Brazil 2-1 Uruguay: Late Paulinho header books Confeds Cup final berth

    291568hp2.jpg

Paulinho popped up with a late winner as Brazil progressed to the Confederations Cup final with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over a gritty Uruguay side on Wednesday night.

An underwhelming game, which had featured a first-half penalty miss from Diego Forlan, appeared to be heading for extra time, with Edinson Cavani cancelling out Fred's opener for the hosts.

However, Paulinho nodded home a Neymar corner with just four minutes of normal time remaining to send the Belo Horizonte crowd into ecstasy, and leave Uruguay heartbroken.

Brazil looked weighed down by the almost tangible sense of expectancy among a partisan crowd packed into the Estadio Mineirao.

However, even the significant pressure the hosts were under could not explain precisely why Selecao centre-half David Luiz took leave of his senses and elected to haul Diego Lugano to the floor as the pair jostled for position at a corner 14 minutes in.

Luiz's stupidity really should have resulted in Uruguay taking the lead, but Forlan squandered the opportunity to score against the country in which he plies his trade, the Internacional attacker seeing his low spot kick turned around the post by Julio Cesar.

That fine stop drew a thunderous roar from the crowd but, in truth, they were given little else to cheer about during a desperately fractious opening quarter in Belo Horizonte.

Hulk worked himself into a fantastic position just before the half-hour mark, after a neat one-two with Neymar, but the Zenit forward ballooned his effort over the bar.

Brazil's mounting frustration then threatened to get the better of them, with Luiz Gustavo picking up a deserved booking for following through on Cristian Rodriguez, but they made a crucial breakthrough just before the interval.

Paulinho picked out Neymar's clever run in behind the Uruguay defence with a measured chip into the area and the Brazil No.10 controlled the ball on his chest before flicking it goalwards. Fernando Muslera saved well with his outstretched left arm but Fred was on hand to slice home the rebound with the aid of his shin. It was a fittingly scrappy opener, given what had gone before.

Uruguay replied in somewhat similar circumstances just three minutes into the second half, with Thiago Silva - of all players - inexplicably passing the ball straight to Cavani, after a game of pinball in the Brazilian box. The in-demand Napoli striker took a quick touch before beating Julio Cesar with a low strike into the far left corner.

Uruguay very nearly went ahead midway through the second period through a Luis Suarez header that was deflected just over, before Fred flashed a spectacular - but wayward - volley that never looked likely to trouble Muslera.

With both sides horribly devoid of ideas, extra time appeared inevitable, but man of the match Paulinho rose at the back post to meet Neymar's deep corner and beat Muslera with a fine downward header to put the hosts into Sunday's tournament decider.

Gerrard welcomes 'healthy' goalkeeper competition at Liverpool

    291319_heroa.jpg

Following Simon Mignolet's arrival from Sunderland, the club captain believes a rivalry with current No.1 Pepe Reina will only serve as a positive for the Reds next season Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes the arrival of Simon Mignolet will provide important competition to current first-choice goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

The 25-year-old sealed a switch from Sunderland on Tuesday, prompting further speculation that his Spanish rival is heading for the Anfield exit.

Reina has been linked with a move to former club Barcelona following Victor Valdes hinting at a Camp Nou departure, and admitted he is open to a move to a "bigger club", but Gerrard is sure the Liverpool No.1 will stay and compete with Mignolet.

"I think who becomes the Liverpool No.1 is going to be Brendan Rodgers' decision," Gerrard told Sky Sports.

"I think he has gone on the record and said he wants to keep Pepe Reina, who is a world-class goalie - and Mignolet had a fantastic season as well so competition for places is going to be really healthy.

"It is going to be an interesting one, we are going to have to keep our eye on it.

"I know Pepe won't give up the No.1 without a fight. I have experienced him in top, top form and I think on his day he's in the top five keepers in the world so it's going to be an interesting one to keep the eye on."

