Brazil will have much tougher tests at World Cup - Scolari
    285387_heroa.jpg

The Selecao boss hopes that the experience of winning the Confederations Cup will prepare the team and the fans for the challenge of contesting the Fifa showpiece next summer Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari celebrated his team’s Confederations Cup final victory over Spain, but maintained that much more difficult challenges lie ahead if they are to repeat the feat during the World Cup next summer.

The tournament hosts romped to a 3-0 win over the defending world and European champions inside of a particularly deafening Maracana to clinch the trophy for the third straight time, and fourth overall.

But with the 2014 World Cup also set to take place in Brazil in little under a year, Scolari believes that the Selecao need to ride the momentum created by their on-pitch performances and the backing of their fans.“We did not predict this. It was a path that we needed to take, but we knew that this match was not even close to what we have to play through next year,” he stated post-match.

“It’s going to be harder. But our path will be a little bit better to walk. [The win] is going to create a better situation and better environment.“Also the support that we take from the crowd inside and outside the pitch is excellent. We need to always get this from the country. That way we can evolve and grow with good work."

Scolari was in charge of the Portugal national team that hosted Euro 2004 but lost 1-0 in the final to Greece, an upset that was still fresh on his mind.“[Euro 2004] was a big frustration for the Portuguese people and for me,” recalled the Brazilian trainer.

“But this kind of thing happens in life. I won this time with Brazil, and this group of players I have is amazing.”

Official: PSV sign Maher from AZ

    289749_heroa.jpg

The promising youngster will continue his career at the Eindhoven side and will ink a contract until June 2018 with his new club PSV have announced the signing of Netherlands international Adam Maher from AZ for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old will sign a five-year deal with the Eredivisie giants upon the completion of his medical on Monday, with the fee believed to be in the region of €8 million.

The Eindhoven side were in the market for a new attacking midfielder due to the expected departure of Ola Toivonen this summer and identified Maher as the ideal candidate to replace him.

"It had been our wish to lure him to PSV for quite some time. I am very pleased with his arrival, because we really wanted him," sporting director Marcel Brands commented on the transfer.

"We have signed yet another talented Dutchman, which suits our philosophy."

Maher came through the ranks of the AZ youth academy and has developed into a key player at the Alkmaar side in the past two seasons.

He had also caught the attention of clubs such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Ajax, but will continue his career at PSV instead.

Maher becomes PSV's third signing of the summer transfer window after the previous arrival of Jeffrey Bruma and Florian Jozefzoon.

    Dynamo Kiev confirm Belhanda signing

    292391_heroa.jpg

The Morocco international has completed his move to the Ukraine and has been handed the No.90 shirt Dynamo Kiev have announced the signing of Montpellier midfielder Younes Belhanda.

The 23-year-old was the subject of transfer speculation for much of last season, with rumours linking him with a move to Premier League sides Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham, but it is the Ukrainian giants who have won the battle for his signature.

The Morocco international - who will wear the No.90 shirt - previously stated he would only leave the Ligue 1 club to play Champions League football, but his decision to join a club outside of one of Europe's strongest leagues will be sure to raise eyebrows across the continent.

Belhanda rose to prominence during the 2011/12 campaign, scoring 12 times in 30 appearances, as Montpellier stunned the rest of France by winning the domestic title for the first time in their history.

He repeated that goal haul last term, despite MHSC failing to retain or even challenge for the Ligue 1 crown in a disappointing season for the club.

His contract with Montpellier was due to expire in June 2014, with his transfer fee believed to be in the region of €10 million.

    Cavani proud of Uruguay efforts

    292367_heroa.jpg

The Napoli forward insisted that Uruguay left the tournament with their reputation intact, and believes the experience will serve them well ahead of the World Cup
Edinson Cavani spoke of his pride at Uruguay's Confederations Cup campaign following their defeat in the third place play-off against Italy on Sunday.

The Napoli forward struck twice - his second from a sumptuous free-kick which beat Gianluigi Buffon before netting in the shootout as Uruguay eventualy were defeated 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra-time.

And despite the South American champions' fourth place finish in the tournament, Cavani was adamant that the country comes away from the tournament with their reputation intact.

"Well, I'm content for having scored goals today, but the nicest thing is that Uruguay leaves the Cup with a very good image, and walking tall," the 26-year-old told reporters after the game.

