    Norwich sign Fer from Twente

    287469_heroa.jpg

The Dutchman, who was close to joining Everton in January, has signed a four-year deal to become Chris Hughton's sixth summer signing Norwich have announced the signing of Twente midfielder Leroy Fer on a four-year deal, subject to international clearance.

The 23-year-old becomes the latest arrival in a busy few weeks at Carrow Road, joining fellow new recruits Javier Garrido, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Nathan Redmond, Carlo Nash and Martin Olsson.

Fer was close to joining Everton in January before the move was scuppered and Norwich manager Chris Hughton has spoken of his delight at capturing the midfielder.

"We are really pleased to have acquired the signature of a player with the qualities that Leroy has," Chris Hughton told the club's official website.

"He's a very versatile Dutch international and at 23 he has that pleasing balance of having acquired experience playing over 100 games in the Dutch League - but still having plenty of time ahead of him to continue his development as a player here with us at Norwich City."

Fer has played for the Netherlands on two occasions and featured in every game for the Under-21s in this year's European Championship, which ended in a semi-final defeat to Italy.

    Zanetti sees greatness in Icardi

    276336_heroa.jpg

The club captain dismissed any notion of becoming the Nerazzurri coach once he hangs up his boots and is focused on recovering from his Achilles injury

Javier Zanetti has predicted that new Inter attacker Mauro Icardi will achieve great things at San Siro. The 20-year-old completed his switch on July 10 and will link up with the likes of Fredy Guarin and Alvaro Pereira in the Nerazzurri squad in pre-season, and the club captain has laid down the gauntlet for his new team-mate.

"Now he’s ours. I see a great future for him, he’s a No.9 in the penalty area with a talent for scoring goals," Zanetti told TyCSports. "He is also from Argentina, we must take advantage of his potential."

Zanetti suffered a serious Achilles injury during the Nerazzurri's 1-0 defeat to Palermo in April, but he is adamant that his playing career is not complete and revealed his lack of interest in stepping into the Giuseppe Meazza hotseat any time soon."I have never been tempted to be a coach, I’d rather have a role as a director, in which I’m always with the team. I hope to do my job, just as I did on the pitch," the Argentine added.

"I had decided even before my injury that I would play one more season. It’s a serious injury, now I hope to recover as good as possible and to return quickly to playing football, that’s what I like the most. Already at the end of the month, I will join my Inter in New York."

The veteran defender also spoke out on which are the best two coaches he has worked under during his long career, with Marcelo Bielsa and Jose Mourinho being namechecked by the Inter skipper.

"Bielsa and Mourinho are two masters," Zanetti added. "They are beyond average. They are two winners, very careful with the details. They have clear ideas and I think they are similar."

Zanetti signed a one-year contract extension in June, meaning he will have spent 19 years at San Siro by the end of that deal, having made his Inter debut back in 1995.

Andrea Stramaccioni led Inter to a desperately disappointing ninth-placed finish last season, which saw him dismissed at the end of the campaign and replaced by former Napoli boss Walter Mazzarri.

    Gameiro eyes Sevilla switch

    271985_heroa.jpg

The striker has admitted that La Liga would appeal to him as speculation over his future continues Kevin Gameiro has set his sights on a move to Sevilla after falling out of favour at Paris Saint-Germain.

Gameiro, who joined PSG from Lorient in 2011, has fallen down the pecking order at Parc des Princes following the arrival of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

Sevilla are reported to be interested in acquiring the 26-year-old - who could cost up to €10 million - and the France international revealed that he is considering a move abroad as he looks to further his international prospects ahead of the 2014 World Cup."There is talk about Sevilla. I have to decide whether it would be better for my career to go somewhere else and not be satisfied with my substitute position in Paris," he told L'Equipe.

"I want to play football and score goals. In one year there will be a World Cup and that is a target for me."Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, Valencia and Fenerbahce are all rumoured to have enquired about Gameiro's availability, but he was quick to stress that Spain is his number one choice.

"I have opportunities almost everywhere, but I do have a preference for La Liga."
Gameiro - whose current deal expires in 2015 - made 29 appearances for PSG last term, scoring nine goals.

Bruma, Schaars & Arias join PSV

    281204_heroa.jpg

The Eredivisie club have bolstered their ranks following the summer departures of Dries Mertens, Jeremain Lens and Erik Pieters PSV have completed the signings of Jeffrey Bruma, Stijn Schaars and Santiago Arias.

