:rofl:Rooney: Manchester United need Champions League to sign the best players

    1815362_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney admits that Manchester United need to be in the Champions League to buy the best players in the transfer market.

United have embarked on a major spending spree this summer, acquiring the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay, but have missed out on a number of deals also.

Pedro snubbed United to join Chelsea, Nicolas Otamendi moved to Manchester City, while such stars as Neymar and Thomas Muller have been linked with moves to Old Trafford.

And, with United preparing to face Club Brugge in the second leg of their Champions League play-off, Rooney accepts that the club must qualify for the group stages if they are to buy marquee players.

“United are a massive club, but it depends on the player,” he is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.

“When I joined, I said I wanted to join a club playing Champions League football.

“Obviously United still have a big pull in terms of the best players, but they will want to play Champions League football so it is important we qualify.”

United beat their Belgian opponents 3-1 in the first leg at Old Trafford, with Memphis netting a brace and Marouane Fellaini capping a fine victory, and Rooney admits that he missed playing in the competition in 2014-15.

“Obviously the money side is more for the businessmen at the club,” he added.

“For the players, it is about getting out there on the pitch and playing in the big games and trying to bring the big nights back to Old Trafford.

“It is important we finish the job off. I didn’t enjoy being sat at home watching the Champions League last season. It was weird.

“I still watched the games on TV. I had to watch. You have to watch the best teams in Europe because I enjoy football.

“But being back against Brugge was a great feeling. When you walk out and line up with the Champions League music playing, it really gives you a shiver.

“A club this size has to be in the Champions League.

“Last year we were disappointed and the most important thing for us is to make sure we qualify and get those special nights back here.”

PSG bid for Kurzawa was rejected, reveal Monaco
    layvin-kurzawa-monaco-bastia-ligue-1-13032015_72uduxg514151oi8gnes69au7.jpg

Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has confirmed his club have rejected a bid from Paris Saint-Germain for defender Layvin Kurzawa.

According to reports, the French champions offered their Ligue 1 rivals €18 million for the 22-year-old left-back, who still has three years left on his contract at the Stade Louis II.

Vasilyev refused to confirm the size of the bid but did disclose that it had been turned down.

"We have, for now, rejected PSG's offer," he is quoted as saying by L'Equipe.

"It is true that there is still ongoing contact [between the two clubs]. However, it is also true that there are several clubs fixed on Layvin."

It has been claimed that Monaco will be forced to cash in on Kurzawa if they this week fail to overturn their 3-1 deficit from the first leg of their Champions League play-off round tie with Valencia.

However, Vasilyev insists that the principality club are under no financial pressure to sell key players - even if they miss out on Europe's elite club competition.

"I cannot tell you what is going to happen before August 31," he added. "But I have said that, economically, we do not need to make transfers.

"The books are balanced and I have provisioned for not playing in the European Cup in the budget. So, [Kurzawa's future] is not related at all to the result against Valencia.

"I have always said, though, if we receive a great offer and if the player wants to leave, then we will think about it."

Kurzawa came through the youth ranks at Monaco and has already been capped at international level by France.

PSG are looking for a new left-back, with their current first-choice, Maxwell, now 33 and the Brazilian's understudy, Lucas Digne, poised to join Roma.

Real Madrid fans don't boo Bale - Buyo

    1738542_heroa.jpg

Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Paco Buyo insists the club's supporters do not whistle Gareth Bale, they just show their unhappiness with his performances.

Bale enjoyed a fine debut season at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2013-14, scoring vital goals in Copa del Rey and Champions League finals, but came under fire from a section of the club's fans in his second campaign amid reports that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo had deteriorated.

The issue shows no sign of abating, however, and Bale was jeered during a friendly against Galatasaray last Monday.

Buyo, however, says the fans are just letting off steam: “I don’t think the supporters whistle Gareth Bale, sometimes they show their discomfort like they did in the Santiago Bernabeu trophy," he told Omnisport.

"I think Real Madrid supporters want Bale to show his quality and skills as a player. He is going to be important to Real Madrid's success."

Real have had to adapt to a new style following the appointment of Rafael Benitez, with the former Liverpool boss replacing the departed Carlo Ancelotti.

