Bale promises 'plenty of goals' for Real Madrid

    gareth-bale_b011irkgx85ezcky329zupj4.jpg

Gareth Bale has vowed that Real Madrid will score "plenty of goals" this season despite their disappointing goalless draw with Sporting Gijon on Sunday.

Rafael Benitez's first competitive game in charge ended in a 0-0 draw as Madrid failed to find a way through a resilient home side.

Bale, however, is adamant the team is improving on daily basis and insists they will show more attacking flair this term.

"We are getting better all the time. We're learning, training and improving. With each game that passes we are becoming an even stronger unit," he told reporters at a sponsor event.

"Obviously we are going to be an attacking side. We need to improve at the back, but we're still working on being an exciting team, one that will be going out to win everything. We've only played the first Liga game of the season. We didn't score, but I'm 100 per cent sure we'll get plenty of goals."

The Wales international also played down concerns over a toe injury picked up in Sunday's draw.

"Everything is fine, I underwent tests this morning just to be certain and we saw that it was just a knock. There's nothing to worry about, I'm perfectly fine."

Madrid return to action against Real Betis on Saturday.

Dybala can be the new Messi, insists Zamparini

    paulo-dybala-juventus-23082015_101znlj6scdv61lmvmgqgh7c90.jpg

Paulo Dybala can be the new Lionel Messi within the next three years, according to Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, who hit out at Massimiliano Allegri for not understanding the attacker.

The 21-year-old joined the Serie A champions this summer for an initial fee of €32 million and scored on his competitive debut in the Supercoppa win over Lazio.

The Argentine was a substitute in the shock 1-0 defeat to Udinese, however, with Kingsley Koman preferred as Mario Mandzukic's partner from the start.

Juve boss Massimiliano Allegri has claimed that Dybala "needs to grow" if he is to nail down a regular starting spot, but Zamparini has hit out at the former AC Milan coach for not utilising Dybala's talent correctly.

"If someone has to grow at Juve, it's the coach, not the Argentine," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"Allegri is like all Italian coaches, he thinks he can influence the game, but he doesn't understand that talented players must be let loose.

"I'm backing Dybala because I've never seen a player so strong at my Palermo. Within two or three years, he could become the new Messi.

"Juve have got a great deal with him."

'I'm happy to be back' - Balotelli completes AC Milan medical

Mario Balotelli says he is happy to be back in Serie A after completing a medical ahead of a loan switch to AC Milan.

The Italy international arrived in the city early on Tuesday as he prepares to finalise a season-long loan move back to San Siro from Liverpool.

Speaking to reporters outside the La Madonnina clinic, he said: "I'm happy to be back.

"I'm fit, I just need to train with my team-mates. I don't want want to talk too much, I'm only focused on working hard because I want to have a good season."

The 25-year-old, who grew up in Brescia, dispelled suggestions that he felt like he was coming home, however.

"No, my home is in Brescia," he said simply.

Balotelli, who scored just once in 16 Premier League appearances last season, has been frozen out of Brendan Rodgers' plans at Liverpool.

The former Manchester City man scored 30 goals in 54 appearances during his first spell with Milan between 2012 and 2014.

Cabaye: No big clubs wanted me

    cabaye-cropped_ql5d9a66pk881adq5nk5gntzn.jpg

Yohan Cabaye has admitted that no "big" Premier League clubs were in the running for his signature when he opted to join Crystal Palace.

Palace completed one of the coups of the transfer window when they shelled out a club-record fee to bring France international Cabaye back to England following his frustrating spell at Paris Saint-Germain.

The move to Selhurst Park reunited Cabaye with Alan Pardew, under whom he enjoyed two-and-a-half impressive years at Newcastle United before leaving for PSG in January 2014.

Speaking to French television programme Canal Football Club, midfielder Cabaye - who scored on his Premier League debut for Palace - said: "No one from the big clubs came forward, but it's not a default choice [signing for Palace] - far from it.

"I have been reunited with my former coach and I was not heading into the unknown. I feel really good."

On his time with PSG, the 29-year-old added: "It didn't go as I wanted in Paris, but I have no hard feelings towards anyone.

