Demichelis still haunted by Champions League nightmare

    270786hp2.jpg

The defender has revealed it will be tough to recover from the dramatic defeat to Borussia Dortmund, but hopes the Liga side is remembered for its efforts this season Martin Demichelis says he is still haunted by memories of Malaga's dramatic Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The Andalusians looked set to record an impressive 2-1 triumph at Signal Iduna Park and progress to the semifinals of the competition, only for two goals in injury time to deny them the chance to face Real Madrid in the last four.

Demichelis has revealed that memories of the night in Germany are difficult to dispel, but is hopeful that Manuel Pellegrini's side will be remembered by football fans for its impressive maiden campaign in the competition.

"The game was over a month ago, but those last five minutes have played over in my head about 20 times," he told Marca. "There are nights where images and memories from that night still appear to me. The silence of 65,000 German fans, and all the people of Malaga cheering and celebrating.

"It's difficult to find an explanation. There's never going to be one, because of the images and the pain. It's not an injury, but a scar. I cannot accept it and I cannot allow it to remain in the past, because I am very self-critical. I still keep playing that game in my head.

"I have a sense of sadness, panic or whatever you want to call it, but you have to stay with the pride at the memory of this Malaga and their fans who faced all rivals and obstacles, who surprised players, coaches and fans across Europe and the world."

The shadow of a European ban and financial problems looming over the club means an exodus of top talent is expected at the club this summer, but Demichelis insists he has made no decision over his future as yet - although he admitted the future of the coach could play a part.

"I did not make any decision. It is best to take it at the end of the season, so I can do my best possible and because if I do choose to stay I can play in the Champions league or Europa League and, if not, I can say goodbye in the best way possible," he added.

"It would be a great motivation if Manuel Pellegrini stays. The first thing you have to do here if you want to achieve important things is to retain the coach."

Bartomeu: Barcelona does not want to sell Valdes

    268805hp2.jpg

The club's vice-president is hoping the goalkeeper changes his mind following his decision not to renew his contract at Camp Nou Josep Maria Bartomeu has revealed that Barcelona has no intention of selling Victor Valdes in the summer.Valdes, who has spent his entire career at Camp Nou, turned down the opportunity to renew his current contract in January, and announced his intention to leave the club when his deal expires in 2014.

The news is rumored to have attracted interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain expressing an interest in the player’s signature.

But the club's vice-president has revealed the Liga leaders do not wish to sell the Spain international in the summer and, if the keeper changes his mind, they will encourage him to stay.He told Catalunya Radio: "We have been in contact with Valdes to make it very clear that the doors are still open to him staying at the club.

"Because we prioritize footballing matters, we’d rather keep Valdes until the end of the 2014 season than sell him this summer.

"We don’t have a deadline for the Valdes affair. One option would be for him to see out his contract - in which case we wouldn’t sign a keeper."Barca is also believed to be keen on adding Brazilian star Neymar to their ranks, with Bartomeu admitting the club's interest is real.

"We chose to announce that we were interested in Neymar so that the footballing world would know that Barça wants this player."

Evra: Manchester United has more character than anyone else

    246164hp2.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson's men came from behind once again to secure a point against West Ham, but the French left back feels that such performances are taken for granted.

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra says that no club has as much character as the Premier League leader, and that the Red Devils do not receive the praise they deserve.

United has become synonymous with late comebacks over the past two decades, and the club did it once again in Wednesday's 2-2 draw against West Ham; however, Evra is convinced that such exploits are now taken for granted among neutrals, who loathe to praise the league leaders.

"Because it is Manchester United people don't give us a lot of credit," Evra told Sky Sports. "They just say 'Oh, okay, they escaped, they came back.'

"If it is another team they say what great character they have, what a great team they are. But we have not escaped. This is character. This is personality. It is the reason we are in the position we are.

"I don't see anyone with more character than this team."

Nevertheless, with United currently on the verge of collecting its 20th league title, Evra is confident that the prospect of silverware will more than make up for a lack of plaudits.

"You have to accept the criticism," Evra said. "But in France we say we pay the musician at the end of the show. I hope we are going to be paying this year."

Stramaccioni's Inter future to be decided by end of June, says Moratti

    272937hp2.jpg

The club's president has given the coach until the end of the season to prove his worth and insists he has not yet considered a replacement
Andrea Stramaccioni's future at Inter will be decided by the end of June, according to Massimo Moratti.

