Lahm: Guardiola future out of Bayern's hands

    guardiola-lahm-bayern-munich-barcelona-champions-league-12052015_12tlrsyjuzuqg141deb05f1s9s.jpg

Philipp Lahm says the future of Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola is out of the squad's hands after reiterating his support for the Spaniard.

Guardiola's three-year contract expires at the end of the season, with the former Barcelona coach yet to agree terms on a new deal.

The 44-year-old has been linked with both Chelsea and Manchester City, but Lahm has urged him to extend his stay at the Allianz Arena.

The Bayern Munich captain said: "It's not a secret the team works well with him and follows him. Everything else is not in our hands."

Lahm was talking after Bayern recorded an impressive 3-1 win over Wolfsburg in the second round of the DFB Pokal.

The victory continues the club's fine start to the campaign, with Frankfurt next up in the Bundesliga as they bid to make it 11 wins from 11 league games.

"Of course it's not a normal thing to show a good performance every time. This is impressive. Every Bundesliga match is a new challange, our opponents doesnt't make it easy for us," he added.

"The nice thing is that we stay hungry. We have a lot of energy and concentration on the pitch, otherwise such a streak would not be possible."

Barcelona on best behaviour, assures Luis Enrique

    luisenrique-cropped_1scup1ewef8ft1fruh7yj15gz3.jpg

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique says his players behave well during games amid fears Javier Mascherano could be handed a four-match ban for a foul-mouthed rant at a linesman.

Mascherano was shown a red card in Sunday's 3-1 win over Eibar for shouting "your mother's c***" at the official - Luis Enrique among those to defend the midfielder, stating it carried different connotations in his native Argentina.

However, there are fears Mascherano could recieve a similar punishment to Gerard Pique after the defender was banned for four matches for a similar outburst in the Supercopa de Espana.

A four-game ban for Mascherano would rule him out of El Clasico next month but Luis Enrique stated his desire not to dwell on the issue.

"The ban will be whatever they decide it to be, irrespective of what I think," he told reporters.

"I'll just accept the ban. I won't comment before or after and I won't dwell on it anymore.

"I spoke with Masche and the whole team. I think there is an improvement in behaviour among the players and I don’t think there is any behaviour different to the normal protests that happen in a match and takes place with all teams.

"My job is to deal with the obstacles that you come across during a campaign and that is what we are doing."

Along with Mascherano's possible suspension, Luis Enrique is currently without Lionel Messi, Rafinha, Andres Iniesta and Sergi Roberto due to injuries.

Deschamps: I could recall Ben Arfa

    hatembenarfa-cropped_kxz506jduwu2z58dex2d3kzg.jpg

France coach Didier Deschamps has not ruled out calling up the in-form Hatem Ben Arfa ahead of Euro 2016.

The former Newcastle United winger has made up for lost time at Nice this term, having spent much of the last campaign out of action due to technicalities regarding the number of clubs he had represented in a season.

However, with seven goals in 10 Ligue 1 games, there have been calls for Ben Arfa to return to the national squad ahead of friendlies with Germany and England in November.

Asked by Eurosport about the possibilities of a recall for Ben Arfa, Deschamps said: "I did not say no.

"Why not? My reflection on the issue will come next week based on what he has done with Nice."

Ben Arfa has not featured for France since Euro 2012, with the 28-year-old having lost his way at Newcastle prior to a temporary loan spell at Hull City.

Despite a fractious relationship with Deschamps while the pair were at Marseille, the France boss says Ben Arfa will get the call if his form merits it.

"There are players who are there [in the squad] and who give me satisfaction," he added.

"To recall a new player, I have to remove one. I will not accumulate players. These are decisions that will be made with a view to the competition.

"If someone can bring something to the France team, it doesn't matter that they had a problem with me."

Shaw steps up Manchester United comeback

    lukeshaw-cropped_uv7t5lhoh38j14nmqyxutn8iq.jpg

Luke Shaw has taken another step on his long road back to fitness after returning to Manchester United's Carrington training complex, making the most of the club's state-of-the-art physiotherapy facilities.

The England left-back suffered a horrific double leg fracture in the 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSV in September, but club physios were sufficiently pleased with his progress at home in the weeks immediately afterwards to invite him back into the club for the next stage of his recovery.

Shaw attended Carrington on three separate occasions last week, and is now due to go to work in a hydrotherapy pool and on an aquatic treadmill as United make the most of the specialised equipment they had installed more than two years ago in their bid to help players in their rehabilitation from long-term injuries.

