:love:De Gea: I'm happy again at Manchester United after Madrid transfer collapse

    daviddegea-cropped_1hw3cwxnsi2ae19bfgewocxb0t.jpg

David de Gea is loving life at Manchester United again after putting the transfer saga involving Real Madrid firmly behind him.

The Spain goalkeeper was primed to complete a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, but the deal fell through on deadline day after the paperwork was not submitted in time.

De Gea was dropped by United boss Louis Van Gaal while the speculation over his future remained unclear, but after signing a new four-year contract on September 11 has since re-established himself as number one at Old Trafford.

"I felt in that moment that to extend my contract was the best thing to do," he told ESPN. "I'm really happy now, at one of the biggest clubs in the world, where I feel loved by the fans.

"Nobody let me down or disappointed me – these are things that happen. You must look forward and I am very happy now.

"During the [transfer] market anything can happen, it can all change inside a minute. Football is like that. There were difficult moments, strange moments, but they help you to mature. To be stronger.
And De Gea paid tribute to the United fans for welcoming back despite the drama around his future.

He added: "The first game I returned, after all that had happened, was impressive.

"The way Old Trafford received me, it made the hairs stand up. It's very difficult to describe what that day was like. I really appreciated it."

:yes:Robben: Depay will succeed at Manchester United

Arjen Robben has backed fellow Netherlands international Memphis Depay to succeed at Manchester United despite a difficult start to life at Old Trafford.

The young winger has struggled since joining the club from PSV and also been accused of not being a team player by Oranje boss Danny Blind.

The 21-year-old has even lost his starting berth under compatriot Louis van Gaal, but Robben has little doubt Depay will eventually come good.

"Memphis is a great talent," Robben said.

"I am convinced he will settle at Manchester United."
The Bayern Munich star also spoke of his anguish at having been part of the Dutch side that failed to qualify for Euro 2016, citing Friday's friendly against Wales as a chance to begin the road to recovery under Danny Blind.

"It is painful that we will not be at next year's Euros," he added.

"The game against Wales is a chance to start rebuilding. That is why I really wanted to be here and be part of the new project.

"We now have to start preparing for the 2018 World Cup qualification."

Ronaldo: Messi will win the Ballon d’Or this year

    cristiano-ronaldo-and-lionel-messi_gz0b8myqf60q18h72julv2eac.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted he thinks Lionel Messi will win the 2015 Ballon d’Or but is confident he can win the accolade again in the future.

The Real Madrid star has won the Ballon d’Or for the last two years but feels Messi, who won the treble with Barcelona last season, is the favourite to win the award this time around.

"This kind of trophy depends on votes and Messi won competitions," Ronaldo told ITV. "He won the Champions League and La Liga.

"In terms of individual [performances] I probably did the best season of my career, which is good. I was the highest scorer in Europe.

"We share this stage at Fifa for eight years. No-one did that in the past, only us. So it's good, I have a good relationship with him. We are not old friends but we respect each other.'

However, Ronaldo is confident he can win the title again in the future and says he expects to keep playing at the top level for many more years.

"Well I’m still young, I think… I think I can [win another Ballon d’Or]," he added.

"I want to play six, seven years more and I think I’m still able to win collective things because if you don’t win collective things, you cannot win individual awards."

Rooney: I'm facing 'huge challenge' to retain my England place

    wayne-rooney_13dhnhy7c9oqo18bwpf8m4dlpr.jpg

England captain Wayne Rooney says he faces a "huge challenge" to remain his country's first-choice striker after being left out of the team for Friday's friendly against Spain.

The 30-year-old, who recently overtook Bobby Charlton to become the Three Lions' all-time top goalscorer on 49 goals, will be replaced by Harry Kane.

England boss Roy Hodgson has insisted the change is purely to experiment with his attacking options, though Rooney has acknowledged he is no longer a guaranteed starter.

He said: “If the manager needs to have a look to see what he can do at international level, you have to understand that.

"It’s a huge challenge to keep your place in the team and that’s what I want to do. I want to prove myself.

"I feel that since Roy has been in charge, my international form has been great, I have scored a lot of goals and I hope that will continue.

“As a footballer you want to play. But then I have to understand I have played a lot of games for England and players like Jamie Vardy have come in and done well.

