:(Pedro: Valdes gave me Van Gaal warning prior to Man Utd snub

    pedro-chelsea_1uhr62cvcoq4a1scoo1ov0uy9s.jpg

Pedro has revealed his Spain team-mate Victor Valdes warned him of his "problem" of playing under Louis van Gaal at Manchester United before he joined Chelsea.

The winger was linked with a move to Old Trafford for much of the summer before Chelsea took advantage of their rivals' indecision by completing a late deal.

And while United goalkeeper Valdes spoke highly of the club and its supporters, Pedro admits he did not recommend life under Van Gaal.

"He told me it was a very good club with great supporters and the only problem was with the coach," Pedro told Marca.

Valdes has been left out of United's Champions League squad following the collapse of David de Gea's move to Real Madrid and Pedro believes his former Barcelona team-mate is being treated unfairly.

"It is true that I do not like the treatment of my [Spain] team-mates, especially Victor, who has been a reference for me and is a model professional," he added.

"I don't think it's fair, but that did not influence my decision [to join Chelsea].

"I just saw Man Utd wasn't convinced to take the step of signing me, they were delaying a lot and I needed a team with which to start the new season. Chelsea acted more decisively."

Manchester United paid 'the price of Suarez or Neymar' for Martial

    anthony-martial-monaco_1c73qmq1bs4k71bqvdg8akh2yo.jpg

Manchester United upped their bid for Anthony Martial from £21.6m to £57.6m as Tuesday's transfer deadline approached, according to Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev.

The Red Devils made Martial, 19, the most expensive teenage footballer in history when they sealed his big-money move on the lastl day of the summer transfer window.

The final sum does include bonuses - one of which, reportedly, is £7m if he scores 25 goals across his four-year contract - but Vasilyev says it is the kind of sum that is usually reserved for the likes of Barcelona forwards Luis Suarez and Neymar.

"It's true that the price for Martial is £57.6m but take into account this sum includes bonuses which are very realistic," he told The Sun.

"Initially Martial was not for sale, it was absolutely not planned. Since last week United started to make offers which we declined several times – £21.6m, £28.8m, £36m, even £50.4m with bonuses.

"On Sunday the player got such an offer that he couldn't have declined. He asked us to find a solution and on Monday morning Manchester United made an offer to Monaco which the club couldn't refuse.

"It's absolutely unique. It's the price of Luis Suarez or Neymar – the best players in the world.

"Right now English football is on a different financial level and if Manchester United decides to buy somebody, it's very hard to stop them."

Oxlade-Chamberlain: I can take Neville criticism

    alex-oxlade-chamberlain-arsenal_1l7uxb3mtd8p31qi3r0mznxske.jpg

Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain insists there is no rift between Gary Neville and the Arsenal members of the current England squad, despite the former Manchester United star's recent criticism of the club.

Neville, who now balances his media work with a role as part of Roy Hodgson's England coaching staff, recently branded Gunners boss Arsene Wenger's approach in the transfer market as naive and arrogant.

Some critics have suggested Neville could risk incurring the wrath of Arsenal players on England duty with his remarks, but Oxlade-Chamberlain says he agrees with most of what he has to say.

"He’s brilliant the way he explains things and I think he is very respectful when he says what teams need to do better and what players need to do better in a game.

"It’s credit to him because, obviously, it could be a tricky situation where he’s talking about our games on TV and then he comes to work with England. But he seems to manage to do it without any of us holding a grudge against him. He hasn’t upset me yet!

“I’ve recorded games before because I quite like to hear what Gary has to say. I do believe he knows what he’s talking about. If I’ve had a bad game, I know I’ve had a bad game and I don’t mind hearing it. I’ve had 15 years of hearing it from my dad! I’m the first one to have a go at myself and then it’s my dad, so if Gary wants to join in, then it’s fine."

Wenger responded to Neville's recent criticism by defending his approach in the transfer market, but Oxlade-Chamberlain refuted suggestions he could act as a peacemaker between the pair."I don’t need to act as a peacemaker, " he added.

