Bale and James nearing Real Madrid return, says Benitez

    gareth-bale_ezevnw13gw961h41jhm5y7tk3.jpg

Real Madrid coach Rafael Benitez says that Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez are on schedule to make their return from injury in the derby against Atletico Madrid on October 4.

Bale has not featured for Madrid since picking up a muscular problem in their 4-0 Champions League win against Shakhtar Donetsk earlier in September, while James has been sidelined since the 5-0 victory over Betis back in August.

The duo will not feature against Malaga on Saturday or versus Malmo in midweek but could make their comeback at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

"Bale and James will return to training with the group next week," Benitez told reporters.

"They are both recovering well. If things go well next week, they could play again against Atletico Madrid."

The absence of Bale and James has seen Karim Benzema step into the limelight, with the Frenchman scoring five goals in four league appearances, and Benitez has nothing but praise for the prolific forward.

"Benzema can score, assist and make great runs," he enthused. "He is a sensational player for us."

Martial has been lucky, says Van Gaal

    anthony-martial-cropped_xjddndv1czh21lnhxwupi8i7v.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says Anthony Martial has had a "little bit of luck" in his first few weeks at Old Trafford.

The 19-year-old has netted four goals in four appearances in all competitions since joining United from Monaco on deadline day of the summer transfer window.

He has also been compared to France legend Thierry Henry for his calmness in front of goal, though Van Gaal believes good fortune has played a part in his fine start."It is a little bit of luck, but of course the main thing is his quality," Van Gaal stated at a press conference.

"As a player, he has to do it and he has to cope with the pressure. What we have seen until now, he can do it."His personality is that he is an open guy, he is listening, he is watching, he is focusing on the matches. For a manager, he is a very coachable player – that is also why I bought him."

The arrival of Martial has limited James Wilson's opportunities at Old Trafford and Van Gaal has admitted the young striker could be allowed to leave on a temporary basis in order to get more playing time."We will wait until December to review Wilson's situation," the Dutchman added. "We might decide to loan him out."

The England Under-21 international scored once in 13 Premier League appearances last term, but has yet to feature for the first team in 2015-16.

Rotation vital to Atletico title hopes, claims Simeone

    diegosimeone-cropped_150ghpp1j175u1my9tkfb5ayf9.jpg

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone will continue to rotate his squad in La Liga this term as he seeks to once again challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title.

Simeone's new-look Atleti have made a promising start to the season, taking 12 points from five games while kicking off their Champions League campaign with victory over Galatasaray.

And Simeone believes making changes will keep his players fresh for a sustained title challenge.

"We explained it in pre-season. The physical coaches look at the whole year, not individual matches," he told reporters.

"We don't listen to those who say they aren't playing much. It makes them play better, the group is more competitive.

"Rotating is the only way of challenging Madrid and Barcelona. Players need to realise that 20 minutes are a whole lifetime and we know that five minutes is a long time [referring to the Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in 2014]."

The likes of Fernando Torres, Antoine Griezmann and Jackson Martinez have all been handed opportunities to impress Simeone this season, alongside Luciano Vietto and Angel Correa.

Griezmann has perhaps shone the brightest , scoring five times in all competitions, and Simeone added: "All the strikers look good.

"They are competing fairly between them in order to help the team. In Seville, Torres did well and then Jackson scored.

"In Eibar, Jackson had three chances and then Torres came on and scored. The winner is the team.

"I'm happy with both of them. Torres has won everything and Jackson did well in Portugal."

    Gabriel handed one-match suspension

    gabriel-paulista_15lqxfwamc9xl19ctligu6k4po.jpg

Arsenal defender Gabriel has been handed a one-match suspension by the Football Association for improper conduct following his dismissal against Chelsea on Saturday.

The centre-back was shown a red card after clashing with Diego Costa, with the Gunners star kicking out at the Spain international following a penalty box tussle.

Arsenal subsequently appealed the sending off, with the FA upholding the appeal, while Costa was slapped with a three-match suspension of his own.

Gabriel, though, has not escaped punishment and will miss the clash against Leicester after admitting to his charge, while he has also been fined £10,000.

"Following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, Arsenal defender Gabriel will serve a one-match suspension with immediate effect after he admitted an FA charge of improper conduct," read a statement on the FA's site.