"It’s certainly the best group of strikers since I’ve been involved in the squad.
"We’ve also got players such as Danny Welbeck, Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott out injured so it’s a huge array of talent and great for the country.

"In previous years we’ve gone into tournaments and haven’t had that many match-winners in the squad. Now we’ve got quite a few match-winners, which can only benefit us as a team.”

Ronaldo: I have a few women

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-premier-league_6r8dv56lbglo1w1h433rc1m9c.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that he does not have a girlfriend at the moment as there are "a few" women competing for his affection.

The Real Madrid superstar split with long-term girlfriend Irina Shayk earlier this year and has been linked with a host of beauties since.

Indeed, Ronaldo has admitted he has yet to decide which lucky lady will become his next girlfriend and says it's hard finding a girl who isn't interested in just his fame.

When asked by ITV whether he has a "new special someone", the Portugal ace replied: "A few. I have to figure it out. Some know [they are competing]. I am normal.

"To speak seriously, it is not easy. I know 50 per cent [of the women] approach just for [celebrity] interest... It's normal, not just me. All the famous people have these kind of problems."But I think I am a confident guy. I'm tall, have all my teeth, have a nice body."

Ronaldo began dating Shayk in 2010 but they endured an acrimonious split in January, with the Russian model insinuating in June that the Ballon d'Or holder had not been "faithful".

Chile 1-1 Colombia: James nets equaliser after Vidal opener

    arturovidal-cropped_a7s17jlnuof71teg92ydeyt7q.jpg

Chile's 100 per cent record in World Cup qualifying came to an end after playing out a 1-1 with Colombia in Santiago.

Arturo Vidal opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time as he headed past David Ospina from close range before James Rodriguez netted a scruffy equaliser with 22 minutes remaining on Thursday.

The hosts had won their last seven matches before the draw as Colombia collected their fourth point from three games in a mixed qualifying campaign in South America.

Chile dominated the early proceedings with superior ball possession in the opposition half.

Jorge Sampaoli's side, who lifted their first Copa America title in July, looked composed at Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos as they prevented Colombia to counter attacks.

Alexis Sanchez was the first to test the reflexes of Ospina with a floated effort from outside the area within the opening minute.

Luis Muriel's pace began to cause Chile's high defensive line problems, and it was through the Sampdoria forward that Colombia created their best opening of the half.

Muriel charged to the byline before drawing the ball back to star midfielder Rodriguez to fire a fizzing effort across goal which Claudio Bravo was forced to tip over the crossbar.

Chile, orchestrated by Al-Wahda playmaker Jorge Valdivia, continued to press with their intricate passing around the 18-yard box but Jeison Murillo and Christian Zapata kept Sanchez and Eduardo Vargas at an arm's length with some tight marking.

Chile wasted multiple opportunities with poor set-piece delivery, causing Sampaoli to rise from his seat and become animated on the sidelines.
With half an hour played in Santiago, Sanchez found space from the edge of the box but the Arsenal forward could only drag his weak effort wide of the goal.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Chile took the lead.

Matias Fernandez's curled free-kick into the area was met by Vidal, who rose highest from six-yards out to crash his header into the bottom corner past the helpless Ospina.

The hosts returned to the field following the interval as the dominant side once more with Sanchez and Fernandez both testing Ospina from free-kicks as Colombia consistently gave away fouls in dangerous areas.

Colombia, spearheaded by Atletico Madrid striker Jackson Martinez, appeared more concerned with denying the Chile frontline than creating openings and spurned the limited chances they did create.

Rodriguez twice opted to shoot from ambitious distances and Muriel refused to pass to his unmarked strike partner Martinez on the break despite heavy pressure.

However, with 68 minutes played Colombia finally did take their chance as Rodriguez found the back of the net.

Muriel darted past Mauricio Isla down the left of the area and stuck and powerful close-range effort which rebounded off Bravo and towards the penalty spot, and Rodriguez did well to strike a low effort into the far corner of the net.

The equalising goal opened the contest, with Colombia sensing they could snatch all three points from the clash and Chile eager to press for a second.