The hydrotherapy pool will allow Shaw to perform a number of exercises until monitoring from a series of cameras which will be able to track the former Southampton star's progress. Meanwhile, use of the aquatic treadmill will give him the opportunity to put his leg muscles to work in order to prevent any seizure or wastage, all while reducing weight-bearing pressure on his lower limbs.

Verratti is worth €100m like Pogba - agent

    marco-verratti-cropped_a7vr0gwo04wm1p9srdm5fuzf5.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti rivals Paul Pogba as a €100million player, according to his agent.

The Italy international has developed into one of Europe's leading central midfielders during his three years in the French capital, during which time he has won three Ligue 1 titles.

Verratti has been linked with a potential exit during the past 12 months, with Barcelona widely reported as a leading candidate for his signature should he decide to leave.

Juventus star Pogba has likewise been linked with both Barca and PSG themselves in the past year and Verratti's agent, Donato Di Campli, believes both should command the highest price tags.

"I hear in places that Pogba is worth €100million. For me, Verratti is worth that," he told France Football.

"We've seen huge amounts spent on foreign players and, right now, he's probably the best Italian player."

However, Di Campli has made it clear Verratti is keen to stay at Parc des Princes, though he has suggested it could take a new and improved contract to secure his future.

"Marco's desire is to stay. He has flourished in Paris. The important thing is that he is recognised with a fair amount," he added.

Verratti has made over 140 appearances for PSG since his move from Pescara.

Zola would welcome Terry at Al Arabi

    john-terry-cropped_10t2amwh52gde17n89fqvtppxb.jpg

Al Arabi coach Gianfranco Zola has revealed he is interested in luring John Terry away from Chelsea.

The defender has made over 650 appearances in all competitions for the Stamford Bridge side since making his debut in 1998-99, but he is no longer an undisputed starter this season.

The 34-year-old could therefore opt to move on when his contract expires at the end of the season and Zola is relishing the prospect of working with the centre-back at the Qatar side.

"Terry is a big player and Al Arabi are interested in big players, so we will see what happens," the former Chelsea forward was quoted as saying by The Mirror.

"There is a chance because it is one of the places where people want to go. The quality of life is very high here. There are clubs that pay well for the players to come, so I wouldn't be surprised if I see Terry playing in this country maybe next year, maybe in two years. I don't know exactly when.

"The connection is easy. Me and John played together and have a very high opinion of each other so it comes quite natural to do that.

"I can tell you there are no contacts right now, that's for sure, but in the future we will see. It could be one possibility. We will see because right now we are just month and a half into the season and I am very happy that I am coaching, so I didn't even think about changing anybody."

Guardiola: I can only say good things about Coman

    kingsley-coman-cropped_1339f99hw7n891r1gt47gxpvms.jpg

Pep Guardiola has taken the time to praise Kingsley Coman in the wake of Bayern Munich's 3-1 DFB-Pokal win over Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

The youngster joined Bayern from Juventus on a two-year loan deal at the start of the 2015-16 campaign and has since impressed with a string of fine performances.

Coman has scored twice in eight appearances in all competitions for Bayern so far, while setting up five more goals.

"Kingsley is still only 19 years old. [Technical director] Michael Reschke brought him in," Guardiola was quoted as saying by Abendzeitung.

"He is a typical attacker, who is very fast and can play on either wing. He has a lot of quality going forward.

"We have plenty of options on the wings with Coman, Douglas Costa and Arjen Robben.

"Coman is very important for Bayern. He has always done very well for us and I can only say good things about him."

Bayern have the option to make Coman's stay at the club permanent for a set fee of €21million, having already paid €7m for his loan spell.

Leverkusen admit Calhanoglu could be sold

    hakan-calhanoglu-cropped_1wnjlms3dgrql14wi6ka27fija.jpg

Bayer Leverkusen star Hakan Calhanoglu could be sold should a significant transfer bid be made, the club's CEO has admitted.

The 21-year-old has emerged as one of the Bundesliga's most highly-rated attacking players over the last 18 months and has already registered five goals and four assists so far this season.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller confirmed that clubs made enquiries for Calhanoglu during the latest transfer window, while recent reports in Germany have claimed that Manchester United are ready to rival Barcelona and Atletico Madrid for the Turkey international, having scouted him this season.

While insisting Leverkusen are keen to keep him, CEO Michael Schade has admitted that any serious bids would have to be considered.

"We want to keep Hakan but, for us, there is an absolute upper limit," he said to Sport Bild.

Calhanoglu, who made headlines in February 2014 with an incredible 50-yard free-kick goal against Borussia Dortmund, is under contract at the BayArena until 2019.