Bruma, 21, joins on a four-year deal from Chelsea, while Schaars, 29, and Arias, 21, have signed three and four-year-deals respectively after arriving from Sporting Lisbon. The trio continue the Eindhoven club's rebuilding process following the signing of AZ midfielder Adam Maher on the back of losing Dries Mertens, Jeremain Lens and Erik Pieters earlier this summer.

Bruma, who is thought to have cost in the region of €3 million, has impressed in his last two seasons spent on loan at Bundesliga outfit Hamburg, and PSV will be hoping he can further his growing reputation in Eindhoven.

"[Bruma is] a defender that we would have wanted sooner," PSV technical director Marcel Brands told the club's official website."Unfortunately, it took a little longer than we had hoped for, but we are pleased that he is here."

Schaars, who played for Vitesse and AZ earlier in his career, returns to the Netherlands after a two-year spell in Portugal as part of a double €1.6 million deal with Colombia right-back Arias.

"It was a difficult operation with Sporting, but we can add a chunk of experience in the team with him," Brands added about the midfielder."From the first day we approached Stijn, he could not wait to start."

    Ribery: I deserve Ballon d'Or

    295441_heroa.jpg

The winger says he couldn't do anything more to win the prize with his efforts last season and expects to be crowned the world's best player

Franck Ribery claims he deserves to win the Ballon d'Or for his role in Bayern Munich's treble-winning campaign last season. The France winger, along with team-mates Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Mario Mandzukic, was nominated for the Uefa Best Player in Europe prize this week.

However, the 30-year-old has targeted winning the Ballon d'Or and believes he will never have a better chance of being crowned the world's best player."I think I’ve done everything to be the world’s best player,” he told the Bundesliga's official website.

"I’ve played a very, very good season. It’s either now or never for winning this prize. I can’t play any better than this."Ribery then revealed he is enjoying life under new Bayern coach Pep Guardiola and says his current situation is a world away from his struggles under Louis van Gaal.

The former Marseille man had a poor relationship with the Dutchman while he was in charge at the Allianz Arena between 2009 and 2011, with Ribery even coming close to leaving the club.

However, he remained at Bayern and went on to become an important member of Jupp Heynckes' treble-winning squad last season and says first impressions have been good with his latest mentor. He added: "Things didn’t really feel right on a human level with Van Gaal, but it was positive from day one with Guardiola.

"You can feel a mutual respect and recognition."Ribery is contracted to the Bavarian giants until 2017 and admitted he would like to stay until the end of his playing days.

"Both me and the club want me to end my career here. I hope to win lots more trophies yet. If I reach the end of my current contract, then I will have been at Bayern for a decade and that would be really cool."

Wenger: Lack of stability at Premier League title rivals can aid Arsenal

    281821_heroa.jpg

With the Gunners boss being the only manager remaining from last season's top-four finishers, he feels his squad can take advantage of uncertainty to end their trophy drought Arsene Wenger hopes Arsenal's stability can help them break an eight-year trophy drought this season.

With Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all entering the 2013-14 season under new management, the Frenchman is the only boss from last term's top-four clubs to retain his position for the coming campaign.

And Wenger, speaking from Indonesia where Arsenal are about to begin a pre-season tour of Asia, believes that could give his team a head start on their rivals this season.

"Nobody knows what effect the changes will have but we hope to take advantage of our greater stability," Wenger told reporters.

"What has been frustrating for me is that in recent years we couldn't give our fans what they expected of us.

"But now we are in a position where we want to compete for the title again. Our challenge is to close the gap on Manchester United, City and Chelsea."

Wenger recently revealed his desire to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium beyond the end of next season, with his contract set to expire in 12 months' time, and positive talks regarding an extension have taken place with Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis.

Altidore one of the best in Europe, claims Di Canio

    218064_heroa.jpg

The Black Cat boss is thrilled with the competition for places up front after signing the USA international Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio claims new signing Jozy Altidore is one of the "best strikers in Europe" following his €7 million arrival from AZ.The USA international moved to the Stadium of Light from the Eredivisie side on Tuesday, putting pen to paper on a four-year deal.

Altidore spent two successful seasons with AZ, scoring 50 goals in 93 games including one in the KNVB Cup final win over PSV in May and he bolsters a forward line at the Premier League club that also features Danny Graham and Steven Fletcher.