Bale has subsequently been deployed in a more central role, and Buyo believes that the Welshman can play a major role under the Spaniard's management.

“It’s true he is playing in other position he was doing last seasons so he will have to get used to it. Real Madrid are changing their way of playing," he added.

"The preseason was really tough, so it’s normal Gareth Bale is not fit enough right now but I think he will be important with his skills helping the team to reach all the titles”

Bale scored 17 goals and provided 12 assists in all competitions last season.

Hecking denies De Bruyne saga is distracting Wolfsburg

    kevindebruyne-cropped_9mqoc9mhxmwe1c0pf4owlhjn6.jpg

Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking has dismissed the suggestion that the media frenzy created by Kevin De Bruyne's proposed move to Manchester City is responsible for his side's sluggish start to the new Bundesliga season.

City are willing to break their transfer record to sign the Belgium international for £50 million (€69m) but have yet to reach an agreement with the forward's current employers.

Hecking admitted on Thursday that the ongoing speculation is taking its toll on De Bruyne but the coach does not believe that the scrappy 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on the opening day of the 2015-16 campaign and Saturday's 1-1 draw at Koln should be viewed as evidence that the entire Wolfsburg squad are being distracted by the ongoing transfer saga.

"I don't see how that is affecting us," the 50-year-old trainer told reporters. "You cannot blame a bad game only on one player. So I do not see a correlation."

Wolfsburg needed an 83rd-minute equaliser from substitute Nicklas Bendtner to salvage a point at Koln, with the visitors having fallen behind to Simon Zoller's goal on the half hour.

Hecking was pleased by his side's fighting spirit but admitted that they had performed poorly and that an immediate improvement is required.

"That was not a good game on our behalf," he added. "Our display over 60 minutes was uninspired and had very little to do with high-tempo football.

"That was the case for a period against Frankfurt and it was even more noticeable here today. We need to turn things around very quickly.

"After an hour we got a better grip on proceedings and then we got our goal. That is one of my team's strengths. On the whole, though, I am not satisfied."

Wolfsburg, who sit fifth in the standings, next host Schalke at the Volkswagen Arena on Friday.

Bayern confirm thigh injury for Benatia

    kevin-volland-medhi-benatia-tsg-1899-hoffenheim-fc-bayern-munchen-bundesliga-03082015_1wfz9enqzro2013z82govahphd.jpg

Bayern Munich have confirmed Medhi Benatia faces a spell out of action after suffering a thigh injury.

The Moroccan centre-back limped off 36 minutes into the first half of Saturday's 2-1 win over Hoffenheim and was promptly replaced by Rafinha.

Bayern have since confirmed that Benatia has damaged a hamstring muscle but would not speculate on how long he will be out of action.

Sporting director Matthias Sammer admitted on Saturday that the injury did not look good.

"We think it's a muscular problem and I don't think it's just a minor injury," the ex-Germany international is quoted as saying by Abendzeitung Munchen.

Benatia is now expected to miss next Saturday's visit of Bayer Leverkusen, who finished third in last season's Bundesliga.

The unavailability of the former Roma man represents a major defensive headache for coach Pep Guardiola, as the 28-year-old's fellow centre-half Jerome Boateng was sent off in the 2-1 win at Hoffenheim.

Bayern had found themselves a goal down after just nine seconds of play in their second Bundesliga outing of the new season, with Kevin Volland opening the scoring for the home side.

However, the German champions deservedly levelled through Thomas Muller just before the break and then maintained their 100 per cent record thanks to Robert Lewandowski's last-minute goal.

Sammer admitted afterwards that Bayern are currently struggling to reproduce their very best form, but suggested no new players will be signed before the close of the transfer window.

"The team has seen today how hard it is going to be in the Bundesliga this season," Sammer added. "We still need to find our rhythm with each other.

"We're still lacking in some areas but the mentality is right. We need to show more cohesion.

"In the transfer window, everything is always possible because it is by nature so irrational. But we are not anxious to change anything too much as our squad is still great."

AC Milan to offer lifeline to Balotelli

    1802522_heroa.jpg

Mario Balotelli could be set for a shock reunion with AC Milan after Adriano Galliani confirmed the club have made a loan offer for the striker.

