Everton 1-0 Fulham: Pienaar strikes to cut gap on fifth-placed Tottenham

    275497hp2.jpg

Everton kept dreams of a Europa League place alive with a 1-0 win over Fulham, with Steven Pienaar getting the only goal of the game.

The Toffees were dominant from the off and they were rewarded for their efforts when Seamus Coleman set up Pienaar in the Fulham box to put the hosts one goal to the good. The hosts went on to have numerous efforts around the Cottager’s area, but weren’t good enough to double their lead before the break.

Fulham looked to have got out of second gear after the break, but the hosts soon deflated their spirits again with some dominant football that meant the Cottagers had little chance of points. A flurry of chances and great saves from Mark Schwarzer meant that the score remained 1-0, but the home side could have won it by three or maybe four goals in the end.The deadlock was broken 16 minutes in when a beautiful exchange of passing between Leon Osman and Coleman initiated the move that saw the latter set up Pienaar to comfortably place the ball into the net from the penalty spot.

Fulham’s position in the game wasn’t helped on the half-hour mark, as Dimitar Berbatov was forced off with an injury and limped to the bench to be replaced by Mladen Petric.

The visitors looked a little more up for the game after the break; Urby Emanuelson blasted the ball over the bar after Everton's defense had left him all the space he required on the hosts’ penalty spot. However, Everton soon started to turn the screw once more and had numerous occasions to double the lead. The hosts were also domineering in the middle of the park, with the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Osman easily displacing Giorgos Karagounis and Eyong Enoh.

Kevin Mirallas should have put Everton two goals to the good 15 minutes from time after some delightful skill that included tipping the ball over a Fulham defender to set himself up on the angle, but the attacker’s powerful shot was met by the palms of Schwarzer who pushed the ball away.

Schwarzer was called into action yet again, this time in the closing moments of the game, as substitute Ross Barkley went one-on-one with the ‘keeper, but the youngster’s shot was match by the Australian and the score remained just 1-0 as the whistle rang out.

Wigan 2-2 Tottenham: Boyce own goal rescues a point for Spurs

    275484hp2.jpg

Tottenham kept its top-four hopes alive after snatching a late 2-2 draw against Wigan at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

A comical opener from Gareth Bale gave Spurs a ninth-minute lead but an instant reply from Emerson Boyce put the Latics on level terms just two minutes later.

The hosts were the dominant side from there on and a sensational strike from McManaman early in the second half looked to have given them victory, but a late own goal from Boyce meant Andre Villas-Boas’s side left with a share of the spoils.

Predictably, Bale was the first man to threaten as the Welshman headed wide two minutes in before a Huddlestone free kick crashed against the post shortly afterward.

But with Bale proving such a constant threat, Spurs would not have to wait long for their opener – although the manner of the Welshman’s strike was in stark contrast to any of his 18 other league goals this season.

Maynor Figueroa and Joel were exchanging passes in their own box but as the Wigan stopper came under pressure from Bale, his attempted clearance went straight into the 23-year-old’s boot and into the back of the net.

Such a comical goal could have dented any team’s confidence but the Latics responded instantly as they won a corner straight up the other end, with Boyce then rising unmarked to head home his third of the season.

And it was the hosts who looked the likelier to score thereafter as Arouna Kone clipped a shot from distance just over the bar on 24 minutes.

Despite late pressure from Bale and Defoe, though, it would remain 1-1 at the break, while Mousa Dembele’s afternoon was cut short on the stroke of halftime as the injured Belgian made way for Lewis Holtby.

But upon the resumption, McManaman ensured Wigan would pick up where it left off before the break in breathtaking fashion. Latching onto a loose ball on the edge of the area, the 21-year-old took the ball away from Naughton and smashed a thunderous drive into the top of the net past a helpless Hugo Lloris.

It was a fantastic strike and the lead it gave Wigan was no less than Martinez’s men deserved. The home side’s next move was easy to guess, as it brought on another defender and an extended period of resolute defending followed.