"I don't want to speak about luck, but they did enough to win the game. This makes a difference in a moment like this. But we did well, we played with honour, fought hard and now we leave with reasons to believe in this team.

"We did a beautiful job, with wins and good results like this one. We're showing again the same Uruguay that did well at Copa America and the World Cup qualifiers. And that's all that matters so close to the World Cup."

Captain Diego Lugano echoed his team-mate's sentiments, and lamented his side's narrow failure against more esteemed opponents.

"That's the image that's left behind, a fine tournament with the best squads in the world. Unfortunately, we played some really strong opponents, and we missed the top by very little," the 32-year-old said.

"We did well. This Uruguay that played the Confederations Cup, and the one that won Copa America, it's the true Uruguay."

Rooney must not leave Manchester United, insists Gary Neville

    281212_heroa.jpg

The former Red Devils captain believes his former team-mate should remain at Old Trafford next season despite recently handing in a second transfer request in under three years Gary Neville has advised Wayne Rooney against a move away Manchester United, insisting there is no bigger achievement than playing for the Premier League winners.

The striker, who played with Neville for seven years at United and four years with England, handed in a second transfer request in under three years in May - with then-manager Sir Alex Ferguson immediately ruling out an exit.

Rooney has held secret talks with two mystery clubs over a possible summer switch, but Neville has questioned why any player would actively seek an Old Trafford departure.

"I played with Wayne Rooney for many, many years,” Neville told talkSPORT. "He’s a fantastic football player. I’ve seen David Beckham, and other big players, leave Manchester United and it really is something that comes down to the individual and the club.

"I’ve seen Ryan Giggs at 27 years old get linked to Inter, Juventus and AC Milan and stay. I’ve seen David Beckham get linked to Barcelona and Real Madrid and leave. I’ve seen both ways succeed.

"Personally, with my allegiances, I would never recommend anyone leave Manchester United because I believe it to be a great stage to play football and you can achieve what you want there."

Moving on to speculation of possible new arrivals at Old Trafford, United have reportedly had a €14 million bid rejected by Everton for left-back Leighton Baines.

Neville was reluctant to comment on the speculation, but acknowledged the talents of the England international.

"I’ve seen a lot of the speculation over the last few days about Leighton," he said. "He had a fantastic season last year and was brilliant for Everton.

"He’s been a great performer for the last few years and it’s inevitable that he will be linked with the top clubs in the Premier League."

Moyes 'perfect' for Manchester United, says George Graham

    278774_heroa.jpg

The former Gunners boss is backing Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement this summer to do a "brilliant job" at Old Trafford David Moyes is the "perfect choice" to take over from the departing Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, according to former Arsenal manager George Graham.

Graham, who played for United from 1972-74, believes that the two coaches have very similar qualities which will make the transition at Old Trafford easier for the club.

Moyes failed to win a single piece of silverware during his 11-year tenure at Goodison Park, prompting some to question his ability to step into his compatriot's shoes, but the ex-Gunners boss believes he will do well.

"It is the natural progression in his career," Graham told The Daily Mirror. "He has served his time as an apprentice at Preston and then at Everton - where he did a brilliant job.

"I believe he is the perfect choice to take over. United could have turned to a foreign manager, but I am glad they stayed British.

"There are a lot of similarities between Moyes and Sir Alex. Moyes has the same hunger and ambition - and he has that drive that is so common from people from the west of Scotland."

Moyes has been in management for 15 years, starting his career at Preston in 1998, before taking over from Everton in 2002 and Graham believes his track record of longevity at clubs proves he will succeed in his new role.

"He has drive to be successful," continued Graham.

"He is also a realist and knows there will be inevitable comparisons between him and Sir Alex, especially if United lose a few games. But he will ready for that. He will be prepared - and it will not concern him about handling big names.

"There were star players at Everton when he first arrived. It won’t be a problem for him. He will relish the challenge and it would be no surprise to me if he won the title next season."

    Fabregas: No Barcelona revolution needed

    285021_heroa.jpg

The midfielder has called for minor changes in the summer and pointed at the Bavarians' recent success and Pep Guardiola's treble-winning team as proof this method works Cesc Fabregas has insisted that Barcelona do not need to be revolutionised on the back of a season which saw them defeated 7-0 by Bayern Munich over two legs in the Champions League.

Critics suggested that the Blaugrana needed new players to invigorate the club, with the €57 million signing of Neymar potentially proof that Camp Nou chiefs were listening.