Goal understands that the Liverpool flop met with Rossoneri boss Sinisa Mihajlovic on Saturday to discuss a potential loan to San Siro, 12 months after departing for Anfield.

Balotelli and Mihajlovic worked together earlier in the 25-year-old's career when the coach was an assistant at Milan's rivals Inter, and the former defender is prepared to offer a lifeline to the striker, who has been frozen out at Anfield.

Milan desperately wanted Zlatan Ibrahimovic to return this summer but Paris Saint-Germain's refusal to sell their star striker has seen club CEO Galliani searching for alternatives, with the 71-year-old confirming that they are negotiating with Liverpool over a loan deal.

"We are dealing with Liverpool," he told Mediaset. "There's no agreement with them about the how much of his wage wage we should pay, but we're still talking with them.

"Balotelli convinced us to get him back, he is aware that we're giving him his very last chance."

Taking Balotelli on a season-long loan would mean Milan could evaluate whether they want to keep him or offer Ibrahimovic a contract once his deal at Parc des Princes expires next year.

Goal understands that Balotelli is currently in Italy having been given the weekend off by Liverpool. And while there is no truth to reports Balotelli will be paid a six-figure loyalty bonus by the Reds should he remain at the club beyond August 31, they are understood to be keen to explore options to offload the player.

Galliani admitted the club are looking to rekindle the love affair with the attacker who has supported the Rossoneri since childhood.

"Certain loves never die," he told Sky Sport. "They draw enormous circles and then they come back. Club president Silvio Berlusconi and I are two romantics."

Balotelli spent 18 months as a Milan forward before joining Liverpool for an estimated £16 million - roughly the same amount Milan bought him for in January 2013 - in the aftermath of the 2014 World Cup.

West Brom 2-3 Chelsea: Pedro shines on debut but Terry sees red as 10-man Blues edge precious win

    1820032_heroa.jpg

Pedro played a starring role but John Terry was sent off as Chelsea claimed their first win of the Premier League season with a thrilling 3-2 victory at West Brom on Sunday.

Chelsea signed Pedro from Barcelona on Thursday and the Spain forward made an instant impact at The Hawthorns.

The 28-year-old opened his account for the champions with a deflected 20th-minute strike, but only after the returning Thibaut Courtois had saved James Morrison's penalty six minutes earlier.

Jose Mourinho's men made it 2-0 on the half-hour mark when Pedro set up Diego Costa for his first goal of the campaign, before Morrison redeemed himself by pulling one back.

Cesar Azpilicueta's maiden Premier League goal then re-established Chelsea's command of the match as they went in 3-1 to the good at half-time.

However, Chelsea captain Terry - who was substituted at half-time of last week's chastening 3-0 loss at Manchester City - saw red early in the second period for hauling down Salomon Rondon.

West Brom, without Saido Berahino amid talk of an impending move to Tottenham, took advantage soon after through a superb Morrison header, but could not complete the comeback as 10-man Chelsea held on.

Costa dragged an early effort wide but Chelsea looked set to fall behind when Nemanja Matic tripped Callum McManaman just inside the area.

Morrison stepped up, but Courtois was equal to the midfielder's low spot-kick and turned the ball over the bar with his legs.

And West Brom were punished six minutes later as Eden Hazard flicked the ball into Pedro, whose left-footed shot from the edge of the area took a deflection off Jonas Olsson and into Boaz Myhill's bottom-left corner.

Chelsea then doubled their advantage with a superb counter-attack rounded off by Costa.

Willian fed the ball to Pedro and his shot across goal was turned in by international team-mate Costa from point-blank range.

A sloppy spell of Chelsea possession presented the hosts with a way back into the game as Rondon acrobatically turned James McClean's deep cross into the path of Morrison to lash a shot past Courtois.

More good work from Pedro was wasted as Willian spurned a glaring chance for 3-1, but Chelsea did restore their two-goal advantage through Azpilicueta's composed 42nd-minute finish after Costa had cushioned a ball over the top to the onrushing full-back.

Any hope of a comfortable second half for Chelsea evaporated with Terry's dismissal, and Tony Pulis' men capitalised five minutes later.

Morrison rose highest to head McManaman's excellent cross from the left in off the crossbar and set up a frantic finish.