"It's hard when you know you're in a team where you're going to try things and, in the end, when you try them, sometimes you pull them off and sometimes not.

"I know that when I arrived, perhaps there were certain players that didn't want me to come. As soon as there was a ball lost, an interception missed or not the right pass, people would shout, would look at you strangely."

De Bruyne training with Wolfsburg amid Manchester City medical reports

    kevin-de-bruyne-vfl-wolfsburg-bundesliga-16082015_1rh91o5tosidk1olvaxbvkjj2j.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne will train with Wolfsburg this afternoon despite reports claiming he was set to fly to England on Tuesday to finalise a move to Manchester City, the German club have revealed.

The Belgian playmaker is City's top remaining summer target and last week Goal reported that the Premier League pace-setters are prepared to smash their transfer record to land him before the close of the transfer window.

Several reports in England claimed that De Bruyne would fly to Manchester on Tuesday to finalise the terms of a transfer worth as much as £50 million, but Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking has confirmed that his prized asset will take part in an afternoon session with his team-mates at Wolfsburg's Aller Park training complex.

"Kevin De Bruyne will train with us this afternoon," Hecking told reporters.

De Bruyne joined Wolfsburg in January 2014 having failed to establish himself in the Chelsea first team under Jose Mourinho but has since blossomed into one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe, notching 10 goals and 20 assists in the Bundesliga last season.

Earlier this week Bayern Munich handed City a major boost in their pursuit of De Bruyne by confirming that they will make no approach for the Belgian this summer.

Manchester City close in on Aleix Garcia capture

    1829842_heroa.jpg

Manchester City are close to securing the signing of Villarreal youngster Aleix Garcia, Goal has learned.

The 18-year-old winger will arrive in England on Tuesday to complete a deal which could land his current club up to £2 million depending on his progress at the Etihad Stadium.

Garcia made his senior debut as a 17-year-old on the final weekend of last season, coming on for the final 12 minutes of the Yellow Submarine's 4-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.

As a 16-year-old, and one of the youngest members of the squad, he made three appearances for Villarreal B in the Spanish second tier during the 2013-14 campaign, and a further seven last term before he was blooded in the first team.

Elsewhere, City remain hopeful of completing a deal in excess of £50 million for Wolfsburg's Kevin De Bruyne.

Dieter Hecking, the Bundesliga club's head coach, insisted De Bruyne will be in training on Tuesday amid reports that he is set to join Garcia in flying to England and signing for City.

Officials from both clubs have been in talks since the middle of last week and negotiations are continuing despite rumours in Germany that Bayern Munich could make a late move.

Ramsey calls for technology after disallowed Arsenal goal

    aaronramseycropped_q9enbg0gz0j21qrznluy745mx.jpg

Aaron Ramsey has called for the introduction of video technology after seeing a goal disallowed for offside during Arsenal's goalless draw with Liverpool on Monday.

Ramsey thought he had put Arsene Wenger's side in front when he slotted home after only 10 minutes of Monday's Premier League encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

However, the 24-year-old's effort was ruled out despite replays showing he was onside and the Wales international believes the powers that be at the Premier League should follow the lead of rugby by utilising technology.

"I thought I held my run a bit, I thought I was onside, but I obviously took a glance over to make sure and saw the flag was up," Ramsey told reporters.

"The replays suggest I was onside; it should have stood – but obviously the linesman thought it was offside. At the end of the day we should have been 1-0 up. To look at a video for 20 seconds would have maybe changed the outcome of the game.

"I think we could take a leaf out of rugby – they do it really well. You see it on the screens, they go off for 20 seconds and they get the decision right in the end.

"We tried to push for the goal, but it didn't quite happen. A few times they went on the counterattack and you need all your players to perform on a night like that."

Arsenal have now failed to score in five of their last six Premier League matches at the Emirates Stadium and lie ninth in the table after three matches, five points adrift of early leaders Manchester City.

West Brom reject second Tottenham bid for Berahino

    628641_heroa.jpg

West Brom have confirmed they have rejected a second bid from Tottenham - believed to be around the £22 million mark - for striker Saido Berahino.