But the hosts could only hold on for so long and, from a set-piece late on, Boyce turned from hero to villain with a late touch that sent the ball into his own net - keeping Spurs’ Champions League hopes alive and compounding Wigan’s relegation worries.

Stoke 1-0 Norwich: Adam strike sees Stoke closer to safety

    227023hp2.jpg

A 46th minute strike from the Scottish midfielder was enough for Tony Pulis' men against the Canaries, taking the Potters to the 40 point mark which should see them to safety Charlie Adam's 46th minute strike was enough for Stoke to see off Norwich at the Britannia Stadium as the club looks to have finally cemented its Premier League status for next season.

In a largely nervy and unspectacular affair the Potters were able to secure their second consecutive win for the first time since December last year, thanks to Adam's second half strike, moving them to the 40 points mark for this season.

Stoke pressed forward immediately at the start of the second half, and Peter Crouch's long range pass found Adam who coolly slotted the ball past Mark Bunn in the Norwich goal.

Tony Pulis had the benefit of naming an unchanged team from the side that recording only its second victory of 2013 against QPR last weekend.

While Chris Hughton, in the opposite dugout, made three changes from the side that all but condemned Reading to relegation in their 2-1 victory last week. Russell Bennett replaced Michael Turner, Javier Garrido made way for Steven Whittaker and Alex Tettey started ahead of last week’s goal scoring hero Elliott Bennett.

The first half passed by with very little action, as to be expected from two teams who have collectively amassed the fewest Premier League victories in 2013.

The first real chance of the game came after 20 minutes when Cameron Jerome's strike from a corner struck Steven Nzonzi who curiously appeared to move his arm towards Jerome's goalbound strike.

Minutes later Nzonzi was at the center of the action yet again, though he will know he was fortunate to stay on the field. The Stoke midfielder was dispossessed by Kei Kamara and the 24-year-old Frenchman scythed down Kamara with his feet off the floor. Referee Anthony Taylor leniently only opted to show Nzonzi a yellow, though it perhaps should have been a red.

In the 42nd minute, Stoke fans respectfully held a minute’s applause in memory of former player Paul Ware who recently died at the age of 42, before Taylor brought the first half to a close.

It took just one second half minute for the game to liven up. Peter Crouch flicked a long ball into the path of Charlie Adam who controlled the pass well before slotting the ball past Mark Bunn in the Norwich goal to give the hosts the lead.

With Stoke dominating the majority of the possession, there were little chances created with Pulis' men seemingly satisfied with a one goal lead.

As the second half wore on, Stoke dropped deeper although still in control with Norwich creating very little clear cut opportunities.

A long throw from Russell Bennett almost caused the Potters a problem in the final minute of stoppage time, but Kamara's header was wild and Stoke held on for a vital victory.

Defeat for Norwich means the Canaries have not won in eight games at the Britannia and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Newcastle 0-6 Liverpool: Sturridge and Coutinho run riot in Reds romp

    275550hp2.jpg

Liverpool marked its first game since Luis Suarez's suspension with a resounding 6-0 win against Newcastle on Saturday.

Daniel Agger gave the Reds a third-minute lead after heading home Jose Enrique's looping cross before former Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson tapped home for a second on the quarter-of-an-hour mark.

The instrumental Daniel Sturridge then struck twice after the break, while Fabio Borini and Henderson completed the scoring as the visitors ended a streak of three successive draws, while also extending Newcastle's miserable run to just one win in eight Premier League games.

Liverpool took command in the early stages and was rewarded for its dominance just three minutes in.

Enrique sent a looping cross into the danger area, where Agger stood unmarked and in yards of space. The Denmark defender got his head to the ball and calmly lobbed over a hapless Rob Elliot.

It was the Reds' 75th Premier League goal against Newcastle – the most that they have scored against any other side in the top division. The 76th would shortly follow.