Costa and Rondon went close at either end before McManaman spurned the best chance to earn a share of the spoils as Chelsea held firm to collect a hard-earned three points.

Mourinho hails 'fantastic' Chelsea but refuses to discuss John Terry red

    1820112_heroa.jpg

Jose Mourinho heaped praise on his "fantastic" Chelsea side following a hard-fought 3-2 win at West Brom, but refused to be drawn on John Terry's red card.

Chelsea scored three times in the first half, following Thibaut Courtois's early penalty save but were forced to hold on with 10 men as Terry was dismissed for a last-man challenge on Salomon Rondon.

And although Morrison netted twice following his spot-kick miss, the Blues held on to claim their first victory of the season.

Mourinho said: "They [Chelsea] played very well.

"Fantastic performance. We looked always dangerous, those three goals, they were short for the chances we created, the football we played.

"Then with ten men, the spirit, the possession, the fight in defensive areas and the intelligence to keep the ball in dangerous areas. More than happy."

Mourinho visibly laughed at Mark Clattenburg's decision to send off Terry but avoided questions when pressed on the incident by reporters.

He added: "I don't think [about the Terry sending off]. I prefer not to think, I prefer to do what I'm doing and what I try to do since the beginning of the championship which is to focus on the game."

Juventus confirm loan deal for Cuadrado imminent

    1793652_heroa.jpg

Juventus have reached an agreement with Juan Cuadrado over a season-long loan deal, Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed.

Cuadrado, a £23.3 million (€32m) January signing from Fiorentina, has failed to force his way into Jose Mourinho's plans at Chelsea and the arrival of Pedro this week has seen him slip further down the pecking order.

The Blues agreed to make the winger available for loan earlier this week after Juve had expressed an interest in bringing him to Turin, and the Colombia international has now accepted the chance to join the Serie A champions for the 2015-16 campaign.

Goal understands the 27-year-old is now expected in Turin in the next four hours in order to complete medical tests and Juve general director Giuseppe Marotta confirmed that the Colombia international will soon be a Bianconeri player.

"There is the opportunity to sign Cuadrado and we're going for it," he told Mediaset Premium. "Hopefully tomorrow we'll close the deal, he should arrive on loan for one season."

Cuadrado made just four Premier League starts under Mourinho as Chelsea clinched the title last season.

Ingolstadt 0-4 Borussia Dortmund: Reus leads rout to maintain perfect record

    1820532_heroa.jpg

Marco Reus and Shinji Kagawa were both on target as Borussia Dortmund made it six points from six in the Bundesliga with a 4-0 win over Ingolstadt.

The hosts weathered a first-half storm but could not deny Dortmund after the interval as Matthias Ginter scored his first goal for the club and Reus converted a penalty, before late strikes from Kagawa and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added gloss.

Ingolstadt – seeking to build on their opening-day win over Mainz – did show promise, though, and forced Roman Burki into some excellent saves.

But Tuchel's side, fresh from Thursday's thrilling 4-3 Europa League triumph over Odd, were worthy winners to make it back-to-back victories at the start of the league season.

Dortmund turned to Ginter – usually a centre-half – as a solution to their injury problems at right-back, but it was down the left, via the marauding runs of Marcel Schmelzer, that they posed the greatest threat in the first half.

The left-back picked out Reus inside the opening six minutes, but the Germany forward flashed a shot wide from 12 yards when he really ought to have scored.

Reus then looked to turn provider with his cut-back for Aubameyang, but he too proved wayward with his finishing, before the Gabon international came within inches of connecting with Ilkay Gundogan's delivery at the end of a surging run.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan was next to go close, toe-poking an effort narrowly wide of the far post after breaking free on the right-hand side of the penalty area in the 19th minute.

Despite Dortmund completely controlling the match, Ingolstadt goalkeeper Orjan Nyland had very few saves to make, though Aubameyang's tame volley did call the Norwegian into action midway through the first half.

Otherwise it was a series of poor finishes that prevented Dortmund from making their dominance count, with Kagawa's looping off-target shot providing another example of their profligacy before the interval.

Those misses could have been made to look even more costly had Burki not produced a superb save to deny Moritz Hartmann at the start of the second half.

