De Bruyne: Silva will make me better

    kevin-de-bruyne-sergio-aguero-manchester-city-west-ham-premier-league-19092015_1pwlj7xigk2mo1omoe3geqlse7.jpg

Manchester City's big-money recruit Kevin De Bruyne believes fellow playmaker David Silva can help him become better.

De Bruyne was crowned the Bundesliga Player of the Year last season, after having a hand in 31 goals across 34 appearances in 2014-15.

But the 24-year-old attacker, who scored his first goal in City's shock 2-1 loss at home to West Ham on Saturday, feels he can take his game to another level alongside Spain international Silva.

"Obviously David is a very good player and very important for this team," De Bruyne told reporters.

"I can only get better if I play with great players. This team has a lot of great players.

"It's a little bit different than it was, I think when I know the team a bit better I will get even more of the ball."

De Bruyne added: "I am adapting well to the team.

"It is just the beginning so I don't feel any pressure. I just try to play my game."

    Pardew demands more from Zaha

    wilfried-zaha-cropped_lhtemofnue1w1lul5q2ygpugs.jpg

Crystal Palace coach Alan Pardew has revealed his frustration at Wilfried Zaha's inability to display his talent on a consistent basis.

Pardew withdrew Zaha at half-time in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham following an ineffectual first-half display.

The twice-capped England international returned to Selhurst Park on a permanent basis last February after a transfer to Manchester United failed to work out.

And with the 22-year-old failing to complete the 90 minutes for the fifth time in six Premier League starts this season at White Hart Lane, Pardew has called on him to knuckle down.

"I didn't think Wilfried played well so I took him off," Pardew said in his post-match press conference.

"The issue with Wilfried is that he's a fabulous footballer, and I'm trying to get him to understand that every game is very important.

"It's about concentration and having that same desire to defend, to attack, for movement and everything that a top player produces, and unfortunately today [Sunday] I don't think he did that.

"He had 45 minutes to show me that he was up to speed in those areas and he wasn't, so therefore he needs to take that as a lesson.

"He's not the first player who didn't do their job."

    Mourinho: Terry will return...against Walsall

    johnterry-cropped_1wrqy26lhpmjx181v9fk9jpznb.jpg

John Terry will make his return to the Chelsea line-up for their League Cup tie against Walsall on Wednesday, manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

The club captain was left out of the team for the Champions League win over Maccabi Tel Aviv and the controversial Premier League triumph over rivals Arsenal on Saturday.

Terry started every game for Mourinho in the league last season but for now will have to settle for a low-key cup tie in his bid for playing time.Mourinho also stated Diego Costa will drop down to the bench for the game at Walsall, meaning Radamel Falcao will play from the start.

"Yes, I will play Falcao - Diego goes on the bench," the Portuguese boss told reporters. When asked whether Terry would play, he added: "Sure, of course."

Chelsea started the season in poor fashion, winning just once in five games, but back-to-back triumphs without Terry have raised questions as to whether to centre-back's first-team future is in doubt.

Van Persie unhappy after being left out by Fenerbahce

    van-persie-fenerbahce_vr5tmxesvp0i1kpktoser7uq8.jpg

Robin van Persie was unhappy at being left out of the Fenerbahce team despite coming off the substitutes' bench to score the winning goal against Bursaspor on Sunday.

The former Arsenal and Manchester United striker was not named in Vitor Pereira's starting XI and was only brought on after 77 minutes with the scores level after Tomas Necid had cancelled out Nani's opener.

Van Persie made an immediate impact, scoring within three minutes of his arrival to seal a 2-1 victory for Fener, who sit top of the Super Lig with 13 points from five games.

The 32-year-old was not thrilled after the match, though, insisting he wants to be starting matches and playing for the full 90 minutes.

"To be honest, I am not very happy at this moment," he told Lig TV .

"I was not happy that I started on the bench. I am fully fit, physically very well and able to play for 90 minutes.

"The only right answer I could give was with what I did: helping the team to get the victory."

Pereira defended his decision to leave star striker Van Persie out of the team when he was asked about the Dutchman's complaints after the match.

"I would play more players if we were allowed to play 22 or 25 players," he said at his press conference.

"The players can like or not like what I do, but I must take decisions. I am happy with Van Persie's performance after being brought on to the pitch.