A long ball from Pepe Reina was touched to Phillipe Coutinho by Sturridge, who then combined with the 23-year-old to perfection as some sublime build-up play allowed Henderson to break free in the penalty area and tap the ball into an empty net.

A one-sided affair was signalling all kinds of worry for the home side and its task was not made any easier when James Perch wasted its biggest chance of the half minutes before the break. The 27-year-old met a pinpoint cross inside the box but sent his header disastrously wide of Reina’s goal.

Pardew's response was to send Ben Arfa and Yoan Gouffran out for the second half and their presence immediately gave the hosts a notable injection of energy.

But Elliott was soon picking the ball out of his net yet again as Coutinho starred once more with a sensational through-ball to Sturridge, who gratefully tucked his finish home.

And on the hour mark, matters got even worse for the home side as Henderson won the ball off Cheikh Tiote and squared to Sturridge, who was in the right place at the right time once again for his second of the game.

Substitute Borini then rubbed salt into Newcastle's wounds as he tucked away Stewart Downing's cross with a fine finish, before Mathieu Debuchy was sent off shortly afterwards for a second bookable offense.

Minutes later, Henderson swooped in with his second to make it six, completing a very bleak result indeed for Pardew and his men.

Neymar ready to leave Santos, reveals club vice president

    273204hp2.jpg

The skilful attacker is edging ever closer to a move to Europe after telling his club he will not sign a new deal this summer.Santos vice president Odilio Rodriguez has revealed that Neymar has told the club that he is ready to move elsewhere and will not sign a contract extension.

The Brazil international's current deal is due to expire in the summer of 2014 and the Peixe were keen to hold on to their star attacker until after next year's World Cup.

However, Neymar has made it clear that his time at Santos is nearing its end as he wants to prove his worth elsewhere.

"Neymar has informed us that he won't be renewing his deal because his time at Santos has come to an end," Rodriguez told Cadena Ser.

The 21-year-old has caught the attention of several European giants, with Barcelona sitting in pole position to secure his services.

Neymar will compete in the Confederations Cup this summer before traveling to Catalunya in July to discuss a potential transfer to the Camp Nou side, Goal.com exclusively revealed earlier this month.

Atletico Madrid 1-2 Real Madrid: Di Maria ensures more derby despair for Rojiblancos

    275566hp2.jpg

Atletico Madrid's 14 years of derby pain will continue for a few weeks more after it was defeated 2-1 at the Vicente Calderon by Real Madrid in their Liga clash on Saturday.

Los Colchoneros have not won a Madrid derby since 1999, but with both sides set to meet again on May 17 in the Copa Del Rey final, they seemed well on their way to reversing that streak after Radamel Falcao's fourth minute opener.

But Juanfran's own-goal nine minutes later granted Jose Mourinho's men a route back into the game, and after a fierce contest with a number of bookings on either side, Angel Di Maria struck the game winner just after the hour mark with an expert finish.

The win puts Madrid six points ahead of Atletico in second place, and gives it a vital boost ahead of a monumental Champions League task against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, with a 4-1 deficit to overcome.

Mourinho erred on the side of caution with his starting lineup, omitting Cristiano Ronaldo from the squad after a thigh complaint, while for Atletico, the game came too soon for Arda Turan and Tiago, with both midfielders finalizing their recovery from injury.

With only four minutes on the clock, the home side was ahead. Diego Lopez could not smother a free-kick, and Diego Godin recovered the loose ball, clipping towards the far post for Falcao to head home.

Madrid was struggling to gain a foothold in the game, but with 13 minutes gone, it drew level. Di Maria’s free kick took an ungainly deflection off Juanfran, who could not stop the ball from bundling into the net.The match soon settled into the ferocious tempo befitting of a local derby, with tackles flying in left and right, forcing the referee into his pocket to fish out his yellow card no less than six times in the first half.

But minutes before the break, Madrid broke the Atletico ranks through Di Maria’s excellent run, allowing Karim Benzema to be slipped through, but his hesitancy gave Thibaut Courtois the split second he needed to nick the ball off the Frenchman’s toes.