"I have heard that our manager addressed what he said and I’m sure he addressed it in a very good way, but they are two people I highly respect and the only interaction I will have with Gary this week is about England and how we are going to beat San Marino and Switzerland, and what runs I need to make at the full backs. That’s all I’m concerned about.”Neville recently pulled Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere's headphones out of his ears on the pitch at Celtic Park prior to the Three Lions' clash with Scotland.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was asked for his thoughts on the coach's direct approach, but maintains he has the respect of the entire squad: "He can do those things to us and we respect it, but at the same time we might also say ‘no, I’m putting them back in. That’s not for me Gaz’!”

“He knows how to treat the lads and fits right into our group, almost as one of the boys but also as someone we look up to and respect. We listen to what he’s got to say."

Neymar not mature enough to lead Brazil, says Leonardo

    neymar-brazil-training-31082015_ex2svzy2rrpf1naxlwnsbd9f1.jpeg

Former Brazil international Leonardo says he doubts Neymar has the maturity required to be the leader of the national team.

The 23-year-old was appointed captain of Dunga's side in the aftermath of World Cup 2014, but was criticised for allowing his emotions to get the better of him at this summer's Copa America.

Neymar was sent off following the group stage defeat to Colombia after headbutting Jeison Murillo and was consequently handed a four-match ban, which ruled him out of the rest of the tournament.

Leonardo - who has previously been vocal in his criticism of the Barcelona forward - has now repeated his concerns over the player's temperament.

He told SporTV: "Neymar is a great player, but he doesn't have the maturity to lead Brazil and take the team by his hand."

Leonardo did, however, point to the former Santos star's improvement since leaving his homeland for Barcelona in the summer of 2013: "I criticised him a lot when he played in Brazil.

"He took the ball and only wanted to dribble with it and make the difference. Today, he can also play without the ball. I didn't think he could do that - it is a question of mentality.

"Previously he didn't take free-kicks. Now, he's a big threat from set-pieces. There are a multitude of things a great player can improve on."

Neymar scored 39 goals in 51 games in all competitions for Barca as they won a European and domestic treble under Luis Enrique.

:frown::baffled::no:Premier League moves could ruin De Bruyne, Firmino and Baba - Matthaus

    kevin-de-bruyne-wolfsburg_1bwpswyqm7z6r19gnqahixjchh.jpg

Kevin De Bruyne, Roberto Firmino and Baba Rahman have made mistakes in ditching the Bundesliga for the Premier League, according to Lothar Matthaus.

The trio made moves from Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim and Augsburg respectively this summer to join Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

And former Bayern Munich and Germany star Matthaus believes the players are not guaranteed vital playing time at their new teams, which could hinder their development.

"Their agents only see the numbers that are being offered from the Premier League clubs," he told Bild. "Take [Shinji] Kagawa for example, who joined Man United as a top player from Borussia Dortmund and failed in the end, they forget quickly.

"For their bank account, it's a big change in pay, but in sporting terms it doesn't pay off.

"Whether a player like Baba plays or not doesn't matter to Chelsea in the end. At Augsburg, Baba was a regular player, in Mourinho's team, he is just a number among many.

"So it doesn't only threaten Baba or Firmino's careers, but also De Bruyne's."

Bayern Munich reveal massive Muller bid

    karl-heinzrummenigge_1wdbxa8jy8o5s17yuvwq5fzrz5.jpg

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has revealed Thomas Muller was the subject of a massive transfer bid this summer.

The forward was continually linked with a move to Manchester United - where he would have been reunited with the Bundesliga champions' former boss Louis van Gaal - over the course of the transfer window.

Bayern have now admitted to receiving an incredible bid for the 25-year-old World Cup winner, but stopped short of confirming United were the interested party.Rummenigga told Suddeutsche Zeitung: "I'm talking about figures which were very high indeed. If I were a bank manager then I would have had to accept it.

"But as a football club we allowed ourselves to close the door on it and this door is remaining closed - I can promise that to everybody."One thing is for certain, in view of the increased television money in England things are not going to get any easier for Bayern in future."

According to Deloitte, the Premier League has broken the £1 billion mark for transfer spending in a single year for the first time in 2015.

