Gazidis defends Arsenal strategy: It is not an arms race!

2082852_heroa.jpg

"We know with certainty that we will not be able to beat our competition by getting in an arms race trying to outspend our rivals,
" Gazidis said. "It would be a waste of hard-earned resources.

"We’ve consistently added to our squad in recent seasons and invested record sums in doing so with unstinting support from [majority shareholder Stan] Kroenke and the board.

"We’ve been disciplined in our strategy of being talent-led, not money-led. We only sign players who will add to the squad, and not simply because we have money to spend. Our squad is deeper and stronger as a result of their efforts.

Allegri: Inter favourites in Serie A title race

    maxallegri-cropped_1mmun3b5xirco1fnneaiff2g5v.jpg

Massimiliano Allegri claims Sunday's Derby d'Italia will not be pivotal in keeping Juventus' Scudetto dreams alive despite their poor start to the 2015-16 campaign.

Serie A champions Juve have suffered a dreadful start to their quest for a fifth-straight title, taking just eight points from their seven games so far.

Allegri's team are therefore 10 points behind early leaders Fiorentina, and eight adrift of second-placed Inter, but the former AC Milan boss is calm ahead of this weekend's clash at San Siro.

"This is not going to be a knockout round, nor will it be decisive for the Scudetto," Allegri said. "But it is still the Derby d'Italia and will be a fantastic game to play in. We're certainly not lacking motivation.

"The plan is to be in the running for the title in March and reaching that period in the best form. The statistics do tell us we concede too many goals.

"At this moment the table tells us that Inter are favourites for the Scudetto, then Roma, Napoli, Milan and eventually Juve."

Allegri added that strike duo Mario Mandzukic and Paulo Dybala will face late fitness tests.

He continued: "Mario Mandzukic is in the squad and I'll evaluate his condition, as with Paulo Dybala.

"Having everyone at my disposal means I can allow some rest to those who have played more so far this season.

"There are some internationals who haven't fully recovered yet. Fortunately it's a long campaign, so everyone has time to get back to an acceptable level of fitness."

Mourinho turns on Wenger again after FA fine

    jose-mourinho-cropped_bja8y40aneib1d1tj7ynqkrlu.jpg

Jose Mourinho has once again turned his frustrations towards Arsene Wenger in the wake of his Football Association (FA) punishment.

The Chelsea manager was given a £50,000 fine and a one-match stadium ban, suspended for a year, after comments regarding officials being "afraid" to award his side penalties following the 3-1 defeat to Southampton.

Speaking to BBC's Football Focus, Mourinho has once more suggested Wenger gets priority treatment from the FA, pointing to an incident last season where the Arsenal boss pushed him on the touchlines and received no punishment.

"It's the FA's relationship towards me [that needs to change]," he said. "I think you, the media, should look at it. You should analyse what is happening with me, compare with other managers. It's the difference between afraid, naive, and weak, it's a £50,000 difference. The difference between a word and a push. You think it's comparable in the eyes of everyone?

"The next time I speak it'll be a stadium ban, then an electronic tag. I have to stay quiet and hope that all this journalism will bring to reality what is crystal clear."

Mourinho also slammed suggestions of a "mutiny" within the Chelsea playing squad.

He added: "The truth is that is a disgrace. An absolute disgrace. You don't need me to repeat what the players have been saying in the last couple of weeks.

"Every one of the players [on the international break] that had the chance to go to the press always had to be speaking about Chelsea."

The former Porto boss claimed on Friday that he would survive as Chelsea manager even with a mid-table finish this season, and he has urged supporters not to forget the success he has brought to the club.

"I lose one, I lose a few. If you ask me if in the next couple of years I won't win a title, I say impossible," Mourinho added.

"You think the champions of England are bad? The manager, the players, the club, the fans are bad? I know we're not playing the football of last season. It's an accumulation of factors. I'm not ready to discuss it.

"I know the way I would behave as a fan. If I were a fan I would think 'we won four Premier Leagues, three of them, the manager was this guy. The fourth was with a team that this guy made. So does he deserve our respect, our trust? Can we get someone better than him?'

"I know [Branislav] Ivanovic was not playing especially well but can we forget what he brought to this club, the happiness he brought, the player he is?

"I question my methods, and the answers are in my book. 22 titles in 15 years."