Berahino was left out of the Baggies squad that faced Chelsea on Sunday before boss Tony Pulis admitted that the 22-year-old was not mentally focused enough to feature in the game.

On Monday West Brom confirmed that they had rejected a formal transfer request from Berahino and despite Tottenham's latest approach, the club remain adamant their prized asset will not be sold this summer.

"West Bromwich Albion can today confirm the club have rejected a second offer from Tottenham Hotspur for Saido Berahino," a statement on the club's official website read.

Chairman Jeremy Peace added: "Our position remains unchanged. The sale of this player is not on our agenda."

Berahino is understood to be Tottenham's top target as they look to provide attacking support for Harry Kane, who has scored just two goals in his last 11 Premier League matches.

Chelsea flop Cuadrado a perfect fit for Juventus

    1793652_heroa.jpg

Juan Cuadrado touched down in Italy on Monday evening and was promptly mobbed by Juventus supporters as he tried to make his way to the car waiting to whisk him away to Turin ahead of his proposed loan move from Chelsea.

Blues fans could be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss was about. After all, many are still trying to work out why their side decided to splash £23.3 million (€32 million) on the Colombia international during the January transfer window. They had expected to see the thrilling winger that had illuminated last year's World Cup in Brazil; a mix of industry and ingenuity that seemed certain to slot straight into Jose Mourinho's first team - yet ended up appearing unworthy of the reserves.

Juve, though, could barely contain their excitement at having agreed a loan deal with Chelsea for the former Fiorentina ace. "He's arrived!" read a message released on their official Twitter feed on Monday. "And he immediately got an extraordinary welcome."

And that was in Milan! Cuadrado is guaranteed an even warmer greeting in Turin. The sense of excitement among the Bianconeri faithful is understandable, though. Cuadrado has attracted attention since he first arrived in Italy in 2009, when he joined Udinese from Independiente Medellin. Indeed, Mourinho - then in his second and final season at Inter - was immediately taken with the Colombian and never stopped tracking his progress.

Despite spending two years in Udine, it was only during a loan spell at Lecce during the 2011-12 season that Cuadrado really began to prosper, earning himself a move to Fiorentina, where he flourished, becoming one of the most exciting and versatile wing-backs in Serie A.

Former Viola forward Luca Toni was so awestruck by a particularly energetic and incisive display against Juventus three years ago that he jokingly asked his young team-mate: "Did you have a scooter? It seemed like you were going up and down that flank on a Vespa!"

Juventus have been watching Cuadrado closely ever since. In February of last year, former boss Antonio Conte instructed director general Giuseppe Marotta and sporting director Fabio Paratici to sign the South American. In a bid to give greater versatility to a side reliant on 3-5-2, the coach wanted a player capable of playing wide right in both his first-choice formation and an alternative 4-3-3 system.

Conte may have departed that summer - tellingly, over a failure to acquire his chosen transfer targets - but the desire for tactical flexibility remained and has now been embraced by his successor, Massimiliano Allegri.

As Marotta acknowledged before Sunday's Serie A opener against Udinese: "Our interest is not in taking players for specific roles... If we search for players for only one position, we risk limiting ourselves to players not of the highest level."

The message was clear: Juve want new recruits of quality and adaptability. Cuadrado ticks both boxes as the personification of versatility; a player as comfortable attacking as he is defending. Indeed, the offensively-minded Brazil full-back Dani Alves last year welcomed Barcelona's reported interest in signing the then-Viola ace as his potential replacement: "If they can recruit him, then I encourage them to do it," he said.

Former Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella also noted after Cuadrado bagged both goals in a 2-1 win over Chievo in October 2013 that his most prized possession was not just restricted to playing on one flank. "Juan is unique with his characteristics, as he scored while playing wide on the left in a 4-3-3 yet almost netted again playing on the right in a 3-5-2. So, he can do anything."

Montella even came to the conclusion that Cuadrado had the requisite intelligence and vision to play off a No.9. In that sense, it is tempting to suggest that Cuadrado could also be the unlikely answer to Allegri’s pleas for a trequartista to be signed before August 31.