Aubameyang eyes future in La Liga

    pierreemerickaubameyang-cropped_1l57lot37wh021b3thycdd971k.jpg

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has set his sights on a move to La Liga in the future, but only when he decides the time is right to leave Borussia Dortmund.

The Gabon international has been in sensational form in the Bundesliga this season with 13 goals in 10 appearances, making him the top goalscorer in the league ahead of Robert Lewandowski.

Dortmund recently tied Aubameyang down to a new contract at Signal Iduna Park until 2020, but the 26-year-old says he would like to test himself in Spain later in his career, the country of his mother's birth.

"One day I'll leave to play in another league," he told BBC World Service. "My dream is to play in Spain.

"After that contract I have this dream to play in Spain. I hope that will happen but when? I don't know.

"Lots of people think that the Premier League would good for me but my mum is Spanish and I really have that dream to play over there.

"After that maybe one day the Premier League but for the moment I aim to one day play in Spain."

Borussia Dortmund 7-1 Paderborn: Castro nets double as BVB cruise in rout

    2154352_heroa.jpg

Borussia Dortmund came from behind to launch a demolition job as a 7-1 DFB-Pokal victory ended Stefan Effenberg's perfect start to life as Paderborn coach, with Gonzalo Castro netting twice.

Effenberg masterminded consecutive wins in his opening two matches in charge of the Bundesliga 2 side and a dreadful error from Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Burki presented the prospect of an improbable cup upset.

Croatian striker Srdjan Lakic was the beneficiary midway through the first half but Dortmund's response was clinical in front of the Signal Iduna Park faithful.

Leading marksman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang rested on the bench following his hat-trick in the 5-1 win over Augsburg and he looked on as Adrian Ramos, Gonzalo Castro and Shinji Kagawa all found a way through before half-time.

Ilkay Gundogan then converted a penalty to continue the rout and Castro scored a brilliant second.

There was worse to come for Effenberg – the Dortmund faithful predictably revelling in the former Bayern Munich hero's misery – as the excellent Henrikh Mkhitaryan teed up substitute Lukasz Piszczek before deservedly completing the scoring.

Before things unravelled completely, Dortmund were confronted with a well-drilled backline in the opening stages and Kagawa laboured too long before shooting at Lukas Kruse in the Paderborn goal.

Burki saved sharply at his near post to keep out a well-disguised Suleyman Koc strike but the Switzerland international was culpable when Dortmund went behind in shambolic circumstances after 21 minutes.

An ill-judged pass to Gundogan was sent back to the goalkeeper at pace and he dallied on the ball, gifting a simple finish to the on-rushing Lakic.

Unfortunately for Paderborn, their earlier discipline immediately deserted them and, after Kagawa clipped the top of the bar from Gundogan's throughball, Dortmund were back on terms four minutes later.

Ramos sprung the offside trap to collect Castro's perfectly weighted pass, coolly rounding Kruse to finish.

The roles were reversed when Castro stole in behind Daniel Bruckner to collect Ramos' flick forward and give Thomas Tuchel's team the lead.
Mkhitaryan twice came close to extending the advantage for a rampant Dortmund before Kagawa took the toughest of the opportunities to fall his way two minutes from the interval.

Castro was involved once more, finding his team-mate with a sumptuous first-time backheel, and the Japan star skipped past Dominik Wydra's challenge to lift a delicate finish into the net.

Matthias Ginter curled a shot over as Dortmund resumed on the front foot and the full-back drew a rash foul from Wydra to earn a 55th-minute penalty.

Gundogan stepped up and made no mistake, sending Kruse the wrong way and he was involved three minutes later in a brilliant fifth.

Mkhitaryan cut in from the left to feed Gundogan, who sashayed past a pair of challenges and played Castro through with the outside of his right foot to finish.

A beleaguered Paderborn were indebted to Kruse – a sharp reaction stop preventing Ramos from netting his second of the night and a double save from substitute Sven Bender capping a busy evening for the keeper – before their hosts brutally added insult to injury.

Piszczek tucked away Mkhitaryan's low cross from close range and turned provider for the Armenian to cap another irresistible attack.

Zidane: Ronaldo and Bale not for sale

    baleronaldo-cropped_2bhml9qu7ix51qs0k52rbkqw9.jpg

Zinedine Zidane says that Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale are staying put at Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has recently been linked with a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu and back to the Premier League with Manchester United, the club where he first made his name.