With England's top tier spending a total of £870 million this summer, almost double the next highest (Serie A, £450m), Rummenigge wants the Bundesliga's TV rights deal to increase before they are left out of sight and has urged ARD - a consortium of public broadcasters in Germany - to challenge Sky to drive the price up over €1bn in Germany.

"The ARD has allowed itself to lose the qualification matches of the national team and the Olympic rights," the 59-year-old added."There is a competition called the Bundesliga and there is no reason not to create a contest called television, especially with pay TV."

Rummenigge also revealed how impressed he was with the level of investment in youth football in England following a recent visit to the country."I have taken a look at Manchester City's youth academy and all I can say is it doesn't get any better than that," he continued.

"I have also visited Tottenham's, Arsenal's and Chelsea's and it's the same wherever you go. I can tell you that the English are going all out in terms of youth development."

Rooney will become England's greatest goalscorer... but not their greatest player

Wayne Rooney stands on the verge of making history, with Saturday's European Championship qualifier away at San Marino providing him with the perfect chance to equal and even surpass Sir Bobby Charlton's international record of 49 goals.

In many ways, it would be fitting for Rooney break the record against such modest opposition but, if he failed to find the net in Serravalle, it would be a fair reflection of his fading star on the national scene.

Even if he scores the goals required to become England's greatest ever marksman, though, the completion of the task in such a fixture would paint a telling picture of the 29-year-old's true record at this level.

After bursting onto the scene during his teenage years, the Manchester United striker has racked up 48 goals in total but never reached the heights which seemed to be beckoned by his 18 months as an international footballer. At Euro 2004 he looked like a world-beater in the making but, as the same competition approaches 12 years on, many England fans feel that they have simply not seen the best of their captain.

While 48 goals in 105 caps seems like a reasonable return, a deeper investigation of those numbers takes much of the shine from Rooney's impending achievement.

Since that summer of 2004, in which Rooney scored doubles against Switzerland and Croatia before picking up a foot injury as England exited to hosts Portugal in the quarter-finals, the forward has scored a grand total of two goals in tournament football.

What's more, his 48 goals have largely come against international nobodies. Of the top 11 nations in the current Fifa world rankings, Rooney has scored against just two. His 2005 strike in a friendly against Argentina and goals in non-competitive home and away fixtures against Brazil in 2013 are the only occasions on which he has scored against the traditional powerhouses.

Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Chile, France et al have all negated Rooney's goal threat. Instead, the majority of his goals have come in nondescript internationals that have passed by most of the world.

The average ranking of the opponents against whom Rooney scores currently stands at 68.125. To put that into context, Bulgaria – a country who last graced a World Cup in 1998, have made only two European Championships since then and now sit fourth of six in their Euro 2016 group – are presently ranked 68 in the world.

Michael Owen netted a hat-trick in a crucial qualifier against Germany and scored five goals in major finals – including three in knockout matches. David Beckham rose to the occasion in key games against Greece, Argentina, Ecuador and Romania in World Cup football just when his side needed him. Gary Lineker's 48 international goals included 10 in World Cup finals.

While Charlton's achievement of having been part of England's only World Cup-winning side would always have been a steep task to match, Rooney has not even reached the heights of the likes of Owen, Beckham and Lineker in real terms.

"Rooney's a true great but there is a little way to go when you make comparisons as players," said 1966 hero Geoff Hurst when recently asked to judge the Three Lions skipper's record against Charlton's.

"Figure-wise, of course, if he goes above [Charlton] it's a great achievement, no question at all. The only thing I would say is, if you're making comparisons, Wayne is a front player, whereas Bobby Charlton scored 49 goals as a midfield player."

Four goals against San Marino, three against Kazakhstan and two against each of Andorra, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estonia and Montenegro help to inflate a record which gives a flattering view of Rooney's England spell and, while the same could be said of many players' records, he is lacking those vital big-game moments which make special careers.
Sven-Goran Eriksson, the man who gave Rooney his debut as a 17-year-old against Australia in 2003, left the England manager's post in 2006 with a memorable warning.