However, the smarter - and far more likely - option will be to deploy him on the right, with Montella explaining: “Cuadrado loves to play wide on the flank. He likes to 'feel' the touchline because he can be unpredictable for the opposition from there.”

Indeed, we are talking about a player that former Fiorentina and Bayern Munich forward Mario Gomez claims is on “the same level as [Franck] Ribery” and that Thierry Henry says is a striker’s dream: “He’s a special player. He can beat anyone at any time and he’s a proper winger also – that’s something you don’t see often now; guys that want to go down the line and beat people and cross. That’s what you want if you’re a striker.”

That will be music to the ears of Juve centre-forward Mario Mandzukic, who was not given anything to work with from out wide in the shock 1-0 loss at home to Udinese, with both of the hosts' wing-backs, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Patrice Evra, looking well past their sell-by-dates as they struggled to get up and down their respective flanks. As Fabio Licari wrote in his match report in the Gazzetta dello Sport: “Allegri would have killed for Cuadrado.”

Still, Juve have belatedly got their man, a winger who offers blistering pace, endless energy and a multitude of tactical options - precisely what Allegri has been crying out for. Cuadrado may not have fit in at Chelsea, but there should always be a place for him in the Juventus starting line-up – whatever system they play.

Chelsea target Stones hands in transfer request at Everton

    1820492_heroa.jpg

John Stones has handed in a formal transfer request to Everton as he bids to force through a summer move to Chelsea, Goal understands.

Chelsea have already seen offers of £20 million and £26m rejected for the 21-year-old defender this summer but earlier this month Goal reported that the Premier League champions were confident an improved bid of £30m would be enough to persuade Everton to sell their prized asset.

Stones informed boss Roberto Martinez earlier in the summer that he would like to move to Stamford Bridge and has now made his desire to leave Goodison Park official.

The 21-year-old's decision comes only a day after West Brom confirmed that they had rejected a similar request from striker Saido Berahino amid persistent interest from Tottenham.

Everton are likely to follow a similar course but despite Martinez's public insistence that Stones is going nowhere, there is a growing acceptance around Goodison Park that Chelsea will get their man with an offer around the £30m mark.

Jose Mourinho has identified Stones as the perfect long-term replacement for club captain John Terry, whose first-team future is the subject of renewed speculation after his half-time substitution against Manchester City and straight red card for hauling down Salomon Rondon against West Brom on Sunday.

Martinez has expressed his anger on several occasions with Chelsea's public pursuit of Stones, who has started all three of Everton's Premier League matches this season despite the uncertainty over his future.

But the pressure on the Merseysiders to accept the departure of one of English football's brightest young talents will only increase now the player has taken matters into his own hands.

Galatasaray wanted Robben and Ibrahimovic, claims Fener chief

    arjen-robben-bayern-munich-champions-league_1qidmplolo37y1n1kwoa5on8v5.jpg

Galatasaray enquired about the availability of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Arjen Robben in recent months, Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildrim claims.

Last season's Turkish champions have been overshadowed by their neighbours in the transfer market - with their rivals acquiring Robin van Persie and Nani from Manchester United among several other purchases.Galatasaray have made five new signings themselves, but Lukas Podolski was the highest profile of those in a low-key summer of transfer activity.

But according to Aziz, they had set their sights on attracting two of Europe's biggest names."Galatasaray spoke to Ibra a month ago," he said. "He has a contract with PSG for one more year.

"Our sporting director Guilliano Terraneo called Mino Raiola and asked him what Ibrahimovic's situation was at PSG, but Raiola said if he left it would be for Fenerbahce and not Gala."Ibra is getting about €14 million from PSG and they are thinking about extending his contract for two more years.

"However, he could leave PSG for Milan. I do not know what is going to be happen but he could join Fenerbahce next year as well."He added: "We also talked with Bayern about Robben but they do not want to sell him."

Van Gaal: Fellaini will play as a forward this season

    1802462_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal says Marouane Fellaini will play as a striker for Manchester United this season.

Speaking to reporters ahead of their Champions League play-off second leg clash with Club Brugge, Van Gaal said: "He can play as a no.9 and a no.10, and he can also play as a no.6 and no.8.