But Madrid great Zidane, who won the Champions League with the club in 2002, has insisted that Ronaldo and Bale will not be leaving the Spanish capital.

"No, he [Ronaldo] is not for sale, it wouldn't make sense," the former France international told ShortList.

"Big players are what people want to read about, so that is why they are written about, but why would Real Madrid have any intention of selling the best player in the world?

"Cristiano Ronaldo has been the best player in the world for the past few years, and he knows he is the best.

"It doesn't mean that he doesn't work hard, or that he doesn't want to improve and get better, but he has that confidence where he knows how good he is.

"I was not the most prolific goalscorer, but I knew how good I was. I knew that I could read the game and see things one or two seconds quicker than everybody else."

Wales star Bale has experienced a mixed start to his career at Madrid, with injuries and a drop in form last season generating speculation about his future with the club. Zidane, though, is certain that the former Tottenham winger will also be remaining at Madrid for the foreseeable future.

"Of course clubs are going to want Gareth, he is one of the best in the world, but I am not sure how much clearer we can be," maintained Zidane, who is currently the manager of Real Madrid's reserve side.

"Gareth has made it clear, his agent has made it clear, we have made it clear, his future is at Real Madrid. We sign the best players in the world, we don't sell them."

Villanovense 0-0 Barcelona: Blaugrana youngsters in stalemate against minnows

    2155352_heroa.jpg

Barcelona's defence of their Copa del Rey crown began inauspiciously as they were held to an embarrassing goalless draw against third-tier Villanovense at Estadio Romero Cuerda.

Luis Enrique's men barely created an opportunity in the first of two legs on Wednesday, meaning their semi-professional opponents will perhaps head to Camp Nou on December 1 scenting the opportunity of a monumental upset in the round of 32 contest.

The match took place in an environment far removed from Barca's iconic home, illustrated by Villanovense expanding their 3,000 capacity with extra chairs that were dotted around the running track surrounding the pitch.

Enrique predictably deployed an experimental XI, with most of his regular stars handed a much-needed rest against the minnows.

But the visitors were given a few scares in a hotly-contested opening half, Javi Sanchez hitting the crossbar just before the break.

Barcelona improved after the interval, yet rarely threatened Jose Fuentes' goal as the hosts held on for a famous draw.

Perhaps inspired by the extra support on display, the hosts began in impressive fashion and almost opened the scoring when Angel Pajuelo skipped past a challenge and hit narrowly wide.

Barcelona predictably enjoyed a period of dominance thereafter, although clear-cut chances initially proved elusive.

Luis Enrique's men should have taken the lead in the 32nd minute, only for Munir El Haddadi to miss a simple opportunity.

Marc Bartra's effort from an Adriano Correia free-kick deflected into the path of the forward, who blazed over when seemingly destined to score.

Villanovense continued to unexpectedly hold their own, epitomised by Cubi nodding just over.

The dream of opening the scoring against the big guns almost came to fruition four minutes before half-time, Sanchez meeting Pingu's corner to the front post with a back-heel volley that skimmed the woodwork.
Barcelona's annoyance continued early in the second period, with their lack of cutting edge summed up by a Jeremy Mathieu 20-yard effort that missed the target by some distance.

Sandro Ramirez came a little closer, cutting inside from the left wing before sending a fizzing effort narrowly over.

Barca continued to control the ball, although their dominance of possession failed to yield real openings.

The visitors almost snatched a win they scarcely deserved in the 87th minute, with Fuentes producing a fine save to tip Bartra's bullet header over.

Enrique and the Catalan club's fans will expect better when the majority of the first team are recalled for the Liga match away to Getafe on Saturday.

AC Milan 1-0 Chiveo: Second half Antonelli goal eases pressure on Mihajlovic

    2155512_heroa.jpg

Luca Antonelli's second-half strike helped AC Milan defeat Chievo 1-0 at San Siro on Wednesday on a night when rookie goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma caught the eye for Sinisa Mihajlovic's men.

Former Genoa defender Antonelli produced an excellent low finish that keeps Milan in the top half, but the hosts were also grateful for a promising display from Donnarumma.

Mihajlovic kept faith with the 16-year-old, who was handed his debut in Sunday's 2-1 win over Sassuolo, and the youngster rewarded the Milan coach by producing a number of fine saves.

Donnarumma excellently denied Sergio Pellissier just before the interval before keeping out Alberto Paloschi's effort from point-blank range after the home side had edged ahead courtesy of Antonelli.

Defeat for Chievo was their third in a row in Serie A.

Milan have not lost against Chievo in almost 10 years and, predictably, began on the front foot.

