United States 2-4 Belgium: Sloppy defensive play leads to friendly defeat

    284358hp2.jpg

CLEVELAND -- Jurgen Klinsmann wants the United States to face the best teams in the world prior to next year's World Cup in Brazil.

After the Americans were destroyed by Belgium 4-2 in Wednesday night's friendly at FirstEnergy Stadium, it's clear to see that the team is not quite ready to compete with the top-ranked nations.

Belgium forwards Kevin Mirallas, Marouane Fellaini and Christian Benteke took advantage of U.S. defensive mistakes to make it an ugly night for the hosts. Geoff Cameron and Clint Dempsey scored for the Yanks.

It was the first time the Americans had conceded three or more goals since a year ago, on May 30, 2012, when they were crushed 4-1 by Brazil in another high-profile friendly on U.S. soil.

The United States will face the world's second-best team in Germany in Washington D.C. on Sunday followed by three World Cup qualifying matches.

"We just have to tighten up," goalkeeper Tim Howard said. "Most of the teams we're going to play have firepower, so it's on us to put the other teams on our terms defensively. We should be the ones taking the space away or giving them space. We should be dictating the tempo of the game."

Klinsmann entered Cleveland with question marks surrounding his back four and he walked away without any answers after a shaky performance that included multiple mistakes that led to goals.

Still, the coach is happy to challenge the best teams the world has to offer.

"This is why we want to play teams like Belgium and like Germany and like Russia." Klinsmann said, "because there is so much that you can read from those games and there is so much you can see. Obviously, you want to win them. But I would rather play Belgium 10 more times than El Salvador 100 times because that is when you learn."

Right after striker Jozy Altidore failed to finish a golden opportunity from right in front of the visitors' net early in the first half, the Europeans went on the counterattack and capitalized on their first chance of the night.

Howard met Romelu Lukaku at the ball and the U.S. defenders failed to clear the rebound, leaving Mirallas with an opening to beat the on-looking duo of Cameron and Omar Gonzalez and chip the ball into the net.

Mirallas celebrated by making the motion of hitting a baseball out of the park, while Howard screamed at the top of his lungs at his disappointing back line.

"I'm angry pretty much by every goal," Howard said, smiling. "Any time there is a defensive breakdown you want to correct it, and at this level often times you get punished for it. That's a lesson to be learned."
Cameron would, however, make up for his mistake on the offensive end moments later.

The right back moved forward on a corner kick and headed in a beautiful assist from Dempsey, who headed the long corner back across the six-yard box. It was Cameron's first international goal of his career.

The spotlight remained on the U.S. defenders as the teams started the second half tied at one goal apiece before another costly mistake set the tone for the second half.

Despite being one of Klinsmann's most promising young players, Gonzalez handed Belgium a gift after playing a strong first touch right into the feet of Kevin De Bruyne, who delivered a cross to Benteke to take the lead. U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who had replaced Howard at halftime, had no shot of making a save as his Everton teammate was set up for a simple finish.

"I took the touch a little bit too far," Gonzalez said. "But that's not going to deter me from taking that touch again."

And things would only get worse from then on as it only took eight minutes for Belgium to add another goal when Fellaini rose for a header at the back post off a brilliant cross-field feed from Steven Defour.

Moments later, Defour would pick up another assist when he found the streaking Benteke on the right side of the pitch. The forward easily burned Beasley before beating Guzan.

Klinsmann will more than likely rethink his back four ahead of the Germany game.

Without Timothy Chandler and Steve Cherundolo, both of whom decided to stay in Germany where they play in the Bundesliga, Klinsmann started Cameron, Gonzalez, Beasley and Clarence Goodson.

Prior to the game, Beasley was honored for earning his 100th cap with the national team. He became only the 13th U.S. international to accomplish the feat.

"I definitely felt the love today, it's great to see that they appreciate my style of football. I'm here to stay," Beasley insisted. "I'm not here just to get my 100th cap, I want to keep playing."

One notable roster omission for the match was Landon Donovan, who is second all-time in U.S. soccer history with 144 international appearance, including 133 starts. The LA Galaxy midfielder had stepped away from the game for a few weeks after the 2012 MLS season wrapped up and hasn't played for the United States since.

Also missing was captain Carlos Bocanegra, who has served as the team's captain since 2007 but lost his spot on the squad the last two sets of qualifiers. Klinsmann has turned to Dempsey to wear the armband.