"This year he wiil play more as a no.9 and no.10 rather than 6 and 8 because there we have other players."

Fellaini struggled in his first term at Old Trafford under David Moyes but bounced back to have a moderately successful 2014-15 season.

He has missed the first three league games of the current campiagn due to suspension, but snatched a crucial late goal in the first leg with Brugge at Old Trafford to give United a key 3-1 lead.

And the 27-year-old Belgian says he has no quarms about stepping in among the forward line.

"In the past I have played no.9 and no.10. I have to help the team. I can play there," he insisted.

"It's not important where I play, the most important thing is to win the game. Of course it's different but I enjoy all the positions I can play in."

And he added that he is looking forward to backing up his improvement last term with another season of key contributions.

"Everyone knows my first season was difficult, but now it's in the past. I look forward," he added.

"Last season I did quite well and I want to continue. I know my team-mates, the manager and his philosophy. I am looking to do well and score goals."

United take a two-goal lead to the Jan Breydelstadion on Wednesday, but Van Gaal insists his players cannot get ahead of themselves and agreed that this represents their biggest game of the season.

"It was our aim to participate in the Champions League. We are still not there yet, it's very important," he added.

"We have to play the game, at the end you have to have scored one goal more than the opponent. They have beaten Greek opponents [Panathinaikos] 3-0, they are capable of doing that with the suppoot of their fans."

Martinez hopeful of completing Mori & Rodriguez signings

    robertomartinez-cropped_1areqvmpmsiri1hd32li3vv564.jpg

Everton manager Roberto Martinez is hopeful of signing South American duo Ramiro Funes Mori and Leandro Rodriguez before the transfer deadline, but has cooled speculation regarding the possible acquisition of Andriy Yarmolenko.

River Plate centre-back Mori was at Goodison Park for Sunday's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, with the Toffees keen to lure him to England in the coming days.

The 24-year-old could be joined by River Plate Montevideo striker Rodriguez, but Martinez has remained coy on a possible move for Yarmolenko.

On Mori, Martinez told reporters: "That's the only one I can speak about because he has been with us, we have permission from River Plate.

"At the moment it hasn't been concluded but we feel positive about the outcome. We have a very good relationship with River Plate and we hope that we can get Ramiro as an Everton player over the next few hours.

"We're quite confident we can get the points needed to get the work permit.

"That's the only name I can discuss because there have been too many names that are way off the mark.

"Leandro [is a] very talented young man, from window to window we always keep an eye on those with a real potential to reach a good level with the first team.

"At the moment there is nothing to announce but he would fit into that outstanding young talent like with Mason Holgate. He's a player we'd love to get a positive outcome on."

Martinez - who did not comment on the speculation regarding Chelsea's interest in John Stones - added of Yarmolenko: "I can't get into any details or transfer speculation in players leaving or arriving.

"I'm trying to give as much clarity as I can in naming names that we have permission to speak about but anything else there is nothing to comment."

    :dull:Cillessen: I won't be joining Manchester United

    jaspercillessen-cropped_1igoo9gxmib9j1ez32hr190dj8.jpg

Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen does not expect to move to Manchester United this summer, despite links with a move to Old Trafford.

The Netherlands international had reportedly been identified as a potential acquisition with United preparing for the possible departure of David De Gea to Real Madrid.

However, United signed Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero on a free transfer earlier this summer and the 28-year-old has subsequently started all four matches for Louis van Gaal's side this season, and Cillessen expects to stay at Amsterdam ArenA for the 2015-16 season.

"As far as I know it [interest from Manchester United] has never been a thing," he told NOS.

"I, the club, or my agent have never heard anything. As for me, this season begins and ends at Ajax."

Cillessen has made six appearances in all competitions for the Dutch giants so far this season.

Lamela in talks with Inter over summer move, reveals father

    1289162_heroa.jpg

Erik Lamela is in negotiations with Inter over a potential summer move, his father and agent has revealed.

The winger joined Tottenham from Roma in 2013 for a club-record fee of £25.7 million but has failed to adjust to life in England, scoring just five goals in 46 appearances in all competitions last season.