Di Canio was quick to express his delight at clinching the 23-year-old's signature, and is thrilled with the firepower he now has at his disposal."I’m really pleased because a new arrival can benefit the squad and also individuals because there is competition up front," the Italian told the club's official website.

"Altidore is one of the top strikers in Europe. He only joined us on Tuesday but I’m very happy, curious and excited because I have a very good attacking side at the moment."

The 23-year-old's previous spell in England was an unsuccessful one as he was relegated at the end of a season-long loan deal with Hull City back in 2010.

    Zidane: Coaching is tough

    291479_heroa.jpg

The Real Madrid and Juventus great says learning the ropes on the other side of the white line is more difficult than he imagined Zinedine Zidane has admitted his glorious playing career offers no guarantee that he will enjoy an equally successful life as a coach.

The 41-year-old won the World Cup, European Championship and Champions League as a player before retiring in 2006 with a reputation as one of the greatest players to have graced the game.

But after opting to take his coaching badges with a view to a career in the dug-out in the future, Real Madrid's sporting director revealed to L'Equipe that he has had to begin his footballing education all over again.

"I am like everybody else. I like it like that, it's the other guys that want me to be special. I do it like everybody else. I know that being a good player doesn't make you a good coach. Even if it can help," he said.

"You have to accept that you don't know much and to accept that if you give yourself the means, you can grow and learn even at my age. I have to be modest, I ignore so many things. I'm glad I did those courses. Sometimes I went to bed with a headache. Coaching is a real job, you have to learn it.

"Tomorrow people will say I'm a good coach if I win. Only if I win. It will take time. I cant be the coach I want to be just like that. Zidane or not Zidane, it will take time. You have to learn form other people, to pass diplomas. There is a process. And it suits me."

The former France international then gave his personal insight into what it takes to get the best out of individual players.

He added: "I learned not to look automatically for confidence. You will of course need confidence to build a staff but also competence.

"Players will listen to me if I give them something. If you want a player to give you his competence, you have to be demanding and even manipulate him a bit. You have to threaten him and also felicitate him. The carrot and the stick. It works in football and in life."

Valbuena: PSG and Monaco are under pressure

    233267_heroa.jpg

The Olympique de Marseille star believes the duo's heavy investment has created a huge amount of expectation, and revealed he is "pumped" to win titles next season
Olympique de Marseille midfielder Mathieu Valbuena believes Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco will be under significant pressure in the 2013-14 campaign.

PSG are favourites to complete the capture of Edinson Cavani from Napoli having invested heavily in their squad last season, while newly promoted Monaco have splashed the cash to land the likes of Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho this summer.

Valbuena, who helped Marseille clinch second spot behind PSG in Ligue 1 last season, feels the huge investment at each club will lead to a huge amount of expectation heading into the new season.

"The pressure will be mainly on their shoulders [PSG and Monaco]," he told La Provence. "Plenty is expected of them in relation to their spending and their recruitment."

Marseille have likewise invested in the market so far this summer, securing the signing of Dimitri Payet from Lille and agreeing a deal for Le Havre youngster Benjamin Mendy, and Valbuena is confident his side can compete for trophies next season.

"I'm still pumped," the 28-year-old added. "This season is super important. I want to be better, to be more decisive, to win titles, because it is magic to achieve things with l'OM."

Liverpool gunning for the top four - Coutinho

    270114_heroa.jpg

The 21-year-old was integral to the Reds' blistering end to last season, and is convinced this form will give the club belief to mount a charge for Champions League football Coutinho insists last season's impressive finish to the Premier League season has left Liverpool feeling confident of mounting a top-four challenge this term.

Brendan Rodgers' men lost just one of their last 16 matches in the league campaign, with the Brazilian No.10 and fellow January signing Daniel Sturridge at the heart of the revival.

And Coutinho is adamant this form means the Merseysiders will head into the new season full of belief in their ability to return Champions League football to Anfield.

"Some new players have arrived to help us and the team finished well last year, so we hope to be able to finish within the top four," he told the club's official website.

"That's what we have always fought for, but we should think on a game-by-game basis because the competition is very long and we have to sustain good performances throughout the whole season."

Coutinho wowed the Anfield faithful with some dazzling trickery and vision last season, and the 21-year-old revealed the secret of his success is his laid back nature on the pitch.

"I always try to be relaxed, always play football and enjoy myself because what I like doing most is to play football, so I'm not concerned with pressure or such things," he added.

