Bayern Munich 4-0 Barcelona: Messi and Co. overrun as Germans all but seal final berth

    arjenrobbenbastianschweinsteigerceleb_576x324.jpg

Bayern Munich took a massive step toward returning to the Champions League final with an incredible 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona in the first leg of their last four clash at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

On the same day that they stunned the football world by capturing Mario Gotze from Bundesliga rival Borussia Dortmund, the Bavarian giants again reminded everyone that they are a force to be reckoned with by playing the Blaugrana off the pitch.

Thomas Muller opened the scoring with a close-range header, and put the second on a plate for Mario Gomez minutes into the second half.

Muller would controversially play a role in Arjen Robben's goal after appearing to foul Jordi Alba off the ball, before tapping in the fourth himself with eight minutes remaining to round off the biggest ever margin of victory in a Champions League semifinal.

Mario Gomez replaced the suspended Mario Mandzukic up front for the hosts, while for the visitors, Marc Bartra partnered Gerard Pique in defense with Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano injured.

I wore Chelsea shirt for David Luiz's birthday party, insists QPR goalkeeper Cesar

    269291hp2.jpg

The Brazilian, who wore the shirt to his countryman's fancy-dress party, is adamant the stunt was a joke and was not meant to upset his side's supporters.
QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar insists he meant no offence after being pictured wearing a Chelsea shirt.

The 33-year-old, who arrived at Loftus Road from Inter last summer, was pictured wearing a full Chelsea kit while attending David Luiz's birthday party in London.

QPR has confirmed the matter will be dealt with internally, and the Brazilian goalkeeper has reiterated that the stunt was a joke and was not meant to upset his side's supporters.

“I would like to clarify that last night I attended David Luiz’s fancy dress birthday party and as a joke for my friend, my family and I dressed as him," Cesar said in a statement on QPR's official website.

“I want to assure everyone that absolutely no offense was intended."

De Sciglio: I'm not angry with Allegri

The 20-year-old has stressed he is not overly concerned at being restricted to the bench following his poor performance in the crucial clash with Fiorentina earlier this month.

Mattia De Sciglio insists that he has not been at all beset by his recent demotion to the AC Milan bench by coach Massimiliano Allegri.

The 20-year-old defender has been one of the revelations of the Rossoneri's season, but he has not been afforded a start since his error-strewn display against Fiorentina on April 7. Even so, De Sciglio claims that there is no problem with Allegri and says that he remains as committed to the Milan cause as ever before.

"I'm not angry or otherwise about the recent exclusions," De Sciglio told reporters. "Decisions are taken only by the coach.

"My job is and always will be to commit myself to the team to the maximum, as I've always done when I have been questioned.

"I still have so much desire to work hard and so much desire to improve."

De Sciglio has explained that his sole focus is on helping Milan hold onto third place on Serie A, with Fiorentina having drawn to within a point of the faltering Rossoneri over the weekend.

"We must try everything to bring home the third place, while always looking to take advantage of any Napoli slip-ups," De Sciglio said, alluding to the second-placed Partenopei. "We made a great effort to get back near the top, so we must not waste all the work done; it would be really naive.

"I'm confident, though, as this team has always shown it knows how to pick itself back up after a negative period."

Gill: Only a small minority of Manchester United fans oppose Glazers

The owners have come in for criticism since taking control of the Red Devils in 2005, but the outgoing CEO says the club's on-field success is beginning to win round the fans Manchester United chief executive David Gill insists only a small minority of the club's fans oppose the Glazer family.

Over the years many United fans have staged various protests against the Glazers, the most notable being the green-and-gold scarves worn by some in honor of the club’s original colors.

But with five league titles and a Champions League trophy to show for their time at the club, Gill believes the much-maligned Americans are beginning to win over the fans.

"It's the quality of the owners [that matters]," Gill told reporters. "And I think [the Glazers] have definitely demonstrated that since they have taken over, they have shown that what happens on the pitch is crucial to the club's ambitions off it."

Many of the previous protests were down to the clubs huge debt, which stems from the loans the Glazers took out in order to finance their takeover.

But United has already begun to repay its debts, and still found the funds to sign Robin van Persie for 25 million pounds last summer - a signing which has proved instrumental in the club's 20th title triumph.

Gill understands not every fan has been convinced by the Glazers, despite the team’s success, but he remains convinced such supporters are in the minority.

"There are still a small number of dissenters and they will always be there and they have had long held views which they are not going to change. We respect those," he added.

"Ultimately, someone has to own the club.

"But having said that, there will be a very small minority, MUST (the Manchester United Supporters' Trust), who will always retain their own views."