But the breakthrough finally came in the 56th minute when Ginter collected Mkhitaryan's pass and cut inside Konstantin Engel before finishing low past Nyland.

It took just five minutes for Tuchel's side to double their lead, with Schmelzer fouled in the box by Hartmann and Reus confidently firing home the resulting spot-kick.

Burki kept out substitute Stefan Lex's powerful drive at the other end as last season's 2.Bundesliga champions sought an instant response, while Nyland produced two stunning saves to thwart Reus and Mats Hummels in quick succession.

Nyland was helpless to prevent Kagawa adding the third with five minutes remaining, though, as the former Manchester United midfielder found the net from 12 yards out, while Aubameyang's injury-time goal from close range rubbed salt in Ingolstadt's wounds.

Watford 0-0 Southampton: Horrendous Capoue miss costs Hornets

    1820992_heroa.jpg

Watford were made to pay for missing two gilt-edged opportunities as Southampton held on for a 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road on Sunday.

Quique Sanchez Flores' men now have three draws from as many games on their return to the top flight, after Southampton seemed to show the hallmarks of a team given a thorough midweek workout in the Europa League.

Ronald Koeman's side were held 1-1 by Midtjylland on Thursday and were unable to break down a well-drilled Watford, who had the better of the chances.

A frustrating afternoon for Saints - who named Victor Wanyama in their side amid speculation over his future - was made worse by the injury-enforced first-half withdrawal of Sadio Mane.

Replacement Shane Long offered something of a threat in Mane's stead but the likes of Ikechi Anya, Troy Deeney and debutant Alessandro Diamanti proved more dangerous for the hosts.

Odion Ighalo and Capoue spurned golden opportunities in either half for Watford - the latter heading over with the goal at his mercy - as the spoils were shared in a somewhat forgettable encounter.

Watford brought in Jose Holebas for Miguel Layun, allowing Anya to form part of an attacking trio behind Deeney.

The Scotland international was key to the hosts' bright start, although Southampton had the first real chance courtesy of Mane and his blistering pace.

Mane - a reported recent target for Manchester United - raced past Craig Cathcart but saw his dangerous cross cleared by the Watford defence.

Koeman's side grew into the contest but their momentum was checked when Mane was forced off 25 minutes in having been involved in two robust challenges.

A Holebas strike prior to the half-hour seemed destined to trouble Maarten Stekelenburg only for Deeney to get in the way, but clear-cut chances were at a premium until Watford created the best opportunity of the opening period five minutes before the break.

The lively Anya drilled a dangerous ball across goal, yet Ighalo was unable to make contact.

Flores handed Diamanti a Watford debut at the start of the second half, but it was Southampton who threatened early, Graziano Pelle's strike and a flicked header from Long testing Heurelho Gomes.

As Watford responded, Diamanti offered a glimpse of his quality with a cross that narrowly evaded Deeney before Capoue spurned a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock.

The Frenchman could only angle Deeney's flick-on over the crossbar, while the best Southampton could muster at the other end came courtesy of long-range efforts from Wanyama and Cedric Soares.

While the game opened up late on, there was to be no winner, although Watford could take heart from another competitive showing as Southampton's sluggish start to the campaign continued.

Everton 0-2 Man City: Kolarov & Nasri maintain visitors' perfect start

    1821042_heroa.jpg

Aleksandar Kolarov and Samir Nasri were on target as Manchester City beat Everton 2-0 at Goodison Park to equal their club record of nine consecutive top-flight wins.

Not since 1912 had City reeled off nine victories in a row in the top tier, but Kolarov's second-half strike and substitute Nasri's fine late finish ensured they achieved that feat on Sunday to make it three wins out of three at the start of the new Premier League season.

Manuel Pellegrini's side made a statement of intent by outclassing champions Chelsea in a 3-0 victory last weekend and were hugely impressive once again seven days on.

The outstanding David Silva struck the post and, although Romelu Lukaku had a goal disallowed for offside and rattled the crossbar with a free-kick in the first half, City were worthy winners as they secured only their fourth league victory at Goodison in their last 19 visits.

Three points ensured City returned to the top of the table, while Everton were brought back down to earth following their 3-0 win at Southampton last weekend as they suffered a first Premier League defeat of the season.