Proving his leadership on the pitch, Dempsey ran in for the spot kick after Eddie Johnson had drawn a handball in the box. The Texas native beat goalkeeper Simon Mignolet to the left for his 33rd career goal in international play.

England 1-1 Republic of Ireland: Pressure grows on Hodgson despite Lampard leveler

England came from behind to muster a 1-1 draw against a combative and organized Republic of Ireland side at Wembley on Wednesday night, as the Three Lions extended their winless run against the Boys in Green to five games and 33 years.

Ireland took the lead through Shane Long, whose first-half flicked header soared into the top corner, before Frank Lampard levelled the scores just 10 minutes later, prodding the ball past goalkeeper David Forde.

Wayne Rooney was provided with the chance to let his football do the talking, picked for his first start since April, and partnered in-form Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge. Ashley Cole was given the honor of leading the team out to celebrate the 100th cap he picked up against Brazil in February.

Giovanni Trapattoni stuck with his tried and trusted 4-4-2, with Long and Robbie Keane leading the line and Wigan's James McCarthy providing craft alongside the steel of Stoke's Glenn Whelan in midfield.

The build-up to the match was cast in the shadow of the events at Lansdowne Road in 1995, when rioting forced the match to be abandoned. Roy Hodgson's plea for calm and respect had the required effect, with a friendly atmosphere created around Wembley, barring an ill-conceived Irish flare.

The match itself began at walking pace, with both sides feeling the effects of gruelling domestic campaigns and taking time to reacquaint themselves with their respective countrymen. England struggled to control the ball, while Ireland – through Long – looked especially dangerous on the break.

It was the diminutive frontman who opened the scoring for the away side. Darting in front of Glen Johnson, Long glanced Seamus Coleman's pin-point cross beyond the reach of Joe Hart and into the top corner of the net.

England began to show a little more intent after going behind, and it soon paid dividends. Sturridge broke down the left flank and when Sean St Ledger failed to clear the 23-year-old's cross, Lampard was on hand to cutely poke the ball past Forde from close range.

With Ireland having enjoyed a large slice of possession in the opening 45 minutes, the Three Lions pressed a little higher and a little more aggressively in the second period. A quick transition saw Theo Walcott released, but his cross was cleared by Coleman from beneath his own crossbar as Cole lurked dangerously.

Hodgson's side did not burst to life again until until past the hour-mark, with Jermain Defoe – who replaced the injured Sturridge – feeding Walcott once more. This time the Arsenal striker fired a low effort at goal which was confidently pushed away by Forde.

Ireland threatened to claim victory when substitute James McClean's deflected cross was bundled towards goal by Jon Walters, but the Stoke forward's header was blocked on the line by his own teammate, Simon Cox, who was offside.

With the match heading for a stalemate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was presented with a chance to score a late winner, racing onto Rooney's deflected pass, but was thwarted by the onrushing Forde. With time running out, the Millwall goalkeeper then denied Walcott with another brave stop.

In the end it was a case of new day, same problems for England as it once again faltered against competitive opposition. Devoid of creativity and unable to exert any authority on the match, Hodgson's team has a lot of work to do before World Cup 2014 qualification resumes.

Ecuador 2-4 Germany: Podolski and Bender at the double

    284264hp2.jpg

An unfamiliar Germany team recorded a straightforward 4-2 win over Ecuador to get its tour of the USA underway in Florida on Thursday.

The Nationalelf roared into a convincing four-goal lead in the first half, with Lukas Podolski and Lars Bender exchanging doubles before Antonio Valencia pulled one back just before the break.

The South Americans pushed for a route back into the match and eventually got their goal through Walter Ayovi's free kick with less than 10 minutes to play.

The game had barely started when Germany took the lead. Some lax defending from Gabriel Achilier gave Podolski the chance to pounce and the Arsenal striker drilled home the opener after just nine seconds.

Ecuador had started very sloppily and, before it had a chance to settle itself, Joachim Low's side had doubled the advantage. Sidney Sam, making his international debut, slipped a ball into the path of Bender, who sidefooted a second past Maximo Banguera.

It was fast becoming one of Germany's most impressive friendly performances in recent memory and barring a Per Mertesacker slip under pressure from Jefferson Montero, the South Americans had no answer to their European counterparts.

And, sure enough, it was soon three. Max Kruse cut the ball back into the path of Podolski, who duly slammed home his second of the match.