Mignolet is Liverpool's fourth summer signing following the arrivals of Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Kolo Toure, while Goal exclusively revealed the club have made a move for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

    Neymar rubbishes Lugano diving claims

    291603_heroa.jpg

The forward defended himself after helping his nation reach the Confederations Cup final on Wednesday Neymar has strongly refuted claims of diving from Diego Lugano after Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Uruguay on Wednesday.

The Selecao recorded a 2-1 victory over their South American rivals in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup thanks to goals from Fred and Paulinho, either side of an Edinson Cavani strike, to reach the final of the competition for a third consecutive time.

But the Barcelona forward was unhappy with comments made by Uruguay defender Lugano prior to the game after he claimed that the former Santos player was guilty of diving.

"He who has a mouth speaks what he wants. This will not hurt me. What matters to me most is to help my team-mates and the team win," he told reporters.

The 21-year-old then acknowledged just how close the contest was, with nerves appearing to get the better of Brazil in the early stages of the game in front of an expectant Belo Horizonte crowd.

“It was typical of a semi-final game. We managed to control the game. We knew it would be hard but we got the win and that was the most important thing," he added.

Brazil striker Fred was also in high spirits after his side’s victory and defended Neymar over accusations of simulation.

"The Uruguayans talked a lot before the game, some [Lugano] attacked Neymar. We beat them on the pitch, and that's our answer," he told reporters after the match.

“Criticism? As I always say, I only respond on the pitch, but the crowd today was great with me. It was amazing.”

David Luiz tips 'complete' Paulinho to shine for Tottenham

    291613_heroa.jpg

The midfielder is set to join the north London side after the club agreed a €20 million fee with Corinthians, and his Brazil team-mate feels he will adapt well to English football Chelsea centre-back David Luiz has tipped his Brazil team-mate Paulinho to shine in the Premier League ahead of a proposed move to Tottenham.

The north London outfit have agreed a €20 million deal with Corinthians for the versatile midfielder, with the move expected to be completed following the Selecao's involvement in the Confederations Cup.

Paulinho notched his second goal of the tournament four minutes from time in Wednesday's 2-1 semi-final win over Uruguay to send Brazil into Sunday's final, and Luiz is excited at the prospect of the 24-year-old plying his trade in England.

He told Goal: "Paulinho is a fantastic player, both defending and attacking. He is complete, so he can come to England. It's a great moment for him."

The win over Oscar Tabarez's men keeps up Brazil's 100 per cent record in the competition where they will now face either Spain or Italy on Sunday, and Luiz feels the squad are continuing to improve as they advance in the tournament.

"It's growing game-by-game but sometimes you cannot play the game you want with a lot of opportunities and a lot of possession," Luiz explained. "But that's why the Brazilian team is now more mature, because it can play open games or games like today, which was a very different game.

"I think Uruguay did a great job with two lines deep so you can't create a lot of opportunities to score but the team has matured well.

"It's a dream come true [to reach the final]. I think it is a special moment for us, but we want to win.

"I am so happy because I can play a final with Brazil in the Maracana. Whether we play against Spain or Italy, it will be a difficult game for us."

Lennon expecting Wanyama to leave Celtic

The Hoops boss has confirmed the club have accepted an offer from Southampton for their midfielder but is expecting further bids as the race to sign the Kenyan hots upCeltic manager Neil Lennon says he is expecting Victor Wanyama to leave the club this summer.

Goal understands Liverpool, Everton and Cardiff have joined Southampton in the race to sign the midfielder after the Scottish champions accepted a bid from the Saints for the midfielder.

Lennon says he thinks a transfer to St Mary's would be a good move for his player but is expecting more bids from other interested clubs.

"What we have done is accepted a bid from Southampton, who are a very good club, a very progressive club," he said.

"Personally, I think it would be a very good move for Victor in terms of his career going forward but there seems to be other bodies who want to block the deal.