"I just try to enjoy myself on the field and always do my best to help the team.

"I'll work as hard as I've always done, always trying to improve each day as much as I can and always trying to learn from the more experienced players and the manager. Always working hard is what is most important."

    Sevilla ready to sell Negredo

    291960_heroa.jpg

Unai Emery believes the sale of his star striker to Manuel Pellegrini's side could be the best option for all parties, as speculation over a move continues to mount
Sevilla coach Unai Emery believes the sale of Alvaro Negredo to Manchester City would be the best result for both clubs. On Thursday Goal reported City are targeting Negredo and Fiorentina striker Stevan Jovetic to boost their attacking options having missed out on Edinson Cavani, who appears set for Paris Saint-Germain

Funds are much-needed at Sevilla and Emery has given the strongest indication yet the 27-year-old could leave the Liga club, who are reportedly trying to push his price beyond €23m."The most likely situation is that he will leave," Emery said.

"The cards are on the table. Negredo is a very important player to Sevilla and he could continue to be one, either by staying here or by earning the club a big transfer fee."We know he could leave, but it would be the best for everyone.

"The club would be able to meet its financial obligations, and although we would lose a key player, we need to be reasonable, like we were in the case of Navas.
"Our aim is to produce new players that can reach the same heights."It's possible the club can't reach an agreement for him, but we are prepared, we have spent some time working on alternatives.

"Of course we're not going to find a player with the same characteristics as him or one who is going to have the same record."But we will find players who will be important to the future of this club, and I trust the work the club is doing in that area."

    :shocked::cool:Aubameyang quicker than Usain Bolt

    201427_heroa.jpg

The Borussia Dortmund attacker was clocked at 3.7 seconds over a 30-metre run - faster than the Jamaican sprinter at the start of his record-breaking 100m in Berlin in 2009 New Borussia Dortmund signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has wasted no time impressing his new employers after he was timed sprinting at a speed faster than Usain Bolt.

The 24-year-old ran 30 metres in 3.7 seconds while at Dortmund's pre-season training camp in Bad Ragaz in Switzerland - almost 0.1 seconds faster than the iconic Olympian in his record-breaking 100m run in Berlin in 2009.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc was left stunned by the former Saint-Etienne striker's achievement, telling Bild: "Pierre is surely one of the fastest players who has ever played here."

Legendary coach Otto Pfister, who has known Aubameyang throughout his career, has warned the Bundesliga to be wary of the Gabon international's threat next season.

"Aubameyang will be fatal to the Bundesliga - but only to his opponents," he added. "I've never seen a player so explosive as he."

Aubameyang, who joined BVB in a reported €13 million deal from Saint-Etienne last week, made his first appearance for Jurgen Klopp's side in a 3-1 win over Basel on Wednesday.

Juventus don't need Jovetic, insists Marotta

    292081_heroa.jpg

The Bianconeri supremo believes the arrival of Carlos Tevez has solved the team's attacking shortcomings and revealed Inter have made an approach for Mauricio Isla Juventus general director Giuseppe Marotta insists the club have given up signing Stevan Jovetic simply because they do not need another attacker.

The Serie A champions have long been linked with a move for the Fiorentina ace, despite Marotta previously claiming a deal would be impossible due to poor relations between the clubs.

Coach Antonio Conte admitted earlier this week that the Montenegro international would be too expensive for the Bianconeri, but Marotta has stressed the acquisition of Carlos Tevez from Manchester City means the 23-year-old is no longer a necessary target.

"We pulled out of the race for Jovetic a while ago," he was quoted as saying by Correire dello Sport. "We are satisfied with the signings we've made to boost our attack.

"Jovetic has become an utopia - it's not because we couldn't sign him, but because we preferred other options. With Tevez, we think we have solved our problems up front."

Juve have also been linked with a move for Bologna attacker Alessandro Diamanti, with the Rossoblu setting a deadline of Monday for any approach for the player to be made, but Marotta claims there was never any real interest.

"We never approached Bologna nor the representatives of the player. No negotiation exists and none will start in the future," he stated.

Finally, Marotta revealed they had received an approach from Inter for Mauricio Isla, but claimed that any potential deal was a long way from being completed.

"We have had a request from Inter, politely received, but there is no financial agreement," the 56-year-old said. "In fact, we are not even past the stage where you talk to the player."