The coach has come under fire following a poor run of league form, a Europa League exit and a Coppa Italia semifinal defeat to Roma.

Inter, which has lost four of its last five Serie A games, has slid down the table to seventh place, five points adrift of a Champions League spot, and nine points behind fierce rival AC Milan. With speculation surrounding Stramaccioni's future, Moratti has revealed his fate will be decided at the end of the season, but remains adamant he has not yet considered replacing him.

He told reporters: “You will know the future of Stramaccioni on June 30. At the moment it is difficult to judge his actions as we have been hampered with injuries. Names that circulate? I'll give them to you guys, we have not had contact with anyone.”

The Nerazzurri have been hit with a long list of injuries, with Antonio Cassano, Rodrigo Palacio and Diego Milito all sidelined and Esteban Cambiasso and Fredy Guarin joining a growing list of the injured.

Moratti is sympathetic with the current situation, but believes the team's approach to games must not alter.

"Is it a problem of the preparation? I have not had time to analyze it, but I think the results do favor for something like this, maybe something in the preparation must be changed."

There is no buy-back clause for Song, insists

The Barcelona midfielder's cousin had stated that he is unhappy with his role in Spain, but the French manager believes the 25-year-old wants to "give it a go for another year" Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied that the club holds a buy-back clause for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song.

The revelation follows news that Song is unhappy in Catalonia and looking to move, as his cousin Rigobert Song suggested on Wednesday.

However, Wenger refuted the claim, stating: "There is no buy-back clause. I heard he wants to give it a go for another season. He is a quality player."

The midfielder has only made 15 appearances for the Blaugrana this season in La Liga, three of which were from the bench.

"Alex is not happy [at Barcelona]," Song's cousin Rigobert told Calciomercato. "At Arsenal he was a leader on and off the field, he doesn't feel like the protagonist in Spain, it makes him feel bad.

"He still has a long contract, until 2017. I do not think moving away is the right choice. All players want to play all the time but in Barcelona it is not easy.

"Alex must have patience. His time will come because he has the qualities to do well."

Hughton insists Van Wolfswinkel will join Norwich City even if Canaries are relegated

    249497hp2.jpg

The player's agent suggested the deal could be cancelled should the Norfolk club go down, but the Canaries' boss has denied the claims while also commenting on Kei Kamara's status Norwich City manager Chris Hughton has denied that record signing Ricky Van Wolfswinkel’s summer move to Carrow Road is dependent on the club retaining its Premier League status.

The Sporting Lisbon striker’s agent Louis Laros recently insisted that the 8.5 million pound deal includes a clause that allows him to pull out should the Canaries suffer relegation, with four points currently separating them from the bottom three.

Hughton has dismissed such speculation, though, telling reporters: "I have heard those reports, but the facts are that he has signed for Norwich City and I expect to see him on the first of July.

"Any talk of a relegation clause in the contract is not fact. That is where we are and we look forward to seeing him next season."

The former Birmingham boss was less definitive on the future of Kei Kamara, whose loan deal from Sporting Kansas City is set to expire May 6.

"We are conscious that a decision has to be made on him," Hughton said. "He has made a good impact. We still have a bit of time. It's not for a few weeks that we need to make that decision and we are putting our heads together to see what we want to do."

With five games still to play, Hughton is confident that his side can avoid being sucked into a relegation fight that it has avoided for the majority of the season.

"We still have six very good clubs below us at this moment and it is our intention to stay where we are," Hughton said. "We have five games, three of them at home. It is in our hands. It could be worse, we could be in 17th or 18th place. Apart from the early part of season we have not been in the bottom three.

"That indicates that overall it has been a decent season. We just need to make sure we finish it well."

Balotelli named in Time's 100 most influential list

    264414hp2.jpg

The AC Milan striker has been included as an 'icon' alongside the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama and pop stars Beyonce and Justin Timberlake.AC Milan star Mario Balotelli has been named in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

The 22-year-old has been included as part of the 'icon' section of the publication's famous listing, alongside the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama, pop stars Beyonce and Justin Timberlake and Burmese politician Aung San Suu Kyi.

"Mario has all the qualities to be a top player: power and athleticism, alongside a good understanding of the game — all positive," said former Italy star Gianfranco Zola, making the player's case in the magazine. "I worked with Mario for a short period with Italy’s Under-21 side. I liked him straight away. I liked the way he handled himself and his composure and calmness in situations.