However, the former Arsenal skipper thinks that the club's Bavarian conquerors are evidence that evolution as opposed to upheaval is the way forward for the Catalans this summer.

"In sport and in life, making rash decisions is the worst thing you can do," Fabregas, 26, told Sport. "After our Bayern elimination, comments were directed at us to change everything.

"This always happens, especially in large clubs. You have to decide more quietly and then assess what you can improve and what you cannot.

"For example, the obvious case are Bayern. The lost two Champions League finals and then won in their attempt third [over four years] with almost the same players. Sometimes change is not so necessary.

"The Barca team that won the treble with Pep Guardiola was not winning anything two years earlier and everybody wanted to change everything. Then they made history with almost the same team by adding Gerard Pique and Dani Alves.

"Already on board were Samuel Eto'o, Thierry Henry, Yaya Toure, Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Carles Puyol... So we should go easy."

Tevez: Ronaldo doesn't make me dream like Rooney & Messi

    291720_heroa.jpg

The Argentine has confessed that he is not a massive fan of the Real Madrid ace, while also claiming his infamous touchline row with Roberto Mancini was not his fault Carlos Tevez has revealed there would be no room for Cristiano Ronaldo in his fantasy forward line, claiming Wayne Rooney and Lionel Messi are both superior players to the Portuguese.

The Argentine, who has just swapped Manchester City for Juventus, insists his former Manchester United colleague lacks the ability to take the breath away.

Indeed, when asked in an interview with Tuttosport what his dream attacking triumvirate would be, Tevez replied: "My ideal trident would be me with Rooney and Messi. They are the players who make me dream - not Ronaldo."

Meanwhile, Tevez was at pains to reassure Juventus fans he is no longer a troublemaker, and insisted his infamous touchline bust-up with former boss Roberto Mancini during a Champions League game at Bayern Munich was not his fault.

"On television, it seemed worse than it was," the attacker explained. "When the coach decided to remove [Edin] Dzeko and put on a defender I went back to the bench disappointed.

"But the one who was really angry was Dzeko, who started to insult Mancini in Bosnian, with Mancini answering him in Italian - it was a surreal scene.

"I was fine talking with [Pablo] Zabaleta but when Mancini turned, he saw me sitting down and was furious, but only because he was furious after the row with Dzeko.

"At the beginning of my career in England, I was a hothead. If the coach replaced me, I cursed and insulted him. Now I'm not like this; I have learned how to behave."

The 29-year-old Tevez will wear the No.10 jersey for the Bianconeri next season.

Arsenal target Williams' €12m price tag is 'completely justified', says Swansea defender Davies

    282854_heroa.jpg

The Swans' left-back insists his defensive partner should not leave the club for less than eight figures following a sterling campaign at the heart of a team that won silverware Swansea left-back Ben Davies insists the mooted €12 million asking price for star defender Ashley Williams is "completely justified".

As Goal exclusively revealed in May, Arsenal have agreed terms with Williams but are still in discussions with the Welsh club over a transfer fee.

But Davies believes Williams excelled last season as the Swans won the Capital One Cup and should not sell the 28-year-old for less than €12m.

"Last season I would say Ash was one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League, I cannot think of many who were better than him. The job he did was incredible," he told reporters.

"A price of £10million or more to sign him is completely justified.

"You see some of the money that gets spent in this league on players who are unproven in the Premier League. I think £10million is more than a fair price."

Davies also believes losing his Wales international team-mate would be a huge blow to Michael Laudrup's side.

He added: "You could see last season how good he was for us and he would be a massive loss.

"At the moment he is still a Swansea player and hopefully that will stay the same, but if he does leave for another club we will have to adapt quickly.

"We have Jordi Amat coming in as a new signing and hopefully he can be as good as, if not better than, him if it comes down to it."

Davies, 20, also paid tribute to the guidance Williams provided him in his first full professional campaign - a season that saw him make the left-back spot his own following injury to Neil Taylor.

"Ash gave me a lot of confidence on the pitch and the transition from Swansea to playing for Wales was made a lot easier as I played with him every week," he continued.

"He is a great player and a great captain, he is always there to talk to, and if you have to say something he is happy to take it."

Navas can be Manchester City's Bale - Iniesta

    287919_heroa.jpg

The Barcelona star believes Tottenham's flying Welshman is the only player in England who can be compared to his Spain team-mate, and insists he will make a big impact Jesus Navas can become Manchester City's Gareth Bale, according to Spain team-mate Andres Iniesta.