"The ball is firmly in the court of Victor's representatives. You don't know what's around the corner. I would imagine there would be other interested parties but we've had no confirmation from any other clubs yet."

Wanyama's representatives have accused the Scottish champions of trying to force the midfielder into a transfer, but Lennon says he feels Southampton’s offer is good.

"The fact that we have accepted a bid tells you that we feel that matches our valuation of the player,” he added.

"We don't know where we are with it at the minute, there seems to be a bit of a stand-off.

"We felt the money was right for us, a good business deal for the club. Whether it resurfaces again, I don't know."

Liverpool & Tottenham make moves for Benteke

    264161_heroa.jpg

The Premier League big hitters have made enquiries for the Belgian striker, who has yet to agree a new contract with Aston Villa after a terrific first season in England Liverpool and Tottenham have made enquiries for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, Goal understands.

The Premier League big hitters are both prepared to offer the Belgium international a bumper rise on his current €24,000-a-week terms this summer as well as a major playing role.

Liverpool are believed to have registered their interest in Benteke as they prepare for the possible departure of Luis Suarez, with Real Madrid leading the chase for the Merseysiders' prize asset.

As reported by Goal, Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has been assured that he will be given a large portion of the €47 million-plus Suarez fee to buy a proven centre-forward if the Uruguayan is successful in engineering a move this summer.

Spurs have also targeted Benteke as they prepare to reinforce a front line that was found wanting last season. The Londoners have currently dropped their interest in No.1 target Leandro Damiao and turned their attention to high-calibre alternatives.

Benteke had an outstanding debut campaign in England after signing for Villa last year in an €10 million deal, scoring 19 top-flight goals to help maintain the club's Premier League status.

The 22-year-old has three years remaining on the contract he signed 12 months ago but there is a growing acceptance among the Villa hierarchy that they are vulnerable if the powerhouse forward pushes for a move.

Villa manager Paul Lambert revealed recently that Benteke has been offered an improved contract but his future remains in doubt while it remains unsigned. Borussia Dortmund are also closely monitoring developments.

Speaking during the international break at the end of last month, Benteke admitted he may demand a transfer this summer. "If Aston Villa say I must stay, I won't necessarily accept that. I do not in any way want to feel I didn't get the most out of my career."

Asked about the possibility of joining Arsenal, who had been linked with a move for him, the striker said: "If the chance comes up for me to join a club like Arsenal, I'm convinced we can reach a compromise where everyone comes out a winner."

It is understood that Benteke would be attracted to a move to Anfield but he might have to bide his time as the Suarez saga could drag on all summer.

Spurs are looking at other striker alternatives, including Barcelona's David Villa, Saint-Etienne's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Roma's Pablo Osvaldo and Porto's Jackson Martinez.

    Lyon reveal Gomis bids

    281082_heroa.jpg

The club have admitted their star striker could move on this summer, with a number of interested parties registering their interest in his services Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed that his club have received three offers for Bafetimbi Gomis, with a fourth believed to be imminent.

Although Aulas didn’t reveal the potential suitors, the France international has recently been linked with Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen and Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

"We had three proposals and we will probably be receive a fourth soon. He could gain a greater financial package than with OL. The proposal on offer will make him the envy of many players,” he told L’Equipe.

“We look forward to his return from holidays to discuss. His agents will explain everything about the potential moves."

The 27-year-old's contract at Stade de Gerland expires next summer but Lyon could still hold out for a fee in the region of €12 million.

Gomis enjoyed a successful season for les Gones last term, scoring 20 goals as he helped his side to a third-placed finish, and a spot in the final qualifying round of the Champions League.

Capel keen on Atletico Madrid switch

    159254_heroa.jpg

The former Sevilla man has revealed that a return to Spain would interest him after labelling los Rojiblancos a "great club"Sporting winger Diego Capel has admitted his interest in a summer move to Atletico Madrid.

