    Robben: Comeback goal a 'reward'

    arjenrobben-cropped_sas9t9smmmk419sfk7szaw7ls.jpg

Arjen Robben described scoring against Cologne as a "reward" after returning from a long layoff through injury for Bayern Munich.

The Dutch winger was named in Pep Guardiola's starting line-up for Bayern's 4-0 Bundesliga win and opened the scoring at the Allianz Arena to help the Bavarians to a 10th successive league victory.

The 31-year-old had been sidelined for almost two months with a thigh injury but felt he settled back into first-team action right from the start.

"You always have to wait and see. I was very happy to be back on the pitch," Robben said.

"I think I was surprisingly good right from the start, but I have been training well and I felt good. To score the first goal was a nice reward for the hard work I've put in. When you win 4-0, the day is even better."

Robben's 35th-minute strike marked his 75th Bundesliga goal and, after missing seven weeks of action since injuring himself on international duty, he said it had been tough to sit in the stands.

"Only being able to watch is the hardest thing for any footballer," he said.

"You have to try and put all your positive energy into your recovery. I put everything in and worked very hard. Credit to everyone who supported me. I did it. I'm back."

Lahm keen for Guardiola stay at Bayern

    philipplahm-cropped_wkthc5ikcglv1hbojhmmpnt87.jpg

Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm has told coach Pep Guardiola he wants him to remain at the helm.

Lahm was part of the Bayern side that crushed Cologne 4-0 on Saturday for their 10th win in as many Bundesliga games this campaign.

With his contract due to expire next year, Guardiola's future remains uncertain and speculation surrounding him is constant.

But Lahm said Bayern's players were eager for the Spaniard to stay at the Allianz Arena.

"The team's opinion is clear. We enjoy working together with our coach and he is an outstanding manager," he said.

"Everything else is not in our hands. The only thing I can say is that the team would like Guardiola to stay."

Asked if he had told Guardiola, Lahm said: "Yes, I have."

Guardiola has led Bayern to two league titles and multiple cups since taking charge in mid-2013.

    Barcelona approve record €633m budget

    2112292_heroa.jpg

Barcelona saw a record €633 million budget approved on Sunday as the club look ahead to a more secure financial future.

The club's economic vice-president Susana Monje revealed on Thursday that the budget - which represents the "highest in the club's history" - was set to be presented at the weekend with an increase to wage allocation key in light of Uefa's Financial Fair Play regulations.

Barca currently spend €380m on wages before tax - 63 per cent of their total income - however, last season's treble triumph saw an increase to over 70% that figure due to variables and bonuses, a figure which was in breach of FFP.

In response the club increased income to €595m for 2015-16 thanks to a number of new merchandising deals and sold the likes of Pedro to Chelsea before representing the new budget to the Assembly.

"There is sufficient margin and we are not even close to the limit at this stage," Monje said on Thursday. "So Barcelona can take on renewals and new incorporations if the coaching staff consider these to be necessary."

Improved terms have been promised to Neymar, who was a summer target for Manchester United, but agreeing a financial package worth more than €600m was key - with 655 from a total of 758 members voting in favour.

Sunday's green light from the Assembly sees Barca's wage budget increased by around €80m, meaning they can renew the Brazilian's current contract without any risk of infringing FFP regulations.

Pogba right to remain at Juve - Raiola

    paul-pogba-juventus-borussia-monchengladbach-champions-league_1dcs7ou04ips319uy3ysgw0kc2.jpg

Paul Pogba is confident he made the right decision in choosing to remain at Juventus during the transfer window, according to agent Mino Raiola.

The France international was linked with a host of top European clubs, but instead opted to remain with the Italian champions in Turin.

And amid reports of a deal to join Barcelona, Raiola has spoken out to dismiss the speculation.

"Is there a deal for a future sale to Barcelona? Absolutely not," Raiola is quoted as saying by Radio Deejay.

"Anyone who wants him has to sit down with Juve and then we will see. Over the summer there were three or four teams interested, but he chose to stay at Juventus and is still convinced of that choice."

Pogba has struggled for form this season, with Juve languishing 15th in Serie A.

However, asked whether Pogba felt the pressure of wearing the number 10 shirt, Raiola added: "It's the Italian sick way of seeing things. Last year he was applauded for anything, now he's jeered when playing the same way.