It was all too easy for Germany and just before the 25-minute mark, it had a four-goal advantage, with a prolonged period of possession resulting in Roman Neustadter squaring the ball to Bender, who drilled home his second from distance.

With the match effectively won during its opening quarter, Germany took its foot off the gas and Ecuador soon was able to showcase the form which has seen it rise to 10th in the FIFA Ranking.

Jefferson Montero ran at the backtracking Benedikt Howedes and unleashed a brilliant effort from the edge of the box which cannoned off the crossbar, with Rene Adler well beaten.

Felipe Caicedo then twisted and turned in the box, leaving Heiko Westermann for dead, but failed to get the necessary power behind his eventual shot, allowing the Hamburg keeper to make an easy save.

Valencia then stung Adler's palms with a ferocious effort from distance as half-time approached but went one better seconds later, driving an effort into the back of the net from the edge of the box.

Seconds after the restart, the Manchester United winger tested Adler once more with a powerful effort from a narrow angle. Germany had totally switched off and their opponents were looking dangerous.

The former Leverkusen keeper was forced into a number of saves, denying Montero twice and Segundo Castillo, whose long-range effort seemed to be flying in, before Westermann made an incredible block to stop Elvis Bone's goal-bound strike.

Germany, meanwhile, was becoming increasingly frustrated with Ecuador's rough tackling. Julian Draxler had a penalty denied after a robust tackle from Achilier, while tempers flared when Podolski was scythed down by Bone.

Eventually, the South Americans got the goal their second-half efforts deserved, with Adler palming Ayovi's free kick into the side of the net late on but Germany was able to hang on for the win.

Sao Paulo not interested in selling Ganso to PSG

The talented attacking midfielder has long been linked with a move to Europe but his current club is not interested in selling one of its main men.Sao Paulo’s director of football has poured cold water over suggestions that Ganso is on the verge of a move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Brazil international, who has long been linked with a move to Europe, is believed to have caught the eye of the Ligue 1 champion, but Adalberto Batista says the club has no interest in doing business.“We have very good relations with Paris Saint-Germain, a good relationship with Leonardo, but Sao Paulo is not interested in letting Ganso go,” he told Radio ESPN.

However, Batista did admit that circumstances could change if the club receives an offer that it cannot refuse for the 23-year-old.“Of course that is what we said about Luís Fabiano and other players apply here too. I can't say that if there is a big offer we will say no,” he added. “But that's it, the offer needs to be one we can't refuse. But honestly, I don't think Ganso wants to leave now he is recovering his best form."

Ganso joined the Soberano in 2012 after starting his career and establishing himself at Santos, where he made 162 appearances and scored 34 goals.

Sturridge out of Brazil friendly, confirms England boss Hodgson

The striker was stretchered from the field early on his first international start and faces several weeks of rehabilitation.England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed that Daniel Sturridge will not face Brazil on Sunday, and fears he could face "a few weeks" out after possibly damaging his ankle ligaments.

The striker, making his first start for the Three Lions, was withdrawn after 33 minutes against Republic of Ireland after appearing to roll over on his ankle and being stretchered from the field.

"He's not going to [play] Brazil, unfortunately," Hodgson told ITV. "It's ligament damage, we think. We are not 100 percent sure. I fear it will keep him out for a few weeks. The surgeon is with him now and he will be contacting Liverpool [shortly]."

Sturridge went into the game in fine form for Liverpool, scoring six goals in his previous five outings, and Hodgson lamented the injury hampering the striker's impressive start at Wembley.

"He had a brilliant start to the game and we were really sad to lose him," Hodgson continued. "I think we missed him as Jermain Defoe hasn't played for a while and is also suffering from a slight injury problem."

Jermain Defoe replaced the Liverpool man on the night, but will face competition from Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck for a starting berth to face the five-time world champion.

Florentino Perez: Bale was born to play for Real Madrid

After a stunning season at White Hart Lane the winger has attracted serious interest from Los Blancos, and the president has dropped the strongest hint yet of making an offer Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has further increased speculation linking Tottenham star Gareth Bale with a move to Santiago Bernabue, insisting he was "was born to play" for the club.

The 23-year-old scored 21 Premier League goals last season as Spurs finished fifth in the Premier League, and he is expected to sign a new contract worth 130,000 pounds at White Hart Lane this summer.

However, Bale's agent, Jonathan Barnett, admitted on Wednesday that the attacker would consider any offer from the Liga giant.

Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata, meanwhile, has hailed Bale as "one of the best players in the world" and backed him to be a success if he joins the club.

"He would be a good signing for the club," he told Marca. Bale is one of the best players in the world and at Real Madrid we always have the best. I am convinced that if the club want him he would be a great signing."

Last week, Real Madrid director of football Zinedine Zidane told Goal.com he rates the Wales international alongside La Liga legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"I have been watching Tottenham for the very reason that Bale has been playing," he said. "Aside from Ronaldo and Messi, who are the top players, I must admit that he is the footballer who impressed me most."

Pellegrini: I have a verbal agreement with Manchester City

    211554_heroa.jpg

After guiding Malaga to the last eight of the Champions League, the Chilean has confirmed it is almost certain he will be in charge at the Etihad Stadium next season
Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed he has reached a verbal agreement to become the next Manchester City manager.

The Chilean has long been touted as the replacement to Roberto Mancini, who was sacked earlier in May, and already confirmed he would be leaving the south Spain side at the end of the season.

Pellegrini guided Malaga to fourth in La Liga this season as well as the quarterfinals of the Champions League, and it looks almost certain he will be in charge at the Etihad Stadium next season.

"I have a verbal agreement with them and I hope it is carried out," he told television channel Canal Sur.

The 59-year-old confirmed nothing has been signed yet but it looks to be a matter of time before he puts pen to paper.

"As of today, I [haven't yet] a signed contract," he added.

"It is true that Manchester City have shown a lot of interest that I become their coach and I have had conversations with them.

"Until things have been signed, you cannot say everything is completely done."

    Rami hints at Valencia exit

    230662_heroa.jpg

The defender continues to be linked with the Mestalla exit door but revealed his current club is determined to retain his services Adil Rami has admitted to having "desires elsewhere" after hinting at leaving Valencia once again this summer.

The France international has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks and has enhanced his reputation in recent times with his stellar displays for los Che.
But the cash-strapped club remain determined to keep hold of one of their prized assets and though Rami revealed the specific release clause in his contract, the 27-year-old remains unsure whether he will still be at Mestalla or not come the start of next season.

"I have learned a lot in Valencia and Spain. I am here today but that does not mean to say that I do not have desires elsewhere. I read that Valencia pushed me towards the exit, this is totally wrong. I broke my contract with my agent in February,” he told RMC.“I had a good laugh because on Tuesday I had a meeting with Valencia directors and it is impossible for them to let me go. I have a clause between 10 and 12 million euros so we will see what is best for me moving forward.”

Rami joined Valencia in January 2011 and after spending the remainder of the 2011/12 season on loan at Lille he has become a star performer over the last two seasons, making 74 appearances in the process.
His current deal runs until June 2016.

Suarez opens the door to Liverpool exit amid Real Madrid interest

    265339_heroa.jpg

The Liverpool striker, who is contracted until 2016, says constant criticism from journalists is affecting his time in England, hinting it could drive him away from Anfield Luis Suarez has opened the door to a Liverpool exit after admitting he cannot take constant criticism of his conduct and is proud to be linked with Real Madrid .

Suarez is believed to be a target for Real Madrid as Gonzalo Higuain looks increasingly likely to leave the Liga runner-up during the summer, and the 26-year-old admits such interest in himself and fellow compatriot Edinson Cavani is flattering.

"Saying no to Real Madrid is very difficult," he told Sport 890 AM.

"I think that's a reason for Uruguayans to feel proud, but there are no formal offers yet.

"I talked to Brendan Rodgers. He knows what I want and understands my situation."

Suarez is currently serving a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic; the incident the latest in a long line of misdemeanors the striker has committed.

The striker admitted that constant negative press is affecting his time in England.

"I worked too hard to having to continue listening to the criticism I get from English journalists," he continued.

"I love Liverpool, but I'm not prepared to keep taking all this criticism.

Neymar: It will be an honor to face Cristiano Ronaldo

The Brazilian also claimed that his religious beliefs gave him the “wisdom” to join the Liga champions ahead of his move to Camp Nou this summer New Barcelona signing Neymar says he is already relishing the chance to come up against Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 21-year-old hailed the ability of the Bernabeu star and said he hopes to come out on top when his new side does battle with its Clasico rival next season.“Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player," Neymar told reporters. "He is skillful and it will be an honor to face him. Hopefully I can win."