"Mario could shrug off things happening around him. Only the big players have that calm. Mario can play the big games and handle the crucial moments, but he needs to keep control. That is vital for him.

"From afar, people may think he’s a madman, but he isn't. Mario is a lovely guy, very humble and very funny. I can assure people he has always been a pleasure to deal with.

"He has returned to Italy from England as the main man with lots of attention. Now he has to ensure he keeps control and keeps focus. Mario loves the pressure, but to succeed, it is about finding balance."

Basketball legend LeBron James, skiing sensation Lindsey Vonn and Chinese tennis star Li Na are the other sports nominees to make the 100.

Southampton goalkeper Artur Boruc signs new two-year deal

    103636hp2.jpg

The veteran's contract had been set to expire this summer, but he has agreed an extension following his emergence as the club's first choice since Mauricio Pochettino's arrival.Southampton has agreed a new two-year deal with goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

The 33-year-old's contract was set to expire at the end of this season, but the Poland international has agreed terms on an extension after establishing himself as the club's No. 1 keeper since manager Mauricio Pochettino's arrival in January.

"I am very pleased and I'm proud to be a part of a big prospect," Boruc told the club's official website. "As a club, I believe we can achieve a lot over the next two years, and I'm looking forward to that.

"As I've said before, [the Premier League] is probably the best place to play football, and nothing has changed my mind on that since I came to Southampton."

"The new manager has changed a lot - we're playing totally different football, and I think that football is quite nice to watch and quite effective.

"Playing this style of football you can achieve a lot, and you need to be ambitious in your life. We've been getting points against teams like Liverpool and Manchester City, but I think we can get even better. We're looking forward to the next game."

Pochettino says the new deal is just reward for Boruc's competitiveness and bravery.

"I'm very happy and very satisfied," Pochettino said. "Artur deserves this contract because, in the three months that I've been here, he has been crucial for us.

"He has a very strong personality and character. He is very brave in the way that he plays and, with our brand of football, it's very important that we have a keeper like Boruc for the long term.

"It's especially important for him to go into the last few games of the season with the confidence of the club and to know that he's going to be here for the next two years, because that suits his competitiveness."

The move likley limits the first-team opportunities with the Saints available in the coming seasons for U.S. Under-20 goalkeeper Cody Cropper, who has been playing for the club's U-21 side in his first season with Southampton.

Abidal: My future is in Barcelona's hands

    269951hp2.jpg

Having made his comeback from a liver transplant, the Frenchman has insisted that whether he continues to ply his trade at Camp Nou is down to the club.
Eric Abidal says he wants to continue playing for Barcelona, but he insists that whether he does so will ultimately be the club's decision.

The 33-year-old made his long-awaited comeback from a liver transplant in the 5-0 win over Mallorca on April 6, and although the Frenchman admits said he wants to remain with the Spanish Liga leader.

"If my health allows me, then I want to carry on playing. I would like to stay at Barca, but that depends on them," Abidal told radio station RAC1. "I have had no offers from other clubs, although I have had many contacts. But Barca have treated me very well."

Abidal went on to pay tribute to his cousin, the organ donor who saved his life, insisting it is he who should be congratulated for the player's recovery.

“Surgeons told me which donors were most likely to be accepted, although at first I did not want a living donor," Abidal said. "My best friend was also compatible, but they ended up choosing my cousin. My cousin should be congratulated, because he is more a symbol than I am. The star belongs to him.

“After the cancer, I see life differently, although I’m still the same person. The word 'cancer' is very strong.

"At first, when you talk to the doctors, it makes you scared. I reacted quite badly, but then I accepted it, because I am a very positive person.

"What I said was that I had to come back to playing as soon as possible. I was not afraid. The doctors were very professional and I went into the operating room with confidence."

Sunderland striker Fletcher undergoes ankle surgery

The 26-year-old suffered ligament damage while on international duty with Scotland against Wales, and he will now target a return to full fitness for the start of next season.

Sunderland striker Steven Fletcher has undergone surgery on his ankle after injuring his ligaments while on international duty with Scotland.

The 26-year-old is the Black Cats' leading scorer this season with 11 goals following his 12 million pound summer move from Wolves, but he has missed the last three games after landing awkwardly in his country's World Cup qualifier against Wales in March.