"Wayne Rooney is the golden boy of English football. Don't kill him because you will need him," pleaded the Swede. "He's a fantastic player and he has his temperament but you can't hold that against him."

But since his sending-off in Eriksson's final game – the penalty loss to Portugal at the World Cup in Germany – Rooney has seen red on only one occasion. It has not been his temperament that has undermined his England career but his big-game quality.

As his Manchester United career hits an uncertain spell in light of Louis van Gaal's decision to employ him as a centre-forward in a squad which offers few other options, so too does Rooney's international tenure appear to be lacking a certain something.

England look a shoo-in to reach the Euros in France but failure in the finals could spell the beginning of the end for Rooney and, while he is destined to be referred to for years to come as his country's greatest-ever scorer, nobody is more in need of a tournament to remember.

Another disappointment next summer and Rooney will have completed his evolution from potential world-beater to flat-track bully. His legacy needs more than that. England need more than that.

    'Messi will never leave Barcelona'

    1313672_heroa.jpg

Lionel Messi will never leave Barcelona, according to the club's sporting director Robert Fernandez.

The forward was linked with a move to Manchester City last season following a dispute with coach Luis Enrique.

However, after suffering a dip in form he returned to his brilliant best in the second half of the campaign as Barca won the treble for the second time in their history.

"Messi will play for the club for the rest of his life," said Fernandez.

"He has many years of football left in him. Other people think not, but he's so intelligent positionally and knows where to be on the field at the right time.

"As people get older they lose things but he's smart enough to keep producing extraordinary performances. He has that gift."

Fernandez also expanded on reports linking the club with a move for former Barca forward Nolito over the summer.

"I would pay whatever fee is necessary for any Barcelona player, but you have to analyse things as well.

"Nolito was 15 when Luis Enrique was at Celta and knows him well."

Verratti confident of making 'perfect' Pirlo partnership

    1871262_heroa.jpg

Marco Verratti believes that he and Andrea Pirlo can develop a strong partnership in the Italy midfield after starting together in Thursday's 1-0 win against Malta.

Azzurri coach Antionio Conte admitted that he was not sure if the pair could play in the same team heading into the crucial Euro 2016 qualifier, which they won thanks to a goal from Graziano Pelle.

Verratti, though, feels that they compliment each other well in the centre of the park and just need time to adapt to each other.

"Andrea and I are good together," he told reporters. "We have different tasks in the team. He sets the pace, I remain closer to the defence. Now we have to work to find the perfect partnership."

Meanwhile, Italy team-mate Eder was delighted to feature alongside the two midfielders.

"Playing with Pirlo and Verratti is fantastic," he said. "Just go through with the right timing and they put you through on goal."

Robben ruled out for four weeks with injury

    1871342_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has been ruled out for four weeks after suffering an injury while on international duty with Netherlands.

The winger limped off midway through the first half against Iceland and is now set for a month on the sidelines as he recovers.

Robben will now miss Bayern's opening two Champions League group games against Olympiakos and Dinamo Zagreb as well as the Bundesliga clash against last season's runners-up Wolfsburg on September 22.

He also faces a race against time to be fit to face Borussia Dortmund on October 4, though he will definitely miss Oranje's crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Turkey on Sunday.

The former Chelsea man has been replaced by Sunderland's Jeremain Lens for Sunday's match in Konya while new manager Danny Blind has also called up Southampton's Virgil van Dijk to replace the suspended Bruno Martins Indi.

Speaking of his injury on Thursday evening, Robben told NOS: I was super fit, but after a few knocks I felt it in my back. That went on to my groin and I couldnt go on with the match.

"Now I will go back to Munich and I will not be playing against Turkey."

Man Utd hit back AGAIN at Real Madrid in De Gea row

    1677382_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have hit back again at Real Madrid over David De Gea’s failed move by reiterating that the Spanish club are at fault.

Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed that United took eight hours to return contracts and felt a lack of “experience” resulted in De Gea’s proposed move collapsing on Monday evening.

Madrid have issued a lengthy statement supposedly detailing the events surrounding De Gea’s move, which would have seen Keylor Navas join Louis van Gaal’s side, but United have now refuted the allegations from Perez.