"It would be bad if he wasn't unhappy about being a substitute. This proves that he wants to play."

Van Persie has three goals from nine appearances - five of which were starts - for his new side so far in 2015-16.

Berahino felt like Zidane - Fletcher

    saidoberahino-cropped_iwpl49xfyhra111oeufr8dml7.jpg

West Brom forward Saido Berahino compared his derby winner to Zinedine Zidane, captain Darren Fletcher has revealed.

Berahino was embroiled in a transfer saga as he pushed for a move away from The Hawthorns, but the England Under 21 international went from villain to hero as his skilful first-half goal sealed a 1-0 win over local rivals Aston Villa on Saturday.

The 22-year-old, who held clear-the-air talks with manager Tony Pulis and his team-mates before game, popped up inside the penalty area to deflect James Morrison's drive past Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan six minutes before the interval.

Berahino did not play down his exploits following the match, with Fletcher revealing: "He did divert it for the goal. His words were it's a 'Zidane touch' and 'It was like Zidane', he felt that he meant it - you can tell he doesn't lack confidence.

"I thought he was fantastic and he's a great player and we want him to be a great player for West Bromwich Albion, while he's here.

"It's great he has ambition. I love that he has that and wants to play at the highest level. I think he'll score goals for England in the future and that's how highly I rate him."

Fletcher added: "He's well liked in the dressing room and we wanted to make that perfectly clear.

"That wasn't forced, that was natural reactions because of how highly we think of him."

Monchengladbach should replace Favre with Klopp - Vogts

    jurgen-klopp-borussia-dortmund-vfl-wolfsburg-dfb-pokal-30052015_qeof6fm36tdf1egs5639aorvs.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach should appoint former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp to replace Lucien Favre, according to club icon Berti Vogts.

Favre resigned on Sunday after the Bundesliga side's poor start to the 2015-16 campaign left them rock bottom of the table without a point from five games.

Gladbach also suffered a defeat to Sevilla in their opening Champions League game after impressively finishing third behind Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg last season.

The search is now on for a new head coach and former Scotland manager Vogts, who won five titles while playing for the club between 1965 and 1979, believes Klopp is the ideal man.

"My advice would be to get Jurgen Klopp," Vogts told Aktuelle Nachrichten .

"Borussia is a team you can push to the top. You just need to wake them up and Jurgen Klopp would be perfect for that."

Gladbach are in action without the leadership of Favre for the first time since February 2011 when they host Augsburg in the Bundesliga on Wednesday.

Van Gaal warns Man City: Man Utd made title statement

    anthony-martial-memphis-depay-manchester-united-southampton-premier-leage-20092015_i6mivsu19qw91mfyr5zurzowh.jpg

Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United's win at Southampton has sent a statement of title intent to table toppers and local rivals Manchester City.

Anthony Martial scored a double on his first Premier League start and Juan Mata scored what proved to be the winner in the 3-2 triumph, with Graziano Pelle's brace failing to dent the visitors.

Van Gaal's team rose to second in the table with the win – just two points behind leaders Man City – and the Dutch coach is confident that his players have the potential to finish as champions in 2015-16.

"It's a fantastic result away at Southampton and I think we have made a statement that we shall compete for the title," he told Sky Sports News.

"What I am saying all the time is that we have to improve. We have to improve our team and when we improve our team...last season we were fourth so maybe we can be third now.

"But last year we were close enough to be the champions. I have said that we were very close last year. When you remember the match against Chelsea away, it was very close but we did not score at the time.

"Scoring is the most important thing, you have seen that today, Southampton could have scored to go 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes but they didn’t do it and then we scored. We were the better team after that."

Next up for the Red Devils is a third round League Cup home tie against Ipswich Town on Wednesday before another Old Trafford tie in the Premier League against rock-bottom Sunderland.

Klopp ruled out of Monchengladbach job by agent

    jurgen-klopp-borussia-dortmund-werder-bremen_1pp33f71bl0yf104o8trv3rn4v.jpg

Jurgen Klopp's agent has ruled the former Borussia Dortmund coach out of the running for the vacant post at Borussia Monchengladbach .

Despite qualifying for the Champions League last term, Monchengladbach have endured a horrendous start this season and a fifth loss from as many Bundesliga matches against local rivals Cologne on Saturday persuaded coach Lucien Favre to step down.