The club has not yet set a timeframe on how long Fletcher's recovery period will be, but it confirmed that he had undergone a procedure on his injured ankle on Monday. Since the striker's injury, the Mackems have replaced manager Martin O'Neill with Paolo Di Canio and gone on to beat local rivals Newcastle 3-0 at St James' Park as they continue their fight against relegation.

Sunderland remains just three points above the drop zone in 15th position, with Wigan holding a game in hand over, as well as 16th-placed Stoke and 17th-placed Aston Villa.

Fletcher last found the net against QPR in March, though that goal proved ineffective as the Black Cats lost 3-1 on the day.

Gundogan: I want to play in Spain or England

    262012hp2.jpg

The midfielder has stressed he is happy to pen a new deal to remain with Borussia Dortmund for the time being, but believes his future lies abroad.Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he would like to move to the Premier League or La Liga in future, but insists he is happy to extend his current deal with Borussia Dortmund for the time being.

The Germany international has been in fine form this season and was linked with Barcelona among a number of other teams earlier this year, but had earlier told Sport Bild that he was "100 percent sure" he would remain with the club next season.

Although the 22-year-old has stressed he is keen to negotiate a new contract with the "incredible" Bundesliga outfit, he has made it clear that his dream would be to make a switch to England or Spain further into his career.

"My objective is to play in Spain or England," Gundogan told AS. "Without a doubt I am happy here, but I have a plan for my career. I don't know what will happen in the future, but what I do know is I desire to play in one of these two countries. I like the style of Spanish football.

"I have a contract with Dortmund until 2015, and the club wants to renew. At the moment we're negotiating the deal, but there is still nothing clear."

Gundogan has developed into an important first-team member at BVB since joining the club from Nurnberg in the summer of 2011.

Fabregas hoping for 'historic' Clasico Champions League final

    251062hp2.jpg

The Spaniard believes a Wembley meeting with Real Madrid would be a momentous occasion and says Tito Vilanova and Eric Abidal have inspired the squad.

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is desperate to reach the Champions League final this season - and to face bitter rivals Real Madrid at Wembley.

The Spanish giants take on Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the last four of the competition and, while Fabregas acknowledges the formidable task of defeating the newly crowned Bundesliga champion, the former Arsenal captain is keen for a Clasico showdown in May.

"I want a Real Madrid-Barcelona final. It would be a very important game in the history of football," Fabregas told radio station RAC1. "However, first we must think of the semifinal against Bayern. This will be extremely tough."

Fabregas went on to describe the impact of the returns of Tito Vilanova and Eric Abidal to the Barca camp, revealing how the duo's respective battles against cancer have been inspirations to the squad.

"Tito and Abidal have given us a lot of inner strength to continue to fight until the final," Fabregas said.

No agreement with Liverpool for Eriksen just yet, says Ajax

The club's press manager was adamant the two teams have yet to reach a deal for the playmaker, but technical director Marc Overmars again indicated the player's intention to leave Ajax has denied it has reached an agreement with Liverpool over the transfer of Denmark international Christian Eriksen despite rampant speculation of the playmaker's move to Anfield.

The midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Eredivisie giant for some time, with the Reds and Tottenham thought to be heading the list of various European clubs chasing the youngster's signature. Ajax's press manager, Eefje Schep, has insisted there is no deal in place to take Eriksen to Merseyside, but he did not rule out a future move.

"We will send out a press release when there is an agreement," Schep told Danish television station TV2. "Also if there is only a deal between Ajax and the club. So at this time there is no agreement between Ajax and Liverpool."

The 21-year-old attacking playmaker - who is the current Dutch Player of the Year - has netted 12 goals so far this season in another impressive campaign; however, Ajax will almost certainly have to make do without him next season, with technical director Marc Overmars again indicating the midfielder's desire to leave.

"Christian has informed us that he won't be signing a new deal with us at this time," Overmas said. "I think that he and his agent will want to see what options are available in the summer."

Terry: Chelsea players must keep focus despite squad rotation

The Blues captain acknowledged that everyone at the club - including himself - wants to play at every opportunity but highlighted the importance of staying prepared when left out.

John Terry has stressed his Chelsea teammates cannot "get too down" when left out of the starting lineup as the club approach a crucial end to the Premier League season.