City new boy Nicolas Otamendi was unable to make his debut as he waits for a work permit and Pablo Zabaleta was ruled out due to injury, but fit-again midfielder Fabian Delph was named among the substitutes as Pellegrini fielded the same side that started against Chelsea.

Everton, unchanged following their victory at Southampton, were given a scare after only a minute when Silva's shot deflected into the path of Sergio Aguero and his strike from a tight angle was well kept out by Tim Howard.

City were zipping the ball around with supreme confidence and Howard again got down well to deny Aguero after a slick, incisive passing move from the visitors nine minutes in.

The home side weathered the storm and Lukaku had the ball in the back of the net midway through the first half, but the striker was ruled to be marginally offside.

Everton defender Brendan Galloway was withdrawn after suffering an injury when challenging Bacary Sagna as he surged into the penalty area, with Tyias Browning replacing him just before half-time.

And there was still time for Lukaku to hit the crossbar with a free-kick in stoppage time at the end of an enthralling first half.

The dangerous Silva was causing all sorts of problems and he rattled the post with a left-foot strike just after the interval following a fine pass from former Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling, who was a real threat on his return to Merseyside.

Sterling then played a key role in the opening goal just before the hour mark, taking a pass from Silva before waiting for Kolarov to overlap and laying the ball off the full-back, who beat Howard at his near post from a tight angle.

Howard was beaten too easily, but the American kept Everton in it soon after when he stood up to thwart Jesus Navas one-on-one after the winger raced into the area.

Vincent Kompany cleared Gareth Barry's header off the line as Everton attempted to rescue a point, but Nasri sealed the points by lifting the ball over Howard into the net two minutes from time after Yaya Toure picked him out with a clever first-time pass.

Perfect Pedro debut throws Man Utd folly into sharper focus

    1821032_heroa.jpg

Chelsea took just 24 hours to show Pedro Rodriguez more commitment to a summer transfer than Manchester United had in two months. "Maybe Manchester United fell asleep," the player's agent, Antonio Sanz, told Radio Club Tenerife. "The negotiation with Chelsea was like a lightning bolt.”

Pedro appreciated Chelsea’s speed and decisiveness in the transfer market; at the Hawthorns on Sunday he decided to respond in kind. Within 45 minutes the diminutive Spaniard had ignited Jose Mourinho’s title defence and exposed the scale of Louis van Gaal’s folly.

The decision to start Pedro – after just three days of training with the Chelsea first team – was a surprise. Mourinho is a coach who demands that every single one of his players fully understands his tactical instructions before trusting them in the heat of battle. After the match he revealed his new signing had learned quickly.

“He came with [pre-season] minutes, with intensity, so it was a question of understanding,” the Portuguese told reporters. “We worked tactically every day since he arrived, so he could understand the team and the team could understand what he needs. I think it was a very good performance.”

There was certainly no lack of understanding with Eden Hazard, who provided the pass for Pedro’s slightly fortuitous debut goal in the 20th minute and dovetailed with his new team-mate beautifully all afternoon. Craig Dawson and Chris Brunt could not deal with Chelsea’s attacking pincer movement of fast, jinking threats from both flanks, and by the end of the season one suspects they will be far from alone among tortured Premier League full-backs.

Pedro’s first assist in English football followed just 10 minutes after his first goal and again benefited from a slice of fortune; Diego Costa sliding along the wet turf to jab home a swing of the boot that was no more a cross than a shot. He should have had a second, deliberate one soon afterwards, cutting inside as West Brom defenders slipped and slid past him to find Willian, only for the Brazilian to apply a scandalously poor finish to a brilliant move.

But the Spain international’s overall performance dwarfed his direct contribution to the scoreline, constantly darting into space, finding team-mates with sharp passes and running himself into the ground in his desire to protect the floundering Branislav Ivanovic.

Tactically and technically it was pitch perfect, a masterclass in modern wingplay that threw United’s slow, turgid attacking display at home to Newcastle on Saturday into even sharper focus. How could Van Gaal reportedly baulk at paying an extra £3 million for a player that he had identified only days before as being precisely the kind of fast, penetrating threat his squad needed?