Navas completed a €17.4 million move to the Etihad Stadium earlier this summer to become City's first signing since the sacking of Roberto Mancini.

And Iniesta, who is training with the 27-year-old every day while the World Cup holders are in Brazil for the Confederations Cup, believes he shares many qualities with Tottenham star Bale.

“Navas is a very special player,” Iniesta told reporters. “He is going to cause the defences in the Premier League a real problem when he plays for City.

“Jesus has so much speed, and his feet are so quick, that it becomes nearly impossible to stop him without fouling him.

“The only player that I can compare him with that is already playing in England is Gareth Bale.”

    Llorente set for Juventus medical

    287121_heroa.jpg

The Spain international is joining the Bianconeri on a free transfer from Athletic Bilbao and will form a new-look attack alongside Carlos Tevez Juventus have announced Fernando Llorente will undergo a medical in Turin on Monday before being officially presented to the press 24 hours later.

The Bianconeri revealed in January the Spain international had agreed to join the Scudetto holders on a free transfer from La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao this summer.

With his contract with the Basque side set to expire on June 30, Llorente is now ready to be formally unveiled as a Juventus player, the club's second star signing in a week, following the acquisition of Carlos Tevez from Manchester City.

"The 28-year-old is scheduled to touch down at Turin’s Caselle airport on Monday lunchtime before completing the required medical checks," a statement on the Italian champions' website read.

"The press conference, to be held on Tuesday July 2 at Juventus Stadium, will get under way at 16:00CET."

Llorente scored four goals in the Primera Division last season, after falling out of favour with former Athletic boss Marcelo Bielsa.

Shevchenko: Ronaldo must remain at Real Madrid

    288416_heroa.jpg

The former Ukraine international feels the 28-year-old would be making a huge mistake if he decided to leave the Spanish capital, particularly with Carlo Ancelotti now in charge Andriy Shevchenko has advised Cristiano Ronaldo to remain at Real Madrid, arguing that playing for the Blancos is the pinnacle of any professional player's career.

It has been reported the Portugal international is considering a return to Manchester United, but Shevchenko believes the 28-year-old attacker would be foolish to quit Madrid.

"I do not know why Cristiano would want to go," the former AC Milan striker told AS. "When you're in Madrid, you must stay in Madrid.

"We would all like to have played there. I do not think you can go much further in your career."

Shevchenko says Ronaldo would be better to remain at the Bernabeu in order to have the opportunity to work with Madrid's new boss, Carlo Ancelotti, whom the former Ukraine forward played under during his time at San Siro.

"I'm sure Ancelotti will be a friend to all, not just Cristiano Ronaldo, and open doors for everyone in that dressing room," he added.

"He will shake up Real, but in a good way, like a breath of fresh air. I am sure he will want to convince Cristiano to stay and be the best.

"I do not think there are too many teams as suitable for Carlo's type and style of play as Real Madrid. It's good for both parties. They are made for each other."

Ancelotti has arrived at Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain, whom he last season led to a first Ligue 1 success since 1994.

Tottenham boss Villas-Boas plans to retire within 10 years
    281756_heroa.jpg

The 35-year-old Spurs manager insists he holds other ambitions in life, including racing in the Dakar Rally, and only anticipates remaining in football for another decade Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed plans to retire from football by the time he turns 45.

The 35-year-old Portuguese became the youngest manager to win a European trophy when he claimed the Europa League with Porto two years ago, before spending a turbulent spell at Chelsea and finding his feet in the Premier League at Spurs.

And although Villas-Boas insists he enjoys the intensity of his job, he does not see coaching as a long-term pursuit.

He told O Jogo: “My passion for football makes me live it very intensively over 11 months and dedicate myself to that, but I think life allows you to enjoy other things.

“For me, there is a limit and, in the next five to 10 years, I will quit coaching.

“To compete in the Dakar Rally is a lifetime ambition for me and is something I know I have to do.

“It went from a passion to an obligation, a destination of life, but I can only do it when I leave football. I will do it.”

In the meantime, Villas-Boas is focused on his role at White Hart Lane where he guided Spurs to a fifth-place finish and record points haul of 72, while the club are linked to the likes of David Villa and Paulinho as the pursuit of Champions League football continues.

Discussing the legacy he'd like to leave, Villas-Boas added: “I just want to be proud of my career.