With the race for Champions League qualification likely to go down to the wire, the Blues' win over Fulham on Wednesday saw them leapfrog Arsenal into third position and move three points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham.

Terry started his first Premier League game since the 2-1 loss to Southampton in March as interim boss Rafa Benitez continued to shuffle his pack, and the club captain urged his colleagues to keep the unity even if they are not called upon.

"It is very important we stay focused and do not get too down about not playing games," Terry told Sky Sports. "Obviously that [in the team] is where we all want to be, but, at the same time, we appreciate there are a lot of games coming up."

The veteran defender has himself been on the fringes this season with the likes of David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic all being favored by Benitez, but Terry netted twice at Craven Cottage to put a fiesty Fulham side to bed.

The defender insisted he will keep working hard to impress the boss, but will also always accept the Spaniard's decision should he be left out.

"All I can do, if I am not first or second choice, is obviously take my opportunities like tonight and try and impress the manager on a daily basis," Terry said. "If he decides to go with the other two [players], then so be it. It is down to me to work hard and get back in this very good team."

Former Chelsea forward Kalou would 'love' Premier League return

The Lille attacker indicated he is still "crazy" about England's top flight after his time at Stamford Bridge, while hinting he is uncertain about where he will play next season.

Ex-Chelsea attacker Salomon Kalou has admitted he would like to move back to England, with Arsenal thought to be interested in the player.

The 27-year-old joined Ligue 1 outfit Lille last summer after the Blues allowed his contract at Stamford Bridge to expire following a reduced first-team role of just 12 Premier League appearances during the campaign. The Cote d'Ivoire international was linked with the Gunners - as well as the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle - when his time in West London ended, but the attacker opted for France and is said to be enjoying his time there.

Fresh reports indicate Arsene Wenger could renew his interest this summer, though, and Kalou did not hold back when describing his fondness for a return to the Premier League.

"I'd love to go back to England," The Sun quoted him as saying. "I spent six seasons there and I am crazy about the Premier League.

"Players' careers change so quickly. You never know what will happen tomorrow."

Kalou, who is under contract at Lille until 2016, has netted eight goals and three assists in 22 Ligue 1 appearances this season, and he also scored once in the Champions League and French Cup, respectively.

Former Arsenal striker Van Persie - the current Player of the Year - makes the list after his stellar performances in the first half of the season effectively proved the difference in the title race, helping United open up the gap that will surely result in a 20th crown. His goal at West Ham on Wednesday was his 21st in the Premier League, and he has 25 in all competitions.

Michael Carrick makes the list after his most consistent season for United since joining from Spurs in 2006. Carrick, along with Patrice Evra, has played the most games for the Red Devils this season, with 38 appearances.

Although Suarez, with 22 goals, is the Premier League's top scorer with five rounds of games to go, the Uruguay international is considered an outsider for the PFA award due to a lack of popularity among his fellow professionals.Mata has been one of the most exciting players in the Premier League over the past two seasons, with this campaign seeing the Spain international step up his performances still further.

With 10 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League, coupled with another eight goals and 15 assists in other competitions, he has been Chelsea's most consistent and creative player.Hazard, who moved to Chelsea from Lille in the summer, had an explosive start to his Stamford Bridge career with four goals and an assist in his first three matches.

However, the Belgian struggled for consistency over the winter months, which may make him an outsider for the main award.Of the other players on the list for the Young Player award, Wilshere is a surprise name considering that he has made only 20 Premier League starts and was out injured until October.

Despite his impressive performances for Arsenal, it would seem unlikely that he will add a second award to the one he won in 2010-11.The presence of Lukaku on the list means a third Chelsea player is up for an award, although he has done all his good work on loan at West Bromwich Albion.

With 13 goals, he has helped fire the Baggies to a top-half finish, but it is unlikely that they will be able to retain his services beyond the end of this season.United's Welbeck may also be considered a surprise inclusion considering his lack of goals. With just one Premier League goal, against Stoke in October, most of his good work has been done around the area and he was particularly impressive in the 1-1 draw at Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Villa striker Benteke will be many people's pick as the most deserving winner of the award, though the players who vote may disagree.Without his goals - he has 15 in the league - Villa would already be relegated, and he has grown immeasurably in confidence over the course of his debut season in England.

Tottenham's Kyle Walker is the current holder of the Young Player award.