"Pogba remained at Juve because he made the choice with his heart when he had big important offers and now fans forget that.

"I think he had a difficult start to the season for many reasons, but as Pavel Nedved said, he needs to be left in peace. He's a great champion who is going through the same period of form as the rest of his teammates.

"In the last game, I saw the old Pogba."

Vardy: Ranieri was like a caged animal

    claudio-ranieri-and-jamie-vardy-cropped_1u7nt21sqych51g9xayg2ng7sh.jpg

Jamie Vardy likened Leicester City coach Claudio Ranieri to a "caged animal" in the closing stages of the Premier League meeting with Crystal Palace.

The Italian whipped the crowd into a frenzy as Leicester closed in on the three points at the King Power Stadium, although Alan Pardew accused him of "goading" his Palace players.

And Vardy – on target for the seventh consecutive Premier League game in the 1-0 win – was both impressed and amused by his coach's antics.

"I had to have a little chuckle to be fair at the end," he told LCFC.com."I didn't know why the crowd were getting so hectic and then I looked at the boss and he looked like a caged animal!

"He was going absolutely crackers. But he's got the fans absolutely booming after that and you could hear from their roar that they wanted us to see it through and they've helped us get the three points."

The England international also had an animalistic comparison for Leicester's defence, likening them to lions for keeping their first clean sheet in 12 matches in all competitions this season."You've seen how we've defended at the end," Vardy added.

"We've conceded a few lately but we were defending like absolute lions and the three points were fully deserved for the second-half performance I think."They have put their bodies on the line with every ball getting clipped into the box at the end – it was non-stop.

"They defended brilliantly and it just shows the character in the squad because every man was defending."

Tim Sherwood sacked by Aston Villa

    1959092_heroa.jpg

Aston Villa have announced the sacking of manager Tim Sherwood with the club sitting second bottom of the Premier League.

Villa have endured a poor start to the campaign, having lost eight of their 10 league matches, after recording one point from the previous nine games.

After maintaining the club's standing in the top-flight last season and leading the Midlands side to their first FA Cup final appearance in 15 years, Sherwood spent over £50million in transfer fees over the summer.

However, with the club in 19th place and four points from safety, the Villa board have moved quickly to part company with Sherwood.

'Aston Villa Football Club has parted company with manager Tim Sherwood today,' an offical club statement read.

'The Board has monitored the performances closely all season and believes the results on the pitch were simply not good enough and that a change is imperative.

'However, the Club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Tim for all his efforts during a difficult period last season and for the many positive contributions he has made to the entire football setup during his time with the Club. We wish him well in the future.'

Kevin MacDonald has been named as interim boss, with Villa's search for a new manager already underway.

Sunderland 3-0 Newcastle: Coloccini sees red as Black Cats pick up first win

    2136132_heroa.jpg

Sunderland picked up their first Premier League win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Newcastle thanks to goals from Adam Johnson, Billy Jones and Steven Fletcher after Fabricio Coloccini had been sent off.

Newcastle dominated the opening period but found themselves behind in first-half stoppage time when Johnson converted a penalty after Coloccini saw red for a clumsy challenge.

Sunderland made the most of their extra man in the second half, adding a second when Jones converted from inside the six-yard box.

The crossbar denied Johnson a second but Fletcher got the third with a fine finish four minutes from time.

Sunderland consequently rise off the bottom of the Premier League table with a record sixth consecutive league victory over Newcastle.

Newcastle took just three minutes to force Costel Pantilimon into a save when the goalkeeper reacted quickly to parry Coloccini's acrobatic volley from Aleksandar Mitrovic's flick-on behind.

The Serbian striker went close himself nine minutes later, looping a header from Daryl Janmaat's cross wide as Steve McClaren's side continued to apply all the pressure.

Georginio Wijnaldum – scorer of four goals in Newcastle's previous outing against Norwich City – was next to worry Pantilimon, but the keeper was equal to his low drive from 18 yards after a neat exchange of passes with Mitrovic.

Former Sunderland midfielder Jack Colback was denied by Pantilimon at his near post in the 26th minute and Mitrovic nudged narrowly wide from the resultant corner.

There was no let-up from Newcastle but Sunderland were handed a lifeline in first-half stoppage time when Coloccini barged Fletcher to ground in the box following a counter-attack.
The Argentine was shown a red card and Johnson slotted the subsequent penalty into the bottom right-hand corner before racing to the other end of the pitch to celebrate.