Despite losing Ignazio Abate through injury in the early stages, the hosts came close after 22 minutes as Alessio Cerci sent in a dangerous cross that Andrea Bertolacci headed over.

Carlos Bacca two minutes later raced down the right channel, but was squeezed out and his shot was blocked behind for a corner.

A well-timed run from Cerci helped him beat the offside trap as Mattia De Sciglio slotted him in, but the midfielder's left-footed effort curled just the wrong side of the post.

The pair linked up well again three minutes before half-time as De Sciglio fired in an inviting cross and Cerci was unable to prevent his header from ballooning over.

Milan then had Donnarumma to thank for keeping the scores level as he made an excellent save just prior to the interval.

Chievo's Sergio Pellissier rose highest to nod Valter Birsa's free-kick goalwards, only for Donnarumma to pull off a quality stop to tip the ball over.

Donnarumma's opposite number Albano Bizzarri pulled off a brilliant save of his own five minutes after the break as he flicked Juraj Kucka's effort over.

However, the 37-year-old was helpless to prevent Milan scoring the opener two minutes later, Antonelli unleashing a superb low curling effort that found the bottom corner.

The left-back had received the ball from Bacca, whose excellent turn in the box provided him with enough space to pick out the pin-point finish.

Kucka could have put Milan further ahead after 66 minutes, although he snatched at the chance from the edge of the penalty area and pulled his effort wide of the upright.

Donnarumma was immediately called into action at the other end as Chievo threatened to equalise via a quick counter-attack.

Alberto Paloschi raced into the danger area, but the imposing figure of Donnarumma stood up to the attacker's effort by blocking it behind for a corner.

Kucka wasted another glorious chance a minute before full-time as he headed a corner agonisingly wide after Bizzarri had come flying out of his goal.

Liverpool 1-0 Bournemouth: Clyne goal gifts Klopp first win

    nathanielclyne-cropped_1jgxsournvu9210g5uxc6jppq6.jpg

Jurgen Klopp finally registered his first win as Liverpool manager in a 1-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth in the League Cup fourth round.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss saw his side held to a draw in each of his first three matches in the Anfield hot seat but can now celebrate moving a step closer to a first piece of silverware.

With Chelsea and Arsenal having crashed out of the competition on Tuesday, Klopp may see a path to the final opening up, and it was Nathaniel Clyne's first Liverpool goal that secured victory at Anfield on Wednesday.

The full-back was on hand to apply the finish after Joao Carlos Teixeira had seen the cheekiest of efforts cleared off the line in the 17th minute.

All of Bournemouth's best chances fell to Junior Stanislas, who was unable to make any of them count as the visitors suffered a repeat of their 1-0 Premier League defeat at Anfield earlier in the season.

Klopp handed full debuts to Teixeira, Connor Randall and Cameron Brannagan as he made nine changes, while opposite number Eddie Howe brought in six new faces in a bid to pull off an upset that would have provided the perfect tonic following back-to-back 5-1 defeats in the Premier League.

Roberto Firmino sent the ball trickling wide of the Bournemouth goal in the opening 30 seconds, before Stanislas squandered a golden opportunity to break the deadlock at the other end.

The former West Ham forward was sent clean through on goal but was unable to find a way past Liverpool goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, and Firmino very nearly punished that wasted chance, with Adam Federici touching over the Brazil international's dipping 20-yard strike.
But it was not long before the hosts opened the scoring. Teixeira saw an audacious flick cleared off the line by Adam Smith, but Clyne – one of the two players to keep their place in the Liverpool starting XI – made no mistake with the follow-up.

Goalkeeper Federici will not be in a hurry to view a replay – the Australian gave up on his hopes of reaching the ball after being beaten by Teixeira's backheel, but might have stood a slim chance of making the save from Clyne had he remained alert to the developing situation.

Stanislas then saw a close-range header punched over by Bogdan as Bournemouth chased an immediate response, before Liverpool lost stand-in captain Kolo Toure to a hamstring injury, joining the likes of Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Jordan Henderson in what is becoming a crowded Anfield treatment room.

Stanislas continued to look the most likely source of a Bournemouth goal and stung the palms of Bogdan with a free-kick before the interval, and Shaun MacDonald headed wide when play resumed.

Firmino failed to punish a defensive lapse when he dragged just wide shortly before the hour mark and, although Lucas Leiva and Teixeira saw late efforts kept out by Federici, Liverpool's progression rarely looked in doubt during the second half - Matt Ritchie coming closest for the visitors when he drew a save from Bogdan in stoppage time.