A smart training ground routine from a corner eventually saw Sanchez – who had been kept quiet for the majority of the tie – strike over and Carlos Bacca, a late substitute for Muriel, saw his penalty appeal turned down.
Edwin Cardona struck a low drive late on but neither side were able to force a decisive winner and had to settle for a share of the points.

Origi hails Klopp arrival at Anfield

    divockorigi-cropped_16hu5q7dy1imh1alj2d7paow2n.jpg

Divock Origi has hailed the impact of Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, insisting he is enjoying the training methods of his new manager compared to former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

Origi was signed by Rodgers in July last year but was immediately sent back on loan to Lille and rarely featured during the Northern Irishman's spell in charge on Merseyside.

The Belgium striker has been handed a run of games in the first-team due to Liverpool's lengthy injury list and the athletic 20-year-old believes he is reaping the benefits of different techniques.

"Every trainer has his own way of managing and his own methods," Origi told the official Liverpool FC magazine.

"The thing I like is that he’s very direct and can show his plan and convince everybody with his ideas very quickly.

"That is the one thing that struck me from the start of his training sessions: he is very clear in his way of explaining and his vision."

Origi has been played as a centre forward this season, his preferred position, but with Klopp's desire to ultimately play with one sole attacker, the former is open to playing in any position.

"One of my qualities is that I am versatile so I can play as one of two strikers, three strikers, on the wing or upfront as the main forward," Origi added.

"When you are upfront you are closer to the goal and can potentially score more often so I would say I prefer this position.

"But I am young and I will play wherever the coach needs me. It was nice to see the change in tactics and I can adapt.

"I still have a lot of things that I can show to the fans here. One of my attributes is that I can carry the ball and take on defenders in one-on-ones with my pace."

Mata backs Costa to start scoring for Chelsea

    diego-costa-cropped_1x1gknpblmp8y1r4tfcic3nwc9.jpg

Manchester United star Juan Mata has backed international teammate Diego Costa to regain top form for club and country ahead of Spain's friendly against England on Friday.

Costa has struggled to replicate the form of his first season at Chelsea, with just three goals in 17 appearances in all competitions this term.

His struggles mirror those of his club, currently 16th in the Premier League table.

Costa has also had to content with accusations his game is being affected by a tendancy to be over-aggressive but former Blues star Mata is confident the 27-year-old will soon be back among the goals.

"Right now we’re in the same team, Spain, and we want him to score goals. He’s not in the best moment right now as he’s not scoring as many as last season but I’m sure he’ll soon start to score for Chelsea and for us as he’s not forgotten how to," Mata told a press conference.

Meanwhile, another of Costa's international teammates Koke, who played with the Brazilian-born striker at Atletico Madrid, believes his former team-mate just requires time.

Koke said: "He’s really happy to play for Spain and we only need to be patient with him and he’ll get the luck he’s been missing this season."

Spain will come up against an England side that qualified for next summer's European Championship finals with a 100 per cent record and Mata is expecting a difficult evening against Roy Hodgson's men in Alicante.

He added: "England have got a great squad with a lot of confidence. I talked to Wayne [Rooney] the other day and he is very happy with how they are playing. It will be a tough game for us and for them and they’ll be a tough rival in the Euros."

Spain endured a miserable World Cup in Brazil last summer, exiting the tournament at the group stage, but Koke believes they are now on the right track.

He said: "It’s different because gone are the players who won everything and in have come some younger players. There’s been a generational change but now it’s up to us to try and win everything too.

"We’re going to continue improving and hopefully win."

Rooney: Costa was my Player of the Year

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united_51pntjf4ja5a17nipoc9fdl13.jpg

Wayne Rooney has revealed he voted for Chelsea striker Diego Costa to win the PFA Players' Player of the Year award last season.

Costa scored 20 goals in all competitions for the Blues in his first season in England, but also courted controversy for his confrontational style.

The 27-year-old was criticised again after his battle with Ryan Shawcross in Chelsea's 1-0 defeat to the Potters last weekend.

But, with Costa set to line up against England on Friday, Rooney has spoken of his admiration for the former Atletico Madrid star.
"I actually voted for Costa as player of the year last season because I thought he was a huge player for Chelsea," said the Manchester United and Three Lions captain.
"I strongly believe that’s why they became champions.