Neymar will join the newly crowned Liga champions this summer and the Brazil international also claimed his religious beliefs helped him to decide on making the switch to Spain.“I talked to God to give me wisdom and directed me the right way, so I chose Barcelona," he said. “I chose to join Barcelona because it was a wish that came out of my heart. Change is always difficult, but I hope to be able to adapt as soon as possible."

Madrid was amongst a number of sides who were also chasing Neymar's signature until his transfer from Santos to Camp Nou was officially confirmed last week.

Ribery: I would turn down Real Madrid

The Frenchman has insisted that a summer move is not an option for him as he's keen to stay with the Champions League winner.Franck Ribery has stressed that he is happy with life at Bayern Munich and added that he is not interested in a move to Real Madrid.

The France international was close to joining the Santiago Bernabeu side in the past and Madrid president Florentino Perez's announcement that Zinedine Zidane will be in charge of the club's transfers from this summer fuelled speculation that it could make another move for Ribery ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.

However, Ribery has insisted that Zidane can save himself the time of getting in touch with the 30-year-old as he has no intention to leave his current club.

"If Zidane were to contact me, I would tell him that I'm feeling very good at Bayern and I think that he'd understand me," the winger told RMC.

"I almost joined Madrid in the past, but it did not happen and I am very pleased that I stayed at Bayern in the end."

Ribery has a contract with Bayern until June 2015, but he is believed to be close to inking a two-year extension to his current deal.

Bale would listen to Real Madrid offer, insists agent

    281894_heroa.jpg

Los Blancos are being urged to step up their interest in the Welsh winger by their supporters and the Madrid press, and they may be encouraged further by the latest declarations Gareth Bale would listen to any transfer offer from Real Madrid, his agent has revealed.

The 23-year-old scored 21 Premier League goals last season as Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League, and he is expected to sign a new contract worth €150,000 (£130,000) per week at White Hart Lane this summer.

But with Neymar having moved to Barcelona, La Liga rivals Madrid are said to have stepped up their interest in Bale, and his agent, Jonathan Barnett, has encouraged a move.

"If Florentino Perez is interested in Gareth Bale it would be an honour and we would listen, but his contract is with Tottenham" he told Futboleros on Marca TV.

"We are not free to speak with anybody at the moment, that's where we are. I don't know if there has been any offer, what I know is that the player has three years left on his contract."

Neymar moved to Camp Nou for a deal, all considered, thought to total around €52.5 million (£45m), but Barnett believes his client would demand a higher figure.

"He's worth more. He's better than Neymar, he's proved himself in one of the best leagues in the world."

And the representative also hinted that Madrid should have prioritised Bale, rather than making a late bid for the Brazilian.

"I would hope that any club that wants him wants him not because they lost Neymar, but because he is their first choice. Whatever Neymar costs, Gareth Bale is worth more," he concluded.

Aquilani expects Jovetic to leave Fiorentina

    264431_heroa.jpg

The Italian believes his teammate is destined to depart Artemio Franchi as Juventus and Arsenal continue to be linked with a move Fiorentina midfielder Alberto Aquilani has revealed that he expects Stevan Jovetic to leave the club this summer.

Jovetic’s future has been the subject of speculation for some time, with reports continuing to link the forward with a summer move to Serie A champion Juventus and Premier League outfit Arsenal.Aquilani feels that this summer will see the departure of his teammate after revealing that the club told Jovetic he was free to decide his own future once the season drew to a close.

“I think at this point [Jovetic] is going to leave,” Aquilani told reporters ahead of Italy’s friendly with San Marino on Friday.“Last year they promised if he stayed another season then he could choose his future. Aside from being a teammate, he is also a great person who would do well at any club.”

The former Liverpool man, who excelled in Fiorentina's strong Serie A campaign last season, went on to refute claims he had failed to live up to his own potential following a disappointing spell at Anfield earlier in his career.“It’s easy to say that [I struggled], but there were injuries, strange contracts and coaches who came and went," he continued.

“I think it’s a little superficial to say I never lived up to my potential, but I accept it. I am still young and have much to give.”The 28-year-old also feels that AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri would be an ideal candidate to take over at Roma as rumors abound that he is poised to replace Aurelio Andreazzoli at Stadio Olimpico.

“He’s a great coach and a great person. If he were to leave Milan, I think he’d be the right man for Roma,” said Aquilani.