Ronaldo: Golden Shoe better than the Ballon d'Or

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_667suilh4y8y1efxmpp6h8k89.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has stressed it is no foregone conclusion that he will win the 2016 European Golden Shoe now that his biggest rival Lionel Messi is sidelined with a knee injury.

Ronaldo became the first player to win the prestigious individual award for a fourth time last season when he beat Messi and Sergio Aguero to the trophy.

Messi has already lifted the trophy on three occasions as well, though, and could equal Ronaldo if he becomes Europe's top scorer this campaign.

But the Portugal star is not getting complacent and has conceded that there is still plenty of competition.

"The competition for the Golden Shoe also comes from other leagues," Ronaldo told De Telegraaf.

"There are some fantastic strikers around in England and Germany. There are Wayne Rooney and Aguero in the Premier League and obviously Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga.

"But don't forget Karim Benzema here at Real Madrid and Luis Suarez at Barcelona. Benzema is playing very well this season and Suarez has already won the trophy once while at Liverpool.

"I really love this award. It is the best award out there for me. Others can pick you as the best player, but an attacker's job is to make goals and I love that. I cannot deny that I love scoring goals."

Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool: Klopp's first match ends in stalemate

    2091362_heroa.jpg

Jurgen Klopp had to settle for a point in his first Premier League game as Tottenham drew 0-0 with Liverpool at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Divock Origi - starting ahead of the injured Daniel Sturridge - headed a great chance against the crossbar from close range in the early stages after a strong start from Klopp's side, and that proved to be the best opportunity of the match.

After surviving that early scare, Spurs had the better chances with Clinton N'Jie forcing Simon Mignolet into an impressive diving save and Harry Kane also testing the Belgian goalkeeper before the break.

Klopp will be encouraged by a spirited display from his new team, but Liverpool have now only won one of their last 10 away Premier League fixtures and remain one point adrift of Spurs, who have still not tasted defeat since the opening day of the season.

Tottenham were without Eric Dier through suspension, but Danny Rose returned from injury at left-back. Origi made his first Premier League start of the season for Liverpool, with Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Sturridge all ruled out.

Klopp was almost handed a dream start after 10 minutes when James Milner's corner was flicked on by Emre Can and headed against the crossbar by Origi from inside the six-yard box in a golden chance.

Tottenham had struggled going forward in the early stages but almost took the lead when N'Jie - who had come on for the injured Nacer Chadli - picked up Kane's pass after Adam Lallana had given away possession and produced a clever shot which forced Mignolet into an excellent diving save that had Klopp applauding.

The hosts were moving into the ascendancy and when Martin Skrtel was unable to cut out Christian Eriksen's pass, Kane had a shot parried by Mignolet, before Dele Alli's follow-up effort was blocked by a diving Mamadou Sakho.
N'Jie was looking lively and his dipping shot was just over shortly before half-time.

Kyle Walker drove a long-range shot into the arms of Mignolet after the break, but the early stages of the second half did not produce many opportunities.

Referee Craig Pawson was unmoved when Lallana went down in the box under pressure from Alli in what was only a half-hearted penalty appeal from the visitors.

Origi shot straight at Hugo Lloris from a tight angle after receiving a pass from Philippe Coutinho, but a goal never looked like coming in a disappointing second half.

Spurs almost grabbed a late winner when Eriksen's weaving run eventually set up Kane, but Mignolet was again equal to the England striker's effort, before Can fired just wide at the other end as Klopp's introduction to English football ended with a draw.

Ronaldo breaks Raul's all-time goalscoring record for Real Madrid

    1945852_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has usurped Raul as Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer after scoring against Levante on Saturday afternoon.

The Portugal international racked up his latest milestone with a vicious strike from just outside the box, powering the ball into the far corner and beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

The most remarkable thing about Ronaldo's achievement is that he surprassed Raul's tally in just 310 appearances in all competitions.

Ex-Spain international Raul played 741 times for Real over the course of a 16-year period between 1994 and 2010.

Ronaldo joined Madrid from Manchester United in 2009 for a then world-record fee of €94 million (£80m).

The 30-year-old struck 33 times in 35 appearances in all competitions in his first season in the Spanish capital but has since averaged more than 50 goals a season.

Ronaldo has also won a Champions League, a Liga title and two Copa del Rey crowns during his time at the Bernabeu, as well as claiming the last two Ballons d'Or ahead of Barcelona rival Lionel Messi.