"Obviously it hasn’t gone as well for him as it did last season but I think he is a fantastic player.

"He’s a fighter. That’s part of his game and it’s going to be very difficult for anyone to ask him not to do that. I feel that’s in him – that fight.

"He thrives on that and that gets his team-mates going as well.”

Rooney has been left out of Roy Hodgson's side to face reigning European champions Spain as the Three Lions boss bids to experiment. with his attacking options.

Rooney will bounce back, says Xavi

    waynerooney-cropped_1763n774ehwj71sxeiw9b8q2zx.jpg

Former Spain and Barcelona midfielder Xavi is confident embattled Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney will return to his goalscoring best.

Rooney's ability to produce at the highest level has been questioned this season amid his measly return of just two Premier League goals in 11 matches.

The England skipper has scored four goals in five European matches this term but has looked a shadow of his former self at club level under manager Louis van Gaal.
Xavi, however, believes the 30-year-old will get back on track, pointing to ex-Barca team-mate Andres Iniesta as an example."Footballers go through stages when things don't go well, it might be a few months, look at Iniesta last season," Xavi told ESPN FC.

"People were critical of him; they said he wasn't the same player. What happened in the Champions League final, the biggest game? He was fantastic."But if you score an important goal then your confidence can soar. Confidence is the greatest variable in life, not just in football.

"[Rooney] scored an important goal [against CSKA Moscow]. He'll be back."

Fabregas: Spain 'obsessed' with being champions

    cesc-fabregas-spain_djllp3kyq8ir1tpo9qkkwn5qy.jpg

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas says Spain remain "obsessed" by winning trophies as they prepare to put their Euro 2016 credentials to the test against England on Friday.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed plenty of success with La Roja, having been part of the sides that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and then defended their continental crown in 2012.

And although disappointment followed in the form of a first-round exit at Brazil 2014, Fabregas is still going strong with his national team and recently reached 100 caps, while he has worn the No.10 shirt more than any other player in the country's history.

Speaking to Goal at Spain's training base in Madrid, he said: "It's an important number but it's no more than that. All the players have a very high level and we all have our own individual moments.

"It is up to each one to show their level when they go out on the pitch and the coach has succeeded in forming a great group."

That group will now aim to win a third successive European Championship in France next summer and Fabregas says the players are as hungry as ever.

"All of us that are here have that winning mentality," he said. "And we are obsessed about being champions. It is that unity that makes us stronger."

A decade on from his international debut, the Catalan midfielder has seen many players come and go in Spain's squads, but claims the relationship within the group is still special.

"The sense of unity has been growing continually," he said. "From the day of my debut only Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos are left. Everything has changed a lot but the feeling among the group and the friendship that exists between the veterans and the youngsters has always been fantastic.

"We understand each other very well and we maintain that philosophy of helping each other."

On Friday, Fabregas faces Chelsea team-mate Gary Cahill and many of his Premier League adversaries as Spain take on England in Alicante, where the Three Lions are likely to be supported by a large ex-pat community.

Roy Hodgson's side sailed through qualification with a flawless record and Cesc is sure Spain will need to be at their best to beat the Three Lions.

"England are a team that always has very high expectations, wherever they go," he said. "They have had a perfect qualification phase this time and they are a very competitive national team.

"If we want to win, we will have to show our best level and fight until the end."

    Mata backs under-fire Rooney

    juanmatawaynerooney-cropped_14uix2g7s55qf17xb19vwiuvar.jpg

Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney has been backed to remain a key player for club and country by team-mate Juan Mata.

Despite becoming England's leading goalscorer this season and moving joint second in United's scoring charts, some of Rooney's club displays have led to criticism and calls for him to be dropped by Roy Hodgson.

As England prepare to face Spain in a friendly on Friday, which Rooney will be rested for, Mata called for the 30-year-old to be given more respect for his achievements.

"When we speak about Wayne we're speaking about the captain of England and my team Manchester United," the Spain international told a press conference.

"He's a very important player. He's scored more goals than anyone in the English national team and at United.

"I know he can play in different positions. At the end it's Roy Hodgson or Louis van Gaal who decides, but obviously if he's close to the box he will score more.

"I feel very proud to play alongside him in my team and it will be very difficult to face him."