“I try to play good football with the teams I join and this is the recognition that fulfils me.

“I do not know where my career will take me. What I do know is that it will not last too long.”

Mourinho needs backing to rebuild Chelsea, says Hoddle

The former England manager says he expects the 50-year-old to bring in more signings this summer and strengthen the Blues, but warns the new manager he faces a challenge Glen Hoddle insists Jose Mourinho needs backing if he is to successfully rebuild Chelsea following his return from Real Madrid.

The Blues have already signed Andre Schurrle this summer but, speaking to Goal, the former England manager says he expects more arrivals as the Portuguese strengthens his squad.

"I think he’s coming in at a time where that rebuild is continuing. If they’ve got money like that, Manchester City and Chelsea, they can rebuild every season. Whether that’s healthy is another thing that will only be shown in the results," he said.

"It wasn’t healthy enough for Manchester City was it? They didn’t buy that great in the summer. They won the league but they didn’t win the battle for the transfer market, so you would think that Chelsea would really look to strengthen the squad and give Mourinho the opportunity to rebuild the team."

Hoddle also believes Mourinho may have to change his approach slightly, due to the nature of the players he currently has at his disposal at Stamford Bridge.

"I’m intrigued whether he’ll make those changes in his philosophy. He’s got a system of players there that play with freedom in Oscar, Mata and Hazard. They’ve had immense flexibility and I’ve loved the way Chelsea have played at times, with one striker – whoever that might be – ahead of them," he added.

"That’s going to be a challenge for him, because it’s not really a system he would like to play. He plays a little more restricted than that. Their full backs always push high up the pitch, whereas he usually has them deeper.

"So is Mourinho going to change to the Chelsea way that they’re playing now or is he going to change Chelsea back into how he wants it done? That’s the intriguing thing for me this year, and I’ll be very interested to see which one he does.

"If he does one or the other the same scenario’s going to be there for him, win silverware. But he’ll do whatever he thinks is right to win football matches, I’m pretty sure of that."

This Summer's Top 10 Transfer Targets

This Summer's Top 10 Transfer Targets

    1. Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid, £80 million

    cristiano-ronaldo-574-new-look-and-fashion-haircut-style-in-real-madrid-2012-2013.jpg

The situation:- As rare as it is for one of the world’s greatest players to come on the market, a Ronaldo transfer would be all the more distinct for the extreme chain reaction it would trigger in the rest of the window. His departure from Real Madrid could condition the future of everyone else on this list and so many more beyond. The current situation was itself effectively set in motion by Ronaldo’s public declaration that he was “sad” back in September, before the player’s representatives reached out to Manchester United, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain in early 2013. For their part, Real Madrid have been very vocal about keeping the 28-year-old, and feel it would not fit the club’s status to lose both Jose Mourinho and Ronaldo in the same summer. The player, however, is understood to be dissatisfied with the club’s general approach to him, and only sparked further intrigue with a tweet simply saying, “All the news about my renewal with Real Madrid are false." It is a situation that remains very much open.

The suitors:- Ronaldo’s previous club Manchester United have been working the hardest to make something happen since January, and detailed two employees to operate exclusively on any deal. The promise of funding from both Nike and Chevrolet has been secured, while a number of high-profile club figures -- from David Gill to Alex Ferguson -- have been involved at various points. It has been widely reported that the principles of a deal to return to Old Trafford were agreed, only for Ronaldo to reconsider when Ferguson retired. Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain both have the money to immediately act on any uncertainty, but it is also believed that the player would feel an element of regret at not winning the Champions League with Real Madrid. One other mooted scenario is that he stays for two more attempts before moving when his contract expires in 2015.

The likeliest outcome:- As it stands, the situation is so delicate that it’s going to take something dramatic to force it along -- either Real accepting an actual offer or the player actively pushing for a move. One Manchester United source said the transfer is “entirely possible but still hugely difficult." For the moment, it seems a slightly unsettled Ronaldo will see out his contract.

    2. Gareth Bale, Tottenham Hotspur, £75 million

    Gareth-Bale-of-Spurs-008.jpg

The situation:- Real Madrid have been very loud about their interest in Bale; the player’s agent has been public about the fact that he has not yet signed a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur. Indeed, representative Jonathan Barnett actually speaking on the record to Marca in late May about his client’s future was curious in the extreme. Although Bale himself is known to currently be happy with his life in London and enjoys a warm relationship with Andre Villas-Boas, it is his ultimate ambition to play for Real Madrid. The 23-year-old’s camp has also been increasingly impressing on him the importance of getting back into the Champions League as soon as possible.