United continue to search for Van Gaal’s fundamental “balance” with Juan Mata labouring as a No.10 parked on the right flank and Adnan Januzaj cutting a nervous figure as a winger deployed centrally. Chelsea, in contrast, identified the need for another elite goal threat from wide areas and got a man with the mentality and skillset to slot in immediately.
Such decisions do more than affect the fortunes of teams – they can make or break champions, though there was enough evidence at the Hawthorns to suggest that it will take more than Pedro’s darting brilliance to solidify Chelsea as favourites to retain their title.

Ivanovic has yet to find a Premier League winger he can lay a glove on this season, John Terry did nothing to dispel questions about his long-term viability at the top level with a desperate tug on the impressive Salomon Rondon and Nemanja Matic compounded a rash early challenge on James McClean in the penalty area by failing to get close to James Morrison for either of his goals.

Terry’s dismissal turned much of the second half into something resembling a siege and as Gary Cahill attempted to marshall a weary and uncomfortable Chelsea defence to the final whistle, Pedro was sacrificed for the final six minutes in favour of John Obi Mikel. The fact the former Barca man left the field after Willian and Costa highlighted just how much trust Mourinho already has in his new man.

Chelsea’s problems should diminish as the sharpness returns, and further transfer arrivals could also ease the process. But one of Mourinho’s new faces already looks capable of leading the way, and every reminder of his talents should prompt fresh waves of embarrassment at Old Trafford.

Mourinho on Pedro debut: It wasn't quite Maradona, but it was close

Jose Mourinho has compared Pedro to Diego Maradona after the new signing played a key role in Chelsea's first Premier League win of the season.

The £21 million arrival from Barcelona opened his account after less than 20 minutes, before assisting Diego Costa as the champions held off a resilient West Brom side to win 3-2 at the Hawthorns on Sunday.

Mourinho admitted to concern over how quickly Pedro would adapt to Premier League football, having spent his entire professional career with Barca, but never doubted the 28-year-old's ability.

"He wasn't quite Maradona but he was close," Mourinho told Chelsea TV. "He’s a very good player. There is always a question mark because of how many top players come to England and don’t perform immediately.

"We have examples in our club and there are lots of examples at other clubs, so it’s very nice for him to come and straight away perform the way he did.

"I expected him to perform like that because he had a good pre-season, and he played three competitive matches. He came with minutes, with intensity, so it was not a question of intensity and condition, it was a question of understanding.

"We worked tactically every day since he arrived for him to try to understand the team and for the team to try to understand what he wants and needs. It was a very good performance."

Juventus 0-1 Udinese: Thereau stuns wasteful champions

    1820962_heroa.jpg

Juventus were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal as Udinese snatched a late strike to seal a 1-0 win in Turin.

Thereau ghosted in at the back post with 12 minutes to play to fire Udinese to all three points in Stefano Colantuono's first league game at the helm.

After scoring 72 top-flight goals last season as they romped to a fourth successive title, Juve were uncharacteristically profligate on Sunday as they lost on home soil on the opening day for the first time.

Udinese had to ride their luck at times, with Orestis Karnezis' goal leading a charmed life as Mario Mandzukic and Roberto Pereyra went closest.

But it was at the other end that the breakthrough came as Thereau provided a close-range finish past an exposed Gianluigi Buffon.

Massimiliano Allegri used all three of his substitutions in the second half, but failed to get the desired response as Juve were stunned by a side that finished 16th last season.

Allegri's new-look Juve began life without Andrea Pirlo, Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal on the front foot, with Kingsley Coman particularly lively in attack alongside Mandzukic.

Midway through a half dominated by Juve, Pereyra was presented with the clearest opening after a mazy run from Coman, but the Argentine failed to get enough power in his shot to worry Karnezis.

Juve's failure to convert possession into goals nearly cost them on the half hour as Ali Adnan – the first Iraqi player in Serie A – jinked through two tackles on the edge of the penalty area, but his effort was the wrong side of Buffon's left-hand post.

Late pressure from the hosts saw Stephan Lichtsteiner sting the palms of Karnezis with a low drive from the right, before Mandzukic headed over a superb cross from the Swiss full-back.

