is a man who loves the sport. At the age of 37, his passion is still there. The guy is class."

PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed Beckham could make his debut against PSG rivals Marseille later this month. The two-time MLS Cup winner met his new teammates prior to Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Valencia in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Benitez: Europa League will not affect Chelsea's domestic form

    243648hp2.jpg

The Blues, who dropped into Europe's second-tier competition after an unsuccessful defense of their Champions League title, face Sparta Prague on Thursday eveningChelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez insists that his side's Europa League campaign will not impact negatively on their domestic form.

The Blues take on Sparta Prague on Thursday evening in the last 32 of Europe's second-tier competition, having dropped into the tournament as a result of an unsuccessful defense of their Champions League title.

But, despite the west London club's recent poor league form meaning their place in the top four is far from assured, Benitez says that he will take the competition seriously.

"In terms of flights and games it's like the Champions League," he told ESPN. "In terms of mentality the first thought is, 'hmm, it's different.' But if you look at the teams in the Europa League you will see that it could be quite difficult. We have to start thinking about it as a great competition with good teams and that we want to do our best.

"Thursday-Sunday is fine, because in the Champions League it was sometimes Wednesday-Saturday. The most important thing is in the players' heads. In England there is a tradition of playing on Saturday. But in Spain I won the Uefa Cup with Valencia playing on Thursday and Sunday, which was just the same. We can manage if we have enough bodies.

"I expect them to be focused and to concentrate, they will realize that it's Europe and they must give 100 percent."

Tottenham keeper Lloris confident of top-four finish but wary of tough fixture list

    245892hp2.jpg

With games against six of the current top nine-placed sides lined up over the next two months, the summer signing has urged focus after last season's collapse from third spot

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is confident the club can achieve a top-four finish in the Premier League season, but notes the real test of the team's credentials is yet to come.Spurs have remained contenders for the spot throughout the campaign, jostling for position with Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

And Lloris is adamant the squad has enough quality to see the job through, but is aware of last year’s collapse as Arsenal overturned a 10-point deficit to pip Spurs to third spot.

"The club has been trying to establish itself in the top four for some years now," he told The Sun. "For the minute, the season has been promising, but the hardest part is yet to come.

He added, "Today, there’s United, City and Chelsea who are a cut above and who have more financial means. But Tottenham are just behind.”

Tottenham has a potentially problematic run of Premier League fixtures over the coming two months as they play six of the current top nine-placed sides before the end of April, and Lloris is hoping to build up a head of steam to keep their fourth-spot rivals at bay.

"There are still a number of key matches to be played and we’ll have to be ready for that," Lloris said. "For the moment, we’re well-placed, though we’re not beyond a possible charge by Arsenal."

Keeping Ronaldo quiet will be tough, admits Rooney

The Manchester United forward insists his teammates must be at their best in order to stop the Portugal international but admits Real Madrid pose a threat from all area Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney admits it will difficult to contain Cristiano Ronaldo on Wednesday evening and has warned his teammates of Real Madrid‘s threat from all areas.

The Portugal international, who has netted 10 goals in his last six games, faces his former club for the first time as Los Blancos host Sir Alex Ferguson's men at the Bernabeu in the last 16 of the Champions League.Rooney believes Ronaldo, along with Lionel Messi, are the two best players in world football at the moment, but the England international insists the Madrid star needs to be shackled if United are to get a positive result in Spain.

"I played with Cristiano for a number of years and he’s a fantastic player, him and Lionel Messi are the two stand out players in football today," Rooney told GiveMeFootball.

"He’s certainly the biggest threat for Real Madrid. He’s an incredible talent and it will be tough to try and keep him quiet, and I’m sure if we can do that it’ll give us a better chance of getting the result we want."

Rooney also pointed to Madrid's other players who could trouble United and admits his teammates must be at their best in order to overcome Jose Mourinho's side.

"Madrid have got a fantastic squad and great players all over the pitch so it’s going to be a very tough game," Rooney said.

"Players like Alonso, Ozil and Benzema are all top, game-changing players who can punish you in different ways so we need to be ready and make sure we are at the top of our game."

De Gea has improved, insists Ferguson

The 22-year-old was partly blamed after the club dropped valuable points in their failed Premier League title challenge last season, but his manager has backed him to succee Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has backed under-fire David de Gea, with the goalkeeper struggling for consistency since joining the club in 2011.

"David has shown his character because he has taken a lot of criticism, sometimes unfairly," Sir Alex told reporters.

The 22-year-old had the blame laid at his feet after the club dropped valuable points in their failed Premier League title challenge last season - losing his place to second-choice Anders Lindegaard in the process.

But De Gea, who joined the club from Atletico Madrid, is now set to for his fiercest challenge yet in the form of Real Madrid and his manager has praised the youngster’s progression this campaign.

"Of course when you arrive at a new club it is normal there will be low points," Ferguson said. "The important thing is to learn from them and improve. I know I am much better than when I first arrived at Manchester United.
He added, "What we are good at is developing people. He came to us as a very young man, not used to the English game and unable to speak the language.

"Also he was still to mature physically. But it's like a young kid taking his first steps forward, he wobbles, then gets up, wobbles, then gets up again and eventually he walks. The boy is walking now."

The Portugal international faces his former club for the first time on Wednesday evening as Jose Mourinho's side hosts Sir Alex Ferguson's men at the Bernabeu in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Earlier this season, speculation grew over the 28-year-old's future in Spain after he claimed he was unhappy but the Madrid ace has ruled out a future move to United's arch rival.

"To play for City not United? I’m not going to do that. Why? Because my heart’s in Manchester United, that’s why," Ronaldo told The Sun. "I can say it would be very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very difficult to play at Manchester City. Very difficult because of Manchester United."

Ronaldo has reiterated his desire to remain with the Spanish giant beyond the end of the season but also hints that he would be open to a return to Old Trafford in the future.

"I am a player of Real Madrid and I’m happy here, my family is happy and everything is going well for me here. The future? I don’t know — only God knows the future," Ronaldo said. "I can’t say I’m never going back to Man United — but I can say I’m good here and I want to be here.

"Let’s leave it at that and see what God gives me in the future — but I repeat I am happy here at Madrid."

The holding midfielder is dreaming of next year's tournament in Brazil, and is optimistic about Leverkusen's chances at success.

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender has set his sights on a spot in Germany's squad for the 2014 World Cup.

The 23-year-old made his debut for the Nationalelf in Sept. 2011, and was part of the team that made it to the semifinals at Euro 2012.

"Once you’ve experienced what it’s like at a big tournament, you want more. The World Cup is as big as it gets for a footballer and I want to experience it first hand," Bender told FIFA.com. "Up until the World Cup I need to play well for my club in order to even be considered for the national team. I’ve still got a long way to go, which is why I’m focusing fully on tasks that lie ahead."

Bender then went on to discuss Leverkusen's chances at silverware this term, and stressed that the club has the quality to have a successful season.

"We’ve shown for a long time what we’re capable of doing. We have a squad that can fight for titles."

Leverkusen currently sits third in the Bundesliga table, and is among the remaining 32 teams in the Europa League.