Despite having a man fewer, McClaren's side were denied an equaliser 10 minutes after the interval as Pantilimon raced off his line to block a shot from Mitrovic, the Serbian having cut inside of full-back DeAndre Yedlin.

Sunderland's advantage was doubled in the 65th minute when Yann M'Vila's superb volley from the left-hand side of the box was tapped into the net by Jones.

Pantilimon thwarted a Wijnaldum effort before Johnson was denied a second when his curling effort from 20 yards rattled the bar with 18 minutes remaining.

Newcastle fought for a way back into the game but their willingness to attack cost them dearly as Fletcher volleyed home from a lovely Younes Kaboul pass following a swift break in the 86th minute.

The victory was Sunderland's first of the season, sending them above Aston Villa and Newcastle into 18th.

Baston: Barcelona just as good without Messi

    lionel-messi-barcelona_10la4slh5vezb1ooop2z1l2dmc.jpg

Borjan Baston believes Eibar's task against Barcelona has been made only slightly easier by the absence of Lionel Messi for Sunday's La Liga encounter at Camp Nou.

The Argentine attacker was ruled out for around two months with a torn knee ligament he sustained during last month’s 2-1 win against Las Palmas.

Baston, on loan at Eibar from Atletico Madrid, believes his side have a chance to cause an upset in Catalonia but accepts playing the Spanish champions in their own back yard will be just as difficult without facing Messi.

"I am always in favour of playing against the stronger players, but at the end of the day Barcelona have a great team with many players that make a difference," he said.

"If Messi is not there then there will probably be somebody else who will stand out. But yes, it is true that without Messi there are more possibilities to get something good out of it.

"But they have Neymar, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta, who seems to have recovered. In the end it is such a good team with so many good players, that it is very difficult to face them."

Eibar have made a great start to La Liga in which they are sixth in the table, but Baston believes breaching Barcelona's defence will prove tough even though they have already conceded 11 goals this season.

He added: "It is certain that it will not be easy to score against Barcelona or that their defence will play badly.

"They have great players, with some of the best defenders in the world. Maybe they haven't started the season as they ended the last one but they continue to be great players and when they all come together as a team it will be difficult to hurt them."

Juventus 2-0 Atalanta: Dybala shines in routine win

    2137252_heroa.jpg

Paulo Dybala helped Juventus rediscover their goalscoring form with a goal and an assist in Sunday's 2-0 win over Atalanta as Paul Pogba saw a late penalty saved.

Following consecutive goalless draws with Inter and Borussia Monchengladbach, the Serie A champions were back on target at the Juventus Stadium with Dybala making a strong case to retain his starting spot up front in an impressive display.

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri has received criticism for failing to use the 21-year-old enough this season but was rewarded for giving him a start 28 minutes in when Dybala produced a delightful strike from the edge of the area.

Atalanta had lost just once in seven league matches prior to their trip to Turin but the result was all-but sealed when Mario Mandzukic registered his first Serie A goal courtesy of clever build-up play from Pogba and Dybala.

The champions' task was made easier by the dismissal of Rafael Toloi late on, before Dybala earned a penalty subsequently spurned by Pogba 11 minutes from time.

Dybala had further chances in the final stages as Juve marked defensive stalwart Giorgio Chiellini's 300th league outing with a routine win.

Allegri brought in Roberto Pereyra and Dybala alongside Mandzukic and saw Juve start brightly.

Leonardo Bonucci glanced Dybala's free-kick at goal - Marco Sportiello equal to it - before the Atalanta goalkeeper kept Mandzukic's close-range effort out following a deep corner.

The visitors were without Marcelo Estigarribia and Emanuele Suagher due to injury but grew back into the game prior to the half-hour mark with Chiellini's intervention cutting out Boukary Drame's cross.

However, Dybala's stunning strike gave Juve a deserved lead 17 minutes before the break as the Argentine registered his fourth league goal of the season.

The former Palermo man sustained a knock soon after and was briefly forced off for treatment, and Pereyra was withdrawn with an injury shortly before half-time.

Sportiello's fine save from a Dybala shot was the last action of the first period but the Atalanta stopper was picking the ball out of his net early in the second when Dybala turned provider for Mandzukic.