The 25-year-old joined the Portuguese giants in 2011 after spending the previous seven years with Sevilla, but has been linked with a return to Spain with Diego Simeone's men.

Leoes endured a disappointing 2012/13 Primeira Liga campaign, in which they finished in a lowly seventh position, and with rumours gathering over the 25-year-old's future, Capel has done little to dampen speculation.

"It always makes you proud when you are linked to such great clubs as Atletico," Capel told AS.

"I always want to continue growing and that is a great club. Now I do not know what will happen in the future, but any player would like to play there."

Last season Capel made 19 appearances for Sporting, scoring six goals in the process. He has been capped twice by Spain.

Gerrard on course for pre-season return following shoulder surgery
    273817_heroa.jpg

Six weeks after undergoing shoulder surgery, the Liverpool midfielder is on course to return to fitness in time for the club's pre-season training next month Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard insists he is recovering well from shoulder surgery and should be back in action in time for pre-season training.

The 33-year-old featured in every minute of the Reds’ Premier League season up until the 36th game, when he ended the campaign early in order to undergo surgery on a long-standing injury.

Six weeks later, the England international is now almost ready to return to training, and admits he cannot wait to get back in action.

"It's going well and feeling strong," the midfielder told the club's official website.

"I'm six weeks down the line with the rehabilitation from surgery.

"I'm not too far away, maybe a couple of weeks away from contact and being back in full training if everything goes well. I'm looking forward to it.

"It's probably the longest break I've had at this time of year - being out of the game for six weeks is enough, I'm itching to get back."

Gerrard enjoyed his best season in four years last term, scoring 10 goals in 36 Premier League games.

    Casillas: Mourinho made me cry

    286354_heroa.jpg

The Blancos skipper admits he has suffered after being consigned to the bench for five months by the Portuguese coach last season Iker Casillas has revealed that his treatment at the hands of Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho reduced him to tears.

The Spain international was ostracised during the second half of last season, and forced to spent five months sitting on the bench after losing his place to Diego Lopez through injury.

The demotion of a club icon such as Casillas to the role of the reserve caused great consternation in the Spanish capital and the legendary goalkeeper freely admits that the situation affected him deeply.

"I've cried," Casillas admitted in an interview with Fifa.com, "I've suffered, I've been unwell, I've had sleepless nights."

Casillas admitted that so upset was he by the situation that he considered leaving the club he has represented for the entirety of his professional career before Mourinho eventually departed for Chelsea.

"I'm a 'Madridista' right down to my soul and above all else, what matters to me is the club," he explained.

"I would love to retire at Real Madrid, but I will not make problems if a coach does not have me."

Casillas has retained his No.1 spot for Spain in the Confederations Cup this summer despite his lack of playing time for his club, and he confesses it has been a relief to be playing again.

"I have regained happiness," he enthused. "It was not easy but I'm another Iker Casillas now.

"After five months, it takes some time until everything comes back to you, but, luckily, I have had a great deal of help of my team-mates and coach [Vicente del Bosque] and that's important when it comes to having to start over again."

Guarin wants to stay at Inter - agent

    283923_heroa.jpg

It has been suggested that the Nerazzurri would consider cashing in on the highly-rated Colombia international but his representative has denied the reports Fredy Guarin's agent has revealed that his client wants to remain at Inter - despite persistent talk of a move away from San Siro.

The Colombia international has been linked with Premier League duo Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, as well as wealthy Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, with reports suggesting that the Nerazzurri are open to cashing in on one of their most prized assets in order to fund new coach Walter Mazzarri's overhaul of a squad that finished ninth last season.

However, Guarin's representative, Marcelo Ferreyra, says that the versatile midfielder has no desire to leave Appiano Gentile.

"He wants to stay at Inter," the agent told Internews.it. "He's happy and he wants to become a champion in their colours.

"Manchester United, Tottenham and Anzhi are not part of our sporting project. Going to other clubs doesn't interest us.