Xavi rues Barcelona's 'worst result ever'

    274320hp2.jpg

The playmaker has conceded it is now 'almost impossible' for the Blaugrana to progress to the Wembley final, admitting they were clearly second-best at the Allianz Arena.

Xavi has described Tuesday's humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Champions League semifinal opponents Bayern Munich as Barcelona's "worst result ever."

The loss at the Allianz Arena was the biggest in the competition's history at the last-four stage and represented the Blaugrana's heaviest away defeat in European competition. The club's chief playmaker admitted afterwards that the Catalans could have no complaints about the final scoreline.

"It's the worst result ever," Xavi told reporters. "They were better - and I don't mind saying that."

The Spain international also conceded that the Liga leaders have little hope of turning the tie around in the second leg at Camp Nou next week.

"It's almost impossible," Xavi said. "But we must try to, for this club and for everyone."

Barcelona made history in the quarterfinals by recovering from a 2-0 loss away to AC Milan with a 4-0 victory in the return leg to progress 4-2 on aggregate after a stirring comeback.

Pique rues better, faster, and stronger Bayern

    274673hp2.jpg

The defender admits the Bavarians were the deserved winners following his side's 4-0 thrashing at the Allianz Arena that leaves its European hopes hanging by a thread Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was distraught with his side’s showing on Tuesday that saw them suffer a 4-0 beating in the Champions League at the hands of Bayern Munich.

Two goals from Thomas Muller, coupled with second-half strikes from Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben have ensured that Tito Vilanova's side will need to put in a brilliant performance in the second leg at Camp Nou next Wednesday to reach the final.

"They were quicker, stronger and played better football," Pique told TV3. "They were the superior team. [Wining the tie] is almost impossible. We will have to turn around and go out and win the next match for our fans.

"We have been given a refresher."

Gomez's tap-in - which put Bayern 2-0 up - appeared to be offside while Muller fouled Jordi Alba for Robben's goal but the former Manchester United center back did not want to lay the blame on officials.

Pique insisted: "The referee did not have any influence on the result."

    :shocked::cool:Fergie in £120million lift

    ronaldo_1716073a.jpg

ALEX FERGUSON could boost his title winners with a £120million overhaul this summer.

The Manchester United boss would be able to generate £70m of that through sales, with another £50m coming from the Old Trafford coffers. United know Manchester City are eyeing a big summer spree, having missed out on Robin van Persie last year.

Chelsea will also undoubtedly strengthen under a new boss. Now Ferguson is ready to do the same to stay ahead domestically, whilst making another concerted bid to win his third Champions League.

The club are set to listen to offers for both Nani at £15m and Anderson at £10m.
And while Fergie does not want to lose Javier Hernandez, he appreciates the Mexican striker may want more regular first-team football elsewhere. Hernandez has started only seven of United’s league games this season and there is plenty of interest in him from Spain, not least from Real Madrid.

The man they call ‘Little Pea’ would cost £22m but the big question mark hangs over Wayne Rooney, who Paris Saint-Germain want in a £25m deal. And United are considering cashing in on the England star, 27, who has two years left on his current contract. Top of Fergie’s list of targets are, of course, strikers.

Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski is close to an £18m move to Old Trafford. But Ferguson is also keen on one of Europe’s most wanted in Atletico Madrid’s prolific £50m-rated Radamel Falcao. And all plans could go out the window if United entice Cristiano Ronaldo back to the club.

Ronaldo has two years left on his Real contract and refused to sign a new deal.
United could get him for £65m after selling him in 2009 for £80m — and that would be the biggest statement Fergie’s new champions could make.

    Suarez banned for ten games

    liverpool-chelsea-luis-suarez-premier-league-branislav-ivanovic-anfield_2933882.jpg

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has been suspended for ten games by the Football Association after being found guilty of violent conduct for his bite on Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

He has until Friday to appeal the decision.Suarez, 26, was caught on camera biting Ivanovic's arm during Sunday's 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Referee Kevin Friend did not see the incident and so retrospective action was taken by the Football Association, with Suarez and Liverpool accepting the charge of violent conduct on Tuesday.

But the Uruguayan, who was suspended for seven games in 2010 for biting an opponent when playing for Ajax, did not agree with the FA's assertion that a three-game ban would be insufficient punishment for his actions.

However, a statement on the FA website on Wednesday read: "Luis Suarez has been suspended for a total of ten matches after an Independent Regulatory Commission today ruled on a charge of violent conduct.

"A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission today upheld The FA's claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three. The suspension begins with immediate effect."This follows an incident with Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic in Sunday's fixture at Anfield. The Liverpool forward had accepted a charge of violent conduct but had denied The FA's claim that the standard three-match sanction was insufficient for the offence.

"Suarez has until midday on Friday 26 April to appeal the additional suspension, above the standard three matches."