Lamela has played a part in all of Spurs’ games thus far this season but is believed to be expendable at White Hart Lane and Jose Lamela, his father and agent, has now confirmed that Inter are attempting to sign his son.

"We're talking with Inter, their interest is real,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We're waiting for some news, we are willing to start a negotiation. We would come back in Serie A and we like Inter option.”

Tottenham have sold a number of fringe players this summer but are continuing to pursue West Brom striker Saido Berahino, though they saw a second bid for the forward rejected on Tuesday.

Monaco 2-1 Valencia (agg 3-4): Negredo strike edges Los Che through

    1831292_heroa.jpg

Valencia dumped Monaco out of this season's Champions League despite losing 2-1 at the Stade Louis II on Tuesday, with the Spaniards progressing to the group stage 4-3 on aggregate.

With Los Che having triumphed 3-1 at Mestalla last week, Alvaro Negredo looked to have put the outcome beyond all doubt when he found the back of the net after just four minutes of play in the principality with a sublime chipped effort.

However, Andrea Raggi promptly equalised for the hosts, who then set up a grandstand finish when Elderson Echiejile netted with just a quarter of an hour remaining. Valencia, though, held firm to take their place in Thursday's draw for the group stage at the expense of one of last season's quarter-finalists.

Nuno's side had finished the stronger of the two in last week's first leg at Mestalla, with Sofiane Feghouli giving the Liga outfit a 3-1 advantage with his 86th-minute strike.

Valencia effectively picked up where they had left off in Spain, dominating from the very first whistle at the Stade Louis II. Indeed, Danijel Subasic has already made one sensational save with his feet to keep out Shkodran Mustafi's close-range header from a corner by the time Valencia broke the deadlock just four minutes in.

Monaco only had themselves to blame, or more accurately, Fabinho, who blindly passed the ball straight to Negredo. However, what followed was utterly sublime, with the former Manchester City striker advancing into the area before catching Subasic completely by surprise by dinking the ball over him with a wonderfully disguised swing of his left foot.

Negredo could - and perhaps should - have struck again moments later when Rodrigo found him unmarked in the area but this time the Spain international fired wastefully over the bar.

A second Valencia goal would have well and truly killed the tie as a contest but, as it was, Monaco gave themselves a lifeline when Raggi turned smartly in the area and found the bottom right corner with a low strike, after Mathew Ryan had failed dismally to claim a cross.

The equaliser unsurprisingly lifted Monaco, who took the game to their visitors for the remainder of the half, but Valencia continued to a threat at set-pieces, with Dani Parejo heading wide from a corner when the captain really should have scored.

Needing two goals just to force extra-time, Monaco continued to press after the interval - but to little effect, with Valencia coping comfortably with everything that Leonardo Jardim's men could throw at them. However, with just 15 minutes remaining, the home side were once again gifted a lifeline by Ryan.

The Australian goalkeeper failed to deal with an in-swinging free kick from wide on the left winning, succeeding in only palming the cross in the direction of the onrushing Guido Carrillo, with the ball then dropping fortuitously at the feet of Elderson, who lashed it home at the back post.

Monaco poured forward in the closing stages but Ryan went some way towards atoning for his earlier errors by keeping out an awkwardly bouncing, long-range effort from Thomas Lemar to see Valencia through and make Spain the first country ever to have five representatives in the Champions League group stage.

Malmo 2-0 Celtic (agg 4-3): Deila's men dumped out at play-off stage

Celtic were knocked out of the Champions League at the qualification stages on Tuesday evening as a Markus Rosenberg strike and a Dedryck Boyata own goal gave Malmo a comfortable 2-0 win at Swedbank Stadion.

The result handed Age Hareide's team a 4-3 aggregate victory - a reward for the attacking intent they showed throughout the tie.

Experienced striker Rosenberg handed them a first-half advantage before Nir Bitton had a goal harshly ruled out for Celtic on the stroke of half time.

Further set-piece frailties undermined Ronny Deila's men as Boyata put through his own goal after the interval.