The match restarted, and Diego Costa cracked a header off the crossbar, before Gabi inexplicably slotted wide with time to pick his spot as Atletico looked the more threatening side coming out of the break.

But just like the first half, Madrid managed to find a goal despite appearing closer to conceding. Benzema spotted the darting run of Di Maria between the center backs, and played a neat pass to release the Argentine, who then slotted brilliantly into the far corner.Costa’s run and cross was pushed away from danger by Lopez, before the Atletico man was correctly denied a penalty for falling theatrically to the ground under pressure from Nacho.

Late on, Filipe was released by Adrian Lopez towards goal, but could only find the side netting when other options would have been better served, as time ran out in the Madrid derby for Atleti for the 14th year in a row.

Mazzarri: It was normal that Napoli missed Cavani

    254159hp2.jpg

Despite admitting his team felt its star striker's absence, the trainer still praised the side's efforts and their season after securing a win against Pescara
Walter Mazzarri revealed Napoli felt the loss of Edinson Cavani during the 3-0 victory at Pescara, although he believed the win proved they were not dependent on the Uruguayan.

With the 26-year-old sidelined through suspension, Gokhan Inler, Blerim Dzemaili and Goran Pandev grabbed the goals against the basement boys.

And while admitting the team was "anxious" without their talisman in the first half, Mazzarri praised the resolve displayed by his men in the latter stages of the match.

"Tonight we took an important step towards the Champions League," the Italian acknowledged to reporters after the match. "We knew it would be a tough game.

"Cavani is certainly not a bad striker so it's normal we missed him, but I was still sure we would be able to do well without him. We are not dependent on Cavani, and I know what the rest can give.

"I liked the attitude of my players. We struggled to get past Ivan Pelizzoli which made my men anxious, but the first goal was fundamental to unlocking Pescara."

Though Napoli began the campaign as title contenders, they have fallen eight points off the pace from front-runners Juventus, with the Turin giants still boasting a game in hand.

But Mazzarri was adamant this season can remain a milestone in the club's history.

"We recovered after a brief decline. Do not forget that we did better than last season. Winning direct qualification to the Champions League is equivalent to the Scudetto for us," he added.

"I'm reluctant to talk about next season, but I know the team can play at the same level across domestic and European competition. I will talk about my future at the end of the season.

The 51-year-old's contract is due to expire in June, although there are rumors club patron Aurelio De Laurentis is ready to offer his coach a three-year extension.

Di Maria: Derby win is extra motivation for Champions League

    254525hp2.jpg

The hero of the night dedicated his goal to his newborn child and believes the result serves as a springboard to a revival against Borussia Dortmund Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria says the 2-1 victory over Atletico can be the catalyst for Champions League redemption against Borussia Dortmund.

The Spanish champions were humbled 4-1 by Jurgen Klopp's men in the first leg of the semifinals, but fired an immediate reply to their doubters by silencing the Vicente Calderon.

And Di Maria, who was excluded from the starting lineup to face the Germans on Wednesday owing to the birth of his daughter, believes the derby win can set them off on the right foot to turn the result around next week.

"Winning this match is extra motivation and will help us to be at our best on Tuesday," the 25-year-old underlined to reporters. "We do not take that match as lost. The league, however, does not let up and we knew that if we lost they would draw level with us, so we did things as well as we could to get a decent gap between us and them so we can be calmer.

"The truth is I needed a goal to dedicate it to my wife and daughter and I managed to get it. We did everything right and the way we wanted tonight. The coach put out the team he thought would get the result."

Starlets Nacho and Alvaro Morata echoed their teammate's opinion, with the former quick to declare: "Madrid is the best team in the world. The team is very confident and hopefully can go on to the final."

Morata added: "Against Dortmund the team have to be united and the supporters also have to give all they can. We know the game will be difficult, but we'll try."