The suitors:- While Manchester United and another elite Premier League club are known to have had very tentative enquiries turned down, Bale himself only has designs on Real. The feeling is very much mutual. In Spanish football circles, it is being spoken of in a very matter-of-fact manner that the transfer will definitely happen before next season.

The likeliest outcome:- At the very least, a long drawn-out affair, as has become typical with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy. Despite Real’s obvious interest, any actual move from them may still be dependent on the Ronaldo situation. Bale will likely end up at the Bernabeu eventually, but unless something radical happens, it may not be this summer.

    3. Edinson Cavani, Napoli, £54 million

    Napolis-forward-Edinson-C-008.jpg

The situation:- Cavani feels he needs a transfer now to move to the next level of his career; a number of top European clubs feel he is exactly the player to move their game along. Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, however, has been quite strident about the fact that Cavani simply will not go unless his huge release clause is met. De Laurentiis has also played the media game quite cleverly, placing a fair amount of pressure on the forward, to the point Cavani has requested clear-the-air talks on returning from the Confederations Cup.

The suitors:- In a summer in which buyable top-level forwards have been at something of a premium, Cavani’s situation means he is arguably being actively sought by more clubs than anyone else here. Leading the chase at the moment are Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester City.

The likeliest outcome:-Either Real Madrid or the English duo activating his release clause, although Cavani’s first choice is understood to be the Spanish club.

    4. Luis Suarez, Liverpool, £31.5 million

    Luis-Su-rez-008.jpg

The situation:- Suarez very much wants a move, as he has made abundantly clear. The tone of his exit strategy has also evolved over the past few weeks, going from talk of the English media forcing him out to now speaking about how “every player aspires” to be the best and play for clubs like “Real Madrid or Barcelona.” Liverpool maintain he is not for sale, but in order to maintain a strong hand in negotiations, it is something they simply must do.

The suitors:- Here’s where it gets tricky. Suarez’s specific talents would actually suit a few elite English clubs, not least Arsenal and especially Manchester City. His initial comments have made such transfers difficult, however, and it would be politically difficult for Liverpool to sell to another Premier League side. Although Real Madrid are clearly interested, meanwhile, they have a number of players above him on their list of targets. He may have to be patient.

The likeliest outcome:- Jamie Carragher has said he thinks “Luis will stay” and that could well be the case if the English clubs fail to act and Real land both Bale and Cavani. If Real do not, a move for Suarez may well happen.

    5. Robert Lewandowski, Borussia Dortmund, £25 million

    Robert-Lewandowski-010.jpg

The situation:- An impasse. Lewandowski has agreed to a deal with Bayern Munich, but Borussia Dortmund have been obdurate in their utter refusal to sell to the German champions after the controversial capture of Mario Goetze. In order to prevent the Pole from leaving for free next year, Dortmund are actively trying to sell him to a foreign club. Although Lewandowski’s first choice is by far Bayern, he is understood to be open to the idea of another move and his representatives have made contact with a number of clubs.

The suitors:- Beyond Bayern, all of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and especially Manchester United have expressed an interest. The Old Trafford club appear to have made the most significant progress with Lewandowski representatives so far, but City may now be moved into action after the sale of Carlos Tevez and missing out on Isco to Real Madrid.

The likeliest outcome:-This is another transfer that could be highly dependent on Ronaldo’s future, in terms of how both Real and United act, while City’s next move will be extremely interesting. It is also not beyond Lewandowski to counter Dortmund and dig his own heels in to move to Bayern for free next summer.

    6. Wayne Rooney, Manchester United, £30 million

    Wayne-Rooney-008.jpg

The situation:- It will become a lot clearer after this week’s showdown between club and player. While the situation has calmed after the retirement of Ferguson, who had made up his mind on selling Rooney, it is understood the 27-year-old himself may now see the benefit of a fresh start. Neither club nor player has yet wanted it desperately enough to make something happen, but that could change either way after this week’s meeting.

The suitors:- Jose Mourinho is a known admirer at Chelsea, while Arsenal have been reported as investigating the possibility of funding a deal. Real Madrid turned down an offer to buy the player last season, but it is believed their interest may have been piqued again. Paris Saint-Germain would gladly buy, but Rooney would only move to France as a last resort.