It was cool - Klopp satisfied with Liverpool debut

    klopp-cropped_12gq09ahk8zl51gi48fu1u1wha.jpg

New Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp declared himself happy with his debut after watching his side play out a 0-0 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

The Reds earned a point in an end-to-end game at White Hart Lane, though they struggled to truly test Hugo Lloris in the Spurs goal throughout, with Divock Origi's effort that hit the crossbar the closest they came to a winning goal.

Klopp was serenaded by the away fans prior to the game, with supporters carrying banners and flags in support of their new manager, and he admitted that he was touched by the support.

"It was cool, I like this. I don't want to talk about me but first game in the Premier League, coming to White Hart Lane, not the worst place in the world, but it was cool," he told reporters.

"When we have the whistle, it's good, before I tried to look at things I've never seen before. It's a stadium, I've been in other stadiums! We're in, now we can work."

Klopp also hinted that his work as Liverpool manager begins now, having seen his debut delayed by the recent international break, though he admitted that his side's performance could have been better, had they been less "hectic" on the ball.

"I'm satisfied with the start, this is not the worst sign because I did not have the biggest expectations, we have only three days, Tottenham are very, very strong and have a good team," he added. "It was difficult so I'm satisfied. The start was brilliant, we got on the second ball, good timing, Phil (Coutinho) and Adam (Lallana), perfect, in behind, good positions for them.

"The problem of the game, when we had the ball we were not cool enough. We didn't use our skills. We were too hectic, maybe, I'm not sure! Something like this! We didn't see the right option but it's normal, you get the ball, shoot open your view, and play to the side because Tottenham are defending.

"We didn't use these situations but we had our moments, Origi hit the post, some other situations when we could have been better. After three days it was brilliant. Now we have our own game, our experience together and we can go on working."

When asked about recent injury problems suffered by Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings, Klopp praised the impact of Origi, who deputised in the absence of the duo, and revealed that he attempted to sign the forward when he was manager of Borussia Dortmund.

"I wanted to take him to Dortmund when Liverpool bought him," he added. "He went on loan to Lille, he's a very good player, very young, a good technician, in this moment not full of experience in the game because he didn't play so often but we will have fun with this player.

"We were in a battle with Liverpool for him!"

Klopp revealed that Sturridge may return for next week's clash with Rubin Kazan in the Europa League, having only suffered a "little bit of swelling" to his knee after a clash in training with Jordon Ibe.

Messi injury no guarantee for Golden Shoe - Ronaldo

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_667suilh4y8y1efxmpp6h8k89.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo says there is no guarantee he will win the Golden Shoe the 2015-16, despite Lionel Messi's absence with a knee injury.

Ronaldo became the first player to win the individual award four times last season when he beat Messi and Sergio Aguero to the trophy, being awarded the title at a ceremony in Madrid.

The Real Madrid man is the favourite to finish the campaign as Europe's top goalscorer once again this term as a result of the Barcelona star's absence, but he insists other players could emerge as rivals.

"The competition for the Golden Shoe also comes from other leagues," Ronaldo told De Telegraaf.

"There are some fantastic strikers around in England and Germany. There is Wayne Rooney and Aguero in the Premier League and obviously Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga.

"But don't forget Karim Benzema here at Real Madrid and Luis Suarez at Barcelona. Benzema is playing very well this season and Suarez has already won the trophy once while at Liverpool.

Werder Bremen 0-1 Bayern Munich: Muller makes it record nine straight Bundesliga wins

    2091662_heroa.jpg

Bayern Munich became the first side to win their opening nine games of the Bundesliga season with a 1-0 victory over Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion thanks to Thomas Muller's first-half goal.

The in-form Germany forward made it nine wins from nine league games for the champions with a close-range finish midway through the first half, moving them seven points clear of Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

Muller broke the deadlock after a chipped through ball from Thiago Alcantara, the 26-year-old converting at the second attempt to register Bayern's 100th goal of the calendar year.

Bayern failed to add to their lead, as Muller and Robert Lewandowski both wasted efforts before Manuel Neuer was needed to keep Pep Guardiola's side ahead.

Neuer got down well to deny Anthony Ujah just after the hour when the Bremen striker had been gifted a free shot on goal as Rafinha failed to clear.