Klopp relieved after 'lucky' Dortmund win

    271804hp2.jpg

The German was happy with the result despite the performance while dismissing controversy regarding Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp expressed his satisfaction at how his side held on for a 2-1 victory at Fortuna Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Midfielder Nuri Sahin put on a masterful performance with a 30-yard goal in the first half before setting up Jakub Blaszczykowski's decisive second with an exquisite pass.

Adam Bozdek's late strike set up a nervy ending for the former German champion, but Klopp was still pleased with what he labelled a "lucky" result.

"I am very satisfied with the win," the 45-year-old revealed to reporters after the match. "From the 10th minute we played a good game with Nuri scoring a world-class goal, though in the second we allowed the opponent too much and they came out and did well.

"But from my point of view it was not serious as it is normal that we can lose a little bit of the concentration. We are certainly not undeserved winners, just that due to their late goal it was a little lucky."

Klopp made 10 changes to the side that defeated Real Madrid 4-1 in midweek, but played down the significance of dropping stars Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze to the bench.

"We must not exaggerate. We talked about the record of Lewandowski [scoring in 12 consecutive matches] before. I told him that he can feel safe about his record because in the next 100 years no one will beat it," he added.

"Gotze had some muscular problems. [Ilkay] Gundogan had problems with his neck, while [Lukasz] Piszczek with his adductors. All three of them were not able to play today."

Gotze has already been confirmed as a Bayern Munich player next season after the Bavarians activated a 37 million euro release clause in his contract.

Lewandowski is also expected to follow his teammate out of Signal Iduna Park although Klopp has denied this.

Hoddle: Bale will stay at Tottenham this summer

The former England manager believes that the Welshman should and, indeed, will remain at his former club, while also praising the winger's "inspired" contribution this season Former Tottenham midfielder and England manager Glenn Hoddle expects that Gareth Bale will stay at White Hart Lane this summer.

The Welshman has been the subject of intense speculation amid an excellent season for Spurs; the winger is the London club's top scorer, striking 18 Premier League goals in 28 games.

Hoddle, however, is fairly confident that the 23-year-old will remain at White Hart Lane as he believes that, given the recent birth of his child, Bale would prefer to stay in England - a move that the footballer-turned-pundit encourages wholeheartedly.

"Well I do actually [think Bale will stay]. I say that because I think the lad would want to stay. He's just had a baby, I don't see him moving abroad at this moment in time," he told Absolute Radio. "If I were advising him I would say: 'Stay for another season'. I went abroad myself and it's not as easy to settle off the pitch and it's about settling off the pitch to perform on it and I just got a gut feeling that he would want to stay at least another year."

Hoddle proceeded to extol the forward's virtues, hailing Bale's contribution this season as "inspired" and declaring the Welshman to be his player of the season before emphasizing how important it is that Tottenham retains his services.

"If Spurs can improve the squad and get into that top four, if they can sneak in there in this year, then I think that will secure Gareth Bale staying," he continued. "To me, he's been the player of the season because he's been very, very consistent. [Robin] van Persie and others have been in and out of form but this lad has kept his consistency right through the season.

"If he stays for another season, that's got to be great news for the club because they can attract really good players who want to play with Gareth Bale.

"The amount of goals that he's scored and he's not even a striker really, let's face it – he's played wide, he's played in that hole in the pocket, he's done an unbelievable job this season. He's playing inspired football at the moment."

Carragher hails 6-0 Newcastle win as Liverpool's performance of the season

The veteran Reds defender lauded his team's showing amidst some tricky circumstances against the Magpies, with Daniel Sturridge earning particular praise for his goals Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has heralded the Reds' 6-0 rout over Newcastle as his side's performance of the season.

Brendan Rodgers's side romped to a victory as two doubles, courtesy of Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson, and a goal apiece from Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini were enough to consign the Magpies to an embarrassing defeat.

35-year-old Carragher, set to retire at the end of the season, emphasized his respect for Newcastle as he lauded his team's performance at a club that are struggling against relegation.