A delightful backheel from Pogba saw Dybala square for Mandzukic to finish from close range, opening his league account in the process, having moved from Bayern Munich in the close-season.

While Edoardo Reja's Atalanta remained comfortable in possession they struggled to threaten as Juve grew in confidence, Dybala flashing a free-kick wide before being denied a second soon after by a smart Sportiello save.

Having been booked for a foul, Toloi was dismissed for a similar offence 17 minutes from time as Pogba's frustrating campaign continued when his penalty was saved by Sportiello after a foul on Dybala.

AC Milan 2-1 Sassuolo: Adriano nets late winner against 10-man visitors

    2137352_heroa.jpg

A late goal from Luiz Adriano saw AC Milan register their first win in four league games in a 2-1 victory over 10-man Sassuolo in Serie A on Sunday.

The pressure has mounted on Milan coach Sinisa Mihajlovic over recent weeks, with his side having only won three of their opening eight league fixtures prior to Sunday's game.

That poor form looked set to continue when Domenico Berardi's outstanding free-kick levelled proceedings shortly after the interval, with Carlos Bacca's penalty having given Milan the lead on the half-hour mark.

It was a controversial opener as Bacca in winning the spot-kick appeared to dive at the feet of Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli, who received a red card for his troubles.

And, after missing a hosts of chances, Milan finally made their numerical advantage count in the 86th minute, with substitute Adriano the hero as he nodded home to secure a first win in three Serie A games.

Mihajlovic made a number of changes to his Milan side that drew 1-1 with Torino last time out, the most notable being handing a start to 16-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

It was another of those changes, Bacca, who should have got through on goal in the game's first chance of note, but a heavy touch from the Colombian allowed Paolo Cannavaro to intercept.

Cannavaro almost turned from hero to villain for the visitors a few moments later, his header falling straight to Giacomo Bonaventura, whose venomous volley rippled the side-netting.

Milan were rewarded for their promising play just prior to the half-hour mark, referee Gianluca Rocchi awarding the hosts a penalty after he deemed that Bacca had been fouled by Consigli, who was dismissed despite his pleas of innocence.

And Bacca made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick, with substitute stopper Gianluca Pegolo unable to prevent the strike from nestling into the left-corner.

Despite a bright start to the second half from Milan, Sassuolo drew level when Berardi curled a sublime free-kick into the top-left corner from 35 yards out, leaving Donnarumma helpless.

Mihajlovic introduced Luiz Adriano on the hour mark, and the Brazil striker almost made an immediate impact, linking up with Alessio Cerci, who slipped in Bacca, whose shot was smothered by Pegolo.

Cerci was the architect again a few moments after, his drilled cross resulting in a goal-mouth scramble, but Francesco Acerbi managed to scrape it clear after blocking Adriano's effort.

All hope of a victory appeared lost for Milan after Luca Antonelli blasted over from close range, but Adriano was on hand to spare Mihajlovic's blushes as he headed in at the back post from Cerci's corner.

Manchester United 0-0 Manchester City: Spoils shared in dour derby stalemate

    2137322_heroa.jpg

Manchester City returned to the summit of the Premier League after a dull derby clash on Sunday, though Manchester United rallied late on only to be denied a last-gasp victory.

The 170th edition of the fixture was expected to be one for the Old Trafford crowd to savour – United having the opportunity to leapfrog their neighbours in the standings, while City had scored 11 goals in their previous two league wins.

But such thrills were in meagre supply throughout 90 minutes contested by two of the most expensively assembled starting XIs in Premier League history, with United failing to register a single shot in the first half for the first time in over a decade.

The absence of David Silva and Sergio Aguero through injury badly impacted upon City's creativity, while an off-colour Wayne Rooney was unable to effectively supplement Anthony Martial's ingenuity in the United attack.

Substitute Jesse Lingard was almost an unlikely derby hero for United, prodding a volley against the crossbar from Martial's wonderful lofted ball five minutes from time and City goalkeeper Joe Hart saved brilliantly from Chris Smalling as the clock ticked down.

City edge on to 22 points, ahead of Arsenal at the summit on goal difference, while United are fourth and level on 20 with third-place West Ham.