Klopp has been out of work since May when he ended a highly regarded spell in charge of Dortmund, the highlight of which was back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12 as well as a Champions League final appearance in 2013.

But the 48-year-old's representative Marc Kosicke told Bild that the latest German top-flight vacancy does not interest his client.

"Jurgen won't become new coach of Borussia Monchengladbach," Kosicke said.

Kosicke's announcement seemingly takes Berti Vogts' preferred option off the table after the Monchengladbach club icon having called for Klopp to be handed the reins at Borussia-Park earlier on Monday.

Bellerin: Leaving Barcelona for Arsenal has paid off

    hector-bellerin_b07vbr44dps716mr8yd9y1qlm.jpg

Hector Bellerin is delighted his decision to leave Barcelona and join Arsenal has paid off as he continues to enjoy a run as first-choice right back at the Emirates Stadium.

The Spain under-21 international left Camp Nou for London as a 16-year-old in 2011 and signed a new long-term contract in the close-season after making his first-team breakthrough last year.

Bellerin, 20, has been preferred to fit-again Mathieu Debuchy in defence by manager Arsene Wenger, starting five of his team's six Premier League games in 2015-16.

The Catalan spoke fondly of his time learning the game with Barca but is thrilled with his decision to leave the European champions and is eager to stay with the Gunners for the long haul.

"It has paid off," Bellerin told Sky Sports when asked about his move. "I am very happy with the decision I made.

"Barcelona is an academy where you are taught to play the Barcelona way, all the players can play the ball well.

"It is all the same philosophy since you are young to playing in the first team - that is very important.

"It was hard [to leave], but I always say the train comes just once and you either take it or you do not.

"I took it and I am very happy with the opportunity Arsenal have given me and very happy to be in the position I am in today.

"I have always said the reason I came to Arsenal is because I want to stay here and I am not thinking about going anywhere else."

Guardiola: Wolfsburg can challenge Bayern Munich

    pep-guardiola-bayern-munich_c3zls5zqexgi12ie0w9jxmp4t.jpg

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola views Wolfsburg as a credible challenger to his club's recent dominance of German football.

The two sides meet at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, with Wolfsburg having finished second behind Bayern in the Bundesliga last year before beating the same opponents on penalties in last month's DFL Super Cup.

Dieter Hecking's men head into the eagerly anticipated clash four points shy of Bayern, who are level on points with Borussia Dortmund at the summit on the back of five wins from their opening five league games.

"Wolfsburg have invested a lot recently. People wanted a competitor for Bayern and not just they are there," Guardiola told a press conference, before listing Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke alongside Wolfsburg and Dortmund as title contenders.

"We know [Wolfsburg's] quality and their style of play. But, as usual, it's all about the three points."

Guardiola, who confirmed that striker Robert Lewandowski will be available once more after recovering from an ankle problem, is also looking forward to a reunion with Dante.

The Brazilian defender joined Wolfsburg from Bayern in August having lost his starting spot at the Allianz Arena.

"I want my players to be happy," Guardiola added, reflecting on Dante's desire to leave.

"I would also be satisfied if he had stayed because he helped me a lot."

'If Spain splits, Barcelona would leave La Liga'

    1956272_heroa.jpg

LFP president Javier Tebas has said that Barcelona and Espanyol would be unable to play in La Liga if Catalunya becomes independent from Spain.

Parliamentary elections take place in the region on Sunday and the independence process is top of the agenda for many voters.

Former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is a staunch supporter of the campaign for secession from Spain, while players such as Xavi and Gerard Pique believe Catalans should be allowed to vote in a referendum on the matter.

Meanwhile, many Catalan figures have claimed Barca would continue in La Liga even if the region becomes independent, but Tebas tweeted on Monday: "If Spain splits, so too does La Liga. Let's hope we never reach that absurd situation."

Spain's sports minister Miguel Cardenal has previously said that Barcelona would be unable to continue in La Liga if Catalunya becomes independent from Spain.

"FC Barcelona would be unable to carry on competing in the Spanish league," he said last week. "It's absurd to think that if Catalunya becomes independent, the club could ask to be registered by the Spanish federation."