Asked by ESPN if it was Liverpool's best performance of the campaign, the defender agreed: "I think so, yeah, to come to Newcastle. We know they're fighting for their lives and it was going to be a really tough game - it normally is when we come here - but it was one of those days for us and unfortunate for them.

"Newcastle are a great club and I don't think many people want to see them go down. So we're pleased we've beat them, we can move on, but obviously I'd like to see them stay up."

The Liverpool veteran went on to extol the virtues of goalscorer Sturridge, while he was also eager to further praise the "top performance" amidst some difficult circumstances.

"Obviously, we all know what's gone on this week and it's probably been a bit difficult for the team and maybe the management and the staff to focus on this game, there's been so much more going on," he continued, "but we've put in a top performance at a difficult place, even though they're not doing as well as they normally would.

"St James' Park is always a difficult place to come but it's a great result for us and, as I said, [Sturridge] has come in over the last few games and changed the game last week against Chelsea, he's played up front and got two goals."

Newcastle win proves Liverpool are no one-man team, says Rodgers

The Reds boss emphasises the importance of the collective after thrashing the Magpies 6-0 without Luis Suarez after a "traumatic week", praising Philippe Coutinho particularly Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has asserted that his side is "not a one-man team" as, in Luis Suarez's absence, the Reds romped to a 6-0 victory over Newcastle.

With the Uruguayan suspended for 10 games after his already-infamous bite on Branislav Ivanovic, Daniel Sturridge led the line and scored two in a comprehensive win for the Reds.

Another double from Jordan Henderson, along with a goal apiece from Fabio Borini and Daniel Agger, made it six and Rodgers emphasized the importance of a team performance in his leading goalscorer's absence.

"It's very much about the collective, how we pass together, how we press together and how we penetrate together. We showed that today. We're definitely not a one-man team," he told reporters after the match.

"We had a couple of group meetings this week to narrow our focus. We needed to realign the focus on what was important and what's important was the football game today."

The former Swansea City boss proceeded to hail his players' response to what had been, by his own admission, a "traumatic" week, while he was eager to laud the efforts of another standout performer in Philippe Coutinho.

"It's been a traumatic week. We accepted that. Luis did wrong, he takes his punishment and we move on," Rodgers continued.

"We were brilliant from the first whistle, right until the end. To come here and get a victory of 6-0 is very impressive."

"[Coutinho] is already a top player. Might be small in stature but he's got all the passes in the bag. He's also got strength, you could see that for the third goal. Great thing is he will only get better."

Derby success vital in race for second, says Karanka

    275587hp2.jpg

The Spaniard was pleased at extending Atletico's barren run in the derby and their own advantage ahead of their city rivals, but is refusing to relax just yet
Real Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka praised his charges for securing a fundamental result with their 2-1 win against local rivals Atletico.

The direct competitors went head-to-head in a tussle for the domestic runners-up spot on Saturday, with los Blancos securing a decisive three points thanks to Angel Di Maria's winner.

And with the Spanish champions stretching the gap from third place to six points on the night, Karanka was heartened by the team's performance.

"We knew it would be a very tense match, also because Atletico have not beaten us for so long, so we played a derby for second place," the 39-year-old told reporters after the match. "The team played as a unit, fighting together with humility. We knew it would be an intense contest from the first minute. The whole team has done a spectacular job.

"We opted for [Sami] Khedira and Pepe today and they both had spectacular matches. We know our players and when we pick the starting XI, we know what we want to do.

"Still, we must continue doing our homework till the end of the league."

Karanka is hopeful Madrid can transfer the enthusiasm from their win to the upcoming Champions League semi-final clash with Borussia Dortmund, in the hope of overturning a 4-1 deficit from the first leg.

"We knew that the best way to go into Tuesday’s match was by playing well tonight. That is what we’ll take away; the work and effort of everyone," he added. "For Real Madrid. every single match of the season is important. We have to enjoy what we can from this win and as from tomorrow we'll think about Dortmund."