"The charge relates to Gabriel’s behaviour following his dismissal in or around the 45th minute of the game against Chelsea on Saturday [19 September 2015].

"The player, who requested a personal hearing, was also fined £10,000 and warned as to his future conduct."

    Tuchel defends Dortmund rotation policy

Thomas Tuchel defended his squad rotation policy after Borussia Dortmund's 100 per cent start to the season was halted by the midweek draw at Hoffenheim.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ilkay Gundogan were left out of the starting line-up for Wednesday's game and watched as a hopelessly disjointed Dortmund struggled through the first half before grabbing a point thanks to Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang's 55th-minute equaliser.

Although it meant their winning streak ended at 12 games in all competitions, the former Mainz coach was not downbeat ahead of Sunday's home clash with Darmstadt.

"It was a good sign we were annoyed [about the draw], but we must not feel like losers, instead we have to find a good balance," said Tuchel, who defended his decision to rest two of his senior men for the trip to the Rhein-Neckar Arena.

"There is no other way – even if it sometimes takes time for it to work. The problems in Hoffenheim were not because of the team I picked.”

Despite his goal, Aubameyang is not yet at full fitness, according to Tuchel, who added: "His red light is not turned on yet. We often have to substitute him in the 70th minute. [But] he will definitely play on Sunday.”

Adnan Januzaj, on loan from Manchester United, could also start against the Bundesliga newcomers, but central defender Neven Subotic misses out through injury. Left-back Marcel Schmelzer will be assessed after training on Saturday.

:cool:Wilson signs new Manchester United deal

    jameswilson-cropped_135mu57hwl1x91o8jtnnbgasp7.jpg

Manchester United have announced striker James Wilson has signed a new contract until June 2019 with an option to extend for one additional season.

The 19-year-old’s previous deal was due to expire in 2017 and he has now committed his long-term future to the club he joined as a schoolboy.“I am delighted to have signed a new contract and look forward to playing a part in the team for many years to come,” Wilson said.

Wilson progressed through the United youth academy and made his first-team debut in April 2014 in a 3-1 win over Hull City, marking the occasion with two goals. He netted once in 13 Premier League appearances last season, but the arrival of Anthony Martial from Monaco has limited his opportunities this term.

United boss Louis van Gaal regards him as an important player for the future, however, and revealed his delight at his decision to stay at the club.

“He's one of England's brightest prospects. It's clear to see he has a fine future ahead of him,” the Dutchman stated. Van Gaal revealed earlier on Friday that United could allow Wilson to leave on loan towards the end of the calendar year, but only if it suits United’s interests.

“He is the natural successor of Martial, but he needs to play. However,Manchester United's interests are always higher than individual interests, so I have doubts about letting him go.“Maybe we will have to wait until December to see how it is with our club. Are we succeeding in the Champions League? In the Capital One Cup?

“Maybe he shall receive minutes off me because I have to rotate as I did against Ipswich Town and it can also be done in the other matches. I have talked with him and I think we’ll wait until December.”

We can compete with Manchester City - Pochettino

    mauriciopochettinocropped_zftkohnk4pko1xi28oh4zwbkz.jpg

Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes his side can bounce back from their derby defeat to Arsenal when they welcome Manchester City to White Hart Lane.

Spurs saw their hopes of League Cup glory ended in midweek when they suffered a 2-1 home loss at the hands of their arch rivals.

However, they are unbeaten in the Premier League since losing 1-0 on the opening day of the new season at Manchester United.

Now they host leaders City on Saturday lunchtime, with Pochettino confident they can stand toe-to-toe with their star-studded opponents.

"They have had a very good start. They are a very good team with great players," he told the club's website.

"It is a tough game. But, always in the Premier League it is very tough. Every team puts you in difficult situations.

"Our mentality is important. They do have great players, but we are a team who has quality players too.

"We can play face-to-face with them. Our mentality is that we can compete with them."

Pochettino also confirmed that, while they are all making good progress, Nabil Bentaleb, Mousa Dembele, Ryan Mason and Alex Pritchard remain on the sidelines.

"They are close, but still out," he added.

Wenger: I believed Monaco when they said Martial would stay

    anthony-martial-cropped_ywdfyhexx84100owhuq8gfxx.jpg

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he did not bid for Anthony Martial because he believed Monaco when they declared he would not be sold.