After speculation over his involvement dominated the pre-match build-up, City captain Vincent Kompany returned at centre-back to partner Nicolas Otamendi for the first time, while Manuel Pellegrini replaced Jesus Navas with Fernando to bolster his central midfield.

Louis van Gaal made a solitary change to the United side that drew 1-1 against CSKA Moscow in midweek, with Juan Mata replacing Lingard, and his settled line-up made the more assured start.

City's first sight of goal came in the 12th minute, Raheem Sterling's shot deflected wide after a one-two with Fernandinho – the Brazil midfielder who earned a fifth booking of the season and a suspension for bringing down Martial a few moments later.

Soon after, a clash of heads between Kompany and Rooney left his United counterpart bloodied and off the field for repairs.

Yaya Toure enjoyed the best opening of a forgettable opening 45 minutes as half-time approached – heading Kevin De Bruyne's right-wing corner narrowly wide before lofting a searching pass from the same player off target.

Martial's lightning-quick footwork offered United's greatest source of encouragement before the break, Kompany booked for a rash foul on the France international, but Ander Herrera was the man to unnerve City after the restart.

Having seen a shot deflected wide, the midfielder collected a short corner and went down under a challenge from Sterling, who went unpunished but made way for Navas in the 53rd minute.

United almost found success with a more direct set-piece approach, Morgan Schneiderlin agonisingly close to a decisive touch as Smalling's header skidded past Hart's near post.

Otamendi made a vital clearance as Rooney lurked on the end of a low Bastian Schweinsteiger cross and Hart burst from his goal to deny Mata as the pressure on City grew.

Pellegrini's decision to replace Toure with veteran defender Martin Demichelis showed his willingness to accept a point from a wholly disjointed performance and Lingard and Smalling were denied by the woodwork and Hart respectively as the cross-Manchester tussle ended all-square for the first time in 13 meetings in all competitions.

Bournemouth 1-5 Tottenham: Kane hits hat-trick as Cherries suffer again

    2137692_heroa.jpg

Harry Kane rediscovered his goalscoring touch as he scored a hat-trick in Tottenham's 5-1 Premier League win at Bournemouth on a difficult day for Artur Boruc.

Bournemouth, who went into Sunday's game at the Vitality Stadium bidding to avoid a fourth straight game without a win, broke the deadlock inside the first minute.

Matt Ritchie's vicious close-range finish put the hosts ahead, only for Tottenham - aided by an error-strewn performance from Bournemouth goalkeeper Boruc - to take control with three goals in 20 minutes.

Kane equalised with a ninth-minute penalty after he had been fouled by Boruc, before Mousa Demble made it 2-1 with a simple finish from inside the box eight minutes later.

Erik Lamela pounced on another Boruc mistake to extend the advantage with a 29th-minute tap-in and the rout continued after half-time courtesy of Kane, whose only previous Tottenham goal this season came in last month's win over Manchester City.

The England striker turned home a magnificent Christian Eriksen cross in the 56th minute and capped off his treble seven minutes later after Boruc had failed to handle a Toby Alderweireld header.

Bournemouth opened the scoring after just 49 seconds as Charlie Daniels found Ritchie at the far post to lash a half-volley into the bottom-right corner for the quickest Premier League goal of the season so far.

But their lead lasted a little over seven minutes as a rash decision by Boruc afforded Kane the chance to level matters.

Kane was felled by Boruc after latching onto a clever throughball from Eriksen and coolly slotted home from 12 yards.

The hosts were punished for a Joshua King miss soon after when Danny Rose's deflected long-range effort fell to Dembele, who confidently steered the ball beyond Boruc.

Boruc brilliantly kept out Alderweireld's near-post header from a corner but then handed Tottenham a third goal with a dreadful error.

The Pole spilled Kane's deflected cross from the right straight to Lamela, who had the simple task of tapping into an empty net from point-blank range.

Bournemouth were left to wonder how they did not make it 3-2 on the stoke of half-time, Marc Pugh seeing an effort cleared off the line before King hit the post.

However, 11 minutes after half-time, Kane ended the game as a contest by converting Eriksen's wonderful delivery and was provided with an easy third thanks to Boruc's fumble seven minutes later.

Ritchie then had a long-range effort turned over by Hugo Lloris at the other end before Eriksen curled a strike against the post as Tottenham moved up to sixth in the table, while Bournemouth sit two points above the relegation zone.