Rooney's displays have led to suggestions his place could be under threat ahead of Euro 2016, the England skipper acknowledging this week he faces a "huge challenge" to keep his place.

With Hodgson set to field an experimental side in Alicante on Friday, Mata feels England have the quality to be a success in France next year.

"This team of England has a great squad and above all confidence," he added.

"I speak with Wayne day to day in Manchester and I see him very happy with the youth, ambition and I think they have the capacity to win a trophy.

"It's a great test for us because I consider them a big rival to win the Euros."

Conte envious of Belgium talent pool

    antonioconte-cropped_zvd1kxasfqly1twjmsz1bkvya.jpg

Italy head-coach Antonio Conte has admitted his country are well behind Belgium when it comes to producing quality young players.

As part of their preparations for Euro 2016, the two sides meet in Brussels on Friday with both having won their final four qualifiers to seal progress to next summer's tournament in France.

Belgium's recent rise has seen them climb to number one in the FIFA world rankings – an ascent aided by the emergence of the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne.

And Conte, for whom experienced players such as Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Pirlo form the backbone of his regular starting XI, is in admiration at the strides Belgium have made.

"I expect a great game against one of the favourites to win Euro 2016," he said.

"They deserve credit for producing young stars and we should envy the way they have achieved it.

"They are a team with a clear identity, plus they have players who can win games by themselves with an individual bit of skill.

"I think Belgium have everything it takes to do well in the future.

"Anderlecht and Standard Liege put their academies at the disposal of the Federation. That couldn't happen in Italy. We're a long way off from them in that respect.

"The Azzurri will be fired up [for this match] and so it'll be a friendly in name only."

:love::love:I love Manchester United - Ronaldo

    cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_9jo7aurofe3n1w09mc0ldet5s.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has reiterated his deep affection for Manchester United and says he wants to finish his career 'at the top level'.

The Real Madrid forward, who spent six trophy-laden seasons at Old Trafford before joining Los Blancos in a then world record £80 million deal, has been coy on his future amid continued reports of a potential move to Paris Saint-Germain or a return to United.

The Portuguese recently described his 'passion' for United and respect for former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson but, speaking this week, he again refused to give a decisive answer on his future, simply saying that he wants to finish his career at the 'top level'.

“As people know, I like Manchester United. I love that club. In my mind, I want to finish at the top level. I want to finish with dignity," Ronaldo told ITV.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, has looked to end the speculation by insisting his client will finish his playing days at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"[Cristiano will] end his career at Real Madrid," Mendes was quoted as saying by Marca.

"He loves Manchester United and Real Madrid, but his career will end in Madrid."

Ronaldo's contract with Real Madrid runs until 2018.

Wenger can stay at Arsenal as long as he wants, says Ljungberg

    arsene-wenger-champions-league-bayern-v-arsenal_or6i8kmqr5g1h4tfydpjhez3.jpg

Former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg believes Arsene Wenger deserves the chance to step down from the manager's job whenever he feels the time is right.

Wenger was appointed at Arsenal in 1996, arriving in the Premier League as a largely unknown quantity following previous spells in charge of Monaco and Nagoya Grampus Eight.

The Frenchman has had a significant impact in British football over the intervening 19 years, revolutionising Arsenal's approach to diet and fitness, as well as the club's style of play.

And Ljungberg, who spent nine years under Wenger - winning two Premier League titles and three FA Cups, as well as reaching the Champions League final in 2006 - says his former manager can be proud of his legacy.

"It's all up to him, how long he wants to stay at the club," the Grassroot Soccer ambassador and former Sweden international told Omnisport.

"He's been there a long time but he's built how they play today, the style and the culture.

"It's what everyone talks about around the world, that's what people remember from Arsenal at the moment.

"So I think what he's done, whenever he wants to retire he can retire.

"He has a contract, he never breaks it, so at least that we know."

Ljungberg was speaking at a Grassroot Soccer charity event to mark World AIDS Day, which was also attended by former Arsenal colleague Robert Pires.

The funds raised by the players will be spent on a range of unique sports-based partnerships in 50 countries around the world, including a community project in South Africa and Voluntary HIV Counselling and Testing tournaments in Zimbabwe.