That was the wake-up call Bayern needed and although they could not find a second goal, they held on for a 12th straight win in all competitions.

Bayern quickly settled into their rhythm and could have gone ahead twice in the opening six minutes but Xabi Alonso and Arturo Vidal both wasted promising positions with wayward strikes.

Attacks from the home side were few and far between as Bayern dominated possession, but a rare break forward after 13 minutes presented an opening to Melvyn Lorenzen, only for the forward to shoot weakly.

Guardiola's side soon regained control and should have opened the scoring midway through the half as Muller found Lewandowski unmarked at the back post, but somehow the prolific Poland striker headed wide from six yards.

But Lewandowski's blushes were spared 60 seconds later as the impressive Thiago found Muller inside the penalty area. Muller's attempt at a first-time finish saw the ball get stuck under his boot before he quickly adjusted his feet to poke past Felix Wiedwald.

Five minutes after the restart Muller had the chance to double his tally as Juan Bernat delivered a teasing ball from the left. Muller timed his run perfectly only to see his volley fly agonisingly wide.

Despite their control, Bayern were far from their rampant best and it was not until just before the hour that the next opportunity arrived, Philipp Lahm floating a pass into Lewandowski but his backheel lacked power.

And their wastefulness was nearly punished after 67 minutes as Rafinha failed to clear a long ball, which fell at the feet of Ujah only for Neuer came to Bayern's rescue with a crucial save.

Buoyed by that opening Bremen finished the game strongly with a flurry of attacks, but they lacked quality in the final third and Bayern were left to celebrate yet another win.

Real Madrid 3-0 Levante: Ronaldo strikes to break new record

    2091752_heroa.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has become Real Madrid's all-time leading goalscorer after finding the net in Saturday's 3-0 win over Levante.

Marcelo gave the hosts a first-half lead before Ronaldo's 324th Madrid goal took him beyond Raul in the club's scoring charts and made the game safe.

Roger and Deyverson called Keylor Navas into action, but the home goalkeeper was in fine form to earn a clean sheet.

After Ronaldo went close to extending his lead over Raul, Jese eventually made it 3-0 with a superb finish from a tight angle.

Victory puts Madrid top of the league, although Villarreal can overtake Rafa Benitez's side if they beat Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Madrid went ahead in the 27th minute after a fine combination between Marcelo and Ronaldo.

The Brazil international won the ball off Jose Luis Morales before playing a one-two with Ronaldo, followed by a powerful finish at the near corner.

Levante nearly immediately replied via Deyverson, yet Navas pulled off a sublime reflex to keep the attacker's header out.

The away side were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal just minutes later. Toni Kroos set up Ronaldo and the 30-year-old worked the ball out of his feet before firing a superb strike into the right-hand corner to seal his place in the record books.

Levante got another chance to peg one back in the 34th minute, but Navas once more proved to be too much of an obstacle as he kept out Roger's shot after some good work from Deyverson.

The away side refused to give up and got another decent opportunity shortly after the interval. Deyverson took advantage of Marcelo's slip to collect a loose ball and set up Roger, yet the forward hesitated too long, allowing Casemiro to steal the ball with a last-ditch tackle.

Ronaldo got a chance to double his personal tally after the referee awarded Madrid a free-kick in a dangerous area following a foul on Lucas Vasquez, yet his set-piece lacked the accuracy to trouble Ruben.

Deyverson should have halved the deficit in the 70th minute when he got all the time and space he needed to unleash a shot from inside the area after a low cross from the left, but the Brazilian's shot hit Nacho before it went out for a corner.

Jese would eventually have the last say at the Bernabeu as he made it three with a stunning finish after being set up by Lucas.

:love:Everton 0-3 Manchester United: Rooney helps Van Gaal's men return to winning ways

    2092412_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney scored his first goal at Goodison Park since 2007 as Manchester United bounced back from defeat to Arsenal with an impressive 3-0 Premier League win over Everton.

Morgan Schneiderlin's first competitive goal for United in the 18th minute gave them the lead before Ander Herrera headed in a second just four minutes later.

David de Gea continued his fine recent form with strong reaction saves to deny Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley as United weathered an early storm in the second half.

But Rooney, who had been urged before the game by manager Louis van Gaal to end his Everton hoodoo, finished a quick counter-attack on 62 minutes to move joint-second with Andy Cole on 187 goals on the all-time Premier League scoring charts.