"My client wants to win in the shirt of Inter."

The 26-year-old Guarin joined the Nerazzurri from Porto - initially on loan - during last year's January transfer window.

Higuain close to completing Arsenal move, admits agent

    287646_heroa.jpg

The Gunners have been tracking the Real Madrid striker for several weeks, and his agent now expects them to beat off interest from Juventus to complete the deal
Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain is on the verge of completing a transfer to Arsenal, his agent has revealed.

It emerged on Friday that the Gunners are close to sealing a €24 million move for the 25-year-old, having already agreed on a salary of £100,000-a-week.

Juventus had been in the race to sign the Argentine, but their impending capture of Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez suggests they have dropped out of the running, a notion that has been confirmed by Higuain's representative.

"I think that Higuain is now closer to Arsenal," Nicolas Higuain told TuttoMercatoWeb."Juventus are a great club, but Gonzalo is too expensive for them."Napoli were also thought be considering Higuain as a replacement for Edinson Cavani should the Uruguayan complete his anticipated move to Real Madrid, but the player's brother admits Arsenal are leading the chase.

"Napoli are a strong side and that place represents a lot for Argentines," he continued. "Saying that, I can’t deny that Gonzalo is now close to Arsenal."

Pedro backs Neymar to make instant impact at Barcelona

    287133_heroa.jpg

The Spain international believes that the presence of fellow Brazilians Dani Alves and Adriano in Catalunya will help the 21-year-old adapt quickly Barcelona attacker Pedro believes new team-mate Neymar is more than capable of making an instant impact at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana last month confirmed the signing of the Brazil international from Santos for a fee of €57 million and great things are expected of the 21-year-old, particularly in light of his subsequent stellar showings for the Selecao at the Confederations Cup.

Pedro acknowledges that Neymar will need some time to settle in Catalunya but he still expects the forward to shine next season.

"He will adapt very quickly," the Spain star told El Mundo Deportivo. "It is true that you need an adjustment period to get to know the game in another country: how everything is, the city etc.

"But, like I said, I think he will adapt fairly quickly. He has very good friends there, such as Dani Alves and Adriano, and that will help.

"I think he is also happy and excited about playing for Barca, so hopefully be an important player for us."

Johan Cruyff has suggested that the Catalans should cash in on Lionel Messi now that they have acquired Neymar, but Pedro can see no reason why they would allow the four-time Ballon d'Or winner to leave.

"He is the best in the world," the winger enthused. "It is a privilege and a pleasure to have him with us.

"This is demonstrated in every game and it's amazing. You cannot compare any player in the world today with Messi."

As for his own future at Camp Nou, Pedro revealed that, despite the increased competition for places in Catalunya, he would like to spend the rest of his career with the club.

"I want to continue at Barca many years - and I hope to," he admitted. "I know it's difficult because Barca will always demand a lot - you always have to play at the highest level - but the truth is that today I only think about the national team and Barca."

    289976_heroa.jpg

Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin insists they will not part with their attacking star for less than €30m, with Liverpool also interested in the player Shakhtar Donetsk CEO Sergei Palkin has confirmed that Borussia Dortmund have made a €23 million bid for attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian star has long been liked with a move to Premier League outfit Liverpool, with Brendan Rodgers including the player in his plans for a £42m summer spending spree.

Dortmund have no leaped to the front of the queue for his signature by tabling a bid for his services, but Palkin has stressed that Shakhtar will accept nothing less than €30m for the 24-year-old, even though he failed to turn out for pre-season training for the Ukraine giants.

“I don’t know where Mkhitaryan is, now; solely his agent knows this," Palkin told Terrikon."Borussia offered €23m for the midfielder. I contacted Mkhitaryan’s agent yesterday. I wrote to him about the official position of the club."We are prepared to sell Mkhitaryan for €30m; this offer stands for the next 10 days. If Mkhitaryan wishes to leave, they have to pay this amount for him."