Interviewed during Barca's 4-1 win over Levante by Canal Plus on Sunday, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the Blaugrana would have no involvement in politics ahead of the elections.

"We have always spoken about sport," he said. "We will not campaign. I understand that politicians have to do it, but Barca will show we are neutral."

Bartra: I'll get more Barcelona chances this season

    marcbartraneymar-cropped_jr0vbwdaqk9c12xd0sdh5356l.jpg

Barcelona defender Marc Bartra is confident he will gain further first-team opportunities after marking his maiden league start of the season with a goal.

Bartra opened the scoring in Sunday's 4-1 win over Levante at Camp Nou and has faith that coach Luis Enrique will give him a fair chance to push his claims.

"If you work hard, you get opportunities," the 24-year-old told Barcelona's official website.

"I just think about training, improving and giving the team everything I have."

On his fifth senior goal in Barca colours, Bartra added: "What I like is to steal balls and do everything related to defence, but if I score a goal obviously that's also good. The most important thing is to help the team.

"Leo Messi put the ball right on my chest. Passes like that make it easier.

"Scoring when the team needs you, that's the best."

With Barcelona 3-0 to the good after the hour, Luis Enrique handed a first-team debut to Gerard Gambau as a replacement for Sergio Busquets.

The midfielder, who has been playing with Barcelona B since joining from Girona last August, was delighted to make his Camp Nou debut and cites Spain international Busquets as a major influence.

"Camp Nou is impressive. I was on the bench against Malaga and I'm very happy with my debut in La Liga against Levante," Gambau told the club website.

"It seems impossible that in one year I've debuted with the first team. Most importantly, you have to take it in and keep your feet on the ground.

"Sergio Busquets is a reference for me. Whenever I'm on the bench or at home I watch him so I know what to do when I'm out there.

"In the first half Levante were back on defence, but in the second half we were able to put the game away. The team has shown that, despite the injuries, it knows how to play.

"I don't have any goals, just to keep working hard. My spot is with Barca B and I just want to take advantage of my opportunities in the first team."

Costa & Gabriel face FA charges

    mike-dean-diego-costa-chelsea_1krwjkrqhwn6715ku9ycg70ebj.jpg

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has been charged by the Football Association for "an alleged act of violent conduct" during the Blues' win over Arsenal on Saturday.
The 26-year-old was involved in a spat with Gunners defender Gabriel, which saw the defender sent off for kicking out at the Spain international.

Costa continued his physical approach and was perhaps fortunate to remain on the pitch following further clashes with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Laurent Koscielny.

However, he now faces retrospective punishment for his altercation with Koscielny, which saw him strike the centre-back in the face, and has until 6pm on September 22 to reply.Arsenal defender Gabriel - who was sent off for kicking out at Costa - has also been charged with improper conduct, while team-mate Santi Cazorla has been warned following his red card.

Both clubs have been charged for failing to control their players under FA rule E20 and, along with Gabriel, must respond to the charge by 6pm on Thursday September 24.

Napoli for the title? That's ridiculous! - Sarri

    gonzalohiguain-cropped_5y4tbkrcbucu13xaqntc6682j.jpg

Maurizio Sarri has immediately dismissed talk of Napoli challenging for the Serie A title this season despite Sunday's 5-0 win over Lazio.

Gonzalo Higuain scored twice as Napoli recorded a thoroughly deserved win over a side which finished third last season, picking up their first league victory of the season.

Sarri remained grounded after the triumph and insisted hopes of a Scudetto push were unrealistic.

"I know the word Scudetto gets bandied about easily around the Stadio San Paolo," he told Mediaset Premium. "But it seems ridiculous to be saying that now.

"I don't think all the problems we had have suddenly been solved even though we are improving - the team has grown in confidence and is fitter than before.

"We did well and approached the game the right way. We immediately pinned back our opponents and when we got to 2-0 up it was easier, especially as Lazio were coming back from a match in Ukraine on Thursday."

Sarri also pointed to the success of his 4-3-3 formation, which produced the second 5-0 win in the space of a week after the same result was achieved against Club Brugge in the Europa League - a successful switch from the team's previous 4-3-1-2 shape.

"Defensively the 4-3-3 gives us something more," explained the former Empoli boss. "We will practice both systems in training, but clearly if this one continues to provide these performances, we won't change it again.