It was a particularly sweet triumph for Malmo, after a tetchy war of words between the two camps dominated the pre-match build-up, and one lapped up by a raucous Swedbank Stadion crowd.

For Celtic, they fall short at the final hurdle for the second season in succession having lost to Maribor last term, and the wait goes on for a return to the competition proper at Celtic Park.

Jo Inge Berget netted a vital brace for Malmo in the first leg and looked to pile further misery on his former employers when he lashed wide from 18 yards in the third minute.

Malmo goalkeeper Johan Wiland got an important touch on a lofted ball from the right, causing Virgil van Dijk to head wide and the Dutch defender would rue that miss in the 23rd minute.

Having battled to win a corner, Rosenberg rose unchallenged in front of keeper Craig Gordon to divert in Yoshimar Yotun’s inswinger.

Leigh Griffiths was a touch fortunate to only be booked after tangling with Malmo defender Anton Tinnerholm and Celtic's frustrations were further increased when Bitton converted Stuart Armstrong's corner, only for the referee to award a free-kick in Malmo’s favour despite their defender Kari Arnason appearing to handle the ball.

Gordon stood firm to brilliantly thwart Nikola Djurdjic on the end of a Rosenberg backheel in the final minute of a pulsating half.

Malmo continued where they left off in the second period as Rosenberg flashed narrowly wide from Djurdjic’s cutback.

Celtic continued to press but fell further behind in the 54th minute - a particularly bitter pill for Gordon to swallow.

The goalkeeper made a magnificent double save, denying Vladimir Rodic on the angle and responding to Rosenberg's follow-up but, from the resulting corner, Felipe Carvalho got ahead of the Celtic defence at the near post again and Boyata could only turn into his own net on the line.

Celtic then needed to score twice and the urgency of their situation was summed up as Griffiths sliced over from a Stefan Johansen flick-on - their attacking becoming more fitful.

Delia's men battled gamely until the end but were left to rue their set-piece flimsiness as Malmo celebrated securing their place in the group stage.

Newcastle United 4-1 Northampton Town: Thauvin impresses on home debut

    florian-thauvin-cropped_1qgcgcy9m464i1sz7sxv31ydng.jpg

Florian Thauvin scored once and provided a hat-trick of assists on his first Newcastle United start as Steve McClaren's men booked a place in the League Cup third round with a 4-1 thrashing of Northampton Town.

The winger, signed from Marseille last week, turned in an impressive display on his home debut at a half-full St James' Park before departing to a standing ovation after 65 minutes, having played a starring role throughout.

Thauvin broke the deadlock with a neat finish and then set up Siem de Jong as Newcastle raced into a two-goal lead inside eight minutes.

A Marc Richards penalty two minutes later pegged the hosts back, but Thauvin-inspired Newcastle put the second-round tie to bed as Daryl Janmaat and Mike Williamson netted early in the second half.

McClaren spoke in June when he was unveiled as head coach about placing a renewed emphasis on winning silverware, and, although they were given a scare by League Two opposition, Newcastle safely overcame their first hurdle.

And, in Thauvin, the Premier League team possess an exciting talent, the 22-year-old making an instant impact to open the scoring in acrobatic fashion.

Massadio Haidara's cross from the left flank found Thauvin on the edge of the six-yard box and he got in front of his marker to divert a volley beyond Ryan Clarke.

It was 2-0 five minutes later when Thauvin turned provider for the first time in the evening, De Jong heading home the Frenchman's free-kick.

A rout looked on the cards, but Northampton pulled one back straight away from the spot after Cheick Tiote had been penalised for handling Rod McDonald's header. Richards stepped up to dispatch the resulting spot-kick straight down the middle.

Richards also steered a diving header just off target as the visitors threatened to level, while Newcastle's Ayoze Perez spurned two chances prior to half-time.

Yoan Gouffran rippled the side-netting four minutes into the second half before Thauvin and Janmaat combined to put the tie beyond doubt 11 minutes after the restart. Thauvin broke into the box and teed up the Dutchman, who swept low past Clarke.

Williamson headed home another Thauvin set-piece after 63 minutes, with McClaren taking no chances by substituting the youngster two minutes later as the Magpies saw out their win.