The 19-year-old went on to join Manchester United for a fee that could reach £58 million on transfer deadline day and has since scored four goals in as many games to kick off his career at Old Trafford.

Despite being criticised by Martial's agent Philippe Lamboley, Wenger has explained his reasoning for not launching an offer, insisting that he took the Ligue 1 club at their word.

"He was more a winger in his whole career and he played the final part of the season last year as striker," said the Gunners' manager.

"But Monaco's statement was always that the two players that would not move were Martial and [Layvin] Kurzawa, so I thought they would maintain that. But in the end both of them moved."

Wenger has been impressed by how quickly Martial has settled in England's top-flight, but does not expect him to continue scoring at such a rapid rate as the season progresses.

"It is a surprise because sometimes the start is difficult," he said.

"He needs to maintain that and it will be very difficult for him. You have to have some understanding if he starts to score less, because he has already set the expectation at a very high level.

"But I am not surprised he does well because he is a very talented player."

    Shaw positivity surprises Van Gaal

    lukeshaw-cropped_16vg8scf8maa218e6wy1i22jr6.jpg

Louis van Gaal has hailed Luke Shaw's positive attitude as the Manchester United defender starts his recovery from injury.

The left-back fractured his leg in the 2-1 Champions League defeat against PSV on September 15 and recently returned to Manchester after undergoing surgery in Netherlands.Shaw is now ready to take the next step in his rehabilitation and Van Gaal believes the England international's optimism will be key.

"He was very positive which is amazing for me. It's a very good signal," Van Gaal said at a press conference."We have started the rehabilitation. He shall be visited at home firstly for electro muscle stimulants."

United will also be without Marcus Rojo and Paddy McNair when they take on Sunderland on Saturday, but they do not have any fresh injuries after their League Cup win over Ipswich."We have the same three injuries – Rojo, Shaw and McNair," Van Gaal added."We have to wait and see how the others recover as there’s only two days between matches."

Van Gaal will meet compatriot Dick Advocaat when his men take on Sunderland, but even though he has sympathy for his fellow Dutchman, he has no intention of helping him to a first win of the season."I sympathise with him. I hope Sunderland win every game - apart from against us."

Barcelona blast Fifa response to Arda registration request

    ardan-turan-turkey_oaveqiqiq8pm1jqf9eqgq8gu9.jpg

Barcelona have criticised Fifa for failing to adequately respond to a request to register Turkey international Arda Turan, signed from Atletico Madrid in the recent transfer window.

The reigning Liga champions had been banned from registering new signings for failing to comply with rules on youth team players, but a lenghty lay-off for midfielder Rafinha prompted the club to request that the Spanish Football association (RFEF) contact Fifa on their behalf, with a view registering Arda.

The ban was thought to last until the January transfer window, but the club understood that the sanction ended following the closing of the pre-season transfer window in September.

If the sanctions ended in September as thought, the only obstacle to Barcelona register Arda or any other player would be the RFEF's registration windows, which open again in January.

But a clause within the RFEF's registration rulings permits clubs to register a player for emergency cover should a player become injured for a period of over five months.

With Rafinha set to be out for six months, Barcelona attempted to use this loophole to register Arda with the RFEF's consent, but the negative response they recieved from Fifa was deemed unsatisfactory

"FC Barcelona have today [Friday] received communication from Fifa regarding the proposed authorisation request to the RFEF to proceed with the registration of the player Arda Turan," a statement on the club's official website read.

"The communication sent by Fifa has not answered the petition raised by FC Barcelona, instead it merely expresses that in their opinion the RFEF is unable to register the player mentioned, because the RFEF’s rules "could conflict" with FIFA’s rules governing these situations.

FC Barcelona has therefore reiterated to football’s international body the need for precision in their response — be that an affirmative or a negative — because it was never FC Barcelona’s intention to request a legal opinion.

The club also indicated that they require a definitive answer from world football's governing body, with a possible appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in mind.

"What FC Barcelona requested was authorisation or, if negative, an appropriate denial," the statement continued.

"The latter would then allow the club to take the case to the CAS because the registration of players ban has already been completed in its entirety by the Club.

"The RFEF’s rules suggest, therefore, that a player can be registered.