"We never changed our idea of football, we just changed a few starting positions. Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens work better in this formation."

The 56-year-old was again asked to respond to club legend Diego Maradona, who claimed Napoli would not win trophies with him at the helm.

Sarri gave a similar response to the one he had given earlier in the week, saying: "Maradona can think and say whatever he likes. He is and remains my idol."

Napoli travel to play struggling Carpi in their next Serie A clash on Wednesday.

    Mihajlovic praises 'exemplary' Balotelli

    mariobalotelli-cropped_1e9o7icv1qo4e1ipg2n7sltkcg.jpg

Mario Balotelli could be in line for his first AC Milan start since returning to San Siro against Udinese after impressing Sinisa Mihajlovic with his disciplined approach. The striker left Milan for Liverpool in 2014 but returned to San Siro in late August after struggling to make an impact during a disappointing 12 months at Anfield.

Balotelli's first appearance after making the season-long loan switch came in the derby with Inter – a game Milan lost 1-0 – and he played the final 20 minutes of Saturday's 3-2 win over Palermo.

But he may now get the chance to make an impression from the start against Udinese on Tuesday."I knew Balotelli when he was 17 [at Inter], and I'm back with him at 25, I don't know how he behaved in the meantime," said the Serbian coach.

"Now he's behaving in an exemplary way. I always try to encourage him to train at his best.

"Could he start tomorrow? I've still not decided, let's see how the lads are tomorrow morning, and who has the right feeling to play."Whoever earns a starting spot will be expected to produce an attacking display at Stadio Friuli, with Mihajlovic keen to take advantage of Udinese's early season struggles.

He added: "We will have to impose our game. I have a lot of respect for Udinese and their coach Stefano Colantuono, but at the moment they are under a bit of pressure.

"If we play like we know how, by repeating our past two performances, we will make it hard for them. "It's important that we have an attacking approach, but we cannot ignore our defensive duties."

Juventus without Mandzukic for three weeks

    mariomandzukic-cropped_rvc5yupzi2er1ps4n0pqrv3uv.jpg

Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic is facing three weeks on the sidelines due to a torn thigh muscle.

The Croatia international was substituted during the closing stages of Sunday's 2-0 Serie A win at Genoa and tests revealed he has suffered a grade-one tear of his right femoral bicep according to the club's official website, which says the forward will be absent for 20 days.

Mandzukic will miss Wednesday night's league match against Frosinone and this weekend's trip to Napoli.

The 29-year-old was on target when Juve beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Champions League last week, but he will miss their next outing in the competition against Sevilla.

Juventus host Bologna before the October round of international fixtures, where Mandzukic will also be considered a doubt for his country's Euro 2016 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Malta.

Bianoconeri coach Massimiliano Allegri has a striker shortage on his hands at the Bianconeri, with Alvaro Morata having also sustained an injury at Genoa.

The Spain international departed during the first half due to an abdominal muscle complaint that is being assessed by the club’s medical staff, making him a major doubt for the Frosinone match.

    Blanc: Ibrahimovic will end drought

    zlatanibrahimovic-cropped_jf5vnt7jkp7w1wa8p1011f11i.jpg

Laurent Blanc has no concerns over the form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic even though his star striker has failed to score for Paris Saint-Germain so far this season.

Ibrahimovic has helped fire the club to three successive Ligue 1 titles and scored 106 goals in 129 appearances in all competitions before the start of this campaign.
However, the Sweden captain has not scored in his first four games in 2015-16 and missed a glorious chance in PSG's 1-1 draw with Reims on Saturday.

But, speaking on Monday, coach Blanc said: "Ibrahimovic is not in the best possible form. He is finding it more difficult to score goals than usual [this season].
"It happened last year too, but I think he will recover quickly.

"[Is he] in decline? You will have an answer soon. He will give you an answer on the pitch. And that's what matters most."Ibrahimovic's next opportunity to break his duck will come in Tuesday's home clash with Guingamp.

Blanc added: "We are disappointed with the game against Reims, unfortunately we will get matches like this again. We can't go all season at the top level."We must improve our efficiency, especially in attack. We created chances but were not effective.

"We will try to put a very competitive team [out against Guingamp] because you have to win games like these."