Barkley did his best to inspire some hope for Everton in the closing stages but United saw out a victory which will restore confidence following their damaging 3-0 loss to Arsenal.

United started with far greater composure than they displayed in the opening stages of that defeat to the Gunners, with Rooney smashing a shot wide after good link-up play with Juan Mata in the 10th minute.

Herrera brought the first save out of Tim Howard with a fierce drive from 20 yards and United took the lead from the following corner. A combination of Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling kept the ball alive after Mata's delivery bounced awkwardly in the box and the ball broke to Schneiderlin, who finished low into the bottom far corner from 12 yards.

Rojo was the architect for United's second on 22 minutes. The Argentina defender, playing at full-back, aimed a pin-point cross from the left to find Herrera's run through the middle and the Spaniard headed down and past Howard.

Anthony Martial was denied a third goal by a combination of John Stones and Brendan Galloway after Rooney had sprung the offside trap and picked out the France forward, before De Gea parried Barkley's effort from a tight angle in a rare first-half chance for Everton.

De Gea saved superbly from Lukaku's stabbed finish on 54 minutes before reacting well to keep out a Barkley free-kick, as Everton started the second half firmly on the front foot.

But a devastating counter-attack from United crushed the Goodison faithful's hopes of a comeback. Phil Jagielka's loose pass was pounced on by Schneiderlin, allowing Herrera to find Rooney behind the defence, and the England captain finished right-footed with aplomb past Howard.

Rooney almost added a fourth after Martial sent him clean through on goal but Jagielka and Howard did enough to thwart his run inside the area, and Martial himself was then denied at the near post after a brilliant piece of close control inside the area.

Barkley fizzed a late free-kick over the bar but United eased through the final 10 minutes to inflict upon Everton only a second league defeat of the season.

Crystal Palace 1-3 West Ham: Lanzini and Payet sink Eagles with late rally

    west-ham-cropped_lob72wvbguqq1p716nf09gd4d.jpg

West Ham left it late to beat 10-man Crystal Palace as goals from Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet in the final five minutes sealed a 3-1 win.

The Hammers dominated the second half after Dwight Gayle's red card just before the break with the score already at 1-1.

Carl Jenkinson put the visitors in front only to then foul Gayle in the box moments later, with Yohan Cabaye converting the penalty, despite having to take it twice due to the striker's encroachment.

West Ham created few clear openings but the aerial power of substitute Andy Carroll proved the difference as the fit-again striker won a header at the back post for Lanzini to slam the loose ball beyond Adrian.

Palace had defended resolutely but Payet lobbed Wayne Hennessey beautifully in injury time as Slaven Bilic's men recorded their fourth away Premier League win of the season to climb to third in the table.

Both sides had enjoyed fine starts to the Premier League season, and came into the game perched in the top six.

Having won at Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City already this term, Bilic's men almost made the perfect start when Lanzini made progress down the left wing straight from kick-off, but Payet did not read his cross and could only prod wide.

The lively start continued when Adrian was forced into an early save from Gayle, but the offside flag was up against the striker.

Payet was lighting up the match and the France international had another good opening when he danced his way towards goal, but Hennessey was alert at his near post.

The visitors made their dominance count when patient build-up play ended with Moses slipping a lovely throughball in behind Pape Souare for Jenkinson to finish calmly.

But Palace immediately hit back when Jenkinson needlessly fouled Gayle in the box.

Cabaye stepped up to beat Adrian easily straight down the middle but referee Mark Clattenburg ordered a retake due to Gayle's encroachment, however, the Frenchman held his nerve and scored again in the top corner.

Palace's chances took a blow when Gayle, who had already been booked for fouling Payet, lunged in on Cheikhou Kouyate and was sent off, with Clattenburg having little option but to show a second yellow card.

Kouyate had the first opening after the break when sublime Hammers passing teed him up, but the midfielder's low drive was blocked.

Jenkinson then sent in a peach of a cross for Diafra Sakho, but his header was narrowly wide.

West Ham's probing was not creating clear openings as Palace's defensive shape denied the Hammers' attacking space.

But Carroll's introduction picked the lock as typical physical dominance opened up space for Lanzini to score and Payet had the final say, adding gloss to the scoreline as Bilic again masterminded another impressive win on the road.