Illarramendi vows to justify €32m fee

    article-2362543-1ACB78E9000005DC-678_634x380.jpg

The Spain Under-21 midfielder is understandably ecstatic after becoming the fifth signing of Carlo Ancelotti's new regime at Santiago Bernabeu Asier Illarramendi has vowed to justify his €32 million transfer fee after being unveiled as a Real Madrid player on Saturday.

The midfielder signed a six-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Friday after Madrid met the sizeable release clause in his contract, with the player joining from Real Sociedad."Today is a very special day for me," he said. "Getting the chance to play here is a very unique opportunity. I will give everything for this crest.

"I would like to show my appreciation to Real Sociedad and their fans for everything they've done for me."

The Spain Under-21 international was delighted to be catching the eye of the Liga giants and revealed that Blancos star Xabi Alonso convinced him to make the move to the capital-based club this summer."I went home to my town after the European Under-21; my agents called me and told me that Real Madrid was interested," Illarramendi added.

"I was flattered because having a club as important as Real Madrid interested in you doesn’t happen every day. I talked to the president, who was kind to me and I appreciate that."I also spoke to Xabi Alonso, who advised me to come because he said it was incredible. He's a great player, he’s always been a leader and I hope to learn a lot playing with him."

The midfielder believes there is team on the planet better than his new club and thanked his new supporters and bosses for the welcome he received on Saturday.
"It’s clear that Real Madrid are the best club in the world; they’ve proved it over the years," the Spaniard told the club's official website. "The president and his entire board of directors made a massive effort so that I can be here today and there’s nothing more I can do than thank them as well as all the fans who gave me such an incredible welcome.Blancos president Florentino Perez also credited Sociedad and said Illarramendi would be well supported by the Madrid faithful.

"We are happy to welcome Asier Illarramendi to Real Madrid," Perez said. "I would like to show my appreciation to Real Sociedad and their president for making this possible."The fans will support you in the good and bad times."

Illarramendi starred for Spain's Under-21 side in their European Championship-winning campaign earlier this summer and has been likened to team-mate Xabi Alonso for his passing-based game.

David Moyes' tenure as Manchester United manager started on a sour note as the Premier League champions fell to a shock friendly defeat to Thailand All-Stars.In a game lacking real flow and multiple missed chances, it was the Thai outfit who looked the more dangerous throughout and a sole 49th-minute strike from the impressive Teeratep Winothai secured the victory.

Moyes opted for a mix of youth and experience in his first selection, teaming the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs with young Belgian Adnan Januzaj.

Perhaps understandably, United started rustily and after four minutes were in debt to a wonderful recovery challenge from Jonny Evans to deny the hosts the lead after United’s offside trap was broken by Winothai.

Indeed, it took 22 minutes for United to carve out their first real opportunity; Fabio’s cross from the right-hand side was inch-perfect for the onrushing Januzaj to prod home but somehow, the youngster tapped it over the bar.

Slowly, the visitors began to take control and on the half-hour mark, Danny Welbeck finally escaped the attentions of his marker to race clear onto a Tom Cleverley through-ball, only for poor ball control to let him down when attempting to round the keeper.

Januzaj was proving to be a prominent player of the first half and, after the Belgian negotiated his way past a defender with a fine piece of skill, his cross-cum-shot flashed wide of the post.

However, United continued to be troubled by the ball over the top and another one on 35 minutes set Winothai clear but his fierce half-volley was tipped round the post by Amos.

The Thai outfit seemed to be relishing the occasion and after going close on two previous occasions, Winothai finally found the net just four minutes after half-time.

Some shoddy defending from United suddenly saw the hosts gifted a three-on-two attack and, after a quick exchange of passes, Winothai beat Ben Amos at his near post with a close-range strike.

United tried to hit back quickly but Welbeck, who looked lively but clumsy throughout, could only find the keeper’s midriff from a tight angle.

The goal certainly did seem to spark Moyes’ men into life and on the hour mark it was Fabio who was next to threaten with a curling effort that was comfortably beaten away by the goalkeeper.

The visitors handed a United debut to Wilfried Zaha as a raft of substitutions began to affect the pattern of the second 45 minutes.

With 10 minutes to play, the former Crystal Palace starlet almost stole the show when, moments after Welbeck had scuffed wide when clean through, the winger unleashed a rasping left-footed effort that curled against the post.

But an equaliser failed to materalise and Moyes was left with an unwelcome start as he begins life at United.