The likeliest outcome:-Despite Rooney’s fundamental talent, the scenario is greatly complicated by his age, form, price and contract demands. So far, other clubs have been reluctant to rise to that level. The dynamics could radically shift this week.

    7. Thiago Alcantara, Barcelona, £15 million

    1357859002326.jpg

The situation:- Manchester United have agreed to terms with the precocious midfielder and are prepared to quadruple his wages, but with Barcelona desperate to get him to stay and doing all they can to stall his exit, he is still considering his status. Old Trafford sources have said the club are getting increasingly frustrated with the progress of the deal, but that they also realise patience is essential. It has been suggested that part of Barca’s negotiation strategy has been frustrating United to the point they are eventually forced to look at other options.

The suitors:- While Chelsea hover and Bayern eye from a distance after Thiago’s sparkling displays at the Under-21 European Championships, it currently seems a straight battle of persuasion between United and Barcelona.

The likeliest outcome:- The Old Trafford club feel they have “done all they can” to persuade Thiago, but although confident of ultimately signing him, United anticipate a very nervy wait. Thiago being swayed by Barca again is not seen as out of the question at all.

    8. Christian Benteke, Aston Villa, £25 million

    benteke_1669619a.jpg

The situation:- After Benteke’s sensational displays effectively kept Villa up last season, owner Randy Lerner has set his price at £25 million to ward off a very long list of suitors. While the player’s own desire is unclear, Paul Lambert has been working hard to persuade him that he should stay at Villa Park for at least one more campaign to properly finish his development and also earn a starting place in Belgium’s 2014 World Cup squad.

The suitors:-All of Tottenham, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid.

The likeliest outcome:- While Villa’s new Danish recruit, Nicklas Helenius, would appear a potential replacement for Benteke, the 22-year-old does greatly respect Lambert. Another year at Villa is probable.

    9. David Villa, Barcelona, £12 million

    David-Villa-Chelsea.jpg

The situation:- A late 2011 injury robbed Villa of the sleekness that made him the world’s finest forward between 2008 and 2010, as well as the ability to consistently play at Barca’s required level. As such, a move away to a team slightly below the Catalans’ level is imminent, particularly given how Neymar’s signing has further marginalised Villa at Camp Nou. One potential obstruction could be his price of £12 million with just a year left on his contract.

The suitors:- Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Arsenal.

The likeliest outcome:-Spurs and Barcelona eventually strike a deal.

    10. Stevan Jovetic, Fiorentina, £26.5 million

    Stevan-Jovetic.png

The situation:-After five years in Florence, Jovetic is now desperate to move and further his career. “I have nothing left to give here,” the 23-year-old playmaker said recently. “Juve have been after me for a year, and they say they want me and that I'm a top target. Who wouldn't be flattered by that? I want to move there so I can grow.” He is also open to the Premier League.

The suitors:- Despite Jovetic’s surprisingly strident public comments, Juve’s evident interest could be complicated by the purchases of Fernando Llorente and now Carlos Tevez. At the same time, the Turin club have been reported as testing Fiorentina’s resolve in order to drive the price down. Arsenal are also extremely keen on the forward, who could complement impending arrival Gonzalo Higuain.

The likeliest outcome:- Juventus eventually get their playmaker for a lower price.

    Thiago keen on United clause

    1357859002326.jpg

Manchester United target Thiago Alcantara will demand a low-priced buy-out clause allowing him to leave Old Trafford at the end of his first season should he not play a certain amount of games, according to Sport.

The Spanish daily claim that the Spain Under-21 captain became frustrated at the lack of playing time he was afforded by Barca last season as they won the Liga title in style. And after witnessing close friend Giovani Dos Santos’s unhappy stint with Tottenham, where he only made ten Premier League appearances over four seasons, he is keen not to suffer a repeat. If the 22-year-old agrees a move to the Premier League, as is widely expected, the clause will allow him to assess his options if he is unable to break into David Moyes’ starting line-up.

With the United midfield losing a key creative figure following the second retirement of Paul Scholes, Thiago is exactly the profile of player that Moyes is looking for. And, with time not on their side, the Premier Leaguechampions may feel that accepting such a deal would be a risk worth taking.Thiago’s buy-out clause currently stands at £15 million. However, next month that price tag will leap to an exorbitant €90 million.