Determined to get their campaign off to a positive start, Juve raised the tempo even further after the restart, but once again were let down by the quality of their finishing.

Mandzukic was unable to turn a diving header goalwards, Simone Padoin fluffed his lines 12 yards from goal after Coman's pass and Pereyra got the ball stuck under his feet five yards out in a frantic five minutes before the hour.

Thereau then stunned the Juventus Stadium with the game's only goal after 78 minutes, the unmarked Frenchman pouncing on a Panagiotis Kone cross to fire past Buffon.

Substitute Paulo Dybala led the charge on Udinese's goal in the closing minutes, but Juve's 47-game unbeaten streak at home in the league came to an end.

'The expendables' step up for Manchester City as impressive start continues... and there's more to come

    1821202_heroa.jpg

Manchester City's results at Goodison Park tend to reflect their fortunes over the entire season, so it will come as a great relief to Manuel Pellegrini that their lesser lights stepped up here to to provide an impressive victory in what has been a traditionally bruising and often damaging fixture.

In late 2013 it was a 2-0 defeat which all but dashed their chances of winning the Premier League; in late 2014 it was a thrilling victory which moved the title closer to the Etihad Stadium; last season it was a 1-1 draw: not too good, not too bad.

But this 2-0 victory was as close to routine as has been possible in this corner of Merseyside in recent years and it was thanks to some unlikely heroes.

It was an early season clash which was always going to provide a big examination of City's title credentials, and it must be said they passed with flying colours. Even with Sergio Aguero strangely quiet after going close to scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes, and Yaya Toure largely static until his late flash of brilliance, the visitors still had enough about them to win comfortably.

After a summer of criticism, the resurgent performances of Toure, Aguero, David Silva and Vincent Kompany in the back-to-back 3-0 victories this season have been music to the ears of City fans.

But here it was the expendables who proved to be the difference, even if Silva and Kompany did provide a solid foundation for the win.

Aleksandar Kolarov has been rotated in and out of the side over the past few seasons but he is enjoying some continuity and he too has started this campaign brilliantly; the goal he scored with an hour gone here had been signposted long before today.

And with Kevin De Bruyne expected to arrive before the end of the transfer window, a signing sure to add yet another dimension to a dangerous attack, Samir Nasri was given just 13 minutes to show that he can still provide the killer touch after a difficult 2014-15 season. He duly obliged, linking up with Toure to ghost into the box and clip a delightful finish past Tim Howard to wrap up the victory.

Kolarov's defensive colleague Bacary Sagna has barely been given the chance to shine during his time at the Etihad Stadium so far either, but Pablo Zabaleta's injury has given him another month to prove his worth and he continued here with another solid display at right-back. Eliaquim Mangala, too, showed once again that he will not simply be cast aside to make room for Nicolas Otamendi.

These are signs that things are coming togther for City this season. If cynics say West Brom provided little resistance in the opening game and Chelsea's deficiencies were ruthlessly exposed last Sunday, a tough trip to Everton would always provide a completely different challenge.

But Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku, who have started the season well themselves and will cause many more teams problems this season, were kept at arm's length for the most part and even with Aguero and Toure not enjoying their finest afternoons City had enough to ride out the storm and keep playing their game.

That was thanks in no small part to David Silva, the protagonist as always, but it was the interventions of Kolarov and Nasri which proved decisive.

Pellegrini, in his understated manner, acknowledged the importance of victory at Goodison but insisted, as is his wont, that only the next game matters.

Asked whether the early season praise means anything, he replied: "We do not care about that, we care just about beating Everton and now we must care about Watford. What people think about our team is not our problem, we need to prove that we are a consistent team until the end. That’s why it was important to win here because Everton are a difficult team and in the last seasons it has been difficult here."

City equalled a club record nine consecutive victories in the process and it would be a brave man to back against another for Pellegrini's side against the Hornets next Saturday.

With Raheem Sterling finding his way into the team slowly but very surely, Silva prompting and probing as ever and Toure and Aguero sure to bounce back, that would ordinarily be enough for a serious title challenge.

But with the back five - protected by the astute Fernandinho - yet to concede a goal this season and players like Kolarov and Nasri chipping in with important goals in tricky circumstances, things really could not be going much better for Manchester City right now.