“The facts speak for themselves. The FA are prepared to back our case that documents were in on time,” a spokesman for United told The Telegraph.

“We all like to blame others but if you let one slip through your fingers into the back of the net, then ultimately the culpability is yours."

Georgia 1-0 Scotland: Strachan's side beaten in vital qualification clash

    1875312_heroa.jpg

Valeri Kazaishvili scored a decisive first-half goal to dent Scotland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2016 as Georgia ran out 1-0 winners in Tbilisi.

A scrappy game was settled eight minutes before half-time, when Kazaishvili drilled a low shot past Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall to give his nation a rare international victory.

Defeat had a sense of deja vu about it for Scotland, whose bid to reach Euro 2008 was effectively ended by a 2-0 reverse at the Boris Paichadzis Erovnuli Stadium, and Gordon Strachan's men face an uphill struggle to finish in the top three of Group D.

The result hands the Republic of Ireland the chance to leapfrog Scotland into third should they win at Gibraltar later on Friday.

Strachan's side were largely restricted to half chances on a hot night in Tbilisi, failing to score for the first time in 13 international matches, meaning the prospect of facing Germany at Hampden Park on Monday will now feel all the more daunting.

Georgia had lost their previous three home qualifiers and were without a win under coach Kakhaber Tskhadadze, who took over from Temuri Ketsbaia in December, but a vociferous crowd roared them to only their second three points of a dismal campaign.

Despite the heat in Tbilisi, which had reached 32 degrees Celsius just a few hours earlier, both sides raced into attack in the opening minutes, with Andy Robertson and Alan Hutton finding plenty of space down either flank for Scotland.

Scotland were content to let Georgia enjoy long spells of possession that posed little threat, and their patience almost paid off when Steven Fletcher was inches away from converting a dangerous low cross from Robertson, but he slid in just too late to connect and the ball ran out of play.

Marshall had barely touched the ball when a header from inside the penalty area by Levan Mchedlidze found Kazaishvili on the edge of the box, and the Vitesse midfielder took a perfect touch to tee himself up for a well-struck low drive into the bottom corner.

Jano Ananidze tested Marshall again just after the break, clipping a shot towards goal from close range after a well-worked corner, but the Cardiff goalkeeper was alert to the danger.

Steven Naismith had a golden chance to equalise when Shaun Maloney's corner reached him on the goal line, but he fouled Nukri Revishvili in his attempt to score and conceded a free-kick.

Scotland attacked with real intent as they probed for an opening, but Davit Kvirkvelia denied Ikechi Anya with a smart challenge as the Watford winger jinked into the box.

Maloney, who was part of the Scotland team that lost in Tbilisi in 2007, started to show his quality and his precise through ball carved an opening for Fletcher, but the striker was caught offside as his shot struck a post.

Mchedlidze almost made it 2-0 with a run and cracking shot from 20 yards, but Marshall spared Scotland further misery with a superb one-handed save.

Scotland pressed in the final minutes and were within a yard of a crucial equaliser when James Morrison met Charlie Mulgrew's corner with a header that flashed wide, but some desperate Georgia defending prevented further chances in a nail-biting climax and Strachan's side failed to register a shot on target.

Rooney expects Martial to be United success

    wayne-rooney-champions-league-club-brugge-v-manchester-united-260815_ywubckrwg9zp1vy2b73nz2x3q.jpg

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has backed new signing Anthony Martial to be a success following his move from Ligue 1 side Monaco.

The 19-year-old became the world's most expensive teenager after United agreed to sign the forward for an initial fee of £36 million, possibly rising to £58m depending on performance bonuses.Rooney admits he was forced to ask French teammate Morgan Schneiderlin for more information on the youngster following the deadline day move but believes Martial has the talent to prosper at Old Trafford.

"It's been well documented I haven't seen that much of him to be honest, so I can't really say too much on him," the United captain confessed."I saw him last season against Arsenal where he had a fantastic game, so hopefully he'll be a great signing for us.

"He's got a lot of ability from what I've seen and I'm sure he'll be a good player for us."
